Just last Thursday we watched events surrounding the 80th Anniversary of D-Day in Normandy, France. I couldn't help but think of the movie Saving Private Ryan starring Tom Hanks released back in 1998. Many veterans extol the movie for its accurate depiction of the storming of Omaha Beach. It wasn't pretty.

I realize there are some bad mothers out there, and this day evokes anything but happiness for some. But I had a different experience. I was blessed with a Mom who is the equivalent of an angel. I get what author Mitch Albom says in his book For One More Day: "I realized when you look at your mother, you are looking at the purest love you will ever know."

Of all the historical heirlooms on display from country greats like Johnny Cash, Merle Haggard, Dolly Parton, Loretta Lynn and a myriad of others, my favorite featured an artist who at one time was considered bad for country music. You may have heard of him. His name is Elvis.

One of my favorite Christmas stories is A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens. This classic has endured the times as it was first published in London back in 1843. I've read the book and watched most of the movie versions that tell the story of Ebenezer Scrooge. I never tire of the story nor its message.

This week the unthinkable happened in Nashville, Tennessee. A shooter entered a small private school and took the lives of three 9-year-old children and three adults in their 60's. This senseless, tragic act has left us trying to process what just happened. This morning I want to take you inside me in my own personal struggle to understand. I watched a video of a kindergarten teacher reading a book entitled We Are All Alike. We Are All Different. The illustrated children's book talked about how all children are alike and yet very different. For example, We all have skin, but not the same color. We all like to eat, but we don't like the same foods. We all like to play, but not in the same way. The lesson, of course, is that we're both alike and different, and that's OK. Remember the American folktale of The Little Engine That Could? A long line of cars had the daunting challenge of making it up a steep hill, and needed an engine to pull it. A large engine was approached but it said, "I can't. That's too much of a pull for me." Other engines were approached, but they always provided an excuse for why they couldn't. Finally, a little engine was asked, and it said, "I think I can." With determination, it kept repeating "I-think-I can, I-think-I-can..." all the way up and over the hill. It's been a long-time favorite to teach children a can-do optimism and perseverance can make hard things possible.

Several years ago I was at a used book store and ran across a set of books titled Readers Digest Teen-Age Treasury. I wasn't put off by the term "teen-age" suggesting they were for a younger audience. I stood there in the store and read a couple of the stories. I was sold. I took the set home with me and I've read and re-read its stories through all the ensuing years..
