There is a lot doctors and scientists still don’t fully understand about what includes labour, both pre and at term. But we do know that there are treatments that can reduce your chance of having a preterm birth, especially if you have had one in the past.
Preterm birth can be especially traumatic for those living in remote communities which is why in our guests on today’s podcast, Drs. Kirsten Duckitt and Jennifer Kask, developed a prevention of preterm birth pathway in Northern Vancouver Island that is spreading to other remote communities. They share with us a moving story of a pregnant individual from a remote community who had her baby in their hospital, and break down the definitions and rates of preterm birth, risks to mama and baby, and how they can be decreased.

Why do we even bother with car seats? Motor vehicle collisions are the leading cause of preventable death in children ages one through nine in Canada. Driving is one of the most dangerous things that we do, and most of us do it on a daily basis with our children in the mix. The good news is, child safety seats have been shown to reduce fatal injury by 71% for infants under 1 year, 54% for toddlers ages 1-4 years, and 45% for children ages 4-8 years - but they are only effective if used properly, and studies have shown that up to 90% of child restraints are installed or used improperly!
Sean Linnenbruegger is the owner of Safe Seats, a Nationally CPSAC-Certified Child Passenger Safety Technician-Instructor (CPST-I), and the proud mum of two very busy boys, ages 6 and 10. Tune into today’s podcast with Sean and Dr. Alicia as they discuss many tips in detail, providing you with the skills and confidence to install and use your seats properly 100% of the time, and the peace of mind that you’re doing everything you can to keep your children as safe as possible in their car seat!

What do a pregnant person and an athlete have in common? A lot, according to perinatal therapist, athlete, and mama herself, Janette Yee!
Janette, who has a deep background in sports orthopedics and high-level rugby, shares her expertise on treating cesarean recovery akin to a season-ending - but not career ending - sports injury. She talks with Dr. Alicia about the importance of preparing mentally, physically, and your community for the chance (or certainty) of having a C-Section, including the importance of pre-surgery strength, mind preparation, realistic birth expectations, and building a supportive team.
A super helpful part of the process is seeing a physiotherapist, but that can often be prohibitively expensive and difficult to make the time for in the hectic period that is postpartum. Taking an online course like Janette's Cesarean Recovery Stage 1: Your Prenatal C-Section Preparation & Recovery Program is a fantastic, affordable, and accessible way to take recovery into your own hands, for just five minutes a day!

Could your eyesight worsen? Or can it improve? What effects does breastfeeding have?

You probably know about postpartum depression, but did you know that postpartum anxiety and postpartum rage are just as common - and much less talked about? Sadly, many mothers struggling with mental health issues don’t reach out for help with the fear that medication (in conjunction with very costly therapy) is the only solution. But this is not the only solution, nor necessarily the most effective one.
Andrea Niles, founder of Prospera Mental Health and Wellness, is a clinical psychologist who dedicated her career to studying treatments for anxiety and depression. She stepped outside academia into the world of digital mental health wanting to make a more direct impact. Being a mom herself going through her own challenges, she realized there was a marked lack of resources out there for mom with effective treatments and interventions for anxiety and depression - and let’s not forget rage - and thus a company was born!
On today’s episode we break-down the differences between PPA/PPD and postpartum rage, outline symptoms, and offer very real, effective solutions. Be sure to download this Free Postpartum Mental Health Guide, providing strategies and exercises to avoid common pitfalls and preserve your mental health. If you are a new or expectant parent, or relate to any of these feelings, today’s episode is not to be missed!
On today’s episode, Drs. Sarah and Alicia get down to brass-tacks on one topic you may not know is a routine part of newborn care - the Vitamin K shot. What is Vitamin K and why do newborn babies need it? Drs. Sarah and Alicia address this and so much more in this quick yet informative episode, including dispelling common myths that you’ll want to know more about.
If you’d like to learn more about this and many other essential parts of routine pregnancy, postpartum and newborn care, be sure to check out our low-cost Pregnancy to Parenthood Online Prenatal Masterclass, taking you from anxious and overwhelmed to confident during your childbirth experience!
“It’s mommy’s turn to wine! It’s cheaper than therapy!” Why is alcohol the only drug we need to explain not using? It's the cheapest, most popular, and widely available drug for adults in North America, and moreover using it is normalized over declining it, and is often wrapped up in a culture of necessity and as a healthy coping m echanism for moms. But what if we have more to gain than to lose by numbing out the hard parts of parenting?
Celeste Yvonne, Recovery Coach, author, mom, and advocate asked herself this exact question, which set her on a journey of sober curiosity, sobriety, and ultimately advocacy of the lifestyle. We are so grateful to have her share her story and experience on today’s podcast, as well as advice on how to begin the journey yourself, even if it is just asking questions around our individual and societal relationships with alcohol.
If you are sober curious and you’d like to dive a little deeper, consider buying Celeste’s newly released book It's Not about the Wine: The Loaded Truth behind Mommy Wine Culture, contacting her for coaching, or joining the Sober Mom Squad!

Alicia and Sarah outline today, with a particular emphasis on epidurals as we get frequent questions about them! As always, having a good understanding of your options is crucial in making decisions that feel right for you, even when sometimes things don’t go according to plan. About one in three births are delivered by Cesarean Section, though this varies by province, country, and even community. About half of those are planned, also called “elective,” while the other half are emergency, or unplanned. Keep in mind that the term “emergency cesarean” is used to mean that delivery via cesarean section was not a birth preference, but does not always mean a true medical emergency which has to be performed as quickly as humanly possible. Join Drs. Sarah and Alicia as they share with us the top reasons Cesarean Sections are performed, both elective and planned. For additional info, check out our episode on What is Placenta Previa?

If you’ve just come from a pediatric check-up and you’re worried your baby is small and needs to gain weight, please don’t panic! It’s important to consider that if your baby falls into a low percentile, is this a new occurrence, or have they always been on the smaller side? Are they not meeting other developmental milestones, or are they following along their own growth curve?
It is only natural that some babies will land in a lower percentile, and that is not a cause for concern. However, once they are developmentally ready to start solids, there are certain ways food can be fortified to aid in caloric intake and growth! Jessica Penner, Registered Dietician and co-founder of Happy Health Eaters, shares with us her top 5 tips for starting solids with smaller babies!

The Canadian and American healthcare systems are frequently compared, from either side of the border, with Canada’s often lauded as superior largely due to its publicly funded nature. But that doesn’t mean that there isn’t a lot to learn from other healthcare models around the world. One area where the US can be considered a leader in comparison is the increasing growth of Birth Centers accessible around the states. But you may be wondering - what even is a Birth Center and who is it for?
Join us on today’s episode as Dr. Sarah chats with certified nurse midwife Sarah Stetina, and Director of Midwifery at the Burr Ridge Birth Center in Burr Ridge, Illinois. They discuss the different practices that have led to the emergence of Birth Centers and philosophies around providing the best maternity care, for patients such as yourself!

Today’s episode talks about returning to running after a Cesarean birth - but don’t be fooled by this seemingly narrow focus. The episode is chock-full of essential information about pelvic floors, scar tissue, and exercise that is useful for those pregnant, not pregnant, non-runners, and several years postpartum alike! Dr. Sarah herself learns a lot from Diane Rizzardo, a registered physiotherapist and founder of Elevate Pilates & Physio, about the essential steps to returning to activity after pregnancy and birth to lower the risk of injury, and ensure maximum benefit from exercise both mentally and physically, as your body recovers from the musculoskeletal injury of giving birth. Diane also shares with us the essential checklist of functional exercises you should be able to perform before returning to running - tune in and try them out for yourself!

Tongue ties are such a vast, controversial, and often misunderstood topic that we brought in pediatric otolaryngologist (ENT) surgeon Dr. Elise Graham to help us wade through the topic. She is also a mom to two boys with a complex breastfeeding journey of her own, which has brought her to shine a postpartum lens onto her field that she admits can gain from providing more support to patients, especially as information about tongue ties can vary greatly and specialized support can be hard to find. In addition to being a pediatric surgeon, Dr. Graham is also working towards becoming a certified lactation consultant (IBCLC) and earning a fellowship through the Academy of Breastfeeding Medicine, which is why we’re very excited to have her guide us through the evidence-based truth about tongue ties! * Academy of Breastfeeding Medicine Protocols: https://www.bfmed.org/protocols * JAMA Otolaryngology - Head & Neck Surgery: What Is a Tongue Tie? * IG: Dr. Elise Graham @elisegmd

Fertility. The fact of the matter is that humans are not that great at reproduction!
