We may only be one person but through compassion, inquisition, and developing a deeper understanding of the world, people, and culture around us, together, we can create change. How We’ll Live is a show designed to spark curiosity, learn new things, and inspire hidden passion. Each week, the host Hailey shares conversations with thought-leaders & creators whose innovative work, ideas & products are igniting change, challenging the status quo, and shifting existing thought patterns for a better now and greater tomorrow. They’ll discuss our health, the environment, culture, society, and how together we can make the world better and our experiences happier.
This is a week when I’d usually share a solo episode but I had a conversation that I just couldn’t wait to let out because it’s with my friend Michelle. Michelle and I know each other through our boyfriends who happen to live in the same building.
A few weeks ago, I was scrolling through Tik Tok and came across a post from my friend Michelle. Michelle usually shares fun TikTok’s of her boyfriend Jackson (sometimes without him knowing – like when he’s sleeping!) but this one was different.
In this one Michelle shared pictures of her life the past 6 months struggling with topical steroid withdrawal.
TSW is XYZ
I knew Michelle was going through something and that it was affecting her skin, but I had no idea the severity of it. I thought it was so incredibly brave and knew it would help so many people. I saw her a few hours later watching rugby with a group of friends and she told me it had gone viral with over 2 million views and people asking her questions and saying they were struggling too.
As we were chatting about it I realized I wanted to sit down with her to learn more and share her story with others. She was so excited (and nervous to share) but also really wanted to raise awareness about topical steroids and the potential impact that so many people are experiencing but we don’t know about.
When Michelle was 16 she went to the dermatologist to treat her eczema and left with a low potency topical steroid - very common for treating eczema. Over the next 10 years, the dose stopped working and she continued to get increased doses to the point where it was 650x the potency of hydrocortisone. 650! And then, it stopped working entirely and her body went into withdrawal.
For 4 months, she was in pain with bruising all over her body, itchy skin, couldn’t wash her hair or get into the shower without pain, and was emotionally withdrawn. She couldn’t leave her house and if you know Michelle, you know she is so social - always planning with friends and family.
During our chat we talk about:
Michelle and I both hope that this conversation raises awareness and any one who is using steroids understands the potential risks and advocates for their health.

In this solo episode, I’m talking about a few things I’m loving lately and the strategy I’ve been using to help me focus and create more space in my life.
In this episode I’m sitting down with Dr. Shannon Ritchey, physical therapist, fitness instructor, and owner of the online fitness platform, Evlo. founder of Evlo which has fitness classes and science-based workouts.
After years of studying biomechanics, muscle function, and neurology and seeing so many people in pain including herself, Shannon wanted a better way of workout that drives real results for people. She found a formula that helps her to not only feel stronger than ever, but to do it pain-free. This formula is simple: choose exercises and a structured plan that have the best band-for-your-buck, but that stresses joints the least.
As a chronic worker-outer, often overdoing it, I could relate to Shannon’s own story and felt inspired to take a rest day.
Shannon is officially my new best friend and I think she’ll feel like yours too after you listen to this conversation.
During the episode we chat about why going hard or doing the most isn’t always the right way to achieve results, why the fitness industry can be misleading, following the good feeling, tips for building strategic workout routines (beginners and advanced), some of Shannon’s favorite nutrition recommendations and her own workout, and life in general!
Enjoy!

Financial well-being plays a big role in our overall health and wellness but financial literacy is not something we’re taught very well in elementary school. But that’s what today’s guest is doing with her work...
Erin Skye Kelly is a bestselling and award-winning author, keynote speaker and entrepreneur. Her new book launches on July 20, 2021. “Get the Hell Out of Debt'' teaches financial literacy in a way that is approachable, entertaining and inspiring. Erin’s resources have helped thousands of people pay off millions of dollars in personal debt, and are inspired by her deeply personal journey of regaining financial freedom.
Though she is the former owner of a mortgage brokerage, Erin found herself with over $2 million of personal debt. Erin enlisted the help of financial professionals but grew frustrated when their debt consolidation and refinancing solutions only made the problem worse. Instead of paying off debt with debt, Erin set out on a mission to truly understand how money works. In “Get the Hell Out of Debt,” Erin recorded her findings and her financial advice, along with a healthy dose of love and laughter. Thousands of people have eradicated millions of dollars in debt because Erin Skye Kelly taught them how to get the hell out of it! Erin is a podcast host, educator, and leader who has created courses and workshops focused on financial empowerment. Erin is also a keynote speaker and has shared the stage with legendary motivational speakers such as Tony Robbins, Phil Town and Gary John Bishop.

I was introduced to today’s guest by a previous guest Paige Pichler who was on the show a couple years ago. You guys loved the episode with Paige, so I know you’ll love this one with Justine.
Justine Moore Sloan is a Health & Mindset Coach, author, speaker, and the Co-Founder of Boss Ladies MKE, a networking and mastermind group for women in the Greater Milwaukee Area.
Most recently she authored, Someone I Love Lives Here: A story about looking for love and acceptance in all the wrong places, and finally finding it within myself.
I help women connect to their self-worth, say YES to their desires, and ignite their inner badass!
Justine’s story is similar to many of ours...a journey with a lot of ups and downs on the way to finding what really matters and the people who can truly support us in getting there - most importantly our true selves.
During the episode we talk about:
I know we talk about the theme of self-love and compassion a lot here, but it’s important. Full stop. So often, we put others ahead of ourselves or move through life without noticing or reflecting what it is we need to feel good. We deserve to feel good and get the things we want out of life. But why would we get it if we don’t even feel like we deserve it!?
Understanding other people’s stories and knowing we’re not alone can help us all embrace a more compassionate way of being in the world.
I hope that understanding Justine’s journey helps you understand you and develop a bit more self-love for the person you see each day in the mirror.
Remember, as Justine says, “someone you love lives here”

His newest company, Temper, is making metabolic fitness accessible by making it easy to stick to an intermittent fasting plan and to give people more control over the most impactful behaviors in their life - when and what to eat.
His previous company focused on improving people's relationships with their phones and was featured in TIME, 20/20, and 60 Minutes. Check out his book Digital Behavioral Design to learn more about how to use technology to shape behavior.
I was introduced to Dalton him through one of my co-workers who knows that I’m a bit of a guinea pig for all things health and wellness.

This week, in the launch of Season 3. I’m talking to Dr. Jill Bolte Taylor who was introduced to me by last season’s guest, Dr. Jeffrey Rediger.
I loved this episode. It reminded me how much control we have over our lives - that we have agency to experience life how we want it and that by understanding how our brain works we can be even more empowered.
It reminded me of this quote from Marcus Aurelius - you have power over your mind, not outside events. Realize this, and you will find strength. It feels even more relevant in this time that we’re living in.
Dr. Taylor is a Harvard trained and published neuroanatomist. Her area of specialty was understanding how our brain creates our perception of reality by studying the differences between the postmortem brains of human individuals who were classified as either neuro-typical, with those diagnosed with severe mental illness. Ironically, in 1996 Dr. Taylor experienced a severe hemorrhage in the left hemisphere of her brain causing her to lose the ability to walk, talk, read, write, or recall any of her life. Her 2008 memoir, My Stroke of Insight, documented her experience with stroke and eight-year recovery and it spent 63 weeks on the New York Times nonfiction bestseller list.
She is an expert, both personally and professionally, about the neuroplasticity of our brain and our ability to not only recover from trauma, but about how we have the power to choose who and how we want to be in the world.
In 2008 Dr. Taylor gave the first TED talk that ever went viral on the Internet, which now has well over 27 million views. Also in 2008, Dr. Taylor was chosen as one of TIME Magazine's “100 Most Influential People in the World” and was the premiere guest on Oprah Winfrey’s “Soul Series” web-cast. Her new book WHOLE BRAIN LIVING: The Anatomy of Choice and the Four Characters That Drive Our Life blends neuroanatomy with psychology and teaches us how we can short-circuit our emotional reactivity and find our way to deep inner peace. Website: drjilltaylor.com.
We spend about half our conversation talking about her new book, the four characters, and how understanding each of our four characters can help us achieve inner peace, satisfaction in life, and even help us improve our relationships.
We also talk about...
Dr. Taylor’s energy is effervescent and vibrant. She is an inspiration and a model of what living well means.
As you listen to this conversation, try to apply the concepts and strategies to your own life. Is the an opportunity to create more spaciousness in your life so that you can be an observer allowing all parts of your brain work in harmony so that you can live with more meaning.

Today...we’re talking about how to take better care of the planet.
To be totally transparent, I don’t know as much as I would like about climate change or the details around the impact of my daily choices.
However, what I do know is that our small actions can make a difference, and we’re reaching a point where we all need to be taking action and playing our role.
Whether you choose to bring a reusable bag to the store, eliminate your use of single-use plastic like ziplock bags, replace your plastic tupperware with glass, reduce the amount of times you order takeout or buy plastic water bottles, eat less meat, shop second hand, your actions do add up and they do make a difference.
Some of the things that I do include, making an effort to recycle all of the items that can be recycled, shop in the bulk section of the grocery store, forgo plastic bags for my fruits and veggies at the grocery store, say no to the bag when I can, have a meatless day each week, and try to buy from brands who are making an effort to be sustainable. I turn my lights off and don’t leave my heat or AC on.
I am far from perfect, but I am trying to learn so I can make mindful actions when it comes to my choices.
And today’s guest taught me SO much to help inform these choices.
Lauren Gregor is Founder and CEO of Rent a Romper, a rental clothing company for children because they grow so fast. Prior to founding Rent-a-Romper, Lauren served as a strategy and operations leader at FirstGroup plc and Los Angeles Unified School District. She brings her experience in business and as a mom to her goal of making life easier for parents and the planet. Lauren lives in Los Angeles with her husband and two sons, Bennett and Avery.
I was so inspired by Lauren because I love people who are passionate about something and then do something about it. People who take action!
And yes, you heard that right, Not only does this week’s guest care about the planet and is doing something about it, she works full-time as director of Strategy at a Charter School Network oh, and she has a husband and two sons.
During our conversation we discuss:
Lauren inspired me to make better, small, daily choices AND to continue to take action on my passions, which can with a busy life fall by the wayside.

Stillness Is The Key
To say I was inspired by today’s guest would be an understatement…
When it comes to spontaneous healing, skepticism abounds. Doctors are taught that “miraculous” recoveries are flukes, and as a result they don’t study those cases or take them into account when treating patients.
Enter Dr. Jeff Rediger, who has spent over 15 years studying spontaneous healing, pioneering the use of scientific tools to investigate recoveries from incurable illnesses.
Maybe you guessed it already...I found today’s guest on goop, well the goop podcast, and I literally emailed him as I was listening because I knew I needed to talk to him myself.
His thoughtfulness and approach to wellness is right up our alley here on How We’ll Live and not to mention caring for our immune systems is pretty timely!
My favorite part though is pillar four...healing our identity and healing our soul -- a surprising connection to our physical health, which we talk about near the end of the episode.
Jeffrey Rediger, MD, MDiv, is on the faculty of Harvard Medical School, the Medical Director of McLean SE Adult Psychiatry and Community Affairs at McLean Hospital, and the Chief of Behavioral Medicine at Good Samaritan Medical Center.
A licensed physician and board-certified psychiatrist, he also has a Master of Divinity from Princeton Theological Seminary. His research with remarkable individuals who have recovered from illnesses considered incurable has been featured on the Oprah Winfrey and Dr. Oz Shows, among others.
He has been nominated for the National Bravewell Leadership Award, and has received numerous awards related to leadership and patient care.

I discovered today’s guest on one of my favorite sites...goop (obviously).
When I read that Michaela Boehm was GP and Brad’s intimacy coach, I knew I needed the inside scoop.
While no relationship is perfect, GP & Brad’s is definitely goals.
My conversation with Michaela helped me realize that you don’t achieve couple #goals without hard work and dedication.
Michaela is an expert in intimacy, relationships, and sexuatlity. She’s a speaker and counselor whose work centers around the intersection of intimacy and embodiment.
She has an extensive in-person counseling background, clinical experience in trauma and addiction and an innovative somatic approach.
Her work with celebrity couples has been featured in international print publications, TV programs and online talk shows. Most recently her approach has been featured on the Netflix Series [UN] WELL.
During our conversation, we talk about…
Michaela’s talks about traveling for work, her teaching partner, being known for having famous clients. And she explains the goal of her work at the intersection of embodiment, sexuality, and relationship.
Getting to the root cause of behavior patterns influenced by previous injury Michaela walks us through how she would treat someone she is working with, and gives examples how she must peel back layers of someone’s relationship in order to find the root issue
How behaviors in relationships are imprinted on us from our past relationships, and model relationships in your life. We often repeat the same behaviors we saw in relationships growing up.
The body has to be the instrument of perception. It gives signals that if you can become in tune with will help you connect with yourself as well as other people
Michaela recommends physical movement to help every aspect of your heath, and relationship. Being active and seeking out nature allows us to connect with our bodies, that then allows us to know, and communicate our wants and needs more appropriately.
Michaela shares advice on how to approach resolving communication issues. As well as how to keep communication skills strong.
That self-care is important for attaining a strong intimate relationship with yourself is not only important for you is also important in how you form relationships with others.
Michaela talks about her displeasure with the spread of misinformation about subjects she has experienced countless hours in the field of.

Dr. Michael Brues has found the perfect science to tell us how to schedule our lives for optimization through our chronotype and how we sleep -- like when to run, eat a cheeseburger, ask for a raise and even….when to have sex.
His book the Power of When presents a groundbreaking new program for getting back in sync with your natural rhythm by making minor changes to your daily routine including SLEEP.
Michael J. Breus, Ph.D., is a Clinical Psychologist and both a Diplomate of the American Board of Sleep Medicine and a Fellow of The American Academy of Sleep Medicine. He is one of only 168 psychologists in the world to have passed the Sleep Medical Speciality board without going to Medical School. Dr. Breus was recently named the Top Sleep Specialist in California by Reader’s Digest, and one of the 10 most influential people in sleep. Dr. Breus is on the clinical advisory board of The Dr. Oz Show and so much more.
During the episode we talk about:
The impact of 2020 stress ie presidential election and COVID have been negatively affecting the average American’s sleep schedule this past year
How you could wake up NATURALLY at the exact same time every day
That quantity of sleep is actually less important than quality of sleep and how your chronotype can tell you what you need
Finding the perfect time to have sex, eat a cheeseburger, go for a run and even ask for a raise by knowing your chronotype and improving your sleep
The fascinating study of sleep and how it’s a fairly new topic of research compared to other human behaviors
Treating sleep disorders through lifestyle changes before turning to medication and how to identify where to start for yourself
Of course we talk about exercises, supplements, and reputable supplement brands conducive to healthy living, and quality sleep
Bio individuality rearing its head again, there are no rules when it comes to sleep, or anything in our life. It’s all about reflecting upon yourself, listening to your body, your mind, and learning from past experience.

Today’s episode is with husband and wife duo Christopher Worth and Camila Soriano and founders of the new-to-market tequila seltzer.
You may not know this about me, but I’m a margarita girl but HATE how sugary they can be. I swear it’s the sugar that actually causes the hangover! So if you’re like me and love having a few drinks but don’t like to feel weighed down and heavy after and want to sip on something a bit cleaner this holiday season - this episode is for you!
I got a chance to try them this fall, and you’ll hear all about my favorite flavor during the episode.
I always love hearing how people get to where they are. There’s always a story and every journey looks different, but the one thing that they all have in common is following a passion and or an interest one step at a time. It’s kind of interesting how life unfolds...I mean Camilla used to work in finance!
But after successfully creating delicious mixers with the American Cocktail Co, the two set out on a journey to reimagine the RTD category and develop the first tequila seltzer made with organic juice and free of added sugars, natural flavorings, essences and corn syrup (unlike most other seltzers on the market). The result: Volley, the ready-to-go tequila beverage crafted with only three clean ingredients: 100% blue agave tequila, sparkling water and organic juice.
Another thing I love about Volley is their dedication to being a product for good - with outdoor sustainability and conservation near and dear to both Christopher and Camila’s hearts, Volley will also be hosting beach cleanups and outdoor educational events in partnership with Leave No Trace (LNT), a non-profit that provides resources so every person can protect + enjoy our natural world.
We chat about:
They share how their suspicion and displeasure with the current market for canned seltzer products inspired Volley - if we only knew what we were actually drinking
Some pretty shocking facts about the food industry when it comes to labeling
Camila talks about the book called ‘The Dorito Effect’ which began cluing her into the word natural, and how many food and beverage products use that word to disguise other ingredients like artificial flavors.
The challenges of creating an organically certified product and starting a business
The advantages of developing the product at home
What they’ve learned about running a business and being a good leader including advice on how to stay humble, accepting feedback - positive or negative, and the importance of asking questions and learning from people who are experienced in the fields you need help in.
Trusting each other as well as working together as a couple, and the advantages and challenges that come along with that.

Toni Marinucci is a Registered Dietitian with a mission to end the restrictive diet culture by providing simple strategies to help people commit to healthier living with scientific based evidence and real world application.
She recently just gave a TEDx talk and is working on her very first book where she discusses the parallels between dieting, dating, and romantic relationships, and how we treat them the same. This is a concept she would like to expose your listeners to among many other topics that you can choose from.
During our chat we talk about
Diet culture’s recent resurgence due to people generally feeling a lack of control and uncertainty in their lives during COVID-19.
How Toni helps her clients achieve “food freedom”
That there isn’t one specific way to eat healthy. Different food will make you feel different depending on who you are.
The amount of misinformation in the world of health is causing anxiety, and confusion for people surrounding their food choices - like the fact that people are touting fruit as bad!
How to achieve satisfaction
Toni’s amazing analogy fad dieting comparing to dating different versions of the same guy. You must look within yourself first to know what you like before you can find a good relationship with a person or the food you eat.
And that the process of finding what food makes you feel good is constant and never ending. Toni’s advice is to enjoy that process rather than being in a hurry to be at the end of it. As there is only progress and never an end result.

Today, I sit down with Dr. Ingrid Waldron - a fellow Canadian - to talk about her work on mental illness in black, indigenous, and other racialized communities in Nova Scotia, environmental racism, systemic racism, social determinants of health, her experiences with racism as a child and adult, and 3 things we can all do right now to make change.
Dr. Ingrid Waldron was born in Montreal. She is an Associate Professor in the Faculty of Health at Dalhousie University, the Director of the Environmental Noxiousness, Racial Inequities & Community Health Project (The ENRICH Project) and the Flagship Co-Lead of the Improving the Health of People of African Descent.
Her research, teaching, and community leadership and advocacy work are examining and addressing the health and mental health impacts of structural inequalities within the environment, public infrastructure, health and mental health care, and child welfare in Black, Indigenous, immigrant, and refugee communities.
The 2020 Netflix documentary There’s Something in the Water is based on Dr. Waldron’s book and was co-produced by Waldron, actress Ellen Page, Ian Daniel, and Julia Sanderson, and co-directed by Page and Daniel.
Her research also led to the creation of two private members bills for addressing environmental racism: the Nova Scotia bill An Act to Address Environmental Racism (Bill 111), which was introduced in the Nova Scotia Legislature in April 2015, and the federal bill A National Strategy to Redress Environmental Racism (Bill C-230), which was introduced in the House of Commons in February 2020.
Dr. Waldron is also conducting several studies on mental illness in Black, Indigenous and other racialized communities in Nova Scotia, focusing specifically on the mental health impacts of discrimination, stigma, and barriers to help-seeking. She is also collaborating with a team of researchers and community members to examine the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic in the African Nova Scotian community in the Prestons.
Finally, Dr. Waldron is currently developing the first national anti-environmental racism coalition with partner Naolo Charles, which will bring together partners from multiple sectors to address and advocate around environmental racism, climate change, health inequities, and other social justice issues in Canada.

When I heard Tal Ben Shahar on Arm Chair Expert I was introduced to the concept of positive psychology or - scientific study of what makes life most worth living”
It’s a scientific approach to studying human thoughts, feelings, and behavior, with a focus on strengths instead of weaknesses, building the good in life instead of repairing the bad, and taking the lives of average people up to “great” instead of focusing solely on moving those who are struggling up to “normal”.
What makes life worth living and building our quote unquote good life is going to look different for each of us...and I wanted to explore how we can get there so we can keep moving towards creating our definition of living well.
Many think that happiness, like success, comes from getting what they want. But new evidence from positive psychology suggests that happiness is something else, or at least something more.
Today’s guest reminded me that while external things can make us happy our happiness already exists within...we just have to get to know it...accept it...and fulfill it.

Today’s guest, Emily Hochman, is using technology to help people develop long-term healthier habits while ditching diets for good, discover how to eat well for their bodies, and feel good in their skin.
Emily Hochman is the 28-year old Founder and CEO of Wellory, the anti diet nutrition app on a mission to make personalized nutrition accessible for all. Wellory is a venture-backed startup based in NYC with a network of over 500+ health coaches, nutritionists and dietitians all over the country.
Named Tech NYC’s “Top Five New York Health and Wellness Companies to Watch in 2020”, Wellory is also the creator of National Nutrition Day, a national holiday dedicated to celebrating healthy eating.
Hochman has been featured in Forbes, Business Insider and named “13 Under 35 Innovators” by her alma mater, Bucknell University.
Wellory, which Emily and I dive into during the show is a newly launched App where users get one-one daily support with nutrition coaches -- think you’re at the grocery store and you’re not sure what you grab, or you’re heading out to dinner and want to pick something that feels right for you but need an extra level of support. Their goal is not to tell people WHAT to eat but to support people to change their relationships with food for good. They help people make micro-adjustments that add up to really big change.
This isn’t another diet...she created Wellory because diet culture is damaging - regardless of your age, gender, or ethnicity, we’ve all been exposed and impacted, but nothing helpful, affordable, or accessible existed. This is about healthy habits for the long haul.
And let’s be clear pizza, dessert, wine, whatever that “bad” thing that crosses your mind is not unhealthy either - that’s the beauty of what they’re doing.
It’s about learning to live in the present moment and trust your body to make the right decisions for you.

This whole...pandemic thing has really challenged my relationship with myself. Without being able to go out...there was only one place to go and that was in and when it’s quiet, the whispers become loud. I decided to look inward, get quiet, notice, and listen.
As I listened and watched I started noticing...how my mood and anxiety was affected by things -- certain things people say, how well I sleep, the way I choose to spend my day, how much water I am drinking, the food I am eating, how I’m moving my body…
I also saw how hard I can be on myself...nothing ever good enough...my body...my work...this podcast...not a good enough friend, co-worker…..could have done MORE.
It’s so hard to reconcile where these feelings come from...I am SO lucky. I have a job I can work from home, I’m healthy, I have amazing friends and family, I have EVERYTHING I could need and more.
That’s all external and often a lot of it doesn’t matter if you’re not safe within yourself. If you don’t feel comfort on the inside.
I think safety and comfort is a combination of internal and external, but without the internal the external carries less weight.
Where we can have an impact is within ourselves -- and I am so excited to share this conversation with Simi Botic with you because we talk about just that.
Simi Botic is a certified holistic health coach, Intuitive Eating counselor, and the author of Letting Go Of Leo: How I Broke Up With Perfection a memoir about overcoming her decades-long struggle with feeling like she wasn't enough. You may recognize today’s guest from the mini series I launched a few months back...if you recall...Patrick was the very first influencer I EVER followed on Instagram @aguynamedpatrick and then one day on my way to yoga I ran into him in an elevator.
Of course...I had to say hi. And here we are now...3 years after that chance encounter having a conversation for my podcast.
How absolutely cool is that.
If you follow Patrick, you know him best for his lifestyle-focused Instagram account, @aguynamedpatrick on Instagram. If you don’t follow Patrick...you should.
On his website agnp.co,
More recently he launched a you tube channel dedicated to interviewing world-class movers and shakers and has been recognized. He has been recognized by the New York Times and The Guardian as a top Instagrammer and was awarded the inaugural Fashion Instagrammer of the Year award by the CFDA. Patrick is a frequent host of dining events, cocktail parties, and gatherings around New York City and is a co-founder of The Liquor Cabinet, a mobile app dedicated to cocktail recipes. He recently launched and founded Untitled Secret, a talent management and creative agency dedicated to the support and development of artists and content creators.
I find the world of influencers and social media so interesting because we so often feel like we know someone based on the stories they share on social (pun intended) -- but in reality all we see is a snippet of that person’s life.
We don’t see the work and curation that goes into creating a business, the stress and anxiety that can come with having yourself tied to your business, and often we don’t see the downs...we only see the sliver that people want us to see.
That’s not a BAD thing...it just is the way it is. But GUESS WHAT!? Influencers….they’re just like us.
And that’s what I love about this conversation...we get to know Patrick and go behind the lens of the beautiful life that he’s created for himself…

It's hard to believe I graduated High School 15 years ago. I still feel so much like the person who sat on that stage but in so many ways I feel incredibly different. I guess that's the beauty of being human - the ability to grow, evolve, and change, yet still hang on to the parts of our younger spirit.
In this episode, I talk about how almost none of this was part of my plan, why that's good, and what I wish someone told me when I graduated from High School...15 years ago!

Today’s episode is the continuation of that conversation where we dive deeper into her book Here All Along: Finding Meaning, Spirituality, and a Deeper Connection to Life – in Judaism (After Finally Choosing to Look There).
We also talk about:
If you’ve already listened to the mini series, you’ll know that Sarah is a really special not to mention incredibly smart and talented person with a gift for meaningful thoughts, ideas, and words. I could have chatted with her for hours about life.
From 2009 to 2017, Sarah Hurwitz worked in the White House, serving as head speechwriter for First Lady Michelle Obama and as a senior speechwriter for President Barack Obama. Prior to working in government, Hurwitz was the chief speechwriter for Hillary Clinton on her 2008 campaign for president and a speechwriter for Senator John Kerry and General Wesley Clark during the 2004 presidential election. Hurwitz is a graduate of Harvard College and Harvard Law School.
These are really impressive credentials, but without any of these Sarah would still be impressive and praise worthy. She reminds me what it means to be good, and no matter what religion or belief system you identify with, I think you’ll find heartwarming inspiration in her words and the lessons she learned from these ancient traditions and practices.
In this solo episode, I talk about how my 2-week pause allowed both myself space to learn, listen, and act as well as create space for the voices who NEEDED to be heard.
My pause is over, but that doesn't meant the learning and listening has stopped.

This week has been hard, painful, and sad.
I had a hard time finding the words I want to use to express how I feel, and I still haven't fully formed them. But for me, silence doesn't feel like an option. Often, I feel too afraid to voice my feelings and my opinions out of fear.
This episode made me feel uncomfortable and nervous. Change is uncomfortable and not easy. If it was, we wouldn't be where we are right now.
In this episode, I am sharing a few of the resources I started to use to educate myself over the course of the weekend and how I am starting to create change within myself right now.
I am learning. One day at a time. Thank you for helping me grow. If you'd like to be in touch about anything mentioned in this episode, please reach out.

In this solo episode, I talk about why I fangirl hard for Ben Platt. It might not be what you think. It's about being reminded of what it means to be good. What it is to be open, honest, vulnerable, and accepting.
If you've ever felt like you don't fit in, like you're in it alone, or uncomfortable in your human-ness, I hope this episode helps.
I get a bit more personal about moments I've felt that way, too.
I also recap the first challenge from season 2 - reducing negative self-talk. I share my experience and how it helped me shift towards a more positive dialogue.

Are you excited? I am.
Season 2 was created out of curiosity. I’m constantly seeking new information and experiences so I can fill my life with meaning and purpose. Chances are you’re looking for the same. I don’t have all the answers, but I do know that we don’t achieve greatness by sitting still or being ok with the status quo.
We get there by putting curiosity into action, by opening our minds to new perspectives and people and by exploring everything that’s available to us.
Together, we’ll discover how we can create change in ourselves and the world around us - how we can expand our perspectives and shift the existing thought patterns that hold us back. With compassion, kindness, and a little bit of inquisition, we’ll talk about everything from health to relationships and ways to optimize your life as well as some of the greatest challenges we face to discover what it really means to live well.
Are you excited? I am.
Tune in to get a sneak peek from the amazing season 2 guests, plus we’ll talk compassion, kindness, and why this was my flakiest quarantine week yet.

I recorded this conversation with today’s guest awhile on Friday, March 27th, and it’s so crazy that 3 weeks feels like ago and a lot has changed but I think the insights & lessons are not only relevant now, but all the time.
You may know Patrick best for his lifestyle-focused Instagram account, @aguynamedpatrick on Instagram. That’s how I first heard of him. He was the very first INFLUENCER I EVER followed. EVER.
The way he crafted stories through images made life seem really beautiful. This account played a large role in why I wanted to move to New York.
Patrick has a way of garnishing life that I think is really special -- making moments memorable and special - even the little ones.

Ty is the first repeat guest of How We’ll Live and our chat on the science of happily ever after is the most listened to an episode of the pod…
As a refresher, TY TASHIRO is an author and relationship expert. He received his Ph.D. in psychology from the University of Minnesota and has been an award-winning professor at the University of Maryland and the University of Colorado. He lives in New York City.
In today’s chat we talk about his latest book, AWKWARD: The Science of Why We’re Socially Awkward and Why That’s Awesome, he explains why some of the same characteristics that make people feel socially awkward can be the same traits that propel them toward extraordinary achievements.
The back of the book says, “as humans, we all need to belong. While modern social life can make even the best of us feel gawky, for one in five us, navigating its challenges is consistently overwhelming -- an ongoing maze without an exit. Often unable to grasp social cues or master the skills and grace necessary for smooth interaction, we feel out of sync with those around us.”
In today’s conversation, Ty and I talk about what it means to be awkward and what it feels like. Ty walked me through an exercise to really understand what it feels like to be in “awkward shoes.”
We also talk about why Ty wanted to study social awkwardness, the three core attributes in many socially awkward people, how today’s cultural landscape makes it even more difficult for awkward people, and why, despite its difficulties being awkward can actually be quite awesome.
We also go on tangents about life, society, and the power of communication.
Whether you match the awkward traits we discuss, Ty’s insights can help us feel empowered to love who we are as we are and to have a little more compassion and empathy for that person who strike us as “weird” or “awkward.”

In a little bit longer intro to this episode, I talk about what’s going to happen on the pod in 2020, including more detailed show notes so you can get what’s meaningful for you out of every episode, what happened to my 2020 goals and what I hope to see for the “You’re Not Alone” Project.
The interview is with Dr. Eric Nofzinger sleep scientist & founder of Ebb therapeutics.
Dr. Nofzinger has spent more than 35 years practicing sleep medicine and studying brain mechanisms of healthy sleep, insomnia, and chronic sleeplessness. He has published several clinical studies related to these topics and authored a book, Neuroimaging of sleep and sleep disorders. He earned his B.A. degrees in Chemistry and Psychology from Miami University, his M.D. degree from The Ohio State University College of Medicine and performed his Psychiatry training at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. He is currently an Adjunct Professor of Psychiatry at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine.
Eric determined that an inability to sleep is caused by overactivity in the frontal cortex of the brain, or "racing mind," and that this overactivity can be reduced by cooling the forehead to naturally trigger a neural network response in the brain, which quiets Racing Mind - those thoughts that keep you awake at night.
In 2019, Dr. Nofzinger launched a drug-free approach to sleeplessness - the product we’re talking about today - a wearable sleep device to help those who suffer from sleeplessness achieve more restorative sleep. The device features a headband containing a fluid that is cooled and maintained at the ideal temperature range over the course of the night, to gently bring your forehead to the perfect temperature and maintain it to help you fall into sleep – and stay there.
If you’ve listened to past episodes, you know that I struggle with sleep, so I decided to give Ebb a shot, and yes...it works. I put a picture on Instagram & the show notes on my site.
One of my biggest ah-ha moments from the episode was the comparison of how we rest our muscles after physical activity because of the known benefits, yet somehow, when it comes to sleep we refuse to rest and let our mos powerful muscle regenerate.

In this episode, I’m sharing a confession...I lied about something...and a story about why the holidays are difficult for me. I’ll also tell you how, even though this Christmas is way different than anything I’ve ever experienced, I’m making this holiday the best one in a long time.
The magic of Christmas changes with each year, and that can be a good thing if we let it.
The holidays emphasize social connection and magic. Sometimes it feels like if we’re not feeling those things there’s something wrong with us; or it makes us sad and frustrated that we can’t find the magic. We watch all the movies, listen to all the music, put up the lights, and the tree and it’s still not there.
And it feels like everyone around us is dressed in matching Christmas pajama sets, making snow angels, gingerbread houses, having snowball fights, and curling up with their loved ones watching Christmas movies.
It can be a really hard time of year, but it can also be really great at the same time.
I know I’m not alone in struggling with these conflicting emotions at the holidays and well...throughout the year, so I hope you enjoy today’s conversation with behavior and technology expert Dr. John Grohol.
He is the founder, editor in chief and CEO of psych central, co-author of Self-Help That Works, a published researcher, sits on the scientific board of the journal, Computers in Human Behavior, and is a founding board member of the Society for Participatory Medicine.
He is truly the OG blogger...since 1995, he has overseen PsychCentral.com, the world’s leading mental health site overseen by mental health professionals offering information, resources, and over 250 support groups to over 6 million people each month. In 2008, it was named one of TIME.com’s 50 Best websites and in 2018, Psych Central reached its 500 millionth visitor.
I discovered John’s work after seeing an article on loneliness.
The most poignant part of this conversation for me in thinking about coping with holiday emotions was understanding my triggers - knowing what makes me feel sad, anxious, or angry and find ways to mitigate those situations appropriately.
During our conversation, we talk about:
I also share with John my tendency to hang on to the past and create expectations of feeling the childhood magic and that impacts my joy today.

Cherie Dawn Carr is the author of five books centered on self-healing through intimate relationship with the natural world. She is an enrolled member of the Choctaw Nation of Oklahoma. She writes as Pixie Lighthorse to honor the unheard voices of her ancestors.
She found that teaching and talking to people about spirituality is challenging while we are possessed by our wounds, shadow, binary perceptions, boundaries violations, religious trauma and collective colonial violations. Her books aim to help individuals sort through the influences that block their connection to greater sources of peace and wisdom.
In today’s conversation, we talk about her new book Goldmining in the Shadows, which explores healing our inner selves and spirits so we can live more consciously today.
We’re at a very particular and poignant time in our society, culture, and especially our political landscape, making this type of healing even more important.
It’s also the holidays, which despite being a happy time for most, can bring up a lot of emotions, anger, and sadness. If you experience that, this episode might be the perfect pathway to understanding why we feel the way we feel and being the healing process.

I’ve been thinking a lot about celebrating our similarities and the things that make us all human so today’s show couldn’t have come at a better time.
I believe there are more things that make us the same than different...even men & women.
I often wonder what type of pressure men feel in today’s society.
What it means to “be a man.”
Boys are or historically have been taught not to cry, to bring home the bacon, and to be “manly” -- whatever that means.
They’re supposed to like sports, have deep voices, and do the chores that require heavy lifting.
I think strides are taken to shift this, but I think taking the time to consider men’s ability to be vulnerable, sensitive, and open about their emotions is really important.
I found a blog post on the Atlantic about shame and gender and a conversation with Brene Brown that shared that men’s shame is inflicted by women in their lives who tend to be repelled when they show chinks in their armor.
This made me sad and want to know what I can do as a woman in supporting men to be open, honest, and real. As michael says in this interview...if you don’t give your man space to share his dreams he’ll never share his fears.
I met today’s guests at the Institute for Integrative Nutrition - you can listen to the unedited version to hear our little catch up sesh - it was so much fun hearing what they’re up to today.
Michael & Pablo are both graduates of the Institute for Integrative Nutrition (Like me!)
Michael DeSanti is the owner of Authentic Self Healing LLC, a men’s fulfillment
coaching company and he is the co-owner of The Vital Guide, a retreat company for
men. He is a Transformational Trainer and the author of “New Man Emerging.” He is
committed to inspiring men to live lives of purpose and fulfillment.
Pablo A. Garcia is also a graduate of The Natural Gourmet Institute’s Chef’s Training Program and has coached 3 years with the Joe Cross Reboot programs at Omega Institute. Motivated by his own personal struggles, Pablo transformed his life by studying and understanding what the body and mind need to thrive. He helps clients shift the habits and patterns that hold them back into positive and sustaining ones that better serve them.
Michael & Pablo joined together to form, The Vital Guide, a company that helps men live more fulfilling lives by using simple yet effective tools. Together with his business partner they facilitate outdoor-based retreats for men seeking to reclaim their vitality and purpose.

In this special "solocast" I am talking about something that’s really important to me - something that’s been on my mind for the past year or so and has shown up A LOT over the past few months.
Along with what I’m talking about today, I'm also going to share a new project that I’m working on - a project that really needs your help in order to have an impact.
Loneliness is being described as an epidemic.
Loneliness doesn’t discriminate against age, gender, job title, role in the home, marital status or the amount of money you make. It can appear unexpectedly at the most unwelcome times.
I don’t want anyone to feel alone - to feel isolated - to feel like it’s not worth it, and I believe that overcoming these feelings takes a conscious effort.
So I wanted to create a solution. I believe the antidote is to share our REAL stories with each other. Stories that we believe could help someone who is going through the same thing we did.
Until 2020, I’ll be sharing these stories on How We’ll Live...mine and when you’re ready, hopefully, yours!
I’ll share stories of heartbreak, loss, trauma, difficulty, embarrassment, anxiety, and fear and how we move on from those feelings with more confidence and grace towards a better, more fulfilled life.
I invite you to share your story on the show. Your story...your truth, could make a difference to someone else.
There are a few ways you can get in touch - you can text me at 315-675-5034, DM me on Instagram @thehaileydaily or email me at hailey@hailey-miller.com.

If you’ve ever felt stuck in a cycle, like “bad things” keep happening to you, like you’re attracting the wrong relationships, or like you just can’t do it anymore this episode is for you. Many of us feel this way, but instead of finding a new way, we stay stuck in the patterns we’ve created, or the patterns we’ve been trained to follow.
The good news is, there is a path out, and for today’s guest, that path was spirituality and connecting with her authentic self. No what she does for a living or what her body looks like, but who she was at her core.
Paige and I talk about how past traumas manifest in our bodies and the impact our life experiences have on our ability to be present and act with compassion towards ourselves and others. We also talk about how those traumas can appear as self-loathing, hatred, and cause a spiral into darkness.
I loved talking to Paige about what it means to manifest, how to let go, and how our intuition, if we listen can be our most powerful guide.
Paige says “When I needed to be thinner, make more money and have an amazing job title, I found that once I got there, I was just as miserable as when I started.
Our self-esteem is hinged on conditions and boxes we need to tick in order to be happy.
We’re missing the point of our lives.”

Dr. Chavez taught me many lessons during this conversation that align with themes I find in every episode like knowing what your values are, strong communication, and mindfulness, but most importantly she taught me there is NO normal.
We also talk about how to create your own sexual persona to define what you need, how to keep the passion going for the long haul, why men and women are so different, why women don’t need to rely on men to create sexual experience, how negative associations with sex impact our present experiences and can create blocks, and the connection between doing what you love and your libido.

Yes, we talk about the benefits of being messy (and YES! There are many), it’s about shifting our thought patterns around what it means to be successful, how we’re conditioned by society, our thoughts on productivity, what it means to clutter mindfully, and how our possessions can actually bring us great joy.
Whether you get joy from being a slob or a neat freak, it doesn’t matter because as far as I’m concerned, the only part of that that matters is the word joy.
In this episode, I talk sat down with Rhea Mehta.
Let me tell you. Rhea is one smart (and inspiring) cookie. She’s a molecular toxicologist - a word I can barely pronounce!
I love Rhea because not only is she so smart, but she’s relatable. We all have a story, and I was so inspired by how she’s using her own to make a difference and inspire others.
She is a healthcare innovator and the CEO of Bowhead Health, an encrypted health wallet and data sharing platform that enables users to become the managers and vendors of their own data. Rhea has a BSc in Biomedical Sciences from the University of Waterloo, a PhD in Molecular Toxicology and Nutritional Biochemistry from the University of Toronto, and is a certified health coach with over 10 years of experience in scientific research and integrative healthcare practice. Money - whether you’re good with your money or feeling like you could use an electric shock reminder every time you open up Amazon and regardless of whether you make a million or 10 thousand, it’s a tricky and sometimes sensitive topic.
There’s a lot of shame in not being able to “keep up with the Jones’s” and feeling like a “have not.”
And most of the time -- it rarely feels abundant.
Etiquette tells us not to talk about it. Unless of course you live in NYC where one-upping one another on how much rent to space ratio is par for the course and how could you possibly save
Well, today, right here, right now my guest Erica and I are breaking that taboo.
Erica Gellerman is a CPA, MBA, personal finance writer, and founder of The Worth Project: a weekly money newsletter you actually want to read. Her work has been featured on Forbes, Money, Business Insider, The Everygirl, The Everymom, and Lifehacker. When she's not writing about personal finance you can find Erica exploring Europe from her temporary home base in London...soon to be Hawaii, which we discuss.
She says “you don't have to choose between being good with money and living a good life.” This really resonated with me because sometimes it feels like in order to follow all of the money and investing rules we see online, we should be putting all of our pennies away for retirement and living in a dark cave.
This was such a lively conversation with Erica - we barely realized we started...note the abrupt start. We really honed in on how strong value system can help you manage your money effectively - this was something that I got really clear on when I was unemployed. You can tell a lot about someone’s values by looking at their bank account.

But what if we could enhance the quality of our life today by confronting our own mortality and shifting the way we think about death?
Death or dying may feel dark and strikes up a mix of emotions for many of us.
There’s the fear of it happening; the anxiety of the unknown; and sadness for those that we’ve lost.
After my conversation with today’s guest Mary Jones, I’ve been thinking a lot more about how I think about death and how I want to leave the world. This process has helped me reflect on my own values and identify the things that are really, truly important to me.
Mary Kelly Jones is the Director of Family Support Services for Hospice & Palliative Care of St. Lawrence Valley in Potsdam New York. With over 25 years’ experience at Hospice, Mary manages Hospice Chaplains, Social Workers, Volunteer Manager and Bereavement Staff. Mary is passionate about educating Hospice staff and the St. Lawrence County community in all matters related to end of life.
She has written over 30 grief publications for hospice families and community. She has served as a member of the Professional Education Committee for the National Hospice & Palliative Care Organization.

Mary also serves as the chair of the St. Lawrence County Suicide Awareness Coalition and currently chairs the St. Lawrence County Community Service Board.
Mary and I talk about:
The earth is a place we all call home. It’s a commonality that transcends borders; it’s the place we all stand on, and if you’ve ever watched nat geo it’s pure magic.

Their vision is a world where commercial urban agriculture is economically feasible, reduces the environmental impact of the food system, and improves food security.
During our conversation we discuss:
Have you ever wondered why the diets that works for me don’t work for you? Or why you try the paleo, keto, fasting, atkins, whatever diet and you don’t see the results like your friend did?
Dr. Ahmed El-Sohemy and I are talking about nutrigenomics.
Nutrigenomics helps us understand how our genes and what we eat interact or the branch of genetic research of how foods affect our genes and in turn genetic variations affect how we react to nutrients in food.
AKA your genes may be causing your lactose intolerance!
Dr. El-Sohemy is the Founder of Nutrigenomix Inc. that offers tests on how genes impact weight loss & body composition, nutrient metabolism, heart health, performance, fertility, food intolerances, and eating habits. He serves as the President and Chief Scientific Officer. He also serves as Chair of Nutrigenomix’s International Science Advisory Board (SAB), which consists of key opinion leaders in the field of nutrigenomics. We also discuss:
This is an atypical episode of How We'll Live - it's the first solo episode! Hailey talks to listeners in a new way, asking for their advice on her recent "roadblock", a personal story about growth and self-love, and highlights from 4 of the earliest episodes of the show.
Do you ever just have a bad day? Or maybe even a bad week?
In a world where "objects on the screen are less real than they seem", it can be easy to fall into the perfection trap or the desire to want life to be as perfect as it appears on Instagram and other social media.
In this episode, the host, Hailey shares a personal moment when she learned what it meant to surrender, to feel truly vulnerable, and the moment made the promise that she would love herself just a little bit more. It is one of her most memorable, stand-out moments on my journey towards positivity, self-love, confidence, and the ultimate pursuit of passion.
While we're more connected than ever, sometimes it seems like we're more isolated, but magic, love, and kindness happen when we're connected through connectedness through sharing our experiences, thoughts, and feelings so we know that we are not alone.
If you’ve ever felt alone; like you’re the only one feeling what you feel, I think today’s conversation will resonate with you. Kate is open and vulnerable about her abuse and eating disorder and recovery. We all have experiences, chaos, and trauma whether big or small and it can be so easy to feel alone in it.
This conversation is really special to me because as you’ll hear at the beginning of the episode, I was meant to meet Kate. When I think back to serendipitous moments, this was one of them.
Kate, formerly known to the world on Instagram as SheBeKaleInIt is a strong, resilient, and beautiful person. Healing trauma emotion etc.
Kate is a yoga instructor, business mentor, and entrepreneur based in Los Angeles. She candidly shares her story and experiences with trauma, mental health and body image with her students and audience online. Through mindfulness and intuitive practices, Kate hopes to inspire others to radically accept themselves, their bodies, and move intuitively. She's also the co-founder of a wellness events business, The GOOD Fest, which hosts 1 day wellness festivals to empower and inspire 400+ women around the country. Kate's writing and teaching have been featured in mindbodygreen, Yoga Digest, YogiApproved and The Fullest.
Kate’s currently working on a retreat Conscious Creators with Ava Johanna and Revamp Retreats as well as my conscious business mentorship program for women in wellness.
During the show we talk about:
Matt Wallaert believes that behavioral science can change the world, and after this conversation, I agree. Matt Wallaert is a behavioral scientist and entrepreneur working at the intersection of technology and human behavior designing products and programs that help people live happier, healthier lives.
He’s also the Chief Behavioral Officer at Clover Health, and the author of the book Start At The End: How to Build Products that Create Change which was released on June 11th. It offers a new framework for design grounded in behavioral science by starting with outcomes instead of processes. The book seeks to understand why people do what they do and how to build products and services to bridge that gap.
Plus, he's a freaking awesome human being.
In our chat we also discuss:
During the episode we talk about:
Matt was one far and away one of the easiest and funniest people to talk to. I wholeheartedly loved this conversation, and I hope you do too.
We are in the middle of an epidemic. A war on drugs.
Experts say the United States is in the throes of an opioid epidemic, as more than two million Americans have become dependent on or abused prescription pain pills and street drugs.
This is affecting the way we live in profound ways, and we need a solution.
While there are many theories and experts sharing their thoughts, research, and beliefs on how to solve this pervasive issue, today's guest is a proponent of the unique and progressive Harm Reduction Model.
Dr. Mark Tyndall is based in Vancouver where opioids are also a pervasive epidemic. Professor of Medicine, Infectious Diseases physician, advocate for public health and human rights.
He has dedicated his career to studying HIV, poverty, and drug use in multiple places around the world
An early advocate for harm reduction programs, Mark was at the forefront of North America’s first legally sanctioned supervised injection facility, INSITE, which has injection booths where clients inject pre-obtained illicit drugs under the supervision of nurses and health care staff. If an overdose occurs, the team, led by a nurse, are available to intervene immediately. Nurses also provide other health care services, like wound care and immunizations. Since then, studies have shown that safe injection sites save lives, reduce transmission of disease and help people access addiction treatment and other medical services. We dive more into this during our talk. He is A proponent of evidence-based public health policy and interventions, and has authored over 250 academic papers and has received multiple honors for his work.
The opioid epidemic is complex and is affecting all of us. This conversation isn’t light, but it’s important. Mark and I discuss:
In today's episode, we’re talking about that ushy gushy love stuff.
You know that can't eat, can't sleep, reach for the stars over the fence, world series kind of love.
We all love love, right? We love falling into it, we love watching other people in it and we love movies about it. There’s something about love that’s comforting and fulfilling.
But dating, relationships, and commitment are hard. They take a lot of work, effort, and thoughtfulness. As divorce rates skyrocket and online dating surges, could we be approaching it all wrong?
That's why we’re not talking about the kind of love where girl and boy meet, fall in love and live happily ever after. Because, in reality, it's just not that simple and straightforward.
Today’s guest, relationship expert Ty Tashiro, is flipping the entire notion of "happily ever after" on its head by putting some science and algorithms behind it.
Ty is the author of the Science of Happily Ever after and most recently Awkward: The Science of Why We're Socially Awkward and received his Ph.D. in psychology from the University of Minnesota and has been an award-winning professor at the University of Maryland and University of Colorado. He lives in New York City.
While his approach may not feel like the most romantic way to think about LOVE, what he shares is really profound and makes a lot of sense. If you’re searching for “the one” but feels like you look in all the wrong places or have already have the one and are working through the challenges of building a lifetime together, I think you’ll really like this conversation.
Not going to lie, I think I got a personal therapy session out of this interview -- could my novelty seeking personality be steering me towards the wrong type of men?
You’ll have to listen to find out.
When you listen, you’ll also hear:
Joe Cross is an Australian entrepreneur, author, filmmaker, and wellness advocate.
He's the world’s OG juicer.
He’s the man behind and starring in the award-winning documentary film “Fat, Sick & Nearly Dead,” which has been seen by more than 30 million people worldwide and is largely responsible for introducing them to drink (and eat) something green. Through books, films, in-person meet-ups and online programs, Joe continues to inspire and motivate a global community of people.
A total well-lebrity - a celebrity in the wellness world - I’d seen his films on netflix and his face came plastered on the side of my juicer.
But Joe, I’ve learned is so much more than juice.
Joe is a story-teller. He’s an inspiration. And after just one conversation he’ll feel like your best friend.
He is also one of the most kind, caring, compassionate, and generous people you’ll ever meet. He says what he means and means what he says and with that thick Aussie accent it always comes from his heart.
Joe has this amazing quality to make everybody feel like a somebody. I think this is how he’s changed so many people’s lives.
We sat down and chatted a few weeks ago when he was in NYC. Of course, we talk about Joe’s personal story, films, juicing, and food, BUT we go so much deeper talking about motivation, perspective and inspiration.
You’ll hear:
My mom is one of the many strong women I am surrounded by each day who motivates me to be the best I can be, act thoughtfully, and inspires me to be curious.
She's a strong woman. A friend. A daughter. A sister. A colleague. A chauffeur. A therapist. A chef. And an inspiration.
I couldn’t think of someone more qualified to talk about life, personal growth, raising children, and finding a new purpose when it feels like your biggest job is done.
The unique thing about my mom and something that I admire, is her ability to take risks and reinvent. She’s been in and out of many different career paths, each of which have been influenced by profound life events. And two years ago, she packed up a UHaul and headed south, to Wilmington, NC to be closer to her happy place...the ocean.
With no friends or clients there to greet her, she started a holistic wellness practice from scratch.
She’s a licensed Massage and Bodywork Therapist, has Advanced Training in Oncology Massage, is a Yoga Teacher, Reiki Master & Occupational Therapy Practitioner
She's taken these credentials deeper to create a unique and meaningful integrative relaxation practice. Her goal is to create a nurturing and supportive place for people to find comfort, to be seen, heard and touched.
I hope you enjoy hearing my mom and I chat and laugh about life, love, loss and so much more, including:

He shares:
Today's podcast guest, Genevieve Piturro is the founder of the nationally recognized non-profit, Pajama Program. She had been climbing the corporate ladder in NYC for 20 years when her inner voice started nagging at her.
When she stopped dismissing it, her path and journey became more clear and easier to follow. It was as if the universe aligned.
Her world was changed forever.
Genevieve is a shining example of pursuing happiness and how great achievement feels when you do things with meaning and purpose.
Today, Genevieve is a mentor for others looking to tune in with their intuition, or as she calls it, the "heart-voice connection" to find a deeper sense of fulfillment.
In our conversation she shares:
Thomas Curran is a personality psychologist who His research rose to prominence following a 2017 publication of the first systems-level cohort study to show that perfectionism is on the rise in American, Canadian, and British college students Since then, he has written and spoken extensively on how we have created societies perfectly calibrated to promote perfectionism, which is contributing to almost epidemic levels of serious mental illness among young people. Thomas is the author of over 30 published papers and has received numerous awards for his scholarship and research.
If you’ve ever scrolled through Instagram wishing you had what “she has”; had your brain on fire with anxiety ensuring all of your t’s were crossed and i’s dotted; or simply hold yourself to the highest of standards...ones that you would never hold someone else to, I think you’re goingn to love today’s episode.
We talk all about:
I first discovered Sathya and his work with Keythi in a National Geographic article. I was moved by their work to improve the lives of small farmers through technology, innovation and creativity.
Keythi designs, adapts and implements low-cost farming solutions that help small farmers increase yield and predictability of produce. They combine these technologies with end-to-end support to give these farmers a seamless path towards income increase. They have developed a “Greenhouse-in-a-box” – an affordable, modular greenhouse bundled with full stack services that uses 90% less water, grows 7 times more food and gives farmers a steady dependable income.
Sathya started his career in accounting, taxation and finance. Quitting his job at PwC, he founded a couple of Agriculture startups to increase his happiness and increase income for farmers; this lead to the formation of Kheyti. He writes on farm matters in Business Line, HuffPost, SSIR, SciDevNet and became a Rainer Arnhold Fellow in 2018, an Aspen New Voices Fellow in 2016, and Acumen India Fellow in 2014. Kheyti’s Greenhouses can enable a farmer to produce 7x more food with 90% less water, but they’ve been out of reach for poor farmers. Kheyti developed a low-cost, climate-resilient Greenhouse-in-a-box; a durable and modular unit that is bundled with services which generates a reliable farm income. Sathya is the cofounder & President of Kheyti, which won many awards including MassChallenge, Millennium Alliance , Design Impact Awards etc., and featured in NatGeo, CNBC, Forbes etc

You'll hear
I never thought I was a technology or ‘data’ person, but what I’ve learned is that big data, AI, and the rapid advancement of technology, when used properly and with care can change the world for the better. Today's guest has had an expansive career highlighting the impact technology and big data can have on healthcare.
Dr. Selanikio has consulted and/or spoken at Davos, Foo Camp, WHO, UNICEF, IFRC, Harvard, MIT, Stanford, Google, DARPA, CNN, Fox News, the Clinton Global Initiative, the Royal Society of Medicine, and for the pharmaceutical and healthcare industry – and has been profiled by the Guardian, Wired, Forbes, TED, The Economist, The Wall Street Journal, Fox News, the BBC, NPR, Information Week, and the Washington Post, among many other publications.
An emergency responder and former CDC epidemiologist and outbreak investigator, in December 2014 - January 2015, he was the lead physician at the IMC Ebola Treatment Center at Lunsar, Sierra Leone. As an officer of the Public Health Service, Dr. Selanikio served as Chief of Operations for the HHS Secretary's Emergency Command Center after the 9/11 attacks. In 2005, he was given the Haverford Award for Humanitarian Service for his work in treating tsunami victims in Aceh.
In our conversation we discuss:
The earth is a pretty important place. It’s the one place we all have in common, the place we put our feet, and a place we hope our children’s children’s children get to enjoy.
But that can’t happen if we don’t play our part. This week I'm sitting down for a fun and enlightening conversation with Abby Cannon.
Abby Cannon, JD, RD is an attorney turned dietitian who lives a very low waste lifestyle. She received a degree in psychology from the University of Pennsylvania and her law degree from Brooklyn Law School. While practicing law in New York City, she realized her true passions were for nutrition, wellness, and the environment and so she returned to school to become a dietitian. Her food philosophy marries sustainability and nutrition in an approachable, non-judgmental way. Abby's Food Court (both the website and the private practice) helps people to make the most sustainable choices for their health and the environment. On any given day, you can find Abby running around New York with glass jars and bamboo silverware. Follow her on her website or on Instagram.
Since our conversation, Abby has made a major career shift and is focusing on being an RD full-time and recently launched an “I Love My Body” campaign that went viral!
During our chat, we discuss:
I hope that Abby will inspire you as much as she inspired me. If you have a minute and like what you’re hearing, I’d love for you to rate, review, subscribe and share with a friend.
