The Midlife Business Show with Suzanne Mountain will be exploring running a business during midlife in the 21st century and how we go about building a business in a digital world when we grew up with typewriters, memos and phones permanently attached to the wall!
There’ll be a mix of powerful online business strategies from how to attract a following on social media to which tech to use to host your course or even how to set goals and make plans.
Plus Suzanne will be interviewing other midlife business owners, just like you, who’ll share their stories about the magical and messy ups and downs of this phase of our life.
She’ll also be weaving in learnings on neuroscience and psychology and business insights from my 30 years of leadership experience in Fortune 500 companies.
Her mission is to help you realise that you’re not too old to grow a profitable business that supports the lifestyle you want. Whether that’s going all in to make the much talked about ‘6 figures’ or like me, moving to your dream house by the sea.
So please grab a cuppa and settle down in your favourite chair for a listen.
And don’t forget to subscribe so that you don’t miss an episode.
Welcome to the final episode of the Midlife Business Show for 2022. I launched the podcast back in February and over the year I've had the pleasure of chatting with 10 wonderful women, all of whom are running incredible businesses, ranging from cookery schools to authors, graphic design, decluttering, weight loss coaching and using numerology to grow your business. They are all incredible.
These women have so many talents, but they're also such beautiful souls that it's been my pleasure to work with them during 2022, and also to interview them and share their wisdom with you, and it's this wisdom that I want you to hear today.
One of the questions that I ask each of my guests is, What advice would you give to your younger self?
Now, this is a powerful question, and of course, by the time we're in midlife, we have so many opportunities to reflect on how we were when we were younger, and how the benefit of hindsight would help us if we could have that. So my guests have answered these questions authentically and from their hearts.
This episode is a compilation of their answers, and it's creating an episode that is just jam-packed with wisdom and humour and all the beauty of midlife. I hope you enjoy it as much as I enjoyed putting it together,

This week, I thought that I would use this episode to reflect on 2022, what a year it’s been. I think we've seen people doing their best to get back to living their lives as they were before the pandemic. People have been getting out and feeling that need for connection, feeling that need to get together face-to-face whenever they can.
It's been a year like no other, so take the time to conduct a review of 2022 and I'd love to know what your reflections are on the year

In today’s episode, I want to talk to you about making each day your best day. It's December and 2022 is nearly over and when I look at social media, I see people feeling really stressed. Really stressed about the state of the economy, about all the things they have to do on their to-do list, about the things they hear on the radio and on TV, and let's face it, stress shortens your life. So today, as we finish the year, I want to talk to you about what you can do to help yourself, and how you can structure your day in ways that support and enrich your life. You can't plan for everything, but you can be proactive about scheduling and creating your working days. Episode Highlights: (02:41) Figure out your perfect day by asking yourself these 9 questions (04:55) When we set up a business remember we’re creating it for us not just our clients (06:14) Think about sketching out your ideal week (07:28) Watch out for all-or-nothing statements (09:34) Look for solutions instead of drowning in stress About Suzanne: Suzanne Mountain is an Online Business Coach and Course Creation Expert for business owners 45+ who want to monetise their online presence without spending all day scrolling on social media. This week, I will be sharing the shocking results of a survey published by 55 Work Redefined. The report set out to look at the impact of ageism on individuals in the workforce and showed that the relationship between the over-fifties and work is broken.
Now, it will come as no surprise to most of you here, that ageism in the workplace and in any environment really winds me up. I'm a believer in positive ageing, in living our best lives whatever age we are. So, as an ex-HR Leadership Development person and having spent 30-plus years in large Fortune 500 companies, one of my key values is around equality. And of course, as I've got older, the value around ageism has become even more important because now that I'm in my early sixties, it is really, really key to me that I demonstrate and role model how wonderful it is to be at this age and to be able to do all the things that I can do.

In this week’s episode, I want to talk to you about websites. Now, when people book a call with me for the first time, one of the questions I ask them is, do you have a website? And I then go and have a look at their website to understand what their business is and how it's working for them. Many times when we actually get on the call, I find out that the individual I'm talking to has a website but isn't clear who their ideal client is. Often, they're not making regular sales and yet they're investing money in a website. And quite often I see a discrepancy between the images I see on social media and the ones that I see on the website.
So, I thought it would be worth me talking to you today about three reasons why you don't need a website, and then to show that I'm not anti-website, three good reasons to have one.

Today, I’m going to talk to you about why it is really important for you to understand your ideal client. Now, there's a lot of talk in the online business world about ideal clients, and some of it can appear very restrictive. And if you are like me, you may have resisted honing in on your ideal client.
When I set up my coaching business seven years ago, I had a long history of coaching board members, senior management, and rising talent within the corporate setting. I'd also spent many years honing my coaching skills, including undertaking coaching qualifications at one of the world's leading business schools and delving deeper into several other areas of coaching and coaching modalities. So I considered myself to have some deep experience that could help so many different people. So when I heard the concept of ideal clients and understanding who your ideal client was, I was quite resistant.
I felt like as a new business owner, actually honing in and saying, this is my niche and this is who I work with, would lead me to have fewer clients. In reality, every time I niche a bit deeper or a bit smaller, I gain more clients. And whilst this feels counterintuitive, the reason for this is that people want to buy from an expert.

This week, I want to tell you the story of a new client of mine. It's quite a sad story as far as I'm concerned, and it's something that I don't want you to fall for. So that's why I'm talking about it and I'm talking about it with the permission of the client to share this story so that you don't end up in the position that she ended up in. But I am going to use a false name for her because she's a bit embarrassed about what took place and the fact that she fell for it.

In this week’s episode, I’m going to discuss how you can bring more cash into your business in Q4 than you've ever done in that quarter before. So, let's start by addressing the elephant in the room, the holidays aren't the most wonderful time of the year for some small business owners, it's true. While some business owners get giddy about the holidays, like a kid on Christmas morning, others dread them and not just because they have to host their in-laws again.
Big businesses start planning their marketing campaigns for the final three months of the year way back in the summer, people are in buying mode and they want to spend their money. They have their credit cards at the ready, and they will spend it not just on gifts, but also on themselves and on their businesses. However, in my seven years of this business, I've noticed that small business owners miss out on so much of this spend by not actually having their act together in time and not having a plan about what they're going to promote.
So, suddenly those big promotion days come round and there's lots of noise and they think, “Oh, I should have done something. I should have thought about what I was going to promote.” Yes, that's so true.

Today on the Midlife Business Show, I'm going to be talking about four simple tweaks for you to increase your reach on Instagram. Marketing on Instagram is a long game, but it can be a lucrative one. The first thing to know about Instagram is that most people don't become insta-famous overnight and actually I'd ask you to consider whether you wish to be insta-famous. That said Instagram has proven that it’s a powerful marketing tool with staying power. As of January 2022, there are a whopping 1 billion Instagram users and over 30 million UK users and that number continues to grow every day.
So, no matter what you sell, it's safe to say that there are likely people on Instagram who might be interested in buying it. If you have a flare for either images, writing or speaking, you can potentially reach thousands of ideal clients on Instagram if you know how to use it correctly.

This week, I'm going to be talking about how to create new content that's suitable for repurposing. When choosing an older piece of content to repurpose, it's fine to start with whatever you've got. But if you are creating content from scratch, you need to think about how you will repurpose that content, right from the get-go rather than as an afterthought.
When you start with repurposing in mind, it's much easier to repurpose your original piece of relevant, high-quality, content to different platforms with different audiences, styles, etc.

Today, I'm going to talk to you about repurposing content. That is how to convert your content into other social media posts so that you don't have to write new ones. Let's start by setting the scene, you've spent an entire week crafting a highly compelling blog post packed with mounds of research, oodles of original ideas, and even a very relatable personal anecdote that you are super excited to share. Or maybe you've just recorded an epic podcast with a spectacular guest or shared your story with more bravado than you have ever done before, or even just tucked away your ring light, because you've finally finished a YouTube video that your audience has been asking for months or years. And then you hit publish, have a celebratory cup of coffee and wait, and move on to creating your next piece of genius content.
Does that sound like you?
The truth is most business owners are stuck on a neverending treadmill of near-constant content creation. They get a good idea, craft content around it, put it out there on one platform or a few and forget about it before the week is over. The bad news is creating content that way is exhausting, especially in this heat and the good news is there is another better way, and it actually involves a lot less content creation and a lot more content promotion.
Let's be honest, if you're a smart business owner, you likely already know content repurposing is something you should be doing. Maybe you've dabbled in announcing your YouTube link on your Instagram or sharing your beautifully written blog post on your Facebook business page. Have you ever wondered exactly what you can do to ensure that even more people see, hear or experience your content?
If so, you are in the right place.

In this week’s episode, I want to continue talking about becoming more soul aligned in your business. The particular topic for today is how to challenge your old beliefs so that you can stop stalling and step boldly forward in your business.
Experts believe that the beliefs that we have about ourselves and our abilities are formed between the ages of zero and eight years old. These lessons are not necessarily verbalized to us, but children are exceptionally smart. Studies show that babies who are left in a crib without their needs being met will develop feelings of abandonment and distrust. So, if many of our most important lessons are learned at this early age, you might think we're doomed but the good news is they can be unlearned and changed.

In this week’s episode, I talk about how to get clear on what you are divinely designed to create in your life. We’re going to dig deeper and I’m going to show you how you can make this happen.
One of my favourite quotes is “life is not a dress rehearsal” and it's something that by the time we get to midlife, we really start to resonate with, I'm not sure who said it, but it's a powerful reminder to live life to the fullest each and every day. If you're not aligned with your business and you're just going through the motions, is that living life to the full? So many people either forget or never realize that we are in charge of creating a life we love.

Today, I want to talk to you about setting the stage for long-term customer loyalty with a successful bitesize offer.

It’s attractive to your potential clients as it offers a low-risk way of getting a feel of what you provide and what it's like to work with you.

In this week’s episode, I want to talk to you about the benefits of journaling for your business. This is something that I'm very passionate about because I truly believe it is a tool that you can use that will really make a difference in your business.
One of the best aspects of running your own business is the freedom to plan your day the way you want to. You get to decide when you work and when you have time off, you don't have a boss and a fixed schedule. You set your own goals and you decide when and where you work. If you struggle to stay organized you’ll quickly find yourself working too many hours and likely end up on the road to burnout. An ideal method for creating structure is to fit journaling into your daily routine.

In this week’s episode, I'm going to be talking about a subject that comes up time and time again when I'm working with my clients and that is self-confidence. Even successful business owners want to find more self-confidence. People who exude self-assurance easily influence others, build bigger, more profitable businesses, earn more money and seem to have more fun and success.
As a coach, it is really common for clients to confide in me that they think they could do much more if they had more self-confidence. If that's you then be assured that you are not alone in feeling like that, indeed, it's not unusual for a client to approach me and say that part of the agenda for us working together is to help them build their confidence. Self-confidence is something each of us has to develop and knowing a few strategies for improving self-confidence will ensure that you feel better and you are more able to do things in your business.

This week's episode is dedicated to International Women's Day. This year, the theme is break the bias. So I'm going to be talking to you about what that means to me and show you some ways that can help you step forward and think about how you show up in the world in order to help break the bias.
Now breaking the bias, they're asking us to imagine a gender-equal world free of bias, a world free of stereotypes and discrimination. A world that is diverse, equitable, and inclusive. A world where difference is valued and celebrated. Just take a moment and imagine how amazing it would be to live in that world. But the question really is how do you break the bias in your community? How do you use your business and your talents and your wisdom to help break the bias?

In this week's episode, I’m going to talk about a very real phenomenon, business burnout. It's one of the most prevalent problems of online entrepreneurs. We'll take a look at what it is, why it happens, and what you can do to prevent it. I'll also explore seven signs of burnout and suggest alternative solutions that might be just what you are searching for. If you love your business and you are getting frustrated at parts of it that don't seem to change no matter how hard you work, if conditions have changed for you personally, dumping more responsibility on your plate, as it sometimes does during midlife and it’s taking all the fun out of life for you. If you find yourself engaged in destructive habits, even small ones that you make repeatedly, and wonder why you just can't get out there and get it done, then this episode is for you.
