Are you a busy professional with a to-do list a mile long? Do you wish you could just control your brain, time, clutter, or ADHD? If you struggle with time management, paperwork and productivity, this podcast is for you. Your host, Catherine Avery, is an ADHDer and Neurodiversity Coach, so she gets you. On this podcast, she and her guests will offer productivity tactics that work with your differently wired brain, not against it, to help you gain control over your time, space, and information.
In the first of this month’s series “Uncluttered Holidays”, Catherine talks about the importance of reflection in the month of December whether you’re Christian and believe in the quiet time of Advent or you celebrate in other ways embracing the peace and darkness that comes in the winter. Catherine busts through the unrealistic expectations of the season and let’s you know that you’re ok even if you aren’t wildly enthusiastic about the holidays. She asks that we give one another space and grace as we navigate this busy time of the year. She gives a strategy (and handouts) to help you create your intentional and less stressful holiday season. You can reduce that stress by releasing what’s not working for you, whether that’s skipping baking 5 kinds of cookies or limiting your time with the relative who has too much eggnog. Ilene & Ted shared how she and Ted met and how they work together even though Ilene is a person with she believes undiagnosed ADHD and her husband is a list-maker and organizer "freak". They also shared their insights into how small companies and solopreneurs can grow their businesses through marketing techniques that really work, giving several strategies that you can use right now. About Ilene Greene opened MarketShare Communications in 1986 to bring results-driven marketing and advertising services to small and middle-market companies in northern NJ and the NY/NJ metro area. In 1976, Ted founded Design Graphics, a print graphics and marketing agency in northern NJ, and in 2004, after reconnecting with Ilene, merged his company with MarketShare Communications. They became co-owners and grew the business into a digital marketing agency serving small and middle market clients and non-profits around the country. In October of 2008, Ilene was inducted into the NJ Advertising Club’s Advertising Hall of Fame and in March of 2009, was named one of New Jersey’s “50 Best Women in Business” by NJBIZ. Denslow is the leader and quite possibly the pillar of coaching for organizers. Denslow realized that while she could help people get organized, if they haven’t learned the habits to maintain it, they just end up frustrated and disorganized again. Coaching filled this gap. Real change comes from the opportunity behind the thought of I need to get organized. So many of our organizing and productivity clients have ADHD or are incredibly stressed. Denslow and I talk about women and ADHD – how it shows up differently and how girls get lost because they don’t cause as many problems in the classroom. ADHD may be showing up as anxiety in your teen girl. You won’t want to miss Denslow’s take on the newest research from Russell Barkley on ADHD and life expectancy. Denslow Brown, CPO, CPO-CD, ICD Master Trainer, MCC After 20 years as a professional organizer (working on-site in homes, home offices and businesses), Denslow went on a search for a method to support the belief and behavior changes her clients desired (not just changes to their environments). She found the answer in coaching, eventually earning a Master Certified Coach credential (ICF); she became a coach for adults with ADHD and a mentor coach for professionals in the fields her work intersects with (organizing, productivity, ADHD, and coaching). In 2006, she founded Coach Approach Training / Institute for Applied Coaching to train and develop coaching expertise in professionals whose expertise is in ADHD, productivity, and/or organizing. CAT/IAC is an ICF-accredited coach training program, offering eight coaching credentials. ADHD in adulthood is about figuring out how to do the right thing at the right time. We find it hard to manage the details of daily life and we are very in the moment. Add in the stress of this insta-life we live now and you can imagine what it’s like for the bright, shiny object syndrome brain. The power is in the pause. And that’s very hard for the ADHD brain. But if we can build in that brief pause to consider our next right step, our work and life would be much easier. That’s response inhibition. We need to start by stopping. Tune in for ways we can place this pause in to our day so that we can work more efficiently and harness the superpowers of our differently wired brains. I asked Dan Berman to share a story from his time in ad sales at Oprah Winfrey Network. He was influenced by her leadership. So we kick off our interview with the importance of authenticity in leadership. We then discuss sales and how there is no selling in sales. It’s all about the connection and the mutual win. It’s not about what you sell and it’s all about who you are. Find out why the key to coaching comes from the Eagles: “So often times it happens that we live our life in chains. And we never even know we have the key.” Bottom line whether it’s sales or leadership or coaching, it’s all about listening and caring about others. About Dan Berman Helping others become better versions of themselves has always been a passion of mine. In my coaching practice, I utilize intuition, empathetic listening, insight and humor to effectively build trusting relationships and bring about actionable solutions for my clients – both individuals and executives within organizations especially during periods of challenging transitions and change. Combining my corporates sales leadership experience and acquired coaching tools and expertise from a rigorous certified professional coaching training program, I advise my clients on identifying, clarifying and achieving their goals and understanding key obstacles and limitations that get in the way. My goal is nothing less than actionable solutions for my clients which allow them to move forward more satisfied and more effectively. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

I explain executive function and the words you can find in your childhood report cards to get a sense of if you have ADHD or other brain based challenges. Second, I help you with a few skills to help you finish a project without getting sidetracked. I also explain intrinsic vs extrinsic motivation. Third, I explain how digital clutter can be even more challenging than paper clutter and when it’s best to use a scanner to keep your paper files. Finally, I explain why it’s important to take a break. In this case, I’m taking the month of August off from the podcast. Can’t wait to see all of you again in September! Leah explains how her background in teaching influences her leadership. Leah does theatre in her free time. We talk about how we can become better leaders because of our variety of experiences. The starting point of difficult conversations is about being in our story. Maybe we felt we didn’t get the validation we needed as kids either at home or in our education. We need to address the deep roots of the other person’s story so they can feel heard. That’s where the real connection happens. Leah contends that when we gently have those difficult conversations, our connections can grow even stronger. Rest is part of productivity. I agree and Leah will tell us why it works for her. Tune in because it’s possible that Leah even breaks out into song. About Leah Zimmerman Leah Zimmerman started paying attention to how people communicate when she was as a child, and as an adult has continuously sought to be the adult she had wanted for herself and to help others to grow into themselves as well. She blends a background in education, theater and leadership to help people feel heard, communicate in difficult conversations and grow into the personal power and leadership needed to live a fulfilling life. I asked my guest, Lisa Zawrotny, to talk about balancing the many roles that we face in the sandwich generation. She speaks to the important of taking a break in transition. While clearing physical clutter is important, the work of healing emotional clutter is even more so. We talk about the mindset it takes to let things go especially when we think (know – hah!) we’re right. We delve into the effects of chronic stress and the pandemic. And how we create systems that honor our thresholds. We wrap with a discussion of the importance of breathing when we’re in those stress filled moments and the power of the pause. I asked Clara to join me on the podcast because she had a life changing experience in taking a weekend off. This doesn’t sound like a big deal, but when you’re a military spouse with a couple of kids, you’ve just moved into a hotel in a brand new country, your parents are moving and ALL THE THINGS plus a pandemic, taking a weekend off is a major deal. We talk about the resistance we feel as parents to get time away followed by the surrender and the release. And that monkey brain chatter that happens when we have nothing planned and nothing to do. Yet it’s so important to unplug, to be a human BEing not a human doing. But when we rest, the kind where you get bored, it’s transformational. My guest, Leo Tumwattana, talks to us today about hyper-scheduling and why it works better than just having a to do list. With a to do list, you don’t have a time commitment for making that action item happen. When Leo couldn’t find a project/time management tool that met his needs, he created his own, Sorted. One of the things I most admire about Leo is that he incorporates features his users suggest into the app, such as a grocery list (love this!) and emojis. We discuss how using a project management tool helps you see where you’re spending your time and when you’re most efficient. Leo is a night owl. I’m an early bird. We wrap up with how hyper scheduling can help the ADHD brain, reduce your stress levels, and free up time you can spend with your family and friends. Dan Paulson and I start our conversation about systems with our why. So we can spend time with our families. Ideally, in beautiful places not just home. For Dan, that’s a home on the Lake of the Ozarks. Dan lives in Wisconsin so a trip to the lake in winter is a true reprieve. We talk about the benefits of working online, even though we both miss in person meetings. Dan tells the story of how he learned his work ethic and then how he had to unlearn it by putting boundaries, automation, and systems in place so that he can enjoy his family. Of course, we explain several of these – time blocking, automated scheduling, scheduled emails, reusing content, and project management apps. Linda Holt is one the most brilliant people I know. She’s an interior designer and a photographer. She has combined these two loves into teaching interior designers how to photograph their spaces with an iPhone. We start by talking about how we met and then why to invest in a really great smartphone. When I considered how much a camera cost, add up the cost of film back in the day, and realized that my iPhone could now replace my big heavy DSLR, it became a no brainer. Fact is if you’re a small business owner, not just designers you need to take great photos. But you also need to be productive about how you get your work out on to social media, so have a system. We also discuss watermarks, copyright, and lighting. We even foray into Swedish death decluttering. If that doesn’t make you want to tune in, what will? Jennifer Sherwood and I delve deep into how to live life intentionally even, or maybe especially, in the midst of a pandemic. We’ll tell you why New Year’s Intentions fail and how to choose a word of the year. Jennifer shares her story of celebrating her 50th birthday in a fun way that was nothing at all like she expected. We can still celebrate even if it’s different. We also focus on what it means to live from appreciation instead of gratitude. And how maybe appreciation is a little easier than feeling grateful when the world is super crazy right now. We wrap it all up in a bow with the ShiFtshow. I’m still figuring out what that means myself, but tune in because it’s a super cool divine download moment. About Jennifer Sherwood works with women who are overwhelmed, feel pulled between work and home, rarely make time for themselves and worry that this is as good as it gets. Today my guest, Jeannie Spiro, and I focus on shifting when your business model is entirely in person and the world is hit with a pandemic. Jeannie’s model for attracting clients has always been in person speaking. I’ve heard her speak several times and attended her 3 day event. Jeannie is on a mission to teach midlife women entrepreneurs how to have a lifestyle business. Too often, myself included, we jump into entrepreneurship thinking that it will be so much easier. I also lay out the strategies I’m using to now host an even better podcast! At the end I share a bit about my why. Hint – it has to do with the power of the pause and setting up systems in your business. Michelle Mercier joins Catherine Avery today on the podcast to discuss how much we hate the term work-life balance. Michelle calls this integration, which makes much more sense when you think of the wheel of life pie chart (link below). It all starts with knowing your values and then living into them. We bust the myth that being busy is being productive. Productivity comes from unplugging, from taking that quiet break for yourself away from the business. And how this is even more important in a time of a pandemic when we need to do all the things all the time. We wrap up with a sneak peek into the beauty that is Michelle’s brand new podcast The Resilient Entrepreneur. You have to check it out! In this episode Catherine talks about saying “No”. Many of us don’t do this often enough, then we have “yes regret”. We end up worrying and stressing about how we are going to fit it all in and get it done without giving up something. When we succeed do we really do it on our own? Successful people have had people in their corner, a team behind them, a mentor, and opportunities. They’ve had a game plan, set goals, kept their focus on the prize, and learned from their failures. That’s the recipe for success, big and small. Speaking of success, Katie Settel just had an amazing photography exhibit (un)Forgotten a tribute to her brother.
