Mud Between Your Toes is a memoir about my life - a gay, white boy growing up during the 1970s Rhodesian Bush War. This podcast started as an audio version of the book, but has now evolved into a series of conversations -- mostly of an African theme -- with characters and personalities with stories to tell. Nigel Simmonds has spent more than half his life in Asia — in Hong Kong, Singapore and Indonesia — chronicling the lives and foibles of the rich and famous as a columnist for the South China Morning Post's once-revered Lai See column, before taking the helm of the high society glossy magazine Tatler and Bali’s sophisticated The Yak Magazine. He chats to me about his latest book, Eating the Wind and discusses the highs and lows of trying to escape the rat race.

She was on her way to a factory in China to see her first ever prototype medical grade vagina. “What the hell is a medical grade vagina?” I asked. My scant knowledge of false vaginas stretched to rather awful products in the window of Ann Summers. Season03, Episode 20 - Last week, South Africa experienced some of the worst violence in modern times. The rainbow nation, with arguably the world’s most liberal constitution, erupted into violent riots, sparked by a toxic mix of unemployment, corruption, political tension, and tribal nationalism following the jailing of former President Jacob Zuma.
As the world looked on in shock, I ask veteran journalist, Peta Thornycroft, how Africa’s poster child for equality and economic progress, descended into such chaos.

British actor Nick Reding, best known for his role as PC Ramsey in ITV’s The Bill, left the comfort of the West End to found S.A.F.E Kenya – an NGO dedicated to combatting female genital cutting, HIV/AIDS, education on sexual reproduction, hygiene, water sanitation and violent extremism
Season 03 - Episode 17 of MUD BETWEEN YOUR TOES CONVERSATIONS WITH PETE WOOD. Nick Reding is possibly best known for his role as the tough, but loveable East End cop, PC Pete Ramsey in ITV’s drama, The Bill. But despite a successful and comfortable acting career, which included roles in Silent Witness, The Constant Gardener and Angels in America, he left the bright lights of London to found S.A.F.E. (Sponsored Arts for Education) a "Kenyan NGO and UK charity that uses street theatre and community programmes to educate, inspire and deliver social change". Their campaigns include the eradication of the barbaric Female Genital Cutting (FGC), HIV/AIDS, education on sexual reproduction, hygiene, water sanitation and violent extremism.

Specialising in counter-terrorism, his broadcasts have appeared regularly on ABC in Australia and on Voice of America and he’s here today to chat to me about his career and his book, Punji Trap – the spy who didn’t love us. Pham Xuan An was a Communist agent whose espionage adventures - under the cover story of a celebrated war correspondent in the Western Media -- were as brilliant for Hanoi as they were shattering for Washington during the tumultuous days of the Vietnam War.

It would mark the abrupt end of Australian journalism on the ground in China since diplomatic ties were established in 1972.

Its founding sparked the beginning of a much larger gay rugby movement - which to date includes over 70 clubs across the world.
Zimbabwean born, Tim Sullivan is their President and he chats to me about the club - and the impact it’s had on rugby - and the new moving documentary, Steelers: The World's First Gay Rugby Club - which premieres online at the Glasgow Film Festival in 2021.

The foundation fights for lesser-known — or even lesser-loved — endangered species such as pangolin, serval, genets, bush baby, hyena and wild cat.

In season 2, episode 16 of MUD BETWEEN YOUR TOES, CONVERSATIONS WITH DAVID FOX. On Saturday 8th of October, 2016 journalist David Fox was enjoying a beer at the On-On Billiard Bar in Sanur, on the Indonesian island of Bali. After just one sip he was tapped on the shoulder by a man who identified himself as a police officer asking “do you have something on you?”.
He did.
And so began 8 months of hell in a Balinese jail.

Photo: 3 Commando was nicknamed the "Lovers", or sometimes "The Green Machine", the latter coming from the green jerseys its men wore in intra-regimental sporting competitions. The "Lovers" nickname emerged during the mid-1960s, and had its origin in the off-duty reputation of its soldiers, who were reportedly very popular amongst the young women of Salisbury. This reputation also contributed to the design chosen for the Commando emblem and flag in 1968, during Operation Cauldron.

With an over-load of information and plenty of conspiracy theories surrounding COVID-19, Elizabeth, an epidemiologist, academic researcher and the director of Ternyata Ltd., a public health consultancy based in London, UK, investigates the ways in which politics, economics and culture influence public health. She talks to me from London about Corona virus (COVID-19) and other epidemics such as HIV/AIDS. She has written 2 books - Indonesia Etc.: Exploring the Improbable Nation, and The Wisdom of Whores: Bureaucrats, Brothels and the Business of AIDS, and her TED Talk "Sex, drugs, and HIV - let's get rational" describe the ways in which politics, religion and culture can outweigh scientific evidence in decision-making about HIV prevention.
Pisani is a Visiting Senior Research Fellow at King's College London's Policy Institute, an Honorary Professor in the Department of Population Health at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, and a Fellow of the School of Health Policy and Management at Erasmus University, Rotterdam.

Spending one night in the bright lights of Caribbea Bay resort for a flutter at the casino, then across the lake to the beautiful Matusadona national park. Idyllic days marred by terrorism. Teenage antics. Crocs and hippos and spearfishing.

Often it was akin to the Mad Hatters tea party, with a constant stream of eccentric, liberal and occasionally famous people fighting their way through packs of dogs and pigeons underfoot.

EPISODE 30 – THE LUNCH DO (PART 1). Rhodesian farm gardens and the superb weather were the ideal space for large, often rowdy lunch dos with up to 40 guests or more. Of course, fleets of servants also helped. The downside meant long, tedious journeys stuck in the car with an irascible father.

My first friend Alec Chimbata - this is his story.
Alec was my age. He was Fred and nanny’s first-born son, (now Fred was our cookboy and his wife was my nanny) and for an hour every afternoon Alec and I would have the freedom of the compound and the surrounding bush.
Over time, something intangible changed and would stay changed forever. That age of innocence was gone. As I met other kids my own age and skin colour, I started to see a world outside the confines of the farm, and my feelings for Alec shifted.
