NYS Manufacturing Now is FuzeHub’s premier podcast with two main goals. The first, is to showcase new technologies and innovations developed right here in New York. The second, is to close the knowledge gap of small-medium size manufacturers about the NYS resources that can help them solutions to business and technical challenges.

The finishing department at many small-to-medium manufacturers is a “black box” with manual operations and limited production insights, explains David Pietrocola, the co-founder and CEO of Cohesive Robotics. Kepco Inc. of Flushing, New York designs and manufactures power supplies for industries that include offshore wind and solar power. As Mark Kupferberg, a Kepco owner, explains, the company was founded in 1946 by family members with connections to Dr. J. Robert Oppenheimer and the Manhattan Project.
Today, Kepco serves military and civilian markets and makes power supplies that do more than supply electric power to an electric load. That’s because this New York State manufacturer specializes, as Kuperberg says, in "breaking bottlenecks" that slow down labor-intensive electronic testing.
As listeners to this episode of New York State Manufacturing will learn, Kepco also makes power supplies that regenerate power instead of just dissipating energy as heat, a feat that reduces costs and cooling requirements. With products that make less electronic noise, Kepco also provided the "secret sauce" to a Nobel Prize winner in Physics.
Vitality in the Valley 2024 featured a pre-event reception for exhibitors with fantastic food and drink from New York State’s Mohawk Valley. Our second guest, Tina Douglas of Old Homestead Farm, traveled to Vitality in the Valley along historic Route 20 from Richfield Springs, New York. Tina and her husband, who also runs Farm Boyz Construction, raise cattle and sell beef. You’ll also find pork, chicken, eggs, milk, barbeque sauces, seasonings, and rubs at their farm store. Tina brought two delicious roasts to the pre-event reception and shared her plans to add agriculture tourism and education to the family farm.

The Advance 2 Apprenticeship (A2A) program is an employment initiative that’s improving access to apprenticeship programs for people with intellectual and development disabilities. It’s also providing a non-traditional source of talent to NYS manufacturers who are facing workforce challenges. In the Empire State, apprenticeship programs for people with disabilities have a record of success, as shown in this video. Yet misconceptions remain, beginning with the word “disabled” itself. AeroMed, Inc. of Amsterdam, New York makes equipment for the control of airborne infectious diseases such as tuberculosis and COVID-19. Bill Palmer, the company’s founder, has designed numerous products that use either high-efficiency particulate air (HEPA) filters or germicidal ultraviolet light (GUV). Today, AeroMed supplies upper-room GUV systems, HEPA air purification equipment, aerosol treatment chambers, and room pressure monitors. A global business, the Mohawk Valley manufacturer has partners in India and Africa with installed systems in Vietnam, Pakistan, and many other countries.
Before COVID-19, AeroMed’s equipment was used mainly in the fight against tuberculosis (TB), an airborne infectious disease that is rare in the United States but that kills thousands of people a day around the world. COVID-19 is viral rather than bacterial, but the TB bacterium is like the COVID-19 virus in that both microorganisms are spread when an infected person coughs or sneezes. Moreover, some people who are infected with TB or COVID-19 remain asymptomatic – meaning that they do not display symptoms. U.S. hospitals see relatively few TB patients, but COVID-19’s burden on healthcare everywhere is well-known.
