The Southwest Passage could be the answer the United States has been looking for.....The Southwest Passage is a culmination of 15+ years of research into the possibility of establishing an inland
canal connecting the Mississippi River to the desert southwest. The resulting Southwest Passage could provide
this connection, with the maximum benefit and lowest possible construction cost. Every year an average of 105-
Trillion gallons of fresh water flows from the Mississippi River into the Gulf of Mexico. If we took 1/3 of this,
and sent it through the Southwest Passage, it could irrigate up to 54-Million acres of new farmland. The
Southwest Passage will be capable of moving 35-Trillion gallons of water per year from the Mississippi River
to the Imperial Valley in California. This water would be used to irrigate new farmland in the desert southwest,
while providing an automated barge transportation system. The additional crops will provide the added
feedstocks needed for biofuels, while reducing greenhouse gas emissions. The waterway will reduce the cost of
freight and provide much needed hydro-electrical power generation capacity.
2009 Biodiesel Impact Award Recipient, Dr. Randall von Wedel, Founder and Principal Biochemist for CytoCulture International. Dr. Von Wedel was instrumental in helping to bring biodiesel to the West Coast. Since the early '90s, he has opened California's first retail pump, implemented biodiesel in fleets such as Berkeley University's, advised San Francisco on its biodiesel program, implemented quality control programs for fleets, and helped pioneer marine uses of biodiesel, to name just a few of his endeavors. Dr. Von Wedel and his company, CytoCulture, provide testing and quality assurance consulting to fleets around the country. He continues to be a passionate, tireless advocate for the growth of biodiesel.
