Rock art is one of those things that just captivates your attention. The ancient carvings, drawings, and paintings tell a story. Sometimes we can interpret what that story is and sometimes we can't. World renowned rock art expert, Dr. Alan Garfinkel joins APN founder Chris Webster and a cast of expert guests to talk about rock art: what is it, how do we know how old it is, who made it, and much more. Join us as we take you on a journey through space and time via pictures on rock.

We're taking a deep dive on ancient writing on this episode! After talking about the recent deciphering of Linear Elamite on the last episode we just wanted more. We'll talk about what writing means and mention other undeciphered languages. In the last two segments we'll talk about first written scripts in China and Mesoamerica. And for members, we've got a cool bonus segment about a curious artifact found in Mexico in the 1990s.

In order to begin to understand the symbols we see on the rocks and the people that made them we need to understand their environment. Carlos Gallinger has spent a lifetime studying the habits of the Bighorn Sheep in order to understand the people that live with, and off, off them. For example, it’s not feasible to take down a Bighorn sheep ten miles from your family. You need to be where the sheep are and understand them. Native people had this ability and Carlos wants to understand that ability.

China Lake Naval Weapons Center in central eastern California is home to many weapons inventions and the most dense collection of rock art in the western hemisphere. Steve Waller is an expert in the study of ArchaeoAcoustics. ArchaeoAcoustics is the study of sound in the prehistoric environment. Mr. Waller got his start in the caves of France while pursuing a passion for rock art study. One idea that Mr. Waller pursued was the idea that rock art was actually inspired by sound - specifically the sound in a cave. Albert Knight traces his associations with rock art studies throughout his lengthy career and focuses on the nature of discovery and the most remarkable sites he has had the joy of working on. Burro Flats in the Simi Valley of southern California in Los Angeles County is akin to the Chumash rock art painted pictograph traditions. The site exhibits polychrome paintings within a rock shelter that some believe are documentation of the oral traditions and ritual activities associated with the movements and timing of the sun. There is a sun dagger that appears at the solstice and pierces a concentric circle element. The ghost dance was a revitalistic movement that was most popular in the 1870s and 1890s. The religious leaders of the ghost dance movement were religious specialists who dreamed a prophetic vision. That vision included that the world was to be remade over and that the dead would come back to life and the world would returnTo the way it was before your Americans entered their lands. To usher in that New World native people were to dance around dance for several days day and night and that by praying and dancing and singing this would bring in a new world of peace and prosperity. Anthropologist and archaeologist have identified about two dozen rock art sites that appear to commemorate or document this time of the religious movement of the ghost dance. He’s historic paintings are in many colors and depict dancers and the return of animals and plants and the return of the dead. The paintings also document and portray the principal religious beliefs of now the participants in the movement which include a layered cosmos a depiction of the Thunderbird BighornSheep and other animals and a central white horse image. David Sucec is Director of the Barrier Canyon Style (BCS) Rock Art of Utah. BCS is one of the more remarkable rock art expressions in North America. It dates from as early as 7,000 to 2,000 years ago and is mainly a polychrome painted style. The patterned expressions adorn the dramatic canyons of the spectacular Utah topography. The images are haunting and consist of very small but many times very large images of decorated and "floating" spirit figures. Sucec has dedicated over 30 years to the proper recording of this world class rock art tradition through detailed photographic imaging. Tribal archaeologist Jeremy Freeman joins us on this episode of the Rock Art Podcast. Jeremy works with the standing rock Lakota Sioux tribe in North Dakota. He talks about the management of cultural resources on their 2,000,000 acre reservation. Jeremy is currently the tribal archaeologist for the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe. He also teaches classes in anthropology/archaeology at Sitting Bull College and on the weekends works as an interpretive guide at On-a-Slant Mandan Indian Village at Fort Abraham Lincoln State Park in Mandan, North Dakota. He is the founder and archaeological program coordinator for Archaeology Learning Group. He received his B.A. in anthropology at Heidelberg College and is an M.A. candidate in anthropology at Ball State University. He has worked as a professional archaeologist for over 20 years for cultural resource management firms, museums, universities, federal agencies, and non-profit research institutes throughout the U.S. He has taught classes at the collegiate level at Ball State University, Heidelberg College, and Owens Community College as well as classes for youth programs. He has a passion for archaeological public outreach and education and has been involved in the development and implementation of a variety of public outreach projects including: The Fallen Timbers Public Archaeology Project, the Archaeological Discovery Tour at Minnetrista Cultural Center, the Next Step Education through Archaeology Project, the Experiential Learning through Historical Archaeology Project, Shumla Archaeological Research & Education Center, and Archaeology Learning Group where is the founder and the Archaeological Program Coordinator. He is currently serving as a member of the Society for American Archaeology’s Public Education Committee which is a biannual elected position. He is currently working for California State Parks where he works in the Cultural Resources branch of the Resources Division. His research interests include: rock art documentation and conservation management, indigenous cosmologies, public archaeology, and mythology and the sacred landscape. At nearly a mile long Little Petroglyph Canyon contains 10s of thousands of individual rock art images. Both Chris and Alan have been there and Alan leads tours there every year. Steve Waller is an expert in the study of ArchaeoAcoustics. ArchaeoAcoustics is the study of sound in the prehistoric environment. Mr. Waller got his start in the caves of France while pursuing a passion for rock art study. One idea that Mr. Waller pursued was the idea that rock art was actually inspired by sound - specifically the sound in a cave.
