Rock art is one of those things that just captivates your attention. The ancient carvings, drawings, and paintings tell a story. Sometimes we can interpret what that story is and sometimes we can't. World renowned rock art expert, Dr. Alan Garfinkel joins APN founder Chris Webster and a cast of expert guests to talk about rock art: what is it, how do we know how old it is, who made it, and much more. Join us as we take you on a journey through space and time via pictures on rock.
We had some interviews fall through this week so we’re presenting you with an episode of The Archaeology Show. We think it’s mostly relevant but either way we hope you like it. Here’s the show description:
We're taking a deep dive on ancient writing on this episode! After talking about the recent deciphering of Linear Elamite on the last episode we just wanted more. We'll talk about what writing means and mention other undeciphered languages. In the last two segments we'll talk about first written scripts in China and Mesoamerica. And for members, we've got a cool bonus segment about a curious artifact found in Mexico in the 1990s.

In order to begin to understand the symbols we see on the rocks and the people that made them we need to understand their environment. Carlos Gallinger has spent a lifetime studying the habits of the Bighorn Sheep in order to understand the people that live with, and off, off them. For example, it’s not feasible to take down a Bighorn sheep ten miles from your family. You need to be where the sheep are and understand them. Native people had this ability and Carlos wants to understand that ability.

The Rock Art Podcast is taking a break this month, but, we’d love for you to find a new podcast to love! Here’s an episode from The Archaeology Show. We've got a few articles that are all over the place - literally - this week. The first is about a re-analysis of what was thought was an ancient harbor in Italy. Turns out there's more to it. Next we talk about, well, the prehistoric world in general as it pertains the role of women. As with everything, there's more to that story and it's way more complex than early researchers would have liked. Finally we have a story of massive cave art in a hard-to-access area in Alabama. The figures are massive and would have been difficult to see in their entirety. Interested in sponsoring this show or podcast ads for your business? Zencastr makes it really easy! Steve Waller is an expert in the study of ArchaeoAcoustics. ArchaeoAcoustics is the study of sound in the prehistoric environment. Mr. Waller got his start in the caves of France while pursuing a passion for rock art study. One idea that Mr. Waller pursued was the idea that rock art was actually inspired by sound - specifically the sound in a cave. What Mr. Waller found was that the acoustic impacts of a location on rock art happen more often than anyone could have suspected. ENCORE: On this episode we talk to Dr. Tirtha Mukhopadhyay about his career in rock art. From his homeland of Calcutta, India, to continued graduate studies in Texas, and his current research working out of Guanajuato University in Mexico. They take a deep dive into the mysteries surrounding the relationships of science and religion. Our guest scholar provides up to date thinking on how our minds process images and create emotions relating to our understanding of deities. We delve into just what rock art images mean and how they affect the emotional states of its viewers. Finally, we provide some working hypotheses on what those animal-human figures depicted in prehistoric rock art communicate in terms of their compound metaphors as shamans, ancestors, and deities. Albert Knight traces his associations with rock art studies throughout his lengthy career and focuses on the nature of discovery and the most remarkable sites he has had the joy of working on. Burro Flats in the Simi Valley of southern California in Los Angeles County is akin to the Chumash rock art painted pictograph traditions. The site exhibits polychrome paintings within a rock shelter that some believe are documentation of the oral traditions and ritual activities associated with the movements and timing of the sun. There is a sun dagger that appears at the solstice and pierces a concentric circle element. The elements have been interpreted as representing the various deities and their interactions as represented in the Native sacred narrative. Links California Rock Art Foundation Contact

The ghost dance was a revitalistic movement that was most popular in the 1870s and 1890s. The religious leaders of the ghost dance movement were religious specialists who dreamed a prophetic vision. That vision included that the world was to be remade over and that the dead would come back to life and the world would returnTo the way it was before your Americans entered their lands. To usher in that New World native people were to dance around dance for several days day and night and that by praying and dancing and singing this would bring in a new world of peace and prosperity. Anthropologist and archaeologist have identified about two dozen rock art sites that appear to commemorate or document this time of the religious movement of the ghost dance. He’s historic paintings are in many colors and depict dancers and the return of animals and plants and the return of the dead. The paintings also document and portray the principal religious beliefs of now the participants in the movement which include a layered cosmos a depiction of the Thunderbird BighornSheep and other animals and a central white horse image. David Sucec is Director of the Barrier Canyon Style (BCS) Rock Art of Utah. BCS is one of the more remarkable rock art expressions in North America. It dates from as early as 7,000 to 2,000 years ago and is mainly a polychrome painted style. The patterned expressions adorn the dramatic canyons of the spectacular Utah topography. The images are haunting and consist of very small but many times very large images of decorated and "floating" spirit figures. Sucec has dedicated over 30 years to the proper recording of this world class rock art tradition through detailed photographic imaging. Our discussion will focus on why has Barrier Canyon rock been so evocative and intriguing. We are honored to have Sucec share the story of his odyssey with BCS! Here's one that is a bit different. Did you know that Native California Indians were part of a basketry boom? From about 1890 to 1940 Native people produced some of the most spectacular basketry ever crafted in the world. These masterpiece baskets include imagery and embedded metaphor that is also recognized in our rock art record throughout California and the Great Basin. Gene Meieran one of the authors of an upcoming book by Sunbelt Press will be our guest to discuss how such a volume was created and the treasures produced by California Indians and where these artistic treasures can be seen. The interview will spotlight what it means to Native people to see their ancestors stories, photographs, and art showcased in such a magnificent visual feast! Tune in. Links California Rock Art Foundation Contact
