I saw a statistic recently, that stated 52% of young adults currently live with their parents. While that stat seems high it is not surprising. Intergenerational households are becoming more common, partly due to economic pressures and longer life spans.
When I was growing up, my parents and maternal grandparents’ houses were next door to each other. At times it felt as if we all lived under the same roof. I loved it! There were wonderful opportunities for bonding with my grandparents.
Sometimes, our intergenerational blending happened because our adult children moved back home with us including bringing their spouses and/or their own children too. Younger Milestone Divas such as those of us in our 50s, 60s and some 70s are sandwiched between the returning adult children and the aging parents who are not ready or don’t want to move to a senior living community or nursing home.
We may feel more confident and in control with our children, but what do we do when our parents want to live with us? That situation brings a whole new set of issues. Primarily, financial and logistical as well as emotional and social.

Childcare is a major expense for many families, so asking grandparents to babysit can ease the financial burden. Of course, there’s also the priceless benefits of giving grandparents and grandchildren more time to spend together so they can develop a closer relationship.
If you and your family are enjoying such an arrangement, you’re not alone. According to the American Grandparents Association, 72% of their members take care of their grandchildren on a regular basis and 13% say they are the primary caregivers.
While there are many advantages, there are also some potential pitfalls that you can avoid with proper planning. Here are some tips to help you create a safe and satisfying experience for you, your children, and your grandchildren.

Chances are that you don’t remember your first birthday. That special milestone when everyone around you were so excited just because you existed.
As the decades passed by, each one signified a special milestone. In your 20s you were probably happy to leave your teenage life and enter adulthood. In your 30s and 40s, career and family took center stage.
By the time you reach your 50s, 60s 70s and beyond, your milestones take on a totally different meaning. The Cup of Glo Podcast honors women aged 50 and older by using the reference Milestone Divas. Not solely because of a number, but because Milestone Divas love life and strive to live their lives out loud, every day!
Today somewhere and everywhere, there are Milestone Divas having birthdays. For those ladies who have already embraced their Milestone Diva status, today’s discussion is a gentle reminder for you. For those of you with some hesitation, know this, none of us can put time on hold or turn back the clock, we will continue to age, so we might as well have fun doing it.

Household budgets are strained and giving is more difficult than ever. Everyone is working with reduced resources and most of us feel as though we don't have enough to enjoy our own lives. The idea of giving may seem unreasonable. But maybe now, more than ever, is the best time to give. There is a power in giving.

You might dream of traveling, playing golf, or spending time with the grandchildren when you retire. You’re probably not dreaming about paying on your debt. Ideally, none of us would be worried about debt in our later years. The reality is that half of us will have debt in our retirement years.

Your scheduled retirement day has arrived. You are free to live your life full out NOW. Yes, it’s great to look forward to new adventures, to claim your bucket list items, or to simply exhale reveling in the ability to do nothing at all.
About a week before my last day at work, I was greeted with a surprise red carpet reception. My co-workers really laid it on. The carpet ran from the entrance to my suite of offices to my office door. There were balloons all around. I was presented with a tiara on pillow and a pageant-like sash, that read, “I’m Retired”. Wow! As if that wasn’t enough, my office was decorated with more balloons, streamers and other congratulatory items for a retiree. What a wonderful way to start the day!

Your milestones are significant events in your life. What is the most significant milestone for you? Milestones can be the beginning of something new or the ending of something accomplished.
On the Cup of Glo Podcast we celebrate women age 50 and older with a focus on happiness. We take it a step further by honoring the beginning of each decade from age 50 to 100 and we’re proud of each decade.

Aging, for many, includes becoming inactive and experiencing failing health. However, you can retain your vigor and enjoy a positive existence, if you wish.
To keep things upbeat we’ve categorized each decade between 50 and 100 with cute tags that are fun and easy to remember.

Increase your in-person interactions is the third key of our five keys to happiness in retirement.
You probably believe we are more connected today than at any other time in history. You are right! We are more connected in our ability to instantly find answers, chat with anyone anytime, and gather information.
However, as we become more connected through social media, video calling, and messaging we also feel increasingly lonely. So even though we may use technology to feel more connected, it may also lead us to feel lonelier. That’s the irony.

Besides your spouse and children some of the most satisfying connections you have are with your friends. We make our friends within the communities we share.
My relationships with 3 of my closest friends started in our work place. Arrie, Gail and I met while working at an insurance company over 44 years ago. Arrie and her husband are godparents for one of my sons. Teresa and I met while I was working at another company 32 years ago. These friendships are so dear to me that sometimes they overlapped and we all have many shared experiences beyond the work place.
In his book, Naked Retirement another friend, Robert Laura states, “During retirement, we all need human connections for physical, emotional and spiritual health. Yet, most pre-retirees don’t realize that once they retire, the luxury of running into and connecting with people they know will suddenly and dramatically change.”
You may agree with Robert, indeed I do.
We are social beings. We need to have connections with others. So many communities such as school, work and church provide connections by default. There is no good way that you could be there and not interact with others.
But, what happens after you graduate from school? Like so many you move on to other phases of your life. Even if you keep some of your school-based connections career building, marriage and family life generally takes over.

Yoohoo, you are about to retire from a job you’ve held for a couple of decades or more. Finally, you can go where you want, when you want, and you have enough money not to fret.
You’ve found that there are many articles, books, podcasts and other media that will discuss financial planning for retirement, but rarely will you find discussions of how to achieve happiness in retirement.
Planning for your emotional needs in retirement is just as important as planning for your financial needs, if not more. No worries, The Cup of Glo Podcast is here for you. For the next few episodes, we’re presenting our 5 keys to happiness in retirement series. The topics we will cover are:
Rather than Retire, Aspire and Inspire, Build Your Community, Communicate with at least One Person Daily, Develop Your Curiosity, Interests, and Passion, and Embrace Your Milestones
We will start with rather than retire, aspire and inspire.

Age like time can’t be controlled by the mere mortals that we are. We can reminisce about our days as young adults finding our way in the world, how much fun we had, and how supple our bodies were, but there is no way to go back.
Therefore, we might as well make every effort to enjoy our lives at every age.
Get excited about what you can look forward to. In my thirties and forties, I was driven to raise well-adjusted children and be successful in my career. I don’t regret that phase my life. What about you? What were you doing in your thirties and forties?
Tell the truth, whatever your quality of life then would you really want to repeat it now?
I don’t. It’s because of what I experienced then that I can enjoy what I’m doing now. In my sixties, I have so many choices, that every day is a new adventure!
How do you feel about someday turning sixty, seventy, or eighty? Perhaps you struggle to imagine yourself growing older. Maybe you’re not looking forward to your golden years. Aging, for many, includes becoming inactive and experiencing failing health. Yes, you may have some health issues however, you can maintain your zest for living and enjoy a positive existence, if you wish.

We hear a lot these days about the great resignation, where many people are leaving their jobs with no urgent need of replacing them. As well as many others are taking early retirement and traipsing off on wild adventures.
Do you wonder like I do how can they do that? Surely there aren’t that many Trust Fund Babies in our towns. Of course not.
Wouldn't it be great to have enough money to live your life to its fullest?
With a little bit of focus you can have enough money, if you're willing to plan and stick to a budget. A well-planned budget enables you to make financial decisions that support your happiness and peace of mind.

Since 1996 April has been designated as National Poetry Month by the Academy of American Poets.
Beyond rhythmic verses, metaphors, and sometimes flowery language, poetry can be beneficial in at least two ways. One is that poetry can help us improve our critical thinking skills as we try to understand what the author is telling us. Poetry encourages us to think of things from different points of view similar to many brain gym exercises that are designed to improve brain functions. Poetry is a fun way to keep our brains sharp.
A second way that poetry can be beneficial for you is its healing powers. Whether you are writing poetry yourself, reading or listening to someone else’s work, poetry can help us channel our emotions to get through stressful, traumatic or depressive situations.
You can celebrate National Poetry Month by writing a poem or two of your own, or You can attend a poetry event at your local library or neighborhood café. You may even try organizing one for friends, or Consider dusting off the books on your bookshelf and reading a few poems.
You may remember our former guests, Pat Stanford and Bobby Blackmon who are authors of books that contain poetry. In honor of National Poetry Month, we will share some of their works with you. For more information about Pat Standford go to: www.patstandford.com. For information about Bobby Blackmon go to wcblackmon.com.

Have you heard the quote: “No matter how slow you go you are lapping everybody on the couch?
Yes, this episode is about the dreaded E-word, exercise. If it helps for you to think of it as a friendlier M-word, movement then please make your plan, for moving about your health, feelings or mood versus losing weight or how you look. When your movement plan is about taking care of your body because you love your body and you want to maintain your body as well as you can for as long as you can then you’re doing it out of love. The real love for yourself…

Why Raise Your Expectations of Yourself?
If you're perfectly happy with your current situation in life, you might be wondering why you would want to raise your expectations. Well, when you expect more, you will drive yourself to achieve more.
Think about a time when you've expected nothing out of a situation. Chances are you weren't unhappy with the results because you didn't really care, but at the same time you probably weren't driven and fulfilled either.
While having greater expectations opens you up and makes you more vulnerable to failure, you can also have big rewards too. It's worth it in the end because a negative experience is still an experience that you can learn from. A positive experience may provide you with one of those life-defining moments that make you happy to be alive.

How do you see your life? Do you see yourself as a glass-half full person or a glass half empty person?
You’re a glass half full person if you view life positively and you seem to be upbeat all the time. Even if some people claim to be annoyed by your constant cheerfulness, they are indeed glad to be around you so they can feed off your joy.
You are a glass half empty person if negativity resides in your mind. Regardless of the situation, you will see the negatives. You will point out everything that went wrong and can continue to go wrong. Other people avoid you so you are frequently lonely.
Good news! Your outlook on life does not have to be categorized into one of two personality types such as the glass half full or the glass half empty type. You can easily improve your optimism level, open your mind, and have a happy life.
Being optimistic might seem like a large task, but there are simple things you can do to improve your outlook. If you practice each day, you'll be doing yourself a great favor, since your mind is the very foundation for achieving success and fulfillment.

Spring is the season of the year when we delight in seeing flowers. Spring is also associated with rebirth, rejuvenation, and renewal. We can start this new season with a new celebration. Milestone Divas Day! A very special day to honor women aged 50 and older who exhibit confidence, enthusiasm, and strength through their character and contributions to society.
(Applause)
Milestone Divas Day is celebrated the 3rd Saturday of March. You can celebrate by gathering with the Milestone Divas in your life, from a good meal to an outing at your local park. Who knows, you may run into another Milestone Diva and together you can recite the Milestone Divas Cheer:
Feisty, Sassy, Saucy are we
Exciting, Nifty, and Awesome you see
Every second, minute or hour
Bold, wise, owning our power
In tees and jeans or a fancy frock
Milestone Divas Rock!

Why is happiness more than just feeling good?
In addition to feeling good, happiness is also important to your health, success, and relationships.
Your happiness isn’t just important to you. It’s also important to your friends, family, and your employer.
Happy people are healthier. Happier people get sick less frequently and less severely on the average. A bad mood is bad for your immune system, too.
Happy people are less likely to suffer from anxiety and depression.
You don’t need major research studies to see some effects of happiness or unhappiness around you every day.

What is the most special relationship in your life?
Could it be the bond you have with your romantic partner?
I enjoy hearing stories of how couples met and how they make their relationships last through decades. We’ve had several guests on The Cup of Glo who shared cute relationship moments with us. Here are a few reminders for you.
We’ll start with a way to meet, from episode 40 with Kelly McGrath…
Once you’ve met your special someone you want to keep it going. In her episode of She Has a Story to Tell, Robin Collins told us about celebrating her Ruby anniversary. Talk about longevity! Wow!
In episode 51, we chatted with newlyweds Brenda and Skip Nelson, confirming that it is never too late to have happiness in your special relationship.
Has your special relationship moved beyond the marriage ceremony to blissful matrimony? I sure hope so.

Why is it so important for us to laugh, that there are actual careers dedicated to making us laugh?
A positive result of the pandemic is the explosion of the gig economy.
If you’re considering trying something non-traditional yet fun and helpful, consider making others laugh. Go to a comedy club and give the open mic a try, or perhaps you can lead a laughter yoga class, or you can join an improv group...

How many times have you sat around wishing your love relationship was better or that you were in a love relationship, at all?
Without the right attitude and beliefs, finding love will prove to be elusive. If you’ve been looking for love, but coming up short, you may need to examine your beliefs about relationships.
Your beliefs limit what you believe is possible. Your beliefs influence your actions. Think about your beliefs and consider how they impact your search for love.
Even if you have been guilty of non-supportive beliefs, you can change them to something positive.

Valentine’s Day is coming soon. All around you the focus is on relationships.
When you’re in a love relationship, it’s important to behave in ways that will help the relationship last. Holding hands together, looking into each other’s eyes, having special dates, and planning a get-away together are all wonderful ways to enhance romance in your life…

Like many people, you may experience times in your life when you're seeking something but are unsure what of what it is. Maybe you want to live a life that has purpose, reward and challenge or perhaps you desire more excitement.
Yes, your desires are extremely powerful and in fact create everything in your life! If you don’t allow yourself to want something then there is almost zero chance you will ever have it.
First, you need to start identifying what you want…and why you believe you would be happier if you get it. Will it really make you happy? Will you be fulfilled by it? The secret is that happiness can be short-term. However, when we can get beyond momentary happiness to fulfillment, we can ultimately achievement contentment, for the long term.

What does community mean to you?
Community is defined as a social unit with commonality such as norms, religion, values, customs, or identity. Communities may share a sense of place situated in a given geographical area or in virtual space through communication platforms. Think Facebook, LinkedIn, and Instagram.
We are social beings and need to be part of a community. In fact, many of us are actively engaged in more than one community, which is a good thing. How many distinct communities can you claim in your social network?
As you transition through various stages in your life such as a job change, divorce, widowhood, empty nest or retirement you may find that those changes also come with changes in people and things that were once familiar and comfortable but now, not so much. You may find yourself needing to expand your personal community rather than withdrawing inward. Your transition phases require a community of people for you to thrive.

We transitioned from the year 2021 featuring Dr. Sirretta Williams, Ms. Senior Jacksonville to the new year 2022 featuring LaVonda Williams, Ms Senior DIVA. Each woman demonstrated confidence, courage, and shared how her accomplishment helped to raise her self-confidence. While pageants may not be the path for you, there are several activities you can engage in to enhance your self-confidence.

Today our fantastic guest is LaVonda Williams!
In addition to being a wonderful mother of 3 children, LaVonda has served in the United States Marine Corps, she’s been a licensed child care provider offering free Voluntary Pre-Kindergarten (VPK) to children for 17 years, 10 of which were as the owner/operator of L & M’s Kidde Korner LLC, Early Learning Center, and she’s the owner of Vonda’s Beaded Boutique since 2015.
As if all of that wasn’t enough, LaVonda is Ms. Senior DIVA 2021 with a goal to raise awareness about Alopecia Areata. Alopecia is the medical term for hair loss that results in thinning or baldness. Alopecia Areata causes the body’s immune system to attack hair follicles, leading to patches of baldness most commonly found in the scalp. It can occur at any age but is most prevalent in teenagers and young adults. LaVonda said, “God has given me an opportunity; he is allowing me to be the voice of those not ready to come from under the hat, scarf, wig along with the fear of being judged.”

Once again, we have an amazing guest. Dr. Sirretta Williams is a pastor, counselor, community advocate, author, and mother of two adult children: retired professional football player Laveranues Coles and celebrity hair stylist and image consultant, Rashetta Law. Among her most prized titles is grandmother to her eight grandchildren.
She has appeared on the Oprah Winfrey Show, traveled globally participating in fundraisers with the National Professional Football Players Mothers Association, and as a chaplain for several years.
Additionally, Dr. Williams is Ms. Senior Jacksonville 2021. She has a goal of raising awareness of mental health, bad behavior amongst youth and seeking alternatives to assist challenged youth as opposed to medication.

Average thinking and actions lead to average results. They also lead to average levels of confidence. It would be nice to just have confidence without doing anything to deserve feelings of confidence, but that’s a tough trick to pull off. You can take a few simple steps to raise your standards and gain higher levels of confidence…

Since we were children, most of us learned that it could be advantageous to make others happy. Most children want the approval of their parents, teachers, and peers. We tend to carry that same tendency into adulthood. While it’s natural to seek the approval of others, sometimes it might not be for the best.
Being a strong and free person includes the ability to move freely through the world without excessive concern about the opinions of others. Think about the people you respect the most. Do they allow the opinions of others to dictate their decision? You can live the same way.
If a change you are trying to make isn’t working, it may be because you are trying to change the wrong thing. You are probably doing the things and creating desires because you think you “should” and not because you really want to. You’re probably doing it because someone else thinks it’s what is best, or in order to please someone. Making decisions based on what others think is giving away your power.
Living on your own terms and understanding your own desires is how you can own your power.

Have you ever noticed that there are certain people who seem to be happy all the time? It seems like stressful situations just bounce off them and that they always seem to see the positive even in negative situations.
It’s your natural state to be in joy, however it’s often covered up by limiting beliefs and programming. Happiness is a choice.
Our discussion today, will focus on the big picture of 6 elements of happiness that need to be addressed to create lasting happiness. In future episodes, we’ll dive deeper into some of these elements of happiness, which may give you a strong foundation to creating the happiness that you desire—no matter what!

Which paid holiday off work do you or did you enjoy the most?
Why is that?
There are so many holidays for us to celebrate. Some are serious, some are religious, and some are just oh so festive, for us to spend time and money. In November a working person has the potential of 3 paid days off work. Veteran’s Day, Thanksgiving, and the Day after Thanksgiving. Even though they are somber observances, you can add a few extra days before or after and make November your season of relaxation and reflection.
As fun as that may be, you don’t have to wait for specific days on the calendar. You can follow the Cup of Glo mantra, “celebrate each day and spread happiness your way.” One way to do that may be to create your own day of observance. You can make it up and keep it as your secret, for as long as, you’re happy doing it. You can share your made-up holiday with as many people as you want and do it as often as you want. You can have Wacky Hat Wednesdays where you and a few friends meet for lunch on Wednesdays wearing the Wackiest hats ever. You could decide that the Monday before Thanksgiving is special for you. It doesn’t have to be rational in fact the sillier it is the more it is likely to be more fun!

How do you define self-sufficiency?
The Merriam Webster Dictionary defines it as, able to maintain oneself without outside aid or capable of providing for one’s own needs.
We may encounter a situation or two in our lives with the need for help. Our requests may take many forms such as help with money to pay rent, help with babysitting after an emergency at work or help with a flat tire. Each of those requests seem quite benign, but you may find it difficult to ask for help for fear of being denied, even worse there’s the embarrassment of letting someone else know that you are not self-sufficient.
You will hear stories about Susie, Linda, and Sylvia. Each story is an extreme example of negative results associated with asking or giving help, in moments of need. Most of us would prefer to be self-sufficient in every way at all times. However, that is not what happens everyday. Rich politicians ask for your donations and your vote. Employers ask their employees to provide good customer service to help keep their businesses open. On the other hand, giving can fill your heart with joy and be a blessing to someone. Imagine volunteering at a food distribution center. Mentoring at-risk youth or spending time chatting with your elderly neighbor on a Sunday morning.
Lessons from the pandemic has taught us that going it alone is not sustainable for long periods of time. We humans need each other. You may need money, or a place to live. You may only need conversation or a hug. Whatever, you need on any given day, please know it is possible to be self-sufficient and ask for help when you need it.

COVID 19 really impacted our feelings of belongingness!
While we were able to ZOOM ourselves to video conferencing fatigue, nothing could replace the joy of face-to-face interactions. Especially, if touch was involved.
Who knew how much we would miss a personal greeting with a kiss on the cheek or a hug. Touch deprivation is a horrible thing!
On the other hand, when our world started to open again, we were flooded with gratitude over the ability to do simple things, such as meet a couple of friends for lunch or spend an afternoon with grandchildren.
What did you do the first time you left home after the lock down? Email me at gloria@cupofglo.com and let me know.
It’s amazing that a year ago we were watching professional tennis with no fans in the stands and now we can see packed stadiums for both college and professional football games. Many people are there for their individual love of football, yet others are there because of the warm feeling of belonging.

What is your “go to” song, that helps you to keep your enthusiasm flowing?
One of my favorite songs is, “Give Your Baby a Standing Ovation” by The Dells.
Whenever I need a little boost of energy, I go to my playlist and play this song for as many times as it takes to lift me up. This song came out in 1973. The same year that I graduated high school. Remember your high school years? Especially, senior prom, senior trip, and dates with your special boyfriend. Nostalgia is a beautiful thing.
Give Your Baby a Standing Ovation advises a man to honor the special woman in his life. Imagine the feeling of love and respect when your man stands up and applauds you. What a confidence boost, because you are amazing!

What can we do to make our lives better? We can start with being kind to ourselves.
You may have spent a good amount of time being kind to others including your spouse, your kids, other family members, friends and co-workers. You get the idea. Along the way you may have forgotten that you need kindness too. You need to be kind to yourself.
Today we’ll discuss 5 ways to kind to yourself.
Remember your flaws give you style and personality. Accept that rejection proves you’re doing something courageous. Life is too short to “should” on yourself. Find your Spark Team of people who think you’re awesome, and Be Bold – Live your life your way!

Sue Healy is a 73-year-old belly dancer. That may seem incongruous, but Sue says, “I don't care. I am not wasting any time getting on with my life.”
Tallahassee has been her home since she came to Florida State University as a freshman 56 years ago. Sue grew up on a small farm near the edge of the Everglades, in Miami. Her mother taught her to draw and be self-reliant. Her father taught her how things worked and how to write. In addition to being a dancer, I she is a painter, a gardener, a writer, an editor, and most importantly, she is fearless.
Sue’s strengths helped save her when she was diagnosed with metastatic cancer three years ago. She had a horrendous surgery, daily chemo and radiation and spent two months in the hospital. When she could not walk, she dreamed of dancing again and made it happen. The day she was discharged she went to the gym with her hot pink glitter walker and climbed on the treadmill.
Sue said, “Cancer taught me how many friends I have, how to let go of pride and accept help, what is really important, and how strong my mind and faith really are.”
Sue’s outlook on life is be healthy, happy and strong and embrace change as another metamorphosis.

Last week was so packed with information from Chynell Jefferson, that we had to have a second episode.
Chynell’s aim is to make the planning process as less stressful as possible and offer guidance through the entire process-before, during and after travel. She is passionate about encouraging others to travel now while their health is good and not wait for the “official retirement date”, which is just delaying the amazing memorable experiences.

A few months ago, over a period of 5 weeks, we published a series called, 5 Keys to Happiness in Retirement. Based on the feedback we received, we decided to provide you with an abridged version of the 5 Keys regardless of your retirement status. You may consider yourself too young to think about retirement, or you’re thinking about retirement and started planning or you’re well into retirement but can appreciate a few pointers anyway.
Happiness is the best state of being for all of us.
Have you ever noticed that there are certain people who seem to be happy and in control all the time? It seems as if stressful situations bounce off them rather than knock them down. Do you want to be one of them?

How many women do you know with the deep understanding of their faith as well as with the ability to communicate their knowledge with us in a comfortable and easy manner?
In honor of Women’s History Month, we’re exploring various positions women hold in church leadership. I grew up in a Baptist Church and as child I was accustomed to seeing only men as pastors of the churches in my local area. Times have certainly changed. It is now commonplace for women to be pastors of churches.
It is my honor to discuss some of the leadership roles of women in churches, with our guest Pastor Doris Simpson, from Polished After the Furnace International Ministries, located at 1230 Blountstown Street, Tallahassee FL
Pastor Simpson was born and raised in Perry Fl. She is the mother of five and grandmother to two. She was called into ministry in 2003 as a Prophetess. In 2018, she was given the vision for Polished After the Furnace International Ministries.
Additionally, she is the owner of: CosMe The Experience (hair salon), Paideia Academy (private school), and Accurate Collection (drug screening).

After her divorce in 1987, she was engaged a couple of times during her journey to meeting the love of her life, her second and last husband, Skip Nelson. When did you mark your last milestone? What was it?
Your milestones are significant events in your life. While there is no special time for any milestone what is important is, what you are marking something of interest. It could be the beginning of something new or the ending of something accomplished.
On the Cup of Glo Podcast we celebrate women age 50 and older with a focus on happiness. We take it further by honoring the beginning of each decade from age 50 to 100 and we’re proud of each decade. The Feisty 50s Milestone Diva is full of energy, confident, playful, and ready for any adventure! The Sassy 60s Milestone Diva does her thing without regrets loud and proud! The Saucy 70s Milestone Diva continues where sassy left off and going strong! The Exciting 80s Milestone Diva knows that the good days are not over. She still has a zest for life and is happy to share it! The Nifty 90s Milestone Diva moves to her heart’s content. She may be more relaxed, but she has not stopped yet! The Awesome 100s Milestone Diva can do whatever she pleases. Anything she does is an inspiration for the rest of us.
Overall, you are a Milestone Diva if you are bold, confident, enthusiastic, and love living life all out!
Another Milestone for the Cup of Glo Podcast is publishing our 50th episode today!
When we launched the show in March 2020, we were hopeful that we would reach 5 episodes. Look at us now, ten times greater!

Feisty, Sassy, Saucy are we, Exciting, Nifty, and Awesome you see,

In tees and jeans or a fancy frock, … Milestone Divas Rock!
Are you waiting for our intro question for today?
If you’ve listened to more than 2 episodes of The Cup of Glo Podcast then you know that we always start with a theme related question.
Drumroll…
The question for today is: How do you serve?
It is not important what you know or how new you are to the service you provide. What is important is what you share with others to help them grow.
On this podcast, we always provide opportunities to recognize and celebrate birthdays with our listeners by offering a fun story or fun birthday trivia. Today’s birthday trivia is:
Marilyn Monroe's, “Happy Birthday, Mr President,” tribute is the most famous, birthday song rendition ever!

When was the last time you felt joyful? What have you done recently that’s contributed to your happiness?
Babs Plunkett is a passionate advocate for positive aging. To help herself and others live joyfully, she became a Life Coach and Certified Professional Retirement Coach. As the best-selling author of Choose Joy: Three Keys to Investing Your Time in Retirement, she interviewed over 100 people across the country, gaining their inspiration and insights on positive aging.
Babs said, “The original source of my passion for aging well was my crabby grandma who moved in with us when I was 13 years old and her unhappy presence made a lifelong impression on me.”
For the next four decades, Babs studied positive aging and paid attention to people who chose joy. She asked those who were living joyfully if they had always been that way. Were they upbeat as a kid or did they decide to be positive? Babs has indicated that she felt genuine relief to learn we’re not destined to crabbiness. Aging well is a choice. We can choose joy.
You can get more information about Babs Plunkett and Choose Joy at https://babsplunkett.com/choosejoy

She has poetry published in several anthologies and won second place in the 2004 Seven Hills Contest with her short story, Divorce Sale. After being introduced to growing roses by her father, Pat created her own rose garden. She served as President of the local rose society and is a bronze medal recipient with the American Rose Society.
Pat lives in Tallahassee, Florida with her husband and a quirky cat, and is currently working on a follow-up to Fixing Boo Boo as well as a novel set in Mongolia. Kelly McGrath Law is here to help you. Let’s Get You Some Financial Peace!
If you’re barely able to pay your bills, or if you’re falling behind, you’re not alone and it’s not your fault. The country is going through a crisis and we want you to feel supported.
You can get out of this financial struggle with help and you do not have to shoulder this alone. Family and friends are often more understanding than you might think!
Talk to those you love and share the burden of your financial stress. And if you’re depressed or thinking of suicide, call the National Suicide Prevention Hotline at 1-800-273-8255. This struggle is temporary and there are places you can go to help with your financial burden.
If the amount you owe has become an overwhelming burden in your life, here’s how filing for bankruptcy gives you a fresh start and lets you breathe again:
Bankruptcy is a legal process that can wipe out or restructure many of your debts. Your current income level determines what kind of bankruptcy you qualify for. Either your unsecured debt is forgiven (Chapter 7 Bankruptcy), or restructured on manageable, low-interest terms (Chapter 13 Bankruptcy). Filing immediately protects assets you depend on such as your home and the vehicle you need. Bankruptcy also protects your wages from being garnished by any credit card companies After bankruptcy is complete, credit for high-ticket necessities can become available as quickly as within 3 months. Mortgages no later than 4 years.
Here’s what you need to know about repossession:
The state can legally repossess a vehicle after just ONE delinquent payment. The creditor does NOT have to notify you or take you to court to repossess your vehicle. They can just come get your car anytime if you’re behind on payments, without notice.
Here’s the deal with falling behind on your house payment:
A mortgage lender has to file a lawsuit to begin foreclosure. The homeowner will receive a summons if this happens, and they’ll have 20 days to respond before the foreclosure happens.
If you’re struggling to make ends meet, get support - call for a free consultation about your debt

What are some indicators of wealth you had growing up?
A friend asked me that question recently.
At first, I thought It’s all about money, Millions and billions of dollars. If you define wealth as living in a mansion, owning a private jet and having a personal banker at your beck and call then my family was definitely not wealthy. If you describe wealth as having enough food and clothing, comfortable housing, and loving parents then I experienced wealth growing up as well as continued the happy family life with my own kids. The reality is, that your interpretation of wealth is unique to you.
Think about your ideas about money when you were in your twenties or thirties compared to your fifties and sixties. The amount of cash, also known as money, is the greatest measure of success, wealth, and a fabulous life in our society. However, counting your cash, flaunting it or even hording it does not guarantee happiness or fulfillment.
For that, you need to build relationships with family and friends, find hobbies and interests to explore or purpose your purpose. Spend your retirement years using your cash to enjoy the life it can provide. Ask yourself, how can I serve rather than how much cash do I have?

Ray Lewis is attributed with the quote:
“Before anything great is really achieved, your comfort zone must be disturbed.”
Are you cheating yourself or holding yourself back due to fear or getting too comfortable? As you move through your 2nd or 3rd Act or 4th Quarter, open yourself to change, try new things, get out of your comfort zone.
The following are two quotes from anonymous, for your consideration:
“By leaving your comfort zone behind and taking a leap of faith into something new, you find out who you are truly capable of becoming.”
“Feel the fear and do it anyway.”

Have you ever noticed that certain people seem to be content and in control all the time? It seems as if stressful situations bounce off of them rather than knock them down. Even in retirement they appear happy, joyful and free. It’s never too late for you to have contentment in your life as well.
First, you need to start identifying what you want… and why you believe you will be happier if you have it. Will it really make you happy? Or will you just get it, have a temporary period of happiness, and then start desiring something else? After you identify your desires, the next step is to find out if they are YOUR desires or if you’ve been programmed to think you want them.
The good news is you have a choice. Happiness is a choice! You can learn to control your emotions so you can feel good NOW, no matter what's going on in your life. I know, this sounds really hard. When things are going on around you that are painful or scary or stressful, it can be hard to find your footing and remember that there are things you can do to be happy in the moment while creating contentment for the longer term.

Imagine, the clock reads, 11 pm, when you answer your cellphone. You’re startled. Your heart is pounding in your chest. In your head, “OMG!” you answer, “Is everything okay?” Your adult son replies, Yeah, everything is okay. He laughs, you relax and he continues, you’re so busy that your own child has to wait until bedtime to just say hello.
Some of you may think that a call just to say hello at 11pm is a problem. I say, it’s a good problem to have when you’re transitioning from pre-to post retirement. That says that you were out and about doing interesting and hopefully new things.
In Episode 32 we discussed cultivating community for your social well-being in retirement. Another step as you go from pre to post retirement is to celebrate curiosity, that will lead you to new discoveries and a new you.
Once you retire and the outward trappings of what you did and who you were while doing it go away, you must find other ways of presenting yourself and getting the validation you need.
Look at it as, you’re now a clean slate. You can start over and be whoever you want and do whatever you want. You may even find your true self and like yourself so much that change is not an option. You can now release your inner artist, dancer, jewelry designer, author, singer, small business owner, foster parent or fulfilled grandparent.
Post-retirement is the best time to celebrate curiosity. You now have the time and money to experiment with the various interests and projects that you’ve previously set aside in deference to work.
You may overlap the steps of cultivating community and celebrating curiosity as you re-frame your identity.

Imagine, that you’re taking a break from checking your morning email when you notice the retirement countdown clock, at the corner of your desk. The clock was a joke from one of your actively retired friends, 2 years earlier. At this moment the clock reads, 665 Days, 7 Hours, 30 Minutes and 40 Seconds. You’re suddenly in a state of panic.
Financially, you’re good to go. All annuities are sufficiently funded, your Social Security strategy is in place, and your checking, savings and emergency fund accounts are just where you want them. Dave Ramsey, Chris Hogan and Suze Orman would have no issues with you. However, you’ve neglected to plan your transition from pre-retirement to post-retirement activities. What are you going to do? How are you going to feel the first morning after the giddiness of your retirement party has worn off and you wake up with freedom from your alarm clock, a morning commute or even a scheduled team meeting? You are not alone.

Did you know that the number one benefit of wearing cosmetics is the feeling of confidence they provide?
Confidence has been described as an attribute that most people would love to possess. Whether its confidence in someone else, to do something that would result in a positive outcome or self-confidence, where our own state of mind leads to feelings of well-being and belief in our own abilities. In episode 21, our guest Olivia Jones, beauty consultant extraordinaire, told us that during times of distress, sales of cosmetics, cigarettes and alcohol increase. I was intrigued by that statement and embarked on a bit of research. Lo and behold, Olivia was correct. There is a phenomenon called The Lipstick Effect.
I can personally attest to more online spending during the novel Corona virus pandemic. I’ve purchased Cherries Jubilee lipstick from Avon, https://www.avon.com/myavon/lmj4000 Red Stiletto lipstick from Mary Kay, https://www.marykay.com/oajones as well as several packets of Nail Polish strips, from Color Street, www.colorstreet.com/JerriJeanHeywood
While researching the Lipstick Effect on the economy I stumbled upon a book, titled, Don’t Forget Your Lipstick, Girl: Sister to Sister Secrets of Gaining Confidence, Courage and Power by Dr. Marilou Ryder and Jessica Thompson, and bought that too!

We’re continuing our celebration of the love of reading and writing from National Book Lover’s Day on August 9th through National Author’s Day on November 1st. Today it is my privilege to present my conversation with Sharon Schwerzel.
Sharon is a fourth generation Floridian who grew up in Tampa where she was able to run around barefoot, play on the nearby beaches, camp in parks and national forests before the modern-day camping and RV revolution, and she participated in the Girl Scouts. She earned her bachelor of science and Master of science degrees at Florida State University. She taught chemistry at a local high school in Tallahassee, Florida and in the freshman program at Florida State.
Along the way Sharon found a summer job in the library at FSU and started off in a new direction, earning a Master of Science degree in Library Science at San Jose State University. Later she’s worked at several well- known university libraries including Cornell University, Stanford University, Ohio State University and Florida State University. In over 40 years in academic libraries she’s proud of her opportunity to teach, help create an online catalog, beta test science databases, see the growth of electronic journals and books, help design a library renovation, help move 2 libraries and be part of building a library.
Sharon’s interest in ethnic dance provided her with more opportunities to perform with 4 different dance groups and teach hula and exercise classes at various locations around Tallahassee.
An avid reader since childhood, Sharon has read mostly fiction, widely on the topics of business and psychology, and is now exploring her growing interest in Florida history.

September has more to offer than Labor Day.
For those of us who are still working and the rest of you who can only remember your days of employment, the first Monday in September, which is Labor Day is/was a welcomed day to behold. It’s the first national paid day off after a long spell since Independence Day in July. Also, by Labor Day, football season for all levels, pros, college, high school and more are in full force. Bringing with it tailgate parties, fans wearing team jerseys and other apparel representing their team of choice, socializing and most importantly celebrations.
Since the novel Corona virus COVID 19 and social distancing have entered our lives, we’ve had to modify our celebrations. Luckily, September is loaded with days of observances that we can enjoy with or without others around. Here are five of them, in chronological order for your consideration, although none are paid days off like Labor Day, one or two may spark your interest.
National Grandparents Day is always celebrated on the first Sunday after Labor Day. This year it’s today, September 13th.. The purpose of the day is to honor grandparents, give them an opportunity to show love for their grandchildren and help children become aware of the strength, information, and guidance older people can offer.
9/18 – Bright Pink Lipstick Day is a fundraiser run by The Pink Hope Charity, in Australia, to bring awareness to breast and ovarian cancer.
9/21 - World Gratitude day is about being thankful and showing appreciation.
9/30 - National Women’s Health & Fitness Day focuses on the importance of regular physical activity and health awareness for women.
9/30 - International Podcast day celebrates the power of podcasting.

Sharing enthusiasm for each other is always our focus. While it may be difficult in this moment of the novel Coronavirus (COVID-19) happy days are possible. In this episode we discuss having the power to never surrender.
Imagine you’ve participated in a competition with nine other contestants…When the results were revealed:
3rd place…was not you,
2nd place…was not you,
1st place…was not you.
What are the feelings you may have experienced?
Abject failure, devastating disappointment or momentary set-back?
There are lessons that can be learned from failures, disappointments and set-backs. The primary lesson is to never surrender.
If you surrender to failure you stop learning and growing, which are not good options. Milestone Divas never surrender. When life’s challenges come our way, we face them head on, we embrace them but, we never…surrender!

Sharing enthusiasm for each other is always our focus. While it may be difficult in this moment of the novel Coronavirus (COVID-19) happy days are possible. In this episode we discuss choices about hair.
Remember when you were a little girl and styled your own hair for the first time? Some of you may also have memories of a rebellious phase when your hair was dyed various shades of primary colors. Such is the power of hair.
We can define so many phases of our lives through our hair. During our novel Corona virus COVID-19 shut down and our social distancing state of being many of us have gone gray whether we wanted to or not.

In this episode Vickie Goodman shares wisdom with us.
Vickie Goodman who like many of us has a varied and interesting life. She’s a mother, grandmother and business woman. Family is a major aspect of her life including being a contractor with her son and having the life’s rewards of raising a special needs child along with several other loving and well-rounded children.
Vickie is a Life Long Learner who’s been active in Toastmasters International local clubs in Tallahassee for about 30 years. She also enjoys participating in a variety of educational opportunities through Florida State University’s Osher Lifelong Learning Program, the Senior Center and other things that spark her interest.
Vickie likes to know the what, why and how of things and enjoy taking on new challenges or participating in classes or activities about which she knows very little just to increase her personal knowledge.
She’s the only female construction contractor I know. This is extra special because she’s doing it with her son. Vickie said it’s fun because it involves a lot of problem solving. While she’s less inclined to do the actual physical work, she loves knowing how to do it or how things work. Vickie also enjoys reading and writing and especially loves creating educational, motivational and inspirational presentations for a variety of audiences.
