Hi I’m Madeleine and this is the Wannabe Podcast. I believe that in order to keep a growth mindset, we need to continue learning like a wannabe. I will be interviewing great people doing great things- digging into how they got to where they are now.
Navigating a faith change can be difficult for those choosing to change their belief systems. Madeline, as heard from previous episodes, bravely shares her story and gives me better perspective on how I can be a better friend and show up for loved ones who go through similar experiences.
Talking about faith changes is important to me because there is often pain involved. Brene Brown said, "My mom taught us to never look away from people's pain. The lesson was simple. Don't look away. Don't look down. Don't pretend to not see hurt. Look people in the eye. Even when their pain is overwhelming. And when you're in pain, find the people who can look you in the eye. We need to know we're not alone -- especially when we're hurting."
The truth is faith institutions are run by human beings who need Jesus just as much as everyone else. We cannot assume an institution is immune to creating harm in anyway. It's important to look the pain in the eye, so that we can support, help, and change. Otherwise, by sweeping the pain under the rug and it only grows.

Emily Hatch Manwaring graduated from BYU with a degree in Family Life Sciences. She was diagnosed with Endometriosis as a teenager and has been an an advocate for the disease since. Endometriosis is estimated to affect 1 in 10 women and “a general lack of awareness by both women and health care providers, due to a “normalisation” of symptoms, results in a significant delay from when a woman first experiences symptoms until she eventually is diagnosed and treated” (Endometriosis.org). Endometriosis can cause infertility, however with early treatment this can often be avoided. On July 30, 2020 Congresswoman Abby Finkenauer fought to double the federal endometriosis funding, and the House of Representatives passed it.
