A Catechesis on the Human Person and Gender Ideology Written by the Most Rev. Michael F. Burbidge, Bishop of Arlington

View Details

Continuing on the same path which Monsignor Pope started, Therese led couples in a reflection on the practical matters of praying together. Her talk included considerations of places in the home for prayer, the intimacy of joining in prayer, saying each other’s names in prayer, turning to the Cross, and much more.

On Saturday, October 20, 2018, couples throughout the Catholic Diocese of Arlington cast out into the deep to enrich their already profound relationships with God and their fiancé/es or spouses. The Communication and Prayer Workshop was at the Church of the Nativity in Burke, VA, from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. The event began with Holy Mass and featured talks on expression and understanding, a Q&A, and time for prayer. Speakers included Msgr. Charles Pope of the Archdiocese of Washington, Thérèse Bermpohl, Executive Director of the Office of Marriage, Family and Respect Life of the Diocese of Arlington, and Mary Lynn Dixon, Prayer and Healing Ministry Leader.

Before considering ways to pray as a couple, Monsignor Pope gave a refreshing talk on the nature of prayer. With reference to Scripture and the writings of the saints, Monsignor unpacked for couples the meaning of prayer as an attentive conversation with God and the Our Father as a structure for “filial” prayer.

Poverty: When one marries, one does not just give up a certain pursuit of material things; rather, in marriage, one’s very life is opened up, shared with, and indeed given to the other. A spirit of poverty in marriage takes the form of giving up one’s own desires for the sake of the common good.

On Saturday, July 7 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Holy Trinity parish, in Gainesville, Fr. Paul Scalia, Episcopal Vicar for Clergy, hosted a Retreat Day for Married Couples.

220 couples attended the enriching and reflective day, which included talks, Adoration, confession, spiritual time spent with the spouse, and concluded with Mass.

Fr. Scalia gave talks on poverty, chastity and obedience (the three evangelical counsels of the consecrated life), and how they exist analogously in marriage. These vows are, of course, typically made by religious in community, though they are present in an analogous way in marriage.

The Sacrament of Marriage is not merely a reflection of the love of Christ for the Church, but is more importantly a grace which endows spouses with the gift of perfect worship: receiving Jesus in his poverty, chastity and obedience.

Chastity: For a religious brother or sister, chastity means total abstinence. For the married couple, chastity means a purity of heart and action: married love is total and free, which means that it must be exclusive. Even within this relationship, the deep union between husband and wife must be generous and never self-seeking.

Obedience: Just as a religious takes a vow of obedience to his provincial, so do husband and wife make a vow to submit to each other (always in their distinctly masculine or feminine way), for the sake of their one flesh union. For husbands, this means being intimately involved, withstanding the temptation to be distant. For wives, this means respecting the headship of the man, foregoing the temptation to be too much in control.

TRANSCRIPT:

Hi, I'm father Brendan Bartlett from the Diocese of Arlington Today we celebrate the Second Sunday in Ordinary Time And our Gospel story shows us how that most frequently people come to know Jesus Christ through the intervention of another We see in the story of John the Baptist introducing Andrew to Jesus Christ and he goes and spends the day with Him following that Andrew goes and finds his brother Simon Peter and tells him that they found the Messiah and he is introduced to Jesus Christ So we see that these men came to Jesus through the intercession or intervention of another So I think it's important for us to think back in our lives about who it was that brought us to Jesus Christ who it was that introduced us to Jesus Christ and be thankful for them If that hasn't happened to think maybe "Is this the opportunity for you to come to know Jesus Christ?" But the flip side of that and perhaps more important is for us to think about who we have brought to Christ who we have introduced to Jesus Christ in our lives Are we evangelizing by the witness of our lives? Do we do so directly? How is it that we are that tool to bring Jesus Christ into the lives of others? So my challenge for you this week would be to think about that and to ask yourself "How effective an instrument am I in bringing Jesus Christ to other people?"

Third Sunday of Advent (Year B)

View Details

On Monday, December 18, Fr. Christopher Vaccaro, Chaplain at University of Mary Washington, gave a reflection at the diocesan Chancery Advent Day of Prayer.

“We must let the Lord interrupt our lives. In that very interruption, we are able to encounter those who must enter our lives.”

Thresholds Fr. Vaccaro spoke of how in both the parish and campus ministry he encouraged his staff to view the threshold of the office with new eyes. These can and should be places of joyful encounter with visitors who often come to the Church because of a birth, baptism, marriage or other significant event. What are the thresholds in our offices and ministries which need to be brought to prayer and perhaps renewed, refocused, and improved?

Interruptions Fr. Vaccaro described how the Lord often breaks into our busy schedules through interruptions. In this sacred Season of Advent, we also reflect on how the Lord has willed to enter into our lives through the birth of His Son. In what ways can we make our daily schedules and routines more open to the interruptions and encounters the Lord desires us to have?

Failures In his reflection, Fr. Vaccaro spoke of how hostility, opposition, fear of failure and a “we have always done it this way” approach can prevent us from thinking in new and creative ways. We must propose fresh ways of spreading the Good News even if this results in a perceived failure from time to time. In what ways might the Lord be calling you in your work for the Diocese to propose a new approach to serving others?

"My Mother Wears Combat Boots: Mary in Spiritual Warfare"

Fr. Louis Merosne

Father Louis Merosne is madly in love with the Trinity, the Blessed Mother, and the Catholic Church. Born in Haiti, he moved to Boston in 1993. He studied French, philosophy, and theology at Franciscan University from 2002 to 2007. Ordained in 2011, he now serves in Haiti in the Diocese of Anse-à-Veau and Miragoâne under Bishop Pierre-André Dumas. He cannot adequately express in words the gift that is the priesthood. Preaching the good news of Jesus Christ is both a duty and passion for him. His perpetual prayer intention is to be a saintly priest.

Fr. Jack was on sabbatical in Rome about a year ago and will share stories from his trips abroad. How is your life like a pilgrimage?

Biography: Father Jack Peterson, Y.A., is the Director of Development for Youth Apostles, a Catholic community of single, married, and consecrated laymen and consecrated clerics who are dedicated to the service of young people. He entered Youth Apostles as a layman in 1981 and has held several leadership posts in the community, including serving for 12 years as the General Director.

Fr. Daniel Mode, Division Director of Plans and Operations for the Chaplain Corps for the United States Navy

"The Life of Fr. Capodanno, The Grunt Padre"

Commander Daniel L. Mode earned his undergraduate degree in Philosophy in 1988 at the Pontifical College Josephinum in Columbus, Ohio. He then attended Mount Saint Mary’s University in Emmitsburg, Maryland, and graduated in 1992 with Master’s Degrees in History and Theology. His History Master’s thesis on the life and heroics of Navy Chaplain Fr. Vincent Capodanno was eventually transformed into a popular biography, known as The Grunt Padre. It became the catalyst for his many public speaking engagements regarding the life of Fr. Capodanno and the Navy Chaplain Corps.

Fr. Mode was ordained a Roman Catholic priest in May 1992 for service in the Diocese of Arlington, Virginia. His subsequent pastoral assignments included: Associate Pastor of a 12,000 member parish in Fairfax Station (1992-1996), Vice-Principal of Bishop O’Connell High School in Arlington (1996-2001), and Pastor of Queen of Apostle’s Parish in Alexandria (2001-2005).

Chaplain Mode began his military service in September 1988 as a Chaplain Candidate Program Officer, with the rank of Ensign. Concurrent with his seminary training in preparation for ordination to the Roman Catholic priesthood, he served at a variety of on-the-job Navy training assignments.

Promoted to Lieutenant Junior Grade in 1998, Chaplain Mode accepted a superseding appointment to the Reserve Component of the United States Navy. During his nine years of reserve time he drilled at Bethesda Naval Hospital (1998-1999) and at the Office of the Chief of Navy Chaplains (2000-2003). In January 2004, Chaplain Mode began drilling with MEFREL 106, in direct support to Marine Corps Base Quantico, VA. From May 2005 to March 2007, he was mobilized for service in Operation Enduring Freedom, attached to the Commander, Joint Task Force 76 in Bagram, Afghanistan. As a supervisory chaplain there, he coordinated the ministry of seventeen US and coalition chaplains in providing pastoral care to more than 30,000 soldiers in over 50 forward operating bases.

In June of 2007, CDR Mode was assessed to the Active Component of the United States Navy and was assigned to USS HARRY S. TRUMAN (CVN 75). He completed a seven-month deployment to the Persian Gulf in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom and maritime security operations. From June 2009 to June 2012 CDR Mode was assigned to the United States Coast Guard Academy, New London, Connecticut to serve the staff and the brigade of cadets. From July 2012 to October 2014, he was assigned as the Command Chaplain of the USS WASHINGTON Strike Group in Japan completing two six month deployments in the Seventh Fleet. From November 2014 to May 2016, he was the Command Chaplain of Naval Station Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. Since June 2016, he assumed the duties as the Division Director of Plans and Operations for the Chaplain Corps.

CDR Mode is a 2015 Naval War College Distance Education graduate of Joint Professional Military Education Phase I. His awards and decorations include a Bronze Star Medal, Defense Meritorious Service Medal (1 star), Meritorious Service Medal, Navy Commendation Medal (2 stars), Joint Service Achievement Medal, Combat Action Ribbon.

Renowned author and speaker, Fr. Jacques Philippe, spoke on "Personal Prayer & Deep Relationship with God" at St. Mary's on March 10, 2017.

With over one million copies sold in 24 languages, Jacques Philippe’s writings on themes such as prayer, interior freedom, and peace of heart have become classics of Catholic spirituality.

About Fr. Jacques Philippe:

Jacques Philippe was born on March 12, 1947 in Lorraine, France. After studying mathematics in college, he spent several years teaching and doing scientific research. In 1976, he met the then recently-founded Community of the Beatitudes and answered the Lord’s call to follow Him through this vocation (see below for more information on the Community of the Beatitudes). He then spent several years in Nazareth and Jerusalem immersing himself in the study of Hebrew and the Jewish roots of Christianity. In 1981, he traveled to Rome to study theology and canon law, was ordained a priest in 1985, and began his work as a spiritual director, working in the formation of priests and seminarians of the Community. In 1994, he returned to France, where he assumed various responsibilities including the development of training in the Community, and participation in its General Council. He has also preached retreats regularly in France and abroad and has consolidated his principal retreat themes into several books on spirituality. In recent years, he has devoted himself primarily to spiritual direction and preaching retreats.

The Community of the Beatitudes is an Ecclesial Family of Consecrated life founded in France in 1973. The Community of the Beatitudes gathers faithful from all states of life (married or unmarried lay people, seminarians, priests, permanent deacons, men and women consecrated in celibacy) who wish to conform as closely as possible to the model of the early Christian community through the common life, the sharing of goods, voluntary poverty and an intense sacramental and liturgical life. The members of the Community (which has a contemplative vocation based on Carmelite spirituality), are actively engaged in the service of the poor and the proclamation of the Gospel.
