CONTENT HIGHLIGHTWhat now?‘Quiz’, a compelling dramatisation of the true story of Major Charles Ingram and his £1 Million win on Who Wants to be a Millionaire, was an absolute television drama masterpiece. In the mould of escapism when in a Corona Virus lockdown, who knew a comedic take on a cough could be exactly what the nation needed. With star turns along the way, attention to detail and just letting the story itself do the heavy-lifting, this was a great central piece of content, to put the James Graham penned piece of work at its most base function. What made it all the more compelling and activated the experience of the experience was all the peripheral (solicited and unsolicited) content supporting the core asset.
The following supporting content added colour to the show itself:
Available on all your favourite Podcast platforms is the companion podcast, ‘Final Answer’ with three accompanying episodes provided by Sony Entertainment.
‘Final Answer’ sees creator and writer of Quiz, James Graham alongside producer Alice Pearse and executive producer Dan Winch, go deep on how the ITV/AMC drama was made.
Final Answer Podcast
Over on YouTube, daytime TV presenters of the time, Nick and Anne Diamond launched their new quarantine-induced YouTube channel with a Zoom call with James Graham and Chris Tarrant to discuss the show and recall the detail in the moment. It is a clever nostalgia-led idea but poorly executed with less than 2000 organic views
In a Twitter Thread that nobody asked for, yet 45k Likes later, we have this delightful thread of waves from hopeful contestants.
Inspired by #Quiz and due to having nothing better to do... here are some of my favourite ‘waves’ from hopeful contestants on Who Wants To Be A Millionaire.

Where next?Outside of the captivity bubble, this week has showcased how television content can still be an event and it is additional and peripheral content that is the catalyst to increasing conversation around the core asset. And the public will create it if you don’t, and that might just be fine too.
It will be interesting to see if a similar ‘event’ show can capture the conversation and attention outside of a global pandemic captivity setting, it is one of the key variables that needs to be isolated.
CONTENT MARKETING ARTICLESFacebook launches accessibility and creator tools to make live-streaming available to more people - The Verge
These new features came out of a hack challenge Facebook ran with their internal teams as part of a Corona Virus response. Which is the nice PR-friendly way of saying "Zoom crisis response plan". The fact you won't need Facebook to access some content is a good thing and will overcome the trust issues. And whilst Zoom has trust issues, it has a lower barrier to entry with no need to register to access a call. There are lots of great changes coming down the line that improve and automate accessibility for the view and opens up the utility of the platform beyond keeping lucrative Gamers happy and funded.
“Facebook is providing partners, mostly faith-based and education organizations, with mobile phone accessories to help them go live. It’s also launching a “live producer” feature for more professional setups that require a connected camera and software encoder. The company says this feature will make managing live streams easier and includes tools like comment moderation, overlays, and clipping.”
Quibi is the anti-TikTok (that’s a bad thing) - TechCrunch
It has all the feel of being the brain-child of a consortium of disgruntled media-types who didn’t like other platforms getting a cut of their money, so it is borne not of an end user need or demand but selfish, not-quite-nefarious needs.
The content feels condescending and socially short-sighted in its design, structure and format. It sees TikTok and runs a mile back to its home comforts of telly in the early-2000s and asks the question that nobody else is, of “What would a 10-minute episode of Friends look like that can’t be shared with actual friends?”
“It takes either audacious self-confidence or reckless hubris to build a completely asocial video app in 2020.”
Global social media research summary 2020 - SmartInsights
Dave Chaffey’s ever reliable and expanding compendium of social media research has its latest cut to bring the frenetic pace of change in social media up to date for at least another 5-minutes. IT is a useful point of reference for backing up usage stats, strategic moves and tactical plays.
“Interesting to see the importance of social media marketing for influencing purchases, particularly amongst younger age groups.”

CONTENT HIGHLIGHTWhat now?Sonny Malhotra is a London-based photographer who has turned his passion into a project to capture, document and share the isolation of others through portrait photography on his Instagram feed.
Londoners volunteer to have their photo taken and with social distancing at play, @Photosonny takes their photo through the window, as part of his daily exercise efforts by bike, adding supporting commentary in the post comment.
Each image is a captivating take on captivity, isolation and muddling through the collectively shared experience of quarantine when living alone, as a couple, family or group.
These are uncharted times worth documenting. Others have now started to copy this creative photojournalism in other cities.
Where next?I would love to see these as Instagram Stories with a 5 frame edit of accompanying audio. A recorded interview after the shoot would maintain social distancing and add a layer of authenticity and colour to the already captivating content.
When this is all over, an exhibition in a gallery should provide the contrast of a vast space hosting the subject matter of what, for some, is no space at all.
Arguably, this is essential Comms, reinforcing the stay at home message, practising good social distancing and building out community when we are all having to shut away. It is this creative approach to tackling a problem that should be commended and seen far and wide as we stay home and safe.

HMRC implements social tools in recruitment process in bid to boost customer service - PublicTechnology.net
In a move to shift the recruitment process and to address key target-driven issues within the organisation, HMRC are to turn to social in its capacity to generate data, target an audience and reach the kind of people that traditional recruitment channels cannot. I think we will start to see a lot more job adverts in Instagram, Facebook and Twitter, it is astonishing that social and content roles don’t start their recruitment in those channels beyond an auto-generated tweet to a jobs board already.
“Part of those measures included “revised, more appealing job adverts, supported by enhanced marketing” and “attraction and outreach activity, aimed at driving up candidate numbers and reaching all diversity groups.”
Is Trolls World Tour the most important film of 2020? - The Guardian
When Cats was released and flopped at the back end of 2019, it was a signal that the movie industry was not hitting its stride. And now in isolation and quarantine times of early to mid-2020, cinemas are no go areas. Major releases from Bond to Top Gun have been postponed until Christmas and film studios have content sat there waiting, collecting dust, not takings. Trolls World Tour, the follow-up to the excellent Trolls film that was released in 2016, is being heralded as just the tonic for these times and the ticket is not for the cinema but straight to your on-demand screens at home. Distribution is through Sky Movies at £16 a pop. It is an uncomfortable price point for a home view without the fully-fledged cinema experience but it is much need entertainment. Critically, it is a tipping point for movie distribution.
“If people become used to getting new releases direct to their homes, they might never go back. Once broken, the theatrical window might never get fixed.”

CONTENT MARKETING CAMPAIGNAmber Share: SubPar parks
What now?Not a campaign per se but a fantastic creative concept intrinsically linked to insight and qualitative data points. Taking the 1 TripAdvisor reviews of US National Parks that seem to miss the point or have a more conflicting point of view on the view in point and turning it into hand-lettered creative posters is something a National Park as a brand, could have* done.
Amber says: “Subpar Parks is a snarky love letter to the National Parks System. When I discovered that there were 1-star reviews for every single one of the 62 national parks, I set out to illustrate each park along with a hand-lettered 1-star review as a way to put a positive, fun spin on such a negative mindset.”
Where next?Amber’s creations have had a lot of pick-up in Social and she intends to keep adding to them and a compelling merch range. One of the challenges she is facing is other people now taking the low-res, inferior “Save to Computer” versions and creating posters of their own, available at a lower price. Not cool.
This could easily be extended into a National Parks campaign to get influencers and celebrities involved in a reading-out-of-mean-tweets style activation, to give it more reach and get a collective rallying cry for the National Parks.
We will certainly see ‘rip off’ versions of this as a campaign with other destinations seeking to make a virtue of negative reviews but they will likely fall into the trap of trying to flip those negative reviews that were actually valid in the first place.

CONTENT MARKETING ARTICLESThe Best of Experiential 2020 - AdAge
In these isolated times, one of the biggest marketing tactics to take a hit is experiential. Taking brand experiences into the physical world and connecting with an audience is off the table, for now. But we can, and should, reflect on what constitutes great experiential, ready to hit the ground running once we come out of lockdown. And in the meantime, keep an eye out for brands reliant on experiential using the word ‘pivot’.
“Experiential marketing offers consumers a tangible manifestation of their favourite brands and creates an inclusive feeling of community.”
Your quick crisis communication plan - Talkwalker
An interesting exploration of crisis communications in the context of social data. For all the talk of ‘flattening the curve’, this is as true in crisis comms as it is in germ warfare. A documented plan should always be ready and Talkwalker’s evidence-based approach and social listening data might just help you shape your initial and ongoing response in a crisis, using the relevant channels to communicate. Their use of COVID-19 as a context for crisis comms is well worth a look.
“A global crisis can hit at any time, and even with the best marketing strategy in the world, you can’t stop it impacting your brand. But you can mitigate the damage with an effective crisis communication plan.”
Weekly podcast data amid the COVID-19 crisis - Podtrac
When the going gets isolated, they get podcasting too. We can expect another explosion of podcasts in the coming weeks, from the hobbyist to organisations that have already benefitted from growing an audio audience. It has been an increasing trend that new TV show formats have been piloted in podcast form (Brexicast from the BBC, by way of example) but the reverse may now also be true, with existing tv shows having to switch to podcast form where visual stimuli are in lockdown. Listen to this space and keep up to date with Podcast audience data with Podtrac.

CONTENT MARKETING CAMPAIGNMcCANN BRISTOL: REFUGE - MY HUSBAND, MY LOVER
What now? This is a great piece of work. 'My Husband, My Lover' is the follow-up to McCann Bristol's pro bono campaign for Refuge that started with a series of compelling reversible poems over the 2018 Christmas period. This time, with Valentine's as the focal delivery date and subject-matter, a single poem has been released.
Read the poem top to bottom and you are caught up in a whirlwind romance. Read it in reverse and the narrative shifts, shocks and makes you think, reflective of just how quickly a relationship might take a turn for the worse.
There is no doubt that this is a clever and we'll crafted campaign. It is rightly gaining plaudits for its message but those are mostly to be found on LinkedIn or among marketing professionals on Twitter, as curated and amplified by the charity itself on their social network.
A victim may not self identify and share their experience of, or how they identify with, the campaign itself on social. It is great work that truly should be seen. I just hope that as a piece of persuasive messaging, it has been effective where it matters and with the right people, not marketers.
Additional channel support for the Christmas campaign poems also saw two video versions created and full page print ad distribution. Whether the Valentine's poem was created by the considerable copy talent at the same time as the Christmas assets is unclear. A single Christmas video to enable a single Valentine's video would have been a possible consideration for the benefits of campaign recall over time.
Where next? The charity's role in social should be to convert the campaign awareness into vital and discrete support for victims or education for those to spot the signs of domestic abuse in others. Support can be achieved through the dedicated Freephone 24-Hour National Domestic Violence Helpline: 0808 2000 247.
A clever social interpretation would be to deliver the poetry content through Instagram Stories using the tap-along functionality for the first read, followed by an instruction to encourage a reverse tap to activate the mechanic in a more tactile manner. Additionally, the use of the Thread mechanic on twitter would allow for the narrative to unfold before the culmination in the reverse read engages you with the upward scroll.

CONTENT MARKETING ARTICLESA Clear Choice: Fiverr Acquires ClearVoice - Fiverr
Whilst Fiverr had an early reputation for being the go to place to get a caricature version of someone’s face for a quick Secret Santa fix, it has quietly been responsible for the outsourcing of some of the trickier content marketing elements that small to medium businesses need to build out their brand. Combined, they provide a chance to scale up even further and into specialist subject matter in written, audio and video content too.

The AI and Machine Learning Revolution Is Coming for Content Marketing - CMS Wire
The AI and ML intersection in content marketing is currently more in the camp of automation, efficiency and reducing the need for human controlled processes with risk of error in the CMS but the not too distant future of ‘computer-led’ content marketing goes beyond smart bulk editing and content organisation.
“The current application of AI and ML in content management is more akin to power-assisted steering than a self-driving car.”
The secret taxonomy behind IKEA’s product names, from Billy to Poäng - Quartz

With only a few taxonomical adjustments over the years, as product ranges and increased, the core rules have stood the test of time and came to be because of the founder’s struggle to recall product numbers and names when they were sequentially assigned.

CONTENT MARKETING CAMPAIGNMULLENLOWE LONDON: RECRUITING THE NHS ‘HIDDEN ARMY’ What now?It is well-documented that recruiting front-line staff for the NHS is a struggle. It is less stated that what is effectively, ‘the human supply-chain to the front-line, is an equally tough recruitment challenge. It may not be cool to work for the NHS, sure it commands great public respect and support - if not Governmental - but the vast share of that is with the Doctors and Nurses. MullenLowe London have built upon their previous "We are the NHS" campaign efforts for the NHS to directly target IT and support staff in a new recruitment drive.
An NHS press release about the campaign said: “From entry level roles through to senior management positions, every member of the NHS team plays a vital part in caring for the millions of NHS patients with care and compassion when it matters most.”
The commercial features a compelling narrative that includes live footage from various hospital locations and does a great job to bring to life the life-saving efforts of those in job roles that are hard to portray.
Speaking to campaign, the ad's director, Simon Ratigan, said:
“Every shot does count, especially on this project, as finding good material proved difficult. The ad is to promote IT and support jobs within the NHS. Neither are particularly dynamic roles nor visually interesting. But this ‘hidden army’, as everyone is calling them, plays a pivotal part in the organisation and, like doctors and nurses, the NHS are in desperate need of them.”
The call to action on the ad invites you to search "NHS support and IT Jobs" and the result is a paid search listing up top. This does the triage job (and effectiveness measurement) of getting you into a job search functionality environment but creatively and content-wise, feels a bit disconnected from the stylish ad-spot from whence you came.
Everything about this ad - and for all the scouring I can undertake, this is above the line only - has the tropes of army recruitment commercials. The pace, as generated by the cuts in the edit, the soundtrack, the live action footage, it has it all. But crucially, it has compassionate and considered copy.
Tone of voice and language are crucial. "We're a ping in the pocket" is such a clear and succinct way of conveying so much more, it carries as much weight as the later line of, "We're a new kidney, for Lily."
Where Karmarama and The Army may have split the nation, upset the Snowflakes and made the miffling masses miffle, this ad gets it so so right.
Where next?It would be great to see a fully-integrated campaign with LinkedIn or a recruitment firm partnership, if not NHS owned web properties themselves, seeking to make more of the people behind the roles they seek to fill.
As Rightmove have done an excellent job of telling the human story behind motivations to move house in their 'Moving Stories' content play, the NHS human supply chain must be full of moments that matter(ed) and little twists of 'convince and convert' anecdotes that could be connected to a job description.

With YouTube being the go-to source for moving image content, it has been found that video content is tied to offline interests in those aged 12-15. At the same time, the study reports that children described going out to meet friends face-to-face as ‘too much effort’.
“Overall, children seem most attracted to content that they can view on their own device, over which they can exercise maximum choice, and which directly feeds the things that interest them.”

CONTENT MARKETING CAMPAIGNSHUTTERSTOCK: USING THEIR CONTENT TO PROMOTE THEIR IMAGE LIBRARY
What now?Shutterstock, the “Royalty free stock images, photos, videos, and more” people have dipped into their vast image library to create a marketing campaign of their own, to help fix the problem that was arguably of their own creation. Stock image libraries have a bad reputation for many things, lack of diversity, lack of reality and so so many awkward office-based high five assets that only get used in irony.
In order to stand out from their competitors, they have created their first marketing campaign in six years to show users that ‘It’s not stock, it’s Shutterstock’. With a range of eye-catching assets and inter-changeable copy that still uses the ‘-stock’ stem, this campaign goes above the line, in print and on social to inspire creatives to tell their story better.
As Shutterstock’s Graeme Allister, Mannaging Copywriter, would have it: “Take another look at our leading library of stock assets, with over 200 million images, video clips, and music tracks. You’ll discover content that’s dramatic, fun, and unexpected. You’ll see it’s not just an image, or a clip, or a piece of music — it’s a feeling, a sensation, a source of inspiration.”
Where next?Shutterstock are already doing more to battle their diversity in stock issue and are at the forefront of connecting users with increasingly powerful phone cameras to capture more imagery as it happens. It would be good to see Shutterstock do more story-telling in their marketing themselves.
Every photographer can tell you about the moment they captured that one shot, Shutterstock would do well to amplify those stories to help make an image land with a wider audience and inspire photographers to shoot better, inspire creatives to image better. Ultimately, for quality to rule over quantity from an organisation that sits on a wealth of content.

CONTENT MARKETING ARTICLESFrom WhatsApp to Alexa : why the ad-free era is over - The Guardian
If you build it (and ‘it’ is a wave of voice activated devices that bring vocal-activated utility into the home), then they, (where ‘they’ is adverts), will come. This article in The Guardian is an exploration into the, as yet, relatively, untouched advertising landscape of voice-led search and home-based devices.
Many people are citing the research by Fast Company that suggests 50% of all search engine activity will be voice activated by 2020. I think there is a huge caveat around transactional and quick win task queries gaining traction but long-tail search around where to go on holiday or your next property purchase, not yet and not 2020. I digress.
Read up on how home devices, WhatsApp and more are all going to receive an injection of advertising wherever possible, some might even be personalised, clever and creative and some of it will be dumb and obtrusive.
“Batten down the hatches and prepare yourself for the advertising onslaught.”
Why McDonald’s doesn’t fight social media wars - PR Week
In a relatively candid interview, McDonald’s Jano Cabrera, SVP, U.S. comms, global media and PR has shared with PR Week the reason behind their strategic refusal to get involved in social media tit-for-tat with their rivals. Firstly, as well you might imagine, they don’t need to. They are the market leader. But also, because it doesn’t make a difference to their overall comms strategy, their business goals and their bottom line.
"The nature of leadership brands is you get to a point where you understand real ROI is being mindful of and responsive to competition," he said. "But you don’t stay a leadership brand by simply responding to competition. You do it by continuing to innovate and staying customer-focused."
Fyre Festival - Netflix
Just watch it. It’s compelling. It’s probably going to happen again. The influencer industry is a farce. The story is a bunch of memes stitched together to tell one true crime comedy.
“Any time there would be anything that was ‘distasteful,’ or calling Fyre out on anything, it was always a matter of, go to that source and eliminate it. [We were] instantly flagging words like lineup, performers, details, info, flights, fraud, stupid, scam, festival even. ‘Festival’ was blocked — it got that bad.”
Did your Blue Monday social media campaign matter to your customer relationship? - DMA
The origins of Blue Monday may well be a debunked theory and a PR industry creation - nonetheless, if done well, it is a conversation starter and an opportunity for brands to connect, engage and maybe even reinforce a customer relationship around the topic and its various extrapolations. It is also a time for brands to miss the point of campaigns and even the basics of marketing and customer relationships completely.

CONTENT MARKETING CAMPAIGNNational Trust: Creating stand-alone assets on Giphy to support editorial content
What now?The National Trust are a national institution in which we trust. Generations have done so for some time. Recent figures suggest memberships are at an all time high and spanning generations, meaning even snowflakes like to see old properties covered in snowflakes.
One of the things the National Trust has done well for some years now is social media and it has long been doing content right. For me, the children’s collectible poster and magazine was a hotly anticipated mail drop before I even knew what Direct Mail was.
Now the National Trust are getting into the animated sticker game on Giphy. It shows that their visual assets need not be stuck at stunning photography of landmarks and locations. The sticker set includes a membership card, the 2019 handbook and with half an eye on integrating into other content channels, a ‘swipe up’ animation.
Expect to see the stickers - hosted on the National Trust Giphy channel - deployed in organic Instagram Stories in the coming weeks and I am sure they will be hoping that the general public - members or otherwise - will start to adopt them in their channels as part of a visit experience also.
Where next? The National Trust has a wealth of property assets which lend themselves to visual media and visitors are encouraged to capture as part of compelling user generated content opportunities. By enriching this photography with stickers and adapting Stories on Instagram and Snapchat, they have a chance to reach out further and on the terms and in the animated visual language of those that inhabit those platforms.
It would be great to see them take their Stories content further and bring them to life with a wider range of supporting sticker animations, including making sticker sets a mandatory element of any influencer take-overs, sharing their visit experience and incorporating these animated branded elements to enhance brand exposure and consumer resonance.
As for Giphy as a platform itself, beyond hosting, it is yet to find its place beyond that space of being a well-indexed and searchable moving image library and with conjecture suggesting it gets down-graded in Google search, it offers little inherent SEO benefit but as a means to enhance a content experience, it certainly offers that much.

The content load time statistics are quite curious, given that you need load time and attention to be arrested on the referring property itself and if Facebook’s 3-seconds or bust scare-mongering is to be believed, you’ve likely lost someone before they even get the chance to try out your load time on that whitepaper you get there.
“Load time is killing B2B marketing ROI. 4+secs load time = 73.56% of clicks fail to make the destination.”
Bands F.C. - Bands F.C.
If you like music, football and design, check out famous bands and their football kit designs as created by Bands F.C. Its visually compelling, clever and curious and now spinning off into a great merchandise opportunity. With over 400 designs of badges and full kits, the collection has found itself in exhibition spaces around the UK and pub conversations with sportswear purists and indie band snobs alike.
“The idea is a simple one, that came to us one evening back in July. Bands as Football Teams, Football Teams as Bands.”
Spotify will let now brands sponsor its Discover Weekly weekly playlist - Techcrunch
Spotify is introducing additional ad formats in the year ahead and first up is the opportunity to pay good media money on pairing your brand with their Discover Weekly playlists. Discover Weekly playlists are the algorithmic jewel in the crown of Spotify’s service and so offering the opportunity to serve up (relevant) ad inventory to listeners makes complete sense.
“Personalisation has quickly gone from a nice-to-have to an expected consumer experience that delights audiences and marketers are craving opportunities to be part of it” Danielle Lee, Global Head of Partner Solutions at Spotify

CONTENT MARKETING CAMPAIGNTourism Ireland: Using the data of emotion to create content What now?Show me an Ad about tourism in Ireland that doesn’t go all in on the emotion of falling in love with the place. At least with this latest TV Ad spot and wider social execution, there is the perfect partnership of data and emotion in a simple, yet effective, creative route that wears both on its sleeve.
With Tourism Ireland (and Publicis London’s) new proposition of “Fill your heart with Ireland”, it is easy to see where the execution came from but it could also have been a contrived and engineered affair of the heart and screen.
Where next?I would like to see more supporting content that reinforces Ireland as the source of the physiological experience. Spotify playlists of Irish artists and their songs that fit a certain range of BPM. An academic explaining the reason behind the rush of blood connected with the experience. Photos captured by the couple overlaid with their heart beat pattern in print, display and beyond. VR executions in target countries that generate that same heightened response by merely putting on a headset but with recommended destinations and itineraries based on your own physiological response.
Client: Tourism Ireland
Agency: Publicis London
CONTENT MARKETING ARTICLESWe learn “digital” doesn’t have to mean “short” - Nieman Labs
A fascinating case study from an innovative digital publisher, sharing their long and short of it in content experiments.
“I’m a proponent of a “right-form” approach to journalism — the idea of thinking about how to tell stories from the outset in terms of video vs. audio vs. text, short-form vs. long-form, whatever the right form for the journalism may be.” Raney Aronson-Rath
Anthony Joshua delivers knock-out surprise to super fans on Boxing Day - Evening Standard
The tried and tested route of candid camera and undercover celeb reveal is used to good effect to create content that highlights the possibilities of connecting with a publisher and their content (but only when you are a loyal Sky VIP)
“The one-on-one nature of this is so personal I don’t think any of them will forget this for a long, long time, and we encourage all our customers to join Sky VIP and find their own incredible experiences.” Adam Smith
Marketers who prioritise digital advertising have delusions of effectiveness - The Drum
Social and other digital channels as part of the mix, sure. But all in and you’re missing out and missing the mark.
“Social media is vastly overrated” Samuel Scott
