Citrix Provisioning Services (PVS) is one of the two image management technologies available in Citrix Virtual Apps and Desktops and Citrix DaaS. Historically PVS has been used to deliver Citrix Virtual Apps and Desktop workloads (VDA's) to servers and virtual machines from a single image over the network. However, it can also be used without CVAD/DaaS as a standalone product, physically streaming the OS disk to an endpoint device. These endpoint devices can be “dummy terminals” with no hard drives at all, zero/thin clients, high-end compute and graphics devices, and everything in between. This can include additional use cases for Security and locations with devices without hard drives.
In this episode we discuss the history of PVS and some of its applicable use cases. We also cover some technical aspects of PVS and the benefits enabled by the roll-forward and roll-back of images.

XenServer has been a part of the Citrix family since the acquisition of XenSource in 2007. It is a solid player in the virtualization market particularly for running Citrix workloads. With purpose built features for improving the performance of virtual desktops such as Intellicache, Read Caching, PVS-Accelerator, and GPU virtualization many organizations leverage XenServer to host and deliver their Citrix Virtual Apps and Desktops and Citrix DaaS workloads.

The Citrix Virtual Apps and Desktops 2402 LTSR includes several years’ worth of features to take advantage of. Some of these features were previously only offered in the cloud, and a plethora of on-premises features have been added since the release of the last LTSR in March of 2022. Additionally, customers on our current release (CR) track can leverage this release as a regular update within their environments. So let’s take a closer look at what the 2402 LTSR can do for you.

The rise of remote and hybrid work has allowed users to access their Citrix environments in increasingly diverse ways. To support this rise in flexible working arrangements, employers are now tasked with providing a seamless end-user experience across an array of endpoints. This adds complexity to managing, deploying, and standardizing Citrix Workspace app configurations and upgrades. Outdated Workspace app versions can lead to version drift, security vulnerabilities, discrepancies in capability, and connectivity issues – all headaches for an administrator.
To address these issues, we introduced Citrix Global App Configuration Service which offers a convenient and centralized deployment solution for administrators delivering the Citrix Workspace app across devices, domains, and operating systems. Available via the Citrix Cloud console without additional licensing, Global App Configuration Service enables Citrix administrators to control and deploy Citrix Workspace app configurations and settings — without depending on 3rd party app-deployment tools across on-premise and cloud environments. Citrix teams can now manage and upgrade the Citrix Workspace app on any device accessing the Citrix environment, including BYO devices.
It also provides a one-stop shop for administrators to apply application settings such as agent management, session resolution, and clipboard redirection for all end users accessing the environment.
Global App Configuration Service offers essential services to streamline the admin and end-user experience of the Citrix Workspace app. These services address several major use cases such as email discovery of StoreFront/Workspace, centralized Workspace agent management, and application configuration.

Since we released the Citrix Workspace app in 2019, we have continued to innovate and improve the user experience through streamlined management and integrations. If you haven’t picked up on the trend yet, let me just reinforce that Citrix is working overtime in 2023 to help you go all-in on your hybrid multi-cloud strategy. As we announced earlier this year, we’re significantly investing in features and solutions that provide you with the choice and flexibility to develop your environment how you want it, where you want it, and to integrate with solutions you want.
To that end, we know that many of you are leveraging or considering leveraging Nutanix Cloud Clusters (NC2) hybrid multi-cloud software to simplify IT operations, move to the cloud faster, and lower your on-premises cost of operations. We are excited to announce official support for running Citrix DaaS and Citrix Virtual Apps and Desktops on Nutanix Cloud Clusters on Azure.
The Citrix plugin for NC2 on Azure is available today for early access, and is currently compatible with Citrix Machine Creation Services (MCS). Compatibility with Citrix Provisioning Services (PVS) is expected prior to general availability later this year.
While Nutanix NC2 on Azure was previously a Citrix-Ready validated solution, by providing official Citrix support, we’re ensuring customers can move forward with their hybrid multi-cloud deployment plans, and be confident that they’ll have a great support experience if they run into any issues along the way.
Azure support for NC2 comes as a significant extension to previously announced support for Nutanix Cloud Clusters on AWS – a capability shown to help you burst 2,000 Citrix Desktops to AWS in under two hours as opposed to days or weeks!

We are continuing to evolve and add capabilities to our Connector Appliance. In case you missed it, I recently published a blog post taking a closer look at the fundamentals. To summarize, the continued development of the Connector Appliance is part of an ongoing effort to reduce the on-prem footprint needed to run Citrix and related infrastructure. This effort includes minimizing and unifying the number of connectors needed. In this blog post, I wanted to look closer at where you can host the Connector Appliance and what that means for you.
The Connector Appliance is a virtual appliance that, behind the scenes, runs a custom Linux-based operating system that customers can host in the way it best suits them. With that in mind, in combination with making the Connector Appliance fit more use cases, we have also looked to increase the options available for where you can host Connector Appliances.

The traditional 9-to-5 job looks a lot different today, and for many, there’s less sitting at a desk in an office building. Although some executives and employees in sales and customer success have always needed flexibility, many companies have adopted mobile and hybrid work styles for most if not all of their workforce.
What’s behind the change? The pandemic, the influx of a new generation in the workforce, and more employees who need to work on the go and stay productive, no matter where they are.
Users now expect to be able to access corporate applications on the move and at their desk, all while having access to an external monitor, keyboard, mouse, printer, and audio devices. They also require a device powerful enough to deliver the performance necessary for accessing corporate applications, with a large display to perform business-critical work.
In recent years, tablet devices such as iPads have become more prevalent in the enterprise because of their convenience and larger screens. Apple’s newest tablets offer displays that are nearly 13-inches, and they are much lighter compared to laptops. They also come equipped with a powerful processor and memory to deliver high performance.
When combined with Citrix Workspace app, users can access their Windows-based apps and desktops on the device, providing enterprise capabilities with a great user experience. In Citrix Consulting Services, most of our engagements involve Microsoft technologies. But Linux virtual desktops have proved to be an interesting use case for many of our customers.
It’s an ideal solution for developers, high-graphics users, and others. One interesting scenario I worked on recently involved a non-domain joined (NDJ) Linux VDA, which provides IT departments with the ability to deliver a Linux Desktop in a segregated, secure environment where Active Directory integration is not possible.

When consumerization of IT was the next big thing, enterprises spent a lot of time and money modernizing apps and working to accommodate the way employees want to work. Many of those changes truly improved the way people work every day. BYO device users, noncorporate machines, corporate workstations, mobile devices, and third parties all needed access to company resources, and the lowest common denominator across all these new endpoints was the web browser.
It was a fantastic place to build toward. The browser is ubiquitous and free, everyone knows how to use one, and there was very little barrier to entry. There is a downside though — they are built for the consumer and not with enterprise requirements in mind. Enterprises are looking for security features like clipboard controls, fine-tuned data download and upload policies, and the ability to enforce watermarks to prevent critical data exfiltration, among a host of other features to protect their most precious resource — their intellectual property.

It’s is a streaming technology that delivers OS images including applications, patches, updates, and other information to virtual and physical machines. If I had to summarize what IDC has learned from our clients from COVID-19, it might best be captured in two words — DIGITAL RESILIENCY. With digital transformation (DX), digital underpins every aspect of the modern enterprise. This is often ignored in traditional approaches to business resiliency, which typically focus on safeguarding distinct enterprise functions or businesses on a piecemeal basis. It is also often ignored by standard IT risk management and disaster recovery practices that safeguard specific IT assets and resources. Both perspectives typically downplay the critical business capabilities supported by DX that cut cross organizational boundaries. Both are often purely defensive.
By contrast, digital resiliency can be defined as the ability of the enterprise to not only restore essential business capabilities but also capitalize on the changed conditions to bounce back even better than before.

The proliferation of SaaS, web, and cloud-based tools in the workplace has changed how we work. No matter what the job, there seems to be an app or cloud service to make it simpler. While these tools enhance productivity, there are unintended downsides around security.
Most of these tools need a set of credentials for usage. According to Okta, the average company uses 88 apps. While each user only uses a few of those apps, there are still a lot of credentials for each employee to remember.
To manage this complexity, users take shortcuts. For example, they reuse passwords across services. They also use common phrases that are easy to guess. Many users don’t even try to make it hard on attackers — “123456” was the most common password of 2020.

As I planned out this blog series, my original intention was to cover the Microsoft Cloud Adoption Framework (CAF) for Azure in three parts: the first dedicated to introducing the design principles for enterprise-scale landing zones, and the second and third covering the critical design areas. Over the past year, there has been much speculation about what the future of work might look like in a post-pandemic world. Less often have we talked about what education might look like. The global pandemic has forced everyone to adapt, but education institutions have had a huge mountain to climb, being steeped in tradition and often thriving around a campus-based culture. Up to a year ago, remote learning on such a grand scale was never thought possible, nor was it necessarily the ambition.
So much has shifted in 12 months, and despite best efforts to acclimate to a new way of learning, many challenges remain. Above all, the pandemic has shone a spotlight on the need for universities to offer a consistent learning environment between the campus and those accessing lessons remotely to ensure future success and resilience. If we consider that universities are nurturing the upcoming generation of workplace talent, perhaps this builds a case for us tackling the future of our education system first, to then run in parallel with workplace evolution.

Andy Whiteside: 00:00 Hello everyone, and welcome to the second episode of the Citrix session. I'm your host, Andy Whiteside. I have with me bill Sutton, the director of services for his Integra bill. How's it going? Going well. Andy, how about you? I am doing well. We also have with us the art authors of this blog. Kelly and Daniel and Daniel Kelly. How are you guys doing? We're happy to be here. Thanks for having us on guys. As we talked about the idea here is to give people in the world of Citrix, specifically an Avenue for catching up on blogs. And we encourage people to let us know if there are blogs that they would like to have the authors on for us to go through. But Kelly and Daniel are responsible for this blog. This blog was called a new on-prem license server usage insights powered by Citrix cloud. I gotta tell you guys as a guy who's been using Citrix [inaudible] Quality since the late nineties, I needed this for a whole time, either in my own environment or customer environments where has pliancy for the customer in terms of usage and what they own.
Andy Whiteside: 00:51 Oh, this right. And I believe it or not, am extremely excited to talk about Citrix license. I guess we'll; we'll jump into the article. Bill, do you have any, any thoughts before we jump?
Bill Sutton: 00:59 Yeah, sure. I was just going to echo what you said, Andy. I think this is a, you know, as a former consultant and, and an administrator for customers, I, this is a great offering particularly for those enterprises with far-flung or you know, disparate type of environments. Giving them visibility into their license, their licenses, and allowing them to track the usage, but also gives them the opportunity to be able to reallocate where those licenses are. Perhaps not needed in one location but needed, but are needed in another location that makes it a lot more seamless for them to do that.
Andy Whiteside: 01:29 I think it's a great offering. Yeah, that's great. That actually brings a topic to my mind is can they, can they share this information with their, their value-added reseller or their partner in the space? And I guess if I don't ask that later, remind me that I think that speaks really valuable. But Kelly, do you want to give a, just a little background on who you are?

Bill Sutton is the director of services, whereas integrity bill is a, a very longterm Citrix guy. A bill. How long have you been in the in the, in the UC business and specifically working with Citrix products
Bill Sutton: 00:20 Since about 1998 starting on when frame one. Dot eight with a couple of customers.
Andy Whiteside: 00:25 Wow. Well that's a, that actually beats me. I started in 99 with a w I guess it would've been when frame, what was probably when frame or Metta frame. Early metal frame days. Yeah, I think I was when frame, which is which ones? The one where it went from being its own product to where it became a bolt onto Microsoft terminal services matter frame. Metal frame. Okay. Yeah.
Bill Sutton: 00:48 When Frank was the one where you got a DVD or CD, I guess it was a CD at the time that contained both the NT three, five, one kernel as well as the wind frame software. All on all bundled together. You just slept it in and installed it and you had a working Citrix environment.
Andy Whiteside: 01:04 Yeah, and that's great. Maybe at some point in this series we'll get to get one of the old citrus guys on to tell us about the whole Microsoft back and forth. They went through to try to, to try to get access to the code and build upon build upon the Microsoft solution, which led to I guess a metal frame from wind frame. Right.
Bill Sutton: 01:22 Yeah, that would be really cool to get kind of an insider's view of that, that that would be an interesting trip down memory lane.
Andy Whiteside: 01:27 I think there's been a lot of that that's happened through the years. A couple of podcasts here and there, but it's been so long that I bet a bet a lot of the guys involved in that or, or maybe not in the business anymore or you know, a lot of the new folks have never heard that story and how, you know, Microsoft and Citrix got together to create this partnership.
Bill Sutton: 01:44 Yeah. Certainly in the EUC space. I would imagine a lot of the folks that are, that are working with the products day to day these days aren't aware of the history and where the various components all came from. You know, the Citrix stack, the Asti HDX FAC versus RDS, you know, where did RDS come from? And Microsoft invented or they get it from Citrix. You and I know the answer, but the interesting to convey that type of information I think to some of the folks who are
Andy Whiteside: 02:10 Well, and I think this part of our conversation here is a good segue into the, a, the concept of this podcast. So you and I and others, we're going to invite others. We're going to go and we're going to look at Citrix blogs that come out on a weekly basis and, and we're going to pick one each show and we're going to dissect that that blog and we're going to figure out what's in it for the community. What's in it for Citrix? You know, what the, what the the writer, the author is trying to get across and we're even going to invite the author and see if they'll join us for this podcast. And
