But while this may help them be heard, the different tune may hamper their mating success.Sugar is today's popular dietary villain, but does it make sense to demonise a single nutrient? Dr Alan Barclay from the Dietitians Association of Australia explains why we shouldn't just follow the latest fads.Just because a scientific study gets a result, that doesn't mean it's true. The Reproducibility Project tried to replicate 100 psychology papers, and only 36% got a significant result (consistent with a recent high-profile retraction of a paper about canvassing support for same-sex marriage). As John Ioannidis pointed out in 2005, most published research findings are false, and the best way to improve this is to try to remove bias and do larger studies with more statistical significance.

Carnivorous plants aren't always scary: some form mutually beneficial symbiotic relationships with animals. The Fanged Pitcher-Plant from Borneo, Nepenthes bicalcarata (yes it actually has fangs), provides a home for carpenter ants, Camponotus schmitzi. And another species, Nepenthes hemsleyana, "communicates" with bats to encourage them to roost inside it, then feeds off their poop.Kathleen Garland, from the Weisbecker Lab at the University of Queensland, has been measuring bandicoot forelimbs, which are more diverse than those of other marsupial species. She explains how this supports the theory that marsupial forelimbs evolved to help them climb into their mother's pouch, because bandicoots are the exception to the rule.We also give a shoutout to Heteropoda davidbowie and Wunderpus photogenicus as we look at some odd species names. This includes those named to insult people and tautonyms, i.e. those with repeated genus and species names (e.g. Rattus rattus, Bison bison and Gorilla gorilla gorilla), which is similar to the linguistic phenomenon of contrastive focus reduplication, as described in the famous Salad-salad paper ("It's tuna salad, not SALAD-salad").
The unfortunately named Hagfish or Slime Eel reveals a lot about how fish evolved, remaining fairly similar to its form 300 million years ago. It has gills, but doesn't need them to breathe, so what are they for?Rewilding is the protection of natural habitat by reintroduction of native plants and animals and exclsuion of exotic species. These blood-sucking insects are believed to have diverged from head lice, Pediculus humanus capitis, when humans started wearing clothes—which evidence suggests could have been as long as 170,000 years ago.We also talk to astrophysicist Cleo Loi, who discovered giant plasma tubes in the Earth's magnetosphere while an undergraduate at the University of Sydney. We bust the myth of this myth: the original article, published on Natural News, is based on a Swedish study published in May 2014, which highlights the need for people in Scandinavia to get enough vitamin D. At the same time though it confirms the link between sun exposure and melanoma, and actually says the rules are different in Australia.The moral of the story? Follow the Cancer Council's SunSmart guidelines (which take vitamin D into account) and always check sources for scientific claims.
All clocks are an analog of the earth spinning on its axis, which we divide up into minutes and seconds to tell the time. But the earth's rotation is not constant, and changes speed over time. The International Earth Rotation and Reference Systems Service decides when we need to add an extra second here and there to keep our clocks in sync with the actual length of a day. Guest presenter and bat expert Manisha Bhardwaj tells us about a bacteria that helps fight white-nose syndrome, a fungal disease that's killing American bats, and how it's now being tested in the wild.Bacteria also contribute to medicine by producing drugs, e.g. genetically modified Escherichia coli is used to manufacture insulin for treating diabetes.Now American and Canadian scientists have found a way to use yeast to synthesise a precursor to opiates—which include drugs like heroin, morphine and codeine—so that they can be made in the laboratory instead of from opium poppies.If that wasn't enough to turn you around, think about which is more real: centrifugal force, which throws you outward when you're turning in a circle, or centripetal force, the inward-pointing force that keeps you rotating?Turns out it's all relative... Continuing our investigation of the science of so-called unconventional gas extraction, we turn to Australia where coal seam gas is driving community and environmental concerns.Although fracking is rarely used here (see the latest industry statistics), and the entire vast Great Artesian Basin is unlikely to be depleted (see the image above), some local water supplies have been contaminated by leaks of waste from drilling, for which the companies responsible have received insignificant penalties (see for example in 2011, 2014 and 2015).Gas's usefulness as a low-emission fuel is also thrown into question by fugitive emissions of methane from the majority of wells (according to a federal government study), although health risks from gas leaks are hard to verify (see the Queensland government report of health impacts on the town of Tara).But don't let that get you down too much, as research as shown that optimism and a positive attitude is associated with lower rates of coronary heart disease in both women (2009) and men (2001), less likelihood of death (2004) and better health overall (1988).
Antonie van Leeuwenhoek was a Dutch fabric salesman who made his own microscopes. They were so powerful he saw things nobody had seen before: a world of microscopic "animalcules" invisible to the naked eye.Initially nobody believed his reports, but he went on to document many microscopic life forms for the first time in history. And when people say fracking, what do they mean? Non-conventional gas extraction sometimes involves the use of a "fracturing" process, but not always. The Brontosaurus is a well known dinosaur, which was soon after discovery relegated to an incorrect synonym: its species had already been described elsewhere and named Apatosaurus. But new evidence suggests that the Brontosaurus is a genuine species of Diplodocid, and is once more recognised as a valid taxon for a real exitinct species.Mice are certainly not extinct, and while we may have been taught that to be really quiet is to be as quiet as a mouse, but they certainly make enough noise to attract the attention of other mice. Ultrasonic songs inaudible to the human ear vary between mouse breeds, and in certain circumstances. Male mice call to female mice with songs of varying duration and complexity depending how far away they are.And back to the subject of extinction, Tamsania's Swift Parrot is in danger of being wiped out due to habitat loss in its natural territories. We find out how we can donate directly to a program to help reverse their decline.
