Madison McKinney

Founder

LockHERoom™ Podcast/Blog

Since a little girl, I have always felt deeply connected to sports in a way that was indescribable. I grew up in a small town by the name of Cartersville, Georgia. With not much to do, I was elated when I picked up my first basketball at the age of five. They say it is hard to have memories of early childhood, however I vividly remember not being able to sleep the day before my 6U coed rec game.  Shortly after, I played my first game at 3rd base. As I grew, sports grew with and on me. Aside from being 'Madison' I was the basketball player, the softball player. That became a part of my identity. From working out with guys twice my age, to traveling across the state to various skills camps I always saw my future being a collegiate athlete. My eight grade year, the beginning of my recruiting process, I fractured my foot the first game of the season. That was the first time I realized that I would not be able to play forever, and that was also the time I decided that I never wanted to be detached from the sports world. It was at that moment

True healing requires a consciousness and constant work. Every day. For the rest of your life without loved one.

We live in a world of stereotypes.  Here’s one of them: Black women have attitude, take any guff from anyone and are always strong. No one is always strong. People have weak moments. Bad things happen in life, and we all experience tragedies.

So when an African-American woman is struggling grief and loss - how is her healing journey different, than that, of her Caucasian counterpart. My guest Rev. Dr. Brooke Brimm will discuss the cultural grief of Black Women.

Philosophy

"My practical view of the function of psychotherapy is as a journey of self-exploration by the client, meant to increase his/her level of self-understanding and self-awareness. I as the therapist act as the guide or facilitator of this journey. It is not my practice to act as the self-appointed expert on the client's life who effortlessly dispenses advice to the client on what he/she should be thinking, feeling, and doing. I do not readily provide answsers/solutions to client questions/problems regarding themselves and their lives. From my experience, clients are much more inclined to own and operate an answer/solution if it is of their own creation. On some level of consciousness based on his/her experience in life, I believe the client is in possession of the answers to his/hers questions. It is my desire to make those answers explicit. My goal to help clients identify, develop, and mobilize their own resources to successfully solve problems and meet challenges."

Champion-Amaker's position as a high school athletic director has afforded her the opportunity to be intimately involved in the evolution and transition of a student athlete into high school to the post secondary opportunities.  Due to the diverse makeup of uninformed high school student athlete, a variety of strategies, systems, and infrastructures has to be implemented to ensure the needs, development and progression of the participants can be obtained. The voices of former and current student athletes who share the pros and cons of their journey has heightened her awareness pertaining to the  support systems required for the healthy personal growth and success to be achieved.

She established her athletic consultant company after my tenure as a high athletic administrator to address the needs of parents and student athletes was not so easily navigated by individuals and entities that are involved. Her perspective of athletics is in depth as it comes from the various lenses from which I gained by experiences.   The knowledge gained from these various positions and the dynamics that each sport offered gave me great insight to be able to help the next student, parent or family through the process and enjoy it along the way.
