I had the great honor of spinning a set on the legendary Bushwick collective, The Beatminerz (Evil Dee & Mr. Walk) Radio show on Beatminerzradio.com for their Thanksgiving Mixmaster Weekend special. This is the recording (that i unfortunately had to rip from the ustream video because the original file wouldn't play for whatever reason. This is part 1 of a 2-hour set. This has a bunch of joints from my new album with E Tha 5th, THE MARC SMITH LP. Unique, new classic, raw, banging' hip hop music. Chock full of many other goodies as well. Eargasm.
Aside from the occasional volume fluctuation and record skips, this was a nice opening set i did at the ART OF LYRICS hip hop showcase in Harlem. You already know.......BANG OUT!

Directly after a i ripped the stage down in my live hip hop performance a few weeks ago in the UK, i got on the set and this is the result. An all vinyl 90's classic hip hop set for a hungry, festive England crowd. Enjoy as if you were there.
While on my mini tour of a few cities in the UK over a week and a half recently, i was asked to spin an impromptu set of dance music at the Marisco Disco's Sunday Disco Sessions on a sunday evening. Here's it is now for the world to enjoy. Bang out.

Here's a live set i did filling in for my good friend and great dj, C- Reality at his cultivated weekly saturday gig in Newark, New Jersey. Nothing new commercial, just dope grooves of varying types. If you're in that city on a saturday night, his party is the place to go if you're looking for a different classic vibe where you won't hear all the same radio songs and same 'ol, same 'ol classics. Put this on and you'll see what i'm talking about. Me and C are "off the grid but balanced" djs by choice. It's better that way. There's sooooo much music in the world to have a night out confined to just the familiar. Let's go!!!!!!!

Part 2 of 3 of my Bobby Busnach original cut and splice tape re-edits from his archives. Before the computer-kinda-does-it-for-you digital revolution set in, this is back when all edits were manually manipulated in a studio. Get ya vibe and dance on. Classic material.
If you're familiar with my "Qualified Elegant" mixes on my page, the girl in the picture for this mix should look familiar. Again it's Geraldine Visco (Gerry Visco), a very good friend of mine from her days as a fastionista here in New York City in the 70's. The photographer is Bobby Busnach. I met Bobby though Gerry's connection online, and came to find out that he was a studio rat, producing machine back in the cut and splice tape days. He also worked at the famed Rock and Soul Record store in manhattan with Walter Gibbons and other like minded music heads who also dabbled in the studio.
Bobby graciously gave me a lot of his re-edits that he's done over the years, and i felt the need to put them in mix form to share with the world. This was a track on a special promotional cd for a NYC CMJ event called BEAM (Bristol Exchange Of Arts & Music). Artists from Bristol, England and Brooklyn New York came together for a night of performances at the Knitting Factory in Brooklyn, New York of 2012. This track "Mean Muggin" features the incredibly talented mc Jesus Mason, formerly of the group Sputnik Brown. DL, and pass around.

Since the crew is internationally minded, they've managed to start doing challenges in their chapters in other countries. I invited the crew to bring some of the international mc challenge champs from France (MC Warlock), Germany (Jorg), and England (Stig Of The Dump) to the Underground Railroad Show in NYC with the blessing of host J Smooth. They've been in the same spot EVERY SUNDAY NIGHT for the past 10 years. Wrap your head around that for a second. The founding soldiers, Big Zoo, Vice Verses, and Prolific One (shouts to Joey Ty)
embody the foundation of hip hop lyricism and have cultivated a weekly open mic into a global connection over the last ten years with chapters in Africa, France, Germany, and England for starters. I decided to post this recording from the show i was on for 11 years on my podomatic page because it showcases the standards of lyricism that i co-sign, and gives a lesson of sorts to new jack mcs who don't bring the flow right because they're busy copying someone else's style to try to remain relevant. There are written rhymes here.....but most of it is freestyle/of the heads flow. A skill that many try but only a certain percentage are able to really showcase. It seems very wierd to say this in 2012, but there are really NO underground hip hop parties where djs spin only vinyl in New York City. The place where hip hop culture was born, does not cater to the those who still spin original copies of releases on vinyl. We all know the computer dj and digitalism in general has taken over the world, and because of that, and MY love for records, i decided to attempt to start a monthly event where the djs play all vinyl from the golden age of hip hop (say generally, '88 to about '97) called RECORDnition. Recognition of records....for the slow to catch the meaning of the name. ha ha. This is my opening set from the first one on Sept. 22nd. I didn't really know what kind of turnout to expect, and i must say....it was a bit overwhelming. I know there are many others out there who share my same struggle with still finding places to go where the music is specialized what you want, and how you want it....plus the people attending are super cool. Another bangin', all vinyl set of lost, seldom heard, and known classics from my performance at the "Salute The DJ" event as a part of the 8th annual Brooklyn Hip Hop Festival @ the Public Assembly Hall in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. The energy was casual and ears were definitely open. Big up to my homey Monk One for making the connection to get me in this spot. Aside from the occasional skip of records in this set, it's definite another Emskee-style head-nodding trip. There are some curses some if you have kids around when listening, "rabbit ears" (as Vince Vaughn would say) would be the move. Bang loud and share with others.
Big up to my man Old Chris (an incredible record collector and overall super cool dude) and his man Oscar for the invitation down to their show to spin all 45's. Before this mix, i can't even remember when i even touched my 45 records last, so going through my OWN records looking for stuff to play was an adventure. I stand behind the idea of searching for and playing music that is off the beaten path of what regular radio and other modern media outlets offer, and gives the listener of my mixes an alternative to another world of sounds. This mix also includes the new banger that my group (The Good People - www.thegoodpeoplemusic.bandcamp.com) and Dj Format from the UK came together (PAUSE) to make. A joint called "Marisco". dedicated to the UK's longest running nightclub at 45 years, down in a magical southern coast of England town called Woolacombe.

I mostly post my many dj sets on here, but every once and awhile, i'll deviate and give you something else from my talent arsenal that's equally enjoyable. Last month, i was honored and excited to fly to England to be apart of the celebration of the longest running club in the United Kingdom (45 years), the Marisco Disco in Woolacombe. If you frequent my page, you've probably seen recordings of sets i've done in past years down there. It's a bonafied music loving surf town, which has turned into a "must play" for many djs in their travels.
Since it was the 45th anniversary, it was suggested that i bring my partner in The Good People (The Saint) down as well to do the first ever hip hop show at the club to bolster the celebration.
In association with the awesome label that's releasing the Good People album in July (DWG - Diggers With Gratitude), plans and ideas were exchanged over time and we got everyone down to Woolacombe to create an incredible energy that will be talked about for a time to come. One of the last songs during the Good People performance you'll hear on this, we recorded a song called "Marisco" in homage of the clubs long running history. Me and my man C-Reality (the Grand Organix crew) did a show on WBAI 99.5fm in NYC, spinning raw underground, classic hip hop from about '97 to 2007, during a 24-hour Hip Hop Takeover special. Joints that have been gone and forgotten about, but resonate in our deeeeep crates. It was a 2-hour show, and this is my set from the 1st. There are a few 7 to 10 second dropouts during this mix, as i had to grab a copy of the show from the radio stations often unreliable website re-stream. If you can get past that, this is a really good representation of where good hip hop....contrary to the non-inspiring joints of the present day mainstream crap. We always wanted to do something in a live venue, but the opportunity never materialized. Finally, on friday, May 25th, 2012 myself and other long time crew members will do the damn thing at a spot called Bellwether in Brooklyn, with very special guest, Easy Mo Bee. Crazy.
This was a promo set i did the friday before the party on the really dope music appreciation show,"A Downtown Affair" hosted by some really good guys Mike and Alex. Peace all. Here's another classic mix from my vast vaults of cd's and mini-discs that i get a chance to wade through every now and then. This is a mix that was supposed to be apart of a project called The Together Brothers which was myself, the infectious Qool Dj Marv, and brainiac of music, Dj Monk One. Three monster tastemaker djs in New York. If you're not familiar with any of us, we play music in sets that others may back away from because it's not deemed cool or hip, and hits you rigt in your spirit.
This was supposed to be one of a 3 mix package, with each of us contributing one to promote and sell. The project never materialized and this mix wound up sitting around in my cd book. I'm posting it now. Enjoy the vibes. Off the beaten path disco, funk, and classic hip hop. Done back in 2005.
If you're over 35 and were fortunate enough to grow up in New York, or the tri-state area (which includes New Jersey and Connceticut) you know were lucky enough to experience radio at it's most cutting edge finest in the late 70's, 80's, and into the mid 90's. Urban contemporary radio showcased a variety of black music styles. WRKS 98.7 KISS-FM was one of the flagship stations in New York that was home to many legendary personalities which i'll list right now so you can look them up and know the history i speak of. Chuck Leonard, Ken "Spider" Webb, Jeff Foxx, Barry Mayo, J.R. Vans, Mary Thomas, Yvonne Mobley, Jeff Foxx, Fred Buggs, and Gary Young. Of course on actual dj side there's the Godfathers who brought hip hop to the airwaves. Jazzy Jay and Afrika Bambaataa who paved the way for Kool Dj Red Alert's legendary run. I speak of all this with such fondness and pride because as of 12:01 monday morning April 30th, KISS-FM as many know it will be no more. ESPN sports radio will take over the 98.7 frequency, bringing an end to it's legacy as a black radio force in NYC. The show that i've been blessed to be on for 11-years, J Smooth's Underground Railroad, decided to pay one final tribute to KISS on the friday before it goes off the air. J called me up and specifically asked if i'd represent. I was honored and more than happy to. So here is the recording of the set, which is made up of records that i heard KISS play first, break in, or just run in rotation over the years. I hope you enjoy listening to it as i had playing. There's no way i could play everything i wanted to play within the 40 or so minutes i had....so with that, salute the memories of a storied run of 98.7 KISS-FM. The lipstick log will never be forgotten.
I just got the incredibly disheartening news that the legendary black radio station 98.7 KISS FM in New York City, owned by Emmis Broadcasting has been sold, and the ESPN network will assume the frequency beginning sunday morning, April 29th at 12:01. I, like many over 35 heads, grew up on KISS fm with radio PERSONALITIES that made you feel connected to them, not like the programmed sheep that most radio jocks are now. Mary Thomas, Yvonne Mobley, Gary Young, Bob Slade, Anne Tripp, Kool Dj Red Alert, Chuck Chillout, Tony Humphries, The Latin Rascals.....the list goes on. I shared a special part in KISS history, as i dated the infamous Wendy Williams for a year and half while she was a dj at the station, and did several promos for her and others that were actually played in rotation. Some of these were recently released on the DWG label in the UK, but i want to share some of these with you here on my podomatic account. R.I.P. KISS FM. Thanks for the memories.

Peace y'all. It's been a loooooong minute since i've done any kind of djing,or recording any crib-made mixes. Just had my first son a few months back so i've been on dj hiatus. LOL
I'm slowly getting back into the flow, and two crates of rock records that were given to me from someones basement recently inspired me. I decided to make a mix of anything i thought was good or sounded interesting of that genre. It's not for everybody, so if you dig it, rock on. Peace.
Here's another episode of the 11-year running classic and obscure dance music program, the Rare Radio Show that i co-founded and hosted throughout the years since 1999. This was a 10-hour special, and this is my opening set from that show. Straight classic NYC underground club music for the dance floor jones. Me, The Boogieman, Honey Dew Sue, Nydia Inez, Monk One, Uncle Steve McDaniel, & Dj Tomcat played throughout the night in my basement as we provided the soundtrack vibes for my new son Boston's meet and greet pot luck party. From laid back disco/soul/r&b to cumbia to classic disco and underground nyc house music, this is yet another potpourri of great vibes from some of NYC's veteran, power underground music selectors. This is about 3 hours of a 5 1/2 hour marathon. There are a few slight technical problems along the way in the mix, so if you can deal with that, you're in for some great tunes.
It can never be understood when i hear some say there's no good music out there. It's all over. You just need people like us to give it to you whenever possible. DL, bump and pass.
I have the recording from last New Years Day 2011 when i filled in for her as well, but here's last nights New Year's Eve set on WBAI-FM in NYC. If you're not familar with Jeannie Hopper, she's been a staple on NYC radio with consistent underground, eclectic music mixes and very pertinent community information. Not too mention the fabulous boat parties and other functions she's affiliated with. It's always an honor when she contacts me to fill in on her show. I'm posting this mix in support of my man Joey Dicker, the man who runs the infamous Marisco Disco over in England. He is fighting some serious health issues at the moment and i wanted to do my part, over 3500 miles away in NYC since i can't get there, by posting a mix that he (AND my main man Chris Parkin) is directly responsible for allowing to happen. He always makes sure i have a place to stay and am well taken care of every time i've been there. When y'all are checking this mix of music freedom, know that the energy of it as well as prayers and thoughts are traveling to him for a speedy, trouble free recovery. Take a trip back with me to the summer of 2007. Free your mind and your ass will follow. This was 80% vinyl and the rest CD's. I had a few technical problems along the way, AND i did a little impromptu performance during the night as well.

Every chance i get, no matter what kind of music it is, as long as it's good, i'll attempt to provide an outlet for "outside the box" artists projects. The really talented but hardly heard. Expertly mixeed as always wit the on point selections, kick back and enjoy what a solid hip hop show sounds like. Some profanity involved......but that's hip hop. Not sure why this mp3 skips occasionally, but bang it anyway. Peace.
For those that know what the downstairs of the old APT spot in manhattan, ny looked like, this is before the dj booth was built and the turntables were on the end of the bar when you walked in. Looooong time ago. I filled in for the infamous Bobitto Garcia as he asked me to step in while he was out of town. I HAD to rip it down. Those are some important shoes in the NY spotlight to fill.
I just found this cd, which was unmarked, while going thru some old cd books. As soon as i heard it, i knew what it was. Another classic night indeed. Bump this and pass on. You know the drill. It clips at times due to a high mini-disc level. Yes, back when i used to record on those. LOL This was one of two times i filled in for Bob.
I'm proud to say i've been blessed and fortunate to travel to a good amount of places in my life thus far to play/perform music in various forms as a dj/mc.But there is NO PLACE like the magic of the southern coast of England in a place called Woolacombe. It's an out of the way surf town, but the energy and appreciation that they show for guests who swing in to enterain once night falls is unlike anything i've ever experienced (aside from when i spun at the Bloom Festival just outside Bristol, England a few years back for a few thousand music junkies). This set was yet another trip i made down there, the first since 2006, and the reception was radiant and enthusiastic. I only wish i didn't have to travel over 3500 miles to get this love and respect that is absent in the now-dull New York City. I jumped on the mic as well during this set to entertain while playing some of my selections from solo albums and Good People material. Enjoy, blast, and pass. Thanks for listening.
This is the result of a bunch of RECORD/MUSIC LOVING heads getting together in a basement with a loud soundsystem and turntables after the sun's gone down on a festive backyard bbq in Brooklyn, NYC. Recorded this past saturday, this is a potpourri mix of soulful house, 90's energetic underground hip hop, 90's laid back underground hip hop, soul, some disco, and other stuff in between from myself (Emskee), and Dj's Old Chris (formerly Young Chris), Tomcat, The Boogieman, and Mix Greens....not neccessarily in that order. Nothing was planned. It just went down.

So i spun out for the first time in awhile at a swanky place called the So Ho House in the meatpacking district of manhattan, nyc on friday night, March 25th. I was prepared to post the live recording of heat from the set me and my man Monk One were gonna lay down, but the recording was wack and unplayable so i erased it. I decided the next day to just make a mix at the crib of stuff that i had pulled out to play. This is close to what you would have heard if you came out. Thus, the creative "So Ho Demo" title. I once gave the singer Maxwell this cd when he was chillin one night at an old APT. gig of mine in New York City back in 2003. When i saw him again a few weeks later, even though he got my name wrong (he called me "MC SKI" - close enough i suppose), he raved about how dope it was. Now's your chance to see what he was raving about. This is a wide-ranging mix of various genres which dj's should do more often to provide balance for ears that are well-groomed to a mature style of mixing. From reggae tunes, to hip hop, to soul, to commercial oreinted, and other stuff in between....this is a cool rollercoaster ride of music. You'll probably feel like the images in the photo attached. The last part of a live house music set from the Belmont Lounge in New York City back in 2007.
I posted the first parts of this mix awhile ago, but i JUST found the continuation disks. This contains more house music with other nuggets of rhythms and vibes in between. The clientele of the Belmont Lounge has long changed, as it's a college student, rock/electro music spot now. This is back when it still had some flavor. Enjoy the ride.
Oh the memories. Here's a middle-of-the-night, energetic recording of a set i did at the last night of a weekly wednesday night residency that me and a long-time record collecting partner of mine, Dj Monk One, held at the now defunct upscale APT. spot in the meatpacking district of manhattan back in March of 2004. We killed it week after week, pushing the envelope of what could entertain and educate at the same time. If you were never able to make it out to APT., it was an unusual place where people with money AND the artist types could and would co-exist in a nightlife setting. We played the upstairs decks, where the room actually looked like someone's stylish living room. Check out the mix, bump, and pass.
