We often live tangled up with our past experiences, our limiting beliefs, and our states of stress. In order to bring freedom and healing, we need to untangle the knots that limit us. This episode features a new modality and inspirational story to do just that.

For the last twenty years, Angela McKinney has been helping people transform their lives - including her own. As a somatic guide and expert in addiction recovery, Angela created a unique approach to healing from life challenges called The Untangle Method. She is the author of a new book, Untangle: How to Create BIG Possibilities through SMALL changes, was released in October and can be ordered now on Amazon.

Angela was born in Tennessee. At age thirteen, Angela was disowned by her father and sent to live in Los Angeles, where she and her mother survived feeling lost without a home. At fifteen, after winning Star Search, it all became too much for her, engulfing her in a life of chaos and addiction. Her early adulthood recovery efforts have paved the path to help implement hundreds of complex recovery cases across the country. Angela uses humor as a tool to capture the insanity of survival states and highlights “the terror of success” not often spoken of.

Angela says, “I use evidence-based strategies to empower disenfranchised addicts, CEO's, professional athletes, and stay-at-home parents to emerge from hiding and embark on successful living. Untangling builds creative resilience to realize your best life, even if there is a part of you that says you can’t.”

Leigh Richardson has studied human behavior for over 30 years. Her initial focus was on organizational behavior then shifted to human behavior in 2003 after her son had a traumatic brain injury. Anita Pirkle was born and raised in New Jersey and graduated from Purdue University. She was married for 61 years, and has 3 children and 2 grandchildren. They moved to Atlanta 40 years ago, and have been sharing a product called Juice Plus for 25 years. With all the many nutrients Anita has been putting in her body, she was in excellent health. That is until Christmas Day when 7 members of her family were exposed to Covid-19. Only 3 of them were hospitalized. Her daughter, Dana, her husband, Carl and herself. It was one of the most terrifying experiences she has ever had. Dana was released in 6 days and Anita was released in 14 days. Her husband, Carl, died after 8 days. One night she heard her doctor tell a nurse that her lungs were not sustaining the oxygen, and he didn't think Anita would make it. She awoke at 2:00am in a sheer panic. Carl had just died and Anita knew she had to survive. She asked God and Carl to help her lungs heal and pour healing light over her body. Anita then went to sleep. The next morning she woke up a different person. It was a miracle. She knew she was going to survive and go home. The doctors and nurses were amazed at how much Anita had changed. From lying in bed dying to sitting up living. Everyday she grew stronger. Her mission is to tell people they have choices. Being grateful for everything puts you in a different frame of mind.

Age & Retire With an Open Mind Aging and preparing for retirement can be sensitive topics to navigate through with your parents or even your peers. With the help of my guests, Amanda Lambert & Leslie Eckford, these grim topics became more pleasant by discussing the variety of ways the elderly can be taken care of. In this episode, we take a look at the negativity we associate with the word “old” and how we should all work to make sure the elderly feel seen and heard.

Leslie Eckford is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker and RN with a long practice in mental health and geriatric health. She is co-creator and co-author with Amanda Lambert of mindfulaging.com and three books. Leslie has been a long distance caregiver to her aging parents. As her own children become young adults, Leslie is determined that the "empty nest" is the "empty NEXT."

Amanda Lambert grew up on the east coast and went to undergraduate school at University of Massachusetts in Boston. She migrated to Salt Lake City, Utah over 25 years ago and received her Masters at University of Utah. She spent several years working as a geriatric care manager and professional guardian and started her own geriatric care management company about 4 years ago. In addition to co-authoring three books with Leslie Eckford, Amanda is a full time freelance writer on topics related to aging, end of life, caregiving, home accessibility and senior living. Amanda’s particular area of interest is how we can age with good mental and physical health. Her parents live in Salt Lake City in independent senior living and her sister is here as well. She enjoys hiking out with her trainer, reading, family time and exploring healthy cooking ideas.

"We all have wishes. We have a life that we wish for, and we have a life based in reality. And when we put a lot of effort and thought we can make a life that is closer to our wished for life, but it doesn’t always work. One of the things that Amanda and I are really emphasizing in this book is you have to keep an open mind. Some things are going to fit, and some things aren’t.” Leslie Eckford

"You may fantasize about this wonderful living situation, and then you may find that there are parts of it that you just didn’t anticipate and that’s just part of the process” Amanda Lambert

Meditation, Relationships & Emotional Intelligence Many have attempted to answer the age old question: What is the secret to a happy marriage? Our guest on this week's episode of SecondWind, Bill O’Herron, reveals how we can enter relationships with a better understanding of ourselves, and sustain these relationships with emotional intelligence. What we take away from this conversation is a greater understanding of the significance our childhood plays in our romantic relationships, and the role that masculine and feminine energy play in the human experience.

Bill O’Herron is a corporate executive and practicing clinical social worker (weekends and evenings). He tries to use all the insights and experiences that he has garnered from the 46 countries he visited, his 34 years of financial sales management, 24 years of marriage and parenting 3 amazing daughters, 15 years of counseling clients, and most importantly his 8,500 hours (25 years) of meditation, to help his clients better understand themselves, deepen their relationships, and fully complete their lives. Bill grew up in NJ, earned a BA in English from Middlebury College and an MSW from Columbia Univ.

O’Herron has been researching self in relationships for 20+ years. All the work they have done shows that relationships fail for one single reason: a lack of understanding of one’s own emotions and reaction patterns created in childhood. His work with archetypes demonstrates also that relationships are not a single experience or dyad between two people, but are eight unique relationships occurring at the same time.

Three key concepts Bill uses which helps accelerate his client's work on themselves are Stand in the Fire, 2nd Law of Thermodynamics at Home, and Relatus.

O’Herron believes our marriages start in 4th grade, when our limbic-emotional body learned, absorbed, and inherited our parents’ lives and experiences, and that we are all actually married to our own old, unconscious emotions more so than to our spouse.

Bill believes that working on oneself, which will automatically improve the dynamics of all our relationships, is the most important thing in life, and that what we do right now in reaction to others echoes through posterity, changing who our grandchildren's children become.

“Women see the boy inside the man, and they see the man inside the boy-adult, and they’re trying to get him to wake up.” Bill O’Herron

What You’ll Learn from This Episode:

  • A deeper appreciation for feminine energy
  • Why Bill doesn’t initially ask people he counsels to love themselves
  • The reason that women should observe their partner’s relationship with their mother
  • Why men feel the need to hide their sensitivity
  • How to balance your rationality with your emotions and gain emotional intelligence
  • Why marriages between young people are more likely to end in divorce

Finding Enjoyment in the Next Stage of Life As women age, we’re often pushed aside and forgotten about as if our value diminishes with time. Our guest for this week's episode, Valerie Albarda, has made it her mission to remind aging women of our worth, and make sure we are seen and heard in a society that dismisses us. She talks about how the different aspects of our identity, namely race, age, and gender, can play a role in what she calls the “invisible woman syndrome”.

Valerie Albarda likes to think of herself as a midlife women's advocate. She tries to inspire women to embrace this time in life, and to squash the notion that just because we're midlife, it doesn't mean we have to be in crisis. She was recently diagnosed with secondary progressive multiple sclerosis, and that changed her world. Even with this, she didn't consider herself in crisis. Valerie began researching and reading about MS so that she can become an advocate and ally for those also dealing with the disease, especially midlife women. “I'll get even more granular: I advocate for midlife women of color who have MS because the medical community often treats us as disposable people; collateral damage in the healthcare system. I don't like that.”

Albarda is also a TEDx alumna. She recently completed her Talk in October 2020, and it started airing in February. “My talk, "The Invisibility Trifecta," tackles the invisible woman syndrome as it relates to women of color (hence, the Trifecta: midlife women of color). I grew up in Maryland with my parents and four sisters. I didn't go to college straight out of high school. At the age of 37 1/2, I was determined to get my degree. I completed an accelerated degree program in 2.5 years and walked across the stage to get my BS in Management 2 months shy of my 40th birthday.”

Currently, by day she works as a senior writer for a large home improvement retailer. On her off hours, She devotes most of her time to her website, Midlife-A-Go-Go, her podcast, MS work and spending time with her family. She’s a wanderlust at heart and she can't wait to embark on her next adventure.

What You’ll Learn from This Episode:

  • Valerie’s journey through her multiple sclerosis diagnosis
  • How to enjoy midlife and skip the crisis
  • Why women in their midlife stage tend to feel like a they’re a “disposable demographic”
  • Steps you can take to redefine who you are
  • What the “invisible woman syndrome” is and how race can exacerbate this issue
  • Why Valerie wants both midlife women and other demographics to hear her message
  • What it is like to have health concerns be dismissed, and why you should always be your own biggest advocate

It’s easy to forget about practicing self-care when your busy schedule prohibits you from adding much more to your to-do list. On today’s episode of SecondWind, we have Hope Flansburg on to discuss everything relating to self-care from body positivity to work-life balance. She reminds us that making time for ourselves doesn’t have to be such a time consuming task.

Hope is an author, Wellness and Self-Care Educator, and owner of Hope for Health Wellness. She plants seeds of hope by teaching others how stress impacts their emotional and physical health, while sharing complimentary layers of self-care to promote healing. She wants to help you decrease stress, anxiety, and improve overall health to live the quality of life you crave free from continued symptoms and deteriorating health.

Hope began writing sixteen years ago as part of her own healing process. She now uses her fiction romance novels to bring a voice to the exact scenarios that break us. Through stories of vulnerability, courage, and healing, these books can be used as a tool for social emotional awareness, and to inspire and empower others. With an exquisite mix of suspense, darkness, lightness, and personal growth, she sends the message that existing is reason enough to receive abundance in this life, and out of our darkest times can come our greatest achievements.

You hear all the time that it is really important to own our “no”, but I think what's even more important is that we know what our “yeses” are. If we can define our yeses, it’ll help us find that balance of where we’re giving our time, where we’re giving our energy, and so we don’t get led to burn out and overwhelm all the time to where we feel that we aren’t showing up and giving the love that the people around us deserve as well” - Hope Flansburg

  • What it was like becoming a single parent with twin girls
  • How to turn your darkest times into something great
  • Why you should start manifesting and create vision boards during tough life transitions
  • How Hope incorporated her love of love, spirituality, and self-help into a novel
  • Our society is impacted by the “disease of being busy” or stress and anxiety
  • We tend to focus so much on loving others more than loving ourselves
  • How Hope helps those who feel their busy schedule prevents them from practicing self care
