For episode 87, I had the privilege of interviewing Ken Krsolovic, co-author of the great book League Park, The Historic Home of Cleveland Baseball 1891-1946.

I first heard of League Park when my grandma talked about seeing Babe Ruth play there when I was a kid. Odds are other kids born before 2000 in the Cleveland-area heard similar stories from grandparents. As a baseball fan, I love reading about and seeing pictures of these old stadiums, often nestled in neighborhoods with houses and small businesses all around.
Unlike many old stadiums, remnants of League Park remained after the Indians left. It was used as a practice facility for the Cleveland Browns and amateur baseball. The facility fell into a state of disrepair, until efforts were made to renovate the field, which re-opened in 2014.

For this episode, I had the pleasure of re-connecting with Coach Matt Kramer from Wilmington High School Coach Kramer was on episodes 25-27 several years ago.
Coach Kramer is the co-author of the great book The Best-Laid Plans of a High School Basketball CEO, which he wrote withlegendary Ohio High School Basketball Coach Randy Montgomery (the book is temporarily out of print, but will be available again soon). Coach Kramer wrote the book to document his journey and provide a resource for up and coming coaches.
Coach Kramer has had quite the coaching journey since we spoke last. Coaching in Georgia, he coached elite D1 high school players and played at a national level. He returned to Ohio and was named Wilmington coach in spring 2019.

The Kokosing Valley School is based on the Sudbury School Model founded in 1968. It is a model based on freedom, self-paced learning, mixed peer ages, play, interest exploration, and democratic processes.
It is in fact nothing short of a miracle that the modern methods of instruction have not yet entirely strangled the holy curiosity of inquiry; for this delicate little plant, aside from stimulation, stands mainly in need of freedom; without this it goes to wreck and ruin without fail.

Matt A. Mayer serves as President of Opportunity Ohio. Previously, Mayer wrote and spoke on national security and federalism issues as a Visiting Fellow with The Heritage Foundation. His Heritage federalism work earned the runner-up prize in the 2012 Better Government Competition. Mayer has been a national policy leader for more than a decade.
Mayer is the author of three books. Mayer’s first book, Homeland Security and Federalism: Protecting America from Outside the Beltway (with Foreward by the Honorable Edwin Meese III), argued for reversing the nationalization of homeland security by returning power to states and localities. His second book, Taxpayers Don’t Stand a Chance: Why Battleground Ohio Loses No Matter Who Wins (And What To Do About It), exposes systemic problems that have made Ohio fall from a national leader to a laggard. His third book, The Founding Debate: Where Should the Power Over Our Lives Reside?, highlights to top five arguments from the Federalist and Anti-Federalist, as well as excerpts from ten key Supreme Court cases, to help readers decide where they think the power should be.
Prior to his public policy work, Mayer was a senior official at the U.S. Department of Homeland Security under the leadership of Secretaries Tom Ridge and Michael Chertoff where he provided DHS leaders with policy and operational advice as the Counselor to the Deputy Secretary and where he headed the $3.5 billion terrorism preparedness office charged with developing initiatives to transform America to meet the demands of a post-9/11 environment.
Mayer came to DHS from Colorado where he served Governor Bill Owens as the Deputy Director for the Department of Regulatory Agencies. Mayer co-developed Colorado’s Regulatory Notice system that utilizes electronic mail to notify stakeholders of all proposed regulations before those regulations become final. The Regulatory Notice system earned the Denver Business Journal’s 2003 “Innovative Product/Service Award” for making government more transparent and accountable.
Prior to joining Governor Owens’ team, Mayer served as a deputy in Colorado Senator Wayne Allard’s reelection effort in 2002, and ran a widely hailed congressional campaign for a first-time candidate. As a result of his campaign work, the Colorado Statesman selected Mayer for its 2002 “Rising Star Award.”
Mayer was a 2007 Lincoln Fellow with The Claremont Institute for the Study of Statesmanship and Political Philosophy and a 2006 American Marshall Memorial Fellow with the German Marshall Fund of the United States. In September 2005, The Ohio State University Alumni Association awarded Mayer the William Thompson Oxley Award for early career achievement. I came across Laura's work while reading Episode 7 guest Gene Logsdon's weekly blog post. In this post, Mr. Logsdon referenced an event discussing an upcoming Urban Shepherd program. I spoke to Laura a few days before this event.
Laura's purpose is the result of two of her interests, the environment and sheep. One mission is to have homeowners use their yards as pasture, rather than using lawn mowers, as part of a neighborhood grazing program.

In a legendary career as an amateur player, professional player, and professional baseball management, George Sisler set many records and was regarded by his peers as one of the all-time greats. After his playing career ended, Sisler faded from the limelight and many fans' memories. Rick Huhn took a look at why this happened at the behest of Sisler's son George Sisler Jr. Rick has compiled an outstanding biography with great detail that any baseball fan will love.

I first met Dave as fellow students at Bowling Green State University. Like Dave, I initially started out interesting in sports broadcasting, but then I chose a different path. I did have the pleasure of meeting Joe Tait with Dave when Mr. Tait came to campus.
A couple of years ago, I was visiting family in Northeast Ohio. I tuned into 850 AM to hear some Cleveland sports talk. I heard Dave talking, and I got such a kick listening to him and his enthusiasm.
In his fantastic book The Greatest Salesman In The World, Og Mandino listed ten commandments for success. The third commandment was "I Will Persist Until I Succeed". As you will hear in the podcast, Dave embodies this virtue as well as any person I have ever known. He will share some personal stories about his health and his dedication to his craft that has led to some unique, valuable experiences in his profession.

For Episode 17 of the Outstanding Ohioans show, I had the pleasure of interview Don and Tracy Popp, a father-daughter combination who own and operate Don Popp Honey in Hamilton, Ohio.
Don began keeping bees in 1995 and the business has shown spectacular growth. Last year, Don Popp honey produced 95,000 pounds of honey from 500 hives. The product is known for its high quality and does not last long on the shelves in stores like Jungle Jim's and Krogers.

In our first interview, we shared Dr. Burson's incredible journey and discussed his recently published an extraordinary book The Golden Whistle: Going Beyond: The Journey To Coaching Success. His career included teaching academic classes, playing and coaching a variety of sports at the collegiate level, assisting fellow Ohioan Bob Knight with the 1984 U.S. Olympic team, being featured in Sports Illustrated as the "Great Disseminator" of the famed Princeton Offense, serving as president of the National Association of Basketball Coaches, and serving as a consultant and business owner continuing to serve the game.

The Huggins family is well-known in Ohio for excellence in basketball. Larry's father Charlie Huggins is a legendary Ohio high school Hall of Fame coach. Brother Bob Huggins is the current head coach at West Virginia University with an incredible record as a college basketball coach after playing at Ohio University and West Virginia. Brother Harry played at Rice University, and Larry excelled on the court for The Ohio State Buckeyes.
During Charlie Huggins' coaching career, he developed the Eastern Ohio Sports Complex in Sherrodsville, Ohio with reknowned Pennsylvania high school basketball coach Ed McKluskey. In 2000, Larry bought this business from his father and talks about the history and development of the complex.

McGuffey's Eclectic Reader, were the standard reading, english, and grammar textbook in elementary schools and one-room schoolhouses across the country from 1836-1920's and are still is used by some groups, particularly homeschooled students today.
Professor McGuffey was a famous educator who worked at Washington College, Miami University, Ohio University, and the University of Virginia during his famous career. He was also an ordained minister active and served his communities in this capacity.

For episode 7 of The Outstanding Ohioians show, I had the privilege of interviewing Gene Logsdon, the well-known "Contrary Farmer". Gene has authored 30 books, written for many farming journals, and his popular blog "The Contrary Farmer".
During the interview that will stir your soul, Mr. Logsdon will reminisce about growing up and returning to Upper Sandusky, being raised in a charming rural lifestyle, giving the Seminary a try, becoming a writer, raising a family, and recently fighting a battle with cancer that made him look at life through a different lens.
Mr. Logsdon is best recognized through his writing as an advocate for garden and small-scale farming, along with sharing pieces of farming history. His writing is often the result from his own small farming operations or talking to others.

I interviewed Laura Bullock, Volunteer Director at the Sherman House and Museum in Lancaster, Ohio. The Sherman House and Museum is part of the Fairfield County Heritage Society.
