Leaving an unhealthy church rarely ends the pain. Your friends stay, the leaders keep going, and somehow you become the difficult one. ➟ ➟ Narcissism in the church is one of the hardest things to name, especially when the pastor looks godly on Sunday and something still feels deeply wrong. In this episode of Shepherd's Heart, Stewart and Alycia White sit down with therapist and author Chuck DeGroat, who wrote "When Narcissism Comes to Church," for an honest conversation about spiritual abuse, church hurt, and what real healing actually looks like.

Chuck has spent more than twenty years doing psychological assessments of pastors and leaders. He explains why narcissism is a spectrum and not just a label. He shows how to tell the difference between a leader having a bad day and a genuine pattern of harm, and why rushing to call someone a "narcissist" is rarely the most helpful place to start. He also shares the warning a seminary professor once gave him that changed the course of his life and his marriage.

This is a conversation for anyone who has carried church hurt they could never fully explain, or quietly wondered whether their leader is actually narcissistic. There is a path toward healing, and it starts in a different place than most people expect.

What we cover in this episode:
➟ Why a "safe shepherd" is the real mark of healthy leadership
➟ The difference between abuse and the trauma that lingers long after it
➟ Why healing is "not microwavable" and what genuine change actually requires
➟ How forgiveness and justice are not the same thing
➟ What almost every narcissistic leader has buried in their own story
➟ How to discern real harm from a one-off mistake

"I'm never working with a narcissist. I'm working with someone who bears the image of God." - Chuck DeGroat

Are you wrestling with church hurt, spiritual abuse, or disappointment in pastoral care and church leadership? In this gospel-centered episode of Shepherd’s Heart, Stewart and Alycia White gently but boldly unpack the crucial differences between a biblical church and a church as business. We explore how unhealthy church structures, CEO pastors, and corporate church models can lead to spiritual trauma, abuse of power, and a crisis of accountability, leaving wounded believers searching for healing, restoration, and trustworthy discipleship.

Learn how to recognize seven clear signs your church may be operating as a business rather than following Christ’s call to gospel-centered care and authentic biblical counseling. We discuss red flags such as NDAs (non-disclosure agreements), church discipline handled as HR, treating members as customers, mega church dynamics, partiality toward influential members, misuse of church discipline, avoidance of church crisis conversations, and prioritizing brand over people.

You’ll gain insight into real biblical discernment; how to spot unhealthy church organizations, navigate church discipline, seek wise accountability, and evaluate your own healing journey. Whether you’ve experienced toxic church leadership, spiritual neglect, or are a leader seeking a healthy church model, Stewart and Alycia point you to the hope of Christ, the comfort of Scripture, and practical next steps for your healing and restoration.

Episode Summary:
* Seven warning signs that point to a business-minded church structure and how these relate to spiritual abuse, trauma, and neglect. * How CEO pastors, mega church growth, and legal tools like NDAs signal a shift from gospel-centered discipleship to corporate priorities. * Why biblical counseling, scriptural accountability, and honest pastoral care must anchor every healthy church. * How to recognize and respond wisely to partiality, power imbalances, and crisis management driven by business interests rather than love for Christ. * Steps for your healing journey: approaching church leadership with grace, processing hurt through a biblical lens, and discerning when it may be time to seek restoration or a new church community.

The essential marks of a truly healthy, biblically faithful church.

Key Scripture:
John 10 highlights Jesus as the Good Shepherd who cares for, restores, and protects His flock, contrasting godly pastoral leadership with the dangers of false shepherds and business-focused church organizations.

If you’ve experienced church hurt, spiritual abuse, toxic church leadership, or deep trauma inside a faith community, this conversation is for you. In this episode, we talk honestly about healing, restoration, boundaries, pastoral care, church discipline, and the painful reality of abuse in church culture. We also explore how the gospel, Jesus, and the Bible speak into grief, loss, betrayal, damaged relationships, mental health struggles, and the long road of recovery after spiritual harm. Whether you are an abuse survivor, a church leader, a pastor, or someone wrestling with faith, spirituality, and what biblical leadership should actually look like, this episode offers clarity, discernment, and hope.

Naomi Wright of beEmboldened shares her story of surviving spiritual abuse and cult recovery, along with practical wisdom for recognizing unhealthy power dynamics, responding to the covering up of abuse, and pursuing real reconciliation where possible. This is a Christ-centered conversation about faith, healing, accountability, discipleship, and finding hope in Christ after church pain.

In this episode:
* Learn the difference between strong, biblical leadership and abusive leadership, and how to recognize red flags in church or ministry relationships. * Understand how spiritual abuse can occur in both extreme settings (e.g., cults) and mainstream churches, and how subtler forms are often overlooked or explained away. * Get a clear, working definition of spiritual abuse, why it flourishes in certain church cultures, and how leaders and systems unintentionally enable it through silencing, neglect, or misplaced loyalty. * Explore the effects of trauma, including why survivors struggle to find language or speak up, and how church responses can either deepen wounds or foster true restoration. * Receive practical encouragement: steps for those hurt by spiritual leaders, ways healthy churches can protect and respond, and counsel for church members struggling to understand and support those wounded. * Hear pastoral advice for discerning healthy versus toxic church environments, and what real biblical accountability should look like among God’s people.

Scripture Foundation:
Ezekiel 34 anchors our conversation. God’s heart is clear—He sees when shepherds harm rather than protect His flock, and He Himself steps in as the Good Shepherd to rescue, heal, and restore. Jesus loves His sheep, calls out false shepherds, and promises justice along with compassionate care for the wounded.

We know that for many, church trauma and spiritual abuse bring pain, confusion, and sometimes despair. If you’re hurting, please know you are not alone and that Christ is near to the brokenhearted. Gospel-centered healing is possible, and trustworthy help can be found.

This podcast is not a substitute for local church shepherding or professional counseling. If your situation is unsafe or urgent, please seek immediate help in your area.

We hope you’ll find wise, gracious guidance, whether you’re a survivor hoping for a path forward or a church leader longing to shepherd Christ’s flock more faithfully.

How can you know when you're actually under spiritual attack? What ways can you discern spiritual warfare from mere physical illness or relational conflict?

In this follow-up episode on Spiritual Warfare, Karl Payne goes into further detail on the ways in which a Christian can discern when they're under attack, and when they are not. If you've ever had moments in your relationships, marriage, or temptations and addictions where you felt like you were almost being pushed toward sin and rebellion against God, you may actually be in the midst of spiritual warfare and not even know it.

For many Christians in the world, today, Satan and demons just seem like superstitious nonsense, or perhaps outdated and expired, no longer relevant to our modern minds. What if we're mistaken? What if there are forces presently at work in the world, seeking to destroy and devour our peace and joy, and take our eyes off of the only One who can help.

In episode 48 of the All of Life Show, Pastor Karl Payne shares his extensive experience and understanding of the issues of spiritual warfare and demonization. Christians need to know that demons are real and active in our world, so we can understand what is happening in our lives, families, churches and communities.

In this episode, we discuss how Karl first got involved with demonization, and what he's learned in over 40 years of experience.

Mothers, Have you ever been so angry with your children that you said or did something you immediately regretted, only to find yourself repeating the same cycle again and again?

Anger is often assumed to be a bad emotion; sinful even. Scripture tells us, however, that we are to be "Angry and sin not", and not to let "the sun go down on our anger". The problem arises when we choose to handle our anger in the wrong way, and direct it toward the wrong place. If you've been a parent for longer than a minute, and a mother in particular, you've likely experienced the type of anger that we discuss with our guest, Natalie Hixson. Natalie is a Christian life coach, and uses her early experiences in motherhood to help other moms overcome mommy burnout and explosive anger. Natalie has been through the gauntlet of parenting woes and lived to tell the tale. Now, she coaches mothers seeking to overcome their own issues with anger, and she does so by directing them to the hope only found in the gospel of Jesus Christ.

We've all be guilty of throwing around terms while assuming others fully grasp what we mean. When it comes the the Christian faith, the gospel is no different.
What does it mean when people say, "The gospel is for all of life"? How does the gospel actually apply to things like marriage, parenting, relationships, counseling, politics, and more? Is it just a resource among many useful tools and resources available? What even is "The Gospel"?

The sooner we grasp the importance of the gospel for the Christian life, the sooner we will see growth that comes from surrendering to the truth of God's word, and the empowerment of the Holy Spirit.
In this episode, we dig into the high-level overview of the gospel, and what it means that the gospel of Jesus Christ is for all of life.

Western society seems hyper-focused on chasing down anything that might promise even just a little happiness, but then quickly dissatisfied and disappointed once they've obtained their objective. The most advanced nations also struggle with some of the highest rates of depression, meanwhile, many poor and emerging nations actually report some of the lowest numbers. How can this be? How can they have joy when they have so little, while those with much are rarely ever satisfied?

On this episode of the All of Life Show, we discuss the differences between happiness and joy, and discover that true joy comes, not from what we have, but from Who has us.

We're back, and we've got some big news to share with you!
When God calls us, He calls us to be faithful, but how often do we ignore or shirk our responsibility toward faithfulness and replace it with simply being comfortable?
In this episode of the All of Life Show, we share about the journey that God has had us on, and where He has led us.

Listening to God's voice and seeking His will is often quite different than we might picture it. We've learned that in whatever we're doing, we must do it in faith. In fact, that's what God is looking for; faith. Apart from faith it is impossible to please Him. That can sound ominous until you consider the implications; when we operate in faith in God, His promises, and, most of all, faith in the finished work of Jesus, we can't NOT please Him! This ends up being wildly freeing! Are you walking in faith? Do you want to?

Is cryptocurrency something that Christians should be involved in? Isn't Bitcoin used for illegal activities? What about the Mark of the Beast?
When it comes to the world of cryptocurrencies, Christians can often find it difficult to know how to approach things from a Biblical perspective.
Tim Bertram decided to bridge the gap by creating TheCryptoChristian.com; a website that specifically tackles the questions and issues that Christians have when it come to Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies, and helps bring clarity to the believer.

In our culture, today, there are so many ideas and voices competing with the voice of Truth found in the Word of God. Consequently, Christians have become more confused than ever with how to think Biblically regarding issues pertaining to gender and sexuality.

In part two of our interview with Professor Nancy Pearcey, we discuss her most recent book, Love Thy Body, and hear how a Christian can walk in love without compromising truth and faithfulness to God's Word.

Nancy Pearcey is the author of Love Thy Body: Answering Hard Questions about Life and Sexuality. Her earlier books include The Soul of Science, Saving Leonardo, Finding Truth, and two ECPA Gold Medallion Award Winners: How Now Shall We Live (coauthored with Harold Fickett and Chuck Colson) and Total Truth. Her books have been translated into nine languages. She is professor and scholar in residence at Houston Baptist University. A former agnostic, Pearcey has spoken at universities such as Princeton, Stanford, USC, and Dartmouth. She was highlighted as one of the five top women apologists by Christianity Today and was hailed in The Economist as "America's pre-eminent evangelical Protestant female intellectual."

What is Truth? How can we know it? In our modern era, we have developed a belief about truth that is, quite simply, not true.
In this episode of the All of Life Show, we interview Professor Nancy Pearcey about one of her books, Total Truth, and discuss the way that the truth has been divided into the realms of sacred and secular, and how Christians must understand and overcome this if we are to be effective.

In a day and age when it seems like even the most faithful of Christians are falling by the wayside and walking away from the faith, the believer needs to be strengthened in their resolve. This is nothing new, however. In fact, the Apostle Paul wrote the letters to the Colossians for just such a thing. Many were being taken captive by persuasive and convincing philosophies of their age, so Paul pointed them back to Jesus Christ, the One in Whom are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge.

It would be natural to assume that if a person claims to be a Christian, then knowing and understanding the Gospel and how to present it is a given! Surprisingly, many Christians struggle to have a Biblical understanding of the Gospel, and the ability to rightly articulate it. How does this disconnect happen, and how can it be improved?

In this episode, we dig into the question, "What is the Gospel", and seek to offer up a framework to properly understand and articulate it.
Special thanks to Greg Gilbert for writing his book, What is the Gospel?. We lean heavily upon his work to help present a framework that all believers can remember utilize in preaching the Gospel to those who have not heard. Not only this, but the believer can better remind and apply the Gospel to every area of their Christian life.

In today's world, Christians have been pressed to accept and adopt the belief that there are two worlds to live in; the sacred and the secular. The sacred is the realm of religious "truth", while the secular is the realm of your public life, which includes everything from science to marriage. The myth is that the two should never meet because they have not business doing so. This isn't what scripture teaches, however.

This year, resolve to make your New Year Resolutions, not only temporal, but something of eternal significance.

In this episode we review a book called, "Try Softer", by author and counselor Aundi Kolber, and talk about how God used this book in our lives at a time when we were feeling overwhelmed by anxiety and depression.

Christians struggle with depression and anxiety just like any other person, but the means we have available to address these things is so much greater. Their is freedom and hope because of Jesus, but that doesn't necessarily mean that everything will be fixed when we'd like it to be.

Just because a person becomes a Christians doesn't mean that they no longer deal with fear and anxiety. In fact, quite often, faith looks more like facing those things head-on. In scripture, we see this illustrated perfectly with the account of Peter being invited out to walk on the water with Jesus. He was the only one who had the faith in the moment to believe that he could step out of the boat if Jesus invited him to do so. Upon stepping out on the water, however, Peter was quickly overwhelmed by the wind and waves crashing down all around him, and began to sink, ultimately, crying out to Jesus for rescue. Jesus pulled him up and brought him back to the boat. This can be a picture of what the Christian life looks like; we step out in faith, get overwhelmed, and cry out to Jesus, but this isn't the failure that one might assume it to be. No, it is Christ working in and through us for the good glory of the Father.

In this episode, we interview Pastor Josh Pasma, the founding pastor of Crossview Community Church in Kennewick, WA. Josh shares about the struggles he has seen in ministry and life, and how it has been Christ who has ultimately been the one with enough faith to bring him through and pull him back out when he has been overcome by the types of fears and anxieties that come with the wind and the waves of life.

In this episode of the All of Life Show, we discuss how the Gospel of Jesus Christ should shape our politics, and act as a framework from which we make our decisions.

It seems like despair can come more easily than joy, these days. Turn on the news or scroll through social media and it is amazing anyone could come away without questioning God and wondering if true justice will ever be served. This is nothing new. In fact, this is exactly where the Psalmist found himself when he wrote Psalm 73. Nearly despairing of trust in God as he noticed that the wicked seemed to have it easier than those seeking to obey the Lord and follow Him. It took a massive shift in focus before the Psalmist was able to discern what the truth was.

In Episode 110 of the All of Life Show we discuss how easily we drift from dealing with sin through the only effective means, that is the grace and gospel of Jesus Christ, and instead try to deal with it through the law of guilt and shame. This can show up in our parenting when we try to coax and manipulate our children into obeying or not sinning through things like shame, manipulation, bribery, and even trying to appeal to their good good nature. All of this falls short and the only lasting solution is the transformative grace of Jesus Christ.
