After spending 20 years as the principal pianist with the United State Army Band, Dr. Joe Holt decided it was time retire to a place that met three criteria: by the water, warmer weather and less politics than Washington D.C., and cultural arts opportunities. He found all of that in Sarasota, Florida.
In 2008, he became the conductor and artistic director of Choral Artists of Sarasota, our region's premier professional vocal ensemble, and his musical tentacles have been far reaching ever since.
This week, you will hear about Choral Artists of Sarasota's upcoming season, but also about a very special performance of a community chorus Joe has organized for the 20th anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attack, sponsored by the Sarasota Ministerial Association. That performance will take place on Saturday, September 11 at 6:00 p.m. at Patriot Plaza on the grounds of the Sarasota National Cemetery. Registration is free for this event.
Do you remember where you were on Tuesday morning, September 11, 2001? Joe Holt does, as he lived across the street from the Pentagon. How has technology impacted his profession and the students?
Who else can say they took their band to Italy 6 weeks before a pandemic broke out?
Should Music Performance Assessment scores be used in music teacher evaluations?

For the past four years, she has been the leader of the visual and performing arts teachers for the the Manatee County School District by helping them devise curricula, working with principals to understand scheduling, and seeking professional development workshops specifically for arts educators, but Julie Hebert quickly realized there was a funding issue for her many initiatives.
So what did she do? She started an organization called the Manatee Arts Education Council that helps raise funds for arts student events, in-service opportunities for arts educators, and recognition for outstanding teachers and leaders in the arts on the Suncoast through its annual program called Arts Alive.
This year's Arts Alive event is Monday, March 29 at the Grove Restaurant in Lakewood Ranch and will recognize 10 of our area's greatest art teachers, leaders, and champions.

Nate and Erin Mayland have been making a living playing on Broadway in pit orchestras for the past decade. Nate plays jazz and orchestral trombone having toured with the Four Tops, the Temptations, the Platters, and Frankie Valli, as well as performing for over 10 Broadway shows including Beetlejuice.
Erin played violin in many Broadway shows and for the Radio City Christmas Spectacular Show with the Rockettes, until she auditioned for this unknown, off-Broadway show called Hamilton, which became her full time job for the past six years.
The two of them have an interesting connection to our Suncoast and performed a masterclass for the music students at the State College of Florida called "The Back Story to Backstage: What Gets You in the Room Where It Happens," stressing the importance of interpersonal skills in the music business industry (plus some "backstage Hamilton" tidbits!).
Their new venture, "Maple and Brass" have helped them reach thousands of young musicians with inspiring stories of the grit and glamour of their musical lives.
Hear Nate and Erin's tale to Broadway and beyond and how they have reimagined their careers since their industry came to a screeching halt in March of 2020.

For the second performance of its 2020-21 season, Sarasota Contemporary Dance will reprise a popular collaboration with renowned harpist Ann Hobson Pilot called SCD + Piazzolla. Performances are November 19-22 at the Historic Asolo Theater, available both in-person (socially distanced, limited capacity seating) and online through the company’s Digital Theater, a professional multi-angle immersive experience. There will be four performances:
Thursday, Friday and Saturday at 7:30 pm, and Sunday at 2 pm.
For more information or to purchase tickets, please visit
sarasotacontemporarydance.org/tickets or call the box office at (941)-260-8485.

The collaboration between Ann Hobson Pilot – the former principal harpist of the Boston Symphony Orchestra – and SCD Artistic Director and choreographer Leymis Bolaños Wilmott will showcase a dynamic passage through the music of Astor Piazzolla, an extraordinary composer of tango music. Pilot’s arrangement for the harp, violin (Marcus Ratzenboeck) and bandoneon (Rodolfo Zanetti), inspired by Piazzola’s compositions, infuses the composer’s melodies into a contemporary mix of tango music, filled with jazz and classical influences. Through an invigorating visual and emotional experience, SCD brings a passionate and poignant performance to the Historic Asolo Theater with Piazzolla

The SCF Musical Theatre Program is proud to offer the 2020 Fall Musical Children of Eden through a pre-recorded scheduled content viewing experience available on
Saturday, November 7, 7:30 p.m.
Sunday, November 8, 2:00 p.m.
Sunday, November 8, 7:30 p.m.

Stephen Schwartz and John Caird’s musical, Children of Eden, casts the beloved biblical stories of Genesis through the personal lens of family. This epic musical starts with the very beginning: the creation of the universe. Father breathes life into his children, Adam and Eve, and learns that the hardest part of being a loving Father is letting go. It’s a lesson that translates into the parenting of Cain, Abel, and Seth – and is reiterated once again as Noah parents his sons Shem, Ham, and Japheth. This joyous and inspiring musical celebrates the difficulty of choice, the importance of passion, the value of questioning, and the pain in allowing those you love to take risks and face the consequences.

The cast of Children of Eden will be wearing "Singing Masks" and following CDC guidelines in regard to social distancing throughout the entire performance.
The production will be filmed on Friday, November 6 in the Neel Performing Arts Center and available for viewing on Saturday, November 7 at 7:30 p.m. and
Sunday, November 8 at 2:00 p.m. and 7:30 p.m.
