When I Come Back, You’ll Know, Know, Know…From her years as one of the Young British Artists who took the contemporary art scene by storm to her achievements as a filmmaker, Sam Taylor-Johnson is a leading lady and her stage is the viewfinder. Her films have tackled historic names and bestsellers, including “Nowhere Boy,” “A Million Little Pieces,” and “Fifty Shades of Grey.” This year, Taylor-Johnson returned to cinemas worldwide with the long-awaited Amy Winehouse biopic “Back to Black” — a stunning look into the life and artistry of one of the 21st century’s most extraordinary musicians.
No Sad Colors…During SCADstyle 2024, history was made when the fashion house Carolina Herrera received its second SCAD Etoile Award. In 2016, Paula Wallace presented the award to Carolina herself, and in the Spring, her creative director successor, Wes Gordon, continued the brand’s award-laden legacy. Wes and Paula reunited to discuss Gordon’s leadership of the beloved heritage brand, his celebrative book "Colormania," and the modern business of fashion.
A Match Made in Marni...In 2016, Francesco Risso became creative director of one of fashion's most beloved brands: Marni. Under his leadership, Marni soared to new heights and unbridled creativity under the "Marnifesto" and the Virginia Woolf saying "Bring no clothes." Laced To Win… SCAD’s newest minor is all about the footwear that moves us most — sneakers. With the sneaker design minor, students from across disciplines design using VR technology and finish their experience with a physical wearable prototype for their portfolio. With this new academic initiative, luminary SCAD graduate Quintin “Q” Williams returned to SCAD as one of the key sneaker design faculty members. Williams built his career in athletic shoes as the lead footwear designer for Power Force Apparel and Peak Sports USA. In 2016, Williams became the co-founder and chief global designer of Q4 Sports, the performance footwear company inspired by the mentality of the fourth quarter that puts athletes first. As Williams prepared to enter the classroom for his first quarter at SCAD, he sat with Paula Wallace to talk about his journey as an alum and all things sneakers.

Irons is the epitome of the traits actors hold most dear and has always been a generous mentor to SCAD performing arts students. In recognition of his monumental achievements in acting and longtime friendship, he received the SCAD Etoile Lifetime Achievement in Cinema award at the inaugural SCAD Lacoste Film Festival. How To Spread A Smile… SCAD alumnus Roberto Carlos Lange takes artistic experimentation and exploration to new heights through his music, films, installations, and visual art. Under his musical moniker, Helado Negro, Lange has become a Latinx icon, advocate, and role model. His bold expression and spirited positivity are undeniable features of his much-loved work. As a proud member of the SCAD Class of 2003, Lange continues mentoring current students and instills a work ethic that can accomplish anything. His work featured on NPR’s Tiny Desk Concert series. He was named a United States Fellow in Music and received a grant from the Foundation for Contemporary Arts. For today’s interview, Lange zoomed Paula Wallace from his current studio at Ballroom Marfa in West Texas. Before a virtual audience, the two examined Lange’s road to success, compositional techniques, and collaborative nature. Lange also fields questions from current SCAD students in a Q&A moderated by sound design sophomore, Angel Chiclana.
The Creativity Behind The Curtain... In the high-intensity world of fashion shows, so much preparation goes into readying a model for the catwalk. Mirroring the stage’s elegance is a delicate choreography backstage consisting of makeup teams, hairstylists, wardrobe assistants, designers, and countless others preparing each model for their moments. Among those dedicated artists is Robert Fairer, our eyes into backstage beauty. As a photographer, his highly influential techniques launched and elevated backstage photography to a highly respected art form. His ability to improvise, communicate, embrace spontaneity, and capitalize on inspiration are essential lessons for any aspiring visual artist. Fairer’s “Unseen” series of books put these images in rich context and tell the full story of particular designer’s shows. President Paula Wallace sat with Fairer in London last November before a live audience to celebrate the launch of his latest photographic tome, “John Galliano for Dior.” The two explore Fairer’s decades of expertise, signals he’s created to direct his shots quickly, and all the candid authenticity of the fashion world’s heart.

Luxury Reimagined... Today on SCADcast, the shepherd of one of the most treasured brands in the luxury fashion market: Bob Chavez. As President and CEO of Hermès of Paris, Chavez led the nearly two-hundred and fifty-year-old fashion house into the 21st century with a bold mix of tradition, whimsy, and the unmatched quality that defines Hermès. He is a veteran of fashion retail – a strong leader who understands every section of the industry from the sketchbook to the stockroom to the sales floor. As the 2019 SCAD Savannah Commencement Speaker, he encouraged students to take the road less traveled and, “not be afraid to start at the bottom, be patient, and do what you love.” That advice continues to ring true in 2020 when determined patience and brave persistence are the keys to success. Paula Wallace recently caught up with Chavez to reflect on the unique qualities of Hermès, our rich history of SCADpro partnerships, and safe management under the pandemic. Brushes With Memory… Representational painter, David Kassan, combines psychology, anatomy, and masterful technique to create paintings that bloom with life. His life-size paintings always drew the viewer in and enwrapped their attention, but one of his latest series, “Facing Survival,” invites viewers to interact with 20th-century heroes. The series of portraits depict survivors of the Holocaust, a study of life that Kassan devoted months of research to and interviews with each subject. The results are tremendous profiles in courage, celebrations of life, and symbols of bravery. Kassan is based in Albuquerque, New Mexico, and his paintings have exhibited in galleries and museums across the United States and private collections around the world. In his most recent in-person visit to SCAD in January, Paula Wallace sat with Kassan to reflect on his gift to the modern visual art landscape and his valued mentorship to SCAD students.

Community Threads... Prabal Gurung is a fashion designer who operates his business and designs with his heart as much as his hands. As a committed environmentalist, humanist, and social advocate, Prabal blurs the lines between commercial and civic duty with powerful results. Just recently, Prabal organized the donation of thousands of protective face masks to New York City hospitals serving at-risk communities. He is committed to effecting change in America and produces eighty-percent of his garments in New York. He also provides tremendous benefit to his home country of Nepal through the Shikshya Foundation. His artistry in fashion is undeniable, and his tenth-anniversary book, "Prabal Gurung: Style and Beauty with a Bite," is a must-have for fashion students and enthusiasts. Paula Wallace interviewed Gurung via Zoom before a live audience of SCAD students as part of SCAD's Guests and Gusto program.

Every Character A Hero... Everyday in her studio, Ruth E. Carter breathes life into the threads that become iconic screen legends. That same master storytelling ability transcends to her words and presence as an artist. Long before Carter's historic Costume Design Oscar win for "Black Panther," she wove magic onto the screen. Her wardrobes dazzle the viewer yet seamlessly fit into shot. She is a leading force in the film and television industry, and her most exceptional work is always surpassed by her next project. SCAD is honored to have hosted Carter to our Atlanta and Savannah campuses, where she mentored eager students and worked with faculty. This particular interview comes from a special Meals on Wheels Atlanta event from fall 2019. The fast-growing program was designed in collaboration with today's special guest, design manager at Google, Mike Buzzard. Buzzard's journey from his design firm Cuban Council to Google resulted in partnerships with NASA, Tom Waits, Francis Ford Coppola, Facebook, and more. He's been a regular partner and mentor for students as part of SCADpro, SCAD's collaborative innovation studio that provides creative solutions to industry challenges ranging from fashion, aerospace, automotive, entertainment, and cutting-edge technology sectors. At the 2017 SCAD Commencement, he received an Honorary Doctorate of Humane Letters, and we are proud to count Buzzard as a member of the SCAD family. Kiran Gandhi, known around the world by her stage name - Madame Gandhi, makes it her mission to share inclusivity and unity through the power of high energy and insightful compositions. She's toured the world and is now live streaming concerts from her studio in solidarity with social distancing. She spoke with Paula Wallace via Zoom as part of SCAD's ongoing Guests and Gusto program, a way to bring industry leaders to SCAD from a safe and secure virtual platform. The Deafening Character Of Silence... The modern pantheon of theatre styles reflects how rapidly art and culture evolved in the 20th century. The era gave birth to some of the finest theatre artists we will ever know, including today's special guest, Robert Wilson. Wilson holds many titles; he's a director, designer, actor, sculpture, author, drawer, and more. He is, in the true sense, an artist. His creative abilities are as endless as the conversations spurred by his iconic productions. He is revered for his masterful interplay of light and shadow, movement and stillness, sound and silence. During SCAD deFINE ART 2020, Wilson enthralled the SCAD community with a performative lecture and rare insight into his creative process. Paula Wallace sat with Wilson after the performance to further discuss his aesthetic, his formative background, and methods for constructing powerful moments onstage.
Raw Beauty... Today on SCADcast, we'll hear from painter, photographer, and sociocultural activist, Marilyn Minter. For close to fifty years, her work has challenged and enlightened — exposed and heightened. Minter visited Savannah as SCAD's 2020 deFINE ART Honoree, and her retrospective exhibition, "Nasty Woman," is currently on view virtually at www.scadmoa.org/exhibitions. During her visit to SCAD, she encouraged students to consider techniques that are underutilized and to question the status quo. Minter's tenacious spirit echoed through her paintings and photographs that adorned the walls of the SCAD Museum of Art, and drew in audiences with their magnetic appeal. Paula Wallace sat with Minter during the deFINE ART festival, and the two looked back on the techniques and materials Minter has mastered over the years, her collaborations with top brands, and her continued advocacy for women's rights.
Passion Worth Sharing … Introducing On Creativity LIVE, presented as part of Guests and Gusto, a new Zoom series that connects SCAD students with the professional creative community during this time of virtual learning. On this episode, SCAD President and Founder Paula Wallace is joined by all-star film and television producer, executive, and head of television at TED, Juliet Blake, whose zest for life and passion for storytelling brings forth voices from every corner of the globe. After decades of producing hard-hitting television, Blake launched her career onto the big screen alongside producing partners Steven Spielberg and Oprah Winfrey with "The Hundred-Foot Journey," starring Helen Mirren. Blake recently announced a deal with Spielberg’s production company Amblin Partners to produce her second feature film, adapted from a memoir, titled "Stolen Time." Her mission to amplify stories never seems to cease, no matter the circumstances. President Wallace reunited with Blake virtually to share Blake’s pro tips for maintaining the creative process and fruitful collaborations during social isolation. Together they reflect on the keys to compelling storytelling and how emerging professionals can prioritize their efforts and abilities to succeed in their career paths. In June 2018, SCAD awarded Blake an honorary doctorate of humane letters for her work in film and television.
Kaleidoscopes Of Joy… “Be inquisitive, be curious and be more creative than ever before.” Through this positive call to action, Mary Katrantzou perfectly encapsulated our “On Creativity” mission statement. Her much admired eponymous label sparks positivity in the eye of the wearer and the beholder through dazzling prints and color palettes. In 2019, SCAD was honored to host an exhibition in honor of ten years of the Katrantzou brand at the SCAD FASH Museum of Fashion + Film in Atlanta. During the exhibition, Paula Wallace sat with Katrantzou to explore the vibrant world of Katrantzou’s design aesthetic, her business model, and how artists can best describe their work to clients, critics, and everyone in between.
The Pupil Becomes The Master... In this episode, Paula Wallace takes us to Paris and the halls of Jean-Paul Gaultier's revolutionary couturier. After fifty years in fashion, Gaultier recently stepped back from the helm of his eponymous fashion label. For many, Gaultier is the master of high fashion. Students everywhere study his designs and find endless inspiration in his expression, but for Gaultier, that honor belonged to his first mentor: Pierre Cardin. In the SCAD-produced animated short documentary, "Le Futur," Gaultier speaks of his beloved mentor, Cardin, as the highest ambassador for global fashion and as an artist whose every move is punctuated by boundless creativity. Gaultier did not fall far from the Cardin tree, and his bold expression amplifies looks unbound by time.
The Climb To Primetime... On this episode of “On Creativity,” Paula Wallace is joined by Emmy Award-winning actor, Eric McCormack. McCormack currently stars as the titular Will Truman in NBC’s juggernaut sitcom, “Will and Grace.” For eleven seasons and two-hundred and forty-six episodes, McCormack has brought charm, dignity, and humor to the airwaves along with his co-stars of television’s finest. His creative journey has brought him from classic American sitcoms to hard hitting dramas like "Travelers" and "Perception." In recognition of McCormack’s singular contribution to television, he was honored with the Impact Award at the 2020 SCAD aTVfest in February. There he sat with Paula Wallace and four SCAD School of Entertainment Arts students for this wonderful dive into his storied career.

Threads Of Time, Clothes That Define... On this final episode of our premiere season, Paula Wallace sits with award-winning costume designer Terry Dresbach. As SCAD prepares for deFINE ART, three days of celebrating the modern masters of visual art, we catch up with a previous deFINE ART guest: celebrated photographer and SCAD alumna, Melissa Spitz. Spitz hit the national stage with her eye opening photography series, "You Have Nothing to Worry About." The photo-scape tells the story of Spitz's mother as she navigates mental illness. Through her exhibitions and Instagram, Spitz touches thousands with similar life circumstances and develops the grounds for honest conversations. TIME Magazine honored Spitz as their 2017 Instagram Photographer of the Year in recognition of her brave artistic expression. In this episode, Paula Wallace celebrates Spitz's successes, delves into the vulnerable nature of her work, and reminds all SCAD alumni that they're never far from the hive.
Sewing Threads of Courage... A new decade brings ambitious plans and inspires creative evolution. For fashion designer Phillip Lim, this couldn't be more true. As his beloved brand, 3.1 Phillip Lim enters its 15th year, Lim is not resting on his laurels. This week at New York Fashion Week, 3.1 Phillip Lim will forgo their runway show in favor of a "house party" at their New York City retail location, using the shift as a springboard to reclaim spontaneity and focus on sustainability. He has always been concerned with the potential footprint of his company and wants to operate a business that is equally focused on the customers he serves as the world they live in. Lim speaks much about the need for spontaneity in his brand and creative process, and his independent spirit consistently portrays this. SCAD is proud to call Lim a friend and honored him with the Etoile Award in 2019. In this episode, Paula Wallace and Phillip Lim examine Lim's career though his upbringing and family life, and how that's affected his creative process through his life.
Built To Last... A defining trait among creative professionals, and certainly one shared by SCAD students, is determined entrepreneurialism.
