Do you have enough time to podcast? How much time does it take? Today Dave Jackson from the School of Podcasting and Jim Collison from the Average Guy Network tackle that question in addition to the following subjects:

What did you give up to podcast?
How much time does it take to create an hour long podcast
How to get the most out of podcast movement
Why you should avoid Windows S (for now)
Be sure to have multiple backups of your podcasting files (Dave uses Backblaze)

You never know who is listening says Cale from www.hamradio360.com who got a message from NASA.

In this episode we also talk about:

Microphone Technique

How do you gauge success if you don't count downloads and money?

How do you make money with a podcast?

FIRST, make a show that is great and obtain an audience. This may take a year or two. (depends on the content, and depends on the niche, it may not take long, but if you have 50 downloads per episode after 30 days, and you're not hyper-niche, start focusing on being GOOD instead of being rich.

It boils down to a few things

Sell your stuff (if you have any)
Sell other people's stuff (affiliate sales that match your audience)
Donations/Patreon
Advertising (automated ads pay almost nothing)
Opportunities (speaking)
Relationships (get to talk to people who NEVER would talk to you)
Free Stuff
How do I see how many subscribers I have in iTunes?

How many people should I expect to join my Patreon?

When you just don't have time to produce a full episode, do you think its better just to skip it, or put out a "placeholder" episode?

[1:40] Jim thinks Facebook live will lead to people tuning out of live streams (Dave agrees there will be a ton of noise).
[4:45] Dave thinks Apple will go to less than 50% of consumption in your stats (other apps will rise up to replace). Jim fixes the bad search by having a website go right to his item homegadgetgeeks.com which point to his apps
[8:10] Jim thinks The bigger shows will get bigger, and more podcasters will drop out then launch. Dave feel there will be more disdain between indie podcasters and professional podcast networks. Jim feels the people started in 2015, 2016 are going to quit as it is hard to get an audience and hard to sustain a podcast.
[9:45] Jim called it a podcast bubble. Dave predicts a return of “podcasting is dead” type of articles where people who are disgruntled that their show didn’t do well will blame podcasting instead of the fact that their show sucked.
[13:25] Jim thinks Will have less media providers (Soundcloud?) where some people who jumped into media hosting will fall. Dave thinks the record labels and ruin it (it needs to be purchased, or shut down).
[15;15] Dave hopes Feedburner will shut down, but he is saying it won’t be. Netflix Audio? HBO Audio?
[17:45] Dave has done the calculations based on previous years, podcast listeners will go up to 40% (according to Edison research) in 5 years we would be up to 48%
[21:05] Dave thinks more companies are going to put up “Walled gardens” where you have to use THEIR PLATFORM to consume specific shows (and Dave doesn’t think this will work).
[27:35] More Tools For Podcasters – More Microphones? How is the Blue Yeti Getting so Much Press? Hear Dave’s view and demo of Blue Yeti
[30:30] Smaller shows will still “Glenn The Geek It” and smaller advertising resources will close due to lack of Advertisers. Free media hosting companies will close

Misto is a cool easy way to mix in Olive Oil into your
cooking
As I am cooking more and more, I need the right tools. Some of
hese recipes talk about spraying your meat with Olive Oil. So I
found a Misto. This thing is cool. You pour in
your Olive Oil about 1/2 way, pump up the canister and spray. Super
easy and it's less
than $10.

Save Time with Amazon Prime
I wasted a night this week running from store to store and not
finding what I was looking for. Then I realized I had an Amazon Prime account, and it
has free two day shipping. So I'm worried saying this. I don't want
you to use this tool to sit on the couch. I want you to take that
20 minutes you saved, and get up and go walking! But I've started
using it. Today I ordered Sunscreen, and a baseball hat after getting too much
sun this weekend. You can pay $10.99 a month, or $99/year ($8.25 a
month), and I have even purchased can goods like Green
Beans. If you plan this ahead (something you don't
need for two days) it's a great time saver. Oh yeah, in some cases
there is no tax (so you save time and money). Check it out
The Six Pillars or
Self-Esteem
I started listening to this book called The Six Pillars of Self
Esteem by Nathaniel Branden after hearing about it on a podcast.
I'm only through chapter one, but it makes sense. We need to know
we have the capability of thinking, making decisions, just like
anyone else. We are not stupid.
We need to believe we have worth, and that we are worth fighting
for. When we don't believe that we don't try, and then say, "See I
told you I couldn't do it" and spiral in the wrong direction. I'm
interested to hear more. I'm surprised he hasn't listed what the
six pillars are, but I'm still listening.
You can listen to an audio book for free by going to www.logicalloss.com/audible and starting your free
trial (cancel anytime) they have TONS of books, and I really like
the way they suggest books for you. I've found some great books at
audible

Launching Your Podcast on A Certain Date

12;43 you have no control over how long it takes your podcast to show up in iTunes. Typically its around 2-3 days, but if they are busy it make take more. It's best to submit your podcast and then launch when the show is in iTunes

Basically being on the front page of New and Noteworthy gets you about 200 downloads per day. According to the New Media Show there are over 1000 podcasts coming into iTunes per week. new and Noteworthy doesn't seem to pack the punch it use to.

This is a replay of the live broadcast with Dave Jackson, StargatePioneer, Better Podcasting, Jim Collison, Pirate Michael, Jeremy T. Dennis, and Bill Conrad (Wizard).

Jim was Podcasting on New year's Eve

2:30 Jim changed the format a bit the other night and got some feedback from his audience.

Zencastr.com Discussion

3:40 This was a super easy tool to use to create a double-ender in the cloud. Check it out at zendcastr.com Jeremy has used it for a month and has good experiences with it so far. It's easy to use and better than trying to get people to record their side of the conversation.

They do have one person who occasionally drops the call. There haven't been any drifting issues with different speeds of recording. Jeremy recorded five people at one time, and got a copy of each person's audio, plus a sixth version that had everyone combined.

It's free now, but it won't be free forever. It seems to be pretty obvious when you use it. Check out Jerem at www.transmissionpodcast.com
USB Mixers that output more than stereo

12:40 The mixers that allow these seem somewhat expensive. per the Chat Room the Behringer UFX1204 Xenyx 12-Channel Mixer will do it. (aff link).

Backing Up Zencaster Call

16:00 Use a portable recorder like a Zoom H5. Keep things clean, and keep it simple. Sometimes having multiple files can muddy the water.

Proper Levels When Recording a Blab into Zoom

18:35 For me everything goes into my mixer which goes into the recorder. So it doesn't matter where I'm sending the audio to, I've already got my recording before I send it to blab.

Glycast Controlling Your Feed

21:45 A company is saying, "Just give us your feed." Dave explains it could be very dangerous to give your feed to another company and let them be between you and your audience.

NOTE: Dave interviewed the guy behind Glycast on the School of Podcasting. Here is a video that explains the potential danger.

Jim mentions it might be interesting to have two feeds: One with ads and one without.

What is a Hobby Podcaster?

30:15 Stargate Pioneer from betterpodcasting.com does a show for the "Hobby Podcaster" but has a ton of equipment. So what is a hobby podcast?

34:10 Can You login to Blab from the same machine? Yes you can but you have to use a different browser or an incognito window.

Live365 Goodbye E-Mail
37:40 Jim reads a letter from Live365 explaining why they are closing their doors.

Dave mentions that according to the New Media Show over 1000 podcasts are launched a week, and Soundcloud has settled their law suit in the UK.

Which Pop Filter?

42:28 Dave has a pop filter and Jim has a foam cover. Which one is better? For Dave, I think the foam can cut out some high end, but in the end they both work.

The RE320 is around $300 for just the microphone. BSW has a good deal for the microphone, shock mount, and pop filter.

46:10 How do You cut out breathing noise? Quit breathing. In the end its mic technique.

48:05 Go listen to an old show with fresh ears.

50:30 Dave's messy Facebook setup. You want to friend the Dave Jackson with the headphones.

Milestone Episodes

51:35 Dave has episode 500 coming up and he's trying to top episode 400. There are a few things he might try.

Most people don't tune into hear yourself pat yourself on the back.

The Weirdos on Live Systems

[21:05] Jim talks about someone on Blab who decided to stick the camera down his pants. This is hard as there is no control for this, and you have to just move on, and try not to let it throw you. We talk about this a bit, but realize this is the exception (not the norm). You don’t have to really worry about it, but you do need to be prepared to just cut the person off, and move on.

Dave shares a story about someone having a heart attack while he was teaching one day.

[24:45] to Ban someone from your blab, you can click on the person’s name and click on the “!” to ban them. This does not delete all their old chat messages.

If you are talking Religion, Politics, or Abortion, get ready for your blab session to melt into a ball of hate and opinions.

If you are going to be doing a blab for your job or business, you need to realize this is a possibility (so just have your finger on the button)

PowerPress or Libsyn Feed?

48:50 Both can be broken. Right now, I'm running into more people having problems with Wordpress (it's not a PowerPress issue). The plugins can conflict. You can break a Libsyn feed as well (but I've seen that much, much less). Check out validatemyfeed.com to make sure your feed is OK

Today we are JLD and Blab Free (things we keep talking about each week - We love them both, but we are mixing in some new stuff).

Blab Purchases PodClear
Dave had some issues using Podclear in the past. We are assuming its the coding that was purchased. Podclear was saying they could have up to 9 people at the same time and you would get 9 separate files and one combined. This should be interesting. It is nice that this might put some pressure on Google Hangouts. At this point, podclear is shut down. We are all in "wait and see mode."

Podcast App Still Not Working...

7:10 We are really surprised that the new version of the Apple Podcasts App is still not working.... We all agree Overcast is a great alternative. The way it syncs across different phone/iPad.

When You Live at 100%

11:15 Life is tough when you live at your peak performance. There is no room for life to throw you any curve balls. When you are in this type of situation everything has to go right. Dave spoke at a local group on Thursday and it backed up his entire week.

Cut out things that do not move you toward your goals.
Keep everything organized so you don't spend time looking for stuff. Jim does a monthly check of all his systems.
It might be more expensive as you need things to work right the first time. Dave explains how he will not unplug his recorder any more. He will use his second recorder.
Resist the urge to set a second podcast.
Dave explains how he might be featured on the Local News for International Podcast Day.

Cutting Back On Your Shows

Hosting Suggestions?

32:09 Kim is having issues with Hostgator (which Dave loves their service, you can save 25% using the coupon podcastcoach a www.schoolofpodcasting.com/hosting )

Kim is releasing a podcast with a certain amount of episodes and then it will stop. Should I release them all at once?

Dave feel you should roll them out over time. There is no way that everyone will go back and listen to every episode and with that in mind - episode 1 gets ignored.

As Kim knows what will be in the next episode she can tease next week's show at the end of each episode. This is a tip from the Podcast Talent Coach show.

Intro and Outro Music

39:21 You can get professional intros created at Music Radio Creative. You want the music to fit the content and/or the host. You can find music at Audio Jungle and make your own. Don't use illegal music. Jim has contacted local musicians to have music crated.

What About a Daily Show?

42:39 The bottom line to any schedule is bringing value. You can publish at whatever schedule you want.

Getting Behind in Listening

45:10 Keep in mind not everyone can keep up with that show, they feel guilty, and the unsubscribe. As long as the show delivers value, I will listen if I'm weeks behind.

The Old Salesmen Trick

48:30 Which one works better for you? This can be helpful when trying to schedule an interview. You offer multiple days. This helps get "none" off the table. Dave uses Appointlet . Another free option is Calendly. Whatever you use time zones can be a frequent issue. I like to have a tool that automatically reminds my guests.

Launching on a Specific Day

52:30 People want to launch on International Podcast Day. Keep in mind you have no control over how long it takes to get listed in iTunes. It's best to get it into iTunes and the other directories, and then announce it on a certain day. Many musicians do this, they wait until the CD is in their hand to do a CD release program.

Today we keep on blabbing and enjoy answering questions such as

Why do we call podcasts, podcasts?

Blab Discussion

9:00 What do we think the impact blab will have on podcasting?

15:05 Starting A Second Show, What is the Best Media Host?

Libsyn provides one feed per account. You could use PowerPress to generate multiple feeds on one site, but when you use the one libsyn account for multiple shows your stats get “whonky.”

18:08 How Important is it to get into New and Noteworthy in iTunes?

26:15 Is Media Fire a Good Option?

It’s $50 a year. For most podcast its enough bandwidth. It’s slow, and the stats are the most absolute basic you can get. So for the person who wants to take one step above hosting their media on their website, mediafire would be a baby step. A better choice would be Libsyn, Blubrry, Spreaker, (use the coupon code sopfree)

You can create a folder and allow people to upload files.

Jim is back from graduation Saturday and Dave and Jim take your calls.

Gale Palitz Wants to Start a Podcast

Gale is super excited about starting a podcast and has some done some research, but needs some guidence on the pieces part of podcasting.

Host Gator is a Web host for your podcast Page (use the coupon code podcastcoach to save 25%)

Libsyn.com and Blubrry are MEDIA host to host your MP3 files. Use the coupon code sopfree

You need artwork for your iTunes listing that should be at least 1400 X 1400 pixles (jpg). I would also make one that is 300X 300 for INSIDE the mp3 file.

Don't use a website hosting company to host your media.

A podcast episode is simply a blog post with some audio attached to it (or video).

There are 27 steps to launch a podcast, but many of these are easy, and you only have to do them once.

How Are You Going to Pay?

There are two ways to learn how to podcast and both cost you.

  1. You can pay with your TIME and search Google and hope you don't find some outdated tutorial showing you how to use old technology in a way that will shoot you in the foot. It's free, but you pay in time, and in headaches.

  2. You can pay with MONEY and join the School of Podcasting. This will save you time, and headaches as we have step by step tutorials on every aspect of starting, launching, and growing your podcast.

Do you have more money or time? Do you want a podcast or headaches?

If you just want to just test podcasting, check out podcasting for free

I Want to Go Live

I don't recommend starting live. When you first start out you don't have an audience. You should get your show up and running, build an audience and then add live later.

Blog Talk Radio is easy, but currently their audio quality is not great. Their phone tool is awesome. This means you use them for their phone and then use an additional hosting company like Libsyn. A less expensive is to use callinstudio.com but that means you need some more technical skills. Blog talk radio will be releasing an update to their system soon that will have better audio quality, but they will control you RSS feed (which is kind of a deal breaker).

Gale just wants people to call in and argue with her.

Using Godaddy vs Libsyn

Godaddy is a web hosting company (and they sell domains and such). Libsyn is a media hosting. 1and will give me hosting for almost no money the first year (because they know once they get you, you won't leave). Saving 9 dollars a year is probably not worth it.

A Website host is for your WEBSITE. A MEDIA host is for your Audio.

Twit.tv Shuts Down their Live Chat and Streaming

Leo Laporte says his is shutting things down (he accidentally showed some explicit material on his screen). It is a shame that there are people who live to pick on him. Leo accidentally shared a picture of his winky.....

What makes Leo great, is also what may put Leo in his own way. Put a camera on you, and see if you don't make a mistake or two that can then go viral.

Website Hosting Issues

Dave has been with Hostgator.com forever (you can get 25% off using the coupon code " podcastcoach " ). He loves their support, but lately it seems like he is having more and more issues. He is thinking of moving the School of Podcasting to WPEngine.com before he does jim and Dave talk about some optional website hosting companies like Maplegrove Partners.

Clammr Dicusssion with Daniel J Lewis.

Daniel is enjoying sharing other content, consuming other content (without subscribing to the show), as well as sharing his own content. Daniel is from the Audacity to Podcast

What do you think of doing a show that would be super short like 20 seconds long. A short podcast makes you get to the point.

Is there a difference between a www.askthepodcastcoach.com and just askthepodcastcoach.com (looks like a caching issue - and it was).

The Simple Podcast Press plugin now allows you to jump to a certain point in your show.

Dave, Jim and Daniel talk about working with smaller companies.

Do something nice for someone else

Dave contributed to Kathy Kelly's book about Autism. Kathy successfully raised Nine thousand dollars towards to publishing of her book.

Small Company Discussion (Continued)

The Simple Podcast Press plugin now allows you to jump to a certain point in your show.

It will also make a list of your past show (coming in the future) and you can also change the color of the player.

Workign with smaller companies that can pivot and change quickly unlike a bigger company that has to go through a committee.

Podbean Update - Now Available with a Redirect

Dave is confused by their front page, and it turns out they do have a way to redirect your show podcast RSS feed. They do have support (I had to use them once when my downloads stopped working for no reason).

Podcasts.com kind of dodged the question to a yes/no question.

Podcasts.com came on the scene recently so I sent them:

  1. How do you make money (business plan).

A: Some of the podcasts have ads on their searchable directory index page on Podcasts.com page. Those ads pay for the costs.

  1. Do you change my mp3 file name?

  2. Do you change my mp3 ID# tags?

  3. Do you change the bit rate of my show (stereo/mono/bit rate)

A: 2 – 4 – Those are all part of our management portal.

These are yes no questions, and when you don’t answer them I assume the worst.

  1. Do you supply an RSS redirect in the event I don’t want to use your service.

A: We do not at this time.

  1. Is there a way to show my rss feed from my website (that I use to manage my show) instead of the RSS feed from podcasts.com

A: You could create a redirect URL on your site which you can give out and have it just redirect to ours.

Notice the tech support person is trying to get me to redirect my traffic to their website. (Or its a person who doesn’t understand podcasting, or they don’t want to display anything from your website).

In speaking with Daniel J Lewis of the Audacity to Podcast, he had stated that he had some email exchanges and they seemed open to putting a link back to your website.

Take it for what it’s worth. I see it as a platform for secondary distribution.

Podclear and Soundcloud are now out of Beta

Podclear is a way to record skype calls, and Soundcloud has been rumored to be losing money and looking for schedule D funding.

The worst case scenario in the past was Podango which was a media hosting company that gave their customers a week to leave.

Mixlr free year for Jim ran out.

Their interface is a bit confusing at time.

Michael Ray Has Questions About Owning Your RSS Feed

Dave uses Libsyn's feed for his show. When his website had an issue, his show came out as it always does because Libsyn was fine (and his audience is subscribed to his RSS feed on Libsyn). The Ask the Podcast Coach using PowerPress (and the built in RSS Feed). You need to control your feed. Here is a video help explain why.

Dave recommend Backup Creator to backup your website/wordpress.

ADHD Think Tank Menu Questions

Menus are used the create the navigation for your site. You should have at a minimum a Contact Page, and the About Page. From there its up to you. You can use the cryptx plugin to cut down on people spamming your podcast.

You can look at other websites to use as ideas on how you can create your menus.

Next Week Will Be the First Ever Dave-less Show

Dave will be out next week, but Jim is going to get the keys and Drive.

Recording On the Road

Kathy wants to know record on the road.

You can use the Voice Memo app and upload it to Dropbox.

There are other tools like Bossjock Studio, and Rode LE on your phone.

[2:45]What did you learn from New Media Expo?

People need to make sure what they say their podcast is about – is accurate. We come up with a great title, but it has nothing to do with the episode.

Dave is ready to see people blow up the podcast bluebprint, and do something original.

Podcasting For Free forced Dave to get out of his comfort zone.

Make the beginning of your show great to get people sucked in.

Its going to be interesting to see if people start growing their audience through podcast spots.

Jim explains how we should know how people consume your content. This means knowing phones, tablets, etc.

Fire tablets are really cheap.

Fire HD 7, 7″ HD Display, Wi-Fi, 8 GB – Includes Special Offers, Black

[20:00] RSS Feeds are Not For Humans

Think of your RSS feed as the paper in a player piano. Its gibberish until you put it into the piano. Likewise your RSS feed is just noise until you put it into software (like iTunes) to decode it.

Cast Feed Validator is a great service to use to see if your RSS feed is valid

23:35 Podcasts.com Free Hosting

Podcasts.com a Good Idea?

[23:35]This is to a good choice for a primary solution, but as a secondary point of distribution it may be valuable.

[25:30] How Should Politicians Use Podcasting?

Dave feels politicians can use “behind the scenes” and explain why they are the better candidate (instead of ripping on the other candidate).

[35:22] What Directories Should I Be Listed In?

I recommend iTunes, Stitcher, and Tunein. From there go to www.podcast411.com and use the directory of directories.

When you go to list yourself in directories have your artwork URL, your description and everything you will be asked in a document and copy and paste to speed up this process.

iTunes watches your RSS feed, and your RSS feed is updated by your posts.

[49:00] Why Do People Love SoundCloud?

[49:00]Different companies have embraced SoundCloud and they appear successful because of associations. They are technically not as cool as they were years ago, and they still need to make money.

Jim uses different services for different strategies. Some players look better in different places. If you have multiple websites you visit, organize the websites into a folder (as bookmarks) then you can right click on the folder and open all the websites in the folder with different tabs.

[58:45] Subscribe on Android

[58:45] This is a great initiative from the folks at Blubrry to help make subscribing on an Android platform easier. The idea is you can make a button and if the person has the right app it wil subscribe. If they don’t have the app, they will be prompted to download one of the approved apps. Check it out at on www.subscribeonandroid.com

Happy PIE DAY. Today Dave and Jim answer your podcasting questions on the following topics today:

4:20 Dual XLR into 1/8" Cable Review

John Morgan from Lets Talk Metal Detecting and Treasure huntingdual_cable

John has a cable that allows you to put two Microphones into the portable recorder.

When you record your voice you want to get as close to zero without going over. If you leave a lot of room between the recording level and zero it will be filled in with hiss.

So you want to set your recording level to almost go to zero and back it off to (around) -6 to -12.

Different microphones pick up the background noise more than dynamic microphones.

25:11 Thoughts on Spreaker

spreaker-logo-272x125Spreaker is a great platform as they do not mess with your file.

They do create an itunes compliant feed

They have decent stats

They have a redirect in place (so if you want to leave and go some place else you can)

You can also get on iHeartRadio through Spreaker.

If I had any kind of gripe, there is a limit to the amount of space you can upload (granted it allows you to have around five years of space, and many people don't stay with a podcast five years).

Their business model is different than someone like Libsyn and Blubrry (as you can broadcast live at Spreaker and you can't from Libsyn.com and Blubrry).

There is a free program if you want to check it out at Spreaker.com

53:00 Quit Apologizing

Quit talking about how busy you are, and quit apologizing for missing a show.

Dave has been using zoom.us for School of Podcasting "Office Hours"

56:00 What is Compression

It makes the loud stuff softer, and the soft stuff louder.

Check out Auphonic.com for a free online compressor and audio cleanup tool

Reaching Your Audience

You need to go to where they are, make friends with them, and THEN tell them about your podcast (not go there, tell them about your podcast, and then make friends). Dave has business cards to promote the show (not him) and he hands them out and occasionally leaves them in places where his target audience is. Make sure your family and friends have them as well. They cost like .05 a piece. You need to hustle. It may be a better strategy to really focus on the audience and get them excited about your show and let them tell people about your show.

My Audio Needs Help [13:00]

My sound is not good, what can I do? The hiss is gone where we talk. Any ideas?

The caller is using condensor microphones (which pick up background noise more than dynamic microphones). Dave recommend the Audio Technica 2100 microphone (aff link).

You want your sound to be close to going over "0" without going over. Turn off the automatic settings in Skype. You can use the Echo user on Skype (its an automated robot person that is good to use as a test). Always make sure the person is wearing headphones.

Use Auphonic.com to clean out bad recordings (bad recordings can be improved, but don't expect miracles).

Practice, Practice, Practice.

You can check out Dave's podcast equipment store. (affiliate link)

Facebook Business Pages 35:33

How do you setup a business page on Facebook? Dave is not a facebook guru (I use it to keep up with family).

Can I mix mono and stereo in the same episode?[40:12]

Quick answer: no.

If the music is not licensed, do not use it. You need the songwriter, the performer, and the person/company that owns the rights to it to rights. If you don't have all three of those sign off on the music you are using the music illegally. Do people use music illegally? Yes. Does it make it legal? No. Use at your own risk.

Podcast Hosting Discussion[37:00]

Jim does enterprise podcasting and explains how he is moving to Mixlr from Spreaker and why. Jim enjoys the fact that you can setup one code from Mixlr and you don't have to update your website.

Alternatives to Libsyn and Blubrry [43:00]

Media Fire is a low cost, extremely basic stats, with a limit on bandwidth, this is an option.

Amazon S3 discussion [45:00]

When you use options like Media Fire, Amazon S3, and Azzure from Microsoft (around 23 /month). These are more technical, and you can end up with a more expensive hosting bill than if you use Libsyn.com or Blubrry (get a free month using the code sopfree ).
Audiometric.io still no ads.

When Do You Need a Mixer [19:10]

When you need to mix in live sounds

When you have more than one person in the same room

You don’t NEED a mixer for skype

You can add bass and treble in the software

They are not NEEDED in some cases, but they are very handy.

A mixer give you more options.

Today Dave talks about his insight from Podcast Movement and we are joined by Matt from www.mindingthegap.net who just published his first podcast (CONGRATS!). Dave met Matt at podcast movement and Matt said he was going to be in Cleveland and Dave said to look him up – and he did.

Insights from Advertising Session[2:00]
It doesn’t matter what you are talking about as long as you have 10,000 downloads (they may think about you if you have 5,000 per episode).
10 to $15 per one thousand downloads (better known as CPM)
They are looking for female related podcasts to run advertisements
Make sure you are checking the email that you have setup to receive email inquiries. Todd Cochran from Blubrry.com is saying “We have potential sponsors” and Todd is not getting any response. Meanwhile people are always asking about how to get a sponsor (Hello????).
Dave have a CPM of over $50 when he was promoting his Fitbit on his Logical Weight Loss Podcast

More Reflections [10:00 ish].
You don’t run a race looking sideways. – Chris Brogan
Quit copying each other
What didn’t work in some sessions.
Matt reflects on the conference (20:00)

Garbled Skype Sounds[24:50]
Try to get a good solid recording level. Also turn off all things that use bandwidth so you computer can focus on skype and only skype. The calls us using the Zoom H5.
Troubleshooting your podcast begins with separating the different items involved in creating your sound and see if you can isolate them.
Thanks to barb from www.Sageclinician.com

Control Your Mental State [35:00]
When Dave first started his session he knew everyone in the room. At first this bummed him out. He explains how there were two ways to think about your presentation when the room was not completely full.
Being positive is a choice. It takes effort, and it may not be easy. Always deliver your best as you never know who is listening or watching
Dave may be more accessible than other podcasters
Dave talks about jumping up and down on the stage during his presentation.

Dave Starts ClevelandPodcasters.com [42:00]
Dave is using meetup.com to try to get together a group of Cleveland Podcasters if you are in the Northeast Ohio Podcaster come over and sign up.
During the show an Atlanta group decided to create a group.

Minding The Gap Podcast [45:30]
Matt’s show will be a podcast documenting going from where you are to where you want to be. You can find him at www.mindingthegap.net
Matt talks about how he is traveling for his job now and its throwing a wrench into his production.
Now that Jim has a personal connection, Jim is more likely to listen to Matt’s podcast.
Focus on CONTENT first. Then worry about the graphics, etc.
Dave went over 1 million downloads this week.

Today we talk about some strange audio issues. The good news is the show must go on (the sound isn't that bad on the recording).

What Do you Do With Old Shows?

I use a service called backblaze.com to backup my files. You can get 15 Gigs from onedrive.com (free).

Media Fire

Seagate Expansion 2TB Desktop External Hard Drive USB 3.0 (STBV2000100)

Amazon Glacier

Amazon Links? [10:18]

You can make easy to remember links with the plugin called Pretty Link (there is a free and paid version). Dave gets nervous making a yourwebsites.com/amazon

Definitely do not make amazon.yourwebsite.com

Be sure to read their terms of use and service paperwork. There are some gray areas.

There is a gray area if you send people to amazon without them knowing its an amazon links

Thanks to Rem from the sci-fimoviepodcast.com

Audio from Computer in the podcast [22:30]

I hate when the sound of someone computer keeps popping up.

Beining Sounds Live in the Podcast [26:43]

I use Soundbyte software on my iPad.

I also use Bossjock Studio (I have figured out how to pause now). It's much easier to add files to bossjock via dropbox.

Releasing All Episodes At Once [29:13]

At first it looks like the older files don't get much traction. Over time this evens out. Also if you don't listen to all the episodes, Apple's podcasts app might unsubscribe you from the podcast

Apple Bought Swell [32:25]

Daniel from the Audacity to Podcast wanted to know what we thought about Apple Buying the Swell App.

Liveaudiocast.co [52:45]
Potential spreaker competitor (all in one system). Dave will be investigating. Check them out at liveaudiocast.co

Today on episode 24 we started this out as a Google hangout on Air (a live video). Today we answer questions about getting listed in mobile apps and other directories. We also talk about Google plus shutting down (its not)

Get Your Studio Setup and Leave it - 2:250
The more your add to your show, the harder and more stressful it can become.
Be sure to do a pre-call with any guests

Shutting Down Your Podcast - 6:04
in the a Google Group and it was regaining Charles river's
and that he now time shutting down his podcast he said and six figures in debt
and I need to focus my energy on projects that are producing income

Setting limits to your podcasting - 8:15
Be careful of doing "just one more thing."
Try to mentally be home when you're home.
I worked with my wife to come up with a schedule that we both could live with.
I use asan.com to make a list of projects and when I am at my office I am uber focused.
Be sure to check with your family to make sure you're not neglecting them.
Podcasting does not need to be an all encompassing activity.
STOP CHECKING YOUR STATS.

Why Didn't You Start a Network?-15:27
It sounded like more work, and I could never come up with name that would fit all of my shows. I had other projects that seem to be a higher priority.

Dave and Jim are trying new technology so please excuse our mix of this show.

What Do I Do with These Recordings? - 21:57
Be sure to pace yourself and keep working on new material as you slowly roll out the episodes

Mobile Podcast Directories - Can I Verify If I'm Listed?
Well, you can download the app and check yourself. Many of these directories have no web based version of their directory. In some cases, you might contact friends who are on other platforms (Andrord, windows, iOs) and have them check.

Adding People To Hangouts 38:00
You have to send the link to the URL of the hangout window (top of the screen) not the links at the bottom of the hangout. You have to have a G+ to be in a hangout.

Google Plus Shutting Down 42:00?
One person left the team does not mean it is shutting down.

Today Jim and Dave celebrate their first five star review in iTunes. We answer the question, “Is podcasting worth it?” (it meaning the work it takes to create one). This is why everyone who is podcasting says to pick a topic you are passionate about as it will take some time to build that audience, and the easier it is to talk about your topic, the easier it is to create episodes.

Key Point: If you’re not sure what to podcast about – you’re not ready to podcast. Don’t waste your money on equipment. It’s time to sharpen your axe before trying to cut down the tree.
Should Ask The Podcast Coach have It’s Own Website?

Typically shows that have completely different topics are on different websites. That’s why the Logical Weight Loss, Weekly Web Tools, and Marketing Musician podcast on their ow sites. With this in mind Ask the Podcast Coach could live on the School of Podcasting, but I want to be able to point people to an exact post and it sounds weird if I direct them to the School of Podcasting website.
How Do You Define Worth?

You need to ask what do you want from your podcast? What will make it a “success”?

There are many ways to benefit from your podcast that make it worth it. For Dave the fact that he helped someone lose 100 lbs makes it worth doing the Logical Weight Loss podcast.
Other Questions Answered:

How do you count subscribers? You can count downloads, you can get information from Google Analytics, but the only listener stats are in Stitcher.

Is there a bad side of sending out direct links to the audio or video using social media?

Mike Phillips (who knows audio like nobody else) opinion on lavalier microphones and the blue yeti microphone. In general if a piece of technology is working for you then by all means keep using it. Find mic at www.computers2know.com and mixlr.com/rickshouse

We also talk some podcast promotion, and releasing your podcast over time.

Today we hear a great podcast success story of Nikola Danaylov's podcast called Singularity 1 on 1 (http://singularity1on1.com/) , and how he used it to interview experts who later would write recommendation letters that would lead to "Nick" getting into a very prestigious school. Here are some key take aways:

  1. He has been podcasting for three years

  2. When we first tried to get guests he had a 10% success rate

  3. He TRULY believes in his topic, and has a passion and purpose.

  4. Eventually it started to get easier to get guests

  5. Guests like to talk about themselves, and Nick's topic. Show them how they will benefit when you ask them to be on your show.

  6. Provide a great show that people want to be on (get good graphics, intros, outros).

In the end Nick was able to get the experts he interviewed to write him referral letters that got him into a very prestigious school (there were 2100 applicants for 80 spots) where he got to live on Campus with phenomenal scientists and other great people. He also earned a scholarship. It gets better. When he announced he had been accepted, one of his followers on twitter purchased his plane ticket for him.
