JDR and I have been friends for quite some time now. Going back 10 years, we'd been in contact, Coast To Coast but didn't officially meet until 2011 at a gig in Buffalo, New York. He turned it out and we've been friends ever since.
I kinda knew he'd be perfect for a Carefree Drive. When I dropped the idea on him it was a no-brainer. Aside from being a fine musician, Joel is a class act. He just has that vibe about him, laid back, smooth.... a gentleman. If you listen close....you'll know.

While i was looking through my catalog for songs and song titles relevant to Martin Luther King Jr., I thought about the deep south where many of his battles were fought. Of course, three key cities involved in the civil rights movement were Selma, Montgomery and Birmingham. Along with marches and non-violent protests, Martin Luther King Jr. delivered some of his most memorable speeches in these locations. When I saw Eric's title 'Somewhere In Alabama', I was curious so I listened and instantly knew this was the song that I was searching for. Soulful, emotional and raw. Having familiarized myself with many of Martin's speeches, all that was left was to find a message that was moving, powerful and fitting. Eric's guitar work and lead in laid the foundation for Martin's delivery and as the song transitions, I carefully positioned Martin's prophetic speech. After listening to the final mix several times, I was left with an overwhelming feeling of awe of what's been accomplished and how far we still have to go. Eric after hearing the finsihed product was moved as well. Special thanks to Eric Essix, a Birmingham Alabam native who allowed me use of his tune.

When I close my eyes, whether the purpose is to settle down and relax, nap for a few or call it quits for the night and fall asleep, I like having those slow, melodic tunes by my side with the volume just right. Lullabies and ballads. It just 'does something' to you. My inquisitive nature about what that some thing is led me to do some research.
We've heard it said that music has charms to sooth a savage breast. An article I found helps make sense of that adage. The National Sleep Foundation (www.sleepfoundation.org) posted the article, "Can Music Help You Calm Down and Sleep Better?" The answer is a definite yes and they go on to explain why. Music has a positive effect, an almost enchanting effect on us biologically and that is quite relevant to this mix and its purpose. So......with that info in mind, let's dive in. This will be added to the morning routine at some point. Yeah, a hot shower feels good and gets things moving. Add a cup of coffee to boost things a little more, need that kick to get everything moving in the right direction. But when I turn up the funk, the morning is on a whole nutha level.
The Mixing Lab was crazy, buzzing with mad energy when I put this podcast together. Wicked bass lines, killer horns and sax, and that funky organ the Hammond B3 dropping some soul. There's some familiar cuts in there, remixed and remodeled but I won't spoil it. I'm sure you'll recognize them immediately. This mix is definitely outside of the box but like I said, there's a lot more room out there to play.

I've been feeling this uptempo kinda vibe lately. Maybe because the days of summer are counting down and I'm holding on to that sunshine. Midwest Ohio is certainly beautiful in the fall with all its combinations of red, orange and yellow foliage but I like feeling the summer breeze. I have to admit though that mornings are nice right now, the air is crisp and fresh, and the night aren't too bad either. Easy to fall asleep and wakes you right up in the morn. The seasons are cycling through and I have put together some pretty cool music to keep us company.
GRP....if you don't know, you're about to find out. Dave Grusin and Larry Rosen came together to create a powerhouse, an unbelievable collection of super-talented jazz musicians back in the late 70's and early 80's. Ron Holloway, of Smooth Groove Radio...The Vibe, and I were chatting about music history like we always do and once we hit the GRP subject, we dwelled there for a while. That makes sense since their catalogue was so extensive, thus the inspiration for this show. Although this is a smidgeon of the catalog and represent only a handful of artists I think you'll like and probably remember the songs heard on this show. I didn't even get to Chick Corea, Al Jarreau and all the later additions to the label's lineup courtesy of Tommy Lipuma in the late 90's.
That's what I love about music so much. So much wealth in history, stored in my music vault.

I'm back with some more, this podcast on the heels of some 'me' time. Yep...summer brings on sunshine and vacation. Thankfully I had jus enough of both. I had a pretty nice getaway, hitting the road for about 5 hours or so. And you know I was listening to?? That's right...The Carefree Drives were loaded up back to back. Helped make that drive seem a lot shorter, smoother and enjoyable. I couldn't wait to get back home and produce another segment...so here it is.

It has been quite rainy this season...most of the spring and now leading into summer, which is officially here. I'm not one who is influenced that greatly by strong winds, dark clouds, torrential downpour and flooding but Mother Nature has a way of getting attention. She definitely caught mine.
Not to be deterred, I turn to the tunes. There's all kinds of new stuff out there, some of which you'll hear on this show. Personally, I just try to make an interesting blend, like a 5 star chef. Cooked to perfection. Let me know if the meal was served 'just right'.

Beauty in the dark.....it piques the curiousity, the need to know.
There's much to say about the silhouette of a woman, the shadows of mystery. Lurking in the dark, she's poised somewhere between the shadows and the light. For some it's a mystique that's attractive and sexy, For others, possibly even dangerous. Perhaps there's some magical magnetism that, one way or another, draws us closer.
Her name is....whatever she wants it to be.

There's truth in the saying that "Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery". But then again, imitation doesn't necessarily mean duplication, does it?

Always putting my jazzy twist on things....and of course, 'IN THE MIX', Funnin' is a one of the 30 minute jazz mixes I put together for a short stint on a radio network several years back. It was challenging and exciting to do something different and spice up the show at that time. It was my 30 minutes to show off my skills. The shows producer loved the mixes and kept me on. Unfortunately that whole thing came to an abrupt end. It ended up being a stepping stone for bigger and better things. No regrets...its all about the music
It's easy for me to admit I fell in love with this woman at some point a long time ago.
Like so many others, I still have much love for her even now.
Phyllis captured me with that beautiful voice and captivating beauty. My "Sophisticated Lady". The One who has the amazing ability to make me remember, recall, reminisce, reflect and forget, leaving behind those sad days and difficult times. Rather instead I found solace in and coolin' with Phyllis and those collabs with Pharoah Monk, McCoy Tyner, Norman Connors and Michael Henderson.
This tribute recalls the amazing class and beauty of Phyllis Hyman, a star whose light faded too early and tragically. Depression and cocaine were her demons and her suicide left us devastated, asking, ourselves How and Why?
This mix takes me back to the eve of our meeting at the legendary Blue Note in NYC. I sat at her feet next to the stage and gazed up at this statuesque beauty, even taller with her signature headpiece. Post performance I was blessed to present her with a dozen roses. Definitely one of my life's most memorable moments. Many years later I can feel that night and recall my nervous sweaty palms. I smiling because she left me with something....a few special precious moments in time.
My preference here is to play her ballads, some of which may be more unfamiliar and obscure so for some you may be hearing new grooves. That's alright. Believe me, it's all good!

Today, I just had to bring this mix back....it's full of bass and some funk.
One of the great bassists, Victor Bailey passed on today at the young age of 56 and I can see him, feel him and HEAR him still thumpin his bass, the latest addition to the heavenly orchestra.
Victor fought the good fight, doing his best to stay in this realm with us but God and life had the last say. His body was afflicted with a disease that slowly caused him to lose control of his muscles, a condition called Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease. He'd been battling this for over 25 years.
This is funky which is how I'm going to remember Vic.. You'll be missed REST IN PEACE VICTOR BAILEY
As I move through my early 50's, I recognize more and more samples of music from back in the day. This helps to keep the music from my era alive and well and is a constant reminder that that music was made to stand the test of time. Its refreshing to see the new school/old school connection.
I just love the sound of R&B and neo-soul. Cats like Raphael Saadiq, Babyface and Rahsaan Patterson making sure I get fed regularly. Of course when you put together a set that has some old and new, it's the sound that ties it all together. This set is a musical bridge and weaves just that type of pattern. If you like that type of music then you'll enjoy.
I'm not going to spoil it by listing the artists/songs. If you know your music, you're right in there. There's always a surprise or two when you turn me loose and of course, the mixes have to flow like butter.

President Barack Obama is part of the dream fulfilled. After having served two terms, many of us are sad to see him go. Undeniably, we're privileged. We've lived and been a part of history, part of THE DREAM. Certainly, to say the least, Martin would have been proud and I'm sure, from his heavenly home, his light brightly shines.
SPECIAL NOTES:
While I was looking through my catalog for songs and song titles relevant to Martin Luther King Jr., I thought about the deep south where many of his battles were fought. Of course, three key cities involved in the civil rights movement were Selma, Montgomery and Birmingham. Along with marches and non-violent protests, Martin Luther King Jr. delivered some of his most memorable speeches in these locations. When I saw Eric's title 'Somewhere In Alabama', I was curious so I listened and instantly knew this was the song that I was searching for. Soulful, emotional and raw.
Having familiarized myself with many of Martin's speeches, all that was left was to find a message that was moving, powerful and fitting. Eric's guitar work and lead in laid the foundation for Martin's delivery and as the song transitions, I carefully positioned Martin's prophetic speech.
After listening to the final mix several times, I was left with an overwhelming feeling of awe of what's been accomplished and how far we still have to go. Eric after hearing the finished product was moved as well.

The rain.... It was one of those days....again
Cloudy and wet, certainly a mood changer from the previous summer day, one of clear skies and sunshine. Rain can be a mood changer and as the light rains fell upon us all day, rather than darken my mood, it provided the perfect ambience for this mix. It was a summer storm that brought with it subtle claps of thunder and just enough flashes of lightning to separate the grey clouds from the red evening sky.
This all got me to thinking about nostalgia...old times, old friends and old school music. Reminiscing about life and the good ol' days. These are just the kind of days that lend itself to that.
This music set incorporates the finest artists in jazz with some pretty cool interpretation of the classic tunes. You'll recognize them I'm sure.

It's hard to reinvent Christmas every year since the very nature of the holiday is tradition (if it ain't broke, don't fix it). Sure, the songs are classic and timeless, we've been listening to them since our childhood and they have sentimental value.
My nature requires that I spend a fair amount of time outside the box, thus this mix. Taking the familiar and combining it with some unfamiliar keeps things interesting, and then slammin' it all together 'in the mix' takes it up a notch. Kinda like seeing the wrapped beautifully wrapped gift....anticipation building of what's inside.

I recently found this mix in my catalog. This is something I put together quite a few years ago for a show honoring the top 10 most influential African Americans of the 20th century. I didn't get to meet Maya Angelou at that event in NYC but I heard she liked the mix. Poet, teacher and activist, Maya Angelou's voice is powerful and precise, full of years of education and wisdom. As simple as this project seemed to be it was somewhat overwhelming and quite intimidating but I think the music compliments the poet and her poetry perfectly.

The first 45 rpm I ever purchased was Otis Redding's "Sitting On The Dock Of The Bay" back in '69 and to this day, I'm still adding to my oldies collection. I miss those album covers, the warm sound of vinyl and all those groups that started with 'The'. Seems like just about all of them did! (there's a few notables in the playlist). GROUPS....does anybody sing together like that anymore??

I want to make this clear, this is TWO completely separate songs. No, really it is! Some of you are saying my mixes are too seamless and you can't tell its a mix/mashup (that's the whole point...lol!!)
Here's The breakdown: All the flute parts you hear throughout the mix are from Althea Rene's tune "FM 1960", off of her brand new smokin' hot CD 'In The Flow'. Althea's flute fits in perfectly with the slammin' bassline and the fierce groove of Sister Sledges 'Thinking Of You' (Dimitri Of Paris Remix). This is a straight up ol skool party jam, almost has a house feel to it.
Initially you'll hear me blend Althea in to compliment Sister Sledges vocals, listen closely as Althea totally rips it up on flute. Big shout to Dimitri from Paris for reworking the Sister Sledge tune. Jazz folks, Althea Rene's "in The Flow" CD is a must have!
Now, this takes me back to my roots. THIS is how I used to throw down back in NYC! It wasn't always smooth jazz....lol!

April 20th 1951 Luther Vandross came into the world. This man found his purpose and aren't we thankful and grateful he did! LUTHER WAS BORN TO SING! I, like many, was saddened by his death. I grew up with Luther. From the first time I heard his voice (on Changes' A Lover's Holiday, The Glow Of Love and Searching) I was hooked. But when he dropped the ballads?? I was hooked for life. I always liked the positivity in this song. You can find several messages contained, messages of hope, encouragement and the dream of what lies ahead, so I felt it important to make the lyrics available.
ABOUT THE MIX: I mixed several versions of this tune together. Starting with the original which contained a sax solo part, I replaced that with the guitar wizardry of Norman Brown and Gerald Albright on sax (they collaborated on the song 'Tomorrow' from the CD 24/7) and polished off this mashup with Nelson Rangell (who is absolutely phenomenal on every wind instrument he plays). I think that's a piccolo that he playing to finish out the mix. Definitely a feel good vibe on this one!!
