What are some assumptions you have about your life and the world around you? Have you ever stopped to think about whether or not those assumptions are true? It could be a personal or a professional belief, but either way, have you taken the time to really examine why you believe it? I’d love to invite you to do so and begin challenging long-held assumptions.

In this episode of Uncommon Couch, I’m asking you 5 questions that I want you to ask yourself about the assumptions you hold in your life. Sometimes what we think is true really isn’t true once we stop to investigate it and do our due diligence. I want you to really dig deep and question, among other things, what you believe, why you believe it, and who benefits from you believing it? I really think you’ll be surprised by some of the conclusions you come to.

What you’ll find in this episode:

[02:29] What did you learn in your professional training that you now know is bullsh*t?

[08:02] Who benefits from your assumptions?

Going out on your own with a business comes with a lot of trial and error. It can be easy to second guess your decision or know when to even take a leap. And if you don’t have role models to help you see that it’s possible, that makes it all the more difficult.

In today’s episode, I’m chatting with Dr. Caryn Seebach, a health psychologist with a specialization in holistic management of chronic disease. She transitioned from working in male-dominated clinics to carving her own path in the online health space. She shares about the burnout that led to creating her own path, why it’s hard to pivot away from a career you’ve invested a lot of time into, and the importance of listening to her gut and opening herself up to a new path.

Simply making the decision to make a change can cause a shift. Doors open. The universe responds. There is beauty in finding your own path. You can break the mold of what your career space looks like, little by little. You can become a role model for honoring yourself in your work.

What you’ll find in this episode:

  • Caryn’s journey from traditional work to creating her own path
  • The burnout that led Caryn to realize it was time for a change
  • How Caryn turned her expertise into her own business
  • Why it can be hard to take a leap away from a career that isn’t right for you
  • The ripple effect of doing work that is aligned for you
  • Setting boundaries and thinking outside the box when it comes to finding work you enjoy
  • The importance of understanding that there isn’t one way to start a new career path
  • Choosing self-compassion and embracing discomfort throughout the process
  • How freeing it is to use her expertise in a way that aligns with what she wants out of life
  • How Caryn has been able to find balance and flexibility on her career path
  • How your journey does not have to look like those before you

Imposter syndrome is something that affects all business owners (even me!). It’s so easy to fall into the comparison trap of being “less than” someone else who provides a similar service that you do. But what if we could retrain our brains to recognize what makes us unique and the strengths that we bring to the table?

In this episode of Uncommon Couch, I share a personal experience with imposter syndrome that happened to me recently, why you should pay attention to your automatic thoughts of self-doubt, and the questions you should ask yourself to shift your perspective away from doubt and into celebrating your success (and the success of others). You’re not the only person who offers your service, but you’re the only person who can offer it the exact, special way that you do. Remember that!

What you’ll find in this episode:

[03:47] Why noticing your first, automatic thoughts of self-doubt are so powerful, and how those thoughts impact your business

A business goes through many iterations over the course of its life. As you grow, your business grows. As you change, your business changes. [28:54] The energy that can come from taking worthwhile, calculated risks, and how not playing it safe can help you find alignment in your business

[32:18] Not falling into the trap that work has to be hard or laborious or that you can’t do work that you love and that feels effortless

When it comes to branding, people often think their brand should appeal to their ideal clients. And while that is true, the way in which we approach branding should actually be about our own unique style and personality—that is, after all, what we want potential clients to connect with.

In today’s episode, I’m chatting with Gema Lynn Almilli, the Rebrand Stylist, who helps entrepreneurs bring energy back into their businesses with soul-aligned branding. She’s sharing how she found her niche as a rebrand designer, the importance of listening to whispers when it comes to aligned work, how visual branding makes you stand out, and the signs that you need a rebrand.

[11:41] How trauma from childhood affected her confidence, why she listened to the nudges that told her to take a risk and step outside her comfort zone, and how the process of live design energizes her

[15:56] Why visual branding is important for businesses, why designing for your personality (as opposed to your ideal client) brings a more unique style to your brand, and how comparison to others is less and less because you are stepping into owning your uniqueness

[23:41] How rebranding encompasses a lot of different aspects, how to know that it’s time for a rebrand of your own, and how your brand is an evolution of who you are and how you change over time

Listen to your gut. Sleep on it. Trust your intuition. Talk to a friend. We’ve all heard these and more ways to go about making decisions, both big and small. But what if each of us has a specific approach that we are meant to take when it comes to decision making?

In today’s episode, I’m sharing a high-level overview of the seven authorities in human design, which inform how we make decisions. Everyone has a different authority, which means that listening to your gut works great for one person (or authority), and sleeping on it works great for another.

Learning about your authority and making use of it in your own life is important to being fully aligned in your decisions.

What you’ll find in this episode:

[01:50] Understanding the human design authorities, and how they drive how we are meant to make decisions (it’s different for everyone)

[04:36] A high level look at the seven human design authorities and how they manifest as different decision-making processes

[20:36] An invitation to come back and listen to the podcast when I interview different people with each of these authorities, and the importance of cultivating a relationship with your own decision-making authority

[11:41] How energy and underlying motivations can affect flow within your business and the importance of introspection and quiet moments to know what you truly desire and what motivates you

[15:46] What sparked Josephine’s need to reimagine her business, and how she’s approaching what pieces to keep and what to let go of (what is serving her, and what isn’t)

[28:54] The energy that can come from taking worthwhile, calculated risks, and how not playing it safe can help you find alignment in your business

Today’s guest transitioned from corporate executive assistant to virtual assistant to owning her own virtual assistant agency in the span of two years. But it wasn’t easy. And it didn’t happen overnight.

Have you ever seen those social media ads for entrepreneurs in the online space who talk about making $10,000/month working only 10 hours a week … and how you can do it, too? It isn’t entirely untrue, but the reality is that it takes work to build your own business and get it to the level of success where you only have to work a few hours a week.

In this episode, Sadie Prestridge shares her journey to a six-figure VA business—from putting in the work (even when it’s not fun) to embracing support and growing a team, and the importance of accountability. She also talks about the responsibilities of a VA, how to know when you’re ready to hire one, and how a VA can support solo entrepreneurs.

What you’ll find in this episode:

[01:42] How Sadie landed in the world of virtual assistants and quickly grew to offering higher level executive support

Have you ever felt stuck in a business that might be financially successful but is still mentally and emotionally exhausting? This can happen when you build a business that’s not aligned with your energy and inner magic.

Holly Maree understands this all too well. She worked successfully in multiple industries, from nursing to cafe ownership, with each industry becoming more painful than the last, before she finally figured out how she operated differently as a human design Manifestor. This realization allowed her to redesign her life and business in a way that was aligned with how her energy works.

In this episode, she tells the story of how she eventually found her calling by following her intuition as a Manifestor, how Manifestors need different advice and encouragement than other types (and how that’s often lacking in the Human Design community) and why she focuses specifically on teaching Manifestors to build trust in themselves and explore their own magical gifts.

What you’ll find in this episode:

[01:59] Holly’s story of discovering her own Manifestor passions and why she’s so enthusiastic about helping other Manifestors do the same

[15:33] Why owning a business as a Manifestor looks so different than it does for other Human Design types and why it’s okay to run a business your own way

[24:26] How coming from a physiological background allows Holly to connect other Manifestors with their own bodies

[28:58] Why your business is a mirror and how treating it as an entity unique to you allows you to find your most aligned space

[34:26] How Manifestors often thrive by using different business strategies than other Human Design types and how they need to protect their energy in business

[38:04] How Holly’s business continues to evolve as she leans into her Manifestor strengths

One of the most maddening, frustrating, and rewarding parts of building a business is the desire to create the perfect offer. There are about a million ways to package your genius. Whether it’s a VIP day, a membership, a group program, or a one-on-one offer, it can be hard to decide which option will serve your clients best.

In this episode of The Uncommon Couch, I’m sharing the six things to consider when creating and selling your genius. We have to let go of the idea that there is a perfect way to do this because that will really drive you crazy trying to figure it out. It’s almost impossible to create the perfect offer and have it sell on the first try. Instead, we need to think about this experience as iterative and experimental.

I know how frustrating it is to put your time and energy into creating an offer that doesn't sell. Everyone has been there. The only difference between those that are successful and those that aren’t is if you kept going or not. If you’re committed to the idea of creating a unique offer, you have to keep trying.

What you’ll find in this episode:

  • The basics of what an offer is
  • Packaging your offers in a way that feels good for you
  • Why you need to go beyond the modality and find your magic
  • Focusing on the problem you solve and the results you achieve
  • The importance of believing in your offer
  • Creating freebies to get people on your email list
  • Getting in the flow of your genius
  • What happens when your offer doesn’t sell

Today on Uncommon Couch, I want to dig into a topic that I’ve seen pop up again and again from many of the clients I’ve coached. That involves creating an offer that’s sellable and interesting to their ideal clients vs. something that sounds interesting to the business owner.

Too often I’ve seen clients create offers that they think sounds intriguing, but their potential clients don’t see the obvious value in what they offer. They just don’t see the potential results or the topic isn’t salient to them.

The last thing that I want is for you to create hours creating an offer that doesn’t sell. Trust me, I know because I’ve been there and it is maddening. In order to invest in a solution, people have to have enough angst, or struggle associated with the problem. If their problem isn’t a big enough deal, they’re just not going to invest in it. Your perfect offer should be valuable, results-oriented, and sellable to your clients.

What you’ll find in this episode:

  • Why some offers don’t sell
  • Why angst is important when selling offers
  • Tips for coming up with an offer that people want
  • Making sure your personality is included in your offer
  • The “know, like, and trust” factor
  • The trial and error process involved with selling
  • How to test your topic
  • Tips for dealing with perfection

As business owners, there are so many things to keep track of. If you aren’t on top of it, it’s easy for things to fall between the cracks. That’s why project management tools are a must if you want to stay on top of everything. They can help give you the “second brain” your business needs.

Today on Uncommon Couch, I sat down with Meagan Beltekoglu, a ClickUp consultant, to talk about how to organize your business for less stress using tools like ClickUp. She shares tips for using ClickUp for everything from business tasks to working with virtual assistants.

Don’t feel bad if your business isn’t as organized as you’d like. You would be surprised at how many 7 and 8-figure businesses don’t have their stuff together either. What’s important is that you take that first step. Putting systems into place to help you remember everything with a project management tool frees up so much mental real estate so that you can be more present for your family and the other things that matter.

What you’ll find in this episode:

  • The first step in organizing the back end of your business
  • The importance of having a business hub
  • What ClickUp is
  • How Meagan helps her clients with ClickUp
  • How ClickUp helps Meagan in her everyday life
  • The “second brain” concept
  • How Meagan organizes her tasks in ClickUp
  • Tips for working with virtual assistants

When was the last time you practiced doing less?

As entrepreneurs, we often feel pressure–either external or internal–to keep a tight grip on our work. And on top of being high-powered business owners, we try to be full-time wives, mothers, and friends. If you’ve ever felt this pressure, you know how draining it can be. You also know it’s impossible to give your all to everything. So is it possible to lead a balanced life and grow your business at the same time?

In this episode, I’m chatting with six-figure success coach Wesley Reece about her work helping high-powered Christian businesswomen create balance while scaling their businesses. She’s explaining how releasing control can actually help you grow, and we’re both opening up about times we’ve experienced resistance in our businesses.

What you’ll find in this episode:

  • How Wesley landed in this line of work, and what her journey looks like now
  • How she shifted her business so she could be more present for her family
  • How to recognize when you need to make a change in your business
  • Surrendering to your path and how things are meant to be
  • How Wesley helps her clients release control and upgrade their businesses
  • Times when we’ve experienced resistance in our own businesses and how we overcame it
  • How to schedule your daily schedule to reflect a more balanced life

If I had to guess, I’d say you started your business because you wanted more freedom–to spend time with your family, structure your days how you see fit, and make as much money as you desire. But once you have a clear vision of what freedom looks like to you, how do you go about creating it in your life and business? In this episode, I’m explaining how you can achieve freedom in your life and business, whatever that looks like for you. I’m explaining how I defined my own version of freedom and created a business that afforded that for me. I’m also sharing five ways you can start creating freedom in your own business.

What you’ll find in this episode:

  • How to define your version of freedom in your life and business
  • How to determine what’s keeping you from your freedom
  • Why it’s important to unhook from the opinions of others and release your fear of critique
  • How to practice responding instead of reacting
  • What “flavors” of freedom you can create in your life, and how to determine which is most important to you
  • How to identify and embrace your “unique advantage”
  • How to let go of the things–both internal and external–that are limiting your freedom

Some business owners spend years searching for meaning in their businesses. They buy all the courses, hire all the coaches, and try all the “hacks”. But the key to finding purpose, alignment, and fulfillment in your business isn’t looking externally, but internally.

She’s explaining why it’s so important to shift your focus internally and do the mindset work. She’s sharing how we can scale our business and find more fulfillment by slowing down and doing what feels right, not just chasing the trends.

What you’ll find in this episode:

  • How her own burnout experience led Mimika to start coaching
  • Why alignment and purpose matter most in your business
  • How Mimika’s faith has guided her in her entrepreneurial journey

Fear of growth. Fear of rejection. Fear of failure. Fear of success. Our subconscious thoughts can hold us back if we’re not careful. They can keep us from attaining what we truly desire, in our personal lives and in our businesses. These thoughts can make us feel not good enough or afraid of reaching a milestone (whether it’s more clients or charging more for your services) as an entrepreneur.

It’s time to take back control of your subconscious mind. In today’s episode, I’m chatting with Sabine Schwartz, the Booked Solid Mompreneur, about how Rapid Transformational Therapy (RTT) addresses the root cause of what’s holding you back—the past trauma and experiences that live deep inside of you that affect everything you do. You’ll learn how this technique can help you release what’s blocking you and your growth and rewire your mind to help you achieve what you desire in your business and beyond.

What you’ll find in this episode:

  • How Sabine’s struggles in her health coaching business lead her to RTT and business coaching
  • How Sabine found her purpose helping mompreneurs to build businesses and make money
  • How our subconscious thoughts can hold us back in our personal and professional lives
  • How RTT and hypnosis get to the root cause of what’s blocking you (whether it’s money issues or imposter syndrome)
  • The importance of identifying what you truly desire and rewiring your mind (and actions) to get it
  • How positive self-talk and words of affirmation can make a huge difference in your personal and professional growth
  • The gift that is being able to confront your fears and move past them as an entrepreneur
  • The importance of resilience and fighting back against rejection
  • How networking and collaboration help you to grow intentional communities and increase your net worth

If there’s one thing I’ve learned as a business owner, it’s that no matter what you do, someone will tell you you’re doing it wrong. There’s always one voice out there who doesn’t believe, who thinks you’re bound to fail. But the true test of a successful and courageous entrepreneur is breaking free of those people-pleasing patterns and doing what feels right for you, even if it means going against the status quo.

In this episode, I’m talking about the “good girl” persona and how it can affect your business. I’m explaining the different people-pleasing patterns and habits that can form from this persona and how to disconnect from others’ opinions of you. Plus, I’m sharing how to reconnect with your own sense of self and get in touch with your inner badass.

What you’ll find in this episode:

  • The key traits of the “good girl” persona and how they can hurt your business
  • How to identify resent or disappointment you might be feeling towards your work
  • Why you shouldn’t make your business decisions from guilt or obligation
  • How to break free of the “good girl” patterns and take your own path
  • How to reconnect with your sense of self and vision for your life
  • How to disconnect from others’ opinions (or imagined opinions) of you

Being an entrepreneur can be overwhelming. Juggling strategic planning and finances with the creativity and goals that you want to achieve. Knowing when to grow, and knowing when to walk away from an idea. Following your intuition and making strategic choices. Balancing your professional and personal life, sometimes from the same space (whether it’s the couch or your home office). It’s fun … and it’s exhausting.

It’s easy to experience burnout and fatigue and to struggle with boundaries on the best of days. And the importance of taking time for you is more prevalent than ever.

Today I’m talking with Marcia Sheehan, co-founder of HerHideaways, a self-care retreat space for high-achieving women looking to add a little spark back into their lives. We’re chatting entrepreneurship, from surprising moments to difficult ones, and everything in between. And most importantly, discussing the importance of filling your cup: allowing yourself to be creative, to be in community with others, to take time for self-care, to cultivate fulfillment in your personal life.

Find what brings you joy, and light the spark.

What you’ll find in this episode:

  • How to possess faith and belief in the journey you’re on
  • Balance between control and surrender (control what you can and let go of the rest)
  • Understanding how to deal with stress and how that can affect your business
  • Balancing the professional and the personal when working from home (it’s a state of mind)
  • Why you shouldn’t force something that isn’t working
  • The importance of taking time for personal fulfillment

In this episode, I’m sharing my journey from skeptic to eager manifestor, plus what I learned on my way to my Quantum Manifestation Coach certification. I’ll never forget during my graduate training when a professor said that we shouldn’t use intuition in the field because it was “unreliable.” This has always been something that’s stuck with me and as I’ve learned more, I’ve definitely come to disagree with the statement. In this episode, I am sharing the 3 components of being a passionate and intuitive therapist. I explore the various ways that having a passionate stance can help you clearly market to your audience. I also talk about how being secure in your own uniqueness can help you to foster collaboration over competition with other providers. I encourage you to start checking in with yourself daily and bringing more of your creative and intuitive side to your work. I hope this episode will leave you feeling inspired to do just that!

What does it mean to have an uncommon practice? When I was in graduate training, I had an inner feeling that I didn’t want to grow a traditional practice. At first, I felt bad about it. I felt different. Traditional therapy all day, every day didn’t sound like the right avenue for me. The other things that therapists traditionally do like research, teaching or assessment didn’t sound like full-time jobs I wanted either.

I know I am not alone. Many other therapists, coaches and healers feel this way too. In this episode, I am exploring why I felt this way and the three elements of an uncommon practice. You’ll learn about not letting fears keep you stagnant, why you have to honor your values and so much more!

What you’ll find in this episode:

  • Why I always knew I didn’t want a traditional practice
  • The prerequisite for creating an uncommon practice
  • The 3 elements of an uncommon practice
  • Why you have to unhook from what others think and tap into your inner strength
  • How you can honor your values while running an uncommon practice
  • Why you shouldn’t let your fears hold you back
