Payton Sparks is truly the Big Man On Campus, whose tremendous size is matched by his sense of humor and passion for Indiana basketball.
Growing up a Hoosier fan in tiny Winchester, the 6'9" and 240 pound big man first stopped at Ball State where he put the MAC on notice, being named conference Freshman of the Year and Kyle Macy Freshman All-American. As a sophomore Payton helped new head coach and IU legend Michael Lewis turn the program around, notching 20 wins and once again filling up the stands with delighted Cardinal fans.
With success came opportunity, and still a Hoosier at heart, Payton leapt at the chance to join our beloved program under Coach Mike Woodson. And while it was much harder for us to convince him to come on our program, we're so glad he finally did!

But it was the winning… on some of the best and most beloved teams to ever play in Bloomington… that cemented Alan’s legendary status.

It has been an eventful several days for IU Athletics with virtually every current athletic program prevailing in big matchups over the last several days. We cover the improbable and historic comeback win for IUFB at Michigan St. before turning our attention to the most exciting start to a basketball season in many years. Ward is on a family vacation which opened the door for the first ever replacement “Guest Host” to break down the IUBB wins against Xavier and Miami University (of Ohio) and the overall state of IU Basketball 4 games in to the season. Such an important and prestigious position could only be filled by one man. A former Big Ten Player of the Year. One of the all-time greats and a man who never has to search for an opinion…BRIAN EVANS fills in for Ward and we get his unique and surprisingly upbeat analysis of IU Basketball.
Ward is back for the guest not today’s episode and he is one of the most polarizing players of the last many years at Indiana University. His talent was undeniable as he single-handedly won several games for IU Basketball when the odds were stacked against him. And, he had some head-scratching plays that drove many to the brink.
But behind the box scores, 3-pointers, turnovers and tattoos, there is the story of a young man who grew upon in New York, in love with the game of basketball. It started in parks with his brothers and with legends of the NYC basketball scene. It turned into playing varsity basketball in 7th and 8th grade and ultimately to a commitment to Tom Crean and Indiana University.
What started as a dream scenario with huge top-5 wins quickly turned into a nightmare with injuries turning into losses, turning into more losses and ultimately to a coach being fired. This young man’s story takes a turn when a new coach, Archie Miller, is brought in to run the program—and run it in a very different way. With no pre-existing relationship and faced with the prospect of sitting out a year or sticking it out at IU, this enigmatic player decided to stick it out. Building a relationship with the new coach was not an easy task nor was trying to play in a new and much more rigid system.
Losses continued to pile up, personal tragedy hit, fans directed their frustration and ire at him personally. Stress continued to mount and led to some very dark times that fans barely caught a glimpse of. But this young man persevered, sought help, and by the time his Senior year was wrapping up, IU Basketball was on the verge of returning to the NCAA Tournament. And then, the global Covid pandemic hit. It robbed him and so many like him of their senior year, their graduation and for a young man dedicated to getting Indiana back to the tournament, that dream too, died.
Our guest continued his basketball career internationally where he faced even more personal battles, this time with a health crisis but he has continued to persevere. He is healthy, he is playing basketball professionally and he is talking to us about it all. Our guest is DEVONTE GREEN!

Perhaps no Hoosier ever experienced such extreme highs and lows as Jay. As a freshman he barely saw the court for the first 16 games, including a 5-game academic suspension, yet averaged 19.2 points a game in conference and was named Big Ten Freshman of the Year.
As a sophomore he entered rehab and lost his scholarship, only to return and lead IU to its most unlikely conference title ever, burying 3 legendary buzzer beaters, all on his way to being named Big Ten Player of the Year and an All-American.
Jay was a truly special player, and remains a truly special man, and we are so proud to call him a Hoosier.

Sydney Parrish was the ultimate Indiana high school star, leading her Hamilton Southeastern Royals to a state title her junior year, then etching her name amongst the all-time greats by becoming Miss Basketball as a senior.
As a top-ranked, 5-star recruit she could’ve played anywhere she wanted, and initially chose Oregon as part of the consensus #1 recruiting class in the country. After a couple seasons out west, however, it was time to come home and play for Coach Moren and the now mighty Indiana Hoosiers.
IU fans everywhere rejoiced at this blockbuster news, and will be even more thrilled after getting to know this engaging, good-humored, hard-working and fiercely competitive young woman.

After a freshman season of battling illness and the depth chart, Top 80 & 4 star recruit Logan Duncomb is ready to show Hoosier nation why he was such a big get for our program. Literally. He’s 6’10” and swelled up to a rock solid 245 lbs!
No frills, Logan is as unique a personality as he is a talent. While no longer rocking the ‘stache he’s still got that 7’4” wingspan and a motor that never stops. Combine that with his championship pedigree and having spent the last year taking on the likes of Trayce Jackson-Davis and Race Thompson, we can’t wait to see Logan taking the court and the Big Ten by storm.

The Hysterics are delighted to welcome not one but two Hoosier stars to the show!
First up is country music star Clayton Anderson! As a kid he grew up idolizing Damon Bailey and arrived in Bloomington just in time to see IU reach the 2002 title game, and he stayed long enough to become the biggest music act in town. Clayton has since continued to build a devout following, and has just released his most personal album to date, Made in the USA, now available everywhere!
As if that wasn’t enough star power, next up is IU football stud defender Cam Jones! An unquestioned leader for Coach Tom Allen, Cam decided to return to IU for another season and all of Hoosier nation rejoiced. Since arriving from Memphis in the fall of 2018 his impact on the field and off can not be overstated, and the Hysterics are delighted and honored he has agreed to become the next Hoosier Hysterics NIL Collective Ambassador!

Jon McGlocklin is so legendary he has not one, but two nicknames… Jonny Mac and Mr. Buck.
Jonny Mac grew up in Franklin, Indiana a fan of the Hurryin’ Hoosiers and spurned all others suitors to join fellow sought-after recruits, Tom and Dick Van Arsdale, to play for Branch McCracken. All three went on to put up prodigious numbers at IU, all three went on to be drafted, and all three went on to become NBA All-Stars.
Jonny Mac was not only an All-Star, but started alongside Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and Oscar Robertson on one of the greatest basketball teams ever assembled, the 1971 NBA champion Milwaukee Bucks. After retirement he joined the Bucks broadcast team as color commentator, a job he held for an astonishing 45 years.
His greatest accomplishment, however, is off the court. This real-life Hoosier hero has raised almost 80 million dollars to fight childhood cancer with his remarkable Macc Fund https://maccfund.org/donation/

CJ Gunn is blazing his way to Bloomington this summer and Hoosier fans have much cause for excitement.
A 6’6 shooting guard out of Indianapolis, Gunn has the IU faithful chomping at the bit for his ability to score at all 3 levels, including knocking down over 37% of his three pointers in his final season. As a senior at Lawrence North he averaged over 23 points and 5 boards game and was named one of five finalists for Indiana’s Mr. Basketball, despite missing a big chunk of the season due to injury.
Beyond the court, it is clear that Indiana has found yet another impressive, engaging and dedicated young man ready to don the candy stripes and fill us all with Hoosier pride.

Armond “Money” Hill grew up hooping on the legendary playgrounds of NYC, earning his way into the hallowed halls of Princeton where he won Ivy League MVP and an NIT Title under iconic Coach Pete Carril.
A top-ten draft pick, Coach Hill played 8 seasons in the NBA for the likes of Hubie Brown, Lenny Wilkens and Don Nelson before he himself turned to coaching. After 18 years in the prep and collegiate ranks, including 8 years as the head coach of Columbia, Hill broke into the NBA under Terry Stotts in Atlanta.
A year later Doc Rivers brought Hill on as an assistant coach in Boston where they won an NBA championship in 2008 before moving on for a seven-year run with the Clippers. Khristian Lander was a high school phenom out of Evansville. The nation's top point guard in his class, he was destined to become a McDonald's All-American and leading contender for Mr. Basketball his senior year. Instead, he reclassified and committed to play for Archie Miller at IU.
Arriving in Bloomington as a 17-year-old freshman, things couldn't have gone much worse for Khristian, the entire Hoosier program, or for a world thrown headlong into a pandemic. He struggled for playing time, and when he did make it onto the court things usually didn't go well. Simply put, Khristian lost his confidence.
After the season ended and Coach Miller was let go, Khristian was ready for a fresh start and entered his name into the transfer portal. But then Mike Woodson came to town.
Khristian soon recommitted to the Hoosiers. In doing so he has rediscovered joy in playing the game and has once again found his swagger. Even when he was just a baby, Bettina and Brandon knew their son possessed extraordinary athleticism, but as he grew so too did the list of Jakai's prodigious talents and passions. As a student, artist, volunteer and even entrepreneur, he excelled at whatever gained the attention of his laser focus.

Ali Patberg was born to hoop. With her father Ron as coach, she led Columbus North High School to its first-ever Class 4A state championship her senior year en route to being named 2015 Indiana Miss Basketball, Gatorade Indiana High School Player of the Year, and USA Today All-USA Indiana Player of the year. And oh yeah, she also won a GOLD MEDAL with the 2015 Under-19 USA National Team.
Honoring her early commitment to Notre Dame, Ali was sidelined with an injury as a freshman and after her sophomore season decided to at last attend the school she grew up cheering for, Indiana University. Forced to missed yet another season due to the old transfer rules, Ali gained invaluable experience going head-to-head with Tyra Buss in practice and cheering on her teammates to a WNIT title in front of a packed Assembly Hall crowd.
When she finally took the floor as a Hoosier her impact was immediate and colossal. Under the guidance of Coach More, in the past two years Ali and her talented teammates, notably Grace Berger and Mackenzie Holmes, have taken IUWBB to the cusp of a Big Ten title and Final Four birth.

Coached by his legendary father in Ft. Wayne and then Marion, James Blackmon, Jr. battled back from a knee injury in high school to finish as one of the most prolific scorers the state has ever seen.
After an early commitment to IU, he de-committed and sent Hoosier nation into frenzied panic. Then, much to all our relief, he once and for all decided to play for his home-state school. And did he ever.
“Jimmy Buckets” hit the ground running as a freshman lighting up the conference and putting the country on notice, only to suffer a season-ending knee-injury his sophomore year. His junior year the team was loaded, and after top-5 wins over Kansas and then UNC, seemed poised for a Final Four run, only to see James lose more games to injury, and have O.G. Anunoby go down & out for the year. It was a disappointing end for one of the best shooters Bloomington has ever seen.
Though the ups and downs of James Blackmon Jr.’s IU career were many, he was and continues to be a player, and a human being, the whole state of Indiana can be proud to call one of its own.

Mackenzie Holmes grew up in the gym, thanks to not just one but two parents that coached the game she was born to play. Speaking of two, “Mack” would lead her high school team to back-to-back state championships and go on to win 2019 Maine Gatorade Player of the Year.

We're not sure how this happened either. What was meant to be a singular conversation with everybody's favorite spice bomb, Coach Kenya Hunter, suddenly gave way to a 4x100 relay of the IU men’s basketball staff appearing on the podcast.
After a great start with Kenya, he smoothly handed off the Hysterics baton to Coach Ya, who during a lively discussion informed us Kenya had, in fact, left the office and was getting in a work out. What??
Eventually Coach Ya had to depart and we were left all alone, on a Zoom, staring at Kenya’s empty chair.
Before long the unsuspecting Director of Operations Benny Sander, and the Team & Recruiting Coordinator Brian Walsh, wandered into the office. Wise as he is, Benny insulted us and quickly left, but Walsh took pity and hung around to talk shop. Ultimately, however, he had to get on with his life, too.
Fortunately, this IS our life, so we decided to stick around, wondering what might happen next. Maybe Kenya would finally return? Perhaps Dane will make a last second and overall disappointing appearance? Possibly both of those things??

Grace Berger is one of the most accomplished players to ever lace them up for the Indiana University Women's Basketball Team, and she isn't done yet.
After a quiet freshman season she exploded onto the scene as a sophomore, routinely stuffing the stat line, winning Big Ten Player of the Week and being named to the All-Big Ten First Team. As a junior she made another seismic jump, averaging 15.4 points, 6.8 rebounds and 4.6 assists while leading the nation in triple-doubles (3), being named to the All-Big Ten First Team, was on the Cheryl Miller Award Top 10 watchlist, and was an All-American Honorable Mention.
And of course then there is the fact she was a shining star who helped lead the Hoosiers to an upset of #1 seed NC State in the Sweet Sixteen on their way to the Elite Eight for the first time in program history.

An Indianapolis high school phenom, Eric Gordon grew up wanting to play for IU. When Kelvin Sampson took charge in Bloomington it became a reality. Spurning Bruce Weber and Illinois, his time as a Hoosier began with controversy, only to end in more… the firing of his coach and the collapse of his team.
But when Eric Gordon was on the court, few to don the Candy Stripes ever did it better. Paired with DJ White, the Hoosiers were a force to be reckoned with, starting the season at 17-1 and ranked in the top ten. They had all the makings of a Final Four team.
Gordon dominated upon arrival, and didn’t even let a broken wrist derail his historic run, scoring an astounding 21 points a game on his way to winning Big Ten Freshman of the Year.
Gordon's brief but brilliant college career ended when he was drafted 8th by the LA Clippers, and has been making us proud ever since. Winning 6th Man of the Year and the All Star 3-point contest, he's averaged over 16 points a game during a 13-year NBA run that is still going strong.

In 2008 Fred Glass was hired as IU A.D. to salvage a dispirited athletic department reeling from the tragic loss of Terry Hoeppner and firing of Kelvin Sampson. Fred accomplished so much more than that, leading over a decade of astounding growth and unprecedented success, both athletically and academically, for all 24 teams representing his beloved alma mater. By the time he handed the reins to Scott Dolson, Fred had secured his legacy as one of the most important Hoosiers of our time, and thus the IU President's Medal of Excellence was bestowed upon him..
And yet his achievements beyond Bloomington are equally impressive. At age 29 he was Chief of Staff for Indiana Governor Evan Bayh. Later he was instrumental in the building of Lucas Oil Stadium, thus ensuring the Colts would stay in Indianapolis. He then went on to help his hometown secure the Super Bowl in 2012, and it's place in the permanent rotation for hosting the NCAA Final Four.

Heading to Bloomington with his jump shot in tow, Woody became one of the great scorers in Hoosier history. Behold Tom Bolyard. The man who led Ft. Wayne South Side to an IHSAA title his junior year and was a Parade All-American as senior. The man who played for Branch McCracken and took the court with Walt Bellamy, Jimmy Rayl, the Van Arsdales, John McGlocklin, and still somehow became one of the all-time great scorers in Indiana history. Drafted by the NBA, Tom instead became a coach. He soon found himself back in Bloomington assisting Lou Watson and developing the likes of George McGinnis and Steve Downing. Once Bobby Knight arrived, Tom began his work with alumni outreach, driving the young coach around the state to press the flesh. In other words, Tom Bolyard has been a vital party of IU since 1959. De'Ron Davis is a survivor. He grew up in the crosshairs of the Bloods & the Crips, raised by a strict father who knew his son was destined for greater things. De'Ron became the #1 rated player in the country, only for his father to pass away. His ranking fell, but he took his high school team to back-to-back state titles and punched his ticket for Bloomington. D.J. White was born & raisedin football-frenzied Alabama, but soon realized his destiny lie north, in basketball-bonkers Indiana. His IU career blasted off to an incredible start, only to be hampered by injuries and thrown into uncertainly by the firing of Mike Davis. Being the true Hoosier he was, D.J. stuck around for Kelvin Sampson & Eric Gordon, finding himself leading a team with legitimate Final Four potential. And then the roof caved in. But D.J. never gave up and never gave less than 100%, cementing his legacy as an all-time Indiana great.

Both paths to Bloomington were long and winding for Mike Roberts. A childhood hooping in Terre Haute instilled in him a burning passion and determination to come back home and play for IU. Weeks before his freshman season Bobby Knight was fired, but "Boss" stuck by his teammates and they ended up playing for a national title.
