Brooke is a long-time pet business owner who has a large pet sitting and dog walking business in Los Angeles. Luis has been in business for 12 years in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. He has a thriving dog walking business. Lately his clients have been using his pet service as more of a ‘ride share app” (using his services periodically instead of consistently) which has made planning very difficult because his clients aren’t being consistent and scheduling regular, ongoing service like they used to do. Many have also been requesting his service during his off hours (early in the morning and late at night) which is creating a lot of stress for him and his team. Tonya has owned her pet sitting, dog boarding and dog walking business for over 10 years. She’s struggling with the pet industry competition in her area, especially the large amount of Rover pet sitters, hobby and neighborhood dog walkers and pet care providers. Tonya is understandably feeling confused and upset because the people reaching out to her for pet services lately aren’t willing to pay her professional pet sitter prices. Jeremy has owned his pet care business for a few years, and he’s got a lot of 5-star Yelp reviews and many clients who love his pet services. In this coaching session, he’s feeling frustrated because he would like to get referrals from his clients, but it rarely happens. He’s not sure what to do to get referrals from his clients without being pushy. Heather wants to have more time with her kids and herself. She bought a pet sitting business and now that’s she’s been running it for a while, she wants to change some fundamental ways she’s currently running it. Like a lot of pet business owners (especially newer pet business owners), Heather is trying to be too many things and doing too much for many of her clients which is causing her to feel burned out and stuck in a rut. She wants to create more of a “plug-and-play” or turnkey business. Taking on new overnight pet sitting clients is often anxiety-producing for Heather because it’s such an intimate experience with her staff in the client’s home, sleeping in their bed, etc. and she never knows how it’s going to turn out. She is also feeling that her many clients have become her bosses which is leading her to feel like she has 50 bosses. Also, holidays feel very overwhelming for her because she gets so many potential clients reaching out desperate for care and they may only use her company for that one holiday which feels like a lot of work for a small amount of money. Stephanie has had a dog business for many years and though she wants to continue growing her pet business, she also wants to create a new online business that is targeted to pet parents. She is thinking that an online business could be a good “branch” off her current pet business. She has a lot of questions about logistics around creating an online business and how to balance both her service-based business with an online business. Today’s podcast coaching client is Kristen. She boards dogs in her home and has three sons who keep her busy. She is going through a divorce and her soon-to-be ex-husband supported most her financial needs and now she needs to make more money in her dog boarding business. What becomes apparent as we begin this coaching session is that she needs to get clear how much she needs to make each month. We discuss the gifts that can happen when she does financial tracking and also the best way to track business and personal numbers. We also explore the goal setting process and why it’s important for Kristen to do and how her financial goals may positively impact her net profit. We also discuss the glass ceiling and what can help her move beyond current financial blocks. On a personal level, one of Kristen’s barriers that has affected her self-esteem (and earning) is that her prior partner didn’t support her and in fact, put her down a lot. She experienced a lot of belittling from him, and it really wore down her self-esteem. Now that she’s out of that relationship and can see clearly, she needs to strengthen herself internally, cultivate confidence and self-esteem both while living her life and running her dog boarding business. This is an episode from my other podcast that is for all types of business owners called Business Pathfinder. I wanted to share this episode with you, dear pet business owner, because I think you may find it helpful too. A lot of pet business owners suffer from what my coaching client in this session is struggling with here. It’s my hope that if you also struggle with what my coaching client is grappling with, that hearing this session will help you - and perhaps even begin to help you heal, too. My coaching client in this session is Alex. She is a software engineer and entrepreneur in Poland. She helps business owners master technology through a membership site she created called Tech Club. Our conversation at the beginning of the session may at first seem like it’s not relevant to Alex’s business but as you listen, you’ll hear it sets the stage for where we end up going in this session. Alex is one of those entrepreneurs who “has really good starts” but after her initial success, her projects seem to fizzle out. We bring who we are into our business. If we’re not consciously aware of what we’ve learned about money and work from our parents and grandparents, we may unconsciously carry those parental beliefs that aren’t ours into our work. This can also happen with childhood wounds that have not yet been healed - they can profoundly impact how we run our businesses, as you’ll hear is the case with Alex. Like SO many business owners, and even some people who don’t have a business, Amy is having a difficult time detaching from her phone. She feels like her phone is always a part of her. She has no idea how to fully let it go, even for a bit each day, so that she can actually let go when she’s not working. She feels like she’s living the life of that meme you may have seen out there – “Why did I quit my 9-5 job to work 24/7 in my business?” We cover a lot of ground in this session, and it ended in a very different spot than we anticipated it. Brionna provides pet care services including vacation visits and mobile nail trims. She’s having a difficult time determining how to price her pet services. She often feels awkward and uncomfortable when it comes to stating how much she charges.
Even though Brionna will tell clients her highest rate, she will often back pedal if a client protests that her rate is too high. Sometimes she’ll voluntarily offer a discount even when they don’t say a word about her price!
This pattern of not charging what she believes her time and energy are worth is creating resentment toward her business and disappointment in herself. Brionne needs help getting out of this disempowering cycle.

In today’s coaching session I’m working with Gabrielle, a pet sitter in Post Falls, Idaho. Gabrielle has expanded her pet sitting service company to include providing dog treats, items like training treats and large and small peanut butter biscuits. Gabrielle wants to expand the treat portion of her business and eventually add other services so her company can be a “one stop shop” for pet owners. Lois started her dog walking and dog training business while still working her corporate job. She walked and trained dogs on her lunch break and before and after her corporate job! After a while, she realized that she was making more money walking dogs than working in her corporate job as an accountant. In today’s coaching session, I’m working with Tina, a pet business owner who feels like she’s constantly putting fires in her business. She has 5 part-time staff to help her, but she gets a lot of last-minute calls from them asking for time off which causes her to have to jump in and be the emergency backup. She needs to raise her prices and wants to know if she should charge a gas surcharge given how high the gas prices have gone recently. In today’s coaching session, I’m working with Cora, a pet business owner who sometimes struggles with occasional bouts of depression and anxiety. When it hits her, it causes her to suffer - and her business to suffer. When she’s not experiencing depression and anxiety her energy level is high, her response time to clients is quick, and she’s able to bill clients in a prompt manner as well as other necessary business tasks. When she’s going through a challenging time, things look very different: it can take her a week or two to return client calls, it can be like slogging through quicksand to bill her clients in a timely manner and she has very little energy to run her business. If you are suffering from depression or anxiety, please see a medical professional. In today’s coaching session I’m not trying to diagnose Cora, nor cure her anxiety or depression. I can’t do that nor would attempt to do that. I am simply having a conversation with Cora about depression and anxiety and how it impacts her business and her life. I’m not trying to fix Cora’s depression or anxiety but rather to help her navigate her business during this time. Val Goren is an Atlanta-based pet sitter and dog walker who has a quickly growing pet sitting and dog walking business. Like many pet pros who provide home-based pet services, Val is having challenges managing the vast amount of client keys she and her staff are responsible for. Stephanie is a rock star business owner who is based in Texas. She’s owned her business for a few years and, in many ways, has done a great job running it. However, due to the pandemic and other issues, she’s now got a lot of business challenges she’s dealing with and she’s at a loss for how to fix them. My coaching client today is Kelsey who runs a pet grooming and dog kennel in Nevada. Kelsey is experiencing a lot of stress with employees who say they will do something but then don’t do it. She’s also struggling because she’s short staffed and is having a hard time finding quality people.

Many pet business owners are reevaluating their pet business as a result of going through the pandemic.

The exercise is called Active Imagination and it was developed by Carl Jung, a Swiss psychoanalyst who began using this way of working with his patients when nothing else seemed to work.

Here’s the truth: it felt very vulnerable for all of us on today’s episode to have this conversation about this difficult topic.
You’ll hear from each of the guests about what caused them to feel vulnerable about coming on the podcast and talking about this subject.
My vulnerability came from being afraid I’d mistakenly ask my guests an inappropriate question or perhaps even offend one of them with something I’d ask or say, because I may not know the “right” thing to ask or say when it comes to race.
But, in spite of my discomfort, I decided to host this episode and I invited these courageous guests to come on the podcast -and they said yes. I’m grateful to each one of them for agreeing to join me for this conversation and for what they shared in this episode.
I decided to have this conversation with these brave ladies because I wanted to learn more more about racism and, if possible, to help you listeners learn more about racism too. I wanted to learn how racism affects pet professionals. I wanted to learn more about white privilege and what that means to black people. I wanted to give black pet professionals space to let their voice be heard. I wanted to learn about the subtle -and not so subtle- ways racism affects those who are impacted by it.
I want to be supportive of you pet business owners who need support during this challenging time as well as pull back the curtain on racism in the pet business industry.
Besides me, there are four speakers on today’s episode. Three are pet sitters and dog walkers and one person, Zuri Walker, is not a pet business owner. Even though Zuri is not a pet business owner, I felt that having her on today’s episode could be helpful.
Zuri is my friend and she’s a transformational life coach. I met her years ago when I was living in Bali and she was living there too. I invited her to be on this episode because a few years ago I inadvertently said something racist to her which hurt her and it impacted our friendship in a negative way. I didn’t mean for the comment I made to be racist but it was and I can see that now. I learned a lot from that painful experience and from Zuri sharing so openly and honestly (both then and in this episode) about how what I said in that moment impacted her.
I hope when you hear what happened between me and Zuri that it may help those of you who perhaps are speaking or acting in ways that aren’t appropriate but you don’t yet realize it. I’m hopeful that this open and honest conversation between the five of us can create more awareness for you listeners in terms of what you say and do.
The three pet professionals, and Zuri, are all bright lights and I think you’ll recognize that spark in each one of them as you hear what they have to share today. I’m grateful they said yes to having this conversation with me about this difficult subject.

Today’s coaching session: Nikki and her wife Stef own a dog running / dog walking business in Canada. They’ve had their pet business for 3 years and have 15 people working for them – and they need to hire a lot more given the demand for the service they are providing!

The coaching client: Jill has had her pet sitting and dog walking business for over five years and she just hired a couple of great employees to help her with the pet services. Now her main focus is to make space in her business in order to have a baby. She’s currently providing about 60% of the services and her current employees cover about 40%. Within the next 10 months she’d like to have staff cover all of the pet services that she currently covers. She’s confused on how many people she should hire to replace her and how to begin to step away from the business in order to create a new life (literally and figuratively!)
Here’s what Jill wrote before the session:

We’ve been in business for 5 1/2 years. It has currently myself and my partner and we are stretched as thin as we can go. We want to have a baby next year but this business is our household income so we need to get set up for employees so we can grow the business while stepping back if / when needed.
There seem to be a lot of businesses that are stuck where I am. I think a lot of listeners will be able to relate to our discussion. There are a ton of directions I want to take my business but really need help narrowing down the best path. The coaching client: Kayla has had her home-based dog boarding and dog daycare business for over 15 years. She is excited about wanting to add the new service of “daytime dog adventures and field trips” but she’s confused about how to even create a bit of time in her always busy days to begin offering this service. She knows she wants to hire someone to help with the dog boarding and daycare but because she’s been doing that business for so many years and could do it in her sleep she has no idea even what she does or how she does it so training someone new feels overwhelming. On top of this, she feels exhausted from working so many hours a day so the thought of having to expend more energy to find someone feels draining to her.

The coaching client: Jesse is a pet sitter and dog walker who started her pet business a little over 5 years ago. She has 10 dog walkers and pet sitters who work for her. Even though she’s got a lot of people working for her she finds that she’s somehow working too much! On top of that, Jesse is taking her first vacation since having hired staff and her vacation is in 2 weeks – so she needs to get someone lined up right away to help her with the phone and emails so she doesn’t have to bring her work with her to the remote island where she’ll be vacationing. (Working on a vacation = buzzkill!)
Here’s what Jesse wrote before the session:
“Hi Kristin,
I have built a successful business and love what I do. I have read a few of your books and feel that I just need some help putting some of the ideas into motion. I am feeling burned out and I know that I need more down time/family time/travel, etc. I often work 5-7 days a week and I know it isn't sustainable and need a fix asap.
I'm at a point in my business where I need to stop growing or figure out how to work less and let go of some control. I have considered hiring a manager, but I have a hard enough time finding quality/reliable dog walkers. I've started to make baby steps such as trying to take some Fridays off, doing fewer overnights, and am thinking about potentially hiring more dog walkers in the coming months. I think I'm likely a workaholic and it is negatively impacting my personal life and I want to find solutions.”

Today’s coaching client: Michelle started her pet business in 2016 and didn’t expect it to become a full-time business but it grew organically and the business eventually grew organically to be a full time business. It felt right to only run her pet business and she just went for it! She loves her business but is finding it hard to focus on the tasks she especially loves to do to grow her business – especially the networking side of it. Unlike many of the pet business owners that I’ve coached, because Michelle has connected with so many of the local pet business owners she does not suffer from the isolation that sometimes occurs for pet care providers and in fact, she wants to put more of her time and energy into networking but is finding it difficult since she’s working so much each day. She feels confused on where to begin to free up some of her time in order to give more energy to those tasks that are in her zone of genius or her “sweet spot”.

Alexis has had her pet sitting and dog walking business for 10 years. She has a very easy time attracting clients but is having a really hard time finding good staff members, which is causing her business to not be as successful as she’d like to be. And because she doesn’t have enough staff, she is also suffering from business burnout because she’s having to step in as the emergency back up.

New Jersey pet sitter and dog walker Liz has PTSD when it comes to hiring a manager. She had a really bad experience with her previous manager and, understandably, it has made her afraid to take a risk and hire another manager. She also is having a hard time finding and keeping pet sitters and dog walkers because, like most pet sitters, she’s got a highly-developed “caretaker” nature which is great for clients and pets but it’s impacting her ability to manage her staff.

The scenario: Barbara is feeling confused about how to move forward. She lives in a rural area that is spread out and she works full-time in a 9-5 job while also trying to grow her pet sitting business. Barbara’s had her business for 18 years but it’s been more of a hobby and now she wants to turn it into a full-time (and more professional) business.

A few years into my pet business, I had what most would define as success: lots of staff and clients - but it wasn’t my version of success. Before I had an established morning routine practice, I used to fly out of bed in the morning, grab my tea or coffee and get to work! But… then I realized that I needed to be deliberate and intentional when I started my day in order to set myself up for success. Taking specific actions in the morning has helped me so much personally and professionally, so I wanted to share more about my morning routine with you today.
It’s important that your morning routine is able to shift and change as you and your pet business shift, change and grow.
When I was single and living alone my morning routine was very different than it is now! I’m married now, and though I still have an established morning routine to set up myself and my business for success, part of my morning routine also includes spending some quality time with my husband.
