This is a fact: A good book has the power to change your life.
But if you hate reading (or never have the time to pick up a good book) where do you begin? If you struggle to absorb the information or find it hard to implement the knowledge you're learning, how do you read more effectively?
Before I started reading regularly (and that was not that long ago), I thought I hated reading. Seriously, the idea of picking up a book used to bore me to tears. It wasn't until I developed new techniques to maximise the effectiveness of my reading that I started to see the sheer benefit of learning from the people who have come before me. The game changed that day and I have been sharing my secrets with my clients ever since.
In this replay episode of my podcast series, I reveal that technique so you can use it too.

Mind your language! No Oliver isn’t going to tell you to stop swearing (in fact his off mic language is pretty x-rated). No he’s more concerned about using words that do more harm than dropping the F-bomb!

More and more leaders are not makeing time or thinking of themselves first.
What about you?
What can you do to help yourself first; as a leader?
You can only help and support others if you help yourself first.
In today's episode, Stephen and I explore the importance of looking after and putting yourself first.

When we agreed for my Grandfather to move in with us, I anticipated that we would probably encounter some issues. After all, that's expected when an elderly family member begins living with you - isn't it?
Little did I realise quite how much stress and trauma my family would find ourselves under as time progressed and my Grandfather's health began to deteriorate.
In this episode, I'd like to shine a light on all of the clues that I missed. I also want to ask you an important question: Are you blinded by excessive stress and don't even know it? Listen on to find out.

Where do you want to get to in life and work? What is it you want?

And then we procrastinate when we need to take action.
This isn't just about work and leadership; this is about life...
And finding the courage to use our time wisely.

It’s my belief that we tend to put off things that will help us. There are likely to be a whole host of reasons for this.
In this episode Oliver challenges this approach and makes some suggestions about how to change this behaviour.
How many times have you thought:
“I wish I’d done that sooner”
“That was easier than I feared”
“That didn't anywhere near as long as I thought it would”
Or something very similar. Soooooo, have a listen to my short episode to see if you can’t kick start some action!

Do you have anyone you can turn to for advice or to share your concerns?

Do not panic!
Do not lose hope!
This episode is going to help anyone struggling to maintain their goals at any time of the year.

In some ways this episode is very easy to explain. Does they way we work need to change?
Is 9-5 still okay?
Is it right to expect an amount of hours to be work owed in exchange for a salary or should it be about the value/RoI?
Should we work more from home or less from home?
Should companies be responsible for your home office/workstation?
There world of work is changing at an incredible pace and we discuss all many factors in this episode.
http://www.hillcoachingcompany.co.uk/
Oliver hijacks his own podcast series in this episode to share some interesting insights into people’s engagement at work.
Spoiler alert, it’s not great news!
Now we know statistics can’t always be trusted however these stats deserve further attention and discussion.
Since Lockdown 1 the world of work has changed and will never be the same as it was beforehand. Keeping people engaged at work has never been more important and arguably, it’s never been so hard…

How many times do we consider how the other person sees, hears and feels things? If we are honest the answer to that is either rarely or never (it probably also depends on who the person is).
The one thing both Stephen and I can guarantee is that we are all different. Yet, we often think people should think and act like we do. We often expect people to carry out a job or role in the same way as everybody else. We often expect people to share our values.
I could go on. The point of the episode is to explain how we are ALL different to one another and that we need to starting respecting and acknowledging this in all walks of life.

We have deliberately NOT titled this episode ‘Setting Realistic New Year's Resolutions’ as this episode is relevant throughout the year.
However, It’s as good a time as any to drop this episode as by the time you're hearing it (15th January 2024 onwards) it's a good bet that many of the things people set out to do in 2024 have already faltered.
It’s okay! Stephen and I come across this all the time and we ourselves fall foul of at times (and we’re supposed to be good at this stuff). So you’re not alone. The trouble is we don’t make our goals realistic, in fact, often what we think are goals aren’t even goals…

James Taylor, a client and friend of HCC, is one of the most comfortable and natural sales people we’ve ever known.
He’s secured many millions of pounds worth of business with many well known businesses. Perhaps most notably Microsoft.
His insights are invaluable to any budding salesperson or for anybody who’s simply looking to keep improving.
Do you do these five things?

In this episode Stephen and Oliver talk about the importance of not comparing ourselves with others.
Whether we like it or not we ALL do it. Some of us are better at hiding it than others!
However, they’re a lot of reasons why this isn’t helpful.
Firstly we’re all different. Therefore it’s not likely we’ll find it easy to replicate others' actions.
Secondly a lot of people who seem to ‘be great’ aren’t quite what they’d like you to believe they are!

In this episode Social Media expert and guru Chris Reeve gives some advice on how to navigate Social Media and its various challenges.

How often do you keep things going long after they were ever helpful/useful?
How many people do you know that keep tolerating poor behaviours/performance from others around them?

Sometimes people think coaches are a bit ‘know it all’ or are threatened by us as they wrongly think we have out sh@t together.
Wrong, wrong and wrong. We have a lot of experiences and knowledge to share and we care passionately about helping people.

There is a strong argument that the modern treatment of allergies is the wrong way round.
Allergies occur and we are prescribed antihistamine (more often than not).
We don’t check on our gut health first. Is it possible that a lot of our allergies are simply caused by poor gut health?

This episode focuses on something very close to Oliver's heart. The changes in the seasons and the potential impact it has on you.
Oliver shares how challenging he finds the Autumn through Winter seasons. Stephen recognises the challenges it brings and between them they hope to reassure people that may also be struggling that it's okay and it's normal.

But why? Have a listen to find out.

It seems weird to feel the need to even talk about this one.
However, Oliver and Stephen are increasingly concerned that people are discouraged to apologise these days. For a whole host of reasons.

In this episode Oliver and Stephen talk about the importance of remembering where you’ve come from.
Too often we judge ourselves on our current circumstances and do not reflect on what we’ve achieved on the journey to where we are now.
We risk judging ourselves too harshly and failing to learn from past experiences.
http://www.hillcoachingcompany.co.uk/
Have you ever been on ‘a diet’. The chances are quite high you have or that someone you know has been.
You definitely need to hear what Ollie has to say about diets (and the word diet in particular).

For many companies and their staff it is 6 monthly appraisal time.
Stephen and I thought it was worth sharing our two pennies worth on appraisals/performance reviews.
We encounter a lot of poor processes and hope that you won’t hear these problems reflecting your company/place of work.

Testosterone, Estrogen, Menopause. These are all topics that are getting a lot more exposure than they used to. However, there is still a fundamental lack of knowledge in these key areas of health.
Ollie covers this challenging subject in fascinating detail and implores people to rethink what they know about testosterone and estrogen.

Stephen and I agree this is one of our favourite episodes to date. It’s not solely about religion. Stephen talks very passionately about his faith whilst Oliver looks at faith from slightly a different perspective.
The importance of believing in yourself, standing up for what you believe in and the importance of not judging others is a large part of this episode.
We hope it’s not too deep for listeners and above all else we hope it helps.
https://www.hillcoachingcompany.co.uk
Too many of us are looking for the quick fix. The quick fix doesn’t exist! It’s about setting a strong base to start from and then gradually make improvements, consistently, over time we see the greatest results. Are you jumping straight into level 3, as Ollie talks about in this episode.

Early September can be a tough time for a lot of people. Many have enjoyed long holidays or extended breaks. They’ve often spent it with people they love and/or care about very much or have been to places that have left a mark. Returning to the grind of ‘normal life’ can prove extra challenging this time of year.
Today's episode with Stephen aims to help you look at this differently and embrace those feelings moving forward.

Many of us are on a ticking time bomb when it comes to Blood Glucose Management. This predominantly leads to diabetes. However this isn’t the only ailment linked with Blood Glucose issues and more importantly Ollie is seeing stress as a major contributor not simply obesity.

Stephen raises the importance of social interaction, what it does for you and why there is a growing issue around social interaction.

How often do you say no?
Very few people like saying no.

Looking back, how did that go for you and them?
Has anyone ever not met your expectations?
Have you ever failed to live up to somebody else's expectations?
How did this feel?
Stephen really enjoyed setting Oliver up for this one.

Inspired by a conversation Oliver had recently. How do you help someone that has no idea they need help?
This is a coach's dilemma. We know how much we can help and want to help as many people as we can. BUT how to reach the people we know we can help but we also know aren’t looking for help.
This is a meaty one!
Let us know what you think.

There’s a lot of talk about values. Company values. Family values. Your own personal values. However, how many of us could tell someone else what those values were and without hesitation? It’s something that really gets Stephen very frustrated and Oliver is quite happy to get him going. Let us know what you think.

How many times do you say or hear someone else say ‘I’m okay’ when being asked ‘how are you?’.

This week's episode is aimed at helping you recognise that you’re not competing with anybody but yourself.
Comparing yourself to others can be draining and often leads to distraction away from what you need to be doing.
Focusing on ‘you’ is how you move forward. Not from judging and comparing yourself harshly against others.
Let us know what you think.

This week Stephen and I talked about quality 'me time'. Far too many people get very little time to themselves. The pace of life these days means we've lost touch with ourselves and don't like to spend time on our own. However, time by ourselves (with no distractions, like social media and smartphones) is priceless. Some of people's greatest ideas have come from moments of clarity gained during times of on their own. Let us know what you think. https://www.hillcoachingcompany.co.uk
This may seem painstakingly obvious and so easy to say (whilst being much harder to do).
However, in this episode Stephen and I challenge the way of being and thinking that stops us from being happy. Is it really that hard to do something you enjoy more regularly than you currently enjoy?
More importantly won’t you be a better version of yourself for doing something that makes you happy? The knock on effects of becoming that better version of yourself will have far reaching benefits…
https://www.hillcoachingcompany.co.uk
In this episode Stephen and Oliver discuss the lie most of us tell ourselves. "I don't have enough time to do that" or "I've been meaning to do that but I haven't got enough time". Hmmmm. We're not sure we believe you and I bet we could find things you have miraculously found time for that you needn't have? Have a listen and see what you think. By all means tell us we're wrong (and how we are wrong). (Psssst! It may not be all your fault. People also steal your time)! http://www.hillcoachingcompany.co.uk/

Managing any sort of change can be challenging in an organisation. If the last year has shown us anything, it's that businesses can adapt pretty quickly to change when they need to.
However, our new challenge is even more important (yet easily overlooked): How do we properly adapt to the slow relaxation of the effects of the pandemic? And more importantly, how do we bring our staff members along so that everybody supports the change taking place? Those are the questions in today's podcast. Listen to find out more.
It’s easy to want to force your opinion on others in order to get them to align to your own point of view.
Perhaps you’re trying to change another person’s behaviour or maybe you’re trying to get them to change their mind about something. In any case, forcing your opinion on them is likely to have the opposite effect to what you want them to do.
In this podcast episode, I’ll discuss the problems with this approach and how we can more effectively begin to communicate our thoughts and ideas more effectively.

When Jack Reeve and Chris Reeve sat down to record the first episode of Talk Norwich City, they had no idea how big it would become. In fact, in those fledgling days, they couldn't be sure anyone would want to listen to what they had to say. Several seasons later, having amassed a following that only others could dream of achieving, Talk Norwich City is a household name amongst supporters. In this podcast episode, I am going to outline the actions that Jack and Chris took to make their dream a reality. And you can follow in their steps to make your dream a reality too.
In this episode, I unite two of my passions - coaching and Norwich City Football Club. Now, before you gasp in horror at listening to a podcast about football, let me assure you that there is method in my madness here.
I want to draw your attention to one specific individual - NCFC Sporting Director, Stuart Webber. This person has demonstrated excellent leadership and I believe we can learn a lot about how he leads an organisation - through the good times and the bad.
Webber stands up for what he believes in, he stands up for his colleagues too, he doesn't make knee-jerk reactions and he sticks to his values and his principles. These are all values that we can relate to and by making a concerted effort to learn from someone like Stuart Webber, we can all become better leaders for our teams and for our staff.
In my previous podcast episode, I spoke about the techniques which have helped me to develop a love of reading. If you haven't listened to that episode yet, make sure you queue it up after this one - it's not to be missed.
However, techniques only go so far and you need to be reading books (and surrounding yourself with people) that are truly inspirational and have a positive impact on your life.
I firmly believe a good book can change your life. So in this podcast episode, I am going to reveal four authors that have had a profound effect on how I approach my business and my personal life. These thinkers have altered my outlook on the world and shifted my perspective - helping me to gain new insights and explore alternative paths. And, as a Brucie Bonus, I'll also reveal three books that have had a similar effect on a few of my clients.
These books can have a huge impact on you too, so sit back and enjoy.
In this second episode of my podcast series, I am going to reveal that technique so you can use it too.

When we agreed for my Grandfather to move in with us, I anticipated that we would probably encounter some issues. After all, that's expected when an elderly family member begins living with you - isn't it? In this episode, I'd like to shine a light on all of the clues that I missed. I also want to ask you an important question: Are you blinded by excessive stress and don't even know it? Listen on to find out. https://www.hillcoachingcompany.co.uk
