Throwback to 2020, one of my favorite episodes and one of the only episodes where we explore the power of belief and surrender in the HA recovery process.
In this episode Sarah and I explore our personal experiences with HA, disordered eating, diet culture and learning how to step away from our 'fit' identity to explore who we really are.
We dug deep into surrender and what it meant to us during HA recovery and now in our everyday lives. We also discuss finding the strength to continue through the toughest of times by having faith that these moments are happening 'for us' and not 'to us' , and that there is a lesson in every experience which is here to serve us.
Sarah was previously a triathlete, who is currently working as a Holistic Health and Body Image Coach; she is also a beautiful and inspiring soul.
I am sure you will know exactly what I mean as you listen to her speak throughout this episode.

How many times have you set out to do less exercise only to end up doing more than before??
This can come in the form of
step counts- reducing gym sessions only to max out on walks
reduce runs only increase gym sessions
reduce schedules training but end up booking in active catch-ups, hiking, rock climbing, walks
The way in which this can occur is endless.
In today's episode, I will explain how the sneaky 'voice' can persuade you to do more despite wanting to do less and most importantly how to prevent this from happening.

Fear of weight gain is often the biggest obstacle when recovering from an eating disorder and/or Hypothalamic Amenorrhea. The idea of deliberately gaining weight can feel cruel, unfair, wrong, insensitive, and morally corrupt. Often this way of viewing weight gain leads us to believe the risk of gaining weight isn’t worth the reward of being healthy. Im not going to lie there are some intense moments in this episode, especially when describing how the disordered self can present during the bad days of weight restoration. I think it's important to discuss and represent all experiences knowing that no matter how easy or difficult your personal experience is that the pursuit of living a healthy life is so worth it and no matter how misunderstood you may feel there is always someone ready to listen and help you through. Intuitive eating is another beautiful term that has been swept into the hands of diet culture and misrepresented by many on many social media platforms.
The consistent manipulation and misrepresentations of terms such as ‘intuitive eater’ or ‘intuitive eating’ can make it even more difficult for someone suffering from an eating disorder to be able to recover as what they are led to believe is ‘intuitive’ is another creative way of hiding a set of rules governing choices around food.
Today Jaqueline and I demystify what it really means to be an intuitive eater and how to make your way from an eating disorder to an intuitive eater.
I hope this episode serves you well, and the podcast continues to support you on your HA / ED recovery journey.

Anyway, so excited to have Kristin sharing her HA recovery journey. Kristen describes herself as a recovering perfectionist in the Chicago area who is hoping to become a Mother in 2023. I however know her as a kind-hearted soul, movement lover, and avid podcast listener. I am proud to have been a part of Kristin's recovery but more than anything I am so proud of her for keeping faith in the process and honoring what her body needed to rest. We talk about some really interesting areas of HA in this episode, 100% worth the listen (or repeat listen).

@erinkohara_ Joins us to talk about life after HA and how to navigate a 'non-HA recovery lifestyle'.It is interesting how we place so much time and energy to create the lifestyle to support HA recovery only to realise we are free to spread our wings and find other new ways to live, new activities to take part in, and new decisions to make on what we want from life. While it is a whole new and exciting experience it can also be a little spooky too. In this conversation, Erin and I drop some tips on how to embrace life after HA with confidence. The perfect way to complete our now three-part series on value systems! Today you will learn simple and practical techniques to apply, review and reframe the application of your value systems in everyday life. It's interesting to hear how the practice of applying and reflecting on the use of our value systems ties in so beautifully with commonly discussed topics as people-pleasing, perfectionism, eating disorders, harmony vs balance, and having the confidence to show up as your authentic self. I can't possibly do this episode justice by trying to describe what we cover, it really is a 'must listen' episode!

This is not just another HA recovery journey but instead a life audit and recreation. Jessica is from our HA community and is here to share how she recovered her cycle after many years of HA, was able to stop counting calories after 10 years of logging in an app, AND most importantly how she learned to break away from rules, expectations, external validations, and the powers of the ego by taking the sit to down (literally) and think about what she wanted, why she wanted it and the best means of achieving it.
Jessica’s biggest leaps in recovery came from a simple decision to try a new morning ritual for 30 days, knowing that if she loved it she would keep it and if she didn’t she’d go back to the way things were…. 30 days later Jessica was already transforming, little did she know this was the very beginning of something beautiful.

Body image is a person's perception of their physical self and the thoughts and feelings, positive, negative, or both. So when it comes to making a decision on body modifications such as breast implants, how do we know if we are making the right decisions for the right reasons?
Given our complex history with body image and body dysmorphia Elyse, and I thought it would great idea to open up the conversation on breast implants and in particular our experience with breast augmentation surgery.
Key points discussed:
thoughts and experiences which lead to our decision
what our experience was like pre and post-op
interesting similarities between our decisions and HA recovery journeys
after HA recovery and all of the lessons learned, do we regret the surgery?
things we question now, that we never did at the time

Eating disorders are a serious, complex, isolating, and an often-misunderstood mental illness. Eating disorders can not only cause the person to suffer extreme emotional turmoil and anguish but also physical health issues ranging from a loss of period, poor digestion, insomnia, heart attacks, organ failure, and in some extreme cases sometimes death. While on the surface an eating disorder might present itself as purely a food, or body image issue it is so much more than that. A lot of people suffering from eating disorders are struggling with:
Finding their identity – who are they outside of the behaviors they were once (possibly still are) praised for.
Coping strategies – feeling out of control in other areas of life and use controlling food as a meal to feel ‘safe’
People-pleasing – you like me with the disorder, how could you like me without it?
Being shunned – the feeling they will be shunned from their community or tribe of people if they were to change eating behaviors, gain weight or exercise differently. It is important to realise that this is a very real threat to the person suffering despite potential outsiders thinking it’s a ‘silly thing to think’
Other health conditions – some people experience extreme digestive disturbance which has led them to be fearful to eat because of what could happen. I could continue to list more but I think this is a good starting point to creating more awareness.
In this podcast, we not only discuss the delicate and complex nature of an eating disorder but also what the recovery journey can look like for those suffering. We also discuss the positive and negative influences of friends and family as well as weight restoration not being the ultimate sign of recovery. If you are currently struggling (or have in the past) with an eating disorder I hope by listening you realise that you are not alone, and that there are people out there who can help you through this difficult time.
If you are not struggling with an eating disorder, I thankyou for taking the time to read this post, listening to the podcast, and doing your best to understand the complex yet delicate nature of an eating disorder.
I look forward to many more powerful conversations with the wonderful Jacqueline Byrne. @wings_and_quill http://www.wingsandquill.com/ @jadee.cameon https://linktr.ee/jade.cameron

HA Recovery is so unique to the individual especially when it comes to whether or not you can continue training. Rebekkah shares with us how she went from using training as a tool to improve mental health to living a fast-paced fitness focus lifestyle which lead to HA. I particularly enjoyed learning about Rebekkahs experience with healing as she was able to remain working in the health and fitness industry, with the focus of calming her sympathetic nervous system down at every opportunity. Rebekka was also able to continue training but was very mindful as to when it was a good time to train and when it wasn't. Rather than seeing 'all in' as the only way to recover she took the opportunity to really dive in, evaluate the information available from leading researchers and evaluate her own body and mind on a daily basis to work out what was best for her recovery. Please keep in mind despite most of our desires to train and recover this isnt always an achievable outcome but it is still fantastic to share women who have been able too. I am confident you will enjoy listening to this episode as much as I loved recording it. Picking and choosing when to recover from HA is a bit like the decisions on how to remove a band-aid.
Sometimes, we will wait and wait until the water and constant movement from our skin and the friction from our clothes makes them go all slimy, and clumpy until there is literally no ‘stick’ left and the band-aid drops off. In HA recovery, this would be the woman who diets and trains until she literally cannot function anymore. This woman is always exhausted, always thinking about what to eat, when to eat, and if it's even worth it to eat. This woman will live this way until she literally wakes up and thinks to herself ‘I have nothing left; I cannot go on like this
Sometimes, we don’t wait too long to take off the band-aid but we do leave it for a few days to get worn down so there isn’t too much ‘sticky’ left but enough ‘sticky’ that you still will feel the pull of the band-aid coming off. In HA recovery, this is Quasi recovery. You know you need to recover but you are happy for recovery to take longer if it means you can keep as many current behaviors as possible. You will pick and choose what you are comfortable with knowing that you are still progressing towards your goal. It's comforting to know that you are doing ‘something’ but ‘not too much.
Sometimes, we look at the band-aid and release we don’t need it. We see how firm it is to our skin, we can tell it's going to hurt when we pull it off but we don’t care about the pain. We just want to get the job done and rip the band-aid off. In HA recovery, this is ‘All In’. You can see all the thoughts, behaviors, and actions which have caused your HA. You can see that it's going to take a lot of conscious effort, grit, and emotional discomfort to get the outcome you want but it’s all ok because you know you can do hard things. You know that this will be a temporary pain for a long-term gain. You set out your plan and you act on it each and every day until what was once hard becomes easy until what was once many conscious decisions becomes a new way of living, and until you go from no bleed to bleed.
Just like taking off a band-aid can happen in a different ways so can the path to HA recovery. We cant wait to talk to you about all things HA Recovery to have you ready to take on the best and most efficient recovery path.

Today episode is inspired by the fabulous Holly Dunn's recent blog titled: To Count or Not to Count – The Calorie Conundrum Exert: When it comes to recovering from hypothalamic amenorrhea (HA), relative energy deficiency in sport (RED-S) or a malnourishment disorder in the context of an energy deficit – it’s logical and potentially appropriate to consider using calorie counting as a method to restore a healthy energy balance.
But is counting calories ever truly appropriate or helpful and should you count calories when you’re looking to get your period back?
My aim in this article is to provide a review of the notion of calorie counting, including potential pitfalls and possible benefits in the context of HA recovery. It is not my intention to provide a definitive answer to the “calorie conundrum” for those looking to recover missing periods, but rather to provide you with knowledge and insights to enable you to decide what may work best for you.
https://hollydunn.co.uk/blog/calories
What is a calorie?
What are the pitfalls of counting calories?
Our energy requirements are not uniform or static
Human bodies are not laboratories
How we prepare and consume food makes a difference
Calories do not = pleasure
Are there any benefits to counting calories in HA recovery?

The ebook was created to help women recover from Hypothalamic Amenorrhea and Eating Disorders. It is filled with practical exercises and journal prompts to help women to dig deep into their emotions, discover their fears, their motivations, and their strength. It is also used to identify thoughts and behaviors (both rational and irrational).
As a recovered bulimic, and chronic dieter (6 years HA) I not only understand the mindset of someone with an eating disorder, but I have lived it. Every emotion I felt, every lesson I leant, every anxiety, fear and tear I shed fuelled the creation of the HA Recovery Ebook. Reading this testimonial was an overwhelming experience for me and that it why I want to share it with you. For a long time I have looked at my eating disorders as a blessing in disguise, reading this testimonial feels like yet another confirmation that my journey was for a reason greater than anything I could have ever imagined.

Kirsten McDaniel joins me today to share her personal journey with HA. Unlike the most common HA stories, Kirsten’s comes after having 3 children and occurred when trying to lose weight as a means to fall into the ‘healthy weight’ category on the BMI chart. While we know not to trust the BMI chart I am trying to indicate the Kirstens HA occurred despite being what the medical world deems a ‘healthy weight’.
One thing which remains consistent with many stories of HA is Kirsten was under-eating and exercising a lot. Kirsten shares all of her ups and downs including how what started as ‘healthy choices’ lead to a world of disordered eating habits and exercise addiction.
It is interesting to learn how ‘perfect’ Kirsten’s cycles had been for most of her life and how prior to HA she was noticing changes to her cycle but didn’t know how to interpret the information. I hope this episode makes you feel like you are not alone if you are experiencing HA despite not being a low body weight. HA can affect anybody and you are not alone.

We hear so many HA stories caused by extreme dieting and overtraining but what happens when you don't fit in those categories. Is it still HA? I am so grateful to be sharing Tash's journey of HA and recovery as it is one of the less common scenarios but it highlights how unique our bodies are and how much our stress responses vary from woman to women. Tash was training what is considered a 'normal' amount of 3-4 sessions a week, was sitting at a 'normal' bodyweight, however, she was always on the go racing from one thing to the next and possessed disordered eating habits.
It wasn't until Tash learned to slow down and listen to her body that she was able to not only recover her period and restore balance in her life but also ignite her passion for helping women to regain their period back, improve their relationship to food, movement, and their body.
We cover so much in this episode including mindset shifts, breathwork, women's mental and physical shifts through recovery, defining health and so much more. You are going to love this episode.

The fabulous Nourished by Claudia is back to discuss our HA journeys and what we would do differently if we had the advantage of hindsight.
Please note everyone's journey is unique and I truly believe we go through these experiences to learn life lessons. While we can look back and discuss tweaks we would have made it would have directly affected our life lessons. While I hope our reflections are helpful keep in mind you cant do HA recovery incorrectly if your intention is to love, care for, and nourish your body and mind as best as possible.
By sharing our insights we aim to help you take bigger steps forward in your HA & ED recovery journey.
Did you listen to the end and hear our BIG news?

My period hype gal pal is back! You guessed it, the joyful and passionate Elyse @yourperiodpt joining us for another fabulous podcast.
Today we are discussing all things body changes; before during and after HA.
It is normal to recognise changes that occur to your body both internally and externally. But what happens when noticing these changes starts making you crazy? The noticeable changes might keep you awake each night, prevent you from going shopping, socialising, or even stopping you from recovering your period? Elyse and I have both been there so the info you will hear is SO relatable and our refined tips and tricks will help you get through it.
We talk about the urge to compare the shape of our bodies and the desire to change them. We both drop insights into our own sneaky comparison photos, weight loss thoughts, and our interpretation of what it all means? Are we normal? Are we 'addicted' to a look? Or are we in total control because we can recognise and assess these thoughts in a way that still honors our health rather than jeopardise it?
We also discuss the power of feeling sexy. Does it aid confidence and body acceptance?
It is a juicy talk you won't want to miss.

The journey to becoming a mother is as unique as a snowflake and today I have the privilege of sharing with you Sarah's pregnancy and birth story.
Sarah walks us through her 9 months of pregnancy and what it feels like when you don't have the 'glowy, healthy, fabulous' feeling most women talk about as well as the thoughts, planning, and events of her beautiful and inspiring home birth.
We both discuss our experience of "Matrescence"—coined by the anthropologist Dana Raphael—it is defined as the process of becoming a mother; used to describe the physical, psychological, and emotional changes people go through during the monumental transformation that is motherhood.
Our conversation shifts into a raw, open, and honest take on the struggles and triumphs of motherhood especially during a time of such isolation.
Joy, sadness, and education delicately dance throughout this episode.
I hope you love listening as much as Sarah and I love talking :) xx

Lots to extract from this episode, whether you are contemplating loosing weight, gaining weight or maintaining weight there is something here for you. I dive into the benefits of calories counting when used as an educational tool, comp prep tool, facing fear foods tool as well as how calorie counting can feed off perfectionism, take away the confidence to trust your hungers, and breed an unsustainable way of living.
Towards the end I talk about weight loss methods for the general population who are NOT experiencing HA , eating disorders, or other related health concerns. As mentioned in this episode your personal circumstance is unique and YOU need to identify what will make you life happier and healthier and act on those steps. While I am here to help and share my experiences and thoughts with you and I am not a Doctor and if you do need assistance you should ALWAYS seek the help of a qualified medical practitioner.

The wild world of IVF. Majority of us have heard of it but do you know what's involved?
In todays episode Alisha brings to the forefront what is involved in IVF treatments, how IVF treatments vary depending on the cause of infertility and also the differences in treatment depending on the country you are receiving them in. There is much to learn on how your mindset and willingness to be open about your experiences can make world of difference to the journey and how you manage any bumps in the road.
While all IVF stories are unique and involve a roller-coaster of emotions, I hope that by sharing podcasts such as this one we can create a place where women don't feel alone and also for family and friends to be better supports to those close to them embarking or in the midst of this journey.

I am very happy to be chatting with Koren; The Plant Based Coach who is an experienced personal trainer, nutrition coach and mother of two. Koren is a breath of fresh air when it comes to her tips on living and maintaining a healthy and active lifestyle, as well as why it is important to do so. In this episode Koren shares her experience with Meningitis, and how the antibiotic treatment led to a severe reaction known as Steven Johnson syndrome. While this reaction is rare, it can still have devastating effects on the body. This episode isn't to scare anyone away from antibiotics but instead instills the importance of taking care of your health. As a result of being in good health prior to falling ill, Koren was able to make a full recovery, one of which the Doctors say may not have been possible if her health had been compromised due to other health/lifestyle factors. We also touch base on some other important topics such as: Societies desire to label different diets and how this can sometimes lead to an unhealthy relationship with food Self love and embracing your body Confidence is beautiful Health at all sizes Language around children when it comes to food and body image Tips on leading a healthy lifestyle And much more.... I really hope you enjoy this episode and learn something new or it encourages you to open your mind up to new ideas and concepts. If you would like to connect you can find me on instagram: @jade.zsarik or Koran at @theplantbasedcoach. Thankyou for tuning in and I will see you in the next episode :)

What a beautiful chat with the kind hearted Amy Hazel Price. In todays episode Amy shares her journey of 10 years Hypothalamic Amenorrhea, and approximately 16 years in and out of an eating disorder both of which she has been able to overcome leading her to not only a happier and healthier life but also to naturally falling pregnant (how exciting!!). If you are currently in the considering or in the middle of recovery I am confident you will find inspiration, hope and the motivation to pursue your health goals here. If not, you will get an insight in to the mind of someone dealing with HA and/or eating disorders and the common themes associated with them such as stress, feeling lost, and being out of control.
Amy also discusses the support systems she had in place throughout her journey and how they helped her through.
Everyone's recovery journey is different but the outcome is consistent; recovery is hard but WORTH it! I hope you enjoy this episode, please subscribe and share with someone who would enjoy it. Want to connect? You can find me on instagram @jade.zsarik and Amy @amyhazel92

Rebecca is a senior Pelvic Floor Physiotherapist who works in both the private and public sector. She has been working in Pregnancy and Pelvic Floor Physiotherapy since 2008. She has completed a Graduate Certificate in Sports Physiotherapy and is an experienced Clinical Pilates instructor (Level 1-4 DMA Clinical Pilates). She has also completed the Level 1 Upper Limb Lymphoedema Course and has been treating women with breast cancer for over 5 years. There is much to learn in this episode and you may even find yourself reaching for a pen and paper to take down some notes. We covered some very common questions and misconceptions of the pelvic floor muscles such as: What is your pelvic floor? What is a pelvic floor physio therapist? Can your pelvic floor be 'too strong'? Symptoms of pelvic floor dysfunction and when to seek help? How to activate your pelvic floor. Pilates - do you need to be activating your pelvic floor all the time or is it unique to the individual? Guidelines when returning to exercise postpartum and so much more...
I hope you enjoy this episode and learn something new. Please share this episode and help us spread the word that while symptoms of pelvic floor dysfunction are common they are not normal and can often be treated. https://www.mppp.com.au/rebecca-liberatore @melb_pelvicfloor_physio

You loved Kristen the first time and now she is back. We often hear the success stories of going 'All In' but what happens when it doesn't work out as expected or our mental health takes a turn for the worse? Kristen is brave enough to share with us how her mental health took a negative turn and how she has reclaimed it by digging deep and realising what she wants to achieve in life and going for it.
We also touch on a new HA recovery resource by DR Stacy Sims (her book ROAR is amazing), as well as social media influences, how children can inspire us to be our most authentic selves, stepping away from judgement, life lessons and so much more. I also mention DR Marissa Peer whos book and Youtube videos are fabulous and played a huge part in my recovery.
We mentioned freezing eggs and IVF at the end of the episode, if you have any information for Kristen please DM her on instagram @_kri5ten_

Prepare your favorite beverage, and join in on a chat with the girls. In this episode Kristen and I get a little passionate about the different judgements and assumptions which are often made on peoples nutritional choices and weight fluctuations. Are we trying to hard to categorise and label nutrition and body size or are we simply unwilling to see that our bodies and minds are constantly changing and therefore what fuels us does too?

This is for the days when you need strength , you need permission and you need hope. Recovering from an eating disorder, hypothalamic amenorrhoea or excercise addiction could be the most difficult thing you have ever faced. Thinking about it, living it, trying to battle it challenges your mind, your lifestyle , and your identity. Its hard I know, I have been there and it's sucks, but guess what you are braver and stronger than anyone of these conditions.

I am so excited about todays episode; Rebecca shares her personal experience with HA, over exercise, binging and anxiety as well as a positive and inspiring insight into her happy, healthy and balanced lifestyle now. What I love most about this journey is it isn't the typical 'I have HA, I must recover, I will go all in' kind of journey. Instead its almost like Rebeccas body forced her into recovery when she started binging and gaining weight as well as sustaining injuries which prevented excessive amounts of cardio/training. We dig deep on distorted eating behaviors and thoughts and lead into how empowering it is to be free from excessive exercise regimes and strict diets. You can find Rebecca on instagram @rebecccccca (its 6 c's in case you were wondering :p) @jade.zsarik and the newly created @itsamindgame_podcast . As always thankyou for listening, please like and share with others who will benefit from this episode.

6 Years of Hypothalamic Amenorrhea, how it started, how it ended and the journey of eating disorders in between. I should note for the first 5 years I was training 2-4 hours (medium to high intensity) a day the 6th year was 1 - 2 hours (low - medium intensity). When I went 'all in' strictly low intensity 1 - 1.5 hours walking or yoga. In later episodes I will discuss in depth how I recovered from HA, ED's and how my life is now with a baby 💕.
