Secrets for an Awesome Life: Recent Episodes

Joey Mascio

Have you ever seen someone completely enjoying life? Living to their fullest, not brought down by anyone or anything, totally having their stuff together? It's almost like they know secrets you don't.

This show is about those secrets.

Don't worry. Not very many people know these secrets. Or if they do, they don't apply them. These secrets are skills and mindsets not taught in any college or high school course. We may have heard of them, but no one taught us how to actually apply them to our lives. Which is a shame, because when you apply them, your life becomes more awesome.

That's why I created this podcast, for young adults who are looking to up the awesome level in their lives.

I am Joey Mascio and I’m a Teen & Young Adult Life Coach. I was certified at the Life Coach School where I was trained by Master Life Coach Brooke Castillo. I've also gone through Jody Moore's Advanced Certification. I take the strategies and tools I’ve learned from these two powerful women, and lots of my own, and adapt them for teenagers and young adults. I am also a middle school teacher and counselor, a proud father of three, and a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

This was one of my favorite episodes from a few years ago. The idea that there is an elixir, or formula, that teens can use to become a type of "Super" man has always fascinated me. About 100 years ago someone figured out what it was. Spoiler alert: it's owning your own mind. If a teen can do that, then they will be unstoppable, a Super Man or Woman.

Summer is coming to an end and teens across the country are all mourning the loss of their "free time." But, teens might have said goodbye to their freedom long ago if they were missing responsibility. Free time isn't freedom FROM responsibility, it's actually freedom BECAUSE OF responsibility. I talk about two type of responsibility that teens need to have in order to truly be free. Without them, you're just in a different kind of prison.

Want to connect with important people? We all do! That's why we spend time following social media influencers, watching YouTube stars, and playing video games where the main character is the most important person in the story. But there is just one problem... we're connecting with the wrong people!! The real important people are the real life people right around us. Family, friends, peers, and others who need us to notice them. Let's stop spending so much time building fake connections and start spending more time building real, meaningful ones.

Doing something worthwhile is key to living a happy, successful, and fulfilled life. But teens often spend their time doing something worth-less. Something that wastes time. Wasting time isn't always bad, but when done too much it can lead teens to feeling down, disconnected, and always looking for distractions. Doing something worthwhile first can help avoid that.

A cross-posting of a guest appearance I did on Pivot Parenting with Heather Frazier.

"In today's episode, I chat with teen coach, Joey Mascio about how we can help our teens succeed. We talk about apathy, encouraging our kids, and heros vs. villains when it comes to our parental approach. Joey shares the four distinct arenas that our kids can conquer in their lives, headspace, emotions, relationships, objectives, and how we can best support them while they do it."

Why do we do what we do?? Sometimes it's for pleasure, sometimes it's for power, but the best times are when it's for something meaningful. Knowing this allows us to choose to find meaningful meaning and purpose and reason in the things that we do. It helps us get motivated, get through tough times, and enjoy life more.

Teens, there is PLENTY of money out there for you to get. You just have to believe it's there for you to find. This is called having an abundant mindset. This week we continue the “Teenage Carol” story with Part Three: The Ghost of Teenage Present. Eben goes to visit some recent events in his life, to get a better look at what others’ true perception of him was - which is much different than what Eben had thought.

This brings us to today’s secret, we often assume what other people think of us. Often when we think they dislike us or something similar, it’s an untrue perception based on a few key events that we don’t actually have the full context of. If we truly knew the full story, it may change the way we saw them.

Part two of the story “A Teenage Carol”, where Eben gets brought back to events in his past to see how it affected the way he thought of himself - whether he remembered the event or not.

Ben Pugh joins us today to discuss how events in our past can consciously or subconsciously cause shifts in the way we think of ourselves years down the road. Sometimes these events are much more insignificant than we remember because the way we interpreted at the time caused us to blow it out of proportion in our heads - something that sticks to us, sometimes our entire life.

We all deal with anxiety in one way or another. Using humor as a shield against bullying is very effective! Penn State saw that using humor when being bullied is the 3rd best way in preventing further bullying. The best way to be able to use humor is loving who you are and accepting the parts of you, you might not like - but not believing any part of you is actually bad. Being you is the best thing ever, and once you know that, it makes using humor that much more easy and effective.

Penn State did a study that looked at different tactics used against bullies. Some of these were more effective than others, some were even harmful and ended up with more bullying in the end. The tactics that weren’t very helpful were usually focused on the bully and changing, and trying to control their behavior.

What tactics specifically tend to be the most effective? We take a look at Penn State’s list to see what showed to work the most.

Bullies rarely ever see themselves, or their actions as being a bully. They often don’t even realize what they are doing is negatively impacting someone. What if the bully actually needs help? Sometimes all it takes is for the bully to realize they are, in fact, a bully. Bullies don’t want to think of themselves as a bully, and sometimes that is all it takes to change a bully’s ways.

Being bullied sucks, it really does. It’s hard to find a way to deal with it - but I learned a way to counter the things bullies would say about me. I learned to own it. This didn’t stop them from saying it, but it stopped it from having a major negative impact on the way I felt and thought about myself. I accepted it, but what made this effective was that I also accepted myself and I still loved myself for who I was. Being called moon head wasn’t fun, but it never caused me to feel less than, it never made me hate the size of my head.

Bullies will make fun of people for anything. The things we enjoy, the way we look, the way we act, these are all things a bully might pick on someone for. If we can own it, and accept ourselves we give people permission to accept who we are.

October is National Bullying Prevention Month, this means we will be diving into the secrets that will help all of us become Bully Proof.

The war against bullying is a very positive movement. There are a lot of things being done - but at the same time, it doesn’t feel like it’s quite hitting the mark. The message towards bullies to.. stop bullying is not very effective - usually the bully doesn’t even consider what they are doing to be bullying!

And then there is the message for bi-standards to stand up and speak out against the bully. This is also very positive, but what happens if the bi-standard is not there?

The problem with both of these messages is that they rely on other parties to do something, it does not allow you as an individual to have control of the situation. Today we talk about the 3rd message, how to empower yourself with confidence and make yourself become Bully Proof.

Nobody fits in perfectly all the time. Being able to adapt to each situation is a life skill that will take you far. It will allow you to assess different social situations and get a sense of what is needed from you. This doesn’t mean not being yourself, but instead being authentically adaptable. This means knowing what personal values you have and knowing when and how to apply them, and being secure in who you are as a person. But that doesn’t mean fitting in 100% of the time, it means knowing when we can or can’t fit in - that’s being adaptable. When we can’t adapt, we get left behind.

Life is rarely a clear cut story with all the details neatly filled in. Our brains naturally bridge the gaps of what isn't clear with narrative about other people's motives, our position in the world, and what the future will be. Do you view yourself as the hero or the sidekick in your life? If you're not sure, consider the following:

Heroes have the power to change their fate. Sidekicks do not.

A hero knowns that every failure or setback will eventually lead to their victory. Sidekicks do not.

Heroes save themselves. Sidekicks need to be saved by someone else.

Heroes put themselves front and center in their lives. Sidekicks take the back seat to others.
