Sultans of Swing (Dire Straits) - A 70s Hit
Sultans of Swing is a 1978 song by the British rock band Dire Straits, released on their debut album Dire Straits and written by the band's frontman Mark Knopfler. The song reached the top 10 in both the UK and the U.S., reaching No. 8 on the UK Singles Chart and No. 4 on the Billboard Hot 100 and helped drive sales of the album, which also became a hit.
Mark Knopfler has a very laid back sense of singing. By no means is his vocal ability top notch but he uses such confidence that it really sets the perfect mood for his songs. I tried to mimic his unique singing style and had a lot of fun trying.

Mark Knopfler hat eine sehr lässige Art zu singen. Seine stimmlichen Fähigkeiten sind keineswegs erstklassig, aber er setzt sie so souverän ein, dass sie wirklich die perfekte Stimmung für seine Songs erzeugen. Ich habe versucht, seinen einzigartigen Gesangsstil zu imitieren und hatte eine Menge Spaß dabei.

"Lady in Black" is a song by the rock band Uriah Heep. It is the fourth track of their 1971 album Salisbury.
The song is credited to Ken Hensley, the keyboard player of the band. It tells the story of a man wandering through war-torn darkness and encountering a goddess-like entity who consoles him. It is often praised, by fans and critics alike, as Hensley's most poetic work to date.
I sang this song the day Ken Hensley died. Since I started playing the guitar, this song has accompanied me over and over again in my life, now for over 50 years. Thank you, Ken Hensley.

Lady In Black (Uriah Heep) - Ein Coversong aus den 70ern
"Lady in Black" ist ein Lied der Rockband Uriah Heep. Es ist der vierte Titel ihres Albums Salisbury von 1971.
Das Lied ist Ken Hensley, dem Keyboarder der Band, zu verdanken. Es erzählt die Geschichte eines Mannes, der durch die vom Krieg zerrissene Dunkelheit wandert und einem götterähnlichen Wesen begegnet, das ihn tröstet. Es wird von Fans und Kritikern gleichermaßen oft als Hensleys bisher poetischstes Werk gepriesen.
Ich habe diesen Song am Todestag von Ken Hensley eingesungen. Seitdem ich Gitarre spiele, begleitet mich dieser Song immer wieder im Leben, mittlerweile seit über 50 Jahren. Danke, Ken Hensley.

Lord Is It Mine (Supertramp) - A saxophone and vocal cover song from the 70s
"Lord Is It Mine" is a song by the English rock band Supertramp. The song was released as the lead single from their sixth studio album, Breakfast in America (1979), in March 1979 by A&M Records. At one of his concerts Roger Hodgson said that this is a very special song because it comes from the bottom of the heart and touches a lot of people. Although the song was not released as a single, it is one of the favorites on this exceptional album for many fans.
In my eyes this song is one of the most beautiful ballads in pop music history - sad and melancholic, but not depressive. Besides all vocal parts I also played the saxophone in the back part of the song on the soprano saxophone. The piano was played by Maurizio Troiani and his track from YouTube is used with his permission.

"Lord Is It Mine" ist ein Song der englischen Rockband Supertramp. Der Song wurde als Hauptsingle ihres sechsten Studioalbums "Breakfast in America" im März 1979 von A&M Records veröffentlicht. Auf einem seiner Konzerte sagte Roger Hodgson, dass dies ein ganz besonderer Song sei, weil er von tiefstem Herzen komme und sehr viele Leute berührt. Obwohl der Song nciht als Single erschien, zählt er für viele Fans zu den Favoriten auf deisem Ausnahmealbum.
Dieser Song ist in meinen Augen eine der schönsten Balladen der Popmusik-Geschichte - traurig-melancholisch, aber nicht depressiv. Neben allen Vokalstimmen habe ich bei diesem Song auch das Saxophon im hinteren Teil des Songs auf dem Sopransaxophon eingespielt. Das Klavier wurde von Maurizio Troiani gespielt und sein Track von YouTube wird mit seiner Erlaubnis verwendet.

"Saturday in the Park" is a song written by Robert Lamm and recorded by the group Chicago for their 1972 album Chicago V. It was very successful upon release, reaching ?No.?3 on the Billboard Hot 100, becoming the band's highest-charting single at the time, helping lift the album to ?No.?1. Billboard ranked it as the No. 76 song for 1972. The single was certified Gold by the RIAA, selling over 1,000,000 units in the U.S. alone.
I particularly like this song from Chicago, because it dates back to before Chicago had its number one hits with the romantic ballads. I sang the main and all the backing vocals again. Fortunately, the original song was sung by Robert Lamm and not by Peter Cetera, who had a higher pitch.

Dieser Song von Chicago gefällt mir besonders gut, da er noch aus der Zeit stammt, bevor Chicago mit den romantischen Balladen ihre Nummer-1-Hits hatte. Ich habe wieder die Haupt- und alle Nebenstimmen gesungen. Zum Glück wurde der Song im Original von Robert Lamm und nicht von Peter Cetera gesungen, der eine erheblich höhere Tonlage hätte.

"Ventura Highway" is a 1972 song by the band America from their album Homecoming. The song contains the phrase "purple rain," later the title of a 1984 song, album, and film from the artist Prince. Although it is not known if there is actually any connection, both Mikel Toombs of The San Diego Union and Bob Kostanczuk of the Post-Tribune have written that Prince got the title directly from "Ventura Highway". The song went to number 8 on the Billboard Top 40 Pop Charts for America, spending nine weeks on the charts after debuting on November 4, 1972.
I sang this song immediately after my vacation in the USA, where I heard this song several times on the radio. I sang the lead vocals as well as both backing vocals. In the choruses, all vocal tracks are sung three times and mixed together to create this special sound - a recording technique once invented by the Beatles.

America ist eine britisch-amerikanische Folk-Rock-Band, die Anfang der 1970er Jahre kommerziell am erfolgreichsten war. Zu ihren bekanntesten Hits zählen insbesondere A Horse With No Name und The Last Unicorn. Homecoming ist das zweite Album der Band America und wurde 1972 veröffentlicht. Das Stück Ventura Highway, auf dessen bekanntem Riff auch Janet Jacksons Hit Someone to Call My Lover beruht, wurde zu einem der größten Erfolge der Band, die 1972 mit dem Grammy als Best New Artist ausgezeichnet wurde. Das Album erreichte Platz 9 der Billboard-Charts.
Ich habe diesen Song unmittelbar nach meinem Amerika-Urlaub eingesungen, bei dem ich dieses Lied mehrfach im Autoradio gehört habe. Ich habe die Haupt und die beiden Chorstimmen eingesungen. In den Refrains sind alle Stimmen jeweils dreifach eingesungen und entsprechend gemixed, um diesen Sound zu erzeugen - eine Produktionstechnik, die übrigens damals von den Beatles erfunden wurde.

Short People (Randy Newman) - A cover song from the 70s
"Short People" is a song by Randy Newman from his 1977 album, Little Criminals. The verses and chorus are lyrically constructed as a prejudiced attack on short people. In contrast, the bridge states that "short people are just the same as you and I." Newman interprets the song to be about "prejudice" as was widely thought, but added that it was "about a lunatic". As with many of his songs such as "Rednecks", Newman wrote the song from the point of view of a biased narrator. Although Newman had never charted a single before, "Short People" soon gained attention as a novelty song. The song consequently became a major hit on radio peaking at No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100. It became a Gold record.
In this cover song I sang all lead and backing vocals. I really started liking Randy Newman and maybe there will be more songs of him later on.

Short People (Randy Newman) - Ein Coversong aus den 70ern
"Short People" ist ein Song von Randy Newman aus seinem 1977er Album "Little Criminals". Die Strophen und Refrains sind vom Text her ein mit Vorurteilen gespickter Angriff auf kleinwüchsige Menschen. Im Kontrast dazu stehen die Überleitungen, in denen es heißt "Kleinwüchsige Menschen sind genauso wie Du und ich." Newman, wie auch viele andere, interpretiert das Thema seines Song als gegen Vorurteile gerichtet und fügte noch hinzu, dass es letztlich auch um "einen Verrückten" gehe. Wie in vielen seiner Songs (z.B. "Rednecks") schrieb Newman diesen Song aus einer sehr voreingenommenen Erzählerperspektive. Obwohl Newman vorher noch nie mit einem Song in den Charts war, wurde "Short People" sehr bald als neuartig wahrgenommen. Der s´Song wurde dadurch ein großer Hit im Radio und kletterte auf Platz 2 der Billboard Hot 100. Er erhielt eine Auszeichnung in Gold.
In diesem Coversong habe ich wieder alle Haupt- und Backgroundstimmen gesungen. Dabei habe ich angefangen, Randy Newman richtig gut zu finden und so wird es in Zukunft vielleicht den einen oder anderen weiteren Song von ihm geben.

Baker Street (Gerry Rafferty) – A saxophone and vocal cover song
"Baker Street" is a song written and recorded by Scottish singer-songwriter Gerry Rafferty. Released as a single in 1978, it reached #1 in Cash Box and #2 in Billboard – where it held for six weeks. Additionally, it hit #1 in Canada, #3 in the United Kingdom, #1 in Australia and top 10 in the Netherlands. Rafferty received the 1978 Ivor Novello award for Best Song Musically and Lyrically. The arrangement is known for its haunting saxophone riff played by Raphael Ravenscroft.
This song is number 100 and as such my jubilee song for “Music for my friends”. In this song I sang the lead vocals and played this marvelous sax themes on my alto saxophone (HD brand by Harald Dallhammer). Vocal and sax work was much more difficult than expected, I needed roughly 50 takes to get the sax result presented here.

„Baker Street“ ist ein Rocksong von Gerry Rafferty aus dem Jahr 1978. Das markante Saxophonsolo, die Hookline des Stückes, spielte im Original Raphael Ravenscroft. Der Song erschien auf Raffertys Album City to City und wurde in einer knapp zwei Minuten kürzeren und damit radiotauglicheren Version auch als Single ausgekoppelt. Raffertys Originalversion erreichte in den USA Platz 2 der Billboard Hot 100 sowie Platz 3 der britischen und der deutschen Singlecharts. In Australien belegte der Titel Platz eins der Hitparade.
Dieser Song ist mit der Nummer 100 der Jubiläumssong von „Music for my friends“. In diesem Song habe ich neben dem Hauptgesang auch das markante Saxophon-Thema mit dem Alt-Saxophon (Marke HD – Harald Dallhammer) eingespielt. Sowohl Gesang wie die Saxophon-Teile waren schwieriger als gedacht, in Summe waren es bestimmt fünfzig Anläufe beim Sax-Thema, bis dieses Ergebnis vorlag.

Rebel Rebel (David Bowie) - My personal tribute to a great musician
"Rebel Rebel" is a song by David Bowie, released in 1974 as a single and on the album Diamond Dogs. Cited as his most-covered track, it was effectively Bowie's farewell to the glam rock movement that he had helped pioneer. The song is notable for its gender-bending lyrics ("You got your mother in a whirl / She's not sure if you're a boy or a girl") as well as its distinctive riff, which rock journalist Kris Needs has described as "a classic stick-in-the-head like the Stones' 'Satisfaction'". Bowie himself later said, "It's a fabulous riff! Just fabulous! When I stumbled onto it, it was 'Oh, thank you!'"
In this cover song I sang lead and backing vocals and recorded parts of this song the very day, David Bowie died. Thanks, David, for your wonderful music.
Rebel Rebel (David Bowie) - Meine persönliche Widmung an einen großartigen Musiker
"Rebell Rebel" ist ein Song von David Bowie, der 1974 als Single und auf dem Album Diamond Dogs veröffentlicht wurde. Er zählt zu seinen meist gecoverten Songs und er war sein Abschied aus der Glamrock-Szene, die er als Pionier mit erschaffen hatte. Der Song ist bekannt für seinen Text, der sich mit Geschlechtsveränderung beschäftigt ("You got your mother in a whirl / She's not sure if you're a boy or a girl") und für das extrem markante Gitarren-Thema, das der Rock-Journalist Kris Needs wie folgt beschrieben hat "Ein typisches Ohrwurm-Riff wie das Rolling Stones-Thema von 'Satisfaction'".
