RV Travel StudyThe RVIA recently reported on a study conducted by GoRVing, the RVIA, and CBRE Hotels Advisory Group, which found considerable savings for those traveling by RV compared to other types of travel. The article is on the RVIA website. As a researcher, I would like to read the study, but it is only available to RVIA members. Nonetheless, there were interesting findings reported in the article.

What I Liked About This StudyIt compared vacations for two groups. One was a group of 4 people, and the other was a group of 2. I think this is great because I typically see a family on an RV vacation or couples. Having these predominant groups in the study helps them compare an RV vacation with a flying or car road trip vacation.

The study used nine vacation destinations over various lengths of vacation. Using popular vacation destinations makes the study results more practical for those using the study to make decisions. If the study used destinations that were not vacation destinations, the study would be useless because prices are typically more expensive in popular vacation destinations.

Another thing I liked was that they factored in first-class airline tickets when comparing airline travel to travel in a luxury class A. Although not all luxury class A owners travel first class, the point of doing this was that those traveling in a luxury motorhome probably do not buy basic economy airline tickets when they travel. They are also probably staying in higher-end hotels and renting nicer cars than those of us traveling in an inexpensive travel trailer. Not necessarily a rule, but it’s perhaps more common than not.

The data showed savings of an average of 60% for a family of four and 46% for two people. On the surface, this looks like a decent savings. The other thing the article mentions is flexibility. When traveling by RV, it is possible to change routes and your time for travel more so than if you were flying.

What Was Left OutFor instance, the article mentions that the study analyzes the major costs associated with travel but does not indicate it factored in the cost of the RV, ownership maintenance costs, and insurance. With a foldable travel trailer, these costs may be negligible in the overall cost, but with a Super C or Diesel Class A, the costs will definitely affect the overall cost of a vacation. The question becomes how to factor those costs into individual vacations. It would depend on how frequently owners used the RV.

If the study does factor in the cost of the RV, the second concern I have is that a class A is not a class A is not a class A. What do I mean by that? You can get a class A motorhome for 100,000, 500,000, or 1 million dollars. There are wide variations in prices within each class of RV. Again, that would affect the cost of an RV vacation.

Final ThoughtsEven factoring in these costs, I will assume an RV vacation can be less expensive than flying, renting a car, and staying in hotels. You can usually cook at your RV and bring food and supplies purchased elsewhere that are cheaper than you would find in a vacation destination, likely lowering your overall costs. It is hard to believe it would be a 40-60 percent savings. I did not get into RVing for the savings. It was the lifestyle that appealed to me, which I believe is true for many RV owners.

Long Weekend working the Overland ExpoI just returned from the Overland Expo MTN West. Belle and I dry camped for five days and thought now would be the perfect time for an update on our RV power system expansion that we did six months ago. I just used these batteries exactly how I envisioned over this long weekend, and that is to protect Belle from the heat when I am away from the RV.

I worked the Winnebago booth at the expo on Friday & Saturday. The show hours are a bit long, from 8 am to 5 pm, so that is a long time for Belle to be alone in the RV while not being plugged in. Of course, I did stop in and check on her throughout the day. The Battle Born batteries did precisely what we needed them to do. They ran the AC the whole day while I was gone.

It was warm at this show but not excessively hot. I think the hottest day was 85 degrees, which is plenty hot for an RV. In fact, without the A/C on our RV, it would quickly get over 100 degrees inside.

Our RV Power SystemA quick reminder on what our power system consists of. We have over 1010 amp hours of battery power, a 3,000-watt inverter, and 1300 watts of solar. During the five days, I ran our generator for 2 hours to help top off the batteries. We were not getting much sun on Friday & Saturday, and I wanted to play it safe and ensure the batteries had enough juice for Belle. I was being cautious, as I turned on the generator when the batteries reached 50% charge. When I left on Monday morning, we had 75% left from the sun being out on Sunday. If I had not had Belle with me on this trip, I would have easily gone the five days without using the generator. Again, I think I was overly cautious about her being in the RV alone.
I was also able to monitor the temperatures in the RV using our Waggle Pet Monitor, so even though she was alone in the RV, the temps were still being watched by the Waggle Monitor.

Other Ways We Use the RV Power SystemBesides boondocking and dry camping, we have also found that we like using the battery system and AC while traveling. I will often use our rooftop AC rather than using our dash AC. This gives our engine a bit more power while driving while at the same time saving some miles per gallon. It’s not enough to shout about, but I have noticed a slight increase in our range per tank fill-up. Also, it is nice to have the entire RV cool when we arrive at a campsite instead of waiting for the RV to cool down after we park and plug in.

Changes to the RV Power SystemHaving Arizona as our home base, we noticed cooling issues with our inverter. We called Jordan from Echo One Adventures and let him know that our inverter was getting hot. Being the upstanding guy and company he is, he asked us to return to Albuquerque. He installed extra fans under our bed and vented them into our cargo bays. He did this at no additional cost and felt it was his responsibility to make us as happy as possible. Since the addition of the vent fans, everything has been perfect. If you are looking into building a system as we did in a motorhome, remember that motorized RVs become much warmer than towables because of all the drive equipment. We have a temp sensor under our stairwell, and when we are driving, it is not uncommon for those temperatures to reach 130 degrees in the summer. I am reasonably confident that our temperature issue would not have been an issue if we were in a towable RV.

I was recently invited to Winnebago to test their new Driver Confidence Package. This collection of features will soon be available on all Class A gas motorhomes from Winnebago. This package includes intelligent adaptive cruise, pre-collision with active braking support, lane-keeping assist, electronic stability control, traction control, hill start assist, auto high beams, and manual shift with range indication. All these systems combined make up the new Driver Confidence Package and are intended to make you feel more comfortable driving a large RV.

Learning about the Driver Confidence PackageThe day began with me heading to the Winnebago facility and meeting John Millis, the Product Manager for all the Winnebago Class A gas motorhomes and diesel pushers. John went over the menus of the new package, which are all controlled by the keypad on the steering wheel. I was pleased to see that you could turn some systems on and off and adjust the sensitivity for some of them as well. I liked the amount of control over features to make them more or less sensitive. After all, not everyone likes new tech, and this confidence package will now be standard in all of Winnebago’s Class A gas RV’s.

New Engine, Chassis and Suspension UpgradesOur test vehicle was a 2023 Winnebago Adventurer 36Z, so it has the new Ford F53 Chassis with a 7.3 Liter V8 Engine. This engine replaced the one I have in my Winnebago Vista, a 6.8 Liter V10. The advantage of the new engine is it can put out more torque at a low RPM. It also has more horsepower than the previous V10 engine. This was something that I could feel in the test drive right away during acceleration. It was quicker and quieter while getting up to speed. Our test vehicle also had Sumo Springs and a Safe T Plus bar, which can now all be added on from the Winnebago factory. We were in a 30th Anniversary Adventurer with the Safe T Plus bar and Sumo Springs standard.

The Test DriveMark Lafferty joined us during the test drive and drove a Winnebago Solis, a Class B van. The purpose of this vehicle was that Mark would drive in front of us and use the Solis to trigger some of the systems in the Adventurer. So, with walkie-talkies in hand to communicate with Mark, we were off! We set the intelligent adaptive cruise. With Mark in front of us, he would slow down to see if the Adventurer would recognize the speed change and match the speed of the Solis. It did. Then Mark sped up. The Adventurer again matched his speed until we reached the set speed of 60 mph. The system worked very well. I felt just this one addition would make the overall driving experience more pleasant and relaxing as now all I was doing was steering.

Pre-Collision BrakingWe also wanted to test pre-collision with active braking support, so we had Mark slow down to 5 mph. The Adventurer quickly realized this, pre-charged the brakes, and started applying them, giving me plenty of time to step in and stop the RV before driving into the back of the Solis. Winnebago either had a lot of faith in me or the new system, maybe a little bit of both. One thing of note is that the Adventurer will not come to a complete stop on its own. You do need to step in and stop it. The system is designed to alert and start breaking, giving you time to react and stop the vehicle completely.

Hill Start AssistAnother feature that I thought was nice was the hill start assist. Most of my RV driving is done while flat-towing a vehicle. I thought this feature would be nice when starting on a hill since rolling backward with a flat tow is bad. It can bind up a tow bar. I found the manual shifting to be a nice feature as well. With this, you could put the RV in a lower gear before hitting an incline instead of waiting for the automatic transmission to figure out that it needed to downshift after you were already into a climb. I think this will significantly improve uphill climbs. I tested this, but the test was performed in Iowa, where there are no significant grade changes to fully get a feel for how the manual shift would work on a hill climb, but it did work great on flat ground.

Lane AssistOne of the systems that I would probably find myself turning off is the lane assist, but like I said earlier, that is the nice thing about this package, you can turn off what you don’t want to use. I adjusted the sensitivity of the lane assist to low. I still felt it alerted me of lane departures too early and often. Remember that the Class A RV is a large vehicle that takes up the entire lane. It doesn’t take much to drift a smidge outside your line, especially on a windy day. Maybe it’s something I would need more time using to see if I would like it. If it senses you often going out of the lane, it displays a coffee cup, suggesting it’s break time. This is a nice feature.

I could not test the auto high beams because the test was done during the day. My wife’s Ford has this feature in her car, and I like how it works. You can turn the high beams on, and when the car sees another set of lights, either headlights or taillights, it turns the high beams off until the vehicle passes. It is quick to react.

My Thoughts on the Driver Confidence PackageOverall, I enjoyed my test drive. I thought all these systems combined worked well and never felt intrusive. I think it made the overall driving experience very pleasant. As I drove, I felt very relaxed behind the wheel while conversing with John Millis. The best way to describe the system is that it is always paying attention and unable to be distracted.

I look forward to having these features in our next Winnebago. I’m not sure when that will be, but I just reached 120,000 miles on our Vista. It may be soon!

I have been a member of Passport America for over a year, and I thought it would be an excellent time to review the program. So let’s start with what Passport America is and is not. First, Passport America does not own any campgrounds, but several campgrounds partner with them to offer 50% off a campsite stay. In fact, there are now over one thousand participating campgrounds in the Passport America lineup.

Why Join Passport AmericaSabrina and I have heard about Passport America for several years, but we didn’t join until we had the president of Passport America, Boomer Simmons, on the podcast. The reason for the delay is we thought the Passport America membership was much more expensive than it is, so we never looked into it. That was undoubtedly our mistake. Membership starts as low as $44. Sabrina and I paid even less than that because we signed up using a special at the FMCA convention.

So after a year, was it worth the $44? I would say definitely yes. The membership paid for itself on its first use, and within the first six months, we signed up for a lifetime membership because they were doing a 30th-anniversary rate. We paid under $300 and figured it would pay for itself within two years, if not sooner.

Booking TipsThe membership has been great, but there are things to pay attention to when booking a stay. First, you will want to check for reviews on the campground you are staying at. As I mentioned earlier, they do not own any of these campgrounds, so they are all independent of one another and can vary on how nice they are. After using the service, I can say we have not stayed at a bad park, but we have avoided some based on Google reviews.

Second, use the Passport America app. It has a lot of helpful info for when it comes time to book your stay. The most crucial bit of information you will want is Campground Notes. Choose the campground you want to stay at from the app, then scroll down to Campground Notes. The notes will let you know if there are any blackout dates. You will also find out if there is a limit on how many nights the discount is good for. Sabrina and I just stayed at a campground last week that only allowed one night of the discount. Because of the app, we knew this in advance and were not surprised by it. I would say most campgrounds typically give you a discount for at least three nights. Some have no limits, but knowing all of this before you book is good.

Once you find the campground you want to stay at, I usually call them to make the reservation and let them know I will use my Passport America pass. They typically ask for our membership number and expiration date on the card, which we now don’t have because we are lifetime members.

Some of our favorite campgrounds are now part of the Passport America program, like Coronado Campground in Albuquerque, New Mexico.

Final Thoughts on Passport AmericaOverall, I believe the membership is worth it. Still, I would say the best thing to do before signing up is to see where you are traveling for the year and see if campgrounds are participating in areas that get good reviews. If so, you will get your money back quickly and save on future trips.

Ultimately, deciding whether or not to take out an RV loan will depend on a variety of factors, from your financial situation to the type of RV you’re interested in. It’s important to carefully evaluate both the benefits and drawbacks before making a decision.

Use a loan calculator to determine how much interest you are going to pay over the life of the loan. Paying interest can be painful and adds to the overall cost of the RV. Let’s look at an example. If you financed $75,000 of a new RV purchase over 15 years using an interest rate of 7%, the interest would be an additional $46,000. An interest rate of 7% is about the average as of the writing of this article. That additional cost in interest is over half the price of the RV. If you are willing to wait, saving and paying cash is the better option if that extra cost is too much. You can also look at shorter terms or really shop for the best interest rate to be found. Regularly Wash & Dry Your RVIf your RV could talk, it would say, “I feel dirty!” Let’s be honest. We all feel better after a good cleanup – and the same goes for your trusty RV companion. Regularly washing and drying the exterior will make it look pretty and prevent dirt, grime, and other unwanted build-ups that could cause damage in the long run. Plus, who doesn’t love the feeling of a fresh and sparkling-clean vehicle? So grab the hose and some soap, put on your favorite playlist, and get cleaning!

Sun’s Out, Get Your Wax OutWith the sun out, it’s the perfect opportunity to give your RV some TLC and keep its paint job looking fresh and glossy. Most RVs are kept outside and not indoors. The sun and other weather elements are harsh on paints and coating on RVs. Regular waxing every few months protects your RV’s paint from harmful UV rays and protects against dirt and grime. Who doesn’t want their home on wheels to look its best? So, grab a high-quality wax, put on some tunes, and give your RV paint the pampering it deserves. This is not an easy job, so take your time. It may take multiple days of work to wash and wax an RV if you are doing it yourself. Some companies can come to wash and wax your RV for you. They typically charge around $15 per foot to wash and wax an RV (motorhome, travel trailer, or fifth wheel). A typical wax will only provide 3-6 months of protection, so it must be waxed at least twice a year. Consider a sealant, ceramic coating, or paint protection film for extended protection.

Protective Sealants for RV PaintWant your car to sparkle like the day you drove it off the lot? Apply protective sealants to keep it looking like new! Not only will a fresh coat of sealant add shine and depth to your paint, but it will also protect against everyday wear and tear, like bird droppings and pollen. A quality sealant will offer protection for approximately 12 months if you care for your RV’s exterior. The key to a good sealant is ensuring the RV is clean, and the RV’s paint has been polished to remove swirls or imperfections. Today I am sharing my thoughts on the Camco Taste Pure Water Softener. This will be a two-part review, with the second part coming out in about six months after I have used the softener for some time. I recently purchased this water softener from Amazon for about $180. You might be like me and have never given your RV water much thought except for filtering it with blue or green inline filters. You may also wonder why bother trying to make the water softer or even what that means.

Why Soften Your WaterAfter purchasing a home base in Arizona, I can tell you that water softening is definitely on my mind. We have a home water softener that went on the fritz, and boy, could you tell something was up with our water. It became challenging to shower because the soap and water did not want to glide over our skin. You can describe the water as becoming rough. But, I could quickly fix our home water softener and get our water back to normal again.

Using a water softener is more than just a feeling you have. Some of the other benefits of using a water softener are:

Prevents build-up of minerals (scale) on the inside of pipes, fixtures, and water heaters,
Lengthens the life of some appliances,
Reduces or prevents mineral spots on glassware,
Prevents or reduces soap films and detergent curds in sinks, bathtubs, and washing machines.

Those first two benefits are why I wanted an RV water softener. But, unfortunately, the water here in Arizona is so full of minerals that I fear I am shortening the life of our water heater and possibly gumming up our plumbing over time.

Camco Taste Pure Water SoftenerSo, let’s talk about the Camco RV water softener. Most importantly, it is portable and has a built-in handle. It weighs 25 lbs and can be stored lying down or upright. In addition, it is 22 inches tall with a circular base measuring 9 inches across, so it is relatively small and easy to pack away.

It is also reasonably straightforward to use right out of the box. There is nothing to do except run water through it for about seven minutes for the first time using it, then you connect it to your RV and start using it. It comes with a four-foot hose that you can use to connect the camp fixture to it. I will run a filter at that point between the spigot and the softener, as the softener is not a replacement for your water filters.

Water Softener Final ThoughtsDoes it work? Have we noticed any difference with our water since using the water softener? The answer to both of these questions is yes, and we know that it came with test strips to ensure that everything is working correctly. We tested the water coming out of the spigot before the softener. The test strip turned brown or rust color, meaning that it was high in minerals, we then connected the softener and used another test strip, and this time the test strip turned green, indicating the softener had stopped all those harsh minerals from being passed through.

The other way of knowing it was working was when Sabrina, my wife, came out of the shower and said she just had the best shower ever in our RV, and I didn’t want to get out. That is enough of a selling point for me alone.

Review Again in 6 MonthsSo why break this into two parts? It sounds like a winner, right? Well, at some point, we will need to recharge the water softener. Our home water softener does this automatically. We add salt to it occasionally, but the Camco portable softener is not automatic. So first, you have to do what is called back flushing, and then you can add two pounds of table salt back into the tank, which looks easy to access through a cap at the top of the canister. According to the instructions, all of this seems pretty simple and should only be done once every six months. So after this recharge, I will come back in six months and let you guys know how it went and if it was effortless. It comes with everything needed to perform this recharge, a fancy term for backwashing the system. We are adding an adapter to the outlet side to allow us to run water through the out and flush the system for seven minutes. Then, we will remove that adapter, fill our canister with two pounds of table salt, close the lid, and return to business.

I’m curious to see how all this works out and share my experience with you in the next six months.

In fact, we recommend trying boondocking before making the investment of setting up your rig with these costly add-ons. Tips for Staying SafeAre you ready to hit the open road and go boondocking? It’s a fantastic way to experience the great outdoors, but keeping safety in mind is important. First, ensure you have reliable communication devices and can get reception at your location. A Garmin inReach can be valuable if you are unable to get cellular reception. In an emergency, you need to be able to get help. Second, stick to designated boondocking areas and be aware of any potential hazards. No one wants to get stuck in a muddy or rocky area without the right equipment. Lastly, don’t forget to tell someone where you’re going and when you expect to be back. With these tips, you’ll be able to enjoy the freedom of boondocking while staying safe on your journey.

How to Conserve Water & ElectricityBoondocking can be a blast, but it can easily turn into a buzzkill if you run out of water or your battery dies. Luckily, there are plenty of ways to conserve water and electricity while still having a good time. First off, consider investing in a solar panel and a generator or lithium batteries to power your RV. This will save you from having to rely solely on your battery and greatly extend your boondocking stay.

When it comes to water, take shorter showers and turn off the faucet while brushing your teeth or washing dishes. Many people take “Navy Showers” when boondocking. This is when you turn on the water to get wet and lather up your soap. Then, turn the water off while you a scrubbing down and washing your hair. Finally, turn the water back on to rinse. This is a great way to conserve water but still get your daily shower. There are also items like Surviveware Biodegradable Wet Wipes in place of showers. You can also use a dishpan and reuse the same water for multiple dishes. And don’t forget to pack reusable water bottles to reduce plastic waste. With a little bit of effort, you can enjoy the great outdoors without sacrificing comfort or sustainability.

Fun Activities to Try When BoondockingHow about trying your hand at stargazing? You’ll be amazed at the twinkling constellations above with no city lights to interfere. Another option is to stay at a Harvest Hosts or Boondockers Welcome location. In these locations, you are near others if you run into problems. Also, they are usually fun because you are at a small business or an RV-friendly land owner. Stay one night and see how you enjoy it.

Thor Industries – RV ManufacturersFirst, we take a look at Thor Industries. Thor is the largest RV manufacturer and owns the most other RV Brand names, some of which you might already know and others you may be surprised about. Sean and Kenny certainly were. On top of owning a variety of RV brands, Thor Industries also holds a significant number of brands that go into the build of an RV, such as MCD, Coleman Mach A/C’s, and Suburban, to name a few.

Winnebago Industries – RV ManufacturersWe then move on to Winnebago Industries. Over the last couple of years, Winnebago has also been purchasing other RV Brands. Still, they also have branched out to watercraft, where they have purchased two popular watercraft companies. Winnebago has even purchased Lithionics, which is a Lithium battery company.

The REV Group – RV ManufacturersThe REV Group has been busy as well, owning RV manufacturers such as the classic Fleetwood Bounder and American Coach. We always enjoy it when they come on the show to talk about their lineup, but even we were surprised to hear about some of the companies they own. Two in particular that surprised us were Lance Travel Trailers & Renegade.

Forest River – RV ManufacturersForest River, another popular brand name, owns other popular RV manufacturers like Coachmen, Dynamax, and Palomino. Still, you probably did not know about some of the brands they now have under their umbrella.

These four companies comprise over 90% of all RV’s made in America. Still, there are a few companies out there that remain independent, like Storyteller Overland, Ember, and Alliance. However, these three are still very young companies compared to the four legacy brands.

Kenny and Sean took this subject one step further by breaking down the companies that own and manufacture most of the appliances and functions of an RV, like slide-outs, leveling jacks, toilets, refrigerators, and more.

This was an enjoyable topic for us to dive into and explore. We should also point out that we are not trying to say that having these companies own so much is bad or good. We just found it interesting.

Today I am reviewing Micro-Air’s EasyStart Soft Starter and EasyTouch RV Thermostat, a smart thermostat made for RVs. These are two RV upgrades we are glad we invested in.

I have owned the EasyTouch RV Thermostat for about three years, and I recently purchased and installed the Micro-Air EasyStart, although I used to have one on a previous A/C unit as well.

RV Upgrades – EastStartLet’s start with the EasyStart and the benefits. The EasyStart is one of those RV upgrades that does not have any downsides. Micro-Air recently added a double-down warranty. They will now double the length of your A/C warranty because tests of the EasyStart have shown to extend the life of your A/C unit, which is pretty amazing since that is not what it is originally designed to do.

The Micro-Air EasyStart is a soft starter for your RV A/C units that reduces the high energy pull A/C units have during compressor startups. This was mainly attractive to those of us wanting to operate our A/C units while unplugged, like dry camping or boondocking. This lower startup draw allows users to start their A/C units from smaller generators or even better inverters.

The Micro-Air EasyStart breaks the startup process into four short ramp-up sequences, using the least amount of amps possible for compressor startup. I can tell you from owning one, the other side benefit of this is a much quieter A/C startup. It reduces that harsh bang that is common with RV A/C units. Now we don’t hear the A/C go through its cycles while sleeping, which is really nice.

RV Upgrades – EasyTouch ThermostatNow onto the Micro-Air EasyTouch RV Thermostat. This has been a nice RV upgrade over our stock thermostat. For one, it’s all digital and has given our older RV a modern touch. On top of that, this RV thermostat is WIFI and Bluetooth enabled, meaning I can control the A/C from anywhere in or out of the RV. This thermostat is also programmable, allowing you to set specific temperatures throughout the week in advance. Although to be honest, I have never used that feature as my schedule changes from day to day.

Another great feature of this thermostat is it allows us to use both propane heat and our A/C heat pump simultaneously, meaning we can warm our RV up in a hurry if need be. This is one feature we have used more than a couple of times.

What I enjoy most about the EasyTouch Thermostat is the ease of use from my phone. I rarely use the main wall controls. Instead, bringing the app up on my phone is easy to check the temps and adjust them as needed.

I would say the only double-edged sword feature is its ability to update and make improvements over time. This sounds like a great thing, and all in all, it probably is. For example, our thermostat has gone through a few updates, but the most recent one is such a drastic update that I find myself looking for buttons and controls in the wrong menus. It’s like when your phone goes through a major update, and you have to relearn where everything is all over again. However, after using the thermostat for an entire weekend after the update, I feel comfortable with the new layout. I thought the old layout was just fine.

These updates are based on customer feedback, though, and I guess I was not loud enough to say it was perfect the way it was.

For those looking for specialty clubs dedicated to a particular make or model of RV, there are numerous options to choose from. For example, there is the WIT club for Winnebago owners.

Good Sam RV ClubThe Good Sam RV Club offers a range of benefits and services that can be advantageous to RV owners. The most attractive benefit is discounts on campgrounds, which can help individuals save money while traveling in their RVs. I really like the fuel discount at Pilot/Flying J fuel stations. A member can save 5 cents on each gallon of gas and 8 cents on every gallon of diesel. Additionally, members of the Good Sam Club get discounts at Camping World, which can result in significant savings. The Good Sam Club also provides roadside assistance, so members have peace of mind knowing that help is available if they ever need it. Finally, Good Sam offers insurance programs for its members’ RVs. These policies are competitively priced.

Additionally, many members find that the membership provides them with a sense of community and belonging to a larger network of RV owners who can offer support, advice, and assistance when needed.

These benefits should be weighed against the membership cost before joining the Good Sam Club. However, those who join will likely find plenty of advantages to having the Good Sam Club as a reliable and supportive partner in their RV adventures. Understanding the advantages and disadvantages is important before deciding whether or not to join. Therefore, individuals should research to make an informed decision that best suits their needs.

Good Sam ConsOf course, the Good Sam Club also has some drawbacks. For example, the discounts offered on campgrounds and RV parks may not always be the best deal available, so members should shop around before committing to the discount. Finally, since it is such a large club, many members do not always get the attention they need from Good Sam customer service representatives. Therefore, weighing the pros and cons of joining the Good Sam Club before committing is essential.

Good Sam RV Club CostThe cost of a Good Sam Club membership can vary depending on the type of membership chosen. The Standard Membership is $29 for one year, with additional memberships available for two or three years at $55 and $79, respectively.

Escapees RV ClubThe Escapees RV Club is an organization aimed at helping RVers with resources to create a successful RV life. The club provides services such as information about RV parks and campgrounds, discounts on camping fees and other products, access to networks of like-minded individuals in their travels, seminars on new technologies and maintenance tips for RVs, newsletters to keep members informed of upcoming events or changes in the industry, and assistance if members find themselves needing help while traveling. Additionally, they offer online discussion forums where members can ask questions or share advice with each other. If you have ever seen a Winnebago EKKO in person, you most likely thought, “that looks different!” Also, you may have wondered if it is a Class C or a B+. Today we are going to answer that question and more with Brian Thoreson. Brian is a product planner for Winnebago and had a big hand in developing the EKKO. The Winnebago EKKO is an all-wheel drive adventure vehicle 23ft long. But don’t let its small size fool you. It is packed with space-saving ideas and a long list of features.

Brian had this to say about the exterior design of the EKKO.

“First, we wanted to give the EKKO a unique rugged look that doesn’t look like a typical motorhome. The Ekko looks a bit more like a Van with the front cap styling on it than a typical Class C with the overhead buck. The EKKO has a rugged look, and the chamfered aluminum extrusions around all corners provide protection for the EKKO and for the use the EKKO may see. So, the whole look was unique and strong.” – Brian Thorenson, Winnebago Product Planner.

We also discuss Brian’s duties as a Product Planner and how his project involvement continues well after launching the RV. Brian shares how Winnebago collects and uses customer feedback to make changes to their RVs, not only future builds but also existing models.

IntroductionNothing new comes without controversy, and camping is no different. Along with the issue of slavery, Americans were also struggling with women’s rights and equality in this country. Even though women were not granted the right to vote until 1920, the fight for equality and the work by certain men to suppress that equality was alive and well in the late 1860s. Even women camping became a controversial topic to some.

William Murray on Women CampingWilliam H. H. Murray strongly advocated for women’s rights and believed that camping should be open to all genders. He argued that the outdoors could provide an equalizing force between men and women and create a sense of solidarity. William Murray wrote extensively on how women were capable of more than just domestic chores and urged them to embrace nature as a means of self-improvement. He saw camping and outdoor activities as opportunities for women to develop greater physical and mental strength and create a sense of agency. Murray believed such experiences would ultimately help cultivate the “true spirit of democracy” that was so important during his time. As such, he was a pioneer in the movement for gender parity in the outdoors.

Thomas Bangs Thorpe on Women CampingThomas Bangs Thorpe, a contemporary of William HHH Murray, was an outspoken critic of recreational camping in America. Specifically, he argued against women participating in camping activities. He believed the physical and emotional strain it put on them would eventually lead to disease and death. He argued that camping exposed women to danger from wild animals, bad weather, and rough terrain. Furthermore, he argued that this type of outdoor activity was improper for women as it required them to partake in manual labor and activities more suited for men. Luckily, Thorpe’s opinion did not prevail. William Murray encouraged all people, including women, to take part in camping adventures to enjoy the beauty of nature.

Kate Field: Pioneer of Women CampingKate Field was an American journalist and travel writer who actively encouraged women to participate in the recreational camping experience. Following William Murray’s lead, she urged women to get outdoors and see the beauty of nature. To achieve this goal, Field organized tours to various campsites around the United States where accommodations for women campers were provided. She also wrote articles in magazines and newspapers encouraging women to take part in camping, emphasizing the health benefits of being exposed to nature. Field’s advocacy for women campers helped increase their participation, eventually making more campsites available with facilities specifically designed for female campers.

On one adventure, Kate Field and three other women ventured into the Adirondacks for two weeks. Since it was the three women alone, they carried all of their supplies, including fishing supplies, guns, and ammo. These women coined themselves the Black Fly Club. They brought food and had a diet of what Kate Fields said was “flap jacks and maple syrup,” but they also had venison and trout that they acquired themselves. Although they had detractors, they had a successful trip. This was in 1869, around the same time as William H H Murray’s popularity. She considered herself one of Murray’s Fools, a term for those early camping adopters who traveled to the Adirondacks because of Murray’s book.

Women Camping Lecture CircuitBased on this adventure, Fields developed a lecture and hit the travel circuit describing the experiences of the Black Fly Club. A New York Times article in 1871 quoted her as saying, “it is preferable for a woman to travel alone in the backwoods than from city to city.” Her efforts to thwart the opinion that women should not camp, especially alone, successfully got an increased number of women to try camping in the Adirondacks.

Kate Field did make several controversial comments at the time about camping, particularly surrounding the participation of women. She argued that camping benefited women’s physical and mental health and allowed them to explore the world in a way previously closed off. She also highlighted that certain outdoor activities – such as fishing or hunting – were traditionally considered ” manly ” and that women should not be excluded from participating. Her comments sparked debate but ultimately helped open up the world of camping to more people. In particular, her advocacy for female campers meant they could enjoy outdoor activities without feeling like they had to conform to traditional gender roles or stereotypes. By helping turn recreational camping into a popular pastime, Kate Field has made a lasting contribution to the outdoor community.

Women Camping TodayAs I ponder camping and RVing today, there are plenty of solo women campers and RVers. There are also groups of women, with no men, that enjoy camping, RVing, and the outdoors in general. It is hard to believe that just 150 years ago, there were such negative opinions about women alone in the wilderness. My wife, Julie, has spent several days and nights in the woods with a handful of other women she hikes with. This is the norm in modern times. We owe a debt of gratitude to brave advocates like William Murray and Kate Field for going against the grain so long ago that all could enjoy the outdoors.

RV Detailing by JM AutoStylingWho doesn’t like their RV looking shiny and new? The problem is, it’s so much work! Up and down the ladder and for me burning out my shoulders and back. Too many people go out and buy thing off of an influencer’s recommendation without knowing if they will be a good fit for them. You’ll especially want to wait to buy extras like extra solar panels until you know how often you’ll be using them. If you plan on short trips, these extras may not be necessary.

Regardless of RV type, the most important things you’ll need are a surge protector or electrical management system, water filter, sewer hose, and power cord. Otherwise, you can get plenty of enjoyment in your RV with the basics like kitchen supplies such as dishes, utensils, and cooking equipment, as well as some storage containers and cleaning supplies. Then once you start camping more, you’ll notice which items are important to you. For example, if you spend much time in your outdoor space, you may want a fancy grill or nice camp chairs. On the other hand, if you plan on camping in cold climates, you will need space heaters, dehumidifiers, and added insulation material.

BooksThis one is not necessarily considered in RV accessories unless you are an avid reader, but if you plan on taking extended trips in your RV or living in it full-time, don’t overfill it with books or magazines. Books weigh a lot, and RVs have strict weight limits, not to mention the towing capacity of your tow vehicle if you have a travel trailer or fifth wheel. We are avid readers and opted for a Kindle to take our reading on the road. It’s lightweight, and we can download as many books as we want without adding extra weight.

You’ll also need to consider where to store your books when you’re not using them. Even though RVs are spacious, there is limited storage space. It takes a bit of effort to make the most out of it. Consider pouches and boxes to store items you don’t often use, like board games, cards, or extra blankets. Utilizing the space under couches, beds, and benches can be a great way to ensure everything has its place.

An Expensive Onboard GeneratorDon’t Rush to Buy an Expensive RV Generator. A portable generator will do just fine to handle basic needs such as powering a few lights and small appliances. However, if you plan to camp in remote locations or use your RV for long periods, investing in a higher-capacity generator with more features may be worth the added expense. Consider what type of power requirements you have and how often you will need to use the generator, then make an educated decision that fits your budget and needs. If you use your RV frequently, investing in a top-of-the-line model with extra features like a remote start may be worth it. Take a few trips to determine how much electricity you are consuming.

We had an onboard Onan generator in our first RV. Unfortunately, the generator was not fuel-efficient and generated way more power than we needed. In our second RV, we elected not to get the onboard generator. Instead, we purchased two portable generators that can be linked. They are much more field efficient and are perfect for our power needs. We only take them when we know we are going to need them. Lastly, make sure to research different models and brands and read online reviews before making a purchase.

Gas Stop Emergency Propane Shutoff ValveHey everyone, today, we are talking about the GasStop Emergency Propane Shutoff Valve. No, not about if you ate too many beans last night type of gas Stop. We are talking about how to stop a propane leak in your RV, especially when you might not even be aware of the issue.

What does GasStop do?GasStop is the only emergency 100% shut-off safety device for bottled and portable propane systems. In the event of a major leak, GasStop will instantly and automatically shut off the gas flow.

When GasStop recognizes a significant propane leak, it automatically shuts the gas flow off right from the tank before the line reaches your regulator. This will prevent your RV from being exposed to propane during the event of a leak and stop a potential source of fuel for a fire.

Will it affect the use of appliances?You may be wondering if GasStop prevents propane from flowing in case of emergency, will it also slow that flow in regular operation or reduce the performance of my gas stove or furnace? The short answer is no, and I can tell you after using GasStop for over a year in my RV, I see no change in my burner performance or how efficiently my furnace works in the winter.

The only ConI installed GasStop on my own for our RV and would say it is a fairly easy job, but one particular step may make someone uncomfortable. Although you could probably skip this step, it may not be pertinent to all installs.

When I installed the GasStop, I wanted to put my regulator cover back on to protect my regulator. Unfortunately, this meant I had to drill a new hole for the regulator cover because adding the GasStop into the propane line moved my regulator over by a few inches. Although the downside is that not everyone may be comfortable drilling a hole near their propane tank, I felt completely fine with this action. Still, if you are uncomfortable with the idea, leave the cover off or have an RV service center do the installation.

How to turn on the systemNow that the GasStop is installed open your propane valve and press the GasStop gauge three times. This will allow the propane to flow through your system unless it detects a major leak, in which case it will automatically stop the flow of propane.

A side benefit of GasStopYou can use the GasStop to test for minor leaks in your system. After your propane is on, the gauge quickly builds and holds pressure. Now with all your appliances turned off, the needle on that GasStop gauge should stay right where it is. If the needle were to start to fall, that means propane is leaking out of the system somewhere, and it is time to get a spray bottle with soapy water and start looking for a leak or bring the RV in for service to have a certified tech search for you.

Today we welcome back Kent Wilson, COO of SnapPad. Kent has information on some new products, including the RV SnapPad Cap. We also get a sneak peek of some exciting new products coming in the future.

RV SnapPad’s Cap for StackersOne of the new products we talk about is their Cap, which is designed for use with stackers. If you have any experience, you probably noticed stackers are a bit brittle. The Cap is made to fit on top of the stackers to help extend the life of the stacker and give you extra grip, preventing your jacks from slipping.

When we asked Kent what some of the challenges are when developing a new product, he had this to say. “The issue with jack feet is that they are all slightly different. Some of them have upturned lips. Some are square or octagonal, so you always have a slightly different engineering challenge when it comes to leveling systems. When you go to the travel trailers, they have stabilizers. It could be a hand crank system, it could be an electric system, and there are also different feet. Some of them are round, some of them are square.”

Made in the USAKent also talks about the advantages of having everything made in the USA and from recycled rubber, especially when other companies had supply chain issues due to outsourcing materials to foreign countries.

We chat about testing all the new products and how they are made from the same strong, durable rubber that we are familiar with from their other products. SnapPad also did a lot of real-world testing with the new products by sending them out to customers and having them test them in real-life situations.

We were happy to hear they are now making SnapPads for truck campers and various travel trailers. However, as the company grows, new challenges arise. Kent talks about what some of the growing pains have been.

The Search for an E-BikeWhen I first started shopping around for an electric bike, I was immediately turned off by the price — with some costing thousands of dollars. So, I looked for an e-bike that would meet all my needs and stay on a budget of under $1000. I eventually found that bike: the Ecotric fat tire folding e-bike. At a $780 price tag, it was significantly under budget.

Why an E-Bike?A nice bike would be a great way to run errands or explore surrounding areas after the RV is set up. But I knew I would be limited to how far I could go and how long I could ride. This is really where the e-bike appealed to me. I knew that with an electric-assist bike, I could ride out faster and farther than I ever could on a standard bike. The simple one-push button to toggle from low, medium, and high power made it easy to always have the proper amount of power for any riding situation. And a twist of throttle located on the right side of the handlebar makes it a breeze to kick in a quick burst of power when needed to pass, climb a hill, or when we want to zip around.

Ecotric FeaturesThe bike has a 500-watt motor, 36-volt lithium battery, three power modes, and a full-throttle function that turns the bike into a scooter with a range of over 40 miles. It also features front and rear disc brakes, weighs under 60 pounds, and can reach 20 miles per hour. Unfortunately, this bike today is priced at $900 on the company’s website, but I bet you could still find it for less with some shopping around.

Ecotric ConsThe only cons this bike has is the same as all other E-bikes. It is heavy. It weighs just under 60 lbs, so if you plan to lift this bike in and out of a tall SUV, this might not be the right choice unless you plan to carry it on a bike rack attached to a hitch. At that point, you may want to look for a non-folding E-bike.

Final ThoughtsI have owned the bike for over three years and have gone over 3,000 miles with it. Unfortunately, I am just now seeing a slight degradation in the battery life. I don’t believe I would still get the 40 miles range I once did with the pedal assist. However, that is fine as I usually do not go out that far in a single ride. Also, a replacement battery is priced reasonably at $260. However, everything else has held up very well. I’m still even on the original tires, although the rear one is starting to wear down.

There is a significant decline in RV sales, with dealers rethinking their selling strategies. They find that consumers are taking more time to make purchasing decisions. Also, first-time buyers of RVs are very hesitant to purchase a second one due to poor quality control from the last two years.

High interest rates are also causing the purchase of campgrounds to slow down in the US and Canada. Hopefully, this does not mean it will become more challenging to find a campsite in the future.

Blue Compass Acquires Coach-NetBlue compass is an up-and-coming RV business that has been making big moves since 2018. In their newest buying spree, they purchased Coach-Net, a company specializing in roadside assistance for RVers. Blue Compass has also been buying up dealers across the United States. Kenny & Sean discuss the pros and cons of their business model regarding how they absorb these companies into their own.

The Father of CampingThis episode begins a series of the origins of RVing in America. It really began before automobiles even existed. The 1860s was a rough time in America, with the Civil War being fought from 1861 to 1865. With that, the nation was divided over slavery and other issues. At this time, William Murray became an adult and started a major movement in the U.S. called camping!

William Henry Harrison Murray, the father of recreational camping in America, was born in Guilford, Connecticut, in April 1840. His love of nature developed due to a quack doctor’s recommendation that he follow a plow as it turned soil.

After graduating from Yale University and becoming a pastor at Corner Church in Boston, Murray took his first vacation to the Adirondacks of New York, which sparked an enthusiasm for camping. He wrote essays about his experiences which were later compiled into Adventures In The Wilderness: or Camp-Life In The Adirondacks, published by Osgood Fields & Co. in 1869, igniting “Murray’s Rush” – an influx of thousands visitors to journey to the Adirondacks to go camping.

Despite some criticism over unprepared infrastructure around Saranac Lake, William H. H. Murray’s work helped establish camping as one of America’s favorite pastimes while encouraging people back into nature away from the urbanization and its negative health effects.

Mind Over Land’s MissionMind Over Land is a non-profit organization getting military veterans outdoors with vehicle-based overlanding adventures. The organization is operated by three founders who are also veterans. One of the members, Seth Smith, joins us to discuss the importance of getting vets back outdoors to help them with readjustment and enjoy the camaraderie of others and working as a team.

Mind Over Land wants to make it as easy as possible for vets to join their trips, which is why it only costs fifty dollars to join a trip. This includes everything they need for a successful trip. A participant doesn’t even need to own an overlanding vehicle. Their fifty dollars ensures a seat in one of the many vehicles going out.

Benefits for Military VeteransSeth had this to say when we asked if a vet hesitates about joining a trip.

You know you’re going to be camping, you’re going to be in a truck, and you’re going to be rolling around. The hope is that especially military folks coming out that have gone out to the field once or twice, so they know what they’re getting into. I think the main thing is the cost of the vehicle or the other stuff like that. Still, at only fifty dollars, they can come try it out. We have every type of platform with Jeeps, Toyotas to Gladiators. It’s a great mix for the overlanding world. If they don’t know if it’s right for them or if they’re thinking of buying a vehicle but don’t know which one to get, they can come out with us for the weekend and try before they buy.

Seth wanted to make sure everyone knows the first time you say hello to the team will not be on the day you leave for the weekend. These trips are well planned out, with several emails leading up to the trip that includes what you need to bring and what your vehicle (if you are bringing your own) will need to navigate the course successfully. Mostly everything is provided for the induvial, such as GPS, Radios, and even meals. You may wonder how they can do all this for fifty bucks.

Commonly, UL-62133 certification is an extremely important requirement for electric vehicles, such as cars, motorcycles, and buses. These vehicles rely heavily on their batteries to power and keep them running safely and efficiently. This is why it’s so important that these batteries must meet the requirements of UL-62133 before they are used in these vehicles.

UN 38.3 Safety CertificationUN 38.3 is a United Nations Transportation Testing Procedure for Lithium Ion Batteries. In terms of lithium battery transportation safety, UN 38.3 is the most common standard in the world. This certification is required for shipments of lithium-ion batteries by air, land, or sea. The testing required for UN38.8 certification includes altitude, thermal, vibration, shock, external short circuit, impact & crush, overcharge, and forced discharge testing. Many of Battle Born Batteries’ most popular models have successfully passed this testing. This certification ensures that their products can be safely transported by virtually any means.

UN 38.3 certification is required for various products, including lithium batteries used in electronic devices such as laptops, cell phones, and digital cameras. My wife and I have been RVing for some time now, but when we started, we quickly discovered our pup’s one true love: the front dashboard of our Class A! The county is going as far as handing out citations to farmers claiming they are breaking campground codes by hosting RVers on their land for one night. But, of course, these farmers are not running campgrounds. Sean and Kenny express their disappointment in San Luis Obispo County.

Justin Parrot from Blue Ox towing joins us today to discuss all the benefits and features of their Blue Ox Patriot Brake.

Why Get A Tire Pressure Monitoring System1. Blowouts – most due to underinflation 2. Overheating – Underinflated, failing wheel bearings, dragon brakes

I have had the system for over 2 years. I have the flow-through sensors on my truck and fifth wheel. The flow-throughsensors allow you to leave the sensors on when putting air in the tires.

The sensors are easy to install – you just replace your current valve stem caps with the sensors. The anti-theft feature prevents people from taking the sensor when parked. If you have a long RV, you will need to install a repeater somewhere in the coach. I had to do this when we had our 44-foot Cyclone. It needs a 12-volt source of power to operate, so I wired it directly to the 12-volt panel in the RV. The programming is easy to follow. Each sensor is programmed depending on where it is on the vehicle, the specifications of that tire, and what axle it is on. Each system can monitor 22 tires. We currently have 10 between our truck and fifth wheel

The system comes with mounts that you can use to attach the display to the dashboard in your car. I attached mine using the rubber stand that was provided. As you drive, the monitor scrolls through the pressure and temperature for each of your tires. The system alerts you with both audible and visual alarms when the parameters you set for temperature and pressure are exceeded. Setting up the system is very easy, and the instruction manual is clear, and there are a lot of youtube videos that show how to do it.

Does it work, and is it worth it?I have to say yes to both of these. Since we have had the TPMS, we have had two instances where it saved us from blowout damage. If you don’t know what I am talking about, google RV tire blowout and see the picture of the damage a blowout can cause to the RV. It is awful.

The first instance was just a couple of weeks after we installed the system. We were driving down I-20 when the tire pressure monitor started beeping. I could see one of the rear tires was starting to lose pressure quickly. I pulled over immediately and saw that there was a tear in the sidewall of the tire. If we had waited any longer, the tire would have blown out and caused serious damage to the RV. Thanks to our tire pressure monitor system, we were able to avoid any damage. I could not feel it in the steering wheel, so it really was the TPMS that alerted us.

The second was on I-10. We were hauling the Arctic Fox, and I received an indication of lowering pressure on the inside tire of the driver’s side dually wheels. Again, the TPMS alerted me before I could feel it in the steering wheel. We were able to pull over and change the tire before any damage was done.

The first occasion potentially prevented thousands of dollars in repairs to the RV, and the second potentially prevented an accident.

Pros and ConsThe first pro is that it works, as indicated in the examples above. It also has an easy setup and is fairly hands-off once it is set up. The sensors are also transferrable when you get new tires.

The one con I have is that the sensors require CR1632 batteries. These are very hard to find in stores. I try to have enough on hand for my sensors by buying them when I see them. If you wait until the battery dies, you may have to wait until one comes from an online order. I wish TST would have designed it with a more commonly available battery. Luckily the batteries will last an entire camping season, so it is not a huge concern.

Do We RecommendOverall, I would recommend this TPMS to an RVer. There are others on the market, but I do not have any experience with them to compare. however, I know that this TPMS works.

Adam Christoffersen is the Product Manager for Winnebago Towables. He joins us to talk about the history of Winnebago towables and their future as they introduce two new RV’s to their lineup, the Hike 100 and Micro Minnie FLX. These new RV’s have boondockers and outdoor enthusiasts in mind with upgraded power systems, creative storage ideas for bikes and kayaks, and ways to conserve water.

Adam also shares some of his day-to-day responsibilities, what makes Winnebago towables stand out from other towables on the market, and how Winnebago implements customer feedback into their various products.

These in-house collaborations lead to some of the stand-out features in their new Micro Minnie FLX and the Hike 100.
