EJ Laubscher talks about his childhood growing up in South Africa and being chased by hippos, baboons and all sorts of other dangerous animals as a kid. After making the move to America with his family EJ worked on hog farms and started all kinds of horses as well as a couple zebras chasing his dream of becoming a trainer. Since discovering the world of cowhorse he has already won over a quarter million dollars and recently made the move with his wife and kids to Winnewood, OK to further grow his business.

Chris and Russell interview NRHA Million Dollar Rider, Matt Mills, at The American Performance Horseman in Arlington, Texas.
Born and raised in Southern California, Matt began riding horses at an early age. He enjoyed a successful career as a youth rider, earning multiple championships throughout California in a variety of disciplines including western pleasure, horsemanship and trail. In 1996 he switched his focus to reining and a few years later established his own training operation in Scottsdale, Arizona. He trains and shows futurity and derby horses and also coaches several successful non-pro and youth riders.
Matt is consistently ranked on the NRHA Top Twenty Professionals Riders list and has NRHA lifetime earnings of over $1,000,000.00. He is regularly a finalist at major NRHA events and has received several titles including NRHA Intermediate Open Futurity Reserve Champion as well as multiple titles at the National Reining Breeders Classic (NRBC). He has also earned several large futurity and derby titles including RMRHA Summer Slide, High Roller Reining Classic, SWRHA Futurity and NRHA Cowtown Classic.

Chris and Russell interview NRCHA Hall of Famer and Snaffle Bit Futurity Champion, Kenny Pugh, Sr.
Born in 1938, Kenny Pugh grew up in LeGrande, California. His family had a ranch in the mountains, in Squaw Valley, and he had some ranching relatives. At thirteen, he began going to Idaho to work with a relative, and when he was fifteen he never went home. He began cowboying, mainly in the high country, where at times, it could get as cold as forty below. He moved back to California, working on a large ranch for Jack Reynolds. “I cowboyed and broke colts,” Kenny explained. “In the winter, we did a lot of leather work. At the time, I was only interested in rodeos.” In 1961, Jack took Kenny to the fair to watch the stock horse classes. While watching the class, he decided that he could do it. Kenny met a young trainer at that show. Greg Ward and Kenny became friends, oftentimes traveling to shows and sharing rooms. “I’d pick Greg’s brain quite a bit,” said Kenny. Kenny worked on that ranch for five years, but when many people started bringing horses by to be trained, he decided it was time to try to make it on his own. Later on, in the 1970s, Kenny had a mare named Minnie Gal, whom he won a lot with. She later produced Kenny’s Snaffle Bit Futurity Champion, Sanpeppy Smoke. Kenny had many other Snaffle Bit finalists, Top Ten finishes, and a Reserve Championship in 1979.

Million Dollar Rider Jon Roeser takes his place in the National Reined Cow Horse Association Hall of Fame, joining his father, Jim, and oldest brother, Dan. The Roeser family is a legacy within the NRCHA. The Meridian, Idaho trainer doesn’t remember a day when he was not horseback with his father or three brothers completing a number of chores on their ranch in Idaho.
Gifted with starting young horses as well as riding broncs in the rodeo arena, for some time, Roeser considered becoming a rodeo athlete instead of a horse trainer. His dad’s suggestion to apprentice with other reined cow horse trainers turned the tide. Roeser moved to California and first worked with Benny Guitron and then Greg Ward, both NRCHA Hall of Fame members and masters of cow horse. He rode with Ward for several years, soaking up knowledge and learning not only horsemanship but how to run a horse training business.
In 1984, Roeser struck out on his own and trained out of California before moving back to Idaho in 2016. The Hall of Fame horseman is known for his smooth showmanship skills and ability to take a horse from homegrown to the winner’s circle.
With more than $1.6 million dollars in reined cow horse earnings, Roeser has claimed every major NRCHA event champion title, including the 1990 Snaffle Bit Futurity, as well as the 2005 World’s Greatest Horseman win. He’s given back to the association through his time serving on the board of directors and through the NRCHA limited aged events, cattle, ground, ethics, and executive committees.

Jeff Medders, the President of Cowboy Channel, is interviewed by Chris Dawson and Russell Dilday. Growing up on a cattle ranch in southeastern Oklahoma, Medders had a passion for rodeo and all sports in general. He was an all-state football player in 1981 and headed to college to pursue his dream of being a television sportscaster. All was going according to plan until 1989, when he was approached by a Tulsa-based company to host America’s Horse, AQHA’s new television show on ESPN. Soon after, his hosting role grew to include the Wrangler World of Rodeo and the National Finals Rodeo. Having grown up in Oklahoma and attending the NFR in Oklahoma City every year, it was a dream come true.
Over the next two decades, Medders’ resume grew by hosting thoroughbred racing and LPGA golf coverage on ESPN, poker, and motorcycle racing on CBS Sports, but nothing tamed his passion for the sport of rodeo and the National Finals Rodeo. Today his company, Geronimo Productions, produces more major cowboy events than any other production company in the nation. Championship Bull Riding on Fox, Cinch High School Rodeo Tour on RFD-TV, and of course, all of the PRCA’s events on CBS Sports Network, including the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo. Jeff Medders has been the television host for over 20 National Finals Rodeos.

Chris Dawson and Russell Dilday interview NCHA and NRCHA Professional Horseman, Boyd Rice. Boyd Rice has amassed earnings in excess of $3.8 million in the Western performance horse industry. Well respected professionally and personally, his successes have come from natural talent, hard work, and family support.
Accomplished professionals surrounded Boyd as he grew up within the Rice family. His father, Sonny, uncles Raymond and Ronnie, along with his cousin, Tag, and brother, Matlock, all earn a living as cutting horse trainers. Chris Dawson and Russell Dilday interview Jim Jirkovsky! From breeding to judging, Jim Jirkovsky has been involved in virtually every facet of the Appaloosa industry for more than four decades. From his high school days when he would sneak out of class to go to rodeos, a deep passion for horses was instilled in him, turning into his life's work and a mindset that revolves around showing everyone how good an Appaloosa is can be. An ApHC-carded judge since 1987, Jim has served multiple terms on the national board of directors, has supported and served his regional club loyally for decades, and was recognized for his contributions beyond his barn throughout the region over a long period by his induction into the Nebraska Hall of Fame.
Known to be a formidable competitor in the show ring, "Cowboy Jim" had many wins that predated the national pointed system, and since 1979/1980 has amassed a staggering 9,646.3 open points in everything from Halter to Reining to Driving and Heritage, and shown more than 400 horses to 334 Top Tens, 38 National Championships and Reserves, and 45 World Championships and Reserves. But it is the mentoring, coaching, and training that have helped his clients and friends achieve their highest goals that he is most proud of.
Exhibiting, training, and coaching for years, Jim has played a significant role in producing 12 World's Best Appaloosas, three Iron Horse Award winners, and two of the only 16 Appaloosas in history to earn Gold Medallions. Ready with advice and assistance, Jim has lived daily as a mentor in every arena. He has represented the Appaloosa breed as an ambassador in open competitions, venues, and events worldwide.
Chris and Russell interview Jeff Mixon, who is the trophy husband of Abby Mixon. Jeff currently spends his days helping Abby build her training facility at their new location in Marietta Oklahoma. His nights are spent doing security contracting or working for the Love County Sheriff's Office. Casey Deary, an NRHA Professional Horseman, is interviewed by Chris Dawson and Russell Dilday! Casey Deary grew up in Texas riding horses, taking low-cost colts, training them, and reselling them, allowing him to grow his training business. Deary won the National Reining Horse Association Futurity in 2021 on Ten Thirty, 2012 on Americasnextgunmodel and again in 2015 on Shesouttayourleague, and has made the finals at many major limited-age events. He has earned more than $1.5 Million in reining competition. Clayton Edsall, an NRCHA Million Dollar Rider and NRCHA World's Greatest Horseman, is interviewed by Chris Dawson and Russell Dilday. Clayton Edsall’s horsemanship and natural talent are a product of his upbringing. Clayton is not only a talented horseman, he is the true definition of a cowboy. He was raised in Montana and grew up on his family's cattle ranch. Ranch life demanded the efforts of the whole family, which Clayton is appreciative of. He grew up managing a variety of tasks such as branding, doctoring, roping, and farming; along with riding and training horses. Clayton’s passion for horse training began at a young age, and at 17 he decided to leave the ranch to further his knowledge of horse training. He studied and worked with some of the best horsemen around such as Joe Wolter, Brian Neubert, Tink Elordi, Ray Hunt, and Tom Dorrance. In 2005 Clayton entered his first Snaffle Bit Futurity and finished as a finalist. For the past 11 years, he has been successfully competing, training, and conducting clinics. Clayton makes well-rounded performance horses that are good outside of the arena gathering cows, as well as performing in the show pen. Clayton humbly believes that his success is dependent on a lot of hard work and resiliency. In 2013, Chelsea Barney joined his team and now oversees the barn management and overall horse care. She has a wide variety of horse experience and knowledge. Chelsea grew up riding and competing at her mother’s hunter/jumper show barn, and after graduating from Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, she moved to Monterey and managed the Equestrian Center at the beautiful Santa Lucia Preserve in Carmel Valley, California. Chelsea’s background and equine husbandry knowledge are an important asset to Clayton’s training program. Clayton and Chelsea were married in 2018. They have two children together, Weston, and Rylee, who already seem to have a natural passion and love for horses as well. Doug Williamson, an NRCHA Million Dollar Rider, is interviewed by Chris Dawson and Russell Dilday.

Doug Williamson has truly lived the Western dream life movies are made from. Born in the Southeast corner of Oregon, Doug was the oldest son of Sylvan and Barbara Williamson. Raised as a cowboy on the family ranch and riding a horse from the time he could crawl, Doug’s first victory came at the age of five while riding behind his Dad in a match race! Doug’s love for the racehorses grew and it wasn’t long before he was on the tracks, himself. He also participated in Western events, winning his first buckle at the age of 8 in hackamore reining. At thirteen he won his first buckle calf roping, then, a year later when his dad was seriously injured in a riding accident, Doug took over the duties of running the family ranch. Sylvan Williamson always had an eye for great horses and purchased one that would turn into one of the best horses Doug would ever ride. His name was Baldy C. The horse could do anything and let Doug know what a truly great horse felt like. When Baldy C was 16 years old When Doug was 19, he rode Baldy C to become the high point working cow horse in the nation… a title they captured again two years later. At 17, Doug decided it was time to strike out on his own, and he secured a job as the cattle foreman for the Markham Cattle Company. While Doug was working on the ranches he always had outside horses in training, and he credits many of his skills to the old-timers he learned from. In the mid-sixties, he took a break from training full time and decided to rodeo for a living. On the road for about a decade, Doug calf roped, team roped, and rode a few saddle broncs, winning prestigious events all over the West, including the Ellensburg Rodeo. In1978 Doug went back to training full time in Nampa, Idaho, and for 14 years he trained everything from halter horses and cow horses, to English equitation horses. He made over 30 AQHA Champions in many different events and ranks among the AQHA’s most successful trainers. In 1987 the world came crashing down on the Williamson family when Doug was diagnosed with cancer. He was near death in the hospital but still had his great horses on his mind. Smoky has trained over 50 AQHA Champions, won countless saddles and trailers showing at the breed shows, won the Snaffle Bit Triumph on Lena’s Miss Starlet, won the Hackamore Triumph on Doc’s Malbec, the Two-Rein Cow Horse Championship on Doctor Gunsmoke and the Stockhorse Triumph on Freckle Face Clyde.
Smoky has served as the National Reined Cow Horse Association President. He was the 1995 NRCHA Stock Horse Man of the year – and is one of NRCHA’s lifetime money earners. He also places a tremendous amount of focus on educating judges. He believes the reined cow horse is probably one of the hardest things in the world to judge because it is so diverse and that people take judging too lightly, regardless of the effect on trainers, owners and breeders.

Hailey Kinsel, WPRA Multiple World Champion Barrel Racer and 2017 "The American" Champion Barrel Racer, is interviewed by Chris Dawson and Russell Dilday. In December 2018 and 2019, she won the championship at the National Finals Rodeo (NFR) in Las Vegas, Nevada. In 2020, the NFR was held at the Globe Life Field in Arlington, Texas, and Kinsel won her third world championship there. She also won the NFR Aggregate in 2020.
Hailey and her horse, Sister, have qualified for the NFR four times in her years in professional rodeo, in 2017, 2018, 2019, and 2020. Kinsel has been competing in rodeo since adolescence, winning awards through high school and college in both barrel racing and breakaway roping, as well as professional rodeo. Her horse, Sister, won the WPRA/AQHA Barrel Racing Horse of the Year Award in 2018.

Doug Williamson, an NRCHA Million Dollar Rider, is interviewed by Chris Dawson and Russell Dilday. Presented by Saddle House Custom Saddles & West Knives Doug Williamson has truly lived the Western dream life movies are made from. Born in the Southeast corner of Oregon, Doug was the oldest son of Sylvan and Barbara Williamson. Raised as a cowboy on the family ranch and riding a horse from the time he could crawl, Doug’s first victory came at the age of five while riding behind his Dad in a match race! Doug’s love for the racehorses grew and it wasn’t long before he was on the tracks, himself. He also participated in Western events, winning his first buckle at the age of 8 in hackamore reining. At thirteen he won his first buckle calf roping, then, a year later when his dad was seriously injured in a riding accident, Doug took over the duties of running the family ranch. Sylvan Williamson always had an eye for great horses and purchased one that would turn into one of the best horses Doug would every ride. His name was Baldy C. The horse could do anything and let Doug know what a truly great horse felt like. When Baldy C was 16 years old When Doug was 19, he rode Baldy C to become the high point working cow horse in the nation… a title they captured again two years later. At 17, Doug decided it was time to strike out on his own, and he secured a job as the cattle foreman for the Markham Cattle Company. While Doug was working on the ranches he always had outside horses in training, and he credits many of his skills to the old-timers he learned from. In the mid-sixties, he took a break from training full time and decided to rodeo for a living. On the road for about a decade, Doug calf roped, team roped and rode a few saddle broncs, winning prestigious events all over the West, including the Ellensburg Rodeo. In1978 Doug went back to training full time in Nampa, Idaho, and for 14 years he trained everything from halter horses and cow horses, to English equitation horses. He made over 30 AQHA Champions in many different events and ranks among the AQHA’s most successful trainers. In 1987 the world came crashing down on the Williamson family when Doug was diagnosed with cancer. He was near death in the hospital but still had his great horses on his mind. Ronnie Richards, an NRCHA Hall of Fame Member, is interviewed by Chris Dawson and Russell Dilday. Ronnie Richards was born in Davenport, Iowa, but his family moved to Sacramento when he was eight. The Richards had long been involved with horses – his grandfather had been a horse trainer and mule trader and his father was an outstanding horseman, as well. Four years later Ronnie traded for a standardbred/thoroughbred mare he called Nita. She had originally been shown by Don Dodge but had subsequently been used for stake racing. He won his first stock horse class on Nita, then went on to win the next 45 consecutive stock horse classes he entered! The pair was never beaten in a junior stock horse class. In 1955, when he turned 18, Ronnie started his own horse training business in Irvine, where he traded training one of Glen Thompson’s horses for the use of six tie stalls and a one-room cabin. Soon Ronnie began to appear in the winners’ circle, starting with Touch Of Texas at the Grand Nationals in 1959. He won the Junior Pacific Coast division “A” on Eddie Reed and in subsequent seasons won more year-end championships in that division that any individual in history, Lucky Libra, on whom he won California’s richest stock horse event in 1961, was a favorite horse for Ronnie, and his many titles included the 1966 Santa Barbara Nationals championship on Jimmy Wood as well as the Cow Palace Mare Class on Speedy Cash, in 1972. Mona Lisa was originally trained by Joe Yanez, then went to Don Dodge and finally to Ronnie and he and the great unregistered mare dazzle spectators and trainers nationwide. Mona Lisa is still considered one of the greatest reined cow horses of all time and was the first horse to win all three bridle horse classes at the Cow Palace. In 1974, he rode Lisa Chick, Mona Lisa’s only foal, to win the Stock Horse Stakes Championship in Monterey and the Mare Class at the Cow Palace. A list of Ronnie Richards’ winners reads like the “Who’s Who” of the stock horse world. Over the years, a collection of great horses, like Scooter Reigh, Hackamore Stakes Champion Ebony Chex, and Cow Palace Champion Poppa Chex made their way through Richards’ program. He won the Santa Barbara Championship and Reserve title on Cheshire Chex and Moon Chex, the Bakersfield Cow Horse Classic on Lucky Mac, and the Cow Palace on King Jay Bar, with which he also won the Phoenix Stock Horse Championship. Mounted on other great horses like Who Knows and Speedy Cash, Ronnie was a formidable competitor in the Open “A” Stock Horse Division. He and Mo Chex won the Del Mar Hackamore Stakes. Marco Tivio, one of Ronnie’s favorite horses, won scores of a championship for Ronnie. Sold twice, he earned multiple awards for other riders, as well. Ronnie Richards also took both the championship and reserve for the First Pacific Coast Stock Horse Stakes to ever offer a $10,000 purse. The large open shows of the fifties, sixties, and seventies were not as specialized as contemporary shows and stock horses, trail, pleasure, hunters, jumpers, and halter horses were all shown at the same shows, all in events in which Ronnie competed. The Del Mar Show was the site of some of Ronnie’s greatest triumphs. He won the Stock Horse Championship thirteen times and the Green Stock Horse Championship five years in a row, but more importantly, he met his future wife, Karin, there. The couple had two daughters, Susie and Laurie. A former NRCHA Board Member, Richards was named the National Reined Cow Horse Association Stock Horseman of the Year in 1997.

Her parents trained hunter/jumpers, pleasure horses, and worked cattle. She started showing before she could even walk, and by the time she was 6 years old, Veronica was showing cutting horses in youth classes. Veronica has competed in hunter/jumpers, pleasure horses, barrel racing, team roping, and cutting. When Veronica was 13, she started showing in the working cow horse in 2000. Veronica worked under her older brother John Swales, learning and honing her skills, developing her own training technique. Veronica's main focus has been in the reined cow horse, barrel racing, and cutting. She has competed in everything from the World's Greatest Horseman to the NRCHA Snaffle Bit Futurity.

Clay’s early passion was bareback horses; he won the South Dakota State Highschool Finals in Bareback Riding in 1999 and continued his rough stock career in college at National American University in Rapid City, SD. While still in college, Clay and his uncle started coordinating horsemanship clinics all over the country in concert with several well-known clinicians, including Buck Brannaman, Ray Hunt, and Curt Pate. Clay still credits these clinicians with teaching him the exceptional colt-starting & general horsemanship skills that he uses so effectively in his training methods today. J.W. Brooks is interviewed by Chris Dawson and Russell Dilday. J.W. Brooks was born in Durango, Colorado, and raised on the ranchlands of Colorado and Wyoming. He believes that it was this lifestyle that instilled in him the desire to preserve the country lifestyle and western heritage. From a very young age, it became apparent that J.W. was destined to become an Artist. At the age of ten, J.W. illustrated a children’s book and by the time he graduated high school, he was being commissioned for his western art. In 1994, J.W. was the youngest artist commissioned to render Phoenix, Arizona’s “Rodeo of Rodeos” rodeo lithograph. Phoenix later asked J.W. to be the featured artist again in 1996 and 1997. In 2004, he was honored again by Scottsdale, Arizona’s Parada Del Sol Rodeo to be their featured artist. In 1991, J.W. was hired by legendary hat maker, Kevin O’Farrell, owner of O’Farrell Hat Company, on a hunch that J.W.’s artistic hand would lend itself naturally to the crafting of a cowboy hat. It was during his apprenticeship under Mr. O’Farrell that J.W. realized a sense of pride and accomplishment in producing pieces of wearable art that stemmed from his own western heritage. J.W. has been the custom hat maker of choice for many professional cowboys as well as actors and entertainers. In addition to handcrafting cowboy hats and drawing western art, J.W. has gained popularity as a country-western singer. In 2004, J.W. entered and won the Arizona regional competition which propelled him to the top 15 contenders to be considered for CMT’s televised “Nashville Star.” Shortly thereafter, J.W. joined the house band at the famous country-western bar, Mr. Lucky’s where he had the honor of singing on the very stage where legends had sung before him, such as Waylon Jennings, Charlie Pride, J. Raised in Michigan, Ben began training and showing horses at the age of 12 showing Western Pleasure and All-Around horses. After moving to Pennsylvania for school, Ben worked for Christian Evangelist Lew Sterrett and gained presentation and public speaking skills as he traveled the United States with the ministry Sermon on the Mount. A whole new world of opportunity opened up to Ben when he decided to move to Texas to work alongside NRHA Professional and Hall-of-Famer Doug Milholland at the historic Waggoner Ranch. It was here that Ben began riding and training Reining horses, along with breaking two-year-olds for the ranch and cowboys. Ben also teaches at Stock Horse of Texas clinics in Texas, Oklahoma, Louisiana, and Alabama as well as giving clinics for 4-H and community horse programs. He has had the privilege of winning multiple VRH World Championship Titles, placing fourth at the 2020 World’s Greatest Horseman, being an NRCHA Limited Open Hackamore World Champion, and being the NRCHA Reserve World Champion in the Open Two-Rein. Ben and his wife Cameron reside in Bowie, TX where they operate Baldus Horsemanship. They look forward to what the future holds as Ben continues to pursue his passion for horses and training. The lessons he’s learned and the vision he has are all a part of the trail he rides.
Bozo Rogers, an NRCHA Professional Horseman and Judge, is interviewed by Chris Dawson and Russell Dilday. He is a multiple AQHA World Champion in reining and working cow horse and an NRCHA World Champion. He has won the NRCHA Stakes and the FEI World Reining Masters, and he is world-renowned as a top reining and cow horse trainer. In 2008, Todd's winnings made him the all-time leading money winner in the Reined Cow Horse competition. He achieved a $2 million rider status at the 2011 NRCHA Snaffle Bit Futurity.

Ashley Deacon, an NRCHA Professional Horsewoman, is interviewed by Chris Dawson and Russell Dilday. Ashley Deacon began her journey at a very young age with hunter jumpers in southern California. She rode jumpers, dressage, and hunters until high school when she was exposed to the sport of reining. She went to work for her first trainer at the age of 14, where she learned natural horsemanship, gaited horses, reining, and pleasure. Ashley started her own training business at the age of 18, teaching and showing in all-around and running barrels. At the age of 21, Ashley had the privilege of working for Ted Robinson, a 7x Snaffle Bit Futurity Champion. After a couple of years of working for Ted, she ventured out to Oklahoma to work for reining trainer, Craig Schmersal. Her love for the cow horse was too strong and she quickly got back into training reined cow horses when she went to work for Carol Rose Quarter Horses. In December 2014, Ashley and Lee Deacon were married and founded Deacon Equine in January of 2015.

Wade Meador has always had a passion for horses and quickly learned that the reined cow horse discipline is what he wanted to do for a living. In order for Wade to accomplish his goals, he sought out one of the best reined cow horse trainers in the industry, Todd Crawford. Todd was Wade's mentor and was known as his “right-hand man” for 5 years. In 2011 Wade Meador Performance Horses was established and now resides in Marietta, Oklahoma specializing in Futurity, Derby, and Non-Pro reined cow horses. Wade accredits much of the success of Wade Meador Performance Horses to his wife, Kori along with their two children, Kixi and Kall.
