Big revelations and unfoldings are happening over here, so let’s get into it! I had the pleasure of spending a couple hours with my friend, Shannon Clarke for an energetic exchange she calls “Unlocking Momentum.” It has been breakthrough-city ever since, and I’m really excited to show up today to share a little bit about what I’m learning along the way.

For those who are interested in body acceptance, body neutrality, and practises of self-love and self-acceptance, this episode will be a must listen. I don’t want to spill it all in the description, but wait until you hear what I found in one of my old journals…

The title of this episode offered me a dramatic unlocking and frankly, I needed to spill my guts about it here with you today.

This is an episode about life and personal development, and how we're always on a quest to learn more about ourselves and how to show up to our purpose. I'm sharing something that feels very vulnerable with you today, that I think has the potential to stir up some big feelings and a few a-ha moments. Dive in, my friend!

Let’s not pretend it hasn’t been an exorbitant amount of time since I last showed up with an episode of You Might Not Like It. In fact, that’s the entire point of this episode. It’s another chapter in a much bigger story, and as usual I’m inviting you for a front row seat. I have a feeling that this episode will resonate deeply if you and I are in any similar circumstances of feeling out of alignment, or doubtful in your ability to bounce back after a challenging season.

There’s a lot more that goes into your money situation than just the dollars in your bank account! Money mindset is something I’ve been exploring in my own personal development journey, which is why I was so eager to jump into today’s conversation with Tessa Paige, who offers financial coaching and mindset work for women who are working towards a feeling of empowerment and the ability to confidently make decisions surrounding their money.

Tessa shares about her experience after a relationship, moving into a corporate job, and realizing that the relief around money didn’t come even after the steady paycheck started to arrive.

We also talk about our money mindset as it relates to running a small business. The two are so connected! While, yes, the goal in a business is to drive money into your pocket, it’s also important for many of us to feel passionate about our impact and the work we’re doing. It’s not always easy to charge for your worth, especially when you’re newer in your business, or when the dollars aren’t exactly flowing in abundantly right now…

This episode will hit you just right if you’ve ever wrestled with a scarcity mindset surrounding money in your business, or if you’ve ever taken an ego hit in reading someone else’s fast-tracked success story.

I love Tessa’s approach on “releasing your timeline.” Your money situation will be completely unique from your neighbour’s, and comparison really does not serve you here. I say this all the time in my group program, CHEER CAMP, but comparison NEEDS context.

It’s a pretty cool moment when you see a client go through the exact journey you’ve been setting up in the background for a few years. Since this podcast is essentially one long story of building my second business as a coach and personal development teacher, I felt like I owed it to you to tell this story of the pieces of the puzzle coming together.

In this episode I’m talking about the client’s journey, and why it’s important for you as a business owner to be intentional about what you’re building and how it all fits together.

In my case, how a referral in a FB group directed someone to my website, which lead them to take the Pep Talk Quiz, where my free offering showcased my personality and passion for the work I'm doing. That new lead triggered a series of emails which guided someone who is truly my ideal client to start working with me 1:1 and join my personal development community, CHEER CAMP.

It's true what they say, that a small business owner does a little happy dance in the background after something like that! I really felt the impact of everything I've been creating over the last few years. I also want to bring such a compassionate perspective for those listeners who are at the very beginning of setting up this kind of system -- this is not something you can build in a day. I think this ep will really be a supportive listen for you.

Coaching wasn’t something Shannon Clarke went looking for. It started with a therapy session, which offered an invitation for Shannon to explore her inner world and see a different perspective for the world at large. Now, she helps people shed shame, to unravel and REVEAL their inner “wild.”

This episode is SO good for the soul. It’s supportive, encouraging, and includes a beautiful story of bravery and passion in business.

Perfect for you today if you’re feeling lost, or if you’ve been suppressing your dream for fear that it could never happen, or simply if you’re curious about what a coach’s path could look like! I love how Shannon speaks about trusting the process and resisting the need for a niche, or external validation.

A lot of small business mindset lessons here -- in fact, you might listen more than once.

Settle in and let’s just chat. I’m bringing you inside my business today in hopes that it’ll spark something in you that you can apply to yours! That’s what this podcast is all about: a soft place for small business owners to land when they’re in any stage of the journey.

In case that’s too vague, I’m talking about my Tiktok experiment and the video that’s almost at 1M views, my funk that took me out of my growth mindset and into scarcity for a hot minute, what I’ve learned from collaborating with other small business owners, and how my life has been taken over by book reports, spelling tests, and swimming lessons.

Perfect for a long drive, a workout, a walk, to have on in the background while you’re working, or while you’re power cleaning your kitchen. Enjoy!

It scared me that I could see myself staying in the same place, strength-wise, for the next thirty years plus years. I started 2023 unable to jog, jump, lunge, or squat, after spending the back-half of 2022 recovering from a major knee injury. Add in a complex relationship with body image, restrictive dieting, and exercise, and you’ll understand why it felt like a big deal to pursue a goal of strength for the first time ever.

If you enjoyed the Body Image Story episodes (#150, #151, #154, #165, and #176) I think you’ll love this one.

I have fallen in love with Shana Yurko’s practical and approachable system to start using video in your business marketing. It’s causing me to reevaluate all that’s been holding me back from leveraging this powerful tool (and btw, I think this episode might give you the itch to start doing the same…)

Shana’s not going to let you off the hook with your dusty old excuses for why you’re not showing up to market your business using video. It’s no accident that this episode was the very FIRST episode I’ve ever recorded video from -- it’s contagious! Even just being in her orbit makes me feel empowered to expand my video comfort zone!

In this episode you’ll hear:

  • a wake up call on whatever excuses are keeping you from getting started with video
  • some encouraging words for the part of you that feels so terrified to show up in this vulnerable way on camera
  • how different social strategies or platforms work for different types of businesses (i.e. reels vs. tiktoks!)

Ready to take this podcast episode to the NEXT LEVEL? Shana and I are hosting a joint workshop called “Show Up” on February 10th, 2023!

We’re looking to dig in with a small group of really serious participants who are ready to figure out EXACTLY what’s stopping them from leveraging video marketing in their businesses, and start down the path to changing that story. This is a paid experience ($37 USD per ticket) because we’re looking to deliver something way deeper than a free training.

We’re so excited to be putting this together for you and can’t wait to help you SHOW UP in 2023, starting with this workshop!

I felt really defeated that I wasn’t getting the traction needed to grow my business to the next level.

I felt like I had done all the things (email marketing, fb ads, the podcast, a powerful new quiz, a refreshed website, a new lead magnet, updated welcome sequence, etc.) and I still wasn’t getting anywhere with it.

I hung out in the pity-party zone for a bit before realizing that I had been marketing my business with a whisper, when what I really needed to do was build a stage and grab a mic.

This episode is sure to offer some reflection on your own marketing style, perhaps revealing an excuse or two that are keeping you quiet when what you know you need to do is get loud. This ep is all about leaving your comfort zone and shaking things up.

Today’s episode comes to you fresh off a 1:1 coaching session. What we talked about today felt too good to keep it a secret, so I had to share! We’re talking about an alternative to traditional goal setting.

You’ve heard all the “rules” for goals, like how they need structure, an action list, a deadline, something measurable, etc…

But what if that’s not really serving you right now?

Without knowing it, I’ve been using an alternative to traditional goal setting for the past few years, and it has been wildly helpful in keeping my intentions top of mind all year long. Good news: it’s really simple, it costs zero dollars, and it works.

If you’re looking for extra support in helping you get your ideas into reality, you’re looking for CHEER CAMP! I offer ongoing mindset support for small business owners and side-hustlers who are ready to quiet their self doubt and imposter syndrome to get a MAJOR confidence boost! If you’ve been feeling stagnant in what you’re working on, CHEER CAMP will help you find momentum again.

The Body Image Story continues today with Part 5 where I’m diving into a complicated history with clothing. I talk about the challenges of shopping for a larger body, the fear of having tags show, crying in the bathroom at age 12 trying on bathing suits, the triple layered tank tops that were tough to quit, and that awful, clingy fabric that showed up in every discount clothing store that showed off every unflattering lump and bump.

My relationship with clothing has changed, but the story isn’t close to over. In this episode I also dive into the horror story of meeting with a plastic surgeon to discuss a breast reduction, only to be handed a business card that said “Lose 50lbs and call me back.”

In this episode I’m talking about a mindset shift that helped me move beyond the confines of "working hours" and "off hours." Throw away the timeline with me, and let’s talk about how we can stop gatekeeping our joy for the hours outside of our work.

Quick note, my goal is never to push a mindset shift on anyone. I share this story in hopes that it might prompt you to think about your own working hours in a new light. What you do from there is totally up to you!

She’s a dose of real. She’s everything we’re about here on You Might Not Like It -- and in this episode we’re talking about micro-failures in the entrepreneurship world, getting ghosted, struggling to put yourself out there, and taking the ick out of marketing.

I’m so happy to introduce you to Lauren Grayson today, who created her photography business under circumstances that didn’t look anything like the other “about me” pages she saw in the industry.

Lauren shares the powerful story about how she took ownership over her unpolished story, and used that vulnerability to deepen the connections with her clients, both in her photography business and in her business as a marketing coach and online educator.

I wish I remember where I picked up this quote, but these words were everything I held onto while I was in the depth of recovery: “the trees in Winter are bare, but they are not dead. Spring can come in an instant.”

Spring has sprung, in a sense, and it has brought such a new appreciation for life and dedication to everything that feels in service of me and worthy of my attention. If you have gone through a challenging season, or if you’re in one right now, my hope is that this episode is a reminder of all that you’ve done to preserve.

This is almost a part two to the previous episode, where I shared the curveball story of my knee injury a few months ago. Since then, it's been a rollercoaster of ups and downs, all the while waiting for "normal me" to knock on my door and tell me she's taking over. Enter the realization: she's not coming.

This episode is a love letter to no longer waiting for normal, but taking each day as it comes.

Can’t a girl roll down a hill on a beautiful sunny day without rupturing a tendon in her knee?! The answer is no. Apparently the tendon had to GTFO and my Summer had to fold in on itself sending a major curveball through everything in my life that I thought I could control. Curveball is a probably an understatement. This episode has the story.

Fair warning: I’m not at the part yet where I can say I’m grateful for all the shiny life lessons this has taught me. It’s just not that kind of story yet.

Andy Bernard said, “I wish there was a way to know you're in the good old days before you've actually left them.” I’ve never forgotten it.

I’ve been a future-focused person for my whole life, and it has served me well. But something needed to shift so that I didn’t maintain that feeling of waiting for the good part to happen, since I’m pretty sure it’s been happening all around me.

This episode is a love letter to the journey. It’s an injection of gratitude and perspective for your day, and I think you’ll love it.

I went back and forth a hundred times about posting this fairly short episode today, after having such a profound experience this morning. This story is the epitome of first world problems. And it’s likely going to be a difficult listen for those with a different view on the mask mandates lifting here in Canada. I ultimately decided to share this episode for the folks who feel similarly optimistic, but also quite guilty for any joy and excitement. It’s a tough subject to talk about right now, because it feels very charged. It’s entirely possible that I made the wrong choice to share it today. I took a risk. I hope it finds you well.

OH, and if you haven't seen the gum commercial I'm talking about, here it is.

“I believe when you stay close to the flame of whatever you want, it’s easier to stay motivated. I didn’t have that around me at the time, so I needed to go out and find it.”

I’m so excited to dig up an interview with one of the original CHEER CAMP members, Tanya Lupinski, that we recorded right when that first program ended. Tanya works for the government full time, and is raising two beautiful girls with all of the confidence and self-worth that she is only now starting to fully embody in her 30s.

“I thought I was the most self-aware person I’ve ever met, to be honest. I had all the stories, I knew all the things. CHEER CAMP was the only community that I’ve been in that gave me internal things to look at month after month. I started doing the work and I realized “Oh! That’s not why I’m the way I am! There’s a deeper thing here, there’s a deeper thing there…” I firmly believe in owning your story, and I think I was owning the same story I started telling myself when I was 15. That was the perspective of a child! That’s not the story anymore, and it’s certainly not all of the story.”

I think you’ll love this conversation about prioritizing your happiness and staying open to the possibility of lasting inner change.

Make sure you’re getting emails from me because that’s where I’ll be rolling out the information about the newly reimagined CHEER CAMP experience! Head over here and drop your info: www.laurakelly.co/email

Hello from creative expression / free play week! I wrote myself a prescription of rest, and it turns out it’s wayyyy harder than I thought it would be. Rest can be triggering when you’re so used to pushing new ideas forward and looking to your achievements for a reminder that you’re doing okay. (But it's also fun, and we'll talk about that too!)

Today’s episode also touches on the story of me healing my body image, so if you’ve enjoyed those episodes you should find comfort in this one as well.

We’re in a cool chapter of the podcast right now! I’m not in a how-to phase by any stretch, so we’re just living and learning and telling the stories, and for now that feels like enough. I like to think this episode would resonate with anyone who struggles with rest vs. rushing to what’s around the next bend. Let me know what you think!

This podcast started in 2018 as a way to document the transition out of my first business as a wedding photographer and into my second as a... (well, I didn't know what it was going to be at the time -- that was the whole point!)  Today's episode demanded it's own chapter in the story. It was an ordinary day, on the back-end of what some could consider failure, and it lead to some really beautiful clarity.

I can't believe we're here already, and yet it's really only the beginning!

It’s taken me a long time to be able to tell this story, but time is exactly what I needed to support myself during this particular chapter.

“You Might Not Like It” started as a way to document my transition from one business into another, and it’s not complete without showcasing the “messy middle” of it all. This one gets messy, friend.

You’ll hear me reference three episodes during today’s podcast, which are linked below:

Episode 139: Losing & Finding Your Voice https://laurakelly.co/139-2/
(This was the funk that happened in Feb/March 2021 when I was realizing that my online course, SPIT IT OUT, wasn’t the right thing for me)

Episode 143: Up and Up! https://laurakelly.co/143-2/
(This is the creation of CHEER CAMP episode!)

Episode 159: How to Pick Yourself Up After You Fall https://laurakelly.co/159/
(This is the one where I share the story of the failed launch in the Fall of 2021)

The last time I fell this flat on my face it took me 6 months to get the confidence to try again. This time, it took me about 2-3 hours. What changed? I’ve been hanging out with the members of the first ever squad of CHEER CAMP over the last couple weeks to record these stories and testimonials. Originally I thought maybe I’d put a few nuggets into an episode here and there, but their stories are so powerful and I think you’re really going to relate to each of them.

In this episode you’ll get to hear from Sylvana from Bee Wellness. Sylvana started working 1-on-1 with me right at the start of her new business. 6 months later, Sylvana joined CHEER CAMP and the leaps and bounds since then have been astounding.

This is a powerful conversation that will be music to your ears if you’ve got some big ideas but struggle to get them into execution. (Especially the part about challenging yourself to step outside your comfort zone in the early, early days of business!) What an inspiration to hear about the first year in business -- you’ll love this one.

“You know it when you feel it and when you see it in somebody else,” says Cheer Camper, Holly. “So for that reason it wasn’t like we learned about confidence and then woke up completely transformed like, “cool, I’m so confident now!” But I think confidence is being sure in yourself and knowing who you are, where you want to go, and how you want to feel when you get there. Each month we learned more and more about who we are, we learned about the things that are holding us back and how to shed them, and I think through that process I found confidence.”

In today’s episode we’re going deep on everything there is to know about the magic of CHEER CAMP, my 6 month personal development program! Applications are officially open for the Fall 2021 semester and I’m taking 8 people through this life changing experience of self-discovery starting in just over a month.

In this episode I share some of the big takeaways from spending 4.5 hours in a psychedelic mushroom trip, and how the experience changed my life in a profound way. It’s a very candid and honest retelling of some of the abstract things I saw and realized. (I even read some of the words I journaled that night while coming back into my reality…)

This episode is an ode to self-exploration in every form. So much of this experience is an extension to The Body Image Story series on the podcast, so if you’ve already listened to those you’ll get a much richer listen here.

Things get weird on this one, I hope you’re ready for a ride!

Are you here because you want to hear about how I took shrooms in a yurt? It’s just one part of a muuuuch larger story, and it starts here.

In this episode I’m opening up about my search for outside the box tools to “seal in” my journey towards self-love from the inside out. (If you’ve been listening to the Body Image Story series, this one picks up where we left off.) This story starts with my very first experience at an energy healing session, and comes with many other opportunities for growth in the form of self-exploration.

It’s a fun one, hit play!

Trigger warning for this episode: mentions of dieting, weight loss, disordered eating, calorie restriction, exercise addiction, and fat phobia

In the first two parts of this series, I shared my story of collecting thoughts, beliefs, and experiences that were centered around an obsession to find myself in a smaller body. In part three, I’m opening up about the beginning of the healing process, including:

  • how I searched my history and re-labelled my experiences in a way that would support a journey of food freedom and body acceptance
  • the resistance I felt at first when confronted with new information that felt like a threat to everything I had previously believed about health, food, exercise, well-being, and self-love
  • and the big takeaways from the 8-10 week program I did with a coach, which kick-started this whole healing process

This episode is not designed to replace the real work that happens when you’re working with someone who is trained in this arena. I only aim to share my experiences, knowing that I would have loved to hear about someone else’s story in more detail than what could ever show up in a testimonial on a sales page.

You will LOVE this guest episode with Amanda Smith, founder of The Dallas Girl Gang, an inclusive global community for women in business that is the OPPOSITE of mean girls culture. (Legit, their slogan is “you CAN sit with us” lol.)

In this interview Amanda and I recall our first (& kinda negative) experiences with networking in the small business community, and we reflect on where the industry has shifted since then. For Amanda, what started as a simple Facebook group and a few dates in Eventbrite, would soon turn into a MASSIVE community and a high-end event business. (Don’t worry, I ask a lot of questions about how she got from there to here.)

It is so important to find a group of people who can champion you as you embark on the tough stuff that entrepreneurship holds. You can do it alone, but you will get farther and have more fun along the way if you invite others in.

Trigger warning for this episode: mentions of dieting, weight loss, disordered eating, calorie restriction, exercise addiction, and fat phobia

Gaining weight, losing weight, starting a business, getting married, having children… the next part of the story has its ups and downs, and it’ll take you up to the point where I realized I was ready to QUIT dieting once and for all.

The healing process could really only begin once I felt broken enough in my eating, exercising, and body image, and that’s exactly what happened right before I reached out to get some help.

Trigger warning for this episode: mentions of dieting, weight loss, disordered eating, calorie restriction, exercise addiction, and fat phobia

In March of 2020, I broke up with diet culture once and for all. I was coming off of a 15 year obsession with restrictive dieting, although I didn’t see it like that at the time. I was exhausted from trying to change the size of my body year after year, and I knew that in order to give myself a different future, I needed help.

Since then, I have worked every day to heal my relationship with food, exercise, body image, and self-worth. The story is not complete, (actually it won’t ever be complete) but I am ready to share the beginning with you today.

This is part one in a larger series where I’ll be sharing my experiences. Please note, this podcast is not a replacement for one-on-one coaching with a professional. I can only speak to my story.

It's easy to let go of things that no longer serve you and your business -- but what about the things that ARE working, but just might not be aligned with where you see your future?

This episode is straight from the heart of my real experience with transitioning from one business to another. I'm using a hiking analogy in this episode to illustrate how it feels to achieve everything you ever dreamed of, only to question where you're headed next.

It's a must listen. You'll like it.

Have you ever heard the term “future stress?”

In this episode I’m talking about the moments of stress that didn’t serve me at the time and probably could have been avoided, and how you can start to recognize your own patterns of stress and stay in the present.

This ep also includes some thoughts about how to add little slivers of joy into your life, and why you should be really excited about the stuff that hasn’t even been invented yet. (Are you the 25% or the 75%... I need to know…)

A professional wedding photographer for 10 years who pivoted to an online education business. (Sound familiar?) Nope, it’s not me -- it’s today’s guest Shannon Vondy!

“If you have 10,000 people following you but they don’t really engage or think of you as somebody to buy from or use as an authority of any kind, it doesn't really matter.”

In this episode we’re talking about how to hack your mindset so that you value IMPACT and ENGAGEMENT over metrics and stats. We’re diving into how you would show up differently if you knew that the people who were hearing from you really wanted to be there -- because that’s where Shannon believes you’ll shine.

Plus, I ask Shannon about her transition from luxury wedding photographer to email marketing strategist. She recalls feeling forced to figure things out quickly, and how she didn’t immediately know what her “thing” would be. (Nod along with me, friend, I know you’ve felt that too.)

It’s a refreshing episode for any creative small business owner and you’ll walk away feeling inspired to move the needle in your business today.

Picture this episode like a sandwich, where the bread pieces are mildly interesting conversations about finding your purpose in the career that you choose, and the meats and cheeses in the middle are stories about the weird jobs that I’ve had since before high school. The mustard is the part where I realize I might have stalked a lovely couple on my suburban street after watching Harriet The Spy, and helped a used car dealer commit fraud.

It’s career day!

Bless that bottle of wine that sent me down a social media rabbit hole of looking up my childhood BFFs to see what they were up to… Because it brought me back to Chloe after TWENTY YEARS.

We have a shared piece of our childhood but completely different young adult and adult lives, so how did we BOTH end up being podcast hosts and 1:1 coaches? Maybe it was those fake TV shows we used to host with a hairbrush microphone in Chloe’s basement…

Childhood friendship aside, we’re digging into some of the mindset stuff you need in order to give yourself permission to succeed (in business, but also in life.) Chloe McKenzie is the host of the Start Right Now Podcast and I can’t wait for you to hear some of her thoughts on how to be in tune with your inner self while you grow.

One DM and I was on a spiral that almost cost me a bunch of cash and tons of time and energy, all because I couldn’t see that it was just an example of shiny object syndrome.

In today’s episode we’re talking about distractions: the good ones and the bad ones, and how to tell the difference.

How to filter out misplaced influence (I saw her doing that, so I have to!)

Why detours call our name (this is my fave part)

Why we’re looking for the best-kept secret to success when really we should stick to our path…

If re-writing your website IS on your path this year, I’ve got an amazing Masterclass called “Write Your Copy in 1 Hour” that will leave you feeling motivated AF to make some easy changes to your website that will help you STAND OUT in the other 19 tabs of your clients’ search.

YES, we're talking legal stuff, (like what contracts you need to run your small business and what clauses protect you in unpredictable issues) -- BUT, you don't need to freak out. Even if you're currently operating without a formal client agreement, this conversation won't make you feel shamed, judged, or rattled.

May this be the first truly approachable and entertaining conversation you hear about terms of use...

Today’s guest is Jaime Bell, a corporate lawyer who escaped the cubicle and started Contract Markets, which is a one-stop shop for small business owners in Canada who are looking for industry-specific legal templates!

We’re getting really specific in today’s episode about some of the terms you need to be aware of, what protection each business owner should have when it comes to their own content, and how to update your legal stuff in a Covid world! Don’t snooze on this ep, it’s SUPER valuable regardless of how established you are in your small business!

I was interviewed by a Trump supporter. Let’s talk about it.

Plain and simple, I should have turned down this interview. I should have done more research and asked tougher questions before giving a resounding “yes!” when presented with the opportunity.

But opportunity is a tough thing to navigate, especially when we are hard-wired to want to be liked, to not cause waves, and to have a seat at the “grown-ups” table in our industry. In today’s episode I’m sharing the story in hopes that it encourages you to do your own responsible research before accepting an opportunity that doesn’t align with your personal values.

We’re talking memes we like, and memes we don’t — specifically anything to do with throwing away 2021 when we’re only a week in. That energy isn’t welcome here, folks. Not gonna happen.

So this is me opening up a confetti cannon of good shit for the soul. Take what you need, and leave the rest. Pass it on. Let it sink in. And re-listen any time you need of reminder of how capable you are, my friend.

Did you see the tiktok where the guy knocks on the front door and says he’s the new you, ready to move into your place when the clock strikes midnight on New Years? It’s just one of the many “new year, new me” memes that I’ve been loving this year. Maybe because they’re hitting too close to home…

If you’re wondering what to do with all of your pent up optimism right now, this ep will help you channel it into a recipe that you can help you figure out what to work on next. While we don’t magically transform into the perfect versions of ourselves overnight, I do think there’s value in being optimistic when it comes to the lasting effects of our self improvement. (This coming from a girl who had a spin bike delivered on December 31st.)

We’re touching on self-worth, clarity, goal setting, and so much more in this long first episode of 2021. Happy New Year!

On one side: your thoughts, feelings, and experiences. On the other: the content you think your audience wants from you. It’s time to take out the divider and let those two worlds meet. In this ep we’re deep diving the key to content that will save you a ton of time AND inspire a deeper connection and trust between you and your following.

Life has been heavy. Business has been busy. Let’s bring some compassion to your headphones today with guest, Ashley Beaudin.

Ashley is a self-sabotage coach who is bringing her calming energy to the podcast today to talk about what it would mean to create a business that doesn’t leave you feeling burnt out and overwhelmed.

Slowness, gentleness, and intentionality are three buzzwords you’ll hear a lot, but Ashley is here to show us exactly how to put it into action. And yes, I know what you’re thinking — it IS possible to take action without getting lost in the hustle-spiral.

After recording this episode, I ran straight to my calendar to add a few much needed days off. Be warned: you might do the same.

Okay, so you’re ready to start thinking about pivoting or evolving your business in a new direction. But how do you even start?!

Maybe you’re looking to make a a slight shift… To start sharing more of WHO YOU ARE with your audience instead of only showcasing your portfolio, or to create a new kind of offer with a different piece of your expertise.

Or maybe you’re wanting to invent a totally new revenue stream altogether! Regardless, I’m sure you’ve got a lot of questions about how to proceed.

I’m bringing back one of my business BFFs, Mallory Rowan, to talk about all the hangups that get in our way when we’re trying to carve out a new path. (You might remember her from Episode 68!)

I can honestly think of no-one better to have this chat with, especially since Mal transitioned from a product based business in the fitness industry to an online education and coaching business! Talk about a massive shift.

Find out how she did it, how she stayed scrappy-AF, and listen in as she drops a ton of knowledge-bombs that will seriously make your life a lot easier if you’re in a similar boat. (Truuuust me, this episode is going to make you spring into action a lot sooner than you think.)

We’ve got some exciting things coming down the pipes in the coming weeks!

SAVE A SEAT AT THIS LIVE TRAINING:

Make sure you’ve saved a seat in the upcoming masterclass: “The Cash Kit Experience” where we share real and tangible strategies to diversify your income with an online digital product. That’s right, YOU are ready to create your first online course or digital offering and we’ll prove it.

Myself, Mallory Rowan, and Gemma Bonham-Carter are ready to show you the way. BTW: it’s 100% free!

I feel like Noah in the rain yelling “WHAT DO YOU WANT.”

2020 brought so much uncertainty and unpredictability. In this episode I’m looking into how those two things are making it difficult to set goals and intentions in 2021. You are not alone if you’re looking at the next year and thinking, “who KNOWS what it’ll bring for my business!”

We’ll explore a few important pieces of the puzzle, including how you can create some real confidence in your ability to grow, even if 2020 didn’t feel like a slam-dunk successful year, and how you can start to think outside the box for your own potential.

Plus, I’ve got some homework for you to do before you listen to the next episode. You’ve got this!

Decluttering one drawer never seems to be enough. Making one healthy meal doesn’t feel like enough. Posting one thing on social media that DOES align with your brand message feels like throwing a piece of spaghetti against the wall and hoping it sticks.

And that’s because of the “drop in the bucket” problem.

Join me for this episode about making progress on the things you KNOW you want, but for some reason leave you feeling eternally stuck. This episode is the second of a four-part series about setting intentions and goals for your small business. It comes with a serious mindset shift that I believe is SO important for achieving consistent growth.

This is the first episode in a four-part series about setting goals and intentions for your business growth. We’re going to kick things off by talking about RESISTANCE.

When you decide to enter an established and thriving industry, the natural pattern is to find an example of a business you’d love to have, and putter away at trying to replicate it. We’re going to talk about why you want to notice resistance and listen to your gut, so you can ultimately carve your own path and create the business of YOUR dreams.

From here, we’ll continue to add layers that will help you gain clarity about what lies ahead for you in the next 12 months. Stay with me, friend — we’ll make it fun.

Diving into the story of how I started my coaching business, exactly a year ago today. So much of the story is tied to the struggles than we all face, from imposter syndrome, to fear of the unknown, to a hesitation about how much hard work is involved.

I wrote this episode in hopes that you come away with the spark that reminds you that YOU. ARE. CAPABLE.

Everyone’s story will be different, this is mine. Take from it the things that are helpful and inspiration, and leave the rest — you are not alone, and I’m thankful that you’re along for the ride.

Two businesses, two kids, a handful of friends I love and adore, and a husband who I can’t seem to spend enough time with… even after 14 years together. I was attracted to self-employment to be FREE to enjoy these things, and to have control over my time, but without proper boundaries in place, work can easily edge its way in there and leave me burnt out and exhausted.

In today’s ep, I’m inviting you into my calendar to see how I organize my events, how I manage the workload, and how I fit in a life somewhere in the mix.

Lastly, we talk about the ways you can respect your boundaries after you implement them — a big key to a successful calendar system, if you ask me.

Let’s tackle what holding you back, starting with the limiting beliefs that keep you from owning your power! If you beat yourself up for not having a perfect business, or having ALL the answers — if you let that stuff stop you from taking the next steps, this episode will shake you out of it.

Normalize not having the answers, my friend. Because that’s what keeps you learning, and when you commit to continued learning you’ll always have something to give to others.

Fair warning: you might need to listen to this one twice.

BTW, I mention Episode 98 a few times during this recording. In Episode 98 I describe the Self-Coaching Model that Brooke Castillo created, i.e. thoughts, feelings, actions, results. If it’s been awhile, this one might need a second (or third) listen.

This episode is a hodgepodge discussion about business friendships — how to find them, how to nurture them, how NOT to handle a collab, how to protect your boundaries, how to protect your heart, and how to steer clear of things like jealousy, comparison, and guilt. This episode has it all.

Listen up, “You Might Not Like It” listeners, because this episode is important. What you see online isn’t the fully story, and the way you’re filling in the gaps of what you CAN see and what’s hidden… well, that’s flawed by nature.

I freaking love this episode about building a business with INTENTION.

I’m opening up about how I’m balancing one business that pays my bills, and another that I’m growing with a ton of patience and strategy. I am building a “career two” that lights me up inside, with a lifestyle that I know is suited for how I want to live the next 15+ years.

Don’t get it twisted… there’s a lot more to the story.

I’ve learned it is incredibly important to state, and restate, your values.

I am in full support of the Black Lives Matter movement.

I am doing the work behind the scenes to ensure that this podcast, my business, my coaching practise, and everything that falls under the brand, is a safe and inclusive space.

I’ve done my best to bring a conversation to this platform about how it feels to straddle the line between action and inaction.

Speaking up, or staying silent.

As it turns out, we have a LOT more options than just those two. Deciding how to respond as a business owner can be difficult, leading to challenging conversations and a great amount of discomfort. That said, it is nowhere near the level of difficulty or challenge that BIPOC have faced and continue to face now.

Today’s episode is a live recording of a talk I gave at Rise Mama’s Conference in May of 2020. I’m talking about discomfort and levelling up -- why they’re connected, how it means you're on the right track, and why I think you should change your mindset about the journey vs. the destination.

It’s a little rougher than the average podcast episode, being the live audio feed from a real event, but I hope you enjoy! I got a lot of really awesome feedback after this episode and I hope it helps you adjust to a new way of thinking about your business growth.

You’re counting down the days, you’re checking off the boxes…

Now imagine being told that it was impossible to gather in groups of more than 5 people.

We’re sitting down for an honest chat about about picking yourself up again and again, even when you’re dangerously close to throwing in the towel. Join Amanda and I for this inspirational episode about thriving during chaos!

This. Changed. EVERYTHING.

I’m going deep on the topic of how our THOUGHTS and FEELINGS dictate our ACTIONS and RESULTS. Specifically, how skipping straight to actions is really a bandaid on our problems. In this episode I’ll share my own experiences with willpower, and the action-based solutions I always go to first, and how they lead to inconsistent behaviour and a rollercoaster of highs and lows.

I want you to show up fully for this episode. Take it with you on a walk, for a workout, or in a prolonged moment of solitude. It works best when you have the mental clarity to connect the dots and see how this work can apply to your life.

Lastly, I’m leaving you with one simple piece of advice for tapping into a more permanent solution. In fact, it’s SO simple that I’m actually annoyed I didn’t start doing it sooner.

Simplicity needs to be your new BFF if you’re an over-complicator like me…

This episode dives into complications and imaginary hurdles you put in your own way, for a number of reasons. I’m talking about how to sniff them out, how to jump over or ignore them, and why you might want to get scrappy and creative with what you already have.

Ideas are great, and they’re what got you here in the first place. But simplicity is king and it might not come naturally for you. Here’s how we can fix it!

In today’s episode my husband, Ryan Kelly, is joining us for the first of his new book club series. In each episode, Ry will share the biggest takeaways from a business / entrepreneurial / self-development book of my choosing. The TLDR version is that he’s a super fast reader and I’m not, so I figured we could all benefit from his gifts.

In this first episode of the Ryan Kelly Book Club you’ll hear a review of “4 Hour Workweek” by Tim Ferriss. Timmy says we could all be doing a better job of reallocating our time to pursue either a business or our passions — more on that in this episode.

PLUS, a fun story from gym class.

If you want to read along with Ry (although this is legit the best book club ever because you don’t have to read the book…!) the next read is “Deep Work” by Cal Newport. Great name.

In an internet-heavy, content-rich world, it’s pretty tough for a content creator to “invent” something TOTALLY unique. We’re talking about a topic that many shy away from — the difference between copying and inspiration.

If there are “no new ideas,” how do we navigate the fine line between being inspired by someone we admire and replicating their work as our own?

I’m joined by repeat guest, Alyssa Beltempo, creator of the sustainable fashion YouTube channel, Ms. Beltempo (celebrating 82k subscribers and climbing!). In this episode we will:

  • unpack the subtle differences between copying vs. inspiration
  • share the importance of adding your own unique voice and personality in your art
  • offer simple solutions that prevent the possibility of copying someone else’s work
  • share tips for confronting or opening up the conversation with the other party
  • provide insight into a healthy mindset doesn’t sweat the small stuff

We aren’t born with an understanding of how to spend, earn, and save, so why is there so much judgement around the subject of personal finances? Desirae Odjick has made it her mission to be a supportive, welcoming, non-judgemental force through her writing on Half Banked.

If you think you’re “bad” at money, Des is happy to correct you!

In preparation for this episode I welcomed your questions via Instagram (@laurakelly.co) to ask during my interview with Desirae, and she’s answering them here! Today’s episode comes from a recent interview that I did for Natasha with Dear Darling Films, as part of an educational video series with women in the wedding industry.

In this interview we’re discussing:

  • The beginning of my photography business and how I built my brand into what it is today
  • Tips for new service-based business owners (professionalism, marketing, brand recognition, etc.)
  • How to go about choosing the RIGHT photo and video vendors for you (and the red flags to look out for!)

[UPDATE: This episode no longer reflects me. This episode is a piece of my history, it's a piece of the past, and I'm beyond grateful for the growth that has happened since I hit record on this one. I have recently completed a recovery program for the restrictive diets I've put my body through over the last 15 years, and I feel like a new person. That new me has NOTHING to do with an "after" photo. I will be releasing a new episode with the story of that transformation, and while at times I debated taking this episode down, I ultimately decided to leave it up as a piece of the story. More on that in a future ep!]

Original description for this episode:

It’s been a long time coming. For those of you who might not know, in the past year and a half I’ve lost about 60 pounds. But it’s not the first time in my life that I’ve done it…

This episode begins with an account of my complicated and lengthy history with food and exercise, including the period of my life where I obsessively counted every calorie I ate and tracked every minute on a workout machine to burn it off.

I’ve gone through two pregnancies, a few career changes, lots of random diets and workout programs, and many lifestyle adjustments, but my relationship with food and exercise remains a complicated one to this day.

And in the midst of so much conversation about the harmful effects of diet culture and body shaming, I felt called to create this episode which includes some of my personal realizations in the past few months that have lead me towards the healthiest year of my life so far.

I’ve learned so much about myself by looking back at some of my ingrained habits, my recurring patterns and emotional responses to life events, and I felt called to share them with you today in this episode.

It’s called The Weight Loss Episode, but it’s so much more.

This episode concludes with the mindset that I’ll be taking into 2020, complete with goals that look VERY different than my weight loss goals in the past.

This episode is inspired by a full day of learning at the Gem Conference event in Ottawa in January 2020, called The Vision Sessions. I was lucky enough to be a speaker and facilitator at the event, but also felt so called to create this episode which pours into all of my biggest takeaways from the hours I spent off-stage.

MASSIVE thanks to Lana Dingwall, Amanda Cockburn, Meghan Johnston, and Susan Richards for their teachings which lead to today’s episode about setting intentional goals that work for you and your business.

In this episode, I’m pouring into some thoughts about healthy vs. unhealthy goal setting, the mindset shift that helped me better understand my emotional response after failing to achieve a goal, and some insight into dreaming so big that you get laughed at — spoiler: that’s how you know you’re doing it right.

Enjoy and consider this a re-listenable episode because it is jam-freaking-packed with good stuff that you may need to hear a few times for it to really sink in. See you on the next ep! xo

You asked, we delivered. These are the crazy, dramatic, wild, awkward, and horrifying moments from over 20 years of combined experience in the wedding industry.

In order to bring the most juice (or tea, I should say…) I asked my friend and wedding-planning-partner-in-crime, Stacey Price from The Design Co., to join me as a guest for this episode. From McDoubles at dinner, to a flip-flop apocalypse, to inappropriate genitalia at a garden reception, this episode is sure to make you laugh out loud on the bus home from work.

Happy new year, my beautiful podcast listeners! Here’s to 2020 and all of the incredible content that I can’t wait to deliver to your headphones. All my love! xo

Ryan Kelly is my favourite person on the planet. And based on the sheer number of requests that he return to the podcast even though he failed his last challenge, I have to believe he’s one of your favourite guests, too.

On this episode, he endures a very unique punishment: taking the enneagram personality test and reading his results. We compare our very different types and test our compatibility! Plus, we get caught up on a wide range of topics including Amazon’s “subscribe and save” program, the new Star Wars movie, and our family’s stance on some asshole kid in kindergarten.

This episode is inspired by a recent coaching session and an exercise about the effect of our inner thoughts, particularly how they stop us from reaching out potential.

It is a case study that will absolutely cause you to think of your own internal thoughts in a new way — a must listen for anyone who owns a business, manages many things at once, suffers from imposter syndrome, and wants to overcome some inner feelings of unworthiness.

“I was a shell of who I knew I could be…”

Pia followed the steps to greater life happiness, right down the letter. She followed them all the way to a successful career, a fit bod, and a lifestyle that others would see from the outside as whole.

The only problem? It felt empty.

In this episode, Pia Beck (CEO of Curate Wellness Co.) is sharing the story of how she did everything she thought she should do, only to come up short. By slowing down with purpose, switching gears with intention, and pushing herself to share her unique gifts with the world, she was able to create a life that’s truly whole.

A life she loves.

A life where she’s “contributing at 100%.”

This episode is absolutely incredible — it’s a must add to your life, and pairs well with a long drive or a workout.

Everyone has a different recipe for their version of a “funk.” Mine is watching This Is Us and weeping into my fourth cup of coffee for the day. Maybe that’s yours too, in which case, can you believe Rebecca did that??? And isn’t Jack just the best!? (No spoilers, that’s basically the running commentary after every episode.)

Well, my funk / slump / phase is over. I’m a bright and shiny person again, and I’ve learned a few things along the way. Including:

  • even slow progress is still progress
  • rest might be exact what you need to prepare for the next “level up”
  • you can have support but still not be supported in the exact way you need
  • and that even naturally driven folks like myself can still benefit from having someone to push them even further

Yesterday I experienced a flood of energy (and not just because my lunch was loaded with superfoods). It was because I overcame a massive mental block that had been preventing me from seeing my own potential.

In this episode, we'll be exploring the differences between the surface blocks and the deeper subconscious blocks, both of which act as excuses that slow down your progress. Plus, we'll do a simple exercise to smash through those blocks and get on track to crush goals.

No one knows that more than Irina Popova, realtor for Blue Panda Realty in Ottawa. I was immediately drawn to how Irina weaves together her business and personal life on social media to provide value for her clients and promote her lifestyle brand.

On this episode we’re taking about using the tools we use to communicate to our clients that our offering is SO much more than what they might think (in our cases, real estate sales and wedding photography).

PLUS, I explain a social media exercise that changed the way I used social media for my business and you should absolutely spend the 3 minutes to do it for yours. xo!

We’re all out there looking for answers — ESPECIALLY from our gurus. We look to their success and try to build out the pieces to replicate it for ourselves.

We think we’re just one discovery away from the next big “secret” that’s going to skyrocket our businesses or iron out the kinks in our personal lives.

But when we find ourselves face to face with our industry leaders, asking them about what it is that set them apart from the rest, the answers are never as satisfying as we hope. It’s never a trick of the trade, but instead a reiteration of what we already know to be true:

  • work hard
  • focus your energy on what matters most
  • take exceptional care of your existing clients
  • do what you do well, and then do MORE of it
  • have patience
  • show consistency
  • and think big picture

This is the second of four recap episodes of the Gem Conference in Ottawa. Check out part one here!

Everyone’s talking about being authentic… being vulnerable…

But is it coming from a truly authentic and vulnerable place? Or are we just hopping on the band-wagon of what’s cool and trendy in personal branding?

Same goes for that girl you went to high school with who suddenly posts pics in her undies and shows off her stretch marks — is she part of the body positive movement because that’s REAL for her? Or just trying to ride the wave and take the express bus to 10k followers?

This episode is PART 1 of 4 takeaways of Gem Conference — it’s my way of sharing the valuable info that I bought home after meeting so many incredible creative entrepreneurs. If you were in attendance, consider it further discussion on something you’re already thinking about. If you weren’t, consider this your VIP ticket.

TOPICS INCLUDE:

  • the difference between “positioned” authenticity and genuine authenticity
  • the benefits of storytelling to build your personal brand
  • tips for building trust through your brand messaging
  • how to foster loyal customers who will pivot with you when you transition to your next project
  • the social responsibility we have when we share advice with others

You’re high on life after spending 14 hours at a conference and meeting 25 new people and learning from some seriously inspiring leaders in your industry — been there, my friend!

You’re also a little worried that the high is gonna wear off, and this episode is here to remind you of that very real truth: your regular life is coming for you, and it’s moving fast.

The buzz is already starting to wear off and the clock is ticking, but I have been crafting a very valuable post-conference routine that focuses on maximizing what it is you just learned and taking small steps to put that information into REAL action.

In this episode I’m talking about:

  • how to organize your notes so that you’ll actually want to go back and read them in the future
  • how to recognize when you really want to make a big change or whether you’re just “buying in” to what you’ve been taught
  • and why you should actually creep the girl who was beside you in the line for the burrito bowl

We just got back from a week in Orlando, Florida and I’m filled to the brim with realizations about making memories as a family and having a positive vacation mindset.

Ever hear those people at the airport bitching about how the lines are long and they didn’t get the seat they wanted or some other BS? Well those people suck at vacationing, and that’s SO not a cute look.

A few topics covered in this episode:

  • FACT: you actually get a say in how memories are stored in your brain, and it’s important to choose your words with intention
  • why I chose to leave my big camera at home on Disney day
  • what to ACTUALLY pack and bring into the parks
  • tips for making the most of a trip with young kiddos, from both Mom AND Dad’s perspective!
  • and my response to being told that we have a controversial parenting style

I surprised my husband with a series of questions sent in by his friends and family, and it makes for one of my very favourite episodes to date. From why he dreams of picking up roadkill, to his thoughts on social media and its influence on today’s youth, it’s both entertaining and informative.

Plus, one question in particular has him using his one and only chance to pass.

Everyone sorta thinks they’d have what it takes to run a super trendy and successful café, but do they really? I’m hanging out with Andy Basset, one half of the powerhouse brand: Little Victories Coffee. The dude is 23 years old and yet he’s been able to team up with the right people to create a “coffee lover’s paradise” that’s still as busy today as it was on their grand opening.

We go deep on the challenges of creating a specialty product, a retail space, and a wholesale business that’s seriously destined for a global takeover. But through it all, we’re talking about what it means to be humble, stay hungry, and never get lazy.

A few extra things to expect from this episode:

  • secrets for a successful launch
  • tips for building community within your business
  • how to get into the customer’s routine
  • work / life balance in the early does — does it exist?
  • relinquishing control in order to grow

We used to let the big networks tell us what to watch. At 7:00pm we watched this, at 8:00pm, that. They told us when to laugh and what should make us feel sad or stressed out. But welcome to 2019, where with platforms like Youtube and Instagram there’s no limit to what can be created and shared on a massive scale. So what effect does that have on a creator, when it’s no longer the networks who evaluate your worth, but the viewer?

I had the absolute pleasure of speaking with Stephanie Koenig, an actress living in LA who uses these platforms to make people laugh while she works her way to the big screen. This episode is proof that as long as you’re consistently connecting to your big picture goals, even just 1 hour a day is enough to make that shit happen.

By the way, when you’re finished listening to this episode, drop everything and watch every single second of Stephanie & Brian’s content, much of which is referenced in this episode:

When one door closes, another opens — isn’t that the quote we’ve heard a hundred times? Well it doesn’t make it any more bearable, that’s for sure.

We’re coming up to the two year anniversary of my biggest failure and I’m just now coming to terms with WHY it happened and HOW that closed door was really a hallway that I needed to explore in order to find myself exactly where I needed to be.

If you’ve ever made something and no one bought it, or written something that no one bothered to read, or if you’ve wanted something and didn’t get it — this episode is for you. Grab a coffee and hang out with me while I get super real and let it alllll hang out in this storytelling episode.

“It’s not magic, it’s science. But it feels really magical that I can affect my mood and what’s happening in my body by breathing differently…”

Meghan Johnston is passionate about living a healthy, holistic lifestyle that fills her soul not just physically, but mentally, emotionally, and spiritually. Meghan is also a certified yoga instructor with a MASSIVE knowledge of the inner workings of the body and mind.

I’ve been picking up insightful nuggets in her 8:20pm yin yoga class for the last year or so, but this episode is a concentrated dose designed to help fill in some of the gaps in your knowledge of mindset, meditation, and the physical effects of stillness and rest.

Is it too much to ask that every customer also has a personal connection to the brand? Jacquie doesn’t think so, and I dare you to listen to this episode and then second guess whether she’s going to take over the entire world…

This is an all-time favourite episode because it speaks right to the heart of anyone with a big dream and a go-getter attitude. I have pulled so much inspiration from Jacquie K’s perspective on everything from personal branding, to comparison, to continuing to seek out education long after you become an “expert,” and owning your imperfections in a way that pushes you forward instead of holding you back.

If I could describe her in one single emoji, it would be a lighting bolt. It is a true gift that her insight can be shared in this format, and it brings me peace knowing you will be truly empowered after listening.

It’s 30 days worth of celebrity gossip in a single episode and that should be all the info you’ll need to hit play.

Someone pour the tea because we’re talking big news including a Hollywood proposal, a photoshop scandal, a slanderous documentary, an alleged affair between bandmates, PLUS — someone got a hamster and it was trending on twitter for 3 days.

It’s everything you need if what you need happens to be a laugh and a reference to a very minor character in Bring It On.

Social media is a killer tool, especially when you’re using it to grow your online business and brand. But what happens when you start seeing those red notification bubbles as a measure of your self-worth?

In this ep I’m talking about what’s at risk when we allow ourselves to be measured by the arbitrary metrics (like a follower count!), specifically how it leads us to feel lonely, unsuccessful, unworthy, and depressed.

But not to worry! I’ve got 10 STRATEGIES that will help pull you away from the hypnotizing blue light and find more value and self-worth outside of the screen!

After a textbook pregnancy that ended with a dramatic rush to the hospital just in time for the delivery, Evelyn Joy entered the world and joined our family. The rush of adrenaline and excitement would quickly turn to quiet, as this became the moment that Scott and Rebecca Hurren would discover that their beautiful daughter was showing signs of Down Syndrome.

Looking back to that day in 2012 we now know it was the beginning of an entirely different path, one that couldn’t be planned, envisioned, or controlled. On the day of this episode’s release, we are celebrating World Down Syndrome Day, and I could think of no better opportunity for my brother, Scott Hurren, to share their story that started with discovery and continues today with gratitude and eternal optimism.

Call it a curveball, or call it an opportunity for a greater love — either way Scott and Rebecca were handpicked for this life, and they’re seizing every single moment along the way.

Shannon Kennedy, principle planner at Kennedy Event Planning, believes that the universe has a sense of humour. Every few years, it seems, she is tested. When one piece of the puzzle clicks together, another turns to ashes, creating the constant ebb and flow that ultimately became the foundation for the strong and determined woman she is today.

After a life-altering breakup with $65 in her bank account, Shannon was forced to rebuild her life and find herself in the process. In this episode she shares the raw and real story of how owning a business is a lot like having a long term relationship. She reminds us that success looks different at various stages of adulthood, and only by testing yourself can you grow and evolve into the person you were truly meant to be.

Perseverance. Dedication. Strength.

“SHIT. I forgot about Pinterest. Time to spend 12 hours re-organizing and re-arranging everything and be a master pinning marketing machine and make ten thousand dollars this month…”

Sound familiar? I am a self-proclaimed batch work junkie. I get stuck in the rabbit hole and spend WAY too much time working ultra-focused but without a plan. But everything we know about social media marketing tells us that consistent behaviour trumps content “dumps” a million times over. So I’ve started implementing a tending list, a list of small tasks that require daily or at least regular attention, to save me from the dreaded hit-it-and-quit-it workflow that comes to me naturally.

Take those thumbs and put them to use STRATEGICALLY, folks. A tending list might be just the thing you need to get better traction in your business so that you have more time to spend working on your craft.

Kristine Aletha is a certified life coach with over 15 years of experience in mental health. We had the privilege of meeting at a life changing conference back in 2013 called Making Things Happen. Since then, we’ve both been on a journey to accomplish our big, scary, bold dreams while growing our families and tending to our businesses.

In this episode we’re talking about REAL and PRACTICAL steps to break free from the fears that hold us back, accepting ourselves as we are while making changes that get us closer to our goals. It sounds like a lot to jam into one hour, but Kristine demonstrates how BIG changes can be broken down into bite-sized pieces.

“Your thoughts drive your feelings, which drive your actions.” This episode is a gift that you can give to yourself if you’ve ever let fear hold you back from pursuing a big goal. It IS possible to change your life — and it starts from the inside.

When it comes to Instagram if it looks too good to be true, it might just be. The power of having a cohesive presence on social media is undeniable, which has resulted in a massive spike in the use of stock photography. That’s right, folks are actually PAYING for a collection of images to make their homes, their offices, and their lives look ready for the ‘gram.

When used properly stock photos can heighten your brand and elevate your web content, but in this episode I’m exploring the dangers of overusing stock photography and creating a false image that puts your credibility at risk.

I’m also sharing my advice for learning to share photos that don’t belong to you with confidence. There are SO many incredible resources out there just waiting to be used to help grow your brand. If fear of sharing incorrectly is holding you back, this episode is just what you need: a BS-free etiquette guide to sharing photos that you didn’t take, WITHOUT compromising your integrity.

With four kids and two businesses you can imagine Brittany West, owner of Gloss Events & Decor and Sip Beverage Bike, as a professional juggler just trying to keep every ball up in the air. Thing is, you’ll never see her sweat. She may repack Lunchables into a bento box on Monday mornings and have 9 baskets of laundry in the queue, but in the West household, making magical memories is just a few steps higher than chores on the list of priorities.

Plus, I drink my very first bulletproof coffee and catch up with Brittany on how the ketogenic diet is working for her!

This episode is an easy-listen; it’s basically an eavesdropped coffee date between two women who love nothing more than finding the best of both worlds. The glitter, if you will, and the sweatpants.

We’re going back in time together for this episode, back to those first few years of starting my own business as a wedding photographer. It’s not so glamourous when you’ve got 3 page views on every blog post and a big dream ahead that seems a million miles away. And then when one asshole on Facebook tells you you’d make more money flipping burgers than picking up a camera, you can either let the words destroy you, or use them as your fuel to craft a story of success.

Join me over coffee for episode 17 and we’ll go back to a time that’s equally dark, challenging, pivotal, and magical — a time I’m calling “The Groupon Era.”

Warning: we are NOT drinking coffee during this recording. Things get a little wild as Yvonne Langen and I discuss everything from dating on Tinder, healing from a difficult breakup, the latest trends in cocktails, and taking pleasure in challenges and struggles — even our favourite Cardi B lyrics.

Yvonne is the creator of Taste & Tipple, a blog that celebrates a large appetite for pleasure. It’s not vegan, it’s not keto, it’s not raw or restricted in any way — instead, it’s a place for food and drink that glorifies a lust for life. And as it turns out, Yvonne brings this spirit into every aspect of her highly curated life.

Join us for a drink and listen in on this very candid and entertaining discussion!

When I had the opportunity to stand face to face with Gary Vaynerchuk and ask him one question, I chose one that I already knew the answer to. I realized shortly after, that I was letting one person’s opinion hold far too much power over my actions. This person’s comment became the physical voice for an internal fear that was buried a few layers beneath the surface. ‘

I have a weird feeling I’ll find myself standing face to face with Gary again at some point in my life. And the next time I do, I’ll be in the driver’s seat.

Don’t mind the salty title, this episode has a wholesome message about learning to be intentional with every minute in your day. After a major lifestyle adjustment where I ended up losing 15 working hours a week, I was FORCED to examine the use of my time in a way that resulted in some major efficiencies. And when it came to obligations, I started noticing that they were born out of a fear of being judged and disliked.

In this unabashedly honest episode, I’m talking about the power of saying no, and what it really feels like to take selfish care of your star player.

Call it basic, but I’m doing what everyone else in January of 2019 is doing: watching that new show on Netflix called “Tidying Up.” Before I knew it I was going through every drawer / cupboard / closet, tackling the clutter and feeling oh-so-good in the process.

That natural high of productivity made it easy to tackle the next 10 things on my to do list, which had me wondering: “are all actions contagious?”

Stick around after this episode (12:13) for an announcement about something you can expect to hear more of in 2019, featuring an appearance by someone very special!

When you accept that every moment in life is a teachable one, that every disappointment and every curveball is an opportunity for you to move and grow and change — Scott Hurren would say that’s the day you become free. An understanding of divine intervention will always be just slightly out of grasp, but it’s a journey that leads to fulfillment.

In this first introduction to my older, wiser, and more eccentric brother, Scott and I look back on our most pivotal moments and the unusual patterns that appear as signs of some greater plan.

Although our businesses couldn’t be more different, it’s a similar type of strength, dedication, and creativity that flows through our veins and encourages us to think outside the box.

This mini episode is a love note to your soul if you ever feel frustrated that you’re not growing fast enough. You’re not alone.

It’s the part of your brain that tells you you’ll never catch up, that other people have momentum and you’re just plugging away at a snail’s pace. But that part of you is also what makes you HUSTLE, what keeps you pushing forward. That part of your brain needs to be fed and it’s craving jealousy and comparison, making you question whether you’ve made any progress at all.

You have the power to instead feed it with constant reminders that you’re in the right place, right now. That you’re doing enough. That every step is one step closer to your goal. And the best part of all, this whole illusion of being “behind,” is just that: an illusion.

I refer to this as the worst introduction I’ve ever received. It was comprised of a not-so-humble brag fest with a side order of passive aggressive jabs, and it came from a total stranger and in under 3 minutes. Like a slow motion bullet it just kept coming and coming until I found myself bleeding out and wondering how I even got here in the first place.

I call her Karen, but I don’t really know her name. It didn’t come up as she tried to sell me on her lifestyle and success while kicking me in the gut with a polite smile and chipper attitude. There’s a lesson in here, folks, and it’s not just how to avoid being an asshole in the first 3 minutes of meeting someone. It’s about getting in touch with the inner self, the part of you that deems you worthy enough to not constantly seek praise and approval from others.

It’s essentially a continuation on "Episode 07 - We’re All Just a Bunch of Socially Paranoid Freaks," and if you’re Karen, you might not like it.

If being “real” is a 2018 buzzword, Chantsy is the real deal. None of this “perfectly real” bullshit, this girl cuts right to the heart of what it means to be authentic, sharing her vulnerabilities, her imperfections, and her struggles with shopping in a skinny girl’s world. Maybe you know her, maybe you don’t, but after this episode you’ll be one step closer to being able to answer the question, “how does she fit it all in?!”

It was such a pleasure to share coffee with Chantal Sarkisian, AKA Chantsy, curvy fashion blogger and social media influencer in Ottawa, Canada. Together we hash out everything from how to manage the business side of being an influencer, how to avoid the inevitable comparison that comes from living in a social media world, and how to find confidence in all the beautiful things that each of us unique. Chantsy claims she’s not the most creative person in the biz, but she makes up for it with constant determination and the consistency of showing up and loving the journey.

This ep is both a kick in the business pants and a warm hug for your heart, if you can believe it. I can’t wait to see how this chat lights you up from the inside out. Enjoy!! xo

Good news, you’re not a weirdo. Turns out we’re all just a bunch of socially paranoid freaks and it’s in our biological makeup. In light of this news, you may as well decide to have the most fun in any given situation, not worrying about those pesky things called judgement or embarrassment.

This episode pulls inspiration from this article: https://lifehacker.com/taming-the-mammoth-why-you-should-stop-caring-what-oth-1628033209, as a way to remind you that no one really cares what you do, which is probably the best kept secret of the socially-awkward brain.

A one-way flight across the world, a complete culture shock, and a fork in the road… Kristen dances her way through life weaving together a story of love, romance, and enlightenment. And once her vacation is over, she finds a way to add that magic into her regular life.

As with any self-improvement strategies, it’s a work in progress. But this dreamer manages to turn up the volume on positivity, turn a bad day into a good one, and find beauty in knowing that sometimes the scariest decisions are the most pivotal to the journey of self-discovery.

Taking time to share coffee with Kristen Hooper is one of my very favourite things to do, and always results in that tingly, happy feeling of being somewhere between inspired and utterly content.

I’m excited to bring a little bit of her light and positivity into the podcast — you’re in for a treat.

I get it - you’re a go-getter! A hustler! It’s in your blood to search out that win whether it’s big or small. You decided you wanted something and you took the steps to actually achieve it. But what happens after that "W" is yours? Do you take time to soak it in, pat yourself on the back for your hard work and truly bask in the moment? Or do you glaze over it, onto bigger and better things…

This one’s for you if you could be a little kinder to yourself on the journey, spending less time on “what’s next?” and more delighting in that state of being proud.

This mini episode is meant to be a pep talk for the soul, from my heart to yours. Take it with you wherever you go — I hope it inspires something beautiful within.

When a mistake is made, it’s how you handle it that defines you. And when it might seem comfortable to wear your reasons or excuses like armour, in fact what will make your business stronger is to do the exact opposite: to take the hit and accept that something in the system broke down and that it was your fault.

In this episode I’m sharing a real and recent experience from a client who was hurt when her wedding was not featured on the blog. My excuse? The blog is a marketing tool that I use strategically to grow my business in a meaningful way. The only problem with that, is that to her I’m not a marketing machine, I’m a person. And the inability to anticipate her emotional attachment to my actions resulted in her feeling insecure and judged.

My hope in being so candid with this episode, is that it will shed light on a possible blindspot in your business, and possibly prevent a similar situation from ever happening.
