Welcome!

Here we go then – our first ever fully live 'normal' TPS episode.

This is the audio taken from our video here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iYHAOxXrdDY

Why are we doing this? Erm, truthfully because we've run out of edit windows this week, so it's either this or no show.

On a more positive note, we're big believers that from adversity comes opportunity. We REALLY want to do more live stuff, so let's do it.

PLEASE NOTE:

There will be NO SUPERCHAT and NO LIVE QUESTIONS OR COMMENTS - we just can't keep on top of them. It's just a straight TPS episode, but done live instead of recorded and edited.

Thanks for being with us!

Contrary to folklore, Dan and I don’t spend our entire lives trying out new pedals. That means there are a whole plethora of smaller brands and makers out there about whom we know very little. This is a format we’re trying out in order to address that, featuring five makers who we think deserve more attention. Yes, you may well be intimately knowledgable about their wares, but not everyone will. You get the idea… The five we have chose are listen below – enjoy the show!

We compare an original Roland RE-201 Space Echo with the RE-20 pedal, Strymon Volante and EchoFix EF-X2.

Life too short for long YouTube videos? Please see the ‘Interesting bits and go-to sections’ information below.

Welcome to the episode. A little while back, Dan and I did a video on single-head tape delays based on our love of the Echoplex sound. You can watch it here: https://youtu.be/iDdK8QMcF2I Now it’s the turn of the multi-head tape machine, specifically the classic Roland RE-201 Space Echo that debuted all the way back in 1974. We have some simple questions… How much does the old, analogue RE-201 sound like the ‘new’ RE-20 digital pedal? What about the EchoFix and the Strymon Volante? Can Dan put together a Heath-Robinson pedalboard that simulates what a multi-head tape delay does? Let’s do this – enjoy the episode!

We choose four pedals for each other while playing each other’s main guitar and amp. What could possibly go right?

This is the audio from our video here: https://youtu.be/DId9REw5pPk

Welcome to the show. Regular viewers will know that Dan and I both have a strong 'home' when it comes to our main guitars and amps. In Dan’s case it’s a Fender Telecaster and his Matchless C30 amp. For me it’s a Stratocaster and my Two Rock Classic Reverb Signature. People have been asking how we might fare playing each other’s main gear… so that's what we're doing. And just to make it more interesting, we also choose four pedals for one another that will hopefully challenge and inspire in equal measure. Join us as we go through the selection process and skate out on to the thin ice of each other’s gear.

Some people barely use their guitar’s controls all, yet they can unlock a smörgåsbord of extra sounds. We explore 12 things to try on a selection of classic-style electric guitars.

Welcome to the show! In this episode Dan and I begin to unpack the suitcase full of sounds that are just waiting to be found, right there in your guitar. Countless great players down the ages have used their volume, tone and pickup selector switches to coax unique tones and textures from the instrument – it’s less expensive and much easier to access than yet another new bit of gear! Please join us, grab your guitar and give them a try. Enjoy the episode!

Salutations! This was a live Viewers Comments & Questions stream from 6 April 2020.

We’re still in Covid-19 lockdown, so Dan is on a screen and I’m (the only person) in the studio. Apart from Katherine. But we live together so that’s okay.

Welcome! In this episode we are delighted to welcome our old mucker, Rabea Massaad back to the show. Not only is Rabea genuinely among the best humans we know, he’s also a truly gifted, creative and inspirational musician. Rabea uses TheGigRig G2 at the heart of his live pedalboard for his band, Toska… but the whole board was in need of an update, rewire and refresh.

Time to get to work Dan… Rabea plays through the Toska track ‘Prayermonger’ at the end of the show. He literally stood there and played the guitar parts over a backing track. We watched totally agog!

Please check out Toska’s music: https://www.toska.tv/

COVID 19: Before you lambast us for not socially excluding, read this… This video was filmed before the UK lockdown measures. As I explain in the intro, Rabea was on his way to us when the UK government started making noises about being careful about travel around March 16/17. The actual instruction to stay at home did not come until March 23 in the UK. As of that date, we have been working from home and self-isolating in accordance with the government instruction and advice.

Why do tape delay machines sound sooooo good? It’s a question we are delving into over a series of shows. We kick off with our personal favourite REAL TAPE machines. Erm, our only machines, in fact.

Life too short for long YouTube videos? Please see the ‘Interesting bits and go-to sections’ information below.

COVID-19: This video was filmed long before the social distancing measures were advised by various governments across the world. Rest assured that all of us at That Pedal Show began observing social distancing and stay-at-home measures as soon as they were announced. Be well y’all!

There’s just something magic about tape echo. Be it an Echoplex, Space Echo, Copicat or what have you, that – literally – magnetic blend of warmth and often idiosyncratic unpredictability is what puts the tear in your eye and the emptiness in your wallet. Both Dan and I have been on a voyage of tape discovery these past months; smitten by the sounds, maddened by the maintenance and confused at the question of why modern pedal simulations just don’t stand up. Or do they? So in this first instalment of (probably) three, we indulge in the tape machines themselves. Consider it a context setting siting lap of what’s to come. In Part 2 we will delve a little more deeply into the single-head Echoplex side of things and a bunch of modern pedals, then follow that up in Part 3 with a similar treatment of the multi-head Space Echo approach. No, we haven’t looked at the European-style Wems/Meazzis etc… maybe that’s one for the future. At present we don’t own any. Off we go then… please enjoy the episode!

We visit Macaris in London, home of the world-changing Tone Bender fuzz box to listen to some original pedals and find out how it all came to be. We’re delighted to be joined by Josh Scott of JHS Pedals.

Life too short for long YouTube videos? Please see the ‘Interesting bits and go-to sections’ information below.

Welcome! Please subscribe! We’ve been wanting to do this for ages. Dan and I have both talked with Anthony Macari in recent years about visiting the famous family music store in London’s West End to do a show on the music-changing Tone Bender pedals that originated there in 1965. Macaris and the Tone Bender were right at the heart of the birth of fuzz as it stumbled, spluttered and eventually roared into rock and pop music. Music would never be the same again! Fast forward a year or two and our great friend Josh Scott from JHS Pedals sent us a mail saying he’d be in London so we should hang out and maybe do something. Boom. All the guitars, amps and pedals used are listed below. Enjoy the episode!

MASSIVE thanks to Anthony and the team at Macaris for giving up the bottom floor of their store, and of course for letting us play with these vintage gems! http://www.macaris.co.uk/

Thanks too to Josh and the JHS Pedals team for their help with this video. Please check out their awesome YouTube shows. https://www.thejhsshow.com/episodes

We welcome Zach Broyles of Mythos Pedals from Nashville, Tennessee to chat about how he got into the industry, his build methods and of course hear some great tones from the Susmaryosep!, Lark, Chupacabra and more…

Life too short for long YouTube videos? Please see the ‘Interesting bits and go-to sections’ information below.

Dan and I are delighted to welcome Zach Broyles to the show, founder and owner of Mythos Pedals. The brand is a relative newcomer to the pedal world, yet in the few short years he’s been up and trading, Zach has built a great reputation for quality and tone. In this video we talk about how he got into the business; his previous job at Carter Vintage Guitars and of course his approach to building pedals. We also get a listen to his two latest pedals; the RJ Ronquillo Susmaryosep! and a prototype of the Rhett Shull Lark… among others. Massive thanks to Zach for making time during his vacation to come in and chat. We’re looking forward to the return visit to Nashville!

Welcome to the show! In this episode, Daniel and I run through some classic effects pairings: two effect types that go together like peas and carrots. Bacon and eggs. Erm, op amps and clipping diodes?

Anyway, no doubt there are many many more, but we’ll kick you off with these 11 to get you thinking and perhaps spark some ideas of your own. We’re doing this because it might not be immediately obvious that combinations of effects can be really cool; moreover that you can create some really lovely sounds without having to own every pedal under the sun.

Please remember that we’re talking more about effects types than specific pedals here, so don’t worry if you don’t have the exact pedals: another of the same type will get you there!

Enjoy the episode!

You want a wet/dry rig, but you’re not sure what amps will work well together? And what about power, gain, phase and digital latency? We answer all that and more….

Life too short for long YouTube videos? Please see the ‘Interesting bits and go-to sections’ information below.

Welcome to the show! In this episode, Dan and I return to one of our favourite subjects: wet/dry guitar rigs. Definitions differ as to what wet/dry actually means, but for us it is this:

First off, you are using two separate guitar amplifiers… Compression, boost, EQ, wah, overdrive, fuzz (all the ‘dry’ effects) go to both amps. Modulation, delay and reverb (all the ‘wet’ effects) only goes to one amp: we call this the wet amp. The amp that doesn’t get the ‘wet’ effects we call the dry amp.

It’s pretty simple in theory, but you need to be aware of a bunch of things when choosing your two amps such as volume, gain, phase and (related to phase), digital latency. There’s EQ as well of course, but that’s really a matter of personal preference and taste so we're not getting into it here.

In this video we use a fairly standard signal path… Guitar, overdrives, modulation, delay, reverb, tremolo, amps

Viewed as the wet/dry signal path it’s this (sorry we can’t draw a diagram here, but let’s try text…) DRY SIDE: Guitar, overdrives, SPLIT (Humdinger) to Amp 1 WET SIDE: Guitar, overdrives, SPLIT (Humdinger), chorus, delay, reverb, trem to Amp 2

Hopefully that explains it!

Enjoy the episode.

Many amps have separate clean and overdrive channels. We discuss how the sounds differ when you use your pedals with them, including using the effects loops.

Life too short for long YouTube videos? Please see the ‘Interesting bits and go-to sections’ information below.

Hello folks, sorry this one is late – we had some gremlins in the system that made the edit corrupted, so it had to be fixed. We got there in the end.

Welcome to the show! In this episode, Dan and I demonstrate what happens when you use common effects pedal types – boost, overdrive, modulation, delay/reverb – into the clean and dirty channels of your guitar amplifier. We also touch on the effects loop section of your amp and why you may or may not want to use that.

Now, clearly there’s quite a bit of latitude in what we might call ‘overdrive’. In this case we’re using a mid-gained overdrive texture for our 'dirty' channel. The more gained you go, the more marked differences you will hear between clean and dirty channels in terms of how your effects react.

For anyone wanting more on FX loops in general including stuff like the Four Cable Method (that Dan is basically using to patch the amp's preamp into G2), that is for another day - we'll dedicate a whole show to it.

Meantime, there are on-screen graphics to explain what's going on, but if you're still confused… The effects order is as follows: Guitar, Boost, D&M Drive, Jam Ripply Fall, Maxon AD-9, Source Audio Collider, Amp

Now look at the top row of G2. The four labels that start with ‘Preamp…’ refer to where the amp’s FX loop is sitting in the signal chain. When the red light is lit under…

• Preamp After Drives: this means the boost and D&M Drive are hitting the amp preamp. ALL other effects are in the amp effects loop.

• Preamp After Ripply Fall: Boost, D&M, Ripply Fall in the front, Delays in the amp effects loop

• Preamp After Analogue Delay: Boost, D&M, Ripply Fall and Maxon AD-9 in the front of the amp, Source Audio Collider in the amp effects loop

• Preamp After Everything: Everything in the front of the amp, nothing in the effects loop.

We hope that helps!

Enjoy the episode.

We demonstrate 10 ways to use reverb effects pedals for electric guitar to inspire new sounds and creativity in your playing.

Life too short for long YouTube videos? Please see the ‘Interesting bits and go-to sections’ information below.

Reverb: pretty much the oldest effect in the book. It’s the sound of space, packed into a handy-sized box that can take your guitar from flat and direct, to colossal and cavernous! There was a time, not so long ago, that reverb for guitarists was that mysterious knob on your amp that you simply set to ‘not too much’. The last decade however has seen a veritable tidal wave of reverb pedals, offering us ever new ways to wash our tones clean… or dirty. Most of us are still confused. So join us as we run through 10 ideas designed to get you vibing on verb.

We show you 10 great ways to use boost pedals with your guitar amp and pedals… and discover the boosts you never knew you had!

Life too short for long YouTube videos? Please see the ‘Interesting bits and go-to sections’ information below.

Welcome to the show! In this episode, Dan and I go through 10 ways to approach the ‘humble’ boost pedal in your signal chain. To most of us, boost simply means ‘more’ but it’s where you place the ‘more’ that makes such a huge difference in texture, tone and feel. Do you want more overdrive, more volume, more compression or a different EQ? Or less of all the above? It’s all possible with this simple addition to your rig, as we discover…

Do you struggle to get usable sounds from fuzz pedals? Fear not – we take you through 10 things to try in order to find fun and inspiration from fuzz!

Life too short for long YouTube videos? Please see the ‘Interesting bits and go-to sections’ information below.

A warm welcome to you, sonic voyagers! This fine day we are minded to ask: is there a guitar effect more divisive than fuzz? That beautiful behemoth onslaught of savage square wave so beloved of noisemongers since the mid-1960s… or is it the wanton wrecking of all that is magnificent and majestic on our sacred six-string?

Whatever your position, we hope this video will offer some ideas with which you can go forth and fuzzify.

Life too short for long YouTube videos? Please see the ‘Interesting bits and go-to sections’ information below.

This is a show for the echoically confused among you. You’re either new to delay or you’ve been using it for a while without really understanding what you’re doing. The latter was me about five years ago (Mick here). Dan’s in-utero scans, meanwhile, show the distinct outline of a Deluxe Memory Man: he was basically born at 300ms and seriously modulated. Ahem. In this episode we explain and demonstrate the main delay/echo foodgroups down the years and how they may, or may not, suit your intended musical application. Please note that this is NOT Chapter & Verse On All Things Delay, Ever (for example we don’t get into stereo delays, effects loops, pedalboard positioning and a bunch of other stuff). Moreover it is a tonal primer for anybody looking to narrow their search, or at least to provide you with some better questions on the quest for that ever evasive echo. Well not so ever any more: you’ve got a problem, nobody else can help and you’ve found (wait for it) The Delay Team, Team, Team, Team, Team, Te… Oh lordy, apologies. Right, enjoy the episode!

A note on signal chain: All the delays you hear in this episode are into the front of fairly high headroom amps set clean-ish. Overdrive pedals are placed before the delays as per the ‘standard’ order. If you use a gainy amp, you may well prefer the sound of your delay in the amp effects loop. Especially digital delays.

We try out the new cabinets in Universal Audio’s OX firmware update (November 2019), crank our 1973 Hiwatt DR103 and catch up with our old friend Tore Mogensen, formerly of TC Electronic

Life too short for long YouTube videos? Please see the ‘Interesting bits and go-to sections’ information below.

Welcome! Regular viewers will know that Dan and I are deeply smitten with Universal Audio’s range of audio interfaces and plug-ins for recording: truly fantastic stuff that has powered TPS for around two years now. UA is also behind the much loved OX Box, a reactive load attenuator and speaker/cab/mic simulation software application for your valve amp. Dan and I went to Real World Studios to make some actual music with it when it came out. Check it out: https://youtu.be/g5Ly5O2MjfY

And we made two tracks: Mick – https://youtu.be/HepnOBCsRs0 and Dan – https://youtu.be/rBLUJzYg-U8

Late in 2019 UA announced a firmware update for OX, adding some much requested Celestion Vintage 30 cabinets and a couple of other cool things. Even better, our old chum Tore Mogensen (formerly of TC Electronic) has finished his first year as a product manager at UA, so took the opportunity to drop in and walk us through it.

In the OX bits for the main bulk of the show, you’re hearing the OX direct output only. No actual mics or speakers. At the end of the show when we crank the Hiwatt, that’s the actual mic’d cabinet in the room.

Enjoy the episode!

New to looper pedals? We talk about their basic functionality, problems with timing and rhythm, position in the signal chain and dip a toe into more creative applications.

Life too short for long YouTube videos? Please see the ‘Interesting bits and go-to sections’ information below.

Welcome! In this episode, Dan and I take a newbie’s approach to looping. We are not experts in this, so we walk through their basic functionality and address some questions you may have surrounding timing and signal chain positioning. We also introduce the concept of adding rhythm loops via a slightly more complex pedal. Please note this isn’t a looping masterclass, or how to create those amazing multi-layered performance pieces – we’ll get somebody in for that down the line.

A note on the signal routing for the Boss RC-10R… The RC-10R has stereo ins and outs. You can configure the outputs in other ways too. For this show we had the guitar loop (output A) going to the guitar amps in our studio, while the rhythm pattern (output B) were sent to a full-range powered PA speaker… because they sound pretty pants into a guitar amp to be honest. To see the full signal routing options head to Boss’s site and ingest: https://www.boss.info/uk/products/rc-10r/

TheGigRig Humdinger is there because we were getting a ground loop issue with the RC10-R’s rhythm track into the EV powered PA speaker.

Enjoy the episode!

We challenge each other to put together a whole guitar rig on a small budget – one guitar, one amp and three pedals on a board. What do we choose and who wins?

Life too short for long YouTube videos? Please see the ‘Interesting bits and go-to sections’ information below.

Yep, it’s come to this. We’ve finally succumbed to the ravages of clickbait-driven populist drivel… and made a very long, discursive, in-depth video again. Ha! But at least this one features some cheap gear for a change. ‘Don’t you mean ‘affordable’, Michael?’ No, we mean CHEAP. Cheaper than chips. The cheapest chips in town. Erm, and some slightly less cheap and much tastier ones too. There are some exceptional sounds today, and some to which we take exception. There’s a lot of hiss, a bit of pish but I’ve run out of alliterative ideas so I’ll finish with tish, fish McNish. Come on, make a wish.

Final scores on the doors were: Mick’s rig: £1,034 – not £900 like he said at the end of the video Dan’s rig: £466 – not £360 like he said at the end of the video.

Where should you place your reverb, delay and modulation effects pedals in relation to overdrive and distortion? We look at the options to help you decide.

Life too short for long YouTube videos? Please see the ‘Interesting bits and go-to sections’ information below.

In this episode we challenge the commonly accepted 'standard' pedal order and try some alternatives. We are looking specifically at delay, reverb and modulation: how they react before and after overdrive in your signal chain. As we discover, some of these pedal order changes bring subtle results… while others are very radical.

Greg Koch visits That Pedal Show with the Koch Marshall Trio band for jams and banter. We also demo his signature Reverend Gristlemaster guitar, The Greg Koch amp and of course the Gristle King pedal. Get ready for a ride of truly savage tomfoolery!

Ah, Greg Koch. Gregory Kochery. The Gristlemeister, Sasquatch of six-string savagery. Do you dig it? Well we dig it to epic new levels in this video as our old chum finally descends on That Pedal Show to split our sides with tales of epic guitar heroism… and a lot of hard work and frankly idiotic compulsion for this thing we loosely call ‘music’. Greg tells us all about his beginnings as a pro musician, before we get into the nitty-gritty on his signature Reverend guitar, Koch amp and Gristle King pedal.

And just when you thought it couldn’t get any better, we are thrilled to welcome Koch Marshall Trio: Toby Lee Marshall on organ, and Gary Koehler on drums for renditions of tracks The Tulsa Tussle, Unrepentant and Sweet Tea. Even Dan and I get in on the action for some jammage. Do we dig it? Enjoy!

We assemble two pedalboards that would be allowed as cabin/hand luggage on a typical budget airline. A wide, versatile range of sounds and fast setup is essential – who wins?

Life too short for long YouTube videos? Please see the ‘Interesting bits and go-to sections’ information below.

After receiving lots of feedback that our normal, big pedalboards are too big and cumbersome for MPMOTT (most people most of the time), we decided to address the issue with a challenge! Let’s assume we’re flying on a budget airline and have only carry-on/hand luggage… not knowing what amp may be at the other end. What can we come up with? Let’s find out – enjoy the episode!

Judge’s note: We never got to see Mick’s change of clothes and ablutive accoutrements. The judge hereby confirms he did have a laptop bag containing said items as per the Easy Jet Speedy Boarding allowance ready and packed. But with all the pedalboard fun, we forgot to film it. Doh!

So, um, yes he has! In this episode we pick up from where we left off well over a year ago in ‘Dan Wants A New Flanger’, which you watch here: https://youtu.be/mxyaUfKooDg Like a fine wine or maybe one of those truly gopping mouldy cheeses, the question of Dan's flanger has needed time to ferment and mature into a well rounded answer… not least while Thorpy was developing the new Camoflange with the help of British guitar effects guru, Dan Coggins. Which means there are no prizes whatsoever for guessing what Dan’s new favourite flanger is. He’s really quite ripe about it. Let’s flange and…

This segment is where we answer your questions and comments.

The main focus of the Q&A will be the main show that went out on the preceding Friday, but we'll answer other stuff too.

Here's the link to the main show being discussed – it is primarily about the Strymon Iridium. https://youtu.be/XKmN-Dykgjk

It's live so we talk about a lot of other stuff too.

We demo the Strymon Iridium amp, cab and room simulator pedal alongside Vox AC30 and Fender Super Reverb guitar amplifiers. We use a selection of effects pedals including overdrive, fuzz & delay.

Life too short for long YouTube videos? See ‘Interesting bits and go-to sections’ below.

Welcome! Regular viewers will know that Dan and I aren’t regular users of digital modelling amps and cabs. Why? Well, because we own pretty much all the real stuff and we absolutely love playing it for a whole host of reasons. Nevertheless, we are genuinely intrigued by the Strymon Iridium because of its simplicity, form factor and adaptability into traditional pedalboards. That is what this video is about, plus some comparisons with some ‘real’ amps. Thus…

WHAT AM I HEARING? The actual valve amps are mic’d with Sontronics Delta 2 ribbon mics on the cabs, plus a pair of AKG C414 XLS mid-side for stereo room mics. They go into a Universal Audio Apollo 8p interface running Neve 1073 mic preamp plugins.

The Iridium is going direct to stereo channels in the Apollo 8p with no additional preamps. It is a purely direct signal: no microphones. In the studio we are hearing the Iridium’s direct sound through 1500-watt EV PA speakers.

WHY DIDN’T YOU USE A FENDER DELUXE REVERB? We don’t own one. We do have a Super Reverb which isn’t the same thing, but it is close enough for an interesting comparison.

We will do a VCQ this Monday to discuss the reaction and comments. Should be fun. Enjoy the episode!

This is the audio from our video here: https://youtu.be/3zbo_ZGxvZc

We demo and compare guitar amps using EL84 power tubes: Vox AC15 C1, 1961 Vox AC30, Victory VC35 The Copper and Matchless HC-30. We play clean, crank the amps to overdrive and also use a couple of key boost pedals.

Life too short for long YouTube videos? Please see the ‘Interesting bits and go-to sections’ information below.

In this episode Dan and I fire up four amps that we like very much to see what we can learn. Dan’s beloved 1961 AC30 is his most treasured amplifier… but not the one he chooses to play as his main amp. That would be his Matchless HC-30 which – as amp fans will know– is chiefly inspired by those classic Vox amps of old. So how do they compare? But fear ye not those of thinner wallet. Clearly not everyone has multiple thousand pounds/dollars/euros to drop on these rarefied lungs of rock’n’roll, so we also include the much more attainable Vox AC15 C1 and Victory VC35 to see how they stand up. (And if you want to hear a digital simulation side by side with the AC30, watch next week’s show on the Strymon Iridium.) It’s a long video with plenty of tangents, even more variables and about as much scientific analysis as a three-year-old eating trifle, so anyone looking for stringent A/B comparisons and hard conclusions will be disappointed. It's just how it is here people.

Enjoy the episode!

We demo the Boss MD-200, Stone Deaf PDF-1x, Green Carrot Pedals Comfortably Plum and TC Electronic Flashback II x4 guitar effects pedals.

Welcome to Pedal Jams, where we feature four guitar effects pedals that are new (to us anyway). Our agenda is purely to plug them in, see what cool sounds and features we find, and combine them in whatever way inspires… and have a little jam to put them in context.

Ariel Posen joins us to talk about his 2019 travel board, the signature Hudson Broadcast-AP overdrive pedal and his incredible metal-body Mulecaster. He also jams with the That Pedal Show band!

Ariel is a wonderful musician who we first met in 2016. He has a long CV of band, touring and session playing, including The Brothers Landreth. He has recently embarked on a solo career, releasing the album ‘How Long’ in 2019, following up with live dates across Europe and North America. We are delighted to welcome him to Schwangri-La to shoot the breeze about life, guitars and related matters arising… not least his new Hudson Broadcast-AP pedal, before some epic jammage with Doug Mussard (drums) and Paddy Blight (bass) – otherwise known as That Pedal Show Band… when they don’t have a better gig - ha! Ariel is playing the Two-Rock throughout, Mick and Dan play the Victory at the end.
