Bryan Fischer here with today’s Life and Liberty Minute. The country of Jamaica is dealing with skyrocketing violence and murder rates, and has decided they’ve hit on the solution: make it illegal for children to be spanked. They say spanking teaches children that violence is okay. But it’s the other way round. If a child gets spanked because he hits his brother on the head with a toy, he’ll reconsider his view of violence in a hurry. Spanking that is measured, purposeful, and done in response to willful disobedience is a form of love, not abuse. Spanking is not violence, it is discipline. And according to the Bible, it is necessary. Folly is bound up in the heart of a child, Proverbs says, and the rod drives it far from him. The problem in Jamaica is not that adult criminals were spanked too much, it’s that they weren’t spanked enough.
