I often hear success talked about as if it has some universally agreed upon definition. And often the implication has something to do with career and/or money. But it can mean anything you want. Anything.

In this episode I explore my own thoughts on success, I share ways I cultivate the feeling of success or arrive at it, and tons of questions for you to explore and arrive at your own definition. I hope this episode sparks more conversation and allows us all to lean into how incredible and magical we all are right now in this moment.

Yes, I myself have said "Rest is Productive." And it can be. For sure. But also - when was the last time you rested or cared for yourself for the SAKE of resting + caring for yourself, and not as a means to get back to work? Today I share lessons from my latest burnout so we all learn from it.

Listen in to hear:

  • Why rest CAN be productive - but why that's not helpful as your underlying motivation
  • Another way of thinking about resting and self care
  • Leaning into indulging in rest and self care for the sake of them
  • A lesson if you're someone who only takes forced pauses, not intentional, indulgent pauses
  • Some great questions sprinkled in to support you resting and caring for yourself
  • Thinking about caring for yourself as you would your inner or younger child self
  • Many many reminders to just take that nap if ya wanna!

Every lessons has layers and this is my latest layer in my burnout lesson. I'm honored to share it with you and hope it gives you some jumping off points for your own lessons, your own rest, your own self care. đź’š

Not all of productivity is active creation. AND some is co-creation. Our society prioritizes doing doing doing but I reject it + show you in this episode a different way to think about and relate to productivity.

Listen in to hear:

  • What productivity is and isn't
  • An example of non-toxic productivity in farming + gardening (truly transformational idea)
  • How to get yourself to do things when your default is to do nothing - and why you're not lazy or wrong or bad
  • Why resting is resting and not productive (yes I've gone back on my own words - evolution of thought is wonderful)
  • Why leaning into your capacity is so much more important than just producing producing producing
  • How so much of art happens in the liminal space, lean in
  • You will not hear in this episode "How to be more productive" but you will hear why not
  • How to explore your capacity

Prioritize your day to day, your lived experience over what + how much you produce. Productivity is neutral - but our societal view of it is mostly toxic. This episode is a different take on how we can relate to productivity taking our own capacity into account. It's a love letter from my heart. đź’š

  • How take responsibility for your action + inactions without shame
  • Why it IS ok that you didn't do the thing AND what to do next
  • How to hold yourself accountable

Confidence is about the quality of your self trust, not the quality of your work. It's not about "Am I good enough?" "Is my art good?" It's - "I trust in my capacity to learn, and grow, and evolve, and create." Period.

Listen in to hear:

  • Why yes you CAN do what you want - even if it hasn't happened yet (And how to think about it so that you CAN)
  • Why confidence has nothing to do with how good your art is, how good your work is, whether or not you've done something before
  • How to overcome Imposter Syndrome and be confident anytime about anything
  • How I think about confidence and why I'm always confident in my guitar skills even when I don't think I'm good (What?? Yes.)
  • Why you already have confidence, you're just choosing it to be in your LACK of results and how to switch that

This episode will completely shift how you think about confidence and your ability to feel confident. Listen in and enjoy!

Belonging is a choice. It's not given to you by anyone else. It is yours to decide. But of course, it's not always that easy right! So I'm here to give you some thoughts to try on so that you can decide to belong now.

In this episode I talk about:

  • Why + How belonging is a choice
  • Some of my own journey with choosing to belong
  • Why you might not choose to belong + how to think about it differently
  • How boundaries and belonging are different things
  • Why it is so valuable to choose to belong everywhere as your default
  • Why it may be valuable to also decide everyone belongs everywhere
  • How belonging is similar to confidence and self trust
  • What it means to belong

You belong here. Decide that. Believe that. Be that.

Or your wallet. Today I'm talking about a tool I use with myself and my clients to gain awareness and create ACTUAL (and often instant) change.

If you find yourself repeating the same patterns like walking out the door without your wallet and then saying "Oh I'll definitely remember next time" and then... not. Over and over and over - this episode is for you.

This is how I create new habits. This is how I stop bad habits. This is how I don't lie to myself and think I'll remember that song I wrote without recording it or writing it down.

This is what I walk my clients through consistently so they can create change ANYTIME.

I talk about:

  • not lying to yourself about your memory so you can actually remember next time
  • how to gain awareness when you "lose time" (i.e. "I just don't know where the time went" "I don't even know what I was doing")
  • why, again, hoping is not creating the change you want and what to do instead
  • why your patterns keep repeating and what to do about it
  • why your brain can be a jerk and sabotage you, and why it's not your fault!

Listen in and make a change TODAY!

Don't set goals hoping and trying to achieve them. And then quit the second you start to doubt it. Set your goals and treat them like your next tour. Like it's happening. 100%. And you're just doing everything within your control to make it a reality.

In this episode I talk about:

  • why hoping + trying is why you're not hitting your goals
  • why doubt isn't a problem
  • how to USE doubt to achieve your goals
  • how to plan for and treat your goals like your next tour (even if you're not a musician)

This episode is going to change your way of thinking in the best way. Don't miss it.

Perfection is a lie. Or it's real and it's just you being your true authentic self, which is my favorite definition.

Listen in for all things perfectionism and the ONE thought you need to think to shift out of it.

I talk about:

  • why the conventional meaning of perfection is a lie and subjective and vague
  • why trying to be perfect to avoid judgement doesn't work + what to do instead
  • what the Napster era of downloading demos has to do with perfection
  • what people actually want to see from you
  • how you are your own worst critic but why that thought can be really useful
  • the one thought that will shift it all

Happy to be back with new episodes!

I see so many people setting a million goals at the beginning of the year - thinking of "what would be fun this year?" And what I think? Throwaway goals are a waste of mental space and energy.

It is much more useful to set LESS goals that you are ACTUALLY committed to achieving. Because the added benefit is that other goals will happen as a byproduct. Because you are focused on growth, as we talked about in last week's episode.

The best questions to ask when setting a goal: Where do I want to grow? And what am I willing to do to get there?

And join me for Hella Year 2022 to learn all the foundations for growth-focused goals and having your best year yet. No matter what. Hella Year 2022 will happen December 27-31, 2021 in your inbox and on Instagram and you can join: RIGHT HERE.

The AIM of the goal is to achieve it. But it's not the point. And when you make achieving the goal the point it makes it harder to achieve and easier to quit.

So what is the point of the goal? Growth. And the way to achieve a goal: commitment + consistency.

Keep setting the goal in the same timeframe until you hit it. Keep assessing and learning each time. EVEN WHEN YOU DO ACHIEVE IT.

Spoiler alert: There is no right way. There is YOUR way.

But also - asking am I doing this right or wrong? Is just not the most useful question to ask.

Today is a special treat! I sat down with my friend and fellow creative, Nichole Czajkowski. We discuss craft, the distinction of craft and fine art, accessible art, what creativity means to us and to the world, the value of critique, and so much more. This episode is an exploration of all things creativity and craft and will make you think differently about it all. If you want to deepen your own creative exploration and thoughts on creativity and craft - Nichole is for sure your guide.

Living in Olympia, WA - raised in the Puget Sound on pop culture and dollar store crafts - Nichole explores an academic career curious about nostalgia, tradition, consumerism, representation, community, and the real & tangible STUFF that connect all of us together.

whether you know it or not - you are always validating yourself first.

so just decide to do that as a practice.

it is OK of course to ask people for compliments! to ask for validation! to take the compliment! to use that to help build up confidence!

but just know how magical you are right now. and know that you are secretly believing that when you accept a compliment anyway.

when we validate ourselves we get to live authentically. and we also allow others to live authentically.

you are enough. and worthy. and magical. and so cool.

talking all about money today and how it is just a detail. its just a fact. and setting a money goal doesn't make you selfish. doesn't mean you've sold out. it can actually just be a metric for creating the life you actually want.

instead of "what can i do right now?" ask "what do i want right now?" and make the plan from there. this is the way to get what you want everytime.

don't use the past to determine your future.

create your future based on what you want. not what you've done.

i see a lot of creatives with so many ideas feel stuck by what to do next. or they have a momentary good idea get going on it find themselves lost and then don’t know where to go from there.

heres how to stop that cycle:

  1. clarify your vision
  2. make a plan
  3. use your vision + plan as a filter for any new idea you have

you deserve the life you want. so stay committed to that life. keep going and filter distractions through that commitment.

i'm not a fan of the culture of "no more excuses". (with a tiny caveat i share in this episode) i think we all have reasons for everything we do - and today on the podcast i'm sharing a quick but powerful tool for knowing your reasons for how you spend your time. why do you want to know your reasons? because that's how you'll change everything. that's how you'll grow the fastest. that's how you'll get sh*t done + also have plenty of space for rest.

listen in to hear:

  • the difference between excuses and reasons
  • why its so powerful to know your reasons for doing things (or not doing things)
  • a quick and powerful 2-part exercise to add into your day to notice your own patterns + reasons
  • what i think about "bettering" yourself

i also mentioned these two episodes today:

today you are in for a treat! i'm chatting with seattle based musician marquetta miller (of breaks and swells + knife knights) and we talk about it allll. if you are a musician thinking of becoming a working musician, or just a generally cool human, this episode is for you. marquetta shares her perspective on the scene and what she hopes to see when we come out of quarantine as well as lessons learned over the past year. it's beautiful discussion on how the scene can work for all of us, with a nice touch of - make sure to prioritize your mental health - in there.

a little about marquetta:

Marquetta Miller has been performing her whole life; from singing Stevie Wonder into a hairbrush, to singing Stevie Wonder in front of a sold out crowd. Marquetta has spent over 15 years in the Seattle music scene; exploring many genres: jazz, punk, power pop, soul, and musical theater to name a few. She has stepped on many stages; from The Moore, to The Comet Tavern. Currently she is the vocalist for Breaks and Swells and working on releasing new music in 2021, and a contributing member to the hip-hop collective known as Knife Knights. The artist is a Black woman dedicated to lifting the voices of her community, especially those from BiPOC, LGBTQIA+, and femme-identifying backgrounds. After a Covid-induced break from performing Marquetta is ready to get back on stage.

things we discussed:

  • staying safe during the pandemic as a musician and making decisions for you and your mental health, but also considering the collective
  • staying active as a band during a pandemic, and especially during a huge social justice movement
  • a few silver linings to the pandemic and all the challenging feelings that come along with that
  • being able to respond to the moment with music
  • the challenging feelings of having personal hardships unrelated to the pandemic during a pandemic
  • the processing and grieving that needs to happen for a lot of us after this last year v the urge to get back out there and go hard
  • the overcommodification of everything v doing things out of joy
  • the disconnect between bands and venues and bookers
  • considering setting an industry standard when accepting a show offer
  • the “argument” of booking local openers for touring acts and remembering why we are doing this: the music
  • going on a next level tour
  • goals for the future as a musician
  • Marquette’s writing process
  • trust yourself and put your mental health first

give it a listen and then make sure to check out all of Marquetta’s projects and support this rad human!

today we've got a real treat on the podcast - the magical human we are so lucky to know - river! we have a wonderful, philosophical discussion of art and creativity and process and life. enjoy!

a lil about river:

River James Stofleth (They/Them)
I’ve been living and working in Seattle for about 21 years now and love it. I’m heavily inspired by the natural beauty of the Pacific Northwest, and you can easily see that inspiration in my paintings and other visual art projects. I like to draw from the myriad of wild and strange images found here in our neck of the woods…The imposing mountains and volcanos, the thousand-year-old trees, the silly birds or the warm sun over Puget Sound.

in this episode we discuss:

  • cakearoke - the best night of the week: vegan cake + karaoke, which river hosted and how we met
  • exploring the desire to be heard, and hearing without pretense
  • exploring the identities of creatives and what it means to choose them, how to know if you are "enough" to call yourself an artist or a writer or any creative title
  • leaning into the "mess" + radical self acceptance
  • always coming back to yourself and the question "how am i feeling right now?"
  • being versus doing + making time for spaciousness
  • you are here and that is true and that is perfect
  • simple doesn't always mean easy
  • river's wisdom: take your own advice, you're the wisest person you know

in this episode we talk about:

  • my challenge with messy magic this week
  • if thoughts keep coming up, what that means
  • why growth is not linear and why that is ok
  • the cycle of thoughts happening with perfectionism and where you might be getting stuck
  • the questions to ask yourself to get out of the perfectionism thought cycle
  • a baking metaphor!
  • defining perfect and knowing what the goal is
  • when doing it right and perfect isn’t the goal (and when it actually is)
  • the case for letting it be messy
  • my belief in perfection existing
  • why i don’t argue with my brain, but talk to it like someone who believes something VERY different from me (the productive way)
  • what perfection is - to me
  • how to use my definition of perfection when creating something new
  • what to do if you disagree with me (or anyone)

how often do you consider what someone else will think when making a decision? when sharing your art? when speaking your truth?

other people's opinions drive a lot of decisions and its just the least effective and efficient way to make good decisions. but what's the alternative? i'm sharing the mindset and the practicality of choosing to have your own back first, instead. listen in to stop caring what people think while still caring about those people.

listen in to hear:

  • why we consider other people's opinions
  • why that's already not working the way you think
  • whether people are telling the truth or not and why it doesn't matter
  • mentioned episode of hidden brain: useful delusions
  • showing you how you already are choosing the truth, but how to do that more powerfully + intentionally and in a way that serves you
  • the case for assuming everyone likes you and how to do that
  • why compliments feel good (not what you think)
  • what to do with other people's opinions
  • you can choose right now to feel good, why that's true and how to do that
  • seeking other people's opinions are deciding someone else knows the truth over us
  • when someone you love disagrees with you and feels bad about it
  • how to start naturally choosing your own opinion over other people's
  • why having your own back over listening to other people's opinions can actually strengthen your relationship
  • a different perspective for those of us with a history of replaying conversations over and over to determine where we went wrong when nothing actually went wrong
  • better questions to ask than "did they like it?" "do they like me?"

today we are talking all about how to choose priorities, how to know what to schedule on your to-do list, how to schedule for your goals.

we talk about:

  • the reasons why you may struggle with prioritizing and what works well + what to focus on
  • answering "what is the right thing to do?"
  • how you might be putting decision making in the hands of others and what to do instead
  • priorities are not static and what that means for you
  • whatever priorities you choose, make sure you love your reasons for them
  • not prioritizing things you "should" or "have to" do, + what the alternative is
  • what to do if you are dependent on someone or they are dependent on you and how to still prioritize your needs without being selfish
  • how to always prioritize what serves you
  • the difference between a good idea and what we actually want to do
  • using long term goals and weekly evaluations to inform your day-to-day priorities
  • episode mentioned: 27 - how to grow at quantum speeds
  • how i choose my priorities
  • when you are impatient for results
  • all of this is an experiment
  • focusing on past failures as an indicator of the future v. choosing what you want to believe

money is a charged topic. and causes so much stress for most of us. and used to be my biggest stressor as well.

what surprised me most was that when i focused on my mindset around money - my stress lessened, even before my income increased. its possible. and it makes creating more money so much easier when it comes from sufficiency rather than stress filled lack.

the feelings of abundance and sufficiency are available to you now. if you are willing. listen in to hear how and:

  • the 5 main ways money stress may be showing up for you and what to do about it
  • the best questions to ask yourself if you want to make more money
  • why i don't focus my attention on paying down debt or building up savings FIRST

i hear so many people say "i just want to get paid for my art". but i don't see even half of them actually selling their art. and i think i know why. this week we will discuss how to know if you actually want to get paid for your art. next week we will dive into what to do if that answer is yes.

(there is some fuzziness in the audio off and on, i'm not sure what happened here but i'll do my best to resolve it by next week! sorry y'all!)

listen in to hear:

  • a little life update
  • how to know if getting paid for your art is really what you want and what that would look like
  • examining "do what you love and you'll never work a day in your life" + trading hours for money
  • how i view getting paid for my music and where my income comes from
  • prioritizing art versus profiting from art, getting paid for your art versus making art and getting paid
  • creating for the sake of creating versus creating to make money
  • recognizing where you do have choice
  • why i didn't move to new york to be on broadway
  • what i did instead
  • should you get paid for your passion or something you're good at?
  • making the case for potentially wasting your time

some journal prompts to explore more:

  • what would it look like to actually make money from my art? what would my day to day look like?
  • is that what i want? is that the lifestyle i want to have?
  • what other options are out there? what could fuel my art so i can continue prioritizing it?
  • who is doing what i want to do already? what does their day to day look like? is that what i want?
  • what are all of the things that happen between making art and getting paid for it? and are you willing to do that?

boundaries are simply a way of expressing our needs to someone we are in relationship with. they are compassionate. and they go both ways. we all deserve to have our needs met. but we've got to let people know what that means to us because we all have individual needs. listen in for a new way to think about boundaries if you have struggled to express them in the past.

there is so much suffering in the world because we are avoiding or suppressing our emotions. the simplest way to allow the emotions: notice how you're feeling and actively allow the feeling to exist. you can say to yourself "i am feeling X and that is ok". it doesn't mean you have to like the emotion. you're just allowing. i also share in this episode some ways to process the emotion further.

this interview should be listened to every single time you doubt that little voice in your head that says "i mean......this thing i've thought of forever would be real cool tho"

what if it actually opens up the exact path you want and are meant for? alithea is an example of just that.

Alithea O’Dell is a printmaker and letterpress printer in Olympia, Washington, currently studying at The Evergreen State College. She unites ideas of material culture, surviving trauma, and interpersonal communication in her work. She also likes “pop punk throw-up music” and TikTok videos of dogs.

todays episode is an interview with urban landscape oil painter and artist coach, teresa o'neill haag.

nuggets of wisdom from teresa:
-try everything until you figure out what works for you
-know your own brain and find when your brain functions best for certain activities and schedule them in then
-each individual piece of artwork that you do has the ability to impact and making lasting change on that person and their family and their generations to come
-magic happens when you allow
-get into belief that you are an artist, people are out there waiting for your art, and that what you’re doing is important

a great question to ask yourself when setting a new goal is who do i want to be at the end of this?

this is especially pertinent when creating a new habit because said habit will become your identity.

however with a project based goal this is also possible if you plan ahead to create a habit in the process.

both ways of setting goals are great and have their own uses, but together they can be so powerful! in assessing my goal of releasing an ep, i realized i didn't fully set myself up for creating a solid habit along the way. so i want to share my lessons with you!

the power is in the intention. so when setting a new goal here's some questions to ask yourself:

who do i want to be once i have achieved the goal?
how will i know when i have achieved it?
is this plan sustainable?
does it excite me?
am i willing to go through the shitty parts to get what i want?
am i willing to not want to do it sometimes and do it anyway?
WHY am i doing this?
why is this important to me?

let's chat all about it today!

what to do when you don't have a set schedule! if you're someone who, like me for 16 years, didn't know when they were working until the sunday before that week - this episode is for you! if you do any sort of on-call, gig work, or service industry job, i've got a lotta tips for ya! yes you can plan your schedule, and here's how.

step 1. decide when you are available to work. (i.e. set boundaries)

what do you do when “life” gets in the way of your schedule? i’m dishing it all in this episode!

here’s the two step simple process:

-reschedule the task or event, if need be

-assess what happened, what you could have done differently (if anything), and what you will do next time to either prevent this or manage it better next time

some questions to ask yourself:

-could i have reasonably predicted this? (i.e. does this often or always happen? or was this a total surprise?)

-if no, do i like how i handled it? do i like the result i got? can i still create a different result?

-if yes, what will i do differently next time? create a game plan for when this comes up again since it likely will

when you are 100% committed and focused on your goal, nothing will take you away. you only get distracted when you have resistance towards accomplishing your goals. the things that do get in the way are only those that take priority in that moment or in life, but you will always come back to your larger goals.

once something is on your to-do list or your calendar, it will just get done. right? well.... not if you don't "feel" like right? wrong! here's all my tips for how to still get things done even if you don't feel like it!

some questions to ask yourself in the moment:

  • why don’t i want to do it?
  • do i like my reasons?
  • if i don’t do it now, what are the consequences?
  • am i ok with that?
  • why did i want to do it in the first place?
  • what is the result if i do do it now?
  • do i like that more than not doing it?
  • is it possible to break up the task and get it done in chunks?
  • is there something i’d rather be doing that i can schedule for after i get this done?
  • is there something i could do instead right now but also get this done later?
