Dying with Mon: Recent Episodes

Monika O'Hanlon

In this weekly podcast, journalist Monika O'Hanlon speaks with people from different religions and movements about what they believe happens when we die. This surprisingly upbeat series attempts to remove some of the fear of death - so we can embrace our mortality - together.

I’m chuffed you’re here - Because I have an absolute ripper of an episode for you today.

Do you ever get caught up in a deep scroll and suddenly realise you’re in a very “niche” part of the internet? Whether it’s slime content, mini kitchens, babies saying the F word, or maybe somewhere a bit darker... like last week’s episode, I found Nick, who is a collector of human remains and artefacts.

Now my algorithm is pretty strange, I go to some weird and wonderful places. And something which really caught my eye recently was “professional slap” videos. The clips have been going viral, they’re so brutal. I went into an absolute worm hole with these videos… and someone who really stood out to me was a guy named Brian Ellis – AKA The Predator. I reached out on Instagram, and within a few days we were sitting down for a chat. I am over the moon to be able to share with you our conversation. Despite his nickname, Brian is so lovely – and incredibly talented. So without further ado… here’s Brian…

My guest today is Nick Bowman, a collector and merchant of the macabre. And when I say macabre, some of the pieces we talk about, genuinely caught me off guard. But Nick was so lovely and so open, and I think he explained his fascination with these artifacts really well.

Like he says in our chat – it’s not for everyone, nor is he trying to push this interest on anyone. Nick was really keen to bust some myths as there’s a lot of misconceptions about the collecting world – especially when you’re dealing with human body parts. We talk about everything from the practicalities of collecting and the ethics, to Nick’s private collection and to those big ticket items he would love to get his hands on.

I do want to put in a disclaimer here – as I said we do talk about some pretty dark and heavy topics.

You really are in for a treat, Nick’s great and this is such a fascinating conversation. So without further ado – let’s dive in….

Hello! Today on the pod I actually had a completely different episode for you ... but technology isn't playing ball with me so I’m saving that one for next week. Today we’re looking back at a chat I had during the covid lockdowns a few years ago. It’s with a lovely lass named Graceie who – as well as a working as a bunch of other things, is an Antarctic tour guide. Absolute legend and a really adventurous soul. You’ll probably hear it in my voice, because of the time difference, I think Gracie might’ve been in the US, we had to do it at like 4 or 5 in the morning in Queensland. But it was so worth it.. I really hope you enjoy it!

Today we’re looking into the history of… salt.

You’re probably thinking... WHY? They’re just tiny white crystals that you sprinkle on your chips - and you’re right, salt makes stuff taste.. glorious!

But did you know it played a crucial role in shaping human civilization? Strap in because I’m about to knock your socks off!

Cute as a fluffy bunny, energetic as Tigger on speed and single-minded as a sex-starved sailor on leave (I stole that from her website) it’s the one… the only... Fou Fou Kaboom!

I was lucky enough to see the UK's Burlesque Idol of 2022 in action before we sat down and had a chat, and let me tell you - she's one ridiculously talented human being.

We speak about a lot of stuff – from the history of Burlesque and Fou Fou’s introduction to the artform, to her creative process, being a woman in the entertainment industry and misconceptions about the scene.

I hope you enjoy this conversation as much as I did.

Today we're going back to a conversation I had in 2021 with Peter Heaven, a Level 4 guide within the Raëlian Movement. If you've never heard of this community, you are certainly in for a treat.

The Raëlian Church was founded in the 1970s by French race-car journalist, Maitreya Rael after an extraordinary encounter with a human being from another planet.

At the time of this conversation we were in the depth of a Covid 19 lockdown, and death was a major topic around the globe. I found this conversation quite comforting, and incredibly interesting.

I thoroughly enjoyed this conversation with Peter, and I really hope you do to.

With thanks to our guest: Peter Heaven

The inspiration behind today’s episode is a bit strange actually. I’ve been working at this amazing therapeutic school in London, and there’s this park nearby.. which was once a grave yard. And there lies a very famous pantomime clown named – Joseph Grimaldi. He passed away in 1837, but was the most popular English entertainer of the Regency era. As a tribute they put in this interactive installation where you can actually dance on his grave – it’s a bit dark, but I really love it. And it got me thinking, because I don’t really know much about clowns – well until now..

Welcome back to the "With Mon" podcast. I'm your host, Monika O'Hanlon, and I am thrilled to have your company today. It is a very special episode because this one was requested by Steph, a lovely listener in Western Australia. I had never heard of "The Dancing Plague" until Steph reached out - such an interesting moment in history. Really enjoyed making this one, so thank you so much for requesting it Steph.

Today, we're going back in time, revisiting a remarkable event that unfolded in the city of Strasbourg, wayyyy back when. This historical phenomenon, known as the Strasbourg Dancing Plague, is truly bizarre... and absolutely fascinating. I hope you like it!

This week's episode is a conversation with the lovely Gazza, who is a Damanhurian.

Damanhur is an international community founded by spiritual researchers, pushing the boundaries of perception to bring catalyzed personal-collective growth, and galactic understanding of our connection to the universe.

This chat is definitely a little nod to one of my old series, Dying with Mon, and it’s absolutely fascinating. Gazza was just wonderful, she had such a warm presence despite this being over a video call, and that voice – I could’ve listened to her speak all day!

However - I do feel like I have to put in a quick disclaimer. There has been some controversy come up in the media about Damanhur. And although we do touch on it at the end, this episode isn’t about that – I just wanted to learn more about the community and their beliefs. But of course you are entitled to do your own research.

That being said – this is truly a fascinating conversation, and a lot of what Gazza said I could really relate with.

I really hope you enjoy it!

This week I speak with a lovely bloke by the name of Rod. He enjoys photography and is engaged to a wonderful lady who is currently living overseas - and he lives with sex dolls.

I’m sure you may have already guessed, today’s topic is a little risqué, so if there are little ears about maybe save this for a bit later or chuck on the headphones.

Living with Sex Dolls... The name might bring with it certain connotations, however, keep an open mind because it’s an incredibly honest and open chat - we discuss things like mental health, common misconceptions about dolls, as well as some of the more “spicy” details. So without further ado – let’s get into it!

Today I'm going to take your breath away - because we're delving into the history of the resuscitation doll mask, affectionally known as... Resusci Anne.

I’m glad to be back in your earholes because I’ve got a pretty special episode for you today.

As we do discuss adult themes it may be best if there’s kids around, chuck on those head phones or save this until a bit later.

I did this interview a few years back with Darcy who is an ABDL – an Adult Baby Diaper Lover. Now I have to admit, I remember feeling a bit nervous going into this one, I just didn’t understand it at all, and I think that’s pretty common. But Darcy was so lovely and really patient with me. They articulated everything so well and it really openend my eyes to the scene - it's absolutely fascinating.

Hello – welcome back to the “with Mon” podcast! This week’s a bit of a special one, I’ve been “rummaging” through some of my old interviews and found a conversation I had with the extraordinary Oberon Zell. Genuinely one of THE most interesting people I’ve had the pleasure of speaking with. He’s an artist, teacher, author. He’s also a wizard, and the Founder and Primate of the Church of All Worlds. We recorded this chat right in the thick of the pandemic – which is wild, it feels like so long ago now. We cover SO many interesting topics, I’m not even going to try and summarise it for you now because it really is best if you hear straight from the conversation. So settle, because you really are in for a treat.

Well hello stranger! It’s me… Mon! You know – Trips with Mon, Living with Mon, Dying with Mon, North East Arnhem Land with... Mon!

Yeah I’m back! But this time, I’m doing exactly what you’re not supposed to with podcasting... I’m going broad... while actually - I am abroad. You see, Covid, like for many people, messed up my partner and my plans.

Now in our early 30s, with biological clocks frantically ticking away, we’re not quite ready for what we thought we would be.

So in early 2023 we decided to move our life across the pond – and cram as much living in as possible… before taking that next step… Which is what I hope to do with this series…

I’m speaking with some of THE most interesting people on the planet. We’re also exploring topics and historical events which often fall to the way side.

And the best thing is... YOU can get involved. If there’s people you want me to interview or topics you want discussed – send them in, I’m all ears.

So what’s this thing gonna be called then? Well look, it’s a show about anything and everything. So I’m going to keep it open and call it – WITH MON.

Make sure you click that subscribe or follow button in your favourite podcast app

With Mon – coming to your earholes VERY soon!

Hi - Mon here!

I've just released the trailer to a new series I've been working on. It's called Living with Mon and it explores some of the most interesting lifestyles out there.

My favourite thing about this project was getting the opportunity to take some time and just have a chat with all these extraordinary people – some who had completely different views than my own, live polar opposite lifestyles – and I had the best time, and I feel like I really learnt a lot.

So if you’re keen to open your mind, step out of your shoes and take a stroll in someone else’s – search Living with Mon wherever you get your podcasts. Episode 1 of Living with Mon will be dropping very shortly.

I cannot wait to start this journey with you.

Hello! Welcome to another episode of Dying with Mon. I’m so happy to have you with me as we explore what death means to people from different religions and movements.

Today’s guest is a tricky one to put into just one box. Her name’s Tracey Rhodes and she’s a clairvoyant and a spiritual healer, among other things.

We met at the Eumundi Markets last year and the way she spoke about death was so beautiful I wanted to hear more.

Tracey actually introduced me to the White Eagle Lodge, which I did an episode on earlier in the series. If you want to check it out, I speak with Gay Robinson and explore what their community is all about.

The day Trace and I set up the interview (like the rest of them it was all online) we had terrible weather. So in some parts the audio quality isn’t great - but bare with us, this episode is definitely worth it.

Tracey has this amazing energy, she just radiates warmth and was so open. It really was an awesome experience, so I hope you enjoy it as much as I did making it.

Helloo! Happy New Year! I hope your 2021 is off to a fabulous start!

If you’re new to the pod, welcome! Each week I speak to someone from a different religion or movement about what they believe happens when we die. And yes, it sounds pretty grim – but I can assure you, it’s surprisingly upbeat!

Today I am just thrilled to share with you a conversation I recorded last year with Reverend Robert Smith – AKA Bob. He’s a Churches of Christ Minister but has experience in a number of denominations within Christianity – and he’s got some really interesting perspectives.

I think like many people growing up in Australia, Christianity - and in my case particularly Catholicism was the first religion I learnt about, so I thought I had the basics covered. However, I was actually really surprised about some of the things Bob said. He’s a lovely guy, super patient and a fabulous storyteller. I really hope you enjoy it!

Happy Hump Day! To celebrate the final episode of Dying with Mon for 2020 we are going out with a bang!

Today’s guest may sound a bit controversial – but I can assure you it's not what you think. I highly recommend going into this one with an open mind and listening to the entire episode. Because this week I speak with Robin Bristow – AKA brother Samael Dema Gorgon. He’s in charge of the Noosa Temple of Satan.

So whether you’re commuting to work, going for a jog or just at home - settle in, it’s going to be a good one.

Welcome back to another episode of Dying with Mon. I’m honored to have you on this journey with me as we explore what death means to people from different religions and movements.

As you will soon find out we had a lot of tech issues to begin with, on the day we recorded there was some pretty stormy weather around. But we persevered, and with a little help from Gay’s friend Steve we managed to record this episode – and I’m so glad we did!

If you’re like me and you’ve never heard of the White Eagle Lodge, I guarantee you are going to find this conversation absolutely fascinating. Gay was so generous with her time and just has this very calming way about her. If you find yourself feeling scared or worried about death and dying, I think this chat could give you a bit of peace of mind.

This week on Dying with Mon I am just thrilled to be speaking with Brahmin Priest and the Communications Officer for ISKON Australia – Bhakta Dasa.

I knew a little bit about the Hare Krishna movement, but coming out of this conversation I have a whole new outlook.

We cover everything from the history of the movement to Hare Krishna customs and traditions, and what devotees believe happen when we die.

Just FYI, this was recorded before Victoria came out of their strict lockdown, Bhakta is based in Melbourne and there are a few references in there - so just keep that in mind.

If you are enjoying this series so far a rating and a review would be much appreciated! It helps get this little show out there and I would be SO grateful.

Happy listening!

Hello – thank you so much for clicking on this podcast! I am SO excited to share with you episode 1 of Dying with Mon 💀

Obviously this year with the pandemic, death has been a huge subject. Even if you’ve never had someone close to you pass away, this year in particular - death has been highlighted around the world. Whether we like it or not it’s taken over our screens and our conversations. So why on earth would I dedicate an entire series to it? Well if you’re anything like me, and you find the idea of death scary or confronting – these conversations might make you feel a bit better. Or maybe you enjoy the topic and find it really interesting – either way, this series is for you. We’re going on a journey through life, death – and potentially an afterlife through the lenses of different religions and movements.

For our very first episode we sit down with the Founder of the Church of All Worlds, Oberon Zell. If you haven’t heard of him, you are certainly in for a treat. We speak about everything from starting the church in the 60’s to how his wife – Morning Glory came up with the term polyamory to describe her relationship with Oberon and their five way marriage. We also chat about past lives the afterlife and everything in between. He is an incredibly insightful guy and it was just so lovely chatting with him. I hope you enjoy this as much as I did. Happy listening!
