Vladimir, his father, and his siblings were linked tosugarcane and the sugarcane industry. Their farms were located in the municipality of Veroes, Venezuela, where many farms are dedicated to growingsugarcane, oranges, bananas, and raising cattle.
This story is a beautiful example of how humans canstep up to be extraordinary in emergency situations.

In this episode we explore Cuba’s folkloric poetry, the Punto Guajiro, through a few verses written by my cousin José Luis Rodríguez Martínez, who lives in Fomento, Cuba.
Punto is the poetic voice of our Cuban farmers. It consists of singings an improvised or learned stanza of ten octameter verse lines, with a rhyming scheme accompanied by string instruments.
En este episodio exploramos la poesía folclórica de Cuba,el Punto Guajiro, a través de unos versos escritos por mi primo José Luis Rodríguez Martínez, quien vive en Fomento, Cuba.

It was April 17, 1961. For over two years, Cuba had been suffering the quake of change that disrupted life as most knew it. It didn’t matter who or where you were:
Teachers in the hills conducting a census of literacy

Word spread across the island like lit gunpowder as the much-awaited invasion was unfolding.
Era el 17 de abril de 1961. Durante más de dos años, Cuba había estado sufriendo el terremoto del cambio que trastocó la vida tal como se conocía. No importaba quién era o dónde ibas: Maestras en las lomas realizando un censo de alfabetización, en el campo vacacionando en casa de un amigo o en la ciudad. La noticia se extendió por toda la isla como pólvora encendida mientras se desarrollaba la tan esperada invasión.

Do you know what has been celebrated on January 6th since the third century in certain parts of the world? Three Kings Day! El Dia de los Reyes Magos.
It’s the 12th day of Christmas, when Melchior, Caspar,and Balthazar rode their camels through miles of desert with gifts for baby Jesus and found their way to him guided by a new star in the heavens - the Star of Bethlehem.
Long ago, on the night before El Dia de los Reyes Magos, some Cuban family traditions included putting out food and water for the weary travelers and hay and water for the camels—Who surely would be very tired.
In the morning, you could tell they had been there andhad left gifts under a bed, on a kitchen table, or if a Christmas tree was still up, they would be under the tree.
By the time Fidel Castro’s revolution had taken roots, many of the customs surrounding the celebration had vanished from family life. Instead, a new way of celebration was introduced, as you will hear in Aileen’s childhood memories that take you to a communist Cuba.

¿Saben lo que se celebra el 6 de enero desde el siglo III en ciertas partes del mundo? ¡El Día de los Reyes Magos!
Es el día 12 de Navidad, cuando Melchor, Gaspar y Baltasar montaron sus camellos a través de kilómetros de desierto con regalos para el bebé Jesus y encontraron el caminohacia él, guiados por una nueva estrella en el firmamento: la Estrella de Belén.
Hace mucho tiempo, en la víspera del Día de los Reyes Magos, algunas tradiciones familiares cubanas incluían poner comida y agua para los cansados viajeros y heno y agua para los camellos, que seguramente estarían muy cansados tambien.
Por la mañana, se notaba que habían estado allí y habían dejado regalos debajo de una cama, en la mesa de la cocina, o si todavía había un árbol de Navidad en pie, estaban debajo del árbol.
Cuando la revolución de Fidel Castro echó raíces, muchas de las costumbres que rodeaban la celebración habían desaparecido de la vida familiar. En su lugar, se introdujo una nueva forma de celebración, como escucharán en el recuerdo de la infancia de Aileen.

One which came at the heels of the triumph of the revolution.

In November of every year, we bring you stories of “first Cuban Thanksgivings.” Mixed with the emotions of living in a land of freedom, we were introduced to “the turkey” – the culinary centerpiece of the holiday and all its accompaniments. Also, as a new Spanish-speakingarrival in North America, we were faced with a different language and what seemed, at the time, strange words and letter combinations like “th,” which required the speaker to gently thrust and manuver the toungue in a gymnastic feat.Coupled with a knack for dropping the last letter of a word, Thanksgiving became Sangibin.

Junto con una habilidad especial para dejar caer la última letra de una palabra, el Thanksgiving se convirtió en Sangibin.

The story goes that on a sunny afternoon, Emelia, Aileen’s mother, her sister, and their friend Carmen decided to go to La Bodega de Gorgonio. Her mom and her siblings were farm girls or guajiritas, and they always escorted each other when they went uptown.
As soon as they entered la bodega, a young man named Isidro Lorenzo was putting a nickel into the victrola - the jukebox, and the tune playing was, “Como Fue” by Benny Moré.

All I knew, after attending the talk about José Martí given by retired Judge Salcines, was that I wanted to release an episode close to May 19th to align with the 128th anniversary of José Martí’s death at the Battle of Dos Rios, in the Province of Camagüey.

Everyday, on her way to the grocery store she passed Jose Marti's bust, at the Cuban Club a spot where our he came to raise funds for the liberation of Cuba from Spanish colonial rule. For her, this day would not be an ordinary day, as you will hear.

Martha's journey was wrought with changes even before she arrived in Miami. She lived in Mexico and Ecuador where she saw poverty and trauma across all age groups, first hand. It is an understatement to say that she, like many of us who came to the States in the 60s, was deeply affected by cultural changes. We faced the unspoken trauma of being uprooted from our country of birth, trying on a different culture for size, and growing up without losing ourselves.
This is a story of hope and dedication.

In November, here in the States, we reserve a day to express our thanks for the opportunity to live in a free country – Thanksgiving Day. In years past, I have shared Cuban Thanksgiving stories, those funny ones that remind us of our first days in exile.
But, this year, I can't bring myself to do so, hearing about the exacerbated oppression in Cuba that pushes many to think of the unthinkable and launch themselves or their children on treacherous journeys seeking asylum.
In the Shadow of a Thanksgiving gives us a pause to recognize their tribulations and gives voice to the issue.

Don Julio Villarreal was born in 1865 in the town of Quivican, part of the Havana Province and now better known as the Mayabeque province.
He married Genara Milian in Santo Cristo De La Salud in 1902 and raised nine children on La Finca Arango. He bought a farm – a finca, in Santo Cristo De La Salud and named it La Julia. We want to honor the men who gave their best to try to liberate Cuba from Castro and honor their families, too. I'm speaking of Assault Brigade 2506, who left on their mission from Guatemala and Nicaragua – some on ships and others by plane on April 17, 1961.
This story begins in 1959 when Fidel Castro was interviewed on the Ed Sullivan Show in January, a few days after President Fulgencio Batista was overthrown.

This episode is a personal opinion piece and an SOS cry for my Cuba. Since July 2021, the world has seen videos and pictures of the force unleashed by the Communist regime on its population, the men and women who burst into the streets claiming justice. People who are hungry and are dying in a country where infrastructure has collapsed, and the government's response is to use violence against their own. We have also seen videos of how young men are forcibly dragged from their homes and drafted into a militia to knockout and contain their own. This ferocity hurts my soul, and I feel emotion strangling me; my throat seems to close, and my eyes swell. I can't help but add my voice to say, "Stop! Have pity of my people and the land that saw my birth. And cry against the myth of El Ché Guevara, known as El Ché, who was part and parcel of the revolution in Cuba."

Today’s episode is doubly special because we celebrate the first anniversary of the launch of this podcast series and share the story of Tomas and Luis Puig, father and son. This is a story of tangents, parallels, and possibilities. For me, it’s a Cuban-American story, an immigrant story that echoes so many others. So why is this story different? It’s different because it illustrates a historical view of Cuba during the first years of the Castro regime. For example, did you know that about 2000 Cuban CIA operatives worked to topple the government? A Cuban Patriot Against Tyranny is a story we should all hear to understand that many fought the then-nascent communist regime. We need to say their names so they are remembered. Because as a Cuban nation, we just didn’t give up. Luis Puig wrote about his family’s trials, and tribulations in an award-winning book recently published: Born Again - from Communism to American Submariner.

Today’s feature is a historic story titled Green Arms like Snakes, as told to me by Cousin Teresa Fuentes-Sardiñas of how they survived the Battle of Santa Clara, Cuba at the end of 1958. This battle was crucial to Fidel Castro and on the morning of December 29th, Ché Guevara (El Ché) delivered his assault on the city. Sta. Clara became a battleground as B-26 bombers of the Cuban Air Force fought the rebeldes - the rebels, from the air and on land with tanks and guns. For three days, the town remained in darkness, terrorized by the sound of gunshots, exploding Molotov cocktails, and bombs. While the rebels entered the city from the east via La Carretera Camajuaní, many spilled into the town's north through the monte - the bush, right by Loly's house!

Episode 11 is titled The Pedro Pan Kids, and discusses Operación Pedro Pan (also known as Operation Peter Pan) where 14,000 unaccompanied children were sent to exile in the United States to avoid communist indoctrination in Cuba. The episode also includes an excerpt from Chapter 4 of The Pedro Pan Girls, written by Betty Viamontes, author of the award winning book, The waiting glass-enclosed area at the airport in La Habana was nicknamed the pecera - the fishbowl. This analogy doesn't escape me thinking of the lyrics of a song by Willy Chirino, a Pedro Pan kid, "En la maleta traje un colibrí, un libro de Martí, un sueño y un danzón - In my suitcase I brought a hummingbird, a book about Jose Martí, a dream and a song."

At first it was our country of exile after Fidel Castro and the Cuban revolution, then it was a refuge from life's ups and downs. This episode is about that in-between time when I was just surviving and becoming a woman. This story is included in the book, Like Finding Water in the Desert. Today I’m featuring the story of a man and a donkey who became Sta. Clara’s legend. Arnaldo y Perico, a story of admiration and love. Last year when I met Arnaldo in Cuba, he told me over una tacita de café about Perico, Sta. Clara’s famous burro. Adding, he had written a book about Perico. Immediately, I fell in love with Perico and the idea of bringing these cuentos - stories, to people living in other parts of the world. You see, many stories disappear en el Olvido – in forgetfulness, a place where old things are held in stasis. Stories similar to Perico’s vanished from our collective memories as our families dealt with the imminent needs of coping in exile. I was one of those children who didn’t learn about Perico. But, six months later, I translated and published the book, so Arnaldo and I could re-introduce Perico to you and the world, and this year, we even launched the audio-book in Spanish.

This year marks the sixty-second anniversary of the Battle of Santa (Sta.) Clara, Cuba. Coffee Grounds are the memories of living through this battle at the early age of four. The Battle of Sta. Clara was a series of events in late December 1958 that led to the capture of my hometown by revolutionaries under the command of Ché Guevara - known as El Ché. The battle was a decisive victory for the rebels fighting against the regime of President Fulgencio Batista.
