We have been talking about the Fund for Veterans' Assistance Grants over the past few weeks, we continue that trend today with Veterans Treatment Courts. Instead of a jail cell, justice involved veterans are placed in an individualized program designed to address military related mental health issues that contributed to their criminal activity. Texas Veterans Commission awarded over 44 million dollars in Fund for Veterans' Assistance grants this year. A number of nonprofits are new recipients of the reimbursement grants. Texas Veterans Commission has partnerships with other veteran serving organizations across the state, the Veteran County Service Office is one of them. With 254 Texas counties, many of them rural, these offices and thepeople who staff them are a vital part of veteran services. This show features two of those people. Women Veterans have a lot of stories to tell, and the Military Women's Memorial wants to hear them. Active duty, and veterans are encouraged to upload their stories, pictures, and videos as part of the virtual exhibit. The public is invited to visit the Memorial in person in Arlington, or online.

The Texas Veterans Land Board Veteran Homes are hosting Operation Roll Call this year, a traveling exhibit featuring a replica of the Vietnam Memorial Wall and the Cost of Freedom Tribute, brought to you by the American Veterans Traveling Tribute. Dec 16 is Wreaths Across America Day, the Texas Veterans Land Board is taking part, like they do every year. We'll talk about what happens on Wreaths Across America Day and how you can get involved. The Texas Veterans Land Board (VLB) is also where Texas veterans can find low interest loans to buy land, homes and pay for home repairs. Did you know Texas Veterans Commission Claims Benefits Advisors have filed over 80 thousand PACT Act Claims? If you still have to file yours, do this first. Submit your “Intent to File” to the VA on or before August 9, 2023. That way if your claim is approved, compensation is backdated to August 2022. You get a years’ worth of retroactive pay! But only if you file the claim or the “Intent to File” on or before August 9, 2023. No need to complete the claim yet, you’ll have a year from your intent. Our Veterans Mental Health department provides excellent services to veterans, their families and mental health providers and supporters.. We offer a justice-involved veteran’s program, collaborate with local communities to prevent veteran suicide and combat veteran homelessness. We provide training in military cultural competency and educate law enforcement and first responders on deescalating veteran interactions. Additionally, we have a Military Veteran Peer Network (MVPN) led by a manager who was once helped by the network. The Austin Veteran Arts Festival, AVAFest, returns for 2023. This fall the public gets another chance to learn about veterans who have found that the road to healing is paved with their creative spirit. Our Veterans Mental Health Department offers a number of services to help veterans and their families. The Homeless Veterans Program works within local communities to improve access to resources and services to military veterans and their loved ones who are experiencing homelessness or are at-risk of becoming homeless. Women Veterans Day is June 12, celebrating the day President Truman signed the bill allowing women to join the regular US Armed Forces. It has been 75 years since that law was signed. In 2017, Governor Greg Abbott designated June 12 Women Veterans Day in Texas. Celebrations are happening all over Texas including San Antonio where TVC dropped in. Three million women have served with the U.S. Armed Forces since the American Revolution. You probably know a woman who served.The Military Women’s Memorial is giving those women and their families a place to tell their stories. The Memorial was created “to record and preserve stories that will otherwise be lost to history and unknown to future generations”. Featuring interactive exhibits, an education center and a collection of stories from women, the Memorial is in Arlington, Virginia but you can also visit virtually. AYUDA, a nonprofit that helps El Paso area veterans with home repairs and modifications, was awared a $100,000 Fund for Veterans' Assistance grant this year. October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, learn what you can about screening, diagnosis and treatment. Support groups are there for patients and survivors to meet and share their experiences. Virtual support groups allow individuals to share from wherever they are. Dianna Petrick, of the Breast Cancer Resource Center talks with, Sharron Stewart, Texas Veterans Commission Women Veterans Coordinator for South Texas about the support group offered by the Breast Cancer Resource Center. Spreading the word about Breast Cancer; early detection, treatment and support is what this month is all about. The National Breast Council Foundation has a theme, RISE! "This year we RISE to ensure every woman has access to the screenings she needs and the support she deserves. When we RISE, we Rally in Screening Everyone."

The Austin Veteran Arts Festival, (AVAFEST), 2022 begins October 12 and runs through November 12. Veterans from the Vietnam War era to post 9-11 rejoiced when the PACT Act was signed into law. The PACT Act expands VA health care and benefits for veterans exposed to burn pits and other toxic substances, including Agent Orange and radiation. Since so many veterans are affected it would be wise to start your disability claim now. A new Texas law is affecting motorists with Texas Disabled Veteran (DV) license plates. You now need to display the ISA symbol to use parking spots marked for the disabled. What is that? You may ask. We talked with a representative of the Texas Department of Motor Vehicles about the new law, he explains what disabled vets need to do, to use disabled parking spaces without getting a ticket. A service connected disability may qualify a veteran for a VA Disability Housing Grant. On this program we'll learn about the different grants, plus get info on the car allowance which pays for a disabled veteran's specially equipped vehicle.

Monday May 31, a reminder of what Memorial Day is all about, and we'll introduce you to TVC Commissioner , Mike Hernandez, Vietnam War Veteran and Purple Heart Recipient.

The Blue Water Navy (BWN) Vietnam Veterans Act of 2019 extended the presumption of herbicide exposure, such as Agent Orange, to Veterans who served in the offshore waters of the Republic of Vietnam between Jan. 9, 1962 and May 7, 1975. If that exposure led to any of the 14 VA approved service connected illnesses, these veterans are entitled to benefits. The VA has already paid out hundreds of millions of dollars to some of those veterans. We talked with the VA about this benefit and what eligible veterans should do to claim their share.

On March 29, 2021, the nation will recognize and show appreciation for the military men and women who served during the Vietnam War. Over 2.7 million Americans served in Vietnam, less than 850,000 are alive today. We continue to give Texas Vietnam Vets a book that commemorates the 50th anniversary of that war. Vietnam Vet and former Texas Veterans Commission Chairman Al Cantu shares his feelings about the book and we'll also discuss why Vietnam Vets should file disability claims for exposure to Agent Orange. African Americans have played a huge part in our military forces, there are 2.15 million African American veterans in the United States, representing around 12 percent of the total veteran population. This month Texas Veterans Commission asked some budding scholars to help us with a history lesson on some of our Black servicemembers.

This month mental health advocates, survivors, family members, faith based organizations and local, state and national agencies are working together to promote suicide prevention awareness. The Veterans Mental Health Department at Texas Veterans Commission works with licensed mental health providers, community and faith-based organizations, and agencies across the state, bringing mental health services to veterans.
