The meeting began with a discussion on the organisation's mission and inclusion efforts, considering sharpening the mission statement to enhance inclusivity in music making and mental health support for marginalised communities. Julie and Davina discussed challenges in including diverse members in Drum and Brass's core mission, emphasising the need for safe and inclusive spaces. The conversation also touched on community music, hierarchical systems, and the lack of diversity in music therapy and education. Participants highlighted the importance of inclusivity in music spaces, addressing the lack of representation for marginalised communities in classical music. Concerns were raised about the lack of diversity in music therapy and education, advocating for more inclusive practices. The meeting also covered challenges faced in band competitions, the importance of parental support in music education, and efforts to promote diversity and inclusion within brass bands. Discussions on music education emphasised the need for inclusivity and diversity in music programs, with a decision to focus on growing young musicians and seeking funding for inclusive practices. The meeting concluded with a focus on reviewing the organisation's diversity and inclusion policy, prioritising anti-racism work to enhance diversity within the music community.

In this episode we hear Julie Hoggarth, one of the directors of Drum and Brass talking about the development of a music project called Brass Inc - which she describes as an alternative style of orchestra. It is an inclusive music project which Julie runs at the Blue Jam Arts Centre in Penrith, Cumbria.
Julie is joined by Ben who she first met in a project run by 4Eden where he volunteered as a peer mentor supporting people with autism. Ben is developing his employability skills as a volunteer helper in these organisations.
Julie also tells us about two music events happening in the coming weeks.
Hello and welcome to Sounds of… a podcast created by Drum and Brass, with the support of Arts Council England. In today’s episode we hear about plans to set up a new inclusive music project in Penrith, Cumbria, supported by the Royal Mencap Society.
During the 2023 school Summer holiday, Julie Hoggarth of Drum and Brass delivered a music workshop to some of the young people involved in a Holiday and Food project (which they call the HAF project) and Julie’s work inspired Cristina Bowman from a CIC called Diff-Ability to set up an inclusive music project in Penrith with Julie as the tutor.
We hear from Cristina in this episode, and also from Ben and Connor who are peer supporters of people with autism and who are enthusiastic about the new project.

We hear from the event organiser, Dave Higson of Burneside Brass who was supported by Liz Watson and Julie Hoggarth of Drum and Brass. Julie speaks to Dave, to youth leader Rory Knowles played lead and delivered a workshop and also to some of the young people involved. We’ll also hear some of the concert the young people played at the end of their weekend together.

In today’s episode we hear John Sinclair talking to Julie Hoggarth, founder of Drum and Brass. In 2019 Julie moved from Leicester to the working class village of Tebay, in Cumbria where she has established a brass band for young people to learn to play cornets, horns and trombones, and to learn the skills needed to be part of a community. In this episode we hear the progress of the Melody Makers Band over a 5 month period and Julie outlines the ways in which she keeps the children engaged through the difficult first two years of learning to play an instrument. Her project has been supported financially by Cumbria Community Foundation, Eden Arts and Culture Development fund and Arts Council England.

Drum and Brass is a Community Interest Company whose mission is “To Do Music Differently”And one of our strategies is to introduce Children who live in inner city Leicester to the joys of playing instruments from a young age. Local Children are invited to attend different after school music sessions every day of the week with fees set at a low rate.
The project is financially supported by the Leicestershire music Hub and some Children are able to access reduced fees making the sessions affordable for all.
Having previously created episodes about the orchestra which meets on a Tuesday and the Steampunk project which runs on a Friday.
We asked our podcaster John Sinclair to visit the Woodgate Resources Center and interview the teachers and students at the other three clubs. And in this episode, you'll hear him talking to Mikey Boun who runs the samba drumming sessions on Mondays and teaches musical skills on Wednesdays and Dave Collins who teaches Children to play trumpets and other brass instruments on Thursdays.
John also talks to Sim My who, who coordinates the music sessions at the Woodgate Resources Center in Leicester.

Darren Begnor is a writer, designer and artist. He is currently nearing the end of his probation period and aiming towards a creative career. He wrote "Not for Human Consumption" about his own prison experience. This play features in the "No Bars" book and asks serious questions about prison, drugs and the choices we all make. It has been used as a resource in secondary schools and has been turned into a radio play, featuring Darren himself. Today's conversation about art, life and ambitions is typical for the two protagonists ...
In today’s episode Drum and Brass director Dainon Gorman finds out how Hari Trivedi started Drum and Brass with Julie Hoggarth back in 2013.
As well as being a graphic designer, Hari is a music teacher who plays the Indian drums called the tabla to a classical standard. Hari also produces music, plays with a few bands and also creates healing soundscapes under the name Ishan-Sattva.

In today’s episode …. John Sinclair talks to Liga Orlowski. Liga is a “cultural producer” who runs a CIC in Leicester called Buzzing Roots. Liga partnered with Julie Hoggarth of Drum and Brass to devise a project called “Music For the Queen” creating an opportunity for members of the community to celebrate the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee with music, crafts and poetry. John also talks to Popi Charitaki of Armonia Music, who ran creative workshops and lead the community celebration event at Leicester’s Westcotes Library on Sunday May 29th

Our presenters included Dr Helen Minors who is the School Head of Performing Arts and Associate Professor of Music at Kingston University and the founder and co-chair of EDI Music Studies Network UK and Carol Leeming MBE, a vocalist and vocal coach, a multi award winning multi disciplinary artist in literature, performing arts and digital media and TED-X performer and speaker - Carol is well-known on the Leicester music scene.

This episode was recorded at Leicester’s de Montfort Hall on the evening of March 5th 2022 when a special event took place, organised by Drum and Brass. It was a concert which resulted from of a collaboration between the Leicester Symphony Orchestra and a very new community orchestra called the No Bars Orchestra, set up by violin teacher and member of the LSO, Helen Butterfield, and Drum and Brass. After only 8 rehearsal sessions children who were having music lessons in local schools and through local music teachers played their own composition in the Garden Room before and during the interval of the LSO’s concert in the main hall. John Sinclair spoke to me and to parents, children, Helen Butterfield and the Lord Mayor before and after the children’s performance.

Kiz teaches people to use tools to boost their mood and leave them with a creative buzz.

Davina met Helen through the equality, diversity and inclusion in music studies network during lockdown when exploring colonialism in music. Helen is the founder and co-chair of this working group which was set up to drive change and lower barriers to music education. She is a brass instrument player and is passionate about ensuring music is accessible to all. She talks about her latest project, the Women's Musical Leadership Online Network which is one of many projects that she is involved in. Shobana Prasad (sometimes known as Soulful Shobana) is a former intelligence analyst in the British Civil Service who had the privilege and responsibility of writing and briefing on subjects of major international interest (as well as working in an active war zone). After a series of health scares in 2016 she finally understood the signals the universe was sending her and opted for a radical lifestyle change. For the last 3 years, whilst recovering, she has organically formed a publishing, events and media platform called the "soulful group" which has a simple purpose to 'unlace words and detangle life to help make the world a more soulful place'. The soulful group is part publishing house, part lifestyle brand and part social enterprise but always fully soulful.

The artist known as "Ruinbow" discovered a passion for art while serving a custodial sentence. On release, he contacted Drum and Brass via the No Bars project. We offered him some mentoring and he chose to work on ideas to market his Banksie-inspired artwork.

Cheryl Armatrading set up the AAA Foundation after the tragic death of her son Antoin Akpom. Antoin was a community youth worker who used sport to aspire to their goals and inspire young people away from crime. Cheryl continues his legacy as the Managing Director of the Antoin Akpom Achievements Foundation which offers workshops and activities for young people. Cheryl also sits on the board of the Violence Reduction Unit and says 'I am doing this not only for my son's legacy but for the youths he inspired'.
In this episode Cheryl tells us about her acting and directing career and she explains the many ways in which the AAA Foundation supports young people to tackle emotional and community issues and aspire to their goals, including the use of drama, music, film and art.

This podcast was recorded in May, shortly before the sad death of Jahmaine Davis - an inspirational person who dedicated his life to his anti-knife crime campaign "Stop the Bloodshed".
Jahmaine first worked with us when we performed "Not for Human Consumption" with students at Rawlins Academy and Millgate School. He reduced the students to tears with his stories and to a standing ovation with his rap. Jahmaine leaves behind partner Abbie and daughter Paris. Our upcoming No Bars II book will be dedicated to him and his death has prompted renewed pleas for men to share their mental health problems more widely. When Julie and I had this conversation she had recently curated an exhibition of images created by members of Leicester's Lo-Fi photography group in the Chapel Gallery, which is in Bishop St Methodist Church in Leicester. The exhibition called NoBarsMusic featured portraits of 20 local musicians from diverse backgrounds in their rehearsal spaces from across the city.
