Our Podcast covers the latest advice, support and services from Hunter Local Land Services. This includes conversations with our customers, partners and other agencies as well as relevant presentations from recent events. We provide support to customers in Animal Health, Biosecurity, agricultural management and production, natural resource management as well as connecting with services and support available to our community.
Matthew Milne from the Rural Adversity Mental Health Program - RAMHP - was a guest speaker at the 2020 Hunter LLS Livestock Forum.
He spoke to the webinar audience about minimising the stress of decision making.
This is an important conversation for us all to consider in what has been most uncertain times.
The 2020 Hunter Livestock Forum explored on-farm decision making considering the people, land and business elements through a series of free fortnightly webinars.
The aim was provide Hunter Livestock producers the strategies and tools for improved decision making in a changing world - being able to make the right decisions is critical.
It doesn’t matter what we grow or how we grow it we still need to make decisions for a sustainable enterprise and industry.

Your Bull selection is an important decision. It will impact your breeding program and business for several years.
There is a raft of technical information available to assist bull buyers with their selection process.
As a cattle breeder, doing your homework and selecting the right bull for your environment, cow herd and target markets is one of the most rewarding and profitable exercises when you get it right. Take advice from breeders and take the time to understand and utilise all the technology available.

What do an off grid robotic dairy and protecting unique wetlands have in common?
They are both recently completed projects on a family dairy farm near Bulahdelah.
Hunter Local Land Services worked with the Smith Family as they modernised their dairy to install a unique robotic milking system and redesign their paddock layout.
In the process they have undertaken a significant project to protect valuable waterways and restore wetlands on their property.
This Riparian Rehabilitation Project is funded through the NSW Government's Marine Estate Management Strategy, to reduce sedimentation and nutrients from agricultural production entering our waterways.

The Hunter’s unique Professional Wild Dog Controller Program has reached a milestone, removing more than 300 wild dogs in just under the three years since it was launched.
The program is supported by Hunter Local Land Services, the Hunter Valley Combined Wild Dog Association, Australia Wool Innovation and local land managers including Glencore, Bengalla, Yancoal, MACH Energy, Forestry NSW, National Parks and Wildlife Service and FeralScan.
The program was developed after increasing dog attacks were being reported in the Upper Hunter, particularly impacting outlying sheep properties which was affecting confidence in the local industry.
In this episode of the Hunter LLS Poddy, we talk to one of the Professional Controllers, Tim Booth about his role helping livestock producers remove problem wild dogs.
Producers must be a member of their local wild dog association to be eligible to participate in this program.
For the last 18 months all fees associated with the program have been waived, as part of Hunter Local Land Services drought support to local producers.
Landholders can report wild dog activity to Hunter Local Land Services Biosecurity team by calling 1300 795 299.
In late 2019, the Hunter Local Land Services Cultural Burn Training Project brought together Aboriginal community members in the region to share Cultural Burning knowledge and practices, together with Indigenous Fire Practitioner Victor Steffenson and Fire Sticks Alliance.
Undertaken on Wanaruah Nations Aboriginal Corporations land at Paynes Crossing in the lower Hunter Valley, the objective was to provide a fire break for the property and care for native flora and fauna.
Thanks to the Wonnarua/Wanaruah Elders and community for their participation, and allowing the project to be undertaken on their traditional lands.

Kelvin is passionate about improving the management of Aboriginal land and took part in the project to learn more about Cultural burning so he can begin applying it to the land he manages.

In this episode, Hunter LLS Pastures Officer David Deane chats with Agronomist Kyle Ropa about the Winter seeding happening at the Singleton Pastures Demonstration site.
Kyle owns and manages the site which is run in partnership with Hunter LLS and Farmers Warehouse.
Normally customers are invited to the site for a pasture walk through, but unfortunately due to COVID-19 we can't hold open days currently.
We will provide an update from the site and progress with the different varieties in mid June.
