In this episode of Sparks by Ignium Phil Rose talks to Irene Riad about here journey from Saudi Arabia to Albania, and how she has used her experiences to create the Self Mastery Coaching Institute. They also discuss the concept of legacy and how it can be used to create a meaningful life.

Irene’s journey of self-discovery and exploration helped her create a coaching model that integrated mind, body, and soul. She created the Mosaic model, which is a metaphor and acronym for mind, body, soul, alignment, integration, and consciousness. This model helps people to interact with their own self to achieve their goals and live their legacy. The Mosaic model was inspired by Irene's life setbacks and her journey of creating a new identity.

After a more reflective journey to discover what she wanted to do in the future Irene created the renewal process based on the Mosaic framework to help people recognize their voice, examine their state, notice their emotions, engage with safety and choice, widen their self agency, and lead from their divine self. She believes that understanding the mind, body, and soul is essential to help people flourish and master their true self.

Irene discusses the power of becoming and how it can be applied to business to drive creativity and innovation. • E.g. To increase revenue by 20% what do you need to do?

• Talk frequently about and measure your top priorities

• What tools do you have that enable you to work on the business? (compared with working IN the business)

• Where are you Checking IN rather than checking UP on people?

• Do you (or your team) hide behind your excuses for not hitting your goals? What are you tracking and what’s the psychological impact of goal tracking?

• Dan Pink on employing ‘humans’ – they’re slightly better smelling horses

• What is it that a top team has… a mission, an intention with a carefully thought through culture

• People need two things fundamentally – to understand what I do matters and feel that I am part of a community

• Why measure purpose – to help you know what is and isn’t working!

• But what to measure? To understand how are people behaving in the company

• Do your people feel the organisation stands for something beyond profit?

• You also need to measure the activators in the business: TRUST and OWNERSHIP

• Purpose is about a ‘cultural activation process’

• “It is in the gift of businesses to solve societies problems”

• (most) business owners want to create a healthier planet…

• By engaging people you will increase productivity by 20% and the asset value of the organisation!

• The facts speak for themselves… a 1% increase in ‘Purpose’ results in a 0.9% increase in eNPS

• … and a 0.8% increase in retention which equates to a 20-30% decrease in staff turnover

• Patagonia’s Purpose “we are in business to save the home planet”

• How can you look for opportunities to authentically demonstrate your purpose

• Courageous, authentic and sustainable – that’s the key

• How we can encourage our people to step up

• Purpose and perception

• Purpose is the fundamental set of beliefs about why we exist

• Anthropy – the work of John O’Brien MBE “We have a unique moment in time, to change the national narrative, consider the qualities we live by and build a more equitable, sustainable, successful Britain."

This is part three of a three part podcast with Natural Netwalking founder, Jackie Jarvis. We recorded it in January 2022 and now as I listen to it with the War continuing in Ukraine it feels strange reflecting on some of the conversation. We talked about how we can take responsibility for what’s going on around us and I now wonder how true that really if you are in a war zone? I hope you find strength in the conversation and find energy from the words at this time and in the future.
(Apologies to listeners as the sound on the episode isn’t what we normally put out… please forgive me and my recording capability!)

(Some of) The main points for listeners:

· Walking the Camino trails during the pandemic… the result of Jackie’s intention ‘setting’ – ‘somehow it just seems to happen’

· Setting your context – what’s yours for the future?

· FAST Goals… Setting Intentions…

· Jackie’s experience on the Via Del Plata – intention vs goals vs plans

· Set your intention and ‘surrender’ to the ‘How’

· Energy – what does it mean to you?

· ‘I intend to’- lessons from L. David Marquet – “see yourself doing it”

· Where’s the resistance that’s getting in the way of your journey

· ‘I create the WHOLE of my reality’ – what does that mean for you?

· Intention is a simple way of creating the reality of how I want to be living

· With head up we can see the next step on the path – sometimes we just need to keep on walking…

· Sometimes we test ourselves even when we think we are at out limits

· When you’re alone you have to carry your own pack and rely on yourself … and sometimes that about believing you can do it and taking small steps.

· You are capable of more than you thing you are…

· We meet the people on our route that we most need to… so be aware of who you talk to… no one on the route owes you or owns you…

· Who do you need support from right now? How can you find that team?

· Who’s your team of ‘pilgrims’ on the path, all walking on the same path in the same direction…

· Finally, find a coach, a guider, someone to keep you on track…

Phil Rose talks to Karie Kaufmann about vision, planning, creating a theme and working towards that to build your business. We also discuss systems and how to empower and trust your team to work to support and scale the business. Karie Kaufmann is a master coach and facilitator, having coached over 1,000 high growth companies since 2005. Her clients have achieved double and triple-digit growth in profitability, accomplished through implementation of the Scaling Up framework and Rockefeller Habits. She helps business leaders work through roadblocks and growing pains, build amazing teams, and enable sustainable growth… all while enjoying the ride.

Key Points in the Show:

• Scaling Up your business with Karie

• Karie started in her own family business and moved to coaching in 2005

• Karie helps people ‘like her dad’ build their business and achieve their dream business

• It was an honour working with her dad

• If I could go back to 1982 when my parents set up their business there are so many things I could do to change the outcomes they achieved including creating lasting value

• In the beginning no one knew what coaching was… education was needed to show that it wasn’t ‘just for broken businesses’ – in fact every business needs a coach

• One of the best things you can do is hire a coach… Eric Schmidt (ex) of Google

• Scaling Up your business with a coach

• How to replicate without the wheels falling off… if you’re a cyclist is about maintaining control as you go faster…

• More businesses die of indigestion than starvation

• Avoiding the phase that goes from scale up to screw up

• What do people say / think first… carrot and stick – they know the constraints and know they can achieve more – but aren’t sure how to get there

• Dis-satisfaction with progress towards the vision

• It’s not just about 10% better year on year…

• Top Tips for building businesses in the future…

o Having compelling goals and a vision

o Creating a usable plan to build the business proactively rather than just doing doing doing

o Setting a theme* for the year – what’s the one word or phrase for the year that best describes the year I’ve created – what would yours be

o *Theme / focus / mantra to guide you (for the year, quarter, week, day…)

o If we were having this conversation one year from now what will have changed to enable you to achieve your goals / vision

• What are the driving thoughts or reminders you want to put in place to help you stay on track – e.g. “Life is a collection of experiences” and then how does that influence your thinking as you go about your day

• Big Doors swing on small hinges… what are your rituals that drive your success

• What’s your default as a business founder… business first? Family first? Sacrifice is needed? Personal vs business goals?

• How often do you think you need to get it perfect before you move forwards?

• What are your priorities – that’s what you’ll focus on

• Put holiday in your diary FIRST… even if it’s just a small one

• We know time expands to fill the space available… so how much time do you give it?

• What are your personal goals? How do you make time for those things?

• Your expenses grow in line with your earnings…

• How to coach those ‘yes butters’…

o Transform the mindset “If you believe you can or believe you can’t…, either way you’re probably right”

o If you had to do X you would find time… so use that premise to make time

o It is possible when you think about it

o What needs to be in place to make that possible?

o Be intentional about the way you grow the business

• What to do when you believe ‘no one’s as good as me at doing my / this job’… and how to manage that thinking

o If someone can do it 80% as good as you that’s ok, they can learn… and maybe that’s all that’s needed

• What aren’t you doing while you are doing this thing…

• Enjoyment vs skill – where do you as a business leader / owner need to be working? High skill and high enjoyment

• Get functional in your business – do you really need to be doing that task? Especially If you’re the owner ask “do you really need to be doing that task?”

• What’s the value of your time? Weigh up the time vs money equation

• Quarterly planning gives focus in bite size chunks and allows for course correction every 90 days

• A plan is a living breathing document – keep it clear and visible

• A pan is never perfect but a lot more gets done when you have one

• Strategic thinking vs execution planning – 2 separate activities

• What are your chess moves for the long term? Now what are your short term moves?

• Focus on the team – unemployment is low “the great resignation” is here how do you maintain and build your team? Involve them in the goals and decisions. Help them to know their skills and opinions are being used for the greater purpose of the business – and not just to make more money

• Legs turning while I’m learning (my quote to learn while on my spin bike!)

• One bit of advice… be patient… it takes time to build a business

• Plant the seeds, nurture them and water them…

Phil Rose talks to Michael Tanner about building leadership so that people genuinely want to follow. From his 28 years experience in both military and corporate roles Michael has seen what it takes to truly lead people – and it’s not about rank, title or authority – it’s about true Servant leadership.

Key Points in the Show:

• Servant Leadership and the servant coach – the most influential form of leadership

• What military leadership teaches us – it’s not about rank, it’s about caring for the people you are leading, to ensure they can succeed

• Leadership and followership – and how creating a willingness to follow is key

• People do what I ask them to do because they want to vs doing it out of fear

• Blood, sweat and tears vs doing it for money – purpose led leadership

• Purpose is about a shared goal that needs to be communicated

• It’s about togetherness – we’re in their together…

• Management and Leadership – and how to measure effectiveness

• Management as a Noun – a person place or thing vs leading the people. You can manage inventory, or buildings, but you need to lead your people

• Measuring Effectiveness – how is it traditionally measured… you can’t change the score at the end of the game… Attrition is a rear view mirror measure…

• The Leadership Equation: Credibility, Competence, Motive and Relationship

• The most important is motive… mathematically – and practically – do your team perceive your motive is selfish or self-less?

• How will your team score you vs. how you score yourself?

• Relationship… is also most important – at a personal level. How well do you know your team members? Really?

• Why’s he asking me to do that? … but I have a good relationship with my leader so I can understand it’s important to do this task…

• Proximity and Distance… how do you get close, while also maintaining distance from your team? Share what you feel appropriate to generate a deeper relationship

• Patrick Lencioni’s ‘5 Dysfunctions of a Team’ and the ‘Personal Histories’ exercise

• “The Leadership Challenge” – Credibility is the foundation of success – track record speaks volumes

• Competence vs Credibility – how do you build each?

• Credibility comes from lots of ‘small wins’ – always do what you say you will do… and that creates a track record (Integrity)

• The equation enable leaders to identity where they can improve – relative to self not others

• The best… and the worst leaders… title and authority didn’t make them the best… ‘It’s nothing to do with title and position’

• What’s the basis of your competence, i.e. are you a good sales person with a need for management competence and training

• What gets measured gets done…

• The future of leadership 2022 and beyond: people don’t generally leave bad companies, they leave bad leaders… The rise of servant leadership – that’s the power

• Advice for your younger self: Focus on Motive! Are you selfish or self-less?

• Express appreciation and give credit – move from about me to about them

• What I’ve learned: constantly and consistently build your knowledge: Leadership is a journey not a destination

Darryl Bates-Brownsword is on a mission to build the ‘exit industry’ in the UK. Originating from Australia Darryl has been in the UK since 2005 helping business owners grow the value of their business. He realised that many business owners who wanted to sell their businesses (prior to working with Succession Plus) went through an earn out period that often never came to fruition. This lead DBB to found Succession Plus in the UK based on the model developed by his colleague, Craig West, in Australia. Darryl’s key message is for business owners to ‘LEAVE on their terms’ and this is key to the story… you can spend 3 years working for someone in an earn out or you can spend 3 years preparing your business prior to sale so you can get the ‘most from your life’s work’. There are lots of elements that potentially derail and devalue your business so it’s worth looking at how to increase value ahead of the time you want to sell. If you sell and then end up on an earn out you are effectively working to someone else’s rules. It’s a choice!
Key Points in the Show:

• Succession Plus started in Australia 2009

• Planning for an exit helps ensure business owners can leave ‘on their terms’

• Often business owners have ‘all their eggs in one basket’ and are therefore reliant on the financial success of the sale…

• … but what if you could plan and structure better so that you de risked your future?

• Working on the business not in it – we all know that but… don’t need that you need to prepare the business exit in advance so owners can ‘exit on their terms’

• Building a business is a mix of culture AND commercial

• Part of the journey is about creating the ‘culture within the business’ – the energy, mood, tone and pulse of the organisation is set by the leadership… are you a bricklayer or a cathedral builder?

• The key to value is systemising the business and building a culture with value.

• It’s the secret sauce in any business that makes it really valuable – and that’s often the intangible things such as supplier lists, contracts, staff systems, training plans, processes etc

• How do you measure the impact of culture… consider how it reduces staff turnover… what’s that worth?

• Culture is lead from the top… it’s both the minimum standards and the way we ‘do things round here’

• Purpose + Passion = Profit

• Selling based on proposition IP vs product IP…

• “How do you like your steak” and how will you feel when you get the ‘sizzle’

• Structure and systems reduce variability which reduces vulnerability

• There’s a gap in the market today for exit planning and that’s where succession plus fits in

• 10-40% of businesses prepared for sale never actually get sold… so this is about maximising your chances of success

• Most businesses that sell impose an ‘earn out’ on the previous owner (of 3 years) so why not spend 3 years ‘up front’ structuring the business so you can sell on your terms!

• Finding the missing link you need to increase your chance of exit success

• Darryl offers 3 tips for business exit success… and they revolve around planning!

This is part 2 of a 3 part podcast with the walking coach Jackie Jarvis. In this episode Phil Rose talks to Jackie about her experience and learnings again from walking the Camino trails in Spain. We recorded this on January 6th 2022 as a follow up to the previous episodes. We set out to cover 6 keys points, and, as usual, the conversation developed further so there is a follow on conversation which will come out soon. We cover lots of topics that can be applied in your business and in your personal life. This is very much a balance of culture vs commercial and we know that the most ‘successful’ businesses are those that fully engage employees so they come to work with their full energy rather than ‘just for the money’.

(Some of) The main points for listeners to listen out for:

· How walking alongside someone can develop a better rapport even if we don’t ‘know’ the other person

· How growth comes from the space between the ‘noise’ when we make time to reflect

· The learnings from keeping a diary on our journey…

· How meditation is beneficial for busy business owners…

· Remembering why we do anything… and why that’s important

· Asking the right questions to find a way forwards as we reflect

· When we’re in the ‘fog’ we need to trust the process…

· Gratitude helps you gain insight…

· … and the fog will lift and allow the light to shine (and the parallel with our thinking)

· What’s the thought you want to ‘hear’ and how do you want to be feeling…

· What can you do differently to help you take the first step… change your thinking, change your outlook

· How lucky are you in life… are you in the lucky camp?

· If you keep a journal what are the common messages you read? How do you respond to them?

· Chase Money and money runs, chase success money comes…

· And how much do you need… want…

· What’s your why… focus on your purpose and what’s really important to you…

· How are you living your own message?

· Take time to stop talking… start with a blank canvas and see what you can create… walking into the fog… and seeing what you can see…

· And on to episode 3…

  • How to get the right people ‘on the bus’ – it’s all about relationship
  • How taking a ‘risk’ may just be about maximising an opportunity – it’s all about your perspective!
  • Working and managing a business in Abu Dhabi – and how the Emirate’s approach to growth has helped Luke build his business
  • The change in vision as a business grows – you never can actually ‘fully’ plan what the future will look like

What is coaching and why do people 'need' coaching.

Helen Isacke from the Trusted Coach Directory talks with Phil Rose about the world of coaching. Coaching is about asking questions and being curious for the answers. It's about creating a dialogue to help people increase their self-awareness. People choose to work with a coach typically because they are aware of what coaching is and are ready to do the 'inner' work to progress in their life.

In this episode with Helen we start with the question “What is coaching?” and “Why do people choose to work with a coach.”

Helen gives her views on the key things people need to look for when selecting a coach to work with including qualifications, supervision and testimonials.

1-2 What is / isn't coaching?

Coaching is NOT training, consulting, mentoring, solution giving, therapy, counselling

Coaching IS Talking to someone who truly listens, being curious

03:30 Why do people choose to work with a coach.

Inner work

Time management training programmes

Understanding how we operate as people

Drive to find out what's driving their behaviour

5 “That's how I am” - i.e. I'm not a detailled person

05:45 An issue of people getting promoted to management

07:50 Get to the root cause of the issue

Identifying Values and Beliefs

11 In the past can you fix someone

Coach 1st to prepare people 1st for promotion

11:30 Companies develop their leaders with more of a coaching style now

13 How to get the most value from coaching:

Set the outcomes

Makes sure it’s not (just) monetary

14 Start with end in Mind

What does success look like

Asking the question “What would it take to make this a 10/10”

16:30 Positioning of coaching

17:30 What to look for when selecting a coach

Experience of working with similar coachees

i.e. / service leadership

The coach needs to understand the role and stress the person is under

19 CPD - Supervision is essential

500 formal coaching hours to gain ICF PCC

19:45 ICF Coach accreditation is one approach

References are important

We talk about building a creative business that is more than ‘just’ the creative artist owner. Paul created his business as a portrait photographer after gaining a degree in industrial design followed by a PHD in neural computing, and an early career as a business consultant. He fell in love with the design way of thinking early in his career as a way of merging his love of creativity with a way of earning a living.

This podcast takes us on a journey to understand the way Paul created his business to build his brand based on a love of photography and an eye for great portrait photographs. He carries the mantra of “think like a business act like an artist” as a way of maintaining his art while building the brand. His intend at the beginning was to build a business that could be sold. He knew that the ‘product’ was him. And that lead to a realisation that in building the business he was the ‘pinchpoint.

He realised early on that people weren’t buying into the brand… they were buying into him… as an artist. In building the value of his business most ‘artists’ struggle with building extensions to their brand because the value is in the artist. He has created books (Mastering Portrait Photography - https://amzn.to/2JN7h6S) and, off the back of that a course ‘Mastering Portrait Photography’ (https://masteringportraitphotography.com) that provides training for portrait photographers. He hosts his own podcast ‘Mastering Portrait Photography’ (https://masteringportraitphotography.com/podcasts) – which has grown to be ‘almost bigger than the course’.

Purpose is the thing that brings a tear to your eye and fully engages you in every sense in your business.

We talk about how to create an amazing experience and how to ‘evoke’ a memory of the time through his photographic talent. Paul knows that people come to him ‘to feel great’.

In the same way Raymond Blanc describes himself as ‘just a cook’ Paul, with all his success still says he’s ‘just a photographer’.

In the process of building value in your business so you can create the life you want now and in the future. Key to this is creating systems in your life and business to enable you to achieve what you want. In this episode we talk about ‘clearing the fog’ to enable you to know what systems are needed.
When discuss that all models are wrong, and some are useful. This helps people clearly map out their plans so that you can ‘roll with the punches’ (following on from the Mike Tyson quote).
The key in modelling is to recognise the choices you / we make and then being comfortable knowing you have made that choice. It’s sometimes as simple as deciding what you want: time or money…
Once again, we come back to discussing the way that systemising your business also leads you to building a business that can, if you choose, run without you.
The difference between a growth business and a lifestyle business is a key choice. Some start as lifestyle and then ‘switch’ to growing a business that is not just about them the essential element is to know which you want and where you are on the journey.
We also discuss the idea of a ‘family constitution’ This includes how you can sit down with your family and identify how we ‘do’ money. As we build wealth it’s worth checking on the assumptions we have around legacy and what ‘kids’ expect in the future.
Finally we talk about the tips Alasdair has for business owners when talking about money and wealth creation – especially around your own personal expectations and wishes.

• What if’s cause anxiety and stress, consider a change in mindset to “What is”
• Stress reduces effectiveness and resiliency response
• If we took responsibility for making things as we want them to be…to change things…we are more likely to be effective and successful in creating the change we are looking for.
• Hoping for something to happen is completely ineffective…there is no action associated with hope. It is an inert mindset.
• Take a step back and see your reality as it is now….what are the factors creating that reality? How would you like to change it? Break it down, and pragmatically step through the actions you can take to make that change you are looking for.
• Taking control, reduces anxiety and builds resilience. Resilience is built through experiencing things…if you only hope, and don’t ‘do’ or ‘experience’ you risk lacking resilience. Your ability to cope is enhanced is you have experienced something similar before.
• Set realistic expectations, plan for the future you want to create, keeping perspective of the present, and how you can build on it.
• Empowerment is the tool here. You are creating a fantasy world which you are hoping will achieve, you are actually disempowering yourself from creating the real world you can achieve.
• Macro example: Climate change – example….when you let go of hope, you see the reality of the situation, which allows you take control of the situation and do something about it.
• Micro example – on a yacht, seeing a storm coming, sit there doing nothing, or go and get the main sheet in and prepare yourself for the conditions as they are.

So what does this mean for us, coming out of Lockdown?
• Assumption from leaders that their people know what the expectations are of them, and a vision of what is going to happen. BUT this isn’t necessarily the case. Need to give people a realistic vision of what is going to happen, help them prepare for it, and make their own choice as to whether they stick with you, or not. Yacht – if skipper doesn’t communicate on a daily basis, on the situation is. Like Boris – everything is changing so quickly, need to keep communicating everyday and checking people are still onboard.

• Lots of people have said that this last period has been an opportunity to consider how we might want to change the way we do things, the way we love our lives and balance work, how we work, where we work etc…. many will go back to work with the "expectation" that things will be different / better / or just the possibility of better.

• Treating people as adults – empowering them to make their own decisions based on being informed as to the actual situation and realistic options.

• How do leaders engage with their followers now to gauge what needs 'fixing'? Dashed expectations are a way of reducing resilience very quickly. A well communicated strategy for change will enable many to be resilient to the conditions they cannot control.

• This is super important for leaders - it give them control over the new culture they are trying to create for themselves and their teams. There is an opportunity to break bad habits on a broader organisational level, rather than just on a personal one. This is a chance to push the reset button, but many will return to 'normal' and that normal may be toxic.

• Hoping things will change, won’t cut it… leaders need to take responsibility to make change happen.

• Then perhaps something on habitual group behaviours and how to change them?
