Megan is a world traveler who has lived in over 40 countries while working remotely from her laptop for 7+ years. Over on YouTube, Megan is obsessed with sharing practical travel hacks and no-nonsense tips to empower others to turn their own travel dreams into a reality. In 2022, Megan grew her YouTube channel [Portable Professional] to 70,000 subscribers, racked up 8M hours of watch time, and earned over $100,000 in YouTube income – all while working a full-time job and traveling the world.
Megan has had such an interesting journey on YouTube. Video and storytelling was something she was passionate about, but she never felt like she had something to talk about. It wasn’t until she had some remote work and travel opportunities after graduating from university that she realized that there were a lot of “tech bros” doing the digital nomad thing, but not many solo women, and there definitely weren’t any doing what she was doing. She saw a hole in a niche. She realized that she did have something interesting to talk about. She did have an angle and experience. That prompted her to start her channel in 2019. Today, her channel provides straight-to-the-point travel tips and hacks.
“That first $100 paycheck from YouTube was more important than any paycheck I have ever received in my life.”
In this episode we talk about…* How Megan got started on YouTube * Megan’s quick journey to monetization * How the Covid-19 pandemic affected Megan’s travel channel * Megan’s Youtube ultimatum * How Megan turned her channel around * Avoiding YouTube’s shiny objects * How Megan was able to monetize a small channel * How Megan elevated her standards for brand deals and sponsored videos * How to preserve your mental health as a content creator * Dealing with negative comments
“Figure out something that you actually care about, that you could see yourself talking about 5 years from now, and start creating content about it.”

Michelle Fong is a makeup artist, stylist, and fashion expert from Southern California. Her talent is bringing out the best in others with her styling and makeup tips, or just by bringing good energy to a room. She is a mom, an entrepreneur, and a student of life.
It’s always such a pleasure to feature my bootcamp students on the podcast. I love sharing the highs and lows of their journeys and celebrating their successes! Michelle’s social media journey started by doing lives on Periscope (who remembers periscope!?), but then decided to transition to YouTube. She got serious about her channel at the end of 2020 and decided to invest in my Zero to Influence Youtube Bootcamp. She was looking for accountability, guidance, objective eyes on her channel, and to get strategic to get the most out of her channel.
When she joined the bootcamp, she had between 7000 and 8000 subscribers. Now, she has nearly 19k!
“I wanted to do whatever I could to make the growth of my channel not just faster but more meaningful, so that everything that I do has a purpose.”
In this episode we talk about…* How Michelle got started on YouTube * Mindset barriers when it comes to YouTube * Investing in her channel by joining the Bootcamp * The sacrifices that come with going all in on YouTube * The importance of accountability * Collaboration in creating thumbnails * Michelle’s Bootcamp breakthroughs * Going viral on YouTube * Navigating brand deals
“I had to be serious about YouTube and treat it like a business.”

Jessica Kobeissi is a Lebanese-American photographer from Detroit, Michigan who works as a portrait and fashion photographer in addition to creating digital content on her YouTube channel. With a BFA in Graphic Design, she worked at a marketing agency as a designer for 2 years. After being laid off from her job, she switched gears to become a photographer full time. With 120+ million views, she is the #1 female photographer on Youtube and has created several popular viral photography series such as “4 Photographers Shoot The Same Model” and “Taking Pictures of Strangers”. Her photography has appeared in NBC News, BBC, CNN, Cosmopolitan, The Sun, Buzzfeed, DailyMail, and The Mirror to name a few.
Jessica started off in graphic design… on Neopets. How many millennials out there remember Neopets!? She decided to pursue graphic design in college and earned her BFA, but during college, she started getting into photography, which she ended up pursuing as a full-time career. She started her YouTube channel 10 years ago doing graphic design and photoshop tutorials for editing pictures. Her channel took off after a viral video in 2016, but now that she’s been on YouTube for awhile, she’s finding that the struggle is REAL when it comes to figuring out what content to create!
“A lot of YouTubers realize the content they used to make is no longer working from them… and what do you do?”
In this episode we talk about…* A design career that started on Neopets * How Jessica got started on YouTube * How her channel evolved into a photography channel * What happens when what used to be successful for you is no longer working for your channel? * Experimenting as a content creator * Balancing keeping your old audience and your new audience happy with different kinds of content * Starting a second channel: should you do it? * You never know when a video could blow up! * How to keep going as a content creator * Jessica’s biggest struggles as a YouTuber * How to maintain your mental health as a content creator * Jessica’s YouTube superpower * Jessica’s advice for anyone looking to start or grow their channel
“You never know when your content is going to go viral or people will start being interested. Don’t give up.”

Leonie Barlow a.k.a the Style Insider is a 56-year-old journalist who spent over 20-years editing some of New Zealand’s top selling women’s lifestyle titles. She spent 7 years as an editor of New Zealand’s largest fashion magazine, Fashion Quarterly. She left her magazine career 13 years ago to spend more time with her sons. Leonie went ALL IN on her YouTube channel this year, and never looked back.
Leonie started her career as a content creator as a blogger, and she was actually one of the first bloggers in New Zealand. A lot of her blogs featured video content, and she was utilizing YouTube to host her videos. A few years later, she realized that Youtube was more than just a place to host videos, and it was actually its own platform. Leonie loves a challenge, but what started as a pipe dream grew into something beyond her wildest dreams.
“Manage your expectations and don’t compare yourself to others.”
In this episode we talk about…* How Leonie got started on YouTube * Dabbling in different niches * What do you do as a fashion creator located in the southern hemisphere when seasons are different? * Figuring out what videos to create: do you create what your audience likes or create what YOU want to create? * The kinds of videos that do well on Leonie’s channel * Making fashion inclusive and accessible * Leonie’s biggest YouTube struggles * Comparison is the thief of joy * Leonie’s YouTube superpower * Leonie’s #1 piece of advice for YouTube creators
“Anyone can do it. It does require time and commitment unlike any other social media platform, but if you’re committed, and you’re willing to put in the work, it will happen.”

The Secret Weapon Against YouTube Haters and Trolls: The YouTube Power Hour Podcast 386Power up your mind, create from confidence, and dazzle on camera with my ALL NEW Capture Your Confidence course! Capture Your Confidence is the complete step-by-step system that will help you bulletproof your mind against the negativity, and unleash your inner it-factor so you can confidently uplevel the way you look and feel on camera.
How do you deal with negative comments and trolls on YouTube?
As a YouTube strategist and coach, I talk to mostly women all day every day about YouTube: everything from titles, thumbnails, topics, you name it! One thing that comes up time and time again, especially for larger channels (though the fear of it is more present in smaller channels) is getting haters and trolls. Part of the price you pay for Youtube success or any online platform is that you will get unsolicited feedback, and some of it won’t be very nice. When you put yourself out there, you’ll meet a lot of people who will love you… but there will be others who won’t.
So how can you deal with it? How do you not let it debilitate you? What’s the secret? Having a consistent gratitude practice.
We as humans tend to think that things are way worse than they are, and we tend to focus on the negative, which then spirals and snowballs. One negative comment can hijack your mind, even in a sea of thousands of positive ones. So how does gratitude help? It blocks all those negative, toxic emotions, like envy, resentment, fear, insecurity, and regret. Gratitude is extremely powerful. It’s been studied and proven to help combat negativity, as long as you’re consistent with it.
By building resilience day in and day out, you’ll start to be unbothered by the negative comments and trolls, and having a consistent gratitude practice every day is how you get there.

3 Ways to Boost Your Youtube Camera Confidence: The YouTube Power Hour Podcast 384Power up your mind, create from confidence, and dazzle on camera with my ALL NEW Capture Your Confidence course! Capture Your Confidence is the complete step-by-step system that will help you bulletproof your mind against the negativity, and unleash your inner it-factor so you can confidently uplevel the way you look and feel on camera.
Over the years, I’ve worked with over a thousand video creators, and what’s the one thing that comes up a lot? Confidence. Confidence is a HUGE indicator of whether or not someone will be successful as a video creator, but camera confidence is something a lot of creators struggle with. Maybe you have enough confidence and motivation to get started, but as soon as you hit record, you feel like you’re not your most confident self. Maybe you freeze. Maybe you watch it back and you realize that it isn’t really you.
How do you get more confidence? How do you showcase that personality and charisma that you see other creators having? Confidence has a snowball effect: the more confidence you have, the better you are in front of the camera you are, the more interesting, dynamic, magnetic and charismatic you are, and then more people want to watch you. The more people subscribe and watch your videos, the more subscribers you get, and so on and so forth.
So what’s the secret? How are successful content creators with hundreds of thousands–even millions–of subscribers achieving this level of success? I feel like it boils down to three things.
Every single time you film, you brainstorm an idea, you edit, you create a video, you get better, and the better you become, the more confidence you have. The more confident you are, the more successful you become, and then it loops over again, because the more success you see, the more confidence you get.
Having a resilient and strong mindBy not allowing the fears, insecurities, and negative self-talk get to you, you’re protecting yourself. If you allow these things to permeate, it’s very difficult to perform in front of a camera in a confident way. Sure, you can fake it until you make it, and sometimes that helps, but your mindset and your thought patterns have a HUGE impact on your overall confidence. Your internal dialogue needs to be positive in order for you to be your best version on camera: the version that people want to watch, that people are captivated by, that people want to be friends with, that people want to subscribe to. Having resilience and strength against both internal and external negativity is a HUGE factor in being successful on camera.
Having a strong mission……also known as your “why.” When you have a strong mission, it gives you something to focus on other than yourself. When you have something greater than yourself, and you have a desire to make an impact on the world and on a certain group of people you want to help, that mission becomes greater than your fears and insecurities. If you have a larger purpose, that can drive you, and help you to not focus as much as yourself. Don’t allow those fears to creep into your head, because if you do, you’re doing a disservice to the people you want to help by letting insecurity get in the way of your mission to help people.
So much of being confident has to do with your mindset. Interested in improving your confidence and mindset? CLICK HERE to get the ALL NEW Capture Your Confidence Course!

One Million YouTube Subscribers and Feeling Lost without a Purpose: Isimeme Edeko’s Journey Towards Self-Discovery: The YouTube Power Hour Podcast 381
“It’s not about the numbers and the views, it’s about the impact and the message.”
Ready for a fast & easy YouTube plan of action that really works? Get started TODAY with a customized, fool-proof YouTube action plan that will attract more viewers, more subscribers and more revenue with the YouTube Audience Attraction System!
From natural hair and wigs to self care/ hygiene routines, girl talks, late night vent sessions, and more… you’re going to see all the eclectic, multifaceted sides of Isimeme Edeko on her YouTube channel. Isi is revolutionizing how we as women, think, evolve, cater to, and nurture ourselves throughout our journey of womanhood by transparently documenting her own.
Isimeme Edeko started her YouTube channel 7 years ago when she was a junior in college. At the time, she was a student-athlete on a full ride track & field scholarship. As an athlete, she felt insecure when she would scroll through social media and didn’t really see anyone who looked like her. That, coupled with the increasingly impossible societal norms and standards for women, inspired her to create that space. She started her channel in February of 2016, and graduated in December 2017, and at the time, she had no idea it would ever become a career. She was studying hospitality and planned on being an event planner, but by the time she graduated, she was able to do social media as a full-time career.
As a Virgo, Isi is naturally prone to structure, organization, and attention to detail, so before she even posted a video, she was researching and observing other creators on YouTube. She started as a “nobody.” She had no social media presence really at all, and she wanted to start creating content as a hobby, but she never wanted to niche herself in. There was a lack of Type 4 hair representation at the time on YouTube, so when she started making content as a young college-aged woman, she was kind of filling that hole and it really resonated with young girls and women. She also started a series of “girl talk” videos that did incredibly well. Though Isi has a wonderful relationship with her mom, she understands that many girls and women don’t, so she was able to deliver those “big sister” conversations about health, relationships, sex, and personal hygiene that so many girls and women never got.
Isi’s hobby blew up, and she hit 100,000 subscribers before she graduated, but having that kind of influence in people’s lives was terrifying. She recognizes the responsibility she now has as an influencer and takes it very seriously. She is intentional with her content. She’s even met some viewers who have been watching her since they were in grade school!
“We’re stronger together than we are apart. Two minds are always better than one… you are stronger with the right person.”
Power CoupleIsi and her husband are college sweethearts, and he’s been one of the main drivers throughout her journey. She credits much of her success to having that strong support system. Now, they have what she calls “the trifecta;” they juggle 3 accounts: Isi’s brand, their brand together, and Josh’s brand.
Isi and Josh started their couples channel/brand about a year after Isi started her channel. They were both full-time student athletes, and Josh had goals to one day play in the NFL. He struggled with post-grad depression; something a lot of people can relate to, especially athletes. During the pandemic, they decided to immerse themselves in their brand and ended up accumulating enough followers and income for him to quit his job by November 2020. He’s now finding his own voice and elevating his own social media accounts, where he has partnered with huge brands like Nike and Dick’s Sporting Goods.
Josh is almost the creative director and producer behind Isi’s channel; almost like the manager before the manager. His natural creativity is an asset in helping her with editing and scripting. What I love most about Isi and Josh is what a team they are, and how much stronger they are together. When one of them is winning, they’re both winning.
“I started YouTube as a hobby, it became a career, and then I found myself without a hobby.
The Ups and DownsIn 2019, Isi was invited to YouTube Black: an event that focuses on the top performing black creators on YouTube. While she was so excited and grateful for the opportunity, she still struggled with imposter syndrome and wondered if she even belonged there with so many other successful creators. The world of social media is visual and can be materialistic, and so she felt inferior to the people around her. She vowed to never feel that way again, so when she got home, to cushion her ego and to feel worthy of being in those spaces, she started buying more things and focused on her image. But in doing that, her content suffered. She started to feel inauthentic and superficial. She was living in an answered prayer, yet somehow feeling unhappy. She felt empty; like there was a void. She was living everything her college self thought was “making it.” She grew organically from nothing, but suddenly, it was no longer fulfilling. She wasn’t feeling aligned. There was such a disconnect that she got to a point where she didn’t even know what kind of content to create.
When Isi partnered with Hulu’s Hair Tales, something clicked back in. She realized that this was all so much bigger than her. The things we do and say matter. There is often a mask that content creators have that shows their lives as perfect… but they aren’t. Social media is curated. We show only what we want to show, and usually, that’s the very best. It’s exhausting to keep up with that kind of performance when things aren’t going well behind-the-scenes.
After many hiatuses due to that exhaustion and burnout, she realized that when your hobby becomes your career, suddenly you no longer have a hobby. Your life becomes content. What is ok to just be your own? Where is the line between sharing your life on social media and keeping some of those experiences just for you? She learned to have balance and boundaries.
“I’ve always tried to make sure my videos and my content had a message behind it that brought value and impact to people’s lives.”
Final ThoughtsIf your content is your life, and it’s not getting enough views and likes, it makes a creator think their life is inadequate or not enough. It’s unhealthy! Create those boundaries. If you’re thinking of starting a YouTube channel, make sure you’re starting for the right reasons and there’s a purpose behind it. It cannot be self-driven. What kind of value can you bring to people’s lives? As a creator, you have the responsibility of having influence over the lives of others. Create with intention and stay authentic to your purpose.
“When I learn better, I try to do better, and I also try to share it, because we have that responsibility as influencers. People are watching us.”

Another HUGE Announcement!!! Change is happening: The YouTube Power Hour Podcast 380Power up your mind, create from confidence, and dazzle on camera with my ALL NEW Capture Your Confidence course! Capture Your Confidence is the complete step-by-step system that will help you bulletproof your mind against the negativity, and unleash your inner it-factor so you can confidently uplevel the way you look and feel on camera.
Do you ever struggle with negative self-talk when it comes to creating video content?
“Is this going to work out?”
“Am I wasting my time?”
“Do people think I’m weird?”
I have something I’ve been working on for almost a year that can help with that! I work with A LOT of content creators, and I see so much of what goes on behind the scenes… and not just for YouTube! I’m talking about video content on instagram, tiktok, you name it. The mind games that come with this career are no joke! Your confidence as a creator, your confidence on camera, and your internal dialogue are all crucial to your success and growth.
I’m releasing a BRAND NEW course all about CONFIDENCE and strengthening that internal dialogue. Your confidence on camera is a direct reflection of what’s going on in your mind. These two are intrinsically linked! There is so much more that goes into being confident on camera beyond, “just talk like you’re talking to a friend!” and this course is going to be a deep dive into that.
The Capture Your Confidence course is all new and is focused entirely on effective strategies that actually work in strengthening confidence. I’ve worked with hundreds of YouTubers since 2016, and I spend basically all day every day talking to YouTube creators, and sure, we talk about thumbnails and titles, but I’ve found that so much of our conversations center around the internal struggles that every single creator faces. Capture Your Confidence is a course designed for any kind of video creator, whether it’s on YouTube, TikTok, or Instagram, to provide creators with tools and strategies to become more confident on camera.
A lot of people feel like they’re doing everything right, but something is missing, and usually the thing that’s missing is that spark; that charisma, that magnetic, engaging IT factor that makes someone watchable and keeps viewers coming back from more, and it’s this kind of confidence that will make you successful as a creator.
When you make what’s going on in your mind and how it translates to confidence a priority, it’s going to be a game changer. This course will strengthen your mind so that you dazzle on camera.
My mission is to support female creators in their endeavors to grow on YouTube, because I truly believe having a Youtube audience can dramatically impact your life in so many ways. Because of this, I am always thinking of ways I can help women achieve this goal. I have this podcast, my Zero to Influence YouTube Bootcamp, I offer 1:1 coaching, and I just came out with my $39 Audience Attraction System Mini Course, but I knew there was something else I wanted to do, and that’s where Capture Your Confidence comes in. In this brand new course, I focus on being in front of the camera and bulletproofing your mind against any outside influences, so you can release that inner it-factor that will grow your influence on whichever platform you’re on. It’s so easy to succumb to negative influences, whether that’s from your audience, from performance, or even from people in your personal lives who seem to doubt your ability to succeed. This course will help you protect your mind from these influences.
Included in the course is everything you’ll need to improve your confidence on camera. Think of it as a crash course into everything it will take to become the best version of you. Confidence is learned. Confidence is something that EVERYONE can achieve. I’ve put a lot of time and effort into this course and I’m so excited to finally bring it to the world!

How to Make Money on YouTube with a Small Audience (less than 10k subs!): The YouTube Power Hour Podcast 376

Tabs is a wife, a mom to two girls, works part time in a hospital pharmacy, and loves to sell used clothing. She shares her journey and everything about her business through her Youtube channel
One of the questions I get asked a lot is, “Erika, how can I make money with a small channel?” and I think Tabs is a great example of how it can work. Tabs has such an interesting niche and one I’ve never had on the show before. She’s a used clothing seller and shares it all on YouTube! She got into it a couple years ago and it’s just continued to snowball, due in part to jumping into my Zero to Influence YouTube Bootcamp and my 1:1 YouTube Coaching (you know how much I love sharing my students on the show!). Most of all, she has only 7.6k subscribers. Her goal for her and her daughters is to live a lifestyle of freedom: to work when they want and travel often. She wants to transition her channel into a travel, thrifting, and reselling channel where she can highlight areas of Canada and the US and to be able to earn a full-time income doing it, and despite having a small channel, she’s been able to leverage her small but loyal audience, make money from YouTube, and inch closer and closer toward this goal.
“You’re not trying to please YouTube, you’re trying to please your viewer.”
Enrolling in the BootcampAfter spending some time on her channel, Tabs felt like she was in a rut. She was creating content, but it felt like it was all the same stuff over and over again. She was really struggling with thumbnails. She wasn’t growing like she wanted to. She felt like there was some secret to YouTube that she wasn’t in on. She was putting so much time into her channel and racking her brain trying to figure out what YouTube wanted from her. She had no idea what kind of content she should be making and for whom. She needed structure and guidance.
She found my podcast and decided to join my bootcamp and the pieces started to fall together. She learned how to talk to the camera, how to do intros and outros, how to create a schedule and plan her content a month or two out. By joining the bootcamp, not only did she have access to course materials that helped her focus her channel, but she became a part of an exclusive community of female YouTubers she could bounce ideas off of and get support from. Most of all, she had access to a library of years worth of group coaching call recordings with me!
“The more small improvements you make, the faster your trajectory goes.”
Tabs’ Biggest BreakthroughsThe first change she noticed was her audience retention, and once she saw that improve, she was hungry for more. She knew there were other areas of her channel she could improve on. She had always struggled with thumbnails, and she learned how to come to terms with herself to do things that were outside of her comfort zone and what she thought her aesthetic should be. She was so focused on what she wanted her thumbnails to look like and not what viewers would want to click on. By making thsee changes, she tripled her AdSense revenue in 3 months!
After her time in the bootcamp, Tabs was inspired by some of my other 1:1 coaching client interviews on the podcast and really felt that it would be a good fit. She had made so much wonderful progress in the bootcamp, but she felt like she needed someone to tell her what to do and lay out her path even more. Often, we know we have to make changes, but we don’t know where to make them or how.
Her biggest breakthrough was being able to see possibility: the hardest part is making the initial changes, and once you see them, you see the possibility and it fires you up and motivates you to continue to put those new tools and changes into practice as you continue to grow.
Final ThoughtsWhen it comes to YouTube, you have to be passionate about it because you’re going to be doing it awhile before you start getting paid for it. You’re not trying to please YouTube, you’re trying to please your viewer.
Goals are attainable when you break things down. You can set a goal to make $1,000 a month. Then it becomes $2,000 a month, and before you know it, your goal is $10,000 a month. Dive into your analytics: how many views does it take to reach x amount of money? How many views are you striving for? What type of content should you be creating? How long should your videos be?
Stop spinning your wheels like Tabs did! Commit to something and make an investment in your channel. If you’re serious about your channel and you love doing YouTube, and even if you’re not sure what to do, join the bootcamp!
Finally, be consistent for your audience. Answer every single question! Build a loyal community around your channel. Tabs’ community is like a family to her because she interacts with them so much.
YouTube has changed Tabs’ life for the better. It’s opened up an entirely different dream for her life, and it can do that for you too!
“I get to do what I love and make money doing it.”

Desiree Martinez is a YouTuber, Podcaster, author, award-winning social media creative content creator, and advocate for Women Creators. She has worked with hundreds of businesses and brands to help them grow their business with better content marketing. Desiree knows what it takes to help your business grow, build a community, and get leads through a very noisy news feed. As the founder of Women of Video, she is helping to build economic impact and equality for the female creator economy with community, education & resources. She’s a hot mess mom of two, Mario Kart champ, Slytherin, and nerdy wife living in Michigan.
I’m so excited to welcome Desiree back on the show! I love having fellow female entrepreneurs on the show who have a similar mission as I do, which is growing their online presence through video to help them make money and improve their lives. I love Desiree’s work and I admire her so much! Check out my last episode with Desiree here!
Balancing Motherhood as a Content CreatorThis industry is a wonderful place for moms, but it is a challenge. How can you juggle being an entrepreneur and creator and a mom? Well, first you need to remove the idea of balance. You’re never going to be able to spend equal amounts of time on your business, your spouse, your kids, your home, etc… it just doesn’t work that way! But what you can find is harmony. Think of it in terms of music: sometimes in music, some instruments have more time than others, or are louder than others, but they all work together to create something beautiful. Establish healthy boundaries, temper your expectations, and know what your strengths and weaknesses are. Be strict with the hours you have. Get creative and find out what works with you.
“You have to spend money to make money.”
Investing in YourselfWhen you have kids, it almost forces you to make tough decisions. In the beginning of your business, you’re everything: you’re the sales team, the accountant, and the worker bee. But you know what? You need to spend money to make money, and the fastest way to grow is by investing in yourself, and sometimes that investment looks like outsourcing tasks for your business or childcare. Even though she went to school for graphic design and editing, it was a bottleneck in her business. She knew how to do it, she knew what she wanted it to look like, but she had absolutely no time to do it. Creating the content is the easiest and the most fun part, but she needed someone to do the heavy lifting of editing it. It made sense to outsource and pay for an editor because that was what was stopping her train from going. Not having the right help can be the difference from moving forward or quitting altogether.
When Desiree finally outsourced aspects of her business and parted with money, she was finally able to regain both time and sanity. Even if you’re not a creator, you need a break from your kids and your obligations to them at some point. Desiree was also in a fortunate enough position to hire an Au Pair, but believes strongly in the importance of “it takes a village” when it comes to raising a family.
How do you know if you’re ready to outsource? Find the bottleneck. What’s slowing you down or stopping you entirely from doing something consistently that can have long-term gain? Whether it’s hiring a video editor, or someone to manage your email inbox, getting a gym membership, or finding childcare, figure out what’s holding you back and understand that you have to spend some money in order to be able to make it.
You CAN’T do it all!The biggest lie women tell themselves is that they can do it all. We as a society have decided that women have to do it all, whether we are moms or not, whether we are in a marriage or relationship or not. Yes, you may have the same hours in a day as Beyonce, but Beyonce pays for help and pays for the time of other people to help her. We don’t have to do everything ourselves. Stop thinking you have to do everything. You don’t!
Women of Video Virtual ConferenceDid you know that statistically, even though female creators outnumber male creators, women creators make 59 cents to every dollar a male creator makes. Less than 12% of the top trending videos on YouTube are created by women.
Desiree is hosting the Women of Video Virtual Conference on March 11 and 12! This virtual event really encapsulates Desiree’s mission to help female creators build economic impact and equality through education, resources, and community.
With this conference, Desiree wants to give attendees an infusion of opportunity to help with growth in 3 areas: niche, platform, and money. With 36 focused, specific sessions over two days with speakers including myself, Desiree’s goal for this event is to help women with their goals and objectives as creators, so that they can take control of their time and money in a way they may not have been able to before. The best part? The event is free! CLICK HERE to register!

From 9-5 to YouTube Full-Time: How Tamara’s Timeless Beauty Turned Her Side Hustle into a Life-Changing Career: The YouTube Power Hour Podcast 374
“I would not have been able to retire without YouTube.”
Ready for a fast & easy YouTube plan of action that really works? Get started TODAY with a customized, fool-proof YouTube action plan that will attract more viewers, more subscribers and more revenue with the YouTube Audience Attraction System!
As a woman in her 60s, Tamara Staska strives to grow older gracefully, gratefully and beautifully. She’s a retired nurse, and on her YouTube channel, Tamara’s Timeless Beauty, she shares her lifelong passion for skin care, beauty, heath and wellness and building a community of like minded women as they embrace this next chapter of their lives.
I love to bring my students on my show! I love Tamara so much and I’m excited for my listeners and viewers to fall in love with her.
Like many people, Tamara was an avid YouTube consumer before she became a creator. She didn’t have anyone in her personal life to talk to about skincare and makeup, so long before she even started her channel, YouTube was her happy place where she could find a community of people with similar interests and passions as she had. Even now, as a successful creator, it’s the community aspect of YouTube that she loves the most.
Se thought about doing YouTube for a while, but it wasn’t until 3 years ago that she uploaded her first video. As she approached her 60s and a new decade, she said to herself, “it’s now or never,” so she set up her camera and the rest is history. When she started, she had no idea of the potential of YouTube. She thought it would be a fun thing to do, and that it would be a fun hobby to fill her time and supplement her income when she retired.
“The more you learn, the more you realize what you don’t know.”
Joining the BootcampAbout a year into her channel, Tamara has amassed 11,000 subscribers, which was a pretty amazing feat, considering that she was learning as she went, and for the first 6 months of her channel, she didn’t even know how to make thumbnails! But she really felt like the blind was leading the blind. She had no strategy. She was throwing stuff at the wall to see aht would stick, and to her credit, it did bring her a fair amount of success. In fact, her third video went viral! Great, right? It is great if you’re ready for it, but Tamara wasn’t. She didn’t have the content to back it up. She needed to learn how to plan her content and analyze her existing content to really understand what works and what doesn’t. She found my Zero to Influence YouTube Bootcamp through other channels and decided to join.
As it turns out, she joined the Bootcamp at the exact right time. She had some content in place that she could analyze, but she was ready for the next level of information, strategy, and planning; to understand the root cause of why some videos were popular while others weren’t. Her experience in the bootcamp was transformative; it was inspirational, motivational, and educational, and it was just what the doctor ordered. She found herself more excited than ever about her channel and right away, she noticed that her videos were performing better.
1:1 YouTube CoachingAfter her 6 months in the Zero to Influence YouTube Bootcamp came to an end and seeing just how much it had done for her and how much growth her channel had seen, she wasn’t ready to let go of me yet. She was hungry for more and felt like she needed more personalized attention and coaching, so she signed on with me as a 1:1 YouTube Coaching client.
“I really did not understand the potential of YouTube in terms of subscribers, views, and income.”
Tamara’s YouTube BreakthroughsTamara’s learning process has been an evolutionary one… she’s taken things step by step, day by day, and week by week. What she was learning energized and inspired her. It was the first time she’d understood the importance of thumbnails and honing in on her True Fan. By diving deeply into the nitty gritty details of her True Fan, she was able to come up with content that got more views. She was able to really nail down a strategy where she planned out a month of content, and through coaching could get feedback on each video. She learned how to increase her view time and how looking at analytics could help with her strategy.
Tamara’s had 4 videos get over 100k views. She’s much better with anxiety now, and she tries not to get too bent out of shape when a video doesn’t perform as well. There’s a balance between feeling excitement when a video does really really well but also not being overly attached to the outcome of a video so that when one doesn’t perform well, it upsets and discourages you. But most of all, Tamara’s YouTube channel has enabled her to retire early, which was something she never could have dreamed was within her reach 3 years ago.
Final thoughtsTamara’s advice to anyone just starting out on YouTube is that commitment, consistency, and willingness to be constantly learning and exploring is key to growth. Don’t allow yourself to get too discouraged. Stick with it and keep going!
Tamara would not have been able to retire without YouTube and it’s completely changed her life. She gets so much joy and fun out of it. Sure, it has its stressors and anxieties that come with it, but it’s such a great community and Tamara has so much fun. She plans to keeping doing YouTube as long as possible because of just how sustainable it is for her and what a healthy balance it has given her in her retirement life.
On the fence about taking the next step for your channel? Really want to understand YouTube for women and for yourself in a great community with step-by-step guidance? The Zero to Influence YouTube Bootcamp will help you understand and grow your channel!

How one Small Change Grew Nikol Johnson’s YouTube Channel: The YouTube Power Hour Podcast 371
“When I became authentic is when I gained my audience.”
Ready for a fast & easy YouTube plan of action that really works? Get started TODAY with a customized, fool-proof YouTube action plan that will attract more viewers, more subscribers and more revenue with the YouTube Audience Attraction System!
Nikol Johnson rocked the beauty world when she decided to liberate her gray hair at thirty-nine. As a niche social influencer Nikol has over 13 million views on her beauty YouTube channel and reaches tens of thousands of women across her social media platforms looking for a change in the anti-aging beauty industry. Nikol has completed collaborations with IPSY, Pantene, M.M. LaFleur, Elemis, La Mer, and HSN to name a few.
Around 2009, long before social media was what it is now and when YouTube in particular was in its infancy, Nikol took an American Express-sponsored business course which inspired her to start a channel. She launched her channel in January of 2010 as a way to share her knowledge and expertise in makeup and skincare. For the first few years of her channel, she was doing makeup tutorials, making videos about procedures she was doing on clients, following trends, and doing what everyone else was doing, but it felt almost an abyss to her. Was anyone even watching?
Nikol’s IVF journeyIn 2014-2015, she went through an IVF journey that was physically and mentally taxing. At the time, IVF was still a pretty taboo topic. She also started going gray in her 30s, which only compounded her feelings of being an outsider. Nobody was really creating content about what the IVF process was like, nor was anyone creating content for women with gray hair. But when she “came out” so-to-speak to her audience, both about her IVF and her hair, her channel changed. Her authenticity attracted viewers to her channel..
Going grayIt’s important to remember that when it comes to beauty, there really are no rules. If you want to dye your hair until you’re 100, go for it! For Nikol, it just wasn’t attainable for her, so she decided to embrace her gray hair. She felt like it had a story to tell. A lot of women who go gray have all different patterns of how it grows gray. It was as if the old Nikol was leaving and the new Nikol was emerging, and she had to accept that new version of herself. She was so tired of fighting, so she just decided to embrace it. It was that declaration that she was going to embrace her gray hair that changed her channel.
“It was like the old me was leaving, and I had the new me, and I had to accept it.”
Blowing up on YouTubeIn March of 2019, Nikol started the #FierceAging series, which took real women of all age brackets and showcased their real, relatable issues, whether that was bags, pigmentation, eyebrows, etc. The series was well-received and her channel exploded. Now, Nikol’s mission is to inspire women, to support women, to get women back into makeup who have maybe left themselves or feel like they’re out of the game because they are older.
Dealing with Negative CommentsNikol just accepts the negative comments and understands that that person is just not part of their tribe. She sometimes acknowledges them with a reply, and finds a lot of people delete their comments once they’re called out. Her advice on dealing with the haters? Be grounded in yourself and protect your energy. If you allow yourself to constantly read negativity from people who don’t know you, just ask yourself, “is this person paying my mortgage?” No, they aren’t! So pay them no mind, and focus on what’s important to you. Channel that negative energy into something that works for you. Nikol likes to work out. Rather than taking in the negative energy in, she lets it out through exercise. Always remember that just because someone says something about you doesn’t make it true or relevant.
Nikol also is a big proponent of self-care, and while that phrase might be overused, she considers self-care as taking the time to nurture yourself. You cannot run on empty. You have nothing to give if your tank is empty. It’s easy to lose yourself in this career, so focus on yourself and know what you need so that you can give to others.
Final thoughtsNikol’s biggest YouTube struggle is finding new content ideas. It’s hard when you’re creating content in a niche market to not repeat the same things. Nikol is always researching and taking real-life experiences and turning them into videos. You don’t always need to follow a strict script or regimen when it comes to creation. Sometimes the best ideas and inspiration come from real life situations.
Nikol has a burning desire to make a difference. The three words she says a lot on her channel are bold, fierce, and unapologetic. Everyone comes with their unique journeys and special gifts and we are all learning from each other, so don’t give up. Giving up is the easiest thing to do. If you’re passionate about it, and it’s your desire, and you have something you can give the world (everyone does!), you just have to keep showing up. Keep showing what you have to offer. It takes work, but you want it, you’ll get it if you have that passion and that burning desire.
“You cannot run on empty. You have nothing to give if your tank is empty.”

How New York Times Best Selling Author Grows her Brand with YouTube! with Jennifer Scott: The YouTube Power Hour Podcast 368
**“You can create whatever you want on YouTube, and I love that.”**
Be sure to check out my Free 2022 YouTube Goals Workbook! Inside you’ll find you’ll find an exercise that I do with my clients and in my Bootcamp that will help you stick with and achieve your goals on YouTube. The journaling and reflection exercises in the workbook have three different components that we’re going to focus on: money, lifestyle, and mindset, and will help align your life goals with your YouTube goals to help create the 2022 that YOU want.
Jennifer L. Scott is the New York Times bestselling author of Lessons from Madame Chic, At Home with Madame Chic and Polish Your Poise with Madame Chic (Simon & Schuster), Mademoiselle Chic (Daiwa Shobo), and Connoisseur Kids (Chronicle Books). She is also the creator of the blog and YouTube channel, The Daily Connoisseur, where she explores the fine art of living. Jennifer has been featured on CNN, BBC, and CBS News, and in The New York Times, Vanity Fair, USA Today, Newsweek, and The Daily Mail. She and her husband, Ben, have four children and they divide their time between Southern California and the English countryside.
Jennifer has been on YouTube for 11 years! She started her channel in 2011, not because she had plans to be a YouTube star, or even knew that was possible, but because she had written her first book and wanted to market it. Even back then, Jennifer recognized that YouTube was a powerful marketing tool. She already enjoyed watching Youtube as a consumer and had a blog at the time, and she figured, why not add a visual component?
For the first 6 years, Jennifer stayed in the, “I’m an author, not a Youtuber, my channel is only for marketing my books” mindset and didn’t even so much as look at her analytics, but she was always consistent and posted at least once a week, and has continued to do so for the rest of her time on YouTube.
“I spent six years not knowing what I had.”
Taking her channel seriouslyAround 2017, Jennifer realized that she wasn’t making anywhere near the amount of money she ought to be for the time and effort she put into her videos, and found herself at a crossroads: either go all in or quit. She decided to go all in, and began paying attention to her analytics, investing in editing, and improving the quality of her videos to improve her channel. She researched all the ways you can make money on YouTube and came to the conclusion that if she wanted to see returns, she needed to provide the best quality content she could. She needed people to watch her videos and feel excited about them, and the key to making money was to deliver high quality content.
Seeing growthJennifer sees herself as more of a tortoise rather than a hare. She’s seen steady growth for the last 5 years since her mindset shift when she started paying attention to her channel. While her content itself hasn’t changed much in 11 years, the way it’s presented and packaged has. Some popular videos have given her a subscriber bump here and there, but for the most part, her growth has been steady. Even when she has a video that doesn’t do as well as the others, she never considers any video a true flop because there’s always someone somewhere who will appreciate it.
Jennifer’s first book was the first self-published book to be reviewed by the New York Times. It sold over a million copies and she credits that to her channel. Despite it being published over 10 years ago, it’s still selling well, because she is always getting new subscribers to her channel who find her and buy it.
“I don’t want to waste people’s time. I want people to click on the video and have an amazing experience.”
Finding balanceJennifer is a mother of 4, and she uploads three videos a week! Two of her videos are on her main channel, and the other is for her paid subscribers, who she calls the Chic Society, all while continuing her career as an author. How does she do it all? Well, her #1 struggle is finding the time to fit in everything that she needs to do, but with the help of having a regimented schedule, a homeschool tutor, a nanny, and an editor, she makes it all work. She films on Fridays and Saturdays, and spends the rest of her week doing everything else that she needs to do for content creation. She very rarely takes a day off! While she did have a time where she felt very burned out, she kept going, and she’s glad she did. It’s the connection to her audience that really helps her keep going.
Final thoughtsJennifer is passionate about YouTube because it has given a voice and a platform to so many people who have been rejected by commercial enterprises. The beauty of YouTube is that it’s yours and you can create whatever you want! Though she wishes she had taken it seriously as a career and as an art way back 11 years ago when she started, she takes pride in helping women uncover parts about themselves that are hidden or that they would like to uncover, whether that’s expressing their style or even just helping them out of the drudgery of everyday life.
Her advice? Put up a shield to protect yourself from the mean or aggressive comments, because that is your best line of defense. There will always be people who don’t want to see you succeed, so protect yourself from that. If you’re in it for the long haul, choose to create content about something you truly love, not something that is trendy right now. Remember, a niche doesn’t always have to be specifically the kind of videos you make, it can be more about what a demographic of people like, and Jennifer’s channel is a perfect example of this. Instead of creating all fashion videos or all etiquette videos, Jennifer creates a variety of videos for a very specific demographic of person to appeal to that specific person’s interest.
*“What do you absolutely love? Make content around that.”*

***********The Real Deal on Influencer Brand Deals with Chris Ledford (husband of YouTuber Serein Wu)***********: The YouTube Power Hour Podcast 320
******“Know your worth. It’s ok to walk away. It’s ok to say no.”******
Be sure to check out my FREE eBook: How to Create Impactful Content During COVID-19 Pandemic! This 32 page guide will walk you through how to create content during a global crisis PLUS it includes over 75 YouTube video ideas that you can use TODAY to grow your channel!
With over 2 decades of experience in talent representation, Chris is a true industry veteran. Chris began his career as an agent intern at a well known talent agency in Beverly Hills. From there he went on to become an agent in the commercials department then in the TV and Film department followed by a promotion to department head before finally becoming a partner at the firm. Realizing the future of entertainment would be in social media Chris decided to focus his attention on clients that produced their own content. Today, Chris represents a handful of diverse creators that he helps grow their social reach while driving advertising revenue to their platforms.
You may know Chris Ledford’s wife, YouTuber Serein Wu. As her YouTube channel grew and she started getting brand deals, Chris started looking over her contracts. At the time, social media was still relatively new and he noticed that the deals she was being offered weren’t very well thought-out, So he started representing her and a couple other clients, and as his client list grew, he started noticing patterns across the industry that really needed to be addressed. Chris’s current list of clients he represents feature athletes and MMA competitors to food bloggers to people in the beauty space. Really, his only criteria for clients is that they have an online presence, even if that’s just an instagram account!
Every brand is different and every client is different. Some brands, for example, prefer really artistic content and some only care about reach and numbers. For Chris, as a rep, his main job is to figure out what the brand is interested in… and sometimes, the brands don’t even know!
**“The negotiation process is a dance.”****
Are affiliate links the way to go? Not always! Sometimes affiliate links aren’t necessarily a good metric to determine the success of a campaign. If the company provides you with a link to Amazon, for example, but a viewer sees your youtube video but buys it at Sephora, and then recommends it to a friend who buys it from Ulta, the brand can’t possibly know where that sale came from, especially when a product is being sold in multiple places. When multiple influencers have affiliate links for the same brand, a viewer might watch a video from one creator, then watch a similar video with the same brand featured by a different creator, they might use their link instead.
How should you negotiate with brands? Chris’s best advice: start high. Outprice yourself and see how it goes. If you know that your rate is higher than someone is going to pay, start there so you and the brand can meet in the middle if they start low. Often, creators get so worried about losing the deal that they underprice themselves, and in the long run, this will hurt the industry as a whole.
At what point should you start working with brands? As a content creator, you should start working with brands when you feel like you have something to contribute, and it’s not always about numbers. Even if you only have a couple thousand followers, but you create really interesting content, that’s something that a brand has to pay for one way or the other. Whether they’re paying a freelancer to do it or they’re paying you to do it, the advertising has to be created and paid for somehow.
How do you know how much to charge? This is a super common question, and it’s important to know that it’s not about how many followers you have, it’s who is following you. For example, someone with 10k subscribers, the majority of whom are 12-17 may not be as lucrative as someone with 2k subscribers in the 25-30 age bracket, who are more likely to have the disposable income to buy a product. Remember: anything extra (monetization turned off, exclusivity, view guarantees, etc.) costs extra, so charge for it!
When do brands start being interested in influencers? Typically, brands start being interested in a creator when they have around 10k followers, which is not to say that it doesn’t happen to people with less than 10k, because it does.
Final thoughts When negotiating with brands, stand your ground. Be pleasant, nobody wants to work with a jerk, but know your worth. It’s ok to say no, because when you tell someone no, they might want it even more, and just because you say no now doesn’t mean it can’t be a yes in the future. Don’t be afraid to think outside the box and get creative with what you can offer to a brand!

*“My advice to micro influencers or creators who are young in their process, be relentless in pursuing what you want to do, because the only way for you to do this full time is to create content. That’s what you do.”*

************Kiva Brent On Why She Ditched Biochemistry For A Career On YouTube**************: The YouTube Power Hour Podcast 319
******“If I hadn’t enrolled in the bootcamp, I would have stopped. I would have gone to med school. I just didn’t have the confidence.”******
Be sure to check out my FREE eBook: How to Create Impactful Content During COVID-19 Pandemic! This 32 page guide will walk you through how to create content during a global crisis PLUS it includes over 75 YouTube video ideas that you can use TODAY to grow your channel!
Kiva Brent is an Interior Stylist and Youtube personality based in Pittsburgh, PA. Her design journey began when she moved into her first home. She wanted to craft a beautiful, luxurious, modern space without breaking the bank and struggled to find guidance. That’s when Kiva began her Youtube channel, DIY with KB. On Youtube, Kiva teaches people how to achieve the “luxe look for less.” Much of her content shows you how to combine luxury and affordable items in the same space. She also shares DIY home decor projects. Kiva and her Youtube channel have been featured on The Tamron Hall Show, Insider, and The Zoe Report.
Kiva started her current channel at the beginning of the pandemic. At the time, she was still in school, stuck at home, and bored out of her mind. She was tired of staring at 4 boring walls, so she started designing and filming it. Kiva’s degree is in biochemistry, and at the start of her channel, she was planning on going to med school and studying for the MCAT. The first time she had a video go viral was coincidentally on the day she was interviewing for a job that she didn’t actually want.
So why the huge shift from biochemistry and dreams of med school to interior design? Kiva was raised by her grandmother, who was an artist. Despite growing up poor, their home was beautiful, and because of her grandmother’s creativity and artistry, the home felt rich, so Kiva developed an interest and desire to work in interior design, but she was too cautious to pursue it because she was afraid that it wasn’t a stable career path. She saw an opening in the niche on YouTube and decided to go for it. If YouTube wasn’t going to work out, she was going to go to med school. Kiva held out on the decision for a long time. She wanted to be confident in the longevity of a lucrative career on YouTube in order to abandon the plan she’d had for the last 20 years of her life. At first, she felt guilty abandoning her dreams of med school, but now she’s happy with the decision.
*“If anyone was going to help me, it was Erika.”***
When Kiva had about 25k subscribers, she joined my Zero to Influence YouTube Bootcamp. Her channel was growing nicely, and since everyone was stuck at home, she was posting around 3x a week. But she still didn’t really have a clear direction for her channel. She wanted to pivot, but she wasn’t sure how. She was excited about her channel, but cautious at the same time. How do you know if YouTube could be a long term career? She realized that if anyone could help her understand how to create a viable career on YouTube, it was me, and there was an opening in the bootcamp at just the right time.
The biggest game changer for Kiva was confidence, because when she joined, she didn’t have it. YouTube can be an overwhelming platform and there’s so much more to learn than just editing and uploading. Before joining, she had no plan and was nervous with every single upload. Through the lessons in the bootcamp, she learned how to create a good thumbnail and title, and truly brand herself in a way that established consistency and credibility on her channel. Kiva has worked hard to overcome her perfectionism and understand that when you create content with confidence, people will come, and she’s learned to relax and not take things so personally so she can truly enjoy what she loves. In fact, one of her most popular videos was one that she didn’t even want to upload because the editing and the audio weren’t up to her standards. It has nearly 650k views now, which goes to show you that just because something isn’t perfect, people will still watch it and get value from it! My 1:1 coaching has helped her with her confidence, and refine her content to make it more widely available as possible. YouTube can be a lot of trial and error, and creating content is so much work. Sometimes having a coach to give you guidance, analyze your analytics, and let you bounce ideas off them can make a world of difference.
What I love about Kiva is that her content is relatable. It’s a hard world. Not everyone has the money to spend on making their home beautiful, so Kiva’s mission is to make sure that everyone has a beautiful home, regardless of budget. Interior design doesn’t have to be inaccessible, and Kiva is so aligned with her mission!
**“It’s about making my content as widely available as possible.”****
3 Key Interview Takeaways: 1. Treat your YouTube channel like a business from the beginning. Do it the right way from Day 1! Take the time to learn the tricks and learn the platform. Learn it all: titles, descriptions, thumbnails, editing, sound effects, engagement, retention etc.! It might seem overwhelming at first, but it isn’t. 2. Block off time for your comment section. Instagram is visually beautiful, but it doesn’t really allow for as much connection to an audience. YouTube is all about community, so make time to foster that community. Talking to strangers on the internet might seem weird or awkward at first but make a concerted effort to respond to your comments. Frederique answers them no matter what, whether she’s tired, sick, hungover… doesn’t matter! 3. Never give up. Frederique had an all or nothing mentality when it came to YouTube because she didn’t really have a choice. With her business crumbling, she had to give it her all on YouTube, and that’s not an easy thing to do. There are days where you might want to throw in the towel. Don’t! Keep going.

***********How Frederique Bros went from Business Failing in 2020 to Full Time YouTube Creator***********: The YouTube Power Hour Podcast 318
******“There is always room for someone on YouTube. There is always an audience for someone.”******
Be sure to check out my FREE eBook: How to Create Impactful Content During COVID-19 Pandemic! This 32 page guide will walk you through how to create content during a global crisis PLUS it includes over 75 YouTube video ideas that you can use TODAY to grow your channel!
Born in France, Frederique Bros lived in Paris for 10 years where she learnt how to dress up effortlessly chic for each occasion. Last year, she created her YouTube channel to help women with fashion, beauty and lifestyle tips with a French twist. Her worldwide community is growing fast with nearly 200,000 followers and still counting. Frederique loves sharing her styling skills and fashion flair with elegance and humor.
Frederique Bros comes from a digital marketing background, and owned a web design agency (which completely crashed during Covid). She had a YouTube channel that she had made a few videos on, mostly about web design, and nobody really watched them. Most of the videos were answers to common questions she got from her web design clients, but she really had no strategy and had no idea what she was doing, so she decided to rebrand. She relied on being French, having lived in Paris for 10 years, and being over 40 with a passion for fashion. So… she decided to give it a try. People were either going to love her or hate her, and there just might have been a market for her. Her first video in February 202 was admittedly very bad, but she had fun making it. At the time, her business was really struggling and YouTube was either going to make it or break it for her. She started with 18 subscribers (mostly her friends), and set a goal for herself for 5,000 subscribers in 6 months.
*“The algorithm is unpredictable. You can try to control as much as you can, but at the end of the day, it’s a robot who decides to show your content to someone else.”*
At first, Frederique was trying to be perfect, or at least, appear perfect, but she soon realized that she didn’t need to be perfect, she just had to be herself. Once she stopped over editing her videos and removing the goofy “oopsies” moments and allowed her true self to shine, she started to get more subscribers. For Frederique, YouTube is like you’re stripping naked… you can’t hide anything. Even though you’re alone and talking to a lens, Frederique just pretends that she’s talking to some of her best friends. It took her a few months to get to 1000 subscribers. She got monetized and invested anything she earned back into her channel through equipment, software, music, courses, you name it. She even listened to this podcast while walking her dog!
Frederique got a viral hit just a few months into her channel called French Women Don’t Get Fat. She didn’t really think people would watch it because it had such a strong opinion, but after awhile, it started to pick up. Every time Frederique checked her analytics, she was freaking out. She started to rack up hundreds of comments. While the video didn’t really target her ideal audience, it did give her a lot of exposure on YouTube. The video now has 1.4 million views, and she’s earned about $9000 from it, even though it’s not even one of her best videos. Going viral really gave Frederique a reinvigorated sense of motivation to continue to buckle down and go all in on her channel. She really makes a concerted effort to connect and communicate with her audience. She is always on YouTube, studying her analytics or watching other people’s videos, and while her background in digital marketing has served her well, she really had to invest a lot of time and energy to learn the platform and really know it by heart. Her advice to YouTubers? Never give up!
*“To any people who are listening: never, never, never give up. Never give up and do it properly! Learn the tricks because there are a lot of things to learn with YouTube.”***

***********How *did 63-Year-Old YouTube Newbie Kimberly of Pretty Over Fifty Explode her Following in a Crowded, Saturated Niche?**************: The YouTube Power Hour Podcast 317
*******“I understood the power of keywords. I understood the power of being focused and niched down.”*********
Be sure to check out my FREE eBook: How to Create Impactful Content During COVID-19 Pandemic! This 32 page guide will walk you through how to create content during a global crisis PLUS it includes over 75 YouTube video ideas that you can use TODAY to grow your channel!
You’re never too old to get on YouTube! Kimberly of Pretty Over 50 started her channel at the age of 62. After a lifetime of not taking care of her skin, it was in pretty bad shape, so she decided to start a YouTube channel to chronicle whether or not she could “fix” her skin. What started as a fun, engaging, creative outlet for her turned into something beyond her wildest dreams!
Kimberly had a full career that spanned over 35 years before she started her YouTube channel. Since she had been a business owner for so long, she really understood that it was on her to build the framework and create meaningful content, and once she had a vision, she saw the business aspect of YouTube starting to form. She was able to see what she needed to put together to give herself the best shot possible. Her experience in graphic design and illustration helped the design aspect of her channel (and thumbnails) come very easily to her, but the camera? That’s another story. She’s had the same camera since she started, and she knows how to turn it on and off and that’s about it! She’s learned how to edit as she’s gone, and she’s gone from a tiny studio apartment where she used a card table and a sheet behind her on the wall to a newer, much more spacious recording space!
“That algorithm can really make or break your channel.”
One other thing that helped her even as a YouTube newbie was that she immediately understood the importance of keywords and niching down. Kimberly wanted to target the over 50 market, so she knew to include that in her keywords and titles. Since Kimberly was a beauty consumer before she was a creator, she was especially inspired by Angie from Hot and Flashy (who we have also had on the show!). One of the things I teach in my Zero to Influence YouTube Bootcamp is the importance of knowing your audience and Kimberly instantly knew exactly who she was creating content for: over 50 women. Kimberly has had one video go viral about a year into her channel. It took about 45-60 days after she posted it, but once YouTube picked up the video, it took off. She got 30-40k new subscribers in a month, because the algorithm helped women in the 50+ community find her. The video now has 1.6 million views and earned her $15k! Kimberly has experimented with how many videos she uploads a week, but she’s found a sweet spot at two. Interestingly enough, uploading more times a week has not given her more adsense revenue!
What’s unique about Kimberly’s channel and what sets her apart is that viewers can come to her channel and see a slow, steady progression with healthier looking skin. When she started her channel, her skin was admittedly in horrible condition, and viewers can really see improvement in her skincare journey! She specializes in videos about at-home, affordable anti-aging skincare that are accessible to anyone!
*“I’ve learned along with my audience the whole time, because I knew nothing about skincare in the beginning and my skin looked like it. I’ve learned so much over the course of time.”*
3 Key Interview Takeaways: 1. You’re never too old for YouTube. Kimberly had a long career before posting a single video. She was in her 60s when she started her channel! YouTube is for everyone, and you should never let anything discourage you from getting started if being a YouTuber is something you really want to do! 2. Know your audience. Kimberly’s quick success can be attributed to her business savvy instincts, and one of them is knowing exactly who she was creating content for. By knowing she wanted to target over 50 women on YouTube, she was able to incorporate that into all of her keywords and titles and once the YouTube algorithm picked up a video, thousands of members of her ideal audience were able to find her channel. 3. Find something that sets you apart. The beauty niche is fairly saturated, and even though it’s less saturated for creators specifically creating for 50+ women, it’s still important to find something that makes you unique from other creators. For Kimberly, it’s that she started with bad skin, learned with her audience, and her viewers can see how progressive her skincare routines have been! Being able to see a steady progression builds trust in her subscribers.

***********Beauty YouTuber Abbey Yung Shares the Burnout and Struggle with “Making It” on YouTube.***********: The YouTube Power Hour Podcast 316
******“Be open to trying new things, because you never know what people are going to enjoy the most from you.”********
Be sure to check out my FREE eBook: How to Create Impactful Content During COVID-19 Pandemic! This 32 page guide will walk you through how to create content during a global crisis PLUS it includes over 75 YouTube video ideas that you can use TODAY to grow your channel!
And… we’re back! Welcome to the new season of the YouTube Power Hour. We’re kicking it off with Abbey Yung!
Abbey Yung is a beauty content creator on YouTube, TikTok + Instagram. No beauty topic is off limits on her platforms… she loves sharing haircare, skincare, makeup + bodycare secrets and reviews. Abbey has always had a passion for both beauty and YouTube, and finally decided to take her shot at becoming a YouTuber in 2020. She built her channel while working a full time corporate job in the business world, and was able to leave that job to become a full time creator in the spring of 2021.
Abbey filmed her first YouTube video at the age of 18 in her college dorm room: an eyeshadow tutorial. At that point, Abbey was really self-conscious and worried a lot about what other people thought about her. WHen she heard that people were finding her videos, she was so mortified that she actually quit YouTube! She went back and tried again during her senior year, but once again, her insecurities got the best of her and she quit. After college, Abbey started working at a corporate job, but she was feeling unfulfilled. YouTube was still calling to her, so she decided to give it one more try. After all… third time’s a charm, right? This time, she decided she didn’t care about what people thought about her and so she tried all the things: YouTube, podcasting, blogging, you name it! Abbey had her personal training certification and the majority of her content centered around health and fitness, but she still wasn’t getting the results she wanted. By 2020, she jumped headfirst into YouTube and channeled all of her energy into the platform. After jumping around and experimenting with her content, she decided to put the health and fitness content aside and settle into the beauty sphere, where she was getting the most views
“I’ve alway kind of been an all in or nothing type of person, and when I started to see a little bit of momentum on my YouTube channel, it made me want to go all in on it.”
For a long time, Abbey was still working full time in her corporate job while growing her channel, and for a year and a half, it was truly non-stop. She would film on the weekends, get up early before work to work on her videos, bring her laptop to work and edit on her lunch break, and then continue to work on her channel when she got home from work. At one point, she was posting 3-5 videos a week while working a full-time corporate job! This kind of life was exhausting and not at all sustainable. She realized that most viewers don’t watch that many videos in a week anyway, so she dropped back down to 3 videos per week. She continued to experiment with her content, from skincare to hair, revamping her content consistently and trying new, inventive, fresh ways to deliver it. Abbey experienced a steady, consistent growth and to date, hasn’t really experienced a viral hit just yet. Right now, it’s her hair care videos that seem to be performing the best, but Abbey incorporates all aspects of beauty into her videos and she loves to research and educate herself on hair and skincare, which her viewers really seem to appreciate.
In April 2021, Abbey quit her corporate job completely to focus on being a full-time content creator. She was exhausted and burned out by trying to commit fully to both, and it got to the point where she was so passionate about YouTube that she felt that the hours she spent at work were wasted, and that she could get better results on her channel if she stepped away from her job entirely. It was stressful and scary for her to step away from a consistent, stable salary and into the unknown, but as luck would have it, she hit 100k subscribers the same day she gave her notice. Talk about fate! Abbey is now creeping up on 200k subscribers and has over double that on TikTok. She’s a go-getter and tends to go all in to whatever she’s doing, so she still struggles with not working around the clock, but she’s getting there! She credits her drive, determination, and self-motivation to getting her to where she is today.
“I realized as time went on, I was trying to put my energy into too many things, and YouTube was always what I was most passionate about.”
3 Key Interview Takeaways: 1. Don’t be afraid to experiment. Abbey played around with many different kinds of content, and continues to do so. You never know what might get the best response from viewers! 2. Go big or go home. YouTube is NOT for the faint of heart. Abbey’s commitment to her passion for YouTube is what contributed to her success. She put in the work, even when it got tough. It takes a lot of self-motivation and drive to do what it takes to “make it” on YouTube. 3. Don’t try to do it all. At the beginning of Abbey’s journey as a content creator, she was trying to do it all, but realized that it wasn’t necessary. She didn’t even like blogging, she never read other people’s blogs, so why bother with a blog? She now focuses solely on YouTube and TikTok. While YouTube takes up a lot more of her time, TikTok is, proportionally, more financially lucrative for her. She’s found that sweet spot of how to divide her time between the platforms that make the most sense for her, which I think is really, really smart.

She sold these keychains through Amazon, eBay, or Etsy and she made about $5,000! She started her second business around the age of 15 and it was more aligned with the company she has now. She offered to run social media for local coffee shops and businesses and would often pitch her instagram ideas to local bubble tea shops. But back then, she didn’t have any clients, and she didn’t make any money, and it was hard to navigate entrepreneurship at such a young age. At 17 she tried her hand at software and created a text messaging marketing software app, and it did well and she got a lot of creators to get on the app. Next came a food subscription box (talk about diversifying!) where you could eat like your favorite content creator. Think Hello Fresh, but make it influencer related. Finally, she launched X8 Media, a successful company that the now 20 year old Jade runs. You could call her previous brands “failures,” but she wouldn’t be where she is today without those experiences.
“Sometimes you start something and it doesn’t work, but it doesn’t mean in the next few years it’s not going to evolve into something else and something better.”
Her YouTube journey is interesting. Like her entrepreneurial journey, she started on YouTube when she was 9, and her content was making doll videos and skits and other things just for fun. Even from such a young age, Jade loved creating content. It wasn’t until she was a teenager that she realized that she could monetize her channel and utilize it to funnel potential clients into her business. Most people would jump at the opportunity to monetize their passion, right? But Jade’s take on this is interesting. She found that by monetizing her content creating passion, it didn’t feel the same. She doesn’t want YouTube to feel like a job to her and associate it with the pressure of making money. When she realized she could make money through YouTube, she went through a phase where that entrepreneurial brain of hers could only focus on that. And what happened? Her content suffered. She lacked authenticity. She stopped making what people liked and focused more on what she thought would be more SEO-driven to make money. She steered away from what she liked and never asked herself, “what do I want to make?” and many of her subscribers saw right through it and jumped ship. That was when Jade realized that 9-year-old Jade started YouTube to have fun, and 19 year old Jade should honor that. She stopped focusing on how much she could make off YouTube and is not actively pursuing a growth model for her channel. Jade’s purpose is to create great content and build a community, and any money she makes from it is a byproduct.
Jade has allowed her content to ebb and flow and admits that as a creator, sometimes you are bursting to the seams with creativity, while other times you have dry spells. Sometimes YouTube creators will oscillate between having a lot of views, and how they feel about their channel as a whole, and that’s ok! Jade believes there is a fine line between enjoying what you’re doing without it feeling like a job, and she prefers now to keep her YouTube channel separate from her business because she believes it allows her to create more freely. Jade has a team of people working for her and through her work with X8 Media, she is tackling the inequalities in creators. Only 16% of creators come from lower income households, and as a creator, you may be more able and willing to take a risk coming from a family with a higher socioeconomic status. A lot of low-income people are unable to become creators because of socioeconomic barriers, and Jade is working to change this.
“Focus on delivering that message, and the results will come over time”
3 Key Interview Takeaways: 1. Don’t give up. Just because something isn’t working right away doesn’t mean that it can’t work, or that somewhere along the line it will evolve into something better. Jade has tried multiple different business ventures, most of which never led anywhere, but she wouldn’t be where she is today without going through those failures. So… are they really failures after all? Remember: you have to start somewhere. 2. Have self-awareness. This is important on YouTube, because how are you supposed to be authentic without self-awareness of who you are? Know enough about yourself to know what your audience wants, but also what YOU want and what YOU want to create. 3. Cold email tips: Jade was not afraid to cold email, and sometimes that meant emailing 300 people to get one response. Be sneaky! Go crazy on LinkedIn and see what the person you’re reaching out to is liking and commenting on. Think, “how can you become a homie?” Jade really hates formal emails, so she tries to find something in common with the person she’s emailing and acts like a friend. But be genuine! If it’s fake, they can smell it.

**********How Lorry Hill’s Innovative Channel Exposed Celebrity Plastic Surgery**********: The YouTube Power Hour Podcast 303
*****“I realized that something I really wanted to do was help people, but I didn’t know how I could do that.”*****

Lorry Hill has been interested in what makes a person physically beautiful for as long as she can remember. She’s spent most of her life entrenched in the world of beauty and make-up, but above all, plastic surgery and cosmetic procedures. Her unique access to the world of plastic surgeons through a private network of friends and associates has given her wisdom and knowledge, and although she is not a medical doctor, she has an extremely well-informed opinion based on her own experiences and her talent for discerning what facial feature combinations are objectively beautiful. Her channel informs viewers of the best plastic surgery procedures that achieve the best results, as well as those that should be avoided. She has over 246,000 subscribers.
Lorry started her social media journey as a fashion influencer on Instagram, but she was doing a lot of work and spending a lot of money for very little money in return. She started a friendship with YouTuber Risa Does Makeup, and expressed interest in getting on YouTube. She wasn’t that good at makeup, but she did have one thing she was both passionate and knowledgeable about: plastic surgery. When she expressed that she wanted to start a channel about it, Risa warned that Lorry might bear the brunt of a lot of hate for it. Her channel began talking about basic surgeries and procedures, but Lorry never had any intention for it to become big, nor did she think it was possible. She wanted for it to be a fun hobby that she could possibly make a few bucks on.
****“The reason I was able to make this channel is because I have a long history of plastic surgery.”******
About a year into her channel, she was talking to one of her friends who was talking about Bella Hadid and how beautiful she was. When Lorry highlighted all the possible cosmetic procedures Bella has likely had done, her friend was in shock and disbelief. That’s when Lorry decided to make the video that would change the trajectory of her channel forever: her first celebrity analysis video. In the video, Lorry discussed all the possible surgeries that Bella Hadid had to achieve the look she has today. The video went viral, and within 3 months, Lorry had over 100K subscribers on YouTube, and people wanted more. The suggestions of other celebrities started pouring in and Lorry, wanting to take advantage of the overnight success, buckled down and churned out these requests. What started out as a fun hobby is now a full-time job.
So how long does it take for Lorry to create one of these videos? It takes her a whopping 20-40 hours for a single celebrity analysis video, and the most time-consuming part of the process is finding the media like before and after photos, which is easier said than done. The photos have to be authentic, without any retouching, with certain angles. She works really hard to find the best photos and it bothers her when people comment about lighting and angles. This process is so precise that it’s impossible for Lorry to outsource it since it’s so dependent on her expertise. She can usually put out about 3-4 videos per month.
How does Lorry know so much about plastic surgery? Lorry has been studying plastic surgery for 20+ years and has gotten really good at identifying procedures based on what she can see. In her early 20s, Lorry pursued acting in LA and was exposed to different kinds of plastic surgery, and met many people in the industry. She fell deep into the hobby of looking at and studying procedures, and she’s also had some work done herself.
What kind of feedback has she gotten from her viewers? It’s been pretty mixed. She has a core group of superfans who love whatever she puts out, but then there are others who love her until she does an analysis video on their favorite celebrity, and then they turn on her. She saw this happen a lot when she analyzed Selena Gomez and Hailey Bieber.
Response from celebrities and the medical community Lorry has had responses from celebrity makeup artists or those close to celebrities and most of them verified Lorry’s assumptions. She now has some informants and contacts who give her more inside information. Sometimes doctors reach out to her, usually for promotion. Lorry doesn’t always agree with plastic surgeons on social media. Some surgeons are creating similar content and analyses as Lorry, and often they credit her for the concept. But a lot of the time, she believes the surgeons aren’t agreeing with what she said, and it’s because they are busy people and unable to put in 20-40 hours of work on it like she is.
“The longest part of my video process is not the analysis, it’s the adding of media so that you guys can see it on your end.”
