When reading about some of the industrial giants of the last century, we notice that their lives eventually turned from acquisition to fair distribution of wealth. The Carnegies', Rockefellers', Hersheys', Morgans', and so many more found they could make a difference in the lives of many and the world.
Their realization came after lifetimes of hard work, business, and personal successes and failures. They lived and realized there is more to life than just receiving.
I know that most of you who read this are working hard, providing for families, and don't have millions of dollars to give away. But we have a gift just as valuable to share—our time when we are doing good and changing lives for the better.
In the last few days, with the help of many: many have been helped. They've been clothed, fed, shown love and respect, and left us just a little better than they arrived.
It takes teamwork, support, and patience, but we can transform a hurting world. Find your purpose and let God's Spirit of Love guide you. I promise if you'll open up to His message, we can make a difference for the better!

Prayer Relieves Anxiety
"Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God...."
Philippians 4:6
This week has caused a tremendous amount of stress for so many people. However, as we served people in our food pantry yesterday, you could almost see some of that stress dissipate as they realized food would not be something they would need to worry about for at least a week, if not longer.
A friend and I connected in the morning, and knowing some of the issues he's been dealing with, I asked if we could have a prayer together and watched some of the stress leave.
Another friend experienced a medical situation, then prayer, and got to the doctor very quickly for treatment and a plan to heal. As a result, her stress went away as she was able to sleep a large portion of the day.
All of these people and hundreds more have a deep faith journey and belief in a provider God Who cares for them. The gratitude they show carries a pay-it-forward momentum and transforms lives.
But sometimes, all of us need to back up, breathe, pray and thank God for what we have and place our needs in His hands and control. Then we can appreciate the results of our prayers because we've been released from carrying the burden alone.
It's time to give it up and feel the lightness of our spirits!

Jesus Has Everything We Need
"Come to Me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest......"
Matthew 11:28
Driving home yesterday was one of my more pleasant trips lately. The sun was just warm enough, the roads smooth enough, minimal construction, and only a few minor automobile accidents that were short delays. It was a good day to travel.
So I had a lot of time to think between the phone calls. I thought back to the original travelers and explorers who made the trip. It took days and much planning just to make a portion of the journey—no interstate highways, no traffic controls, and in some cases, no roads.
And no rest stops!
Traveling almost 900 miles, I didn't have to worry about fuel, bathrooms, or the necessary coffee stops. Instead, I could navigate the roads and enjoy the day, knowing that just a little way off was a place for me to take a break and rest for a moment.
In Matthew's gospel, Jesus invited us to come to Him, hear His message and trust that God's presence and protection will be over us.
Sometimes it might just be a quick refuel or coffee break; other times, it might be just closing our eyes and resting for a bit. And the offer of His love and care is as welcoming and providing as a huge Buc-ees rest area in the middle of nowhere.
Jesus has everything we need!

Praying For Our Police Officers
"You have loved righteousness and hated wickedness; therefore God, your God, has set you above your companions by anointing you with the oil of joy....."
Hebrews 1:9
The last 48 hours have been tragic and difficult for police officers nationwide. We've seen well-trained, identified, and professional lifesavers targeted by evil in society as they have been shot, injured, or murdered.
Why?
I wish I had the answer because it is my privilege to know many of the 800,000-plus officers for the human beings they are. They raise children, love families, struggle with health and financial issues, and come to work every day with the knowledge that because of what they represent and the anointing God has placed on them to protect the innocent in society, they are targeted by the evil in our world.
So for this moment, as you read this, I ask all of us to pray: pray harder and more deliberately than ever for God to protect and preserve every single one. May His Spirit ride alongside them and strengthen them, and even through the difficulties, may they find moments of joy. Let us celebrate their jobs well done and pray for a safe return home.
We need to give God thanks for the healing power shown to all the wounded, and we, all of us, need to lift our voices in gratitude for all who protect and serve their families and all the dispatchers and support personnel!

Living Our Best Lives

This week millions of Christians worldwide begin a 40-day journey of self-reflection, personal sacrifice, and prayer. In addition, many of us will start the Season of Lent with the imposition of ashes on our foreheads as a reminder of our mortality and promise of eternal life.
Traditionally people have given up something for this period of time, whether by fasting or denial. We've all heard: I'm giving up chocolate for Lent.
This year I would like to invite you to share in a slightly different practice. Living with a positive spirit and our best lives.
Instead of or in addition to giving up those things which, when done in moderation, bring us joy, let's focus on giving up those things which are negative influences and actions in our lives. Let's give up things like aggressive driving, irrational arguing, random prejudices, or anything else that causes us to separate ourselves from God. Let's put them on the altar of sacrifice and begin a permanent transformation to a better and more positive life.
Radical? Perhaps. But if life is a gift of God and gifts are to be cherished and enjoyed, let's begin today by making our lives the best ever!
Remember, our earthly body will become dust, but our souls live forever!

The Power of Jesus and Imagining
"Imagine that we could live each day as full of promises. Imagine that we could walk through the new year always listening to a Voice saying to us: "I have a gift for you, and I can't wait for you to see it!"

2023 has come, and most of us are returning to a work or school schedule today. But, some of us will hear voices in our heads as Jesus, who guides us through life.
Imagine, if you will, that each day we hear a promise, perhaps only for the next minute before us, but a promise nonetheless. And imagine that when that promise or dream comes to pass, another takes its place, and we thrive!
That's how I am looking at this New Year, this new beginning. Jesus is promising us guidance and support on our individual journeys, and we in turn can be the next moments a promise for someone who needs a partner.
It's a fresh, new year filled with hope, life, and light. Let's take it on, knowing Jesus is there with us.

Making God A Prayer Partner

Sometimes we forget to pray.
It might be starting to eat before grace is offered, not giving thanks for blessings received, or even just being so wrapped up in the moment that we forget...
So what happens when we remember? Do we "double down"? Or do we blow off the opportunity because we don't have the time to pause?
I spent most of yesterday in a hospital room with a family whose loved one was transitioning from this life to the next. A family of faith and I prayed together. We watched the miracle of modern medicine, blessed by God's grace and inspiration to calm the individual and allow peaceful sleep after a difficult morning. We prayed quietly, and we prayed together because our focus was obvious. God answered our prayers, sending the right people at the right time to care with compassion. Perhaps this is a drastic example, but I think not. We were able to pray calmly and with open hearts because prayers were being answered moment by moment.
At night, a friend asked me to "give a shout-out to the "Big Guy," acknowledging the need to pray for a specific request. As I did shout out, I knew we were praying together.
Spurgeon's message is so simple yet profound. Keep God in front of our minds, and praying is much easier. It can almost become a natural reaction to life itself and bring us the peace and joy we desire.
And if you find it difficult to pray, reach out; I'll pray with you.....

Choosing to Light A Candle
“If you want, you can find a million reasons to hate life and be angry at the world. Or, if you want to, you could find a million reasons to love life and be happy. Choose wisely."

This morning I began counting on both sides of this quote. What are the negatives in my life? What are the positives?
After a few minutes of listing both, something remarkable happened. I ran out of negatives and continued with the positives until that list was almost triple the negatives. And that was only after my first cup of coffee!
I found that the more good I listed, the better I felt, and I wanted to write down even more blessings. You see, I realize all good things come from God, and my life is blessed and filled with joy.
Sometimes you just have to write it down to believe it....
We all have this choice; curse the darkness or light a candle!
So this morning, take a few moments and write down those blessings, small or large. I know you'll smile when you're done. Then say a prayer of thanks for all God's gifts.
I am praying for people recovering from illness.

A vacation of our minds…
A different environment which allows our thoughts to flow freely…
A renewal that opens us up to infinite possibilities and opportunities…
But most importantly, a chance to hear God's voice that emanates from within our very souls and draws us closer to a Divine Love waiting to be experienced.....
It's so ironic that the season of peace on earth and goodwill to all has us typically running so much that moments of renewal and refocusing are so hard to find. Yet if we conform to the earthly patterns of society and fill our days so full that we can't squeeze anything else in, we lose the very best things in life.
Renewal of our minds often requires us to make time for the Divine when we don't think we can fit anything else in. Instead, we need to pause, listen and focus on the interpersonal relationships that bring us closer to one another and to the God Who loves us.
Today in the midst of all the tasks and responsibilities, and challenges in front of me, I intend to take a few moments to listen for God's voice and especially to pause and refresh my thought process. After all, God has my best interest in mind!

What Do I Need To Be Happy?

Do you want to be happy?
This a question we all face at one point in our lives, along with, "What do I need to be happy?"
Simply having an Attitude, spirit, faith, and the ability to share the story of our relationship with God with those willing and needing to hear it.
A fairly simple plan that puts the solution for happiness directly back on us. But not impossible!!
Think of it this way: if you hang around happy people, their attitude is infectious, and even on a bad day, they can lift you up. In addition, they typically look forward to the next blessing and receive it because the negative blockers have been set aside.
And if, as in many cases, they have a deepening relationship with Jesus as life progresses.
The recipe for happiness and joy is simple: carry a positive attitude and appreciate kindness and blessings. Life becomes more wondrous as we move forward.

Each morning when I wake, I begin to plan my day. Sometimes some activities are pre-scheduled, but usually, there's time for me to regroup and continue moving forward. Taking the day as the gift it is and making the most of it provides me with a sense of satisfaction and a good night's sleep when it's over.
How often do we just exist and coast through the day? When we do, are we engaging in a positive mental attitude, a sense of purpose, and gratitude for life?
Jesus offers us freedom! Freedom to live and thrive, freedom to succeed, freedom to choose to be happy with our efforts and results. Jesus gives us opportunities, and with our positive attitude, we just need to show up and do our best.
So today, I pray that you join me in taking life on, putting forth our very best, and enjoying everything it has to offer!

Good Morning!
Would you join me in a mid-week pause as we pray together.
"Loving God, thank You for this new morning! Allow us to be filled with wonder and awe at the power and majesty of Your creation. Show us all the beauty in front of us by opening the eyes of our hearts.
Today O God, even as we thank You for all good things, show us a better way, a way that blesses our work and play, that makes our contribution to the world just a bit more meaningful, that makes a difference for good.
As we pray in safety and comfort, we ask You to bless those that are struggling just to survive, to live in peace, and to thrive in Your gift of life!
May the words of our mouths and the works of our hearts bring You worship, honor, and praise.....

Mornings With God

As years go by and life is busier, I enjoy mornings most of all. The newness of the day to come, the light of sunrise, and of course, the smell and taste of that first cup of coffee is a great way to begin a new experience.
Over the years, I have learned never to take a day for granted but to appreciate each moment as a gift. Morning gives me a few minutes to focus, pray and contemplate my relationship with God and fellow human beings. It's that peace in the eye of storms that allows me to focus on the blessings I've received and how I can share them with others.
This morning, take the pause: focus on God's love and make today the best you've ever had. Then realize it already is......

Prisoners Of Hope
"Return to your fortress, you prisoners of hope; even now I announce that I will restore twice as much to you......"

Prisoners of hope. An exciting and interesting viewpoint in a Scripture that speaks of the promises of being hopeful. When we are hopeful and pray, good things happen. And a promise that our generosity will be returned to us doubly. A promise that if we return to the strength of our beings, only good will happen.
When we give, do we look for the return, or do we thrive in the act of giving?
About a week ago, I made a request at church for school supplies to help some local students and teachers. The response so far has been incredible, and because of the open-hearted generosity of the givers, we will be able to help another community. Giving a little bit of ourselves opens space for reception of more than we could imagine. A notebook here and a pencil there show a child that someone they don't know cares and shows the teachers that they have the support of the community.
Everyone wins, and we have made room for God to do His thing!
If we make a difference, God will make a difference for us.....
We are praying for all to have a hopeful heart!

Yesterday Was A Good Day

Yesterday was a good day. It began very early at the Pic A Lilli Inn with State Troopers, Explorers, people from the administrative staff, and volunteers from the church preparing over 300 hot meals to distribute in Atlantic City to those in need.
Church By The Bay volunteers had prepared the clothing, hygiene products, baby clothes, socks and blankets for all those in need.
We set up on the lawn at City Center Park and watched the love that started at the restaurant magnify. Everyone was treated with dignity and respect, and the smiles, thank you's, and warm feelings gave everyone a feeling of love and joy.
All of us working as one actually became the prayer of the day. Sometimes it's not the words or thoughts that form the prayers: sometimes it's the actions and giving the message of hope that shows love in a tangible way.
Yesterday was a good day....
Today I'm praying with gratitude for everyone who makes these opportunities happen. For all who give of their time, talents, treasure, and heart, may God bless you with more than you ever thought possible!

Do we?
Think of silence as a reprieve from the static and noise of life, not as something to be feared.
Appreciate the act of giving as an opportunity to show thankfulness for what we have, not as losing that which we feel we need or want.
Take the time to acknowledge and give God the worship and become willing receptacles of His love and abundance, not a faraway Being only to be feared.
Do we?
Today, let's appreciate the few moments of quiet and peace we find; be grateful for all that we have, even if we're still waiting for prayers to be answered; and just look up and recognize the vastness of the One Who loves us as we say: 'Thank You God!'

How do you renew your mind?
Is it an action that comes naturally, or do you need to find an exercise or new life pattern that allows spiritual and mental growth?
After a relatively quiet day Monday, my life is now back to normal. Opportunities are presenting themselves on many levels, and the days are filling up.
But things are different somehow.
My mind is clearer, and I'm feeling less rushed. Conversations are less stressful, and being busy doesn't feel overwhelming. Instead, I am listening for God's voice to come into my Spirit and provide the best direction for the next step of life.
The pattern of this life of ours is often over-busy, packed, and filled with unnecessary activities.
So today, I encourage us all to take one of those things we do almost on autopilot and pause it. Accept a few moments to breathe, experience God's gifts, and look forward to seeing clearly through the swirls.
Praying we hear God's message in whatever way it comes to us.

You Are A Child Of God!

Having a quiet day is relatively rare for me. No complaints, but it was nice not to run here and there. Feeling the warmth of the fireplace, hot coffee, and a favorite fleece put me in a very mellow mood.
That feeling caused a sense of gratitude to come over me, stronger and more intense and focused than I've had in recent memory. The simple things: a comfortable easy chair, roaring fire, hot coffee, and a well-worn fleece focused my mind and, more importantly, my heart on all I have to be thankful for.
Mostly, thankful I was a Child of God.
For those of us who thrive on being busy, please take a moment and feel the love that God continually sends down. Take time to sit in His presence and recharge, refill, and be warmed by His Spirit.
Maybe it won't be the entire day; perhaps it will only be a few minutes. It will be time we all need to refresh and experience the Father's never-ending love.
And always remember we are Children of God!

A Simple Prayer
Good Morning Everyone. May we pray together?
"Almighty God, when You sent Jesus to us, He taught us to ask, seek and knock. So today, as we begin a new day, we prayerfully come before You, putting His words into action."
We humbly ask for Your protection for all who protect us throughout the world in the military and here at home. Give our soldiers and all police officers Your protection as they fulfill the duties they are called.
We seek Your healing grace for all who are fighting battles of health and well-being. Heal the sick among us and comfort those who are feeling overwhelmed and tired. We lift up all those who have gone home to You and ask Your Spirit of hope on all who mourn.
And finally God, we knock, asking You to open the doors of all our hearts and fill them with Your love and peace; for we know that only through You can we live in serenity.
Thank You, God, for another day of life!

Allowing God to Give Us Inner Peace

Is your spirit feeling overwhelmed? Is there so much on your plate that you have trouble resting and bouncing back?
Learn how to follow!
Sometimes we just need to stop, give all our burdens over to Jesus, and allow Him to provide a moment of calm and rest.
No doubt this requires practice. The more we do, the better we get.
Still waters is a picture we place in our minds and memories that bring us a sense of inner peace and serenity. Allow God to guide us there, and we feel rejuvenated and ready to take on all that life puts in front of us.
But remember that this psalm requires us to be proactive. We need to stop, look and listen for Jesus' voice to lead us.

Do we treat God like a fire extinguisher? We know He's there in an emergency, and we don't pay much attention at other times.
Or do we treat God as changing the batteries in our smoke detectors? Once a year or at some other infrequent schedule, we pay attention and are grateful for the safety.
Or do we maintain a relationship with God that is more regular and healthy, which encourages our growth and success in our human condition?
This relationship reminds us of God's blessings. Being with God helps us observe how God is working in our lives. We will also find ourselves modeling our behavior to match the ways of God.
Today's Scripture encourages a level of communication with God on a regular basis to guide us and allow us to flourish as His children. Seeking God isn't only at those difficult times; it's a constant awareness and level of communication that shows us the best possible path to choose.
So today, breathe, accept His love and ask for direction; you won't be disappointed!

Seneca
How many of us think of luck as something random and unplanned? Whether good or bad, we may think of it as an out-of-control blessing or a curse.
When Seneca wrote this in the first century, luck was typically controlled by an emperor or king. Still, as the centuries passed, we began to control the circumstances of our lives on a more individual basis through knowledge and faith.
The most successful people I know have followed this philosophy in their lives, and it makes more sense now than ever. When an opportunity presents itself, prepare by planning, praying, and recognizing resources and blessings around you.
God truly rewards those who combine faith, hard work, and insight. Combined, all three create a life of thriving and not surviving. Luck truly is the moment our prayers, hard work, and knowledge visit our lives.
Today's opportunity is life. So live to the fullest, prepare for the storm, take a few minutes to reflect and pray and appreciate life for all it has to offer.

**Our Intimate knowledge of God will Set Us All Free
"**Knowledge makes a man unfit to be a slave....."

These words were spoken by a man who taught himself how to read and write. He later taught others the same skills by using the Bible as a study tool. Mr. Douglass could have easily backed away and enjoyed his personal freedom from slavery, but instead, he spoke often and taught many.
I believe his statement rings true for us all. If we acquire as much knowledge as possible, learn what is learnable, and put it to use, transforming lives for the better, are we not fulfilling the Creator's purposes by caring for society as a whole?
Knowledge of Sacred Scriptures allows us to live freely because we know God's grace is at work. That involves studying, discussing, and meditating on what we read. When we become more aware of God's presence, we free ourselves from earthly chains that bind.
Our freedom truly does come from our intimate knowledge and relationship with a Heavenly Father, Who has created us to live free and purpose-driven lives.

When we see something good and positive in life, do we reflect it and magnify the goodness, or do we snuff out the flame? The critical elements of having a perspective filled with joy are the three virtues given to all of us freely by God called Faith, Hope, and Love. Cynicism, outside influences, and general negativity can dull the mirror and snuff out the candle if we don't protect our spirit of joy. It's crucial for us to polish the mirror through prayer and meditation: and sometimes just taking a moment of gratitude and peace. It can be challenging but always possible. The Eyes of Our Heart Gives Us Hope and Optimism
I ask that the eyes of your heart may be opened, so that you may know the hope of His calling, the riches of His glorious inheritance in the saints, and the surpassing greatness of His power to us who believe...."
Ephesians 1:18-19
Opening the eyes of our hearts may seem to be an odd statement to some. However, when we choose to search for goodness and blessings: our lives become richer and fuller. We are able to weather the momentary squalls and move forward knowing we are supported by God.
When we recognize the Divine eyes of our hearts, we see so much of the richness that is right in front of us. And sometimes I have to remind myself that those eyes can get heavy and begin to close. When that happens we tend to fall into a funk and miss the joy that is all around.
God is giving us a beautiful landscape of life to observe and participate in. Let’s all open our eyes and take it all in!

Listening Quickly!

Last week, I had the opportunity to relax for an hour after a very long day, and before sleep took over. While channel surfing, I kept being reminded of COVID-19, the President taken to Walter Reed, and the noise of newscasters personal opinions.
Noise. Noise. Noise.
Is that the sum of life at this moment? The sounds of people talking without listening? The opinions that create fear and distrust? The lack of compassion and respect for fellow human beings who have their own struggles?
James authored some of the most direct and powerful verses in the New Testament. Virtually all of them addressed caring for one another in our human and Spiritual needs. Today's verse hits home. We need to listen and then respond deliberately and in measured form without anger and condemnation.
Let's listen carefully to each other and lift one another up through these times of fear, knowing that when the load is too heavy, God is there to give us strength and support us.....

God’s Grace Through Prayer

After watching last week’s debate, my heart hurt for all of us, especially our children. What should have been an informative 90 minutes to hear from two men vying for the most powerful position of leadership in the world turned into a free for all that quickly went out of control.
My heart hurts because how can we be an example for the future generations when we can't even have a conversation on issues that affect every one of us today? How can we guide people through difficult times when we can't even negotiate a standard debate with agreed upon rules?
This morning I had a thought when I went to my "go to" inspirational verse of "Hope will not leave us disappointed".
We have been here before. Debates have been harsh, but we tried to maintain a sense of decorum. Attacks were intense, but respectful. We have disagreed on much and cheered and jeered with raw emotions.
Yet we've made it until today by God's grace and through prayer. We must lift up all our leaders, including those we trust to bring us the news, to God in prayer. After witnessing last night first hand, I know this is hard, but more necessary now than ever before. We must rely on Divine guidance and love to get us through this season and allow us to prosper just as was promised in the Scriptures.

The Act of Giving is Divine
When you give to the needy, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, so that your giving may be in secret.
Matthew 6:3-4
Jesus was all about giving in a positive way. That's probably why this passage confused me for years. Lately I've come to realize a much deeper message that's contained within the words.
You see, we all are needy at some point in our lives. If you want to disagree; tell me how you changed your own diaper as a baby.
We all need something from someone at some time. The joy of giving and the gratitude of receiving comes more often not with fanfare or parades; but often with a smile or a tear or a hug. True giving elevates the recipient in a Divine and genuine way.
2020 hasn't been the best of years, but we're here. Over the next few months, we can be there for each other and give of ourselves and especially our time. Those gifts can truly make change happen.

And hope does not disappoint us, because God has poured out His love into our hearts through the Holy Spirit, Who has been given to us.."

It's been a rough few weeks for several towns in Atlantic County. Storms, COVID and several deaths that are highly impacting many of us. As I was with a few police officers yesterday discussing the suicide of a 29 year old, one of the young men said something that prompted this devotion.
"You can never give up hope..." was his comment. It kept swirling in my mind the rest of the day and most of the evening, because my go to phrase is "hope will not leave us disappointed".
Hope is in fact God's gift of His Holy Spirit in our lives. Through my darkest days the Holy Spirit got me through; and sometimes that Spirit came through someone else.
We all have received God's Spirit freely. We can keep It to ourselves for strength and we can share that Spirit with others to build that strength up.
Praying we use God's Spirit often!

Our Brokenness Lets God Light In!

"Kintsukuroi" is the traditional Japanese method of repairing pottery with precious metal so the repair becomes part of the history of the item.
Although you might see Hemingway and a Japanese repairman as opposites; I believe God has a defined purpose that intertwines both ideas. We are all flawed or broken in some way, some minor, some severe. God's healing power and presence comes in through the cracks in our human armor; and as we are healed, our experience becomes a precious tool and reminder that nothing is impossible with God. Those cracks then become the wisdom for us to help and heal others.
We are called to be healed and be healers. Turn towards the light of God and feel the cracks fill in with Divine Peace!

The Lord is merciful and compassionate; slow to anger, and giving of kindness and love......"
Psalm 145:8
Saturday was one of those typical Jersey summer days; humidity and temperature about equal, and the sun adding a bit to help bake. I received a notification early of a fatality in one of the communities where I serve as a police chaplain and arrived at the scene a short time later. Praying for the young man was about all that I could do as we all were waiting for the investigation to run its' course. While there, we received word of a fatal car accident and it was felt by all I could be of more service there.
I knew many of the officers and firefighters on scene, and had prayed with the NJ State Police Sergeant and crew at a diner in the past.
As we waited for the painstaking and thorough investigation with multiple agencies involved, I observed this Psalmist's verse being lived out. God was working through everyone on scene in so many ways. Here are just a few.
The main concern was for the family of the deceased: it was imperative to be 100% certain of the young man's identity. The secondary concern was for everyone on scene: I lost count of how many times I heard "Pastor Lou, you ok?" Or "_______ is having a tough time; can I have him talk to you?" Do you need water? We have some coffee if you'd like... and on and on. Kindness
And finally when we went to the parents' home, the officer showed a tenderness and compassion that only comes as a gift from God in sharing news that turns a family upside down.
God was present through all the events that day; and I wanted to take this time to say "Thank you" to all our first responders. You will always be in my thoughts and prayers; and I wish you peace and safety!
