The Tory politician tells MFR News says his dream of working at next year's World Cup is now over.
Violence has erupted onto the streets of Inverness city centre overnight, just a day after Police Scotland promised to double its efforts to tackle anti-social crime. Our reporter Bryan Rutherford witnessed a brawl between at least six young men as he was driving in the early hours of this morning. He told MFR News: "It was quite frightening, suddenly having a gang of young men appearing in the middle of the road..."
The final act was on stage as the shooting started - bullets rained down on crowds from the 32nd floor of a nearby hotel. An open air country music festival was taking place off the city's famous strip. Among the revellers was Helen Donellan from Inverness - who along with husband Jim - were caught up in the chaos as the bullets started to fly.

Assistant Chief Constable John Hawkins took questions LIVE on Scotland's Talk In. On the nationwide programme he defended the project to centralise police control rooms, meaning the closure of local call centres. Eventually all emergency calls to the constabulary will be dealt with in Govan, Dundee, and Edinburgh - for the whole of Scotland. One caller, David, from Inverness, told ACC Hawkins that he's experienced a lack of local knowledge when calling 999.

Caithness campaigners have dramatically quit a community group set up to improve the healthcare and safety of Wick hospital's patients. Dr Alison Brooks says she's "surprised" that the pressure group Caithness Health Action Team has quit her group. Kirsteen Campbell is the vice chair of CHAT which continues to campaign for health services to be fully returned to Wick's hospital.

As we reveal more of our findings from an exclusive MFR News investigation into the North's ambulances, the 999-service is defending its response times. All morning we've been hearing a Wick mum's terrifying experience - the day her son had an epileptic fit and his doctor needed an ambulance to take him all the way to Raigmore Hospital in Inverness, for treatment. Although 30-year-old Jenna Larnach claims it was 2-and-a-half-hours before an ambulance turned up, the Scottish Ambulance Service insists she did not have to wait that long - they say it was only 2-hours-and-4-minutes. The Scottish Ambulance Service says it was "an appropriate clinical response" in line with what the doctor asked for. An MFR News inverstigation into the Scottish Ambulance Service has uncovered an incident near Buckie where police officers were forced to rush a patient to the hospital in the back of their riot van, because the nearest ambulance was in Forres.
There's breaking news this morning as an MFR News investigation exclusively reveals that the health and safety watchdog's 'looking into concerns raised' about the North's ambulance service. Whistleblowers are warning that 999-crews are being over-stretched by non-emergency transfers of hospital patients from Caithness General in Wick and Dr Gray's in Elgin, to Raigmore Hospital in Inverness and Aberdeen Royal Infirmary. The Health and Safety Executive is deciding whether to hold an investigation. A spokesperson told MFR News: "H.S.E. is currently looking into a concern raised regarding Scottish Ambulance Service. We're unable to comment further at this stage in our enquiries." Meanwhile the Scottish Ambulance Service has, in a statement, admitted that 'staff are working harder than ever before' but insists it's 'supporting staff.' There's growing pressure on Highland Council to call safety inspectors into Wick Campus, as a petition for an independent review of the controversial overdue facility gathers pace. Dozens of people have signed it, including Highland MSP Edward Mountain, whose calls for a Scottish Government inquiry into safety concerns were rejected by ministers. But despite Holyrood's claims that it is a matter for Highland Council, petition creator Andrew Sinclair is warning ScotGov not to fob off families. He told MFR News: "The Scottish Government is obviously the highest authority when it comes to education, obviously it has a lot of money invested in this project [some £17million], so it's definitely in their interest to ensure that it is completed to the highest possible standard."

MFR News can exclusively reveal that Police Scotland's Major Crime unit is re-examining existing evidence gathered in 1997 when Kevin McLeod was found dead in Wick Harbour. The fresh police activity was sparked when his grieving mum June McLeod picked up the phone and called Scotland's Talk In on MFR2. Highland Council has confirmed that the contractor, which built several faulty Highland schools, "will still be a big player" in building more new schools in the future. There are ongoing issues at the unopened and delayed Wick Campus, as well as disruption at Noss Primary - both in Caithness - and the new Inverness Royal Academy in the Highland capital. All of the new facilities have been built by Morrison Construction. MFR News asked the local authority whether it has lost faith in the builders. But the local authority's leader Margaret Davidson is blaming hub North Scotland which co-ordinated the new developments. She told MFR News: "Some of that's been failing. Morrison Construction is doing their level best to meet requirements, and I'm confident that in the future they will still be a big player in building our schools." We can't tell you very much about what Margaret Davidson's thoughts are on the issue of these troubled new schools, because our interview with the councillor was stopped by a council official. Morrison Construction continues to tell us that no one is available for interview, and hub North Scotland continues to ignore our interview requests. We're hearing more about the help that workers in Inverness could be getting as they face being among 80-people losing their jobs at LifeScan. It's as the diabetes care company's owner Johnson and Johnson shakes-up its business interests across the world, to compete with the so-called changing market. Local MP Drew Hendry told MFR News: "LifeScan is a significant employer for the Highlands, and news of this consultation will obviously cause a lot of worry and upset, especially amongst the people who work there and their families. "If the job numbers suggested are confirmed, this will be a very harsh blow to the work force, their families, and to the people of Inverness and the Highlands. "There may be such a big reduction in the number of people employed that this will impact directly on our communities. "Supporting those who now face the prospect of their jobs being lost must be our number one priority. "I'll work with the Scottish Government and with everyone else who can help to exhaust all potential avenues to ensure the future of the Inverness business and its employees." The 20-year-old from Inverness was taken into foster care with her younger brother after a breakdown in the family. But the devastation didn't end there for Jemma...not only was her mum taken away from her, she lost her brother too. And 17-year-old Rebecca - also who's in foster care in the Highland capital - tells us how losing her mum to cancer changed her life forever.

Police are re-appealing for information about a serious assault that took place in Inverness in the early hours of Sunday the 1st of January. Shortly before 2am a man was found lying on the pavement at the junction of Craigton Avenue and Bridgeview Drive in the South Kessock area of Inverness. The man, in his mid-20s, appeared to have been beaten up, bleeding heavily from numerous wounds to his face and neck which appear to have been caused by a weapon. He was treated in hospital but will have permanent injuries as a result of the attack. Police believe the injured man had been in the Kessock Road area prior to being assaulted. Officers are carrying out house-to-house enquiries in the area to find witnesses to this incident.
Moray is in the spotlight this morning as a Kinloss woman finds herself among 29-Brits chosen for a British Citizen Award (BCA). The BCAs were launched in January 2015 to recognise exceptional individuals who work tirelessly and selflessly to make a positive impact on society. They are awarded twice a year putting ‘everyday’ people whose achievements may otherwise by overlooked into the public spotlight. Janis Thomson, who lives in Upper Hempriggs, is being recognised for playing a lead role in creating a community hall for Kinloss. The 63-year-old got involved 15-years-ago because the area needed a place to stage activities.

More than 500-protestors crowded Nairn's Central Beach on Sunday afternoon, to fight Cromarty's port authority's plans to transfer crude oil between ships. The authority (CFPA) claims that over the last 30-years 250-ship-to-ship oil transfers have taken place - according to port bosses "without incident" - but campaigners say they were carried out at Nigg Oil Terminal's jetty within the Cromarty Firth. Steve Truluck explained: "Nigg jetty allows the ships to moor up to it in the sheltered confines of the Cromarty Firth. "The ships are out of the strong tidal flow, fixed to a jetty which is attached to the land. "There's also a facility to sterilise the ballast water. "But CFPA are applying for a licence because the new process is entirely different. "The anchorage sites are in the Moray Firth. They are fully exposed to the stronger tidal flow and weather. The ships are just anchored. There's no connection to land. There's no facility to sterilise the ballast water." Christmas gifts have been given out early in Caithness, after dozens of candy canes were left on car windscreens. They were left with messages reading: 'This cane was left with festive cheer, wishing you and yours, love and kindness at Christmas time xxxx.' Graeme Gunn from the Mount Vernon area of Thurso told MFR News: "There are quite a few houses in my area, and as far as I know, pretty much all of the cars have had one on their windscreen. "I was heading into town and I put the wipers on, and I heard something scrape along the window - turns out it was one of these candy canes." The 41-year-old has put his candy cane on his Christmas tree at home, and says the festive gesture has been well received by his neighbours: "Everyone who's received one has had a smile on their face. "Whoever's done it - they haven't done it for recognition. They've just decided it's a nice thing to do. "At first I had a rough idea who it was, and it turns out I was wrong. So the plot thickens. We still don't know who sent them out." Graeme Gunn tells MFR News about the discovery.
The killer of Inverness-born Gordon Semple has been sentenced to a minimum of 24-years in prison. The 59-year-old Met Police Officer went missing in April, after he was invited to his killer's home via a dating app. Fifty year old crystal meth addict Stefano Brizzi was then arrested with traces of Gordon's body found in his home.
Wick High School is opening its doors to the public for the very last time today, as staff and pupils prepare to move to brand new facilities elsewhere. Next year's move will mark the end of more than 100-years of teaching at the site, where graffiti by three-generations of the same family has been found on the same wall. IT teacher Chris Aitken has been helping to record the school's history, which is on show from 10am until 3pm. The 33-year-old is well known for Tweeting videos of his hi-tech and interactive lessons. He told MFR News: "Graffiti has been found - well, at one point it would have been called graffiti, but now we call it history. We've found graffiti from 1917, all the way up to last year. "We've had graffiti of ex-teachers, current teachers, ex-pupils, children, grandchildren, parents. We've had three-generations of a family signing the same piece of wall." MFR can reveal that the NHS plans to change midwife staffing for Caithness and Sutherland - just a week after downgrading Wick's hospital's maternity services. The health board says 'how a midwife is accessed may differ in the future' with staff on hand between 8am and 8pm, and midwives could be just a phone call away for the other 12-hours, if needed at Caithness General. Leaked papers have revealed 126-jobs are at risk at Highland Council which is preparing to make £20million of spending cuts. The region's deprived area fund is facing a cut in three-quarters of its budget, and adult social care could lose £4million next year. Budget boss Bill Fernie tells MFR News reporter Bryan Rutherford that he's disappointed with the trade union behind the leaked report, which councillors have not yet voted on.

The NHS is trying to calm the fears of pregnant Caithness and Sutherland mums after cutting back their local healthcare services. It'll mean women with complications being rushed by ambulance more than 100 miles away to Raigmore hospital in Inverness. Caithness mums have gone home in tears after their protest failed to stop Wick's maternity services being downgraded. They gathered outside NHS Highland's HQ this morning, before board members approved plans to allow midwives to run the unit at Caithness General. The shake-up means midwives will only handle so-called straight-forward births, but rely on specialists in Inverness to treat complications - but first the patients must be driven to Raigmore Hospital by ambulance. That's a journey of over 100-miles and can take over 2.5-hours along Scotland's most dangerous road, the A9. Demolition work on the former Inverness Royal Academy school building starts today, and we're hearing some childhood memories. Aileen Thomson, who is 42-years-old and from Lochardil, is looking forward to her own kids going to the new school next door which opened in the summer. The old site is being cleared to allow for a school playground, car parking, and two-sports pitches. Aileen has told MFR News about her first day at the old IRA in 1986. The former Head Girl (1992) said: "The way we got round the building was with a map. No guided tour, no transition days - it was straight into it." Aileen tells us the story about the photo above, a Royal visit, and how it felt being back in the school 30-years on for a special tour and reunion. The demolition is expected to be completed in early 2017.
From the North Pole to the North East – Santa really is coming to town today.
He’ll be making an appearance in Elgin this afternoon ahead of tonight’s big Christmas light switch-on.
The festivities begin at 11am with a children’s parade. Santa will then turn up on his sleigh with a few of his reindeer around 2pm and lights will be switched on at 5pm.

A Buckie schoolgirl has died after a "horrific" crash on the road to Keith last night. Neringa Narusyte was among five teenagers between aged between 14 and 17 who rode in a black Vauxhall Corsa which collided with a grey Nissan Terrano. It happened after 10:30pm on the B9016 Keith to Buckie road near Rye Riggs, Aultmore. Two girls were seriously injured but are stable at Dr Gray's Hospital in Elgin, but a 14-year-old girl is fighting for her life in a Glasgow hospital after being airlifted there. Plans to cut down the number of Westminster politicans would force a Highland MP into unemployment. The number of seats in the UK Parliament's House of Commons would fall from 650 down to 600. But, how will that impact the North? The Boundary Commission is proposing the Highlands' three-constituencies ('Inverness, Nairn, Badenoch and Strathspey', 'Ross, Skye and Lochaber', and 'Caithness, Sutherland and Easter Ross') be replaced with just two voting areas - one called 'Inverness and Skye', and the other called 'Highland North'. That means a potential battle between the three existing MPs who could be one seat short at the next General Election, although it is unclear whether they would all stand, given they are all members of the same party - the SNP - which could only put forward one candidate per constituency. And subject to a public consultation Nairn could come under the current MP for Moray. Our reporter John Rose has been investigating, and newsreader Joe Odber brings you his report.
In 2015-16 there were around 3,000 people in the NHS Highland & Gampian areas needing non-emergency patient transport service from the Scottish Ambulance Service.
A Fraserburgh family say they're living in fear, because their business keeps being vandalised. Avril Murray's car dealership has been plagued by incidents of paint-stripper being thrown over its South Road vehicles. Even her brand new VW Beetle was targetted outside her home, which ruined the 54-year-old's birthday present. In the last 15-years over 60-cars at Avril's dealership have been damaged, forcing the business to claim over £100,000 from the insurers. She told MFR News: "It's starting to affect our health now. "My husband had a heart attack in 2012. "Things are starting to take their toll. "We do live in fear, especially when they started targetting our home. "My kids were just small at the time. "We're scared to go on holiday. "We have to get security in when we do go, just to keep an eye on the place."

The Liberal Democrats held off the SNP to take a seat from Labour on Highland Council (Culloden & Ardersier) in a by-election following the death of a Labour councillor.
Labour suffered a swingeing defeat, drawing just 163 first-preference votes.
Although the Scottish Nationalists topped the first-preference votes, the outcome was decided in favour of the Lib Dems on transfers after a recount of the seventh and final stage of counting under the single transferable vote (STV) system.

Two thousand new jobs could be created in Inverness, if the go-ahead is given to develop the unused landfill site at the Longman. It is one of five projects worth almost £50million combined, which are part of Highland Council's plans to spend the £315million City-Region Deal, that is expected to attract a further £800million of private investment in the Highlands over the next 20-years. The Inshes to Smithton Link Road, grade separation of the Longman Interchange, and West Link road improvements is among the major infrastructure work that will also be funded by the investment. Land equivalent to 18-hectares could be used to build industrial and commercial units at the Longman landfill over the next decade. An Australian family battling to stay in the UK expect to meet lawyers next week about a job offer they hope will enable them to avoid deportation.
Gregg and Kathryn Brain need to find a job which satisfies Home Office visa requirements so they can remain in the UK.
They were due to meet lawyers in Glasgow on Thursday but said on Wednesday night a "hiccup with paperwork" means the meeting has been delayed.
Mr Brain said: "We're still making progress forward and a prospective employer is still keen to get this resolved."
They now hope the meeting will take place next week.
A previous job offer the family hoped would provide a solution fell through but a second offer has been put forward from what Mr Brain said is a "major Scottish employer".
He added: "We're hoping to establish that we do have an offer that meets the requirements and then we can submit an application to the Home Office."
Before the family can make a new application, either Mr or Mrs Brain needs to secure a skilled job with a salary of at least £20,800 a year.

There's a modern day mystery on the waters of Loch Ness after a boat was found drifting with no one in sight. The discovery before 07:00 this morning sparked a rescue mission at the north end, between Torr Point and the Wellington Layby. Martin Douglas from the RNLI told MFR News that it is unlikely anyone went overboard. He said: "Our fear in this case might have been that someone could have been attempting to access their yacht or their boat using the tender - they'd fallen overboard, and any time that you spend in Loch Ness when you're not prepared - haven't got a wetsuit on - is life threatening. "The boat had debris in it, and when boats are tied up outside a small mooring you get bits of wood and leaves, and it certainly gave every indication that it is a boat that has been outside for some time. "Three crew members were able to search the area, couldn't see anybody in the water, or any evidence of anybody in the water, so they recovered the dinghy and took it back to the lifeboat station where, hopefully we'll be able to get the boat safely to its owner." It's emerged that Kinloss Barracks will not be immune from a review into potential base-closures. Moray's MP Angus Robertson is claiming a defence official has told him the site's future is being considered. It's part of a UK-wide rethink on military spending which could lead to defence site closures, although no decisions have been made yet. There is already a campaign to prevent Fort George near Ardersier from being shut.

A motorcyclist is being treated at Raigmore Hospital this morning after being thrown from his bike on the banks of Loch Ness.
He was travelling along the A82 near Glenmoriston when the accident happened at around 1.40pm yesterday afternoon.
Emergency services helped rescue the man from the edge of the loch, with the help of lifeboat volunteers from RNLI.

Nicola Sturgeon will present the Queen with a commemorative stone bench at the annual Garden Party at the Palace of Holyrood House. The First Minister said the hand-crafted gift comes with the “warm wishes” of the people of Scotland in the Queen's 90th birthday year. Clashach stone from Moray has been used to create the bench and its timber seating slats are made from a felled elm tree planted at Holyroodhouse under the direction of Prince Albert and Queen Victoria. Designed by Historic Environment Scotland and crafted by modern apprentice stonemasons based in Elgin, it has been carved with a rose, Lion Rampant and stag's head motifs. The Garden Party takes place on Tuesday afternoon following an investiture which will see leading molecular biologist Professor Anne Glover and Scottish Parliament chief executive Paul Grice honoured with a damehood and knighthood respectively. Ms Sturgeon, who had an audience with the Queen at Holyroodhouse on Monday, said: “On behalf of the people of Scotland I would like to personally send our warm wishes to Her Majesty The Queen on her 90th birthday. “Last year we were fortunate to be able to celebrate with Her Majesty as she became the United Kingdom and Commonwealth's longest-serving monarch. “It was an incredible day and it was clear the huge affection Her Majesty had for Scotland and the tremendous bond she has forged with people across our country over her many years of dedicated public service. “Our present was specially designed with Her Majesty in mind and each carved element required many hours of focused concentration and advanced stonemasonry skills. “I would like to join the thousands of people across the country toasting Her Majesty as her birthday celebrations continue during her annual visit during Royal Week in Scotland.” Designer David Storrar from Historic Environment Scotland said: “It was a huge privilege to be asked to help with making a gift on behalf of Scotland to Her Majesty, and our staff were very excited to be involved. “It was a real team effort and we're delighted with the final product.” Stonemason apprentice Charlotte Brough added: “I was very honoured to be asked to do the cavetto surrounding the lettering on the bench, and also quite nervous knowing it would be presented to the Queen. It's after Highland Council this afternoon held a meeting in its chamber in which the capital's councillors voted to scrap the proposed tourist attraction. Its backers had promised it would rake in £150,000 in new income for Inverness, and therefore pay for itself within two-years. Public officials had previously confirmed that the outdoor artwork would be built on the banks of the River Ness - opposite Eden Court - by June 2017, if councillors voted to give the project planning permission to build. That's despite the backlash on social media, and over 2,000-people backing an internet petition to halt the project which has already used a fifth of its budget. Most of the money - 60-per-cent or £180,000 - going towards the tilting pier was either national arts funding or specifically granted on condition that the finance was spent on making sure the see-saw structure went ahead. Now the local authority faces being forced by Creative Scotland and Highlands and Islands Enterprise to give back the funding. Council workers are currently looking into alternative projects to replace the pier, and are hoping to gain permission from the orgnanisations to keep the grants and use them to pay for something else. A meeting today has heard that there could be up to two-years of economic uncertainty for the North following last week's referendum result. As the UK prepares to negotiate its BREXIT, the local authority's leader Margaret Davidson insists it will be "business as normal" for the administration. She told MFR News: "We will be working as a council to explore what this decision might mean for the Highlands and how we can best respond to that. "We need to promote confidence and be as positive as we can be. "The drop in sterling will indeed mean it will be easier for Highland businesses to export and for foreign tourists to come and visit the Highlands. "Council business and services will continue as usual and we will endeavour to provide as much stability as we can during the uncertain times ahead." Planners have given their unanimous support for a second championship golf course to be built at the renowned Castle Stuart Golf Links in partnership with the Arnold Palmer Group.
Detailed plans to develop the Palmer Tribute course adjacent to the existing links, which hosts next week’s Aberdeen Asset Management Scottish Open, were lodged with Highland Council in October.

That survey did relate to a different site to the confirmed location opposite Eden Court though. Now there are fears that Inverness is facing a future arts funding vacuum. The man in-charge of the group pushing plans for a tilting pier on the banks of the River Ness in Inverness has resigned. The so-called public art installation set to cost three quarters of a million pounds has been controversial at a time of massive cuts to Highland Council's budgets. As a result the Chair of the working group behind the proposed development has resigned with immediate effect. In a Facebook post Councillor Ken Gowans says he doesn't believe that the tilting pier will have "any realistic chance of public support." He claims to be willing to take personal public criticism for what he strongly believes in, but says it's unreasonable to ask him to do the same for a project he is "not personally in favour of." A canoeist, thought to be missing on Loch Ness. has been found by rescuers in a pub at Dores, unaware of the searches for him. A decision on whether to continue free late afternoon parking in two Elgin multi-storey car parks has been deferred.
The initiative – which ran for seven months on a trial basis – will now form part of a much wider review of parking in the town.
The review was approved by councillors in December as part of plans to develop a parking strategy for Elgin.
The Free After 3 trial ran from June until January this year at the St Giles and Batchen Lane multi-storeys and followed a request from the Elgin Business Improvement District (BID) which believed it would help stimulate retail activity in the town centre.

Gas engineers say damage to the pipeline, by a third party, was the cause of yesterday’s leak in Muir of Ord.
Train services were suspended and school pupils at both Tarradale Primary and Dingwall Academy were kept indoors until the area was declared safe.
It took workmen more than two hours to stop the leak and around 260 homes were left without gas overnight while engineers monitored the situation.

Five firefighters are being treated at Raigmore Hospital in Inverness after two fire engines came off the road at Newlands of Culloden.
Two of the eight crew members, who were on board, were trapped in one of the appliances, and had to be rescued by some of their colleagues.
Ambulances later took five male crew members who had been injured to hospital.
A spokesman for the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service said: "At this point we are pleased that none of the injuries are life threatening or life changing."
The two appliances left Inverness fire station shortly after 7am on Saturday, after receiving a call about a car crash.
The vehicles, which each had four firefighters on board, were travelling in convoy, with flashing blue lights on, when they came off the B9006 road at Newlands of Culloden.
Two firefighters were trapped in one of the vehicles, but colleagues who had escaped and who were uninjured were able to rescue them, the spokesman added.
He said "Five of the eight were taken to Raigmore Hospital by ambulance, and they all remain in hospital at present."
After the incident, a third fire engine from Inverness was sent in response to the road traffic collision.
The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service has also moved a fire appliance from Aberdeen and another from Dundee to its Inverness base, to ensure services in the Highlands are maintained.
Police Scotland are investigating the cause of the accident.
The MP for Inverness - Drew Hendry - has come under fire from the Speaker of the House in the UK Parliament.
