Churchosity Podcast: Recent Episodes

We’re just a couple of "GenXers" trying to give our perspective on Church culture. This podcast is dedicated to the GenX Christians: The ones who just want to keep it simple. The ones who just want to live quiet, peaceable lives. We represent the generation of Christians who sometimes looks at what others are doing and thinks: “Whatever.”

We're back! And we're ready to begin our conversation about the armor of God! Like many of us, we were victims of our Sunday School coloring books which didn't really do that great of a job expressing the realness of the Christian's struggle against the evil of the world.

In this episode, we begin unveiling just how imperative the Apostle Paul was in his instructions to the Ephesian church to "...put on the full armor of God!" While we have nothing to fear (because God is for us), we need to be prepared for the wiles of the devil as he attempts to render The Church ineffective...especially in 2024.

Sunday, May 19th, 2024 was Pentecost Sunday on our Church calendars. So, we wanted to have a candid conversation about the many "layers" of the day that birth the Apostolic Church.

Listen as we have a lot of fun looking at how this epic day unfolded, its backstory, and its primary prerequisite for occurring. We pray this episode edifies and encourages you to remember that He that is in YOU is greater than he that is in the world. That "He" is the Holy Spirit! AMEN!

We are ALL "Seed Planters" and it's just a fact we need to face. So much that we feel the need to deep a little deeper into the subject of seeds, plants, and fruit. In this episode, we're wrapping up our series on the Fruit of the Spirit: Self-Control. As we come to the end of this conversation, we want to challenge Christians to remember the work of salvation that Christ has done on the inside and see the fruit that we demonstrate on the outside.

Listen as we laugh about hanging out at the mall, chew on some theology from Paul and Peter, and discover some amazing truths about sanctification. This one was really fun!

Faithfulness and Goodness...not the easiest behaviors to habitually practice, are they? We get it. That's why we're here to dive into them headfirst with you. Listen as we discuss where faithfuness and goodness come from, how they are cultivated, and what sort of ripple effects are brought about from them.

The Fruit of the Spirit is all about Christ living THROUGH us and the greatest demonstration of HIS righteousness being put on display is these two fruits. Join us while we laugh at ourselves, and yet, talk very seriously about the leading of the Spirit encompassing the whole life of a Christian.

After a long (and much needed) hiatus...Heath and Andrea are BACK!

We pick up our conversation about the Fruit of the Spirit. In this episode, we discuss joy. What is it? Or rather, what is it NOT? How can we experience joy, especially when life gets hard? Is there a difference between joy and happiness?

Listen as we attempt to answer these questions, and take a hard look at what our real source of joy looks like. Grab your pads and pens...you don't want to miss this one!

We're continuing our conversation about the Fruit of the Sprit and we are going hard on the topic of love. Specifically, what is the difference between the biblical "agape" love, and what the human, worldly understanding of love is?

What are the evidences of love? What does it mean to be led by the Spirit? Comparing love to the deeds of the flesh, as defined in Galatians 5, we want Christians to take a hard look at how we truly treat one another in the Church.

It' a new series! We're talking about the Fruit of the Spirit and we've been waiting a long time for this one!

As an introduction to this series, we open up the conversation by discussing two questions:
1. What has Christ brought us out of?
2. What has Christ brought us to?

In typical fashion, we combine humor and candor while we start cutting to the core of what it looks like to practically live out our Christian lives everyday. We think you're really going to like this one!

When the Spirit of God moves, what do we do? Continuing our discussion about Revival, we're really driving home the importance of being in action and serving in our local churches.

Using our brief review of the movie, "Jesus Revolution," we've got a lot to say about the ripple effects of just simply being obedient and faithful where we're at. Listen as we talk about being Christ's witnesses, discipling the next generation, and realizing the power we have in Christ.

What is keeping us from being in action when the Spirit of God is moving in our churches? Why are so many of us wishing for ministries to grow, but unwilling or unable to be part of them?

We're continuing our conversation about Revival! In this episode, we want to challenge ourselves to stop being afraid and start doing something for the Kingdom. Listen as we discuss the need for more workers, plead for more help in youth and children's ministry, and call out for Christians to be more about others.

If you are looking for a sign to get into the game...this is it!

It's a riff episode!

We're talking about Revival! "Sparked" by the Asbury Revival, we wanted to have an honest and candid conversation about what has taken place on the campus of Asbury College and Theological Seminary. Is that what "Revival" looks like? Is this the "Spark" of something God is doing in America?

Listen as we discuss how we can bring the brevity of this massive move of the Holy Spirit in one place to the context of our local churches and communities. We know that we're barely scratching the surface here. But let's begin taking a look at what a move of God could look like in each of us, and how that shifts outwardly.

We believe that the Church needs to be central to the life a believer. Is church just something you check off as a weekly thing to do? Or should it be something more? Hear what we have to say about that and so much more.

Are you ready to have some fun digging into the Scriptures? We sure are...and we have a LOT of it on this episode!

How far do you think God is willing to go in order to get a message across to us? Is there a consistent theme throughout all of Scripture? In this episode, we do our best to answer these two questions, and we have a few good laughs along the way.

Listen as we dive into the middle of the story of Abraham, cover lots of Scripture, and through the use of some provocative typology, discover what may actually be a hidden message to the people of God. We're wrapping up our series on Confession & Forgiveness, and we're going out with a real banger here. The time has come to really lay it all on the line about how serious God is about His people forgiving each other.

Listen as we discuss Christ's direct involvement in the reconciliation process, how we need to change our perspective about forgiveness, and why those resenting or leaving the church need us to flip the deconstruction culture upside down.

We love the people of God so much and our desire is to demonstrate Christ's love through all we say and do. But, if you thought we already traveled into the thick of it...be ready; it's about to get thicker.

Forgive and forget. That's what we hear over and over again...it's what we're supposed to do, right? But how many times? How often? What if the person who's offended us never apologizes? What if they never knew they offended us? We try to tackle these thoughts, and many more, in this episode.

As we continue our conversation about Confession and Forgiveness, listen as we deep dive into the heart of reconciliation, and talk about some points that probably aren't too popular in church culture. Do people owe us an apology? Are there conditions to forgiveness? You'll hear us do the best we can to challenge Christians to be just as forgiving as God has been with us.

Confession & Forgiveness: How do they work together?

We're opening up a serious discussion about an area of the Christian faith that is widely misunderstood and highly overlooked. Although Christ has paid our penalty for sin, and we are saved, Scripture clearly tells us that we still must confess our sins to God...and to each other.

In this first episode of the conversation, we're talking about Confession. What is it? Why do we need it? How do we do it? What are the benefits? We think what we have to say on the matter...just might surprise you.

Are you feeling fantastical???

The holidays can be tough for a lot of people. And we're smart enough to realize that it isn't always easy to feel "fantastical" around this time because so many of us are just simply, going through it. We want to give you some assurance that we get it. But we also want to challenge everyone to shift the perspective to what is still good in our lives.

In this episode, we're talking about the new year and how we can step outside our comfort zones to try something new...even if it is just to find ways to be grateful for how God has blessed us. Listen as we discuss how our problems and trials bring about strengthened character, and lead to a place where we lack nothing when it comes to how we yield to the leading of the Holy Spirit in every area of our lives.

Listen as they challenge the status quo of self-love, talk candidly about the parable of the Prodigal Son, and remind us how we are supposed to prioritize ourselves: deny yourself, take up your cross, and consider others greater than ourselves.

NEW SERIES
"The Hypocrisy of Cancel Culture"

Cancel Culture: When someone gets shunned or tossed out or “cancelled” by someone else because they have allegedly behaved or spoken in a manner that is contrary to the person doing the cancelling.

It's almost like the world is granting you the right to cancel:

  • Someone who disagrees with you
  • Someone who sticks up for themselves
  • Someone who raises their voice to you
  • Someone who fits into a certain people group or demographic

Heath is flying solo on this episode. Listen as he introduces this series by discussing how this culture is very much alive and kicking in the Church. One thing that especially seems to mirror the world’s standard of judging others is how we in the Church seem to almost be chomping at the bit to find something wrong with another person so we can cancel them.

Colossians 3:12-13 “So, as those who have been chosen of God, holy and beloved, put on a heart of compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience; bearing with one another, and forgiving each other, whoever has a complaint against anyone; just as the Lord forgave you, so also should you.”

Sensationalism...what is it?

  • The use of sensational subject matter, usually intentionally controversial, exaggerated or attention-grabbing
  • The use of strongly emotional subject matter, or wildly dramatic style, language or artistic expression, that is intended to shock, startle, thrill, excite, etc.

In this episode we discuss three more areas of sensationalism: Polarization of People Groups, Fear Culture, and Christian Nationalism. Listen as we really talk about some of "the tough stuff" coming against The Church and, while trying to keep it light, Heath has a strong message for a certain group of people.

2 Tim 2:16-18: “But avoid worldly and empty chatter, for it will lead to further ungodliness, and their talk will spread like gangrene. Among them are Hymenaeus and Philetus, men who have gone astray from the truth saying the resurrection has already taken place, and they upset the faith of some.”

Continuing our conversation about spiritual abuse we dive into the topic of "Church Hurt" with our good friend Josh Lofthus, co-host of "The Reformatory" podcast.

There comes a point when the abuse has gone on for so long, and the pain is too unbearable, that the only option is to leave your church; when Jesus becomes literally all you have because the healing won’t happen at your church.

What is “Church Hurt?” This is the damage that has been caused by the abuse, the wounds that have been inflicted by the abuser, and the pain and suffering the victim will experience while trying to heal. Spiritual abuse is the hardest form of abuse to heal from, and counsel, because the thing that brings the healing (Scripture/Gospel/Church) is the same thing that brought the hurt.
