Next Steps this WeekBIBLE READING: Luke 2:1-18In those days Caesar Augustus issued a decree that a census should be taken of the entire Roman world. (This was the first census that took place while Quirinius was governor of Syria.) 3 And everyone went to their own town to register.

So Joseph also went up from the town of Nazareth in Galilee to Judea, to Bethlehem the town of David, because he belonged to the house and line of David. He went there to register with Mary, who was pledged to be married to him and was expecting a child. While they were there, the time came for the baby to be born, and she gave birth to her firstborn, a son. She wrapped him in cloths and placed him in a manger, because there was no guest room available for them.

And there were shepherds living out in the fields nearby, keeping watch over their flocks at night. An angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified. But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid. I bring you good news that will cause great joy for all the people. Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is the Messiah, the Lord. This will be a sign to you: You will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger.”

Suddenly a great company of the heavenly host appeared with the angel, praising God and saying,

“Glory to God in the highest heaven,

and on earth peace to those on whom his favor rests.”

When the angels had left them and gone into heaven, the shepherds said to one another, “Let’s go to Bethlehem and see this thing that has happened, which the Lord has told us about.”

So they hurried off and found Mary and Joseph, and the baby, who was lying in the manger. When they had seen him, they spread the word concerning what had been told them about this child, and all who heard it were amazed at what the shepherds said to them.

  1. Have you received any ‘Years in Reviews’ this year? What do you like and dislike about them?
  2. What is your earliest memory of Christmas? Was there a point in your life in which the real meaning of Christmas became significant to you?

Read Luke 2:1-14

  1. What was the context of Jesus’ birth? What aspects of the story are remarkably ‘ordinary’ or ‘low key’?
  2. What would it have been like for Mary and Joseph? How is it evident that they trusted in God?
  3. As you think about Jesus’ life, what is the evidence that points to his humanity? (Try to think of the full spectrum of his life, his physicality, along with his emotions.)
  4. If the Son became truly human, does this mean he abandoned being God for a time? Why or why not?
  5. How does emphasising Jesus’ humanity over his divinity—or his divinity over his humanity—ultimately distort our relationship with God? Can you think of some practical examples?
  6. What does the angel announce to the shepherds? What do these various titles mean?
  7. Why was this announcement Good News? How was this good news for all people—including us?
  8. How can we plunge both the hard things and the good things that we experience into Jesus?
  9. In what way is Christmas a ‘magnifier’ of our year? How can we bring God’s love and good news to those in our lives who have had (or continue to experience) particularly difficult times?
  10. How do we become part of the Christmas story?
  11. How has your year with God been in 2022? How would you like it to look similar in 2023? How would you like that relationship to look different in 2023?
  12. Has there been a point in our Advent series (on the ‘wonder of the incarnation’) that has been significant for you? How might this shape your relationship with God in 2023?

To be sure, sin was in the world before the law was given, but sin is not charged against anyone’s account where there is no law. Nevertheless, death reigned from the time of Adam to the time of Moses, even over those who did not sin by breaking a command, as did Adam, who is a pattern of the one to come.

But the gift is not like the trespass. For if the many died by the trespass of the one man, how much more did God’s grace and the gift that came by the grace of the one man, Jesus Christ, overflow to the many! Nor can the gift of God be compared with the result of one man’s sin: the judgment followed one sin and brought condemnation, but the gift followed many trespasses and brought justification. For if, by the trespass of the one man, death reigned through that one man, how much more will those who receive God’s abundant provision of grace and of the gift of righteousness reign in life through the one man, Jesus Christ!

Consequently, just as one trespass resulted in condemnation for all people, so also one righteous act resulted in justification and life for all people. For just as through the disobedience of the one man the many were made sinners, so also through the obedience of the one man the many will be made righteous.

  1. What is your most favourite movie of all time and why? What do the characters shape the plot?
  2. Who do you think are the main characters in the overarching story of the Bible? How do they shape the story of the history of the world?

Read Romans 5:12-14

  1. How did sin and death enter the world through ‘Adam’? In what way does all of humanity share in these consequences? How are all of us also individually responsible?
  2. What is sin? How would you explain sin to someone who had never—ever—heard of the concept?
  3. What are the ways in which we all rebel against God, his rule, and his desires for us?
  4. What is the consequence of sin? Whilst we might try, how are we incapable of escaping the rule and consequences of sin?

Read Romans 5:15-19

  1. In what ways is Jesus the ‘new Adam’? What did Jesus do that we (nor anyone else) cannot?
  2. Try to brainstorm the various ways in which Jesus fulfils where Adam failed.
  3. If the old Adam opened a ‘way of death’, how does the ‘new Adam’ (Jesus) open a way of life?
  4. How does the arrival of Jesus shape the entire future course for humanity and creation?
  5. In what way does Jesus’ obedience (even unto death) have a life-giving (and saving) effect for us?
  6. How can the way Jesus lived shape how we are to live? Why does it matter?
  7. In what way is Jesus’ invitation to us an invitation to choose the ‘way of life’? Can we add to the gift that Jesus offers? How can we possibly receive it?

APPLY: If Jesus has opened up for us a ‘way of life’, what is one way that you can bring this invitation for life to others this Christmas?

PRAYERHeavenly Father, thank you that it’s through Jesus that the ‘old way of death’ - wrought through Adam - is overcome. Help us to accept your gift of grace, especially proclaiming it as we celebrate Christmas this year. Amen.

PRAYERGracious God, thank you that your Son became flesh—fully sharing in our humanity— in order to break the power of sin and death. Thank you that it is in Jesus we find the one who is perfectly able to sympathise with us and help us, especially in times of temptation. Please help us to see who Jesus is clearly and run to him. Amen.

When he was alone, the Twelve and the others around him asked him about the parables. 11 He told them, “The secret of the kingdom of God has been given to you. But to those on the outside everything is said in parables so that, “ ‘they may be ever seeing but never perceiving, and ever hearing but never understanding; otherwise they might turn and be forgiven!’” Then Jesus said to them, “Don’t you understand this parable? How then will you understand any parable? The farmer sows the word. Some people are like seed along the path, where the word is sown. As soon as they hear it, Satan comes and takes away the word that was sown in them. Others, like seed sown on rocky places, hear the word and at once receive it with joy. But since they have no root, they last only a short time. When trouble or persecution comes because of the word, they quickly fall away. Still others, like seed sown among thorns, hear the word; but the worries of this life, the deceitfulness of wealth and the desires for other things come in and choke the word, making it unfruitful. Others, like seed sown on good soil, hear the word, accept it, and produce a crop—some thirty, some sixty, some a hundred times what was sown.” He said to them, “Do you bring in a lamp to put it under a bowl or a bed? Instead, don’t you put it on its stand? For whatever is hidden is meant to be disclosed, and whatever is concealed is meant to be brought out into the open. If anyone has ears to hear, let them hear.” “Consider carefully what you hear,” he continued. “With the measure you use, it will be measured to you—and even more. Whoever has will be given more; whoever does not have, even what they have will be taken from them.” He also said, “This is what the kingdom of God is like. A man scatters seed on the ground. Night and day, whether he sleeps or gets up, the seed sprouts and grows, though he does not know how. All by itself the soil produces grain—first the stalk, then the head, then the full kernel in the head. As soon as the grain is ripe, he puts the sickle to it, because the harvest has come.” 'Again he said, “What shall we say the kingdom of God is like, or what parable shall we use to describe it? It is like a mustard seed, which is the smallest of all seeds on earth. Yet when planted, it grows and becomes the largest of all garden plants, with such big branches that the birds can perch in its shade.”

  6. Is the kingdom of God meant to be a secret or revealed? How can we be part of the unfolding revelation of the kingdom on our frontlines and in the world today?

READ Mark 4:24-32

  1. What does it mean to ‘consider carefully what you hear’ as mentioned in V24? Practically, how could you do this in your reading and hearing of scripture?
  2. What is the encouragement and the warning in V24-25? What is the danger of not hearing and not responding to the word?
  3. How does the kingdom grow both in the world and in our hearts? What is our role in this growth?
  4. What does the harvest in V29 mean, and when will that come?
  5. At first, the kingdom that Jesus brought had small beginnings and the type of kingdom was unexpected. What is the encouragement to both the disciples and us in V30-32?
  6. How can you on your frontline show or tell of your growth in your relationship with Jesus?

Heavenly Father, thank you that you have made yourself known to us through Jesus and through the Word. Help us to consider how we hear, that we may constantly grow in relationship with you and be part of growing your kingdom by making disciples wherever we are. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Another time Jesus went into the synagogue, and a man with a shriveled hand was there. Some of them were looking for a reason to accuse Jesus, so they watched him closely to see if he would heal him on the Sabbath. Jesus said to the man with the shriveled hand, “Stand up in front of everyone.” Then Jesus asked them, “Which is lawful on the Sabbath: to do good or to do evil, to save life or to kill?” But they remained silent. He looked around at them in anger and, deeply distressed at their stubborn hearts, said to the man, “Stretch out your hand.” He stretched it out, and his hand was completely restored. Then the Pharisees went out and began to plot with the Herodians how they might kill Jesus. Jesus withdrew with his disciples to the lake, and a large crowd from Galilee followed. When they heard about all he was doing, many people came to him from Judea, Jerusalem, Idumea, and the regions across the Jordan and around Tyre and Sidon. Because of the crowd he told his disciples to have a small boat ready for him, to keep the people from crowding him. For he had healed many, so that those with diseases were pushing forward to touch him. Whenever the impure spirits saw him, they fell down before him and cried out, “You are the Son of God.” But he gave them strict orders not to tell others about him. Jesus went up on a mountainside and called to him those he wanted, and they came to him. He appointed twelve that they might be with him and that he might send them out to preach and to have authority to drive out demons. These are the twelve he appointed: Simon (to whom he gave the name Peter), James son of Zebedee and his brother John (to them he gave the name Boanerges, which means “sons of thunder”), Andrew, Philip, Bartholomew, Matthew, Thomas, James son of Alphaeus, Thaddaeus, Simon the Zealot and Judas Iscariot, who betrayed him. Then Jesus entered a house, and again a crowd gathered, so that he and his disciples were not even able to eat. When his family heard about this, they went to take charge of him, for they said, “He is out of his mind.” And the teachers of the law who came down from Jerusalem said, “He is possessed by Beelzebul! By the prince of demons he is driving out demons.” So Jesus called them over to him and began to speak to them in parables: “How can Satan drive out Satan? If a kingdom is divided against itself, that kingdom cannot stand. If a house is divided against itself, that house cannot stand. And if Satan opposes himself and is divided, he cannot stand; his end has come. In fact, no one can enter a strong man’s house without first tying him up. Then he can plunder the strong man’s house. Truly I tell you, people can be forgiven all their sins and every slander they utter, but whoever blasphemes against the Holy Spirit will never be forgiven; they are guilty of an eternal sin.” He said this because they were saying, “He has an impure spirit.” Then Jesus’ mother and brothers arrived. Standing outside, they sent someone in to call him. A crowd was sitting around him, and they told him, “Your mother and brothers are outside looking for you.” “Who are my mother and my brothers?” he asked. Then he looked at those seated in a circle around him and said, “Here are my mother and my brothers! Whoever does God’s will is my brother and sister and mother.”

READ Mark 3:1-11

  1. What have been the claims and actions of Jesus so far in the Gospel of Mark?
  2. Who was plotting to kill Jesus? Is it strange that these two groups of people would come together?
  3. Do you find the plot to kill Jesus surprising? What had driven them to pursue such a course of action?
  4. Who had come to see Jesus after he withdraws? What’s significant about where people come from?
  5. Why do you think it was possible for people to have so many radically different ideas about who Jesus is? Do you see that diversity of ideas about Jesus on your various frontlines?

READ Mark 3:20-35

  1. What are the two theories about the identity of Jesus is in this section? Do you think these stack up?
  2. Why do you think Jesus answers these two ideas with a parable? What is a parable?
  3. What is the point of verses 24-26 of the parable? What does Jesus mean by “if a house is divided against itself, that house cannot stand”?
  4. In verses 27-28, who is the strong man in the parable? How is Jesus pointing to himself as the stronger man who will set the captives free? What have been the clues already that Jesus will defeat evil?
  5. How is Jesus the Stronger One? How will Jesus ultimately defeat evil? When will evil be destroyed?
  6. How is Jesus, through the cross, the ultimate healer?
  7. Have you every been worried about verse 28? What does it actually mean to ‘blaspheme against the Holy Spirit’? Why was Jesus speaking this word of warning to those who were present?
  8. How do you react when you hear verses 31-35? How serious is it that Jesus’ family thought that he was ‘out of his mind’? How does the inclusion of this information add to the reliability of the Gospels?
  9. What did Jesus mean by ‘whoever does God’s will is my brother and sister and mother’?
  10. How is this an incredible promise to all who follow Jesus, especially regarding his unconditional love?

APPLY: How does Jesus being the Strongest One shape the way you approach at least one particular challenge this week?

Heavenly Father, we thank you so much that Jesus did not just come simply to teach, but to defeat the powers of sin, evil, and death. We thank you that Jesus is not only the Stronger One but that he is the Strongest One! In Jesus’ name, Amen.

A few days later, when Jesus again entered Capernaum, the people heard that he had come home. They gathered in such large numbers that there was no room left, not even outside the door, and he preached the word to them. Some men came, bringing to him a paralyzed man, carried by four of them. Since they could not get him to Jesus because of the crowd, they made an opening in the roof above Jesus by digging through it and then lowered the mat the man was lying on. When Jesus saw their faith, he said to the paralyzed man, “Son, your sins are forgiven.” Now some teachers of the law were sitting there, thinking to themselves, “Why does this fellow talk like that? He’s blaspheming! Who can forgive sins but God alone?” Immediately Jesus knew in his spirit that this was what they were thinking in their hearts, and he said to them, “Why are you thinking these things? Which is easier: to say to this paralyzed man, ‘Your sins are forgiven,’ or to say, ‘Get up, take your mat and walk’? But I want you to know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins.” So he said to the man, “I tell you, get up, take your mat and go home.” He got up, took his mat and walked out in full view of them all. This amazed everyone and they praised God, saying, “We have never seen anything like this!”

CONNECT: How does Jesus’ authority shape the way that you live?

WARM-UP

  1. Is forgiveness a controversial topic in our culture today? Why or why not?
  2. Why do you think some people see forgiveness as a sign of weakness or as incompatible with justice?

READ Mark 2:1-5

  1. Why had everyone gathered at the house? What had the paralysed man and friends come to Jesus for? Do you think they would have been bewildered or confronted by what happens?
  2. Whilst the man had a need for physical healing, how was forgiveness actually an even deeper need?
  3. What’s the difference between forgiveness and ignoring sin? Why is this an important distinction?
  4. Read Micah 7:19 and Psalm 103:12. Does this understanding of forgiveness excite you?
  5. Why are we all in need of forgiveness? Do you find this easy or difficult to accept?
  6. Why do you think that some people have a great deal of trouble accepting God’s forgiveness?

READ Mark 2:6-12

  1. How is it evident in this passage that Jesus asserts the authority to forgive sins? Why is this so radical in the context of the passage? (Think about why the priests who were present were so upset with Jesus.)
  2. What is so significant about Jesus’ identification as the ‘Son of Man’? (see Daniel 7:13-14)
  3. How do you think the priests felt when Jesus responded to what was going on in their hearts?
  4. In what way did the priests recognise the significance of Jesus’ claim? What did they fail to see?
  5. How does Jesus make forgiveness possible? How did the friends demonstrate faith in Jesus?
  6. In your own words, describe what real forgiveness is and why it can never be separated from Jesus. Why is it so costly (including when we forgive others)?
  7. What type of freedom does our forgiveness give us?
  8. How can our living out of forgiveness point to Jesus and the Kingdom of God?

When he had gone a little farther, he saw James son of Zebedee and his brother John in a boat, preparing their nets. Without delay he called them, and they left their father Zebedee in the boat with the hired men and followed him. They went to Capernaum, and when the Sabbath came, Jesus went into the synagogue and began to teach. The people were amazed at his teaching, because he taught them as one who had authority, not as the teachers of the law. Just then a man in their synagogue who was possessed by an impure spirit cried out, “What do you want with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are—the Holy One of God!” “Be quiet!” said Jesus sternly. “Come out of him!” The impure spirit shook the man violently and came out of him with a shriek. The people were all so amazed that they asked each other, “What is this? A new teaching—and with authority! He even gives orders to impure spirits and they obey him.” News about him spread quickly over the whole region of Galilee.

  2. What is the ‘kingdom of God’? What does Jesus mean by saying that it has come near? How is the kingdom both now and not yet?
  3. In light of this proclamation of Jesus, what is the appropriate response of the listener or hearer of Jesus’ words? What does this look like in practise?
  4. How is this response different to just a ‘head’ belief system?

  5. If Jesus, who is the Son of God and in the closest relationship with the Father, made time for prayer, what are the implications for us and our prayer life?
  6. What is the priority for Jesus? What is the role of miracles in this?

Heavenly Father, we thank you so much that your kingdom has come in the coming of King Jesus and will come in all its fulness when he returns. Please help us to be faithful in living as part of the kingdom and faithful in showing off the kingdom benefits in our lives. Through our witness, may people on our frontlines come to repent, believe, and be part of the kingdom. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

The beginning of the good news about Jesus the Messiah, the Son of God, as it is written in Isaiah the prophet: “I will send my messenger ahead of you, who will prepare your way” — “a voice of one calling in the wilderness, ‘Prepare the way for the Lord, make straight paths for him.’ ” And so John the Baptist appeared in the wilderness, preaching a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins. The whole Judean countryside and all the people of Jerusalem went out to him. Confessing their sins, they were baptized by him in the Jordan River. John wore clothing made of camel’s hair, with a leather belt around his waist, and he ate locusts and wild honey. And this was his message: “After me comes the one more powerful than I, the straps of whose sandals I am not worthy to stoop down and untie. I baptize you with water, but he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit.” At that time Jesus came from Nazareth in Galilee and was baptized by John in the Jordan. Just as Jesus was coming up out of the water, he saw heaven being torn open and the Spirit descending on him like a dove. And a voice came from heaven: “You are my Son, whom I love; with you I am well pleased.” At once the Spirit sent him out into the wilderness, and he was in the wilderness forty days, being tempted by Satan. He was with the wild animals, and angels attended him. After John was put in prison, Jesus went into Galilee, proclaiming the good news of God. “The time has come,” he said. “The kingdom of God has come near. Repent and believe the good news!”

  1. What are the various ways in which people form an understanding of who Jesus is? What do you think is the best way to form a reliable view of who Jesus claimed to be?
  2. What is the key question at the heart of the Gospel of Mark? Why does it matter?

READ Mark 1:1-11 (Good News About Jesus)

  1. What does ‘Gospel’ mean? What is the Gospel primarily about? How is that evident in these verses?
  2. Can you identify the various titles claimed as pertaining to Jesus? What do each of them mean?
  3. How is the GOOD NEWS the culmination of a long period of waiting and anticipation?
  4. What are the ways in which these claims are confirmed in the first half of the chapter?
  5. What was John’s purpose? How is our purpose as disciples similar to that of John? (It’s also different!)
  6. If Jesus was without sin, why did he receive a baptism of repentance? How is this baptism different to the one that Christians now receive?
  7. If Jesus received a baptism he did not need and died a death that he did not deserve, how does he compare to other heroes or leaders in our world?

  1. Re-Read Verse 1-3. What is meant by making straight paths to prepare the way for the Lord?
  2. What does the testing of Jesus in the wilderness prove about who he is and the focus of his purpose?
  3. Can you think of an example of a time in which you had to make a straight path to something? What are the things that get in the way of us making a straight path to Jesus?
  4. How are we involved in helping to make straight paths to Jesus for people who do not yet know him? Can you think of some practical ways of doing that this week for one person in particular?
  5. What is ultimately the way in which we respond to who Jesus is and what he has done? What does it mean to repent and believe?
  6. Has your view of who Jesus is changed over your life time? What shaped your view?

CONNECT: How can you share one of God’s benefits with someone this week?

WARM-UP

  1. What do you think it means to be joyful?
  2. Where do people who don’t follow Jesus find their joy, or at least try to? What type of joy do they find?

READ Philippians 4:1-5

  1. What is the source of a christian’s joy? How is it possible to have this joy always in all circumstances?
  2. What is the difference between ‘having a positive spin on things’ or being optimistic and the type of joy that Paul is talking about?
  3. In what areas in your life do you find yourself distracted from or lacking this joy?
  4. How does rejoicing lead to gentleness?
  5. What would it look like for you to rejoice and be gentle on your frontlines? How could you spur these qualities on? (Note: ‘trying harder’ isn’t an answer!)

READ Philippians 4:5-9

  1. How is it possible that we can not only rejoice always but also not be anxious?
  2. What does Paul command us to do instead of being anxious?
  3. Why is it such great news that we can ‘make our requests known’ to God? Is there anything that we can’t bring to God in prayer?
  4. When worries or hard times have come in the past, what has been your reaction in the past? How could you encourage yourself or others to turn to God in prayer?
  5. How is this different to secular calming techniques such as mindfulness or meditation?
  6. What difference does being thankful make in our prayer life? What is a model or shape of prayer that may be helpful in encouraging this?
  7. What is the peace of God? Can you recall a time in your life when you have experienced this peace?
  8. Why do you think modern culture is interested in darker themes in TV shows, movies, or books?
  9. How are we to be different to this? What are we to be interested in?
  10. In your week, how could you shape your focus to be on such virtues as listed in V8? In who do we see all these modelled and perfectly lived out?

CONNECT: How could you tell someone about your assurance of a place with Jesus for eternity?

WARM-UP Question

  1. What do you think are the common ways that people think about eternal life?
  2. How does this compare with Jesus’ promise to raise us up?

READ John 6:25-27

  1. What miracle had Jesus just performed prior to this encounter? Why would have this been such a significant sign for those who lived from day-to-day?
  2. As people track Jesus down, what does Jesus identify as their motivation for finding him? What had they missed about Jesus that all of the signs were pointing to?
  3. Do you think it’s possible to ever come to Jesus with a materialistic agenda? What are some of the mixed motives that you can come to Jesus with from time-to-time?
  4. Whilst bread was an important staple of people’s diet to survive, what is it that Jesus really longs for the people to hunger for? What are the types of things that you can sometimes seek satisfaction instead of which ultimately don’t last?
  5. Scanning through verses 25-40, can you identify all of the ways that Jesus points to his gift being the gift that ultimately lasts and fully satisfies?
  6. What is the food that ‘endures for eternal life’ that Jesus speaks about? How is it only in Jesus that we can be truly satisfied, both now and for eternity?

READ John 6:28-40

  1. What do the people think they need to do in order to receive the bread of which Jesus speaks? As people approach God today, do you think we can ever fall into this trap as well?
  2. What was the reference to the manna all about? What is different about the bread Jesus is now speaking of? How is Jesus both the giver and the gift?
  3. Throughout these verses, can you spot all of the ways in which Jesus claims that this true bread is only found in him? What is it about who Jesus is and what he has done that makes this possible?
  4. If the true bread is only found in him, what do you need to do to receive it? Who can receive it?
  5. What does it mean to you to know that Jesus will not drive away or lose any of those given to him?
  6. What is Jesus’ ultimate promise for those who are sent to him and come to him? What type of resurrection is Jesus speaking about (consider the precedent of his own resurrection).
  7. Throughout this series, has there been one particular promise that has stood out to you at this time?

Heavenly Father, we thank you so much that we can be confident about forever with you because you have sent Jesus into the world. Please help us not to chase things that do not last and fail to satisfy, but that we may instead long and hunger for Jesus more and more. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

PRAYER

Lord God, how we thank you that there is a dwelling place for us and that you will come back and take us to be with you. Help us to not forget this nor take it for granted. In the face of suffering and death, keep us in this knowledge of your grace shown to us in Christ Jesus. Please calm our hearts when troubled, make our faith firm when fumbling, and help us to keep our eyes on Jesus. In his name we pray, Amen.

  4. In what ways are the rewards of God both now and not yet? What are some of the ways in which you have recognised the blessings of God as you seek to serve him faithfully (and humbly!)?

  1. How have you felt during this time of physical separation and partial closure of many aspects of community? Has there been any point in which you felt alone?
  2. Can you think of another time in which you felt alone? When was it? Did anything bring you comfort?

READ John 16:1-5a

  1. What did Jesus tell the disciples would happen to them?
  2. Why did Jesus tell the disciples what would happen to them?
  3. How is the promise to send the Holy Spirit connected what Jesus says here? (see John 15:26-27)
  4. How can followers of Jesus be tempted to act when they experience persecution and hardship? How do you want to react when you undergo difficult times?
  5. Have you been ‘persecuted’ for you faith? Share your experiences with the group.
  6. What has helped you - particularly at this time - to keep connected to Jesus? What do you think would be helpful to pursue more?

READ John 16:5b-15

  1. Why must Jesus return to the Father, and how will this benefit the disciples (and us!)?
  2. What is the primary ministry of the Spirit to the world (non-believers)? Is this still relevant today?
  3. In what three areas does Spirit convict the world? How is the world wrong about these three areas?
  4. How do believers participate in this ministry of conviction? Think about the example of Acts 2.
  5. Even though this is not the focus of this passage, how does the Spirit continue to convict disciples of Jesus today?
  6. Why can’t the disciples bear to hear all that Jesus had to tell them? Why was it so troubling to them?
  7. What is the ministry of the Spirit to believers today?
  8. What will the Spirit teach and to whom will the Spirit point? Why is this significant?

PRAYER

Heavenly Father, thank you that you sent the Spirit to help us stay faithful to Jesus even in times of hardship, to convict us of sin and our need for salvation in Jesus, and to teach us all truth and continually point us to our Lord. Help us to grow in our understanding of your truth, and help us to demonstrate this truth in our lives that we might share that truth in word and deed. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

I must go on boasting. Although there is nothing to be gained, I will go on to visions and revelations from the Lord. I know a man in Christ who fourteen years ago was caught up to the third heaven. Whether it was in the body or out of the body I do not know—God knows. And I know that this man—whether in the body or apart from the body I do not know, but God knows— was caught up to paradise and heard inexpressible things, things that no one is permitted to tell. I will boast about a man like that, but I will not boast about myself, except about my weaknesses. Even if I should choose to boast, I would not be a fool, because I would be speaking the truth. But I refrain, so no one will think more of me than is warranted by what I do or say, or because of these surpassingly great revelations. Therefore, in order to keep me from becoming conceited, I was given a thorn in my flesh, a messenger of Satan, to torment me. Three times I pleaded with the Lord to take it away from me. But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may rest on me. That is why, for Christ’s sake, I delight in weaknesses, in insults, in hardships, in persecutions, in difficulties. For when I am weak, then I am strong.

CONNECT: This week, try to stop and go to Jesus to receive the rest he offers. Try also to share this good news of rest with someone else.

WARM-UP Question

  1. What is your reaction when you hear someone boasting in themselves or about their achievements? Why do you think you react that way?
  2. How do you react when people show weakness or vulnerabilities?

READ 2 Corinthians 11:30-12:5

  1. What is the context of this passage? What was Paul trying to achieve by boasting in these ways?
  2. How is Paul’s boast different to what we would usually boast in? Why would have this been so surprising for the Corinthians?
  3. In boasting about these things, what does this tell us about the source of Paul’s strength?
  4. In verses 2 to 3, why does Paul refer to himself in the third person? Paul could have used this vision to show how superior he is, why doesn’t he?
  5. In what ways can we try and boast in and draw strength from ourselves? Why is this ultimately futile? What would this show about the condition of our heart?

READ 2 Corinthians 12:6-10

  1. Why shouldn’t we find our strength the praise of others? What’s the difference between working for the praise of others and receiving encouragement from others?
  2. How could we encourage one another in such a way that keeps our eyes on Jesus and not ourselves?
  3. Why was Paul given a thorn in his flesh? While we aren’t told what the thorn actually was, what was the nature of this affliction?
  4. How did Paul react to this? What was the response of the Lord to his request?
  5. When we undergo pain and suffering, what should be our response? Does God ever promise to take these things away if we ask?
  6. When these things happen, is it bad to seek medical attention or outside council? Why not?
  7. What is the nature of God’s grace as mentioned in V9? How is it sufficient for us? How do we receive it?
  8. What’s the difference between boasting in weaknesses and actively searching them out? Where do we find our ultimate source of strength? How do we receive it?

APPLY: In what ways can you see God’s strength at work through your weaknesses?

PRAYER

Heavenly Father, thank you that you are the ultimate source of strength. Help us in our weaknesses to look to you for strength and to recognise the sufficiency of your grace in every aspect of our lives. Keep us from our pride, from seeking strength from the approval of others, and guide us in your ways, that we may be strengthened to serve you in all that we do. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

  1. What does Jesus mean by saying that these things have been ‘hidden’ from the wise and the learned?
  2. Who were some of the ‘wise and learned’ of Jesus’ time who thought they had everything figured out when it came to God? Did that help them to see Jesus more clearly? Why or why not?
  3. Why is it such great news that knowing God is not based on how ‘clever’ we are?
  4. How can knowledge both lead us to and away from God? Can you think of some famous examples?
  5. How extraordinary is the extent of the intimacy that Jesus claims with the Father? How close are they?
  6. What causes you particularly to feel weary and burdened? Anything particular of late?
  7. Who does Jesus offer rest to? How does it make you feel to know that Jesus has invited you to receive his rest? How does knowing who Jesus is give us confidence that he can fulfil this staggering promise?
  8. How have you known Jesus’ rest in your life to be true? Have there been particular times?
  9. What aspects of your life right now would you love to be transformed by the rest that Jesus offers?
  10. Have you gone to Jesus recently to receive his rest? If so, what was that like? If not, how might you go to him this coming week?

READ Matthew 11:29-30

  1. Is the rest that Jesus offers just a form of inactivity? What is the nature of the rest that Jesus offers?
  2. What does Jesus mean by ‘taking up his yoke’? (Think about the original context both agriculturally and also with regard to the Law) How is being yoked to Jesus actually a form of freedom?
  3. What have you been learning from Jesus over the last two months?
  4. In a weary and worried world, how is Jesus’ promise such great news?
    Who might you share this good news with this week?

Loving Lord, thank you so much for your promise that we can find rest in you. Indeed, the water I give them will become in them a spring of water welling up to eternal life.” The woman said to him, “Sir, give me this water so that I won’t get thirsty and have to keep coming here to draw water.” He told her, “Go, call your husband and come back.” “I have no husband,” she replied. Jesus said to her, “You are right when you say you have no husband. The fact is, you have had five husbands, and the man you now have is not your husband. What you have just said is quite true.” “Sir,” the woman said, “I can see that you are a prophet. Our ancestors worshiped on this mountain, but you Jews claim that the place where we must worship is in Jerusalem.” “Woman,” Jesus replied, “believe me, a time is coming when you will worship the Father neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem.

  4. Describe what the ‘gift of God’ is as mentioned in verse 10. What does this gift satisfy?
  5. How does knowing who Jesus is give us satisfaction? Are we ever at risk of taking Jesus for granted? What patterns in your life can you recognise that could cause you to take your eyes off Jesus?

  1. What does the woman’s response indicate about her understanding of Jesus’ words? In what ways is Jesus greater than Jacob?
  2. What is the problem with earthly water? How is the water that Jesus gives us different?
  3. What do we have to do to receive this water? How long does this water last?
  4. How does this water give us satisfaction? What does this water ultimately give us?
  5. Describe what it means to worship in ‘Spirit and in truth’? Do we have to be in the physical building at church to worship Jesus?
  6. In what ways does knowing who Jesus is help us worship him? What does the act of worshipping cause us to do?
  7. How could you tell a friend or family member about the satisfaction you find in Jesus?

PRAYER

Heavenly Father, thank you for the hope and the promise of living water, that all we need to do is ask and we will receive new life. Thank you for the satisfaction that is found in being in relationship with you. We are sorry for the times when we take this for granted and try and find satisfaction in worldly things. Help us to continue to keep our eyes fixed on you and trusting in the sure promise that you will satisfy not just now here on earth but for all eternity. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
