Today's 30A Show is a recreation of the amazing Seacoast Collegiate High School commencement speech by Mike Ragsdale. We heard so much about it, that we made him redo it, just for us...so here it is.

About Seacoast Collegiate High School:

Seacoast Collegiate High School strives to enhance and promote student advancement by providing a scholastic environment that sustains academic excellence, prepares students for post-secondary opportunities, assists students/parents in setting and meeting student goals, and creates a learning context that enables students to discover their abilities, interests, learning styles, and ways that they can make contributions to society.

In order for our future leaders to be successful in the world marketplace, they must be global and creative thinkers, master communicators, and innovative problem solvers. Seacoast Collegiate High School is a small supportive collegiate environment that fosters a climate of intellectual growth and creativity through the arts, science, technology, engineering, math, and computer science.

The collegiate program is for high school students who desire to undertake college-level courses to earn their high school diploma and associate degree. Students begin the program in ninth and tenth grades with a focus on reading and writing across the content areas, study skills, and core academics.

Students begin their college program of study at Northwest Florida State College in eleventh grade. In combination with their college classes, juniors and seniors intern with mentors in their field of study; providing practical experience and direction as they move into bachelor and graduate level degrees.

Seacoast Collegiate High School’s mission is to help each student develop and grow healthy strengths, skills, and learned abilities while leading students toward the ultimate goal of learning how to learn. Our kids will learn how they function in the context of required and elective structure, how to prepare for and master high-stakes testing, how to prepare for college admissions, and how to position themselves for the job market.

October is breast cancer awareness month. This episode of the 30A Show features Chelsea Berler, one of our first interviews on 30A Radio. She recently passed away from stage 4 breast cancer over the summer, but set up a wonderful charity The Foye Belle Foundation, which sends Blue Bags full of chemo necessities to cancer patients. We hear excerpts from our first interview with Chelsea, and then we speak with Mark Berler about Chelsea's foundation, and how you can help. Chelsea was truly a 30A local, and will be missed. Hear how she got from North Dakota to the beach on today's show. www.foyebelle.org

Please consider making a single or recurring donation here: https://foyebelle.org/donate/

There are a lot of great foundations that serve a bigger purpose of raising money for research and those organizations are so incredibly needed. And sure, there are foundations that support the individual on some level. But is there a place you can go to gift someone a free bag of goodies that will support them in their fight? To remind them they’re not alone?

That’s where the Blue Bag concept comes into play.

During Chelsea’s cancer journey, she was gifted several Blue Bags. The concept is really neat. Whenever you’re feeling blue you pull out your blue bag, grab an item, unwrap it, and enjoy with hopes that it will make you feel a little less blue.

We want this Blue Bag movement to bring a smile to someone battling breast cancer, even if it’s just for a moment of feeling less blue. The items in a Blue Bag may make a person laugh, be helpful during their cancer journey, or maybe it will be something that will move them forever.

Please take a moment to share this podcast.

Fact: Sharks are found in every ocean on earth. It's no suprise that the Gulf of Mexico has them too. It's Shark Week, so we touch based with our friend Joe Moore, a local marine biologist based out of Grayton Beach, FL to discuss our shark population in our area. Joe is also CEO of Appleseed Expeditions, an educational service learning company that offers global tours for students and teachers. When should you be more cautious swimming in the gulf or bay? What kind of sharks are in the Northwest Florida area? Where are they seen more often? Are there signs you should look for that could mean a shark is nearby? We go over all that, and some other things you should be far more concerned about than shark encounters when enjoying a day at the beach. Recently, Seaside co-founders Robert & Daryl Davis, VP and general manager Pam Avera, Seaside staff, merchants and homeowners, architects, community members and many friends of Seaside gathered to commemorate the past 35 years of the vibrant community and to help celebrate its success. They met because in these last 35 years, Seaside has become important to each one of them and being connected has impacted them in some way. Along with Robert & Daryl, it’s the people who live, work and visit Seaside that helped to give it life—now several generations who caught Robert & Daryl’s vision and want to continue the legacy. It’s hard to imagine that Seaside started as just a dream that began with Robert’s grandfather, J.R. Smolian. But Robert caught the magic & shared his grandfather’s dream & in 1981 Seaside was born. Since then, each “Seasider” has played an important role with his or her contribution, helping establish Seaside’s personality and make it what it is today.

On the day of the ceremony, attendees were invited to share their experiences by coming to the microphone and sharing a fond memory or story. Seaside’s co-founder, Robert Davis, spoke and led all in a commemorative champagne toast. In order of appearance:

What an honor to get this session at the 2017 30A Songwriter Festival main stage at Grand Boulevard. For fifty years, Kent DuChaine has traveled around the globe with "Leadbessie," his duct-taped 1934 National Steel Guitar. Over the decades, DuChaine has shared the stage with such music icons as Muddy Waters, Howlin' Wolf, John Lee Hooker, Big Mama Thornton, Koko Taylor, B.B. King, Albert and Freddie King, Willie Dixon, Bukka White, Robert JR Lockwood, Mississippi Fred McDowell, Furry Lewis and Son House. In 1989, DuChaine teamed up with Johnny Shines, a man who spent more than three years on-the-road with the mythical Robert Johnson in the 1930s. Together, DuChaine and Shines recorded “Back to the Country,” which won the coveted WC Handy Award for "Best Country Blues Album." They were invited by the Smithsonian Institute to perform at the 25th Annual Festival of American Folklife, resulting in the Grammy-nominated, “Roots of Rhythm & Blues: A Tribute to the Robert Johnson Era.” www.kentduchaine.com

Packed house witnessed one of New Orleans great bands right here on 30A Dec. 29th, 2016. The New Orleans Suspects played to a packed house at The Hub 30A. Great for music for family and friends. Here is the entire set live from The Hub 30A.

Band Members:

Willie Green (Neville Brothers)/Jake Eckert (Dirty Dozen)/Jeff Watkins (James Brown Band)/C.R. Gruver (Outformation)/Charlie Wooton (Royal Southern Brotherhood).

Bio:

Start with members of three of the top bands to come out of New Orleans, The Neville Brothers, The Radiators, and The Dirty Dozen - then add a saxophonist who was James Brown's horn director for 12 years, and a keyboard player with extraordinary talent, and you have The New Orleans Suspects. With well over a century of touring experience combined, this is a real band with genuine musicianship and more seasoning than any of New Orleans' greatest dishes. They have been making an enormous impact with their live performances across the country, and have established themselves as one of the brightest new lights out of the Crescent City. Funky drumbeats, greasy wailing saxophones, razor-sharp guitar playing, rollicking piano and swampy organ swells, strutting bass lines and tight vocal harmonies make this band stand above the rest. Just as the wind shifts over the Mississippi River, so does the music the band creates - strains of Dr John and the Nevilles, The Meters and Allan Toussaint, brass bands and piano legends, hot nights and sweat-soaked streets, all combine in an original way to create what is now known as The New Orleans Suspects.

Run Across Congo

In May 2015, a 7-marathon, 7-day expedition along the shores of Lake Kivu in the eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo will raise awareness and funds for the inspiring female coffee farmers, farming families and cooperatives working toward gender equality in the region.

An all-women team of runners will participate in the first ever Run Across Congo, supporting and celebrating the resurgence of the Kivu Region through empowering women in farming communities. Runners will traverse the Great Lakes region of Africa for 300km and include stops in farming communities with whom organizing partners, On The Ground and Twin, have existing relationships, including coffee cooperatives and local officials.

Awareness and funds raised from Run Across Congo will have several long-term impacts, including gender equality and women’s empowerment programs, creating access to knowledge, land and income beyond coffee. Funds will be used to empower and educate female farmers to run their own lives and businesses and create a brighter future for coffee communities affected by civil war in eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo.
