Dr Karl is best known here in Australia for his ability to make science not only accessible, but engaging and fascinating, He’s been a staple in our media landscape from his early days on Triple J, to his multiple podcasts, books, and extensive media presence - a true science story-teller. With the launch of his memoir ‘A Periodic Tale’ we explore in this conversation his early years as the only child of Holocaust survives who fled to Australia in 1950. He then described undertaking a convoluted cacophony of a career. From working as a physicist in a steelworks, to racing modified rally cars, his drug-crazed hippie years in Papau New Guinea, to training as a medical Dr off the back of an off-handed comment that Dr Fred Hollows said to him once. After he applied to be a NASA astronaut in the 1980s and 'failed', he ended up live broadcasting the first space shuttle launch on Triple J instead. Unexpectedly, that blasted off his media career, and from there it was a stratospheric rise from radio to TV, books, newspapers, speaking, podcasts and the internet. You will hear from this conversation a little about how Dr Karl’s brain works - he has an insatiable curiosity that continues to drive pure wonder and awe. Actually he teaches us all that you don’t have to know the answers, as long as you continue to ask questions. This conversation is one worth holding onto, and allowing it to ignite your own curiosity. And I can thoroughly recommend Dr Karl’s memoir ‘A Periodic Tale’ to absorb more of his wisdom and experiences.

All of us can fall into trying to make sense of the unknown, drawn towards an insight, a theory or a story that seems just far-fetched enough to be true. But what makes rational people believe irrational things? As someone who studies behavioural scientists today’s guest is akin to chatting with an intellectual hero. This episode comes with a content warning. This conversation with Chanel Contos contains descriptions of sexual violence, assault and we talk about sexual acts. Parts of this conversation may be distressing for some listeners. The statistics Chanel shares are confronting which is why she has made it her mission to drive a conversation and impact policy change in this country about consent education. We can’t talk about consent without talking about what consent is not. I’m really proud of this conversation and believe it’s important to sit in the uncomfortable and the hard. But please be aware that discretion is advised before you choose to listen. And if this episode brings up anything for you please reach out to organisations like LifeLife on 13 11 14Chanel Contos founded Teach Us Consent, a campaign that mandated consent education in Australia. In order to achieve this, she worked closely with politicians from across the political spectrum, including prime ministers.Chanel was the recipient of the Australian Human Rights Commission Young People’s Medal in 2021, and in 2023 she was named NSW Young Woman of the Year for her persistent efforts towards eradicating rape culture. Chanel has also been presented with the prestigious Diana Award for her humanitarian work, and in 2022 she was listed as one of the BBC’s 100 inspiring and influential women worldwide. Chanel has a Masters in Education, Gender and International Development from University College London and was recently appointed by Julia Gillard to chair the Global Institute for Women’s Leadership’s. She shares her message in her latest book ‘Consent Laid Bare’ - riding the gap between policy makers and the experiences of young people. Calling for greater awareness, education and at its core - empathy - in sharing what is healthy intimacy. Consent is complex - particularly in a society where messages are mixed at best, toxic at worst. Chanel’s book is a battle cry from a generation no longer prepared to stay silent. Falling into advertising photography was a happy accident according to today’s guest - a career that has incredible high’s but hasn’t always been easy.

John Tsiavis has always had creativity in his world and found his flair at the intersection of advertising, photography, and directing.

His break came at the age of 20 after producer Jane Scott contacted RMIT looking for someone to shoot stills for the Australian feature film Head On.

He went on to work in the entertainment industry creating images for film such as Chopper (for anyone that can recall that image of Eric Bana that is John’s work), Ned Kelly and he also worked on television series including The Secret Life of Us and Summer Heights High.

His work is fine art meeting commerciality - and it’s by holding onto a philosophy of shooting for ‘him’ that his style was created. Along the way John has learnt the value of treating people well; connection is a key theme.

Within this conversation John talks about some of the images that have stretched him - including a striking portrait of actor Jackie Weaver. You’ll see these over on instagram @alihill or by following the links in the show notes to John’s work.

John also shares his latest endeavour directing a series called 'A QUIET ROAR' - showcasing the stories and campaigns of young activists advocating for social, political, and economic change. A project that’s impacting him deeply.

This is a personal, real and insight conversation about creativity, art, and the importance of deep connection with John Tsiavis.

Linda Marigliano is an Australian television and radio presenter, podcaster, musician and DJ, best known for her work on FBi Radio and Triple J.

Linda has built a career out of performing for other people. In her day-job as an on-air presenter or in her family home, she contorted herself into 'the cool girl' or 'the good girl'.

Exploring how to wrestle with long-distance love and learning more about herself in her key relationships (including with her Mum) has become the pursuit of Linda’s expressions - her podcast Tough Love is a podcast production masterpiece, and her book Love Language explore these theme’s.

We chat about vocabulary of love in all forms - intimate partners, families, and friendships. The importance of holding expectations loosely - learning how to express what we want and the ways we like to be loved - and the importance of weaving the threads of creativity and true presence with others to continue to grow.

I couldn’t have loved this conversation any more. Personal, practical, insightful and relevant for all who dance with love, soak up this conversation with Linda Marigliano.

As she repeatedly over-committed and sought approval in all its guises, she started to ask herself: Why am I like this? Combing through her complex relationship with her mother, the sense of duty within her extended Italian and Chinese-Malaysian families, and the twisting turns of both her career path and her love life, she noticed a pattern emerging. Her love language had warped into acts of service that pleased everyone but herself, without boundaries or exceptions. And she'd lost the ability to translate the vocabulary of love being spoken all around her.

Love Language is Linda's determined reclamation of her identity; a fiercely relatable and viscerally honest account of what it means to love and be loved.

‘An adventure is a journey with an unknown outcome’. Which begs the question, what is our relationship like with the unknown? What does it take to step out into an adventure and let go of the outcome? In this episode I chat once again with the incredible endurance athlete and beautiful friend Samantha Gash. I first chatted with Sam in Episode 105 of this podcast - in that convo we dived more into her background and drive towards adventures - so definitely check that out. In this episode we dive into Sam’s latest adventure - hiking across the Nepal (yep Sam loves to find a country and adventure across it). Sam shares some of the insights she is discovering as she starts to consolidate and reflect on this achievement. We talk about putting ourselves in the way of challenges and exploring resilience. And we dive into ‘Her Trails’ which is a female adventure community which Sam & Bec Wilcox started during the pandemic. One of the keys to facing challenges and the unknown are the deep relationships we create and invest in along the way. At her heart Sam is a gatherer of people. This story feels a world away from my world - there were multiple times in this conversation I had to remind myself that the stories that Zarifa were sharing are happening now, in this time - not a time before. Zarifa grew up in Afghanistan and when she was three the Taliban banned girls from school and her parents began her education in secret. She went on to become the youngest female Mayor in Afghanistan and the riots, and protests and assassination attempts she endured are mind-baffling stories. Her father was killed by Taliban and this is something that still drives her today. Zarifa shares with me the dreams you had growing up, where her drive and tenacity come from, and why she’s driven to ensure women in Afghanistan receive an education. Zarifa’s story has recently been released as a Netflix documentary - IN HER HANDS - which I highly recommend watching - especially after hearing her story. Take the time to absorb and listen to the stories, sheer drive, and determination that is Zarifa Ghafari.

Behind the stories we’re drawn to are the story-tellers who create them. The people who see (and sell) the intangible, who captivate our imagination, and make us gasp for breath, shed a tear, laugh out loud and want to share this experience with others. My guests on this episode are extraordinary story-finders, story-sharers, and story-tellers. I was captivated by not only how they bring the TV series and movies they produce to life, but how they work together, lead their company, and honour themselves, each other, their instincts and their work. Angie Fielder and Polly Staniford founded the award-winning production company Aquarius Films, which has built a reputation for bold, female-led projects, diversity both on and off the screen and intelligent, progressive, and inspiring stories. Aquarius produces high-quality films and television series for global audiences that are commercially successful and critically acclaimed.  Film credits include the Academy Award® and Golden Globe nominated Lion, produced in association with See-Saw Films, and starring Dev Patel, Nicole Kidman and Rooney Mara; Berlin Syndrome, Dirt Music, and Wish You Were Here, starring Joel Edgerton and Teresa Palmer, which premiered at Sundance and won two Australian Academy of Cinema and TV (AACTA) Awards, including Best Screenplay, and five Film Critics Circle Awards, including Best Film. And that’s just the tip of the ice-berg of what Angie and Polly have created.
We chat about the process of producing - what it is and the key role they play in bringing stories to our screens. We have a brilliant conversation about how they navigate uncertainty; and they both shared how they protect the creative energy amongst the busyness of life. There’s something magical, engaging and grounded about this conversation. Enjoy the wisdom and insight from Angie Fielder and Polly Staniford.

Catherine Velisha is the director of one of the country's biggest horticulture operations Velisha Farms. It won’t take long for you to hear from this conversation that she’s a real go-getter. Having faced severe discrimination throughout her career as a strong female in a male dominated industry, she has smashed through the glass ceiling to build a $40 million company. Now she is rolling out school programmes both locally and nationally to get more females interested in having a career in horticulture - in fact she nearly convinces me to sign up. Because when you think about it - after air and water - fruit and vegetables are the next most important thing in our lives. We talk quite a bit about the tension between farming and consumer expectations - such as seasonal fruit, shape of fruit. Catherine believes that a broader education and conversation between farmers and consumers is required for truly sustainable practices. Catherine is smashing the perception that farming is a man's world. Women were only legally recognised as farmers in Australia in the 1990s - prior they were only known as a farmers wife. 25 years later, we are still feeling these repercussions yet Catherine is paving the way for females to get into these roles and showing them that they can be leaders and succeed in it.Soak up the tenacity that is Catherine Velisha.https://www.velishafarms.com/Host: @alihill

Sally Douglas and Imogen Carn are the creators and co-hosts of Good Mourning, a podcast and online support community on a mission to normalise talking about grief, through wholehearted conversations with honesty and humour.

When it comes to medical drama’s we’ll often think about Grey’s Anatomy, ER or even House. What’s missing from these drama’s is the perspective of the female Doctor and the truth behind a medical system that truly needs an overhaul.

Dr Neela Janakiramanan is a reconstructive plastic surgeon with expertise in complex hand and wrist surgery. She is a seasoned public speaker and advocate on issues including health equity, gender equity and diversity, and inclusion.

Neela is a regular contributor to Women’s Agenda, and has also written for The Age, Sydney Morning Herald, The Saturday Paper, and often appears on ABC’s The Drum.

Outside of seeing patients, Dr Neela has turned her hand to fiction writing. Her latest book, The Registrar offers a rare insight into the world of a surgeon-in- the-making from one who has survived it. Dedicated and ambitious, Emma Swann is about to start a gruelling year as a surgical registrar at the prestigious Mount teaching hospital.

Emma quickly experiences escalating stress as a registrar. It’s an arduous, unremitting slog of twenty-hour days, punishing schedules, life and death decisions – and very little assistance, instruction or support from her superiors, who waste no time pointing out just how superior they are. Amidst a background culture of humiliation and bullying, being a woman just makes things worse: misogyny is rife and Emma is subjected to other, more insidious, kinds of male attention.

This gripping novel goes behind the headlines to reveal the human experience of being both a doctor and patient in a medical system at breaking point.

Occasionally there are conversations that captivate you because of the unique way that an individual has faced a challenge and the choices they’ve made to change the dynamic.

This conversation was one of those.

Ben Bravery is on a mission to open up a conversation. A conversation between patients and doctors, between those experiencing illness and the system that has been set up to care for the ill - but sometimes leaves them feeling lost and vulnerable.

Originally a zoologist and science communicator, at the age of twenty-eight, with his Beijing-based science communications business doing well and a new relationship blossoming, Ben woke from a colonoscopy to be told he had stage 3 colorectal cancer.

What’s most fascinating about this conversation is not the cancer diagnosis, but what Ben’s scientific way of viewing the world lead him to do next.

In 2018 Ben became a doctor and is committed to advocating for change in Australia's healthcare system.

What he didn't expect was how being a patient, and a young one at that, would make him feel. During eighteen long months of treatment, including aggressive chemotherapy, Ben felt scared, overwhelmed, sometimes invisible and often alone.

Now, driven by his experience on both sides of the healthcare system, this patient-turned-doctor gives a no-holds-barred account of how he overcame the trauma of his illness to study medicine and shares what he believes student doctors, doctors, patients and their families need to do to ensure that the medical system puts the patient at the very heart of healthcare every day.

Enjoy this conversation with the patient doctor - Ben Bravery.

Indira Naidoo is one of Australia's most popular broadcasters and authors. Spending time with her for this conversation was an absolute highlight for me.

During her thirty-year award-winning journalistic career, she has hosted and reported for some of the country's most distinguished news and current affair programs, including the ABC TV's Late Edition and SBS TV's World News, and she is currently the host of ABC Radio's Weekend Nightlife.

A few months ago I was shopping in Kmart and saw this book on the shelves ‘The Space Between The Stars’. It’s a book that Kate Ceberano calls ‘Life-changing’ and David Wenham says ‘A tender, touching, and at times bloody funny meditation on life. And death. And how to live’.

Indira’s world was shattered a few years ago when her younger sister died suddenly. Grappling with heartbreak an unnoticed universe of infinite beauty wove through Indira’s grief and lead to her exploring how nature can heal. From star-gazing to tracking ants to cloud-watching to jumping in puddles - Indira invites us in.

This conversation was filled with delight as we navigate the world of heart-ache and grief.

Like watching the subtle movement of the trees in the wind, and the moving of the clouds, I encourage you to sit and soak up this extraordinary conversation with Indira Naidoo.

I’m not sure whether you’ve ever tried Improv before. But today’s guest shares what are probably some of life’s greatest lessons she learnt from the improv stage - say yes, figure it out along the way, and the art of working with others - all in the name of chasing the laughs.

I’m Ali Hill and welcome to Stand Out Life a podcast dedicated to living boldly amongst the busyness.

Comedian Cal Wilson came across the Tasman from Christchurch in 2003 and has gone on to become one of our most popular comedians.

Her work has seen her on our fav TV shows such as Spicks and Specks, Good News Week, Thank God You’re Here, and more recently Would I Lie To You? Have You Been Paying Attention? and Hughesy We Have a Problem.

Despite an aversion to the great outdoors, Cal bravely joined the cast of I’m A Celebrity,,,Get Me Out Of Here! in 2022 which saw her take on all the usual hair-raising challenges and biblical amount of bugs the series has to offer. Unprecedented times called for unprecedented adventures and at the very least some good material.

A gifted storyteller & writer, Cal was invited to join the writing team for the 2022 BAFTA Awards ceremony

Cal continues her national touring and is returning for her 8th year as the Melbourne live show host of the worldwide smash-hit storytelling podcast The Moth.

You can see Cal perform her brand new show I’ve Gone To A Lot Of Trouble at the Melbourne Comedy Festival in 2022, and then taking this show on the road to Brisbane.

Filled with insights around kindness, generosity, saying yes this is a conversation you’ll enjoy. Soak up the wisdom - because you know she went to a lot of trouble - Cal Wilson.

Back in 2018 on Episode 37 of this podcast I had the delight of sitting down with Lise Carlaw and Sarah Wills - the media duo known as Those Two Girls.
A lot has happened since then.

Their extraordinary friendship and chemistry landed the pair local and national radio shows with the HIT Network. Walking the line between smart and irreverent, they’ve interviewed household names, from formidable politicians to global celebrities, in front of audiences of thousands. In 2020, the year Lise and Sarah turned forty, they launched the podcast equivalent of a little black book for the middle years – FORTY. Four seasons in, and following much success, FORTY celebrates the life lessons and stories of popular and everyday women in their fifth decade. Past guests include Liane Moriarty, Sarah Wilson, Sophie Monk, Mia Freedman, Meshel Laurie, and Leah Purcell.

The real-life friends are on-air and on-stage presenters, sought-after MCs, and guest speakers. They have held the mics on stage with the likes of Sarah Jessica Parker, Zoe Foster Blake, the Hon. Julie Bishop, Leigh Sales, and Urzila Carlson. In 2021 they hosted the launch of Celeste Barber’s Bras N Things collection.

In 2022, and after more than a year in the making they published their first book, ‘Forty Favours the Brave’ with Echo Publishing.

In this conversation we dive into some of the lessons they’ve learnt from this immersion into the middle years. Everything from why Lise will never go camping again so what it is about cemeteries that Sarah loves.

This is an immersive exploration and celebration of Forty - and the launch of their book Forty Favours the Brave (you’ll want to grab a copy for you and one for all your friends after you hear this episode) - soak up the sheer delight that is Lise and Sarah.

Today’s guest has trod a journey - a path many of us fear deeply. In April 2018 Ella Ward was - as she says - ‘hit with the cancer stick’. Apart from being rather frightening it also encouraged a foray into oversharing on Instagram and writing.

But it’s possible Ella was always destined down the writers path coming from a family of story tellers. In her first published book Ella Ward weaves together 27 letters to her daughter - actually it’s the title too - ’27 Letters to My Daughter’.

Knitted together across these letters are generations of words and experiences from her great grandparents, grandparents, mother, and her own stories offered as treasures for the heart of her daughter. Treasures for us all.

I had the chance to skim the book before Ella and I connected and since this chat I’ve devoured ever word, laughed and cried and soaked up all 188 life lessons. This is a book you’ll want to read, reread and gift generously.

Ella has worked in advertising for twenty years, for agencies in London and Melbourne. Most recently she headed up Client Service for Saatchi & Saatchi. And she bloody loves the world of advertising.

She has one husband and one child, and a number of ongoing existential crises.

Pause whatever else you are doing and dive into this conversation with the whip-smart and utterly delightful Ella Ward

Thanks for joining us again after what’s been the longest break we’ve had since the podcast launched in 2016.

It’s been a sabbatical of sorts. I was able to take three months off from everything at the end of last year - which after 15 years in business was a strange, important and timely space to have.

I’m truly grateful for the opportunity and recognise the privilege that comes with me being able to take that break.

In the background this year we’ve been crafting exceptional connections with extraordinary guests for the podcast.

One of the things I value highly in diversity in thinking, industries and perspectives and the team and I are endeavouring to connect with people that you’ll both know their names and also people that maybe you don’t.

Everyone has a story to share and this platform helps to provide a small slice of those stories.

Thank you to you for your listenership - for your interest and for your support. It’s really my goal to give you massive value and to have your thinking stretched and ideas for what life could be for you expanded.

In order to celebrate our return in 2022 (because April is the new January - trust me) we’ll be putting out two episodes per week for the first few weeks.
And these episode are all amazing (I might be slightly biased but trust me). You’ll reconnect with Lise and Sarah or Those Two Girls, I speak with the amazing comedian Cal Wilson and the first episode for this year is with someone who’s book recently left me gasping as it’s beauty, laughing at it’s wit, and crying at it’s depth of humanity.

Ella Wards book ’27 Letters to My Daughter’ is beautiful and you don’t want to miss this first episode.

Thanks again for your hearts, minds, kindness and support. Here’s to 2022 - the year that’s still filled with mess, imperfection and uncertainty - also having moments of clarity, reconnection to what matters and a few belly laughs along the way.

Because to me that’s truly a Stand Out Life.

Occasionally a book comes along of which the story captivates you and the pull to be bigger and live bigger literally takes your breath away. This book is called ‘Skin in the Game’ and it’s remarkable not only because you’ll read it one sitting, but it’s remarkable because of the strength, depth and drive of the woman behind it.

In this episode I had the extraordinary experience of connecting with this woman. You’ll know her legacy, the products she founded, and now you’ll hear her story.

Praised as ‘The Woman Who Started a Cult’ Jane’s disruption to an industry, that at the time didn’t even exist is a story worth hearing.

Jane share’s the dots along her life’s path that when connected together start to form a magical image.

Rather than share too much about what we unpacked let me share that in this one conversation I feel in love with Jane - and this comes as a warning that you might too.

Life is hard for all of us. Rocketing rates of physical and mental health issues are a testimony to the immense pressures of our complex modern world - and then you throw in a global pandemic, economic uncertainty, and restrictions on movement. So how do we become strong and adaptable to face life’s challenges?

Three Australian SAS veterans reveal their groundbreaking resilience techniques to master your mindset and overcome adversity. They’ve culminated their findings into a book ‘The Resilience Shield’.

Dr Dan Pronk, Ben Pronk DSC and Tim Curtis are Australian Special Air Service Regiment (SAS) veterans with MBAs. They have over 60 years combined experience in leading high-performance teams.

We talk about what is resilience and unpack the six elements that help to strengthen your resilience shield. In particular we dive into Mind and the role of creativity and spirituality, and wrestle with the concept of Adaptability - which for me truthfully I like the idea of, but the reality of having to constantly adapt to environment can just down right suck at times - maybe you agree?
Dan, Ben and Tim currently work to support clients in improving their capabilities at the intersection of leadership, teamwork, resilience and crisis management.

Dr Dan Pronk is involved with the top-rating SAS AUSTRALIA on Channel 7 and will have an extensive on-camera role in the 2021 series.

This was a great conversation with super practical tools on how to understand and strengthen your resilience in the face of whatever life brings you.

Enjoy this conversation with Dan Pronk, Ben Pronk and Tim Curtis.

Today’s episode is one from the archives - but archives you won’t have heard before. I recorded this conversation with David in Sept of 2020 where he was reflecting on what it was like 12 months after he achieved something extraordinary - swam the English Channel.

David Frizzell is a team, leadership, communication and change consultant. He is the host of The Team Guru Podcast - which I’ve had the delight of being twice now. So it was nice to turn the table and interview Dave for a change.

The work he has done developing leaders and advising on change across large programs - from state government to multinationals - together with the ideas he steals from his podcast guests, has turned David into an opinionated bore.

In September 2019 David swam the English Channel and shared with us why this became a goal for him, the preparation and what he learnt from this experience.

You’ll be inspired to explore possibilities once you’ve listened to this conversation with David Frizzell.

There is little doubt that the world is in desperate need of care; however, despite the overwhelming global problems that face us, we can find ourselves caring too much, while at the same time caring too little.

Excited to share with you this episode with someone who’s on a mission to have all of us embark on the radical art of taking time; time to care.

There is power in telling and sharing stories. Far too many stories in this country, in Australia, aren’t given the voice or the platform to be shared. My guest on this episode is both a story-teller and a community-creator.

Marlee Silva is a proud Gamilaroi and Dunghutti woman living in Sydney. She is the co-founder of Tiddas 4 Tiddas, a social media initiative, which is dedicated to celebrating Indigenous women and girls through storytelling.

Marlee also writes, produces and hosts her own podcast titled 'Always was, always will be our stories', where she interviews inspiring Indigenous role models who are working to change the world, one day at a time. Marlee has also an author, with her first book just realised; ‘My Tidda, My Sister’. This book is both stunningly written and beautifully designed, weaving optimism and heart into tough and important conversations.

We talk about growing up as the only identified Aboriginal person in her school, the role of story-telling and community connecting, and how the residual trauma of the stolen generation lasts much longer than we might think.

Can you teach kindness? My guest for this episode not only believes that you can, she has built a curriculum around it and is taking this work to our education system with the aim of teaching and instilling kindness across our communities.

Today I connect with a returning guest, the incredible Kath Koschel. Kath’s story is remarkable - so big in fact that we’ve already dedicated episode 83 to unpacking it. If you haven’t had the chance to tune into that episode yet, make sure you do either before you listen to this one, or afterwards. It will make this episode even more remarkable.

Kath is on a mission to share and spread the message of the power of kindness through her charity The Kindness Factory. When everything around us feels hard and uncertain, kindness reconnects us to our humanity.

Sharing this message with school students far and wide Kath realised the need to show people the small and large ways that we can learn kindness.

We unpack this amazing work, as well as what does kindness mean when it comes to standing up for the hard things. Kindness isn’t soft and fluffy, it can be the courage to say no or to call our important changes such as racism, sexism, and bullying.

In episode 87 of this podcast series I spoke with the proud Wiradjuri & Wailwan woman Teela Reid who referred to 2020 being the year of reckoning for Australia and it’s connection to our First Nation people.

And a reckoning we are facing.

WIth the Black Lives Matter movement here in Australia picking up voice I was of course eager to sit down with Teela again, to continue to unpack, to sit in the discomfort, and learn. For her and for so many here in Australia, for generations this isn’t a new movement, this is an intergenerational battle, a daily fight.

In this conversation we face the reality that health statistics for indigenous people in this country are worse than for the white community, and we dismiss this truth. We talk about what is tokenistic vs real action in acknowledging Aboriginal culture.

Teela is generous in the face of my ignorance, and focused on the changes she has committed to seeing happen here in this country.

I want to say a huge thank you for the ongoing generosity and fight Teela brings. She calls us all to write to our local members, show up where we are, and use the platforms that we have.

Ask yourself where is your reckoning as you tune into this conversation with Teela Reid.

Amongst the massive shifts in our world there is a conversation that I have been wanting to have. A conversation diving into what it means to experience, recognise and respond to grief and loss. Something many of us are experiencing.

All too often we associate grief and loss with finality. The end of something. And yet what so many are experiencing now and have been experiencing over the last few months is both the reality and the anticipation of grief and loss.

So in order to walk through this conversation with me, I invited psychologist Dr Mel Taitmu. Mel is the lead clinician and educator at MAIA, a private psychology practice based in Burleigh Heads on the Gold Coast. The MAIA method supports clients and communities to recalibrate their bodies, reintegrate their minds and reignite their hearts. So I had to talk to her.

Mel completed her PhD in indigenous psychology from a Maori perspective and shares cultural insights into how her Maori ancestry faces grief and loss.

Mel shows up in her life as a researcher, therapist, teacher, mother, wife, celebrant, gurfer (girl surfer) amongst many other things.

There are many threads throughout this conversation that will be relevant for you no matter what change you might be facing. Mel reminds us to come back to ourselves, recognising the permission that whatever we’re feeling is okay, and the importance of asking for what we need.

This is a heartfelt dive into grief and loss with the beautiful and insightful Dr Mel Taitimu.

The pursuit of balance is an endless pursuit - it’s one that goes round in circles, has us trying to do it all, with the zen calmness of a monk, when the reality is that trying to find balance leaves us feeling exhausted.

Is it really achievable or is balance all kinds of B.S?

That’s the question that today’s returning guest dived into for her new book, launched today, Balance and other B.S: How to hold it together when we’re having/doing it all. Felicity Harley previously shared much of her story on Episode 8 of this podcast series.

She has been a journalist for Australia's leading women's publications for two decades, including a nine-year stint as founding editor of Women's Health. She launched and is currently editor-at-large of whimn.com.au and has appeared weekly on Sunrise.

In today’s chat she dives into the research for her book, including interviewing some of Australia’s most well-known women, and leading experts in their field. Of which I’m humbled to have been one.

Felicity lives in Sydney with her husband, Tom, and their greatest achievements, three children. In her spare time, the health aficionado drinks coffee, does yoga, exercises (to stay sane) and cheers on the Sydney Swans.

It’s possible, that this time in lockdown during a global pandemic, is the perfect time to put balance under the microscope - and see if we really want to pick it back up again when all this is finished.

Raised in the small country town of Carcoar, Kurt Fearnley has always been determined.

Being born without the lower portion of his spine he grew up in a community who never saw him different. In our conversation Kurt shares how it wasn’t until he was 12 years old that he fully realised that his pathway would be different.

Kurt has achieved extraordinary feats from crewing a winning Sydney to Hobart yacht, crawling the Kokoda Track and winning dozens of marathons around the world, many of them representing Australia.

His career has been in wheelchair racing, and Kurt shares the moment he realised that his chair represents choice and it could take him anywhere in the world. He started his career with two Silver medals at the 2000 Sydney Paralympic games, before making his winning breakthrough at the 2004 Athens Paralympics with 2 Gold medals.

Kurt conquered the world, winning seven world championships and more than 30 marathons around the globe, including 10 marathons in 2007 and three straight New York marathon titles.

In April 2018 Kurt finished his Australian representative as he started it, on home soil, with a win in the marathon at the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games. We talk about this race and what it took for him to combat doubts and reach out for help to mentally prepare for what would be his last race representing Australia.

Since hanging up the green and gold, Kurt has been busy. You will hear his passion for advocating for people with disabilities and his drive to put this on the nation agenda in our country. He has also been recognised in multiple sphere’s, including being awarded 2019 NSW Australian of the Year (and if you haven’t watched his acceptance speech for this google it now - it’s powerful).

This conversation was recording, sitting on a couch at a hotel a week before the announcement of 2019 Australian of the Year. Kurt is humble when I asked him about the potential of being awarded this honour and shifts quickly to what he sees as his responsibility to influence politicians, corporations, and education systems to give people with disabilities more choice then they are current afforded.

Enjoy listening to the thoughtfulness, insights, and humour and this extraordinary Australian, Kurt Fearnley.

When we hear about scientific breakthroughs we often don’t get the chance to hear what happens behind the scenes and the sheer volume of work that is required to achieve a breakthrough.

This episode’s guest Dr Dharmica Mistry is co-founder and Chief Scientist at BCAL Diagnostics, a small Australian biotechnology company developing a revolutionary blood test for the detection of breast cancer.

Dharmica was awarded a PhD from Macquarie University for her work on the detection and characterization of novel biomarkers in blood and hair that could be used as the basis for a blood test for breast cancer.

In 2016 Dharmica was the recipient of the “NSW Young Woman of the Year” award. She was also announced as Young Executive of the Year (2016) in Australia by the Australian Financial Review (AFR) Boss Magazine.

In this conversation we unpack the role of female scientists and the personal determination required to work in the world of uncertainty and innovation. Listening to Dharmica talk about her work made me want to don the lab coat - she is passionate about her craft.

Today’s conversation is one with a difference. When I asked today’s guest for her bio she came back to me and said everything I had identified with before has changed and really I’m just a person who’s done a hike.

And not just any hike. Kirsten Stallard spent 155 days walking the Pacific Crest Trail from Mexico border to the Canadian border covering 4270km of terrain including 42 days across the desert to the final days walking through snow and freezing conditions.

Why you might ask? Well I did. Kirsten had realised that her life needed to change and as an extrovert wanted learn how to be alone. She left her job, a 6 year relationship and found the PCT calling her.

This conversation is extraordinary as Kirsten shares the paradox of completing a pilgrimage like this. We talk about the little details like what you eat, to the lessons you learn along the way, including the challenge of asking and receiving help.

If you’ve ever had the yearning to put quiet to the noise, don a backpack, and step away from life then this conversation is an adventure worth hearing.

Join us in stepping into the lessons from the trail with Kirsten Stallard.

Occasionally in life you get the chance to share space with truly remarkable people. Mae Thiew is one of those people who has the ability to fill your heart simply by her smile. The way she spreads love in some of the hardest of circumstances is extraordinary.

Mae works with the forgotten and ignored children of northern Thailand, many of whom have HIV. She is the director and founder of the wonderful home in Thailand Baan Home Hug for the past 30 years. She has borne witness to stories which if I didn’t know better or I hadn’t witnessed first hand, I would question the validity of them.

Mae battles with terminal cancer but her mantra of ‘I am strong’ means that she continues to defy medical rationale of her illness. Powered by love, driven by strength, focused on others in a way that few others do means this is a story that will stay with you long after listening.

I know for me my life is changed because of the time I get to spend with Mae Thiew.

Karni Liddell is a force of nature. She has an enthusiasm for life that is contagious and an advocacy approach that will get you thinking about important topics in the world of disability.

At 12 months of age Karni was diagnosed with muscular dystrophy, her parents were told that she would never be able to walk and that she would not live past her teens.

Defying the odds Karni competed at two Paralympic Games, 1996 and 2000, winning bronze in womens 50 m freestyle in Atlanta games, and bronze in womens 4 x 50m relay at the Sydney Games.

But we actually didn’t dive into her experience as an elite athlete in this conversation. Instead we talked about life as a single parent, the judgement that she combats being a single parent in a wheelchair, and her drive to educate others about the importance of inclusion.

We also dove into the confronting, but important topic of violence towards people with disabilities. The research in this field is limited but the rates are alarming.

Karni’s energy, passion and focus are felt in this conversation and it’s one that all of us need to be joining in more.

Andy is a pastoral, skate-boarding, accountant. I did ask him the obvious question - why accounting? Which you’ll hear the answer to in our conversation.

Andy lives his life with the philosophy that it’s our responsibility to help others. When we do that we end up being gifted with some much ourselves. It’s this philosophy that has guided his work for the past 21 years. Andy is the founder and CEO of Red Frogs Australia, a program supporting young people.

Redfrogs mission is to provide a positive peer presence in alcohol-fuelled environments where young people gather, educate young people on safe partying behaviours, and with their random acts of pancakes give them something else to do.

Their branding came about my accident when he found that having a bowl of red-frogs became the gate-way to connecting with youth at risk. RedFrogs is now the largest support network in Australia for Schoolies, Festivals and Universities students, and they have gone international with their work.

We chatted about Andy’s drive in the work that he does, how we manages his energy after 21 years at the cold face and why the value of sitting and connecting can be life-changing.

When you hear some of the things that today’s guest has already achieved at a young age it’ll blow your mind.

But to me she’s also an example of someone who’s truly connected to her purpose and see’s no barriers in what’s possible.

Finalist for Young Australia of the year at 20, list as one of Australia’s top 100 most influential women at 21, recipient of Pride of Australia Medal, has been on the front cover of the Financial Review, the Yellow Pages and featured in a documentary aired on prime-time national television.

Nicole Gibson is a fierce ambassador for mental health and connection. She’s CEO of The Rogue and Rouge Foundation and has published her first book (because I have no doubt there will be many more for Nic) Love Out Loud. Our conversation is heart-warming and deep as Nic shares her own experiences with mental health and practical tools she still uses to keep love at the forefront of everything she does.

Hetty is a woman of passion and determination and in 1997 she established Bravehearts Foundation - Australia’s leading child protection advocate.

In 2016 Hetty was acknowledged for her work in the community through an Order of Australia Medal, something she is incredibly proud of.

In this conversation Hetty shares how the experience of falling pregnant at the age of 16 and adopting out her first daughter unlocked in her the awareness of what it’s like to lose a child.

She also shares how she’s approaching her 60th birthday and the reflections of what she has achieved and what can sound like the overwhelming mountain of the work that still needs to be done in the area of child protection.

This conversation goes into child sexual assault and there are parts that are confronting. There is always support for a topic as heavy and important as this and I’d encourage you to reach to the Bravehearts website - www.bravehearts.org.au. Their counselling SUPPORT SERVICE is 1800 272 831.

With a career inspired by watching ‘Bewitched’ at the age of 6, Bec Brideson’s interest in the world of advertising started young - they may not sound related but Bec was interested in Samantha’s husband’s career which was in advertising.

Wanting to challenge the status quo as well as do work that is equal parts creative and analytical - working in advertising was a no-brainer for Bec. But it hasn’t always been easy.

As a young female in the industry that has ‘Mad Men’ as it’s history didn’t come without challenges. Challenges that gave her the drive and ambition to prove them wrong.

At 29 Bec became the youngest female Creative Director in Australia’s ad-land, after writing her own marketing plan for her career.

In this episode we unpack the world of advertising, and Bec’s passion, the way businesses and brands need to understand the female buyer.

An industry that I feel guarded about because in the past they have played to women’s insecurities - of not pretty enough, not good enough, not organised enough - Bec believes now is the time for both genders to dial up the curiousity about who we really are.

Finally we also chat about how to navigate ambition and self-care - something that Bec has now learnt the importance of.

In this episode I am mindful that we talk about the #metoo movement and the importance of women’s agenda’s being spoken about in the public platform. If this brings up frustrations or angst as you tune in make sure you reach out to the communities around you that are taking these issues forward - in Australia NOW Australia is at the forefront of this work, and I encourage you to find out more about their work.

Today's guest has experienced some extraordinary levels of success throughout her life. As a teenager Giaan Rooney was faced with the choice of diving (pun intended) into a swimming career or pursuing a career in netball. She choose swimming and went on to compete on the world stage, winning an Olympic Gold Medal and breaking a world record amongst other achievements.

In this conversation we talk about Giaan’s transition from elite sports into her next career as a TV presenter and media personality.

Whilst she has many accolades Giaan shares the raw and honest experience of feeling like she was failing at parenthood after the birth of her son Zander, and the way she is navigating this role as a Mum with both her kids.

She also talks about how she believes that insecurities are the root of all evil. This was such a call to me that all of us have things that we are insecure about, and holding onto these leads no-where good.

I’m not sure what you were doing when you were 8 years old, but I’d guess that it doesn’t quite come close to what today’s guest did at this age. Alyssa Azar followed in her father’s trekking footsteps and completed the Kokoda Track at the age of 8 - kick-starting a love of trekking, climbing, and smashing big goals.

In 2016 Alyssa became the youngest Australian to summit Mt Everest at the age of 19, and then earlier this year, 2018 summited Everest again from the north side.

Alyssa describes the experience of walking that final 700metres at Everest, and why even when faced with a gaol in sight that you can never take success for granted - and therefore how important it is to be fully present to the moment you are in.

Alyssa’s is a great story of courage, endurance, never giving up even when facing remarkable challenges. She will talk about the mindset to achieve great things and why when you achieve someone it’s important to be setting the next goal.

This is a determined young woman who knows how to set an audacious goal and has the determination to do whatever it takes to achieve it. Enjoy this insightful conversation with Alyssa Azar.

Maz Compton was the first ever guest that I had for Stand Out Life series - we chatted in Episode 1 nearly two years ago and that episode is still one of the most tuned into episodes of the entire series. So when she published a book I knew that I absolutely had to get her back into studio.

Her book is called The Social Rebellion and it’s candid, personal and real with Maz sharing her experience of giving up alcohol, over 3 1/2 years ago. But her message is more than just putting down the beer or the bubbles - it’s a story about reconnecting with who she is and healing the wounds of the past.

Describing herself as a social rebel, this hasn’t been an easy journey - because when you think about it when you give up the thing that numbs you from facing the hard things, you’ve got nothing left but the face the hard things.

To get real with emotions, to do the work on yourself, to face the truth. Maybe this is a relationship that you might be ready to shift too.

Whether its back in the Editor of Cosmos days, as a host on the first series of MasterChef, the face behind the international I Quit Sugar movement, whose 8-week program has been completed by 1.5 million people, through the pages of any one of her international best-selling cookbooks, or in the poetic words of her book about anxiety titled, ‘First, We Make The Beast Beautiful’, which was a New York Times best-seller - it’s likely somewhere across her career you’ve come across Sarah Wilson.

She’s a focused self-confessed perfectionist who oozes curiosity. And it’s this deep curiousity about life, people, and living in the shit that Sarah and I connected over.

Sarah walks her talk encouraging others to live with less through messages about minimalism and anti-consumerism, in fact her latest book just realised ’Simplicious Flow’ is a call to zero waste cooking.  We explore a bunch of topics including her experience with anxiety.  Sarah shares that writing First we make the beast beautiful was the process in her accepting her anxiety and was a form of therapy.

This is also one of the first times Sarah shares the decision behind closing her I Quit Sugar business which she did in February this year, 2018, with the proceeds to go into her philanthropic trust. In a world of hustle and growth Sarah’s reason to go down this path is fascinating.

Liza-Jayne (LJ) has almost three decades of experience helping organisations, causes, and individuals successfully grow their profiles and accentuate their positive. She has worked at the highest levels of media, government and business as a journalist and trusted adviser. It was her closer friendship with fellow Journalist Tracy Spicer that also set her on the path with NOW Australia and Outspoken Women.

After Tracy shared a tweet in October of 2017 and received an overwhelming response in light of the #metoo movement it was a realisation that it was time to add to this conversation. NOW has been founded by a diverse group of women with extensive experience across research, education and advocacy. Their work is focused on making workplaces safe for everyone.

LJ shares her personal drive to make the most of her life and how to look at and navigate the inevitability of mistakes. Tara Moss is someone that I’ve admired for years, so to be able to share a conversation in a studio with her was an absolute delight. Tara wears many hats, she’s an author with 11 best-selling books and two more in the pipeline, a documentary maker, presenter, journalist, former model, and an advocate for women and children’s rights.

She lives and breathes her philosophy to never live the same day twice. Curious at heart, Tara shares how she was always attracted to research and words, even from a young age - where her fellow students at school made their way into her Stephen-King-like stories.

Tara is passionate about expression and her latest book Speaking Out is a call to action for all of us to share our stories - in fact it’s not just a nice thing to do, it’s something we all collectively need to hear.

We also chatted about self care, and when Tara mentioned that the core of self care is to just find something that makes you smile it made me want to spend a year doing random, fun things to uncover what might make me smile the most.

With over 20 years in the entertainment industry it's hard to remember a time when Osher Gunsberg wasn't on TV (or on the radio). Osher is one of Australia’s most loved celebrities.

I’m not going to lie, today’s episode is a heavy conversation; a much needed conversation about grief and loss, 10/10 of us will die - it’s inevitable, we’ll experience the passing of someone that we love and have to navigate our response to grief and loss inside the communities that we live.

Jess’s experience with grief, and the way she beautifully, rawly and openly shares her story is as complex as grief itself. It’s heart-wrenching, joy-filled, tear-jerking with the critical punctuation of swear words required to share such an experience.

After losing her first born son, Monty, in 2006, Jess Williams experienced post traumatic growth thanks to her community. Her passion with the GroundSwell Project, and the Compassion Community where she is pulled to talk about death and grief in workplaces, keeps her up at night; and she invites everyone to be a part of the collective change around death and dying in Australia

Whilst there are some components of this conversation that are tough to hear it is a truly remarkable conversation that ended with some long hugs between Jess and I. And that’s the power of creating connections and safe spaces to talk about grief and death. I would encourage you to lean into these conversations, to build your community around you, and to know that there are people sharing in these stories too.

Grab your tissues, be kind to yourself, and carve out the space to soak up this life-affirming conversation with Jess Williams.

Today’s conversation is with the ever positive Ellie Cole. Ellie has become one of Australia’s most accomplished Paralympians with 15 olympic medals and a world record.

At age three, Ellie’s right leg was amputated after she suffered a life-threatening sarcoma cancer.

When Ellie started swimming as a form of rehab post-surgery, doctors expected it to take at least a year to learn how to swim.

It took her two weeks.

Ellie shares stories about the power of gaining perspective, the essential role of gratitude, and the importance of normalising what we might see as a disability - but is really just her story.

It’s not only Ellie’s courageous story but her unrivalled sense of humour, wonderful humility and never-say-die attitude that make her a true Australian inspiration.

So, when I heard Em had published her first book ‘Winging It’ I knew it was time for another chat.

Emma is the founder and global CEO of Business Chicks, Australia’s largest community for women.

Its one thing to challenge your mates to have a month off the drink it’s a whole other thing to start a national initiative and charity fund-raising event.

But 10 years ago that’s what today’s guest embarked on. Brett MacDonald was one of three British back-packers travelling through Sydney who all decided to have a month off alcohol after a few solid months of partying. Through building a website, linking it to fund-raising for cancer organisations and with the backing of a national radio presenter Adam Spencer, in 2008 Dry July was born.

Here we are in July 2018 and same of you listening across Australia and NZ may have signed up to Dry July . It’s something I’ve embarked on this year and I’m excited about the social experiment and the importance of raising much needed funds for cancer care (my Dad is currently going through cancer treatment so if you'd love to support me in this month away from the booze Prostate Cancer Foundation would love your support - jump on here).

This is a fascinating conversation with Brett about his drive for change, the way that Dry July has needed to evolve and stay relevant, and his international ambition to utilise a new platform for fund-raising.

P.S If you think it’s too late to be involved in Dry July, then you’re wrong. It’s never too late to start. So make sure you jump onto the website, commit to raising some funds, even $50 is great, get ready for a month of no hangovers.

When it comes to putting yourself in the way of hard things, and having gone through hard experiences, this episode's guest has a few stories to tell.

You may know her as one of the final three people left on the 2016 series of Survivor in Somoa. Aside from her gruelling 54 days on the island, and the toughest 6 1/2 hour challenge she’d ever faced, El Rowland has a fascinating story. She has spent 13 years in her career in the army and only just last year made the courageous decision to leave and step into the unknown future of her own businesses.

In our chat El shares how hard this transition was but how much it was driven by a powerful purpose. A personal purpose, but one that is experienced by too many people and often in isolation.

El has experienced the depths of mental illness and shares the darkness of depression and anxiety that we often don’t hear about*, which you can hear still brings up emotions for her. She also unpacks how she has found her way back to hope.

This is a beautiful and real conversation with El Rowland.

Listening to these two is like chatting to your best friend. Their story of friendship was love at first cyber-stalk (or close to that); and how they have taken their individual skills and leaped into a new career together is a unique story.

During this episode Lise Carlaw and Sarah Wills, better known as Those Two Girls, give us a glimpse into the uniqueness behind their drive and success (Sarah's regular 'welling-up' in our chat gives you an idea of how cool it is...or how much she doesn't mind a little cry).

They’ve become popular for their distinctive style and walk the line between smart and irreverent, with warm communication styles and disarming onstage banter. Lise and Sarah's natural female friendship chemistry is engaging and, with a #1 national morning radio segment on Hit FM, clearly audiences want to hear more from them.

Outside of radio, Those Two Girls are official ambassadors for Suncorp's national #TeamGirls initiative, which aims to build a national of confident girls in partnership with Netball Australia and Reach Out. They are also creative ambassadors for Brisbane City Council, joining the likes of Keith Urban and Katie Noonan.

Lise and Sarah are known for producing sell-out events (which have been attended by thousands in their hometown), and regularly front crowds as MCs and guest speakers thanks to their broad appeal in Brisbane and regional areas.

In recent months, they have worked for clients ranging from retail centres to rugby league (State of Origin), child safety organisations (Queensland Government) to charities; car dealerships to chemists; fashion to finance and more.

We talked a lot in this episode about finding 'that' friend in adulthood, dealing with imposter syndrome, the business of monetising a friendship, and why at the end of the day you've just gotta back yourself.

You'll wanna grab a cuppa and settle for this episode, it's a cracker.

Our identity is central to who we are as human beings - and it is so often tightly connected to our upbringing and our family.

Today’s guest Joel has a lot to celebrate. He is a renowned film maker and world class storyteller, making beautifully crafted stories that tough the heart and move the soul. He is a sought after keynote speaker and combines film, music and photographer into his unique delivery.

Joel was born in the Philippines but was separated from his family and found in a busy marketplace when he was five years of age. It was like every parent and every childs nightmare.

Nearly 31 years on, having been adopted and raised by an Australian family, Joel embarked on what seemed like an impossible mission to track down his birth mother in the Phillipines. With virtually nothing to go on except knowing the date and location he was found, Joel undertook a journey that would change his life forever.

This is a powerful conversation with Joel that reminds how important it is to reconnect with our identity.

"It’s what people do not the position they hold that really makes a difference..."

When I started this podcast series I always knew I would have the conversation with Peter Baines.

Peter has held many positions and seen sides of humanity many of us are not exposed to. As a forensic copper Peter Baines worked at the cold-face of communities. Throughout his career his work landed him in places like Bali after the Bali Bombings and Thailand after the tsunami.

In this conversation Peter provides a personal insight into the drivers behind our decisions and why when you are rock bottom sometimes the only thing you have left is to help others.

For last 10 years that's what he has dedicated his life to. Over 10 years ago he launched Hands Across the Water, charity supporting children at risk in Thailand. The charity now has seven homes across Thailand. The success lies in creating shared experiences through bike rides, treks and social venture programs. Peter asks us to look at and redefine our measures of success.

She also hosted and produced her own TV show in the UK called “What’s On In London”. She was the host and producer of video content for Australia’s biggest women’s website Mamamia.

There are bucket-loads of laughter in this episode as Shelly unpacks her stories from a varied career from crime reporter to the 'fake-it-til-you-make-it' moment on live TV, to launching her video production company ShellShocked Media with her husband.

There are infinite moments of 'aha' and permission to be real in this conversation, and the following are a few of the key take-aways:

  • it's okay to be upset if life doesn't got your way

  • always make time for your close friends

  • turn up camera-ready before you're ready (step into the life you want before it arrives)

  • none of us should feel bad for our choices

  • look after you in the busyness

  • always have a laugh or 50!
